Black Sea vacation Romania & Bulgaria in 7 days

Do you want to plan your holiday in Romania and Bulgaria, but you are not sure how to do it? Here are some frequently asked questions that can help you:

What is the best way to travel in Romania and Bulgaria?

There are many options for a tour in Romania and Bulgaria, but not all of them are efficient. It is important to know some aspects when you choose how to explore both countries.

Traveling to Romania and Bulgaria by train is not an option because the connection between these two countries is very poor. Plus, the train is not very fast in the Balkans, so you may spend too much time on the road.

By bus, it is a better option, but you need to plan each segment carefully because the bus schedule may not be the best. Another inconvenience is that you won’t find all the information you need available online, in English. If you prefer to travel by bus, make sure your itinerary is not very tight.

Direct flights between Romania and Bulgaria are not very often. If you prefer to travel by plane you will face some funny situations. Even though it takes around 5 hours to travel from Bucharest to Sofia by car, a flight may take you first from Bucharest to Wien or Italy and then to Sofia.

Exploring Romania and Bulgaria by car is the best option. This way you won’t lose time on the road and you can reach attractions that are not possible to visit by bus or by train. The most comfortable option is to book a tour with a local tour operator, as we.

This way, the tour operator will design the itinerary according to your wishes and the time you want to spend here will make all the arrangements and will make sure that you will enjoy your trip.

You can choose a tour with a guide or a self-driving tour.

Private guided tours in Romania and Bulgaria

Our private tours in Romania and Bulgaria are tours with guides in which you will be permanently accompanied by a guide-driver. He will help you with check-in and check-out at the hotel will tell you stories about the places you visit, will accompany you inside the tourist attractions to give you more details about them, and will make sure that you have the best possible experience.

Private tours are the best option for those who need flexibility and someone to take care of the whole trip. Basically, in a private tour, your only concern is to enjoy the trip. The itinerary can be customized from 0 and can be easily adapted. If you want more free time on certain days or you want to visit certain attractions that are harder to reach, the itinerary will be adapted to your needs.

Self-driving tours in Romania and Bulgaria

Driving tours in Romania and Bulgaria are self-guided tours. You won’t have a guide to accompany you, but you will have our full assistance during the tour plus all the other services we provide for a private guided tour. (itinerary creation, hotels, and car rental booking, etc)

Yes, you can rent your car and plan your trip to Romania and Bulgaria alone, enjoying a successful vacation. What we offer through these driving tours is that you can enjoy the flexibility of a trip on your own, without the hassle of planning and researching in advance. Plus full assistance during the trip if you have questions or face situations that you may need help to solve. (a local who doesn’t speak English, a website attraction only in the local language, tips & tricks)

Our self-guided tours in Romania and Bulgaria include car rental, accommodation, a detailed itinerary, and assistance before and during the trip. This means that we do all the planning and include in the route the attractions you want and those that we agree upon, tips and tricks to visit them, important notes and information (that you can find only on local websites), restaurant recommendations, and self-guided walking tours that you won’t find anywhere else.

Also, once you start the route you can contact us for assistance. Another advantage is that they are cheaper than private guided tours.

All our tours can be booked as both driving tours and private guided tours.

The border between Romania and Bulgaria

The border between Bulgaria and Romania is an international border, 631.3 kilometers long, of which 139.1 km is a land border, 470.0 km is a river border, and 22.2 km is a maritime border. It follows the line of the Danube for a large part of its course.

The Romanian-Bulgarian border is between the localities of Pristol (Mehedinți county) and Vama Veche (Constanța county). In this sector, there are 14 points for border crossing control, all in the international traffic regime (7 ports, 6 roads, and 2 railways).

The same traveling conditions apply for Romania and Bulgaria, so you can cross the border between these two countries if you meet the requirements for one of them.

When to visit Romania and Bulgaria?

Tours of Romania and Bulgaria

Summer is the most popular season to visit Romania and Bulgaria. The temperatures are high (around 30 degrees Celsius) and the weather is nice. It is also a good time for a beach holiday in the Black Sea.

Winter is quite cold and very often with snow in some areas. If you want to enjoy the local food and traditions, December is a great month to come and celebrate Christmas either in Bulgaria or Romania. Christmas and New Year are public holidays, so many attractions will be closed, but there are other things to do.

For those who love skiing, both Bulgaria and Romania have ski resorts prepared for those who want to enjoy the snow in the mountains.

Spring can be rainy and quite capricious or it can be sunny and warm. Spring is a good choice for those who want to avoid the crowds and the high temperatures.

Autumn is usually sunny and in my opinion, it is the best time to visit Romania and Bulgaria. Beautiful colors and warm weather are a great combination for a trip to remember forever!

How many days do you need in Romania and Bulgaria?

There are more than 1000 kilometers from the North of Romania to the South of Bulgaria and many things to see on the road. So, you need at least 7 days in Romania and Bulgaria to visit the main attractions, meaning Bucharest, Sofia and some cities between them.

To fully enjoy your vacation you can stay from 10 days till 1 month and you won’t get bored. 10 days are enough to explore Bucharest, a part of Transylvania, Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv. In two weeks, you can add Maramures or Bucovina and the seaside.

If you have fewer than 7 days, choosing just one country and visiting its capital and the main attractions near it is better.

When you plan your trip, there are many details to consider. That is why an itinerary designed by a local travel expert is a great option. You won’t risk choosing an unrealistic route, planning attractions that are closed on some days or missing some landmarks that you didn’t know about.

