• Klong Tour Thonburi: Explore Bangkok’s hidden canals by Longtail Boat

Do you know why Bangkok is often referred to as the Venice of Asia? That’s because part of the city is fully covered in water canals or Klongs, houses built on water and basically all the life happening on the water.

And the best thing – it’s green, peaceful and relaxing. Not the typical adjectives that people normally use to describe the busy and crowded capital of Thailand.

To experience this different face of Bangkok I took a 90-minute longtail boat tour taking me through the narrow canals and allowing me to see the local life on the water. And to be honest, this tour was definitely the biggest highlight on my first ever visit Bangkok.

Discovering canals of Thonburi

The west bank of Chao Phraya River is called Thonburi and it’s the only area of the fast-growing Bangkok that hasn’t been developing with the time. Quite the opposite. It’s still like it used to be, with man-made water canals used as streets, small boats parked by the sides of the local houses that are built right on the water.

Can you imagine that Thonburi was once the capital of Thailand, at the end of the 18th century?

Part of the locals has never wanted to let this piece of history go, so they still live the slow-paced lifestyle.

Not everyone in Thonburi lives wealthy, so circling through the narrow canals allowed me to see fragile huts built right on the water that looked like they’re about to collapse if the wind blows a bit stronger. Some windows didn’t have glass and seemed to have no electricity either.

People here go to work by boat. They buy their fruit and vegetable from the neighbors who use their boats as floating markets.

The kids play on the porch of their homes right above the water. They throw in some bread to attract the fish and then jump in the water to play with them.

In between the houses by the water, there’s so much greenery – large banana trees, palm trees, green bushes. It’s the kind of nature you don’t see that much in Bangkok.

While people live here in different circumstances, they still seem to be happy, as they wave to the tourists from their porches with warm smiles on their faces.

The boat tour

Taking the tour offers a great contrast between the mighty Chao Phraya River and the small 6-meter wide Klongs. Most of the tours usually start at the Phra Arthit boat pier right next to Khao San Road.

The first few minutes the boat rushes between the quite heavy ferry traffic along the river and then it takes a sharp turn into one of the Klongs that connect the new Bangkok with the old one.

Right after the turn, you suddenly find yourself in a totally different environment.

The city noise slowly disappears, the water becomes more peaceful and local homes in size of small wooden boxes on one side of the canal and larger mansions with beautiful yards on the other side reveal themselves.

And most importantly – the air is fresh, the surroundings are quiet and it feels like you’ve entered a serene oasis. The loud noises coming from your boat’s engine are the only things ruining a bit this otherwise blissful environment.

The tour takes you along temples by the canals, a local school, and other establishments just like in every normal town. But in this case, it’s all on the water. Unfortunately, boat drivers usually don’t speak any English, so they won’t be able to give you more information about any of the objects you’ll see along the way.

I also had an old Thai lady approaching us in her small boat, selling cold drinks, snacks and souvenirs, right before we stopped by a temple, where I could throw in the water some snacks for the fish myself, sold to me by a local monk.

Always keep an eye on the boat coasts, as you might notice some monitor lizards sunbathing there.

I was so impressed with the surroundings and how different Thonburi life is from the rest of the Bangkok, that 90-minute tour felt like it’s been only 15 minutes.

How to organize this tour?

Simply show up on the spot at the N13 Phra Arthit Pier . There are two tour desks, one at the entrance on the street and the other one on the actual pier. I used the first one. The prices and the route at both desks are the same.

You can choose a 60-minute or 90-minute tours. One takes a shorter route through the Klongs, while the other one adds 20 minutes more in the Klongs and 20 minutes on the Chao Phraya River to see the skyline of the new Bangkok.

The prices vary based on the season. I visited during the high season and the fixed price was 750 THB per person for a 1 hour trip or 1000 THB per person for 90-minutes. The cashier lady was not up for negotiation at all.

During May – October, the price per person is around 500 THB for a private boat.

PRO TIP : if you would like to visit any of the temples or the houses of the locals, these kinds of tours exist too and can be arranged via travel agents in town or online. The classic tour from the pier that I took follows the regular route without stopping anywhere.

The tours run daily from 7:00 – 18:00, with the best light and atmosphere early in the morning. It’s smart to go during the weekdays, but generally, the canals never feel too busy.

A longtail boat tour is a fun activity for all ages. You just have to be flexible enough to be able to climb from a high pier into a very low boat and back.

How to get to N13 Phra Arthit Pier?

If you’re staying anywhere in the Khao San Road area, the pier is within walking distance.

Otherwise, the best way to get there is to take MRT Metro to Hua Lamphong Station or BTS Skytrain to National Stadium and grab a metered taxi to go the final distance. The Taxi should cost no more than 100 THB.