Tour Itinerary

Arrive in  Sofia , meet your guide, and unpack your suitcase at the Hotel Niky, located at the city’s epicenter. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring the refreshed, revitalized culture of Sofia.

In the afternoon, take a  guided walk  along Sofia’s yellow-cobblestone streets; visit the massive, domed Aleksandar Nevski Cathedral, the imposing Royal Palace, the Presidency the 4th-century Saint George’s Rotunda.

*Please note that if you experience a delayed arrival in Sofia for any reason, the city tour can be broken into two parts: the afternoon of your arrival day and the following morning.

Overnight in  Sofia,  Hotel Niky***  (centrally located)

Take a day trip from Sofia to Rila monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded by the 10th-century patron saint of the Bulgarians, it is considered one of Bulgaria’s holiest sites. This architectural masterpiece played an essential role in Bulgarian cultural preservation throughout the Middle Ages and well into the 19th century, when exquisite restoration work produced frescoes and icons by prominent masters.

Return to Sofia in the afternoon, rest of the day at leisure.

Leave Sofia in the morning, headed for Plovdiv.

On the way, stop in the picturesque village of Koprivshtitsa, famous for the well preserved houses, built in the “National Revival” style, popular in the middle of the 19th century.

Join your guide for a stroll in the village, and if interested, visit some of the houses which nowadays function as small museums.

In the afternoon, continue to Plovdiv. Enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town upon arrival, famous for its Bulgarian Renaissance architecture and ancient Roman City.

Overnight in Plovdiv,  Hotel Evmolpia***  (located in the Old Town)

Leave Plovdiv in the morning, with the medieval capital of Veliko Tarnovo as your final destination.

On the way, visit the Kazanlak Thracian tomb, one of Bulgaria’s UNESCO sites (please note you will visit the replica, as the original is closed for preservation). Then cross the mountains over the picturesque Shipka Pass, a vital location in the liberation struggle of the Bulgarians in the 19th century.

Your last stop will be at Etara, where you will visit the lovely Ethnographical complex, a collection of old houses, mills and workshops.

Arrival in Veliko Tarnovo in the late afternoon.

Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo, Hotel Gurko*** (located in the Old Town)

In the morning, you’ll have the chance to investigate  Veliko Tarnovo  more thoroughly. Take a stroll in the Old Town, where you’ll discover enticing handcraft shops along with traditional icon painting, woodcarving, weaving, coppersmithing, and silversmithing.

Next, visit the monument of Tsarevets, a medieval fortification and church set high on a majestic hill. It was the seat of kings (and the Bulgarian patriarch) from 1185 to 1393. View the fortress walls and watchtowers, the Patriarch’s church, and Baldwin’s Tower.

Later, take a short drive to  Arbanassi , a beautiful little village filled with architectural gems of the 17th and 18th centuries. Profiting from Ottoman favor, the town became the residence of rich and powerful merchants. You can glimpse their prosperous and secure lifestyle at the 17th-century Konstantsalieva House, itself a small fortification with stone construction below and timber above. Next, move on to the Nativity Church, built according to restrictions implemented during the Ottoman occupation.

In the afternoon, you’ll begin your journey north, toward the Romanian border and Bucharest. Panoramic  city tour  upon arrival.

Overnight in Bucharest,  Hotel Capitol****  (5 minutes walk from the Old Town)

You’ll visit the medieval Transylvanian city of  Sibiu  today; you will cross the Carpathians along the spectacular  Transfagarasan Road . Your first stop will be at  Curtea de Arges , a soaring, otherworldly cathedral built under intense societal pressure. Its leaning, twisting cupolas trick the eye and seem to defy the laws of gravity. Built in the early 1500s, the church contains many legends involving attempts at winged flight and tragic human sacrifice.

Next, travel north for photos of the Gothic ruins of  Poienari Castle , home base and impenetrable medieval fortress of Vlad the Impaler. Built upon the backs of arrested noblemen, the castle claimed many lives during Vlad’s restoration of the structure and later, during clashes with the Turks. Vlad’s wife, Jusztina, eventually leaped from the precipitous heights, choosing certain death over capture and imprisonment.

This afternoon, you’ll arrive in  Sibiu  and check into your hotel. Enjoy a guided  walking tour  of the medieval old town, the most intensely fortified city of the Saxon era. In an era of frequent attacks, Sibiu was guarded by a complex system of multi-layered walls, gates, and secret passageways.

*Please note the Transfagarasan road is open only between June and September. If your tour takes place outside this period, you will travel on the road going along the Olt river valley.

Overnight in Sibiu,  Hotel Art****  (located in the Old Town)

Today, a day trip to medieval  Sighisoara  is in store; get ready to travel back in time.

First, pause for a tour of the  Biertan fortified church  (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Discover how the Saxons employed church strongholds across Transylvania in the 13th and 15th centuries to protect themselves against invasions. Security was intentionally created in “peasant fortified churches,” built and maintained exclusively by local townspeople. In case of attack, villagers could rush inside and bar the doors. The 16th-century Biertan church represents the final edifice to be constructed in this style.

Your Transylvanian journey continues in Sighisoara, a medieval citadel inhabited without interruption since the time of its construction. Enjoy a  guided walk  through the  Old Town  (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and ascend the 800-year-old clock tower to tour the fascinating History Museum contained within. The citadel’s great height affords an impressive view of the surrounding area. You can also climb the 17th-century wooden-covered staircase to the Church on the Hill, beautifully preserved since medieval times.

Sighisoara is widely known as Vlad the Impaler’s birthplace, who provided a rich source of inspiration for Dracula. Born here in 1431, Vlad arose to become Prince of Wallachia in the 1450s and was widely feared by his enemies due to his ruthless tactics in battle. The actual house of his birth still stands; it is now one of Sighisoara’s many restaurants.

In the afternoon, drive to  Alba Iulia , the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese in Transylvania. Transylvania’s union with the rest of the country was proclaimed here on December 1, 1918 (Romania’s National Holiday). The town’s most impressive feature is its fortress, beautifully restored in recent years.

Overnight in Alba Iulia,  Vila Preciosa***  (located next to the citadel)

Today, you’ll travel to  Maramures , a truly rare and special place where the medieval landscape and traditions have survived; the area is almost untouched by outside influences. On the way, stop in the small town of Turda to visit the salt mines.  Salina Turda , one of the oldest mines in the area, presents you with the otherworldly experience of acoustical subterranean caves dominated by colossal pieces of illuminated machinery.

Next, make a stop in  Cluj Napoca , one of Transylvania’s most important metropolitan centers. Cluj Napoca is an important university town, and you’ll notice a fresh, energetic ambiance in the streets. Join your guide for a stroll in Cluj, the vibrant central district.

After your stroll, you’ll drive north to experience the fabulous wooden houses and intricately-carved gates of Maramures, an area encircled by wild nature and unspoiled forests still heavily populated with bears, wolves, and lynx—carnivores usually associated with past times and fairy tales. Top off the day with a tour of the  Surdesti wooden church  (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the tallest built before the advent of modern times.

Overnight in the village of Breb,  Pensiunea Lucia*** . Home cooked dinner included.

If you’ve ever wanted to immerse yourself in a living medieval landscape, a full day in Maramures may be the closest you’ll ever get. Start in the idyllic village of  Breb , where you’ll witness firsthand the traditions of times past. Visit a traditional plum brandy maker and shop with the local market’s townspeople, selecting foods and specialties available only here.

A visit to the  Merry Cemetery in Sapanta provides a spirited aside. Here, brilliant, multicolored markers hand-painted in the naïve style cluster together in a highly individualized remembrance of each person buried here.

The  church at Peri  is your next stop; you’ll visit the world’s tallest wooden church, a newer structure built in the old manner. Compare it to medieval wooden churches you’ve seen on this trip, and notice how precisely the work follows time-honored construction techniques.

Next, visit the  Memorial to the Victims of Communism  in Sighetu Marmatiei. Learn how the Communists succeeded, for a time, in causing citizens to live restricted lives, in constant fear and doubt—even concerning their own thoughts.

Today, travel to  Bucovina , a rural area famous for exquisite treasures: the UNESCO World Heritage Painted Monasteries.

Stop along the way to explore the delightful  monastery at Barsana ; then cross the eastern Carpathians, making your way into Bucovina and the village of Ciocanesti. The townspeople here take beautiful care of their remarkable houses, embellished with visually striking designs and motifs.

Arriving in Bucovina, you’ll tour the bright Painted Monasteries of  Moldovita , surrounded by exquisite rose gardens, and  Sucevita , with its imposing system of walls, towers, and fortifications.

Overnight in Gura Humorului,  Hotel Buchenland****

In the morning, you’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage monastery at  Humor , with its beautiful garden and medieval watchtower, and  Voronet , with exterior walls adorned in a panoramic rainbow of colors. Voronet, once a monastic calligraphy school, is world-renowned for its remarkable frescoes, painted primarily in extraordinary shades of azure. It is perhaps the most celebrated church in all of Romania.

Next, discover a hidden gem: the  Nicolae Popa Ethnographic Museum , a landmark stop for the peasant culture in Bucovina. The prominent sculptor documented important folkloric traditions in his own home and has left behind an astounding collection of visual art.

This afternoon, travel back into Transylvania via the  Bicaz Gorges . The view is stupendous, and you may choose to make brief stops along the route at local souvenir shops.

Arrive in Brasov in the late afternoon.

Overnight in Brasov,  Hotel Schuster***  (located in the Old Town)

Once you’ve awakened for the day and finished breakfast, your guide will lead you on a walk through the  old quarter of Brasov . You’ll explore the Black Church (southeastern Europe’s most significant Gothic cathedral) and the Old Town square, surrounded by the sumptuous homes of elite merchants of the past.

Next, visit one of the most famous sites in Romania:  Bran Castle , which holds a strong link in popular consciousness with the legend of Dracula.

A journey filled with magnificent mountain scenery and astounding views will bring you to Sinaia—the Pearl of the Carpathians. Visit  Peles Castle , the astonishing 19th-century home of Romania’s first king. The interior, created of marble, crystal, and rare, exotic woods, features the highest level of luxury obtainable at the time; it was assembled with no obvious limits, financial or otherwise.

Nearby, the beautiful  Sinaia Monastery  beckons.

Arrive in Bucharest in the late afternoon.

Departure. Transfer to the airport.

Discover the country's true culture with the help of experienced local guides.

  • Small group sizes to help escape the beaten path.
  • Authentic local experiences with lots of inclusions.

Before setting foot in these two countries found in Eastern Europe, it would be easy to confuse them as quite similar. Both are lands with a sprawling history, impressive nature, and sophisticated cities.

Either country will impress with its fascinating culture that has remained since medieval times into the communist eras of the 20th century. However, by taking our Romania and Bulgaria tours, one discovers that these two neighbours are each unique in their experiences.

Our Romania and Bulgaria tours start with an arrival to Bucharest, where we are greeted by castles and churches. From the new Renaissance architecture found at Peles and Pelisor Castles to the Dracula folklore inspired by Bran Castle, there is more than meets the eye in terms of towers and furniture collections.

Much of Romania feels still medieval in its beauty. Old world charms become apparent in the narrow winding streets, houses with thick walls and huge portals painted in vivid colours, towers, and churches found around every corner. Where clock towers still adorn town halls and fortified walls surround the town centres.

It is a place where across the Transylvanian plateau towns have a marked history of bloodshed, a predictable outcome for a country resting within the crossroads of Europe. Influences from Germans, Turks, Saxons, and Tartans, are but a few of the invaders and occupiers who called this land home.

In times of war and times of peace, religion has always been prevalent in this area, and Romania and Bulgaria tours make several stops to highlight its importance. We'll pause at the painted monasteries at Bucovina, delighting in their artistic brilliance and UNESCO significance.

Along the way between the old medieval towns and ancient monasteries, our Romania and Bulgaria tours will discover the Carpathian mountains that make a wide curve, having left a network of craggy peaks, dense forests and green meadows that nature enthusiasts will revel in.

From there, our journey continues south, to one of the most exuberant nations in the Balkans. Bulgaria is laced with history, ancient mythology and has been blessed with mist-shrouded mountains that extend from a glimmering coastline. Once a medieval hub, Bulgaria has re-emerged as one of Europe's most exciting destinations and for good reason.

Our Romania and Bulgaria tours begin in Bulgaria's capital Sofia, a city with wide boulevards and a motto that it grows but never ages. It's true. In its 7000 years of existence, more than 250 historic, archaeological and architectural monuments have been preserved.

History comes alive in the countryside as well, with evidence of Roman, Ottoman, and Persian influences. Roman amphitheatres sit nearby to Turkish old towns with 19th century Bulgarian homes lining the outer streets in towns such as Plovdiv.

Outside the cities are Valleys of Roses, fortified palaces, and picturesque hillside towns. With such a multi-layered history, Romania and Bulgaria tours navigate the vast relics of the past with intimate looks at the tombs of the heroes, locations of the legacies, and landscape that has been carved over the centuries.

Day 1 Arrive in Bucharest Arrive in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Overnight in Bucharest. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Bucharest - Sinaia: Peles & Bran Castles - Sighisoara We begin our full day of travel and activities with a morning departure by road toward Sinaia. Upon arrival we will visit the nearby Peles Castle. Considered by many one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe, Peles Castle is a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance architecture. This castle was built in the final quarter of the last century for Romania's 'imported ruler' King Carol. Designed mainly in German Renaissance style, this summer residence was decorated throughout by Carol's eccentric wife Carmen Sylvan. Many valuable objects are contained within the castles 160 rooms. We also visit Sinaia, the "Pearl of the Carpathian Mountains". We will take a leisurely STROLL up to the 17th century Sinaia Monastery, an interesting cluster of churches and courtyards which take their name from the ancient Egyptian monastery on Mount Sinai. After a break for lunch in Sinaia we depart for Bran and Bran Castle. Bran Castle is erroneously claimed by some to be that of Count Dracula, the world's most famous vampire. Perched atop a rocky outcrop, this strategically located castle was built in 1377 to protect nearby Brasov from invaders. The castle's rooms and towers surround an inner courtyard. Some rooms are connected through underground passages to the inner court. Bran is home to a rich collection of Romanian and foreign furniture and art items from the 14th-19th centuries. After our visit we continue to Sighisoara, arriving in time for dinner. Overnight in Sighisoara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Sighisoara, Sibiu & Biertan This morning we have a day trip to Sibiu and Biertan. Called Hermannstadt in German, Sibiu was the most important of the 12th century Saxon settlements in Transylvania and its industrious emigres, primarily from the Rhineland, the Moselle Valley, Flanders and Saxony, erected walls around it for protection. The first wall destroyed by invaders not long after its construction, but remains of a 15th century brick wall still stand. Because of the blood shed at its walls, the Turks, after an unsuccessful onslaught, called Sibiu the "Red City." Built into the walls are defense towers that were assigned to particular guilds and medieval houses. Upon arrival we will have a sightseeing tour of Sibiu, one of the oldest towns on the Transylvanian Plateau. We will wander its old quarter, where houses with immense roofs have been built within the fortifications, giving Sibiu its powerful medieval aspect. The Tartans destroyed the town's first Citadel in the 13th century and the massive Evangelical Church now occupies the site. It took 200 years to build the church in the 14th and 15th centuries. We continue to Biertan, a former Saxon village south of Sighisoara. Here we find a fortified church from 15th century, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage, representative of the unique Transylvanian phenomenon of building rural fortified churches. Surrounded by three lines of defense walls of 12m high and towers, the church was never breached by invaders. After a break for lunch here, we’ll return to Sighisoara for a walking tour and (perhaps) some free time before dinner. Schassburg in German, or Segesvar in Hungarian, Sighisoara is the only inhabited Middle Ages city in Europe. Mentioned by historians as far back as 1191, Sighisoara has a long tradition in craftsmanship and trade and its fortifications and defense towers still witness for guilds as those of tinsmiths, butchers, hatters, and blacksmiths. Narrow winding streets, houses with thick walls and huge portals painted in vivid colours, towers, and churches, all old and very old (13th-16th centuries) enhance the charm of the place. We will visit to the History Museum located in the former Town Hall. The Clock Tower, dated from the 14th Century, reveals a marvellous view over Sighisoara. Overnight in Sighisoara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Sighisoara - Praid Salt Mine - Bistrita - Gura Humorului Today we visit is one of the biggest salt mines in Europe. Its exploitation has been an important income source for the inhabitants of the area for hundreds of years. We arrive in the heart of the mountains by bus through a long tunnel (1500 m). 120 m below the surface we find an underground city. The air is ionized and it is believed to have therapeutic qualities for those suffereing from respiratory ailments. Treatments are given under the supervision of a medical team that organizes gym programs and breathing exercises. Tourists have everything they need: treatment places, coffee shops, billiards, libraries, entertainment and even a place where people can pray. After a break for lunch in Praid, we continue via Bistrita, founded in the early 13th century by German settlers and (due to its location on the main trading route with Moldavia) to become one of Transylvania's major Medieval cities. Some visitors are attracted by the fact that the town was mentioned in Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. We overnight in Gura Humorului, the perfect base for our explorations of the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. Overnight in Gura Humorului. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Bucovina Monasteries Today is spent visiting some of the most impressive Bucovina monasteries. These triumphs of Byzantine-influenced art reflect a flowering of Moldavian civilization in the 15th and 16th centuries. The "Painted" Monasteries are a major Moldavian destination, because of the vivid and animated frescoes on their church walls. In acknowledgement of their value, the monasteries in Becoming have been declared as UNESCO protected cultural sites. The art historians compare their artistic value with the mural paintings of the San Marco church of Venice. The secrets of the Moldavian painters who prepared the colors and the techniques that made the paintings incredibly resistant are still a mystery. We will visit Voronet, a nun monastery consecrated to St George, within walking distance from Guar Humorous town. Voronet is probably the most accomplished sample of artistic achievement in Moldavian architecture and painting. The monastery was built at a time of peace with the Turks, when Stephen had centralized the state, giving a new impetus to its economy and culture. We will also visit Humor Monastery, founded in 1530. After a visit to the famous Marginea black ceramics centre, we visit the Sucevita Monastery, the largest and arguably the finest of the Bukovina monasteries. The church inside the fortified monastic enclosure (1586) is almost completely covered in frescoes inside and out. Overnight in Gura Humorului. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Gura Humorului - Cheile Bicazului - Lacu Rosu - Brasov This morning we will depart for Brasov via a photo stop at Cheile Bicazulu (Bicaz Canyon). The road that slices through the Bicaz Gorges is among Romania's most spectacular. The gorge twists and turns steeply uphill for 5km, cutting through sheer, 300-meter high limestone rocks. At one point, the narrow mountain road runs beneath the overhanging rocks in a section known as the 'neck of hell'. This stretch of road is protected as part of the Hasmas-Bicaz Gorges National Park. A few kilometers west we will cross into Transylvania's Harghita County and immediately come to the resort area of Lacu Rosu or Red Lake. The alpine resort in this region sprang up in the 1970's and is still a magnet for hikers from both Transylvania and Moldavia. We'll break for lunch before continuing to Brasov. Overnight in Brasov. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Brasov: Town Tour - Bucharest: City Tour This morning we tour Brasov. Kronstadt in German, Brasso in Hungarian, Brasov ranks second in size after Bucharest. The Old Town lies between two mountains, surrounded like a halo by the Carpathians. In Brasov we will visit the Black Church and Museum of First Romanian School of Schei. We depart for Bucharest, arriving in time for a break for lunch. We then begin our sightseeing program in the capital, the nation's powerhouse of cultural and economic life founded 500 years ago.* During the 1930's, its tree-lined boulevards and fin de siecle architecture earned it the nickname "The Little Paris of the East". There is even an Arc de Triomphe on the handsome Soseaua Kiseleff, itself longer than the Champs Elysees and alive with blossoms in the spring. Despite the massive reconstructions of the 1980's, Bucharest remains a 'Garden City', leafy and pleasant, with many sidewalk cafes. Our tour today will include the Cotroceni Palace and Museum, the Triumphal Arch, the Romanian Athenaeum, and University Square. We will drive out to visit the Bucharest Village Museum. Situated in a picturesque environment on a lakeshore, this is one of the largest and oldest outdoors museums in Europe. Its exhibits, including houses, churches, water and windmills are of great historic and artistic value. * Our intention is alway to include the Palace of the Parliament; however, the facility is frequently closed to visitors for official purposes/events, often without notice. If we are able to squeeze it in, please note that it may require that we miss something else due to time constaints. Overnight in Bucharest. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Bucharest, Romania - Fly to Sofia, Bulgaria Today we fly to Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria.* Sofia itself is largely a city of wide boulevards and squares, pleasant parks, and enormous Socialist Realism-style buildings. In the 5th century BC, Sofia was the Thracian city of Serdika. When the Romans conquered Thrace, they made it the capital. Then the hordes of Attila the Hun set it on fire in the 5th century AD and Justinian rebuilt it. * THE TIMING of today's flight will determine if we have free time in Bucharest or Sofia. Overnight in Sofia. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Sofia & Rila Monastery This morning we depart for the 10th century Rila Monastery, 121 km (75 miles) south of Sofia at the end of a winding road through high rock walls with formations like giant animals waiting to pounce. This most-revered of all Bulgarian monasteries lies nestled in a soft, green wood. Mountains rise all around it; below it the Rilska River races over a stony bed. In the 9th century, twenty-year old Ivan Rilski (John of Rila) fled to this peaceful place seeking escape from the sordidness of the world. Finding a cave in the woods above this present monastery site, he took up the hermit life. Here he fed the animals and the birds and prayed in the stillness to God. In time, like-minded men joined him and they built the first monastery here about a 2.4 km (1.5 mile) from the present site, where, today, you will find his tomb, the little Church of St. Luke, and the cave he inhabited. In the past, pilgrims were not deemed sinless enough to enter the monastery. The Rila Monastery is one of Europe's largest monasteries, located in some of Bulgaria's most beautiful terrain. Sightseeing of the monastery features the unsurpassed frescoes of the Church of the Blessed Virgin. Monks still practice within this five-domed treasure. Also contained within the exquisite fortress-like walls of the monastery is the Historical Museum featuring a collection of objects connected with the monastery's thousand-year history. After lunch we will return to Sofia, where we will finish our day with a visit to the National Museum of History, a great introduction to what we will experience and see in the days to come. Overnight in Sofia. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Sofia - Plovdiv Today we travel to the ancient city of Plovdiv, situated in the Plain of Thrace. Plovdiv was formerly known as Pulpudeva until Philip II of Macedon's weary horse collapsed under him here at the edge of the Thracian plain in AD 342. Since that was surely an omen, he built Philippolis on the site in the horse's honour. Later the Romans renamed it Trimontium -- the City on Three Hills. For five centuries, under Turkish rule when it was known as Philibe, it suffered much devastation. Today it is a city of great charm, with legacies of a hectic past. Plovdiv has a lovely "stariyat grad," or old town, with Turkish influences and a charming character. Our tour includes the Old Quarter, the Ethnographical Museum, and the Roman Amphitheatre. Within Trimontium, the historic heart of Plovdiv, typical 19th century Bulgarian homes line the streets. Overnight in Plovdiv. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 11 Plovdiv - Valley of the Roses - Veliko Tarnovo This morning we depart Plovdiv for the world famous Valley of the Roses. In this valley, 70 percent of the world's "attar", or extract from roses, is produced. Nimble- fingered women and girls do most of the picking, while donkeys are used to carry the petals away. In the town of Kazanlak we visit the Thracian Tomb (fourth and third centuries BC). The Thracians are regarded as the original Bulgarians, a people closely linked with the ancient Greeks. Before our climb over the Shipka Pass we will visit the Shipka Memorial Church. The golden Domes of this Russian-style church rise out of the hillside. After crossing the spectacular Shipka with its majestic vistas and momentous history we visit the open-air Ethnographical Museum of Etura, a recreation of a typical 19th century village. After a tour of the museum we continue on to Veliko Tarnovo, once the capital of Bulgaria (1185-1396) and still showing the remains of its past glory -- fortress walls and palaces perched among the steep cliffs of the Yantra Gorge. Clinging to the crags that rise above the River Yantra, this capital of the second Bulgarian Kingdom of the Middle Ages is one of the country's most picturesque sites. It rises on three main hills: fortified Tsarevets; Trapezitsa, where boyars lived; and Sveta Gora, then the centre of a scholarly monastery, now a university site. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Veliko Tarnovo: Town Tour Today we have a tour of this town laced with history. We will admire the breathtaking views of this picturesque region during our tour of the Tsarevets Citadel (Castle of the Czar). This commanding position was first fortified in the 6th century and had become the royal centre of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom by the end of the 12th century. A short drive away is the hilltop village of Arbanassi, first settled by Albanian immigrants in the 15th century. We will have the opportunity to visit several of the houses in the region dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Balance of the day at leisure. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Veliko Turnovo - Sofia Today we travel to Sofia via the beautiful Danube Plain. En-route we will cross over the Troyan Pass and visit the nearby Troyan Monastery, Bulgaria's third largest. After a lunch break we will continue on the well-preserved 'museum-town' of Koprivshtitsa. It was here that the revolt against the Ottoman occupation began in 1876. A visit here gives us an insight as to how Bulgarians lived a century ago. Our WALK throughout the enchanting town will bring us to many unique houses with wooden columns, painted facades, richly decorated interiors, and lovely gardens. Overnight in Sofia. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Sofia: City Sightseeing Today we have a sightseeing WALKING tour of Sofia. The motto of the city is "Sofia Grows but Never Ages"; founded over 7,000 years ago, Sofia today is an exciting meeting place of history and the present. Traces of the lives of Thracians and Romans, Proto-Bulgarians and Slavs can be seen here. More than 250 historic, archaeological and architectural monuments have been preserved in Sofia, the center of the country’s political and cultural life. We'll also see some of the most famous landmarks: The magnificent St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the most spectacular buildings in Sofia. In addition to the splendor of the building itself, the cathedral is also remarkable for its icons and murals, painted by the time's foremost artists. Its crypt contains the most valuable collection of Bulgarian icons. St Sofia's Church is the second oldest, but most significant building, which gave the city its name. Specialists highly value this remarkable archaeological monument, witness of Serdica's golden age during the 6th century. The large archaeological complex of Roman and medieval ruins, dominated by St George Rotunda is the oldest building in Sofia. Repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, the St George Rotunda has been restored to its original 5th century appearance when it was used as a Christian church. The remainder of the afternoon is yours for independent exploration. Overnight in Sofia. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Departure Departure from Sofia. PRIJATNO PATUVANE!! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers arriving / departing on tour dates.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in spring, summer and fall the most popular of which is are spring and fall when temperatures are relatively mild and crowds thinner. Showers quite possible in spring and fall, somewhat less so in summer though can occur any time. Summers can be humid though long daylight hours maximize exploration.

Transport and Travel Conditions Land transport throughout by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on ultimate group size (see 'group size'). Though we will have a couple of full bus days there are plenty of stops of interest. There may not be porters available in all locations. We also make use of public transit in some cities in order to maximize sightseeing where vehicles are impractical (most people quite enjoy this insight into daily life). This trip is typical of most of our European tours, which are ambitious and involve full days of travel and sightseeing. While we don't have any actual strenuous activity (ie hiking) built into the program, you will do a lot of walking on this trip. These walks will mostly be in the form of walking tours of towns and cities and short walks to dinner. Being Europe, and a hilly/mountainous area, cobbles, uneven surfaces, and slopes/stairs are common. If you are accustomed to typical "bus tours," which rely heavily on vehicular transport for all sightseeing activities, you should be aware that this tour is considerably more active.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Activity Level: 2 These are particularly busy tours that feature a lot of moving around, sometimes by train and short journeys on local transport. Walking tours of towns and cities are leisurely but you should be prepared to be on your feet for several hours. Some of our cultural trips that occur at high altitude and/or require greater independence with baggage handling (at hotels, airports, train stations) also fall into this category.

To learn more about the Activity levels, please visit our tour styles page.

Accommodation Well-located, air- conditioned, mid-range hotels (3 star) throughout. Many are smaller properties (3-4 story) that may not have elevators. All hotels have en suite toilet and bath, though most have shower only. Porter service is sometimes available; you MUST be independent with your luggage. If these walls could talk, the stories they would tell…  The Athénée Palace sits in the center of Bucharest and is well known as the former haunt for more spies, diplomats, politicians, journalists, and hangers-on than any hotel in Europe.  The building dates back to 1914, was rebuilt and restyled with an Art Deco motif in the mid-1930s, and claims “as central a place in a country’s history, perhaps, as any hotel in the world,” according to travel writer Dan Halpern.  Before World War II, the Athénée Palace offered travelers from both the Axis and Allied powers a front row seat to the approaching conflict, whereas during the Cold War, the Romanian government tapped phones, bugged rooms, and staffed the hotel with informants in order to quash any nascent uprisings.

Today, the hotel still bears all the culture and heritage of its heyday, with none of the surveillance devices.  Hotel amenities include two restaurants, a bar, café, outdoor terrace, heated indoor swimming pool, fitness center, hot tub, Jacuzzi, wet and dry sauna, steam room, massage lounge, laundry and dry-cleaning services (for a fee), and complimentary Wi-Fi internet access.  Air-conditioned guest rooms have private marble bath with hair dryer, hand-finished oak floors, tea- and coffee-making facilities, TV, and phone.

Discover Sofia + Rila Monastery

This morning’s expertly guided city tour begins with the architectural landmarks of Sofia’s historical core. Chief among these monuments is the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. With its large gilded domes visible from many areas of the city, the cathedral of the Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarch has become one of the city’s most recognized and popular symbols. You’ll also see the round church of St. George, a splendidly preserved Byzantine building, and the impressive Parliament and National Theater. Traveling to the outskirts of the city, you’ll also visit Boyana Church , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built in the 10th century and expanded 300 years later. The interior frescoes date to the 13th century and are considered to be some of the Continent’s most important examples of east European medieval art. After, you will visit Rila Monastery, famed for its impressive frescoes. Originally founded in the 10th century by St. John of Rila, the monastery was destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century and rebuilt in the mid 1800’s in classic Bulgarian Renaissance style. It is now recognized as an important symbol of the country’s strong Slavic cultural identity following centuries of Ottoman rule.  Meals B+L

Onward to Kazanlak + Arbanassi + Veliko Tarnovo

Grand Yantra Hotel - Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

Check out after breakfast and travel to the village of Skobelevo. On your guided tour through the Damascena Complex, you’ll see how Bulgaria’s famed rose oil was distilled in ancient times - and watch the modern techniques in use today. The rose was first introduced to Bulgaria by Ottoman Turks in the 1600’s. Within 100 years, large quantities of rose oil were being exported to France for use by French perfume producers. Today, it’s still an important part of the region’s economy. Nearby in Kazanlak, the Thracian Tomb  is no longer open to visitors - a step taken to protect its Hellenistic frescoes that date from the 4th Century B.C. Enjoy a wonderful lunch in the pretty mountain town of Sinaia and continue to the Azuga Rhein Cellars for a winery tour and a tasting of their traditional sparkling wine.   End your day in the fairytale town of Brasov, founded in the 13th century and home to the historic Black Church, so-named after its massive Gothic walls were blackened by a fire that devastated much of the town. Excursion to Biertan + Sighisoara

Set out after breakfast to the Transylvanian town of Biertan  to visit its fortified church. Dating to the 16th century, it evidences the defensive response of the region’s Saxon communities as the Ottoman Empire began to menace the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Lacking the resources to fortify the entire town, these settlements created fortresses around their churches, enclosing the storehouses to withstand long sieges. From Biertan, continue to Sighisoara where an impressive silhouette of towers and spires will welcome you to one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns. Your privately guided tour includes the architectural landmarks of Old Town  and the Clock Tower Museum with its fascinating exhibits on medieval weapons and torture. Then continue to Viscri , the site of another fortified church. Here in this timeless village, you’ll watch skilled blacksmiths at work - using the traditional generations-old horseshoeing techniques that are still employed throughout much of this pastoral region. Then return to Brasov where your evening is free.  Meals B

Bran Castle + Villages of Transylvania

Continental Forum Hotel - Sibiu, Romania

Start the day with a visit to Bran Castle, originally built in the 13th century as a stronghold of the Knights of the Teutonic Order and later made famous in Bran Stoker’s novel, Dracula. In Zarnesti, you’ll visit the Bear Sanctuary to learn about their work rescuing bears from captivity to live here among the forests and waterways of the sanctuary’s 160-acre tract of land. In the nearby villages of Ohaba and Lisa, you’ll gain further insight into the region’s history and cultural traditions. Then visit the imposing Fagaras Fortress, built in 1310 on the site of an earlier 12th-century wooden fort that was burned by the Tartars in 1241. Continue to the historic town of Sibiu and check in to the  Continental Forum Hotel  for the night.  Meals B

Sibiu + Cozia Monastery + Bucharest

Grand Continental Hotel - Bucharest, Romania

Once a major Saxon trading center, the 12th-century town of Sibiu retains a distinctly German ambience and still reflects the grandeur of its wealthy past. This morning’s walking tour will take you through the historic district inside the city’s medieval walls. Walk through Huet Square, hear the stories behind the unusually-named Liars’ Bridge, and enjoy a guided tour of the Brukenthal Palace Art Museum, set inside a handsome Baroque building overlooking a lovely town square. Then journey to the banks of the Olt River to visit the Cozia Monastery. Built in the late 1300’s, it is considered to be one of the country’s oldest and most architecturally distinctive landmarks. Continue to Bucharest and check in to the deluxe  Grand Continental Hotel  for a 2-night stay.  Meals B+D

Discover Bucharest

This morning’s guided tour of Bucharest’s historic landmarks takes you inside the enormous Palace of Parliament; built during the Ceausescu regime, this is one of the largest buildings in the entire world. From Revolution Square, you’ll be able to take in some of the city’s most impressive sites, including the Romanian Athenaeum – a handsome 19th century concert hall – and the imposing structures which once served as the headquarters for the Communist Party. It was from these rooftops that Nicolae Ceausescu fled by helicopter at the end of 1989.   Your touring also takes you inside the Primaverii Palace, the opulent former residence of Ceausescu. Then head to Herastrau Park to visit the open-air Village Museum; here you’ll find traditional farm houses, churches and windmills that have been gathered from all across Romania to showcase traditional village life in the country’s various regions.  Tonight you’ll dine at Casa Doina, where fine Romanian cuisine is served in a beautiful landmark building in one of the Bucharest’s finest districts.  Meals B+D

  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code BSR.
  • You will walk for at least 2.5 hours daily across uneven terrain, including paved roads and cobblestone streets, with many hills and stairs.

  • In Bulgaria, fresh vegetables are often readily available due to the area’s warm climate, and salads will be an integral part of most meals. Other mainstays are chorba , a bean soup, and tarator , a cold cucumber soup. Pork is the country’s meat of choice, and you’ll find it in countless combinations of soups, stews, and mains. When raising a glass with your fellow travelers, be sure to try some of the local spirits, such as rakia or menta .
  • Serbian food typically incorporates influences from central Europe as well as flavors borrowed from the East. Meals usually center around meats like pork, lamb, and goat. Serbians also love pastry, often in the form of varieties of pie.
  • Romanian food takes much of its influence from the Balkans, Hungary, and Turkey. Throughout the country, sour soups called ciorbă are available in endless varieties and are the perfect way to start any meal. Along the Black Sea coast, fresh fish is prevalent, but the area’s true culinary delight is salata de vinete , a salad made from grilled eggplant, onions, and sunflower oil.
  • All destinations on this tour operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

  • You will use the Bulgarian lev in Bulgaria, the Serbian dinar in Serbia, and the Romanian leu in Romania.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency or USD. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.

  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on your tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.

what our clients say

I really enjoyed my trip with your Original World to Bulgaria and Romania. It was one of the best trips I have ever taken and I have taken alot of trips in the world over many years.

Christian was an excellent guide and fun to be with. His commentary on the start of the '89 revolution as we stood in Revolution Square was very moving. He was there.

Dan & Jeanne O.

Chris, our driver/guide was excellent at both. Easy to understand, well-informed, always helpful and cheerful. He really did enrich the tour!

One of the reasons we chose your tour was because we thought it was very reasonably priced and did not offer the very anonymous 5-star type hotels. We were very pleased. Your tour offered excellent value and insights into a little known country.

It was a good itinerary. We learned a lot of value. The Maramura area was especially fascinating. I was pleased with our guide on all levels.