Bangkok Canal Boat Price

Bangkok canal boat price depends on the distance and varies from 12 to 22 THB. The same ticket can be used when transferring between lines so buy the ticket to the final destination as it will be cheaper than getting 2 separate tickets. Current Khlong Saen Saep Boat fare table can be seen below.

Tickets should be purchased directly from conductors on board. Once you board the boat, just find a place to sit or stand (when crowded) and wait for the conductor to come and collect the money from you.

The conductor will give you a small paper tickets. Keep the ticket in case they ask you to pay again.

Make sure to get a ticket to your final destination when you start your journey even if you need to transfer between Golden Mount Line and NIDA Line at Pratunam Pier. The conductor may ask you to show the ticket on the next boat and you won’t need to pay again.

Bangkok Canal Tour: How To Do It & What To Expect

No visit to Bangkok would be complete without experiencing its authentic canals (khlongs). One of the best ways to do it is by taking a private long-tail boat Bangkok canal tour .

In this post, I am sharing our experience so that you know what to expect from your Bangkok canal tour.

At the end of the article, I also include some practical information to help you plan your time in Bangkok and explore the canals.

TIP: If you don’t have the time to read the entire article and are simply looking for a longtail canal tour in Bangkok, there is now this highly-rated tour that you can pre-book in advance.

There are other nice options too, often including more than just a boat tour on the canals. Whatever you choose, take my word for it, it’s a lot easier than trying to arrange it at one of the countless chaotic piers on the spot.

Bangkok canals – some history

Bangkok’s first canals were dug in the late 18th century when Rattanakosin (now Bangkok) became the capital of Thailand. King Rama I decided he wanted to live on an island. Rattanakosin Island, home of the Grand Palace (both built in the same period, around 1782), was created by digging a wide canal linking the Chao Phraya River.

Later, more canals followed. As the city grew, canals became more and more important not just for defense purposes, but also for irrigation, drainage, trade, and of course transportation. In the 19th century, Bangkok developed a big canal network with hundreds of kilometers of waterways. It is during this period that Bangkok became known as the Venice of the East .

In the 20th century, the city expanded further but shifted its focus to building new roads rather than canals. Some canals were filled again and turned into roads. But even though the canals are of less importance nowadays, they are such an indispensable part of Bangkok, so definitely worth a visit. Find out!

Bangkok canal tour – where to go

As mentioned, Bangkok has hundreds of kilometers of canals. So your experience will probably differ depending on which canal you explore.

Khlong Saen Saeb , for example, is a busy canal in Bangkok’s center. This canal is served by a public motorboat and if you have the time you could explore it by hopping on and off the boat. You’ll find everything here from street markets to design shopping, and from street food to modern cafes.

Since our time in Bangkok was limited, we didn’t visit this part of the city. Therefore, I cannot compare this canal to the ones that we did. From everything I read, it sounds and looks like a very different world than the canals that we visited (and recommend). Read on!

We took a long-tail boat on the river from a pier near the Grand Palace and explored the canals of Thonburi area .

This area, west of Chao Phraya River, is probably best known for the famous Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn . Thon Buri is the oldest area of Bangkok and exploring it is a bit like taking a journey back to Bangkok’s past.

The long-tail boat canal tour will differ a bit depending on what you agree upon and where exactly you start. We did the southern part of the neighborhood. Alternatively, we could have done the part a bit more north, but our local guide made it sound like it didn’t really matter that much – it’s still just as interesting.

Bangkok canal tour in Thonburi area – what to expect

We started our canal tour by – literally – jumping on a long-tail boat at Tha Tien pier. We then sailed Khlong Bangkok Yai ,  Khlong Mon , and ended at Wat Arun (Khun Mae Pueak Cross River Ferry Pier) – see the image below for the exact location.

This Bangkok riverboat tour took us 55 minutes. But your Bangkok canal tour can be easily expanded by covering a bigger distance.

You could opt to visit places like the Royal Thai Barge Museum , an Orchid Farm , or – on the weekends – Taling Chan floating market . Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see this market, but we were told that it’s one of the more authentic markets of Bangkok where vendors cook and serve fresh seafood directly on the boats.

The moment you leave the Chao Phraya River, you enter a different world. It’s even separated by a lock, since the water level of the canals is lower than in the river.

Taking a canal tour through this old part of Bangkok showed us a very different part of the city. So close and yet a world apart from the hustle and the bustle of the busy streets in the city center or the modern skyscrapers you see in the distance… This part of town had such a peaceful atmosphere. Sometimes it felt as if the time stood still here.

As we sailed Thonburi’s canals lined with trees, we couldn’t believe the huge contrast around us. Tiny teak houses built on stilts above the water and shabby constructions stand side by side with impressive private properties and beautiful ornate temples…

In most countries in the world, there is a clear separation between the areas where the rich or the poor live. Our local guide said that it’s not really the case in Thailand. We have never seen this more clearly than here, next to one of Bangkok’s oldest canals.

We could get a glimpse of how locals live here.

Elderly people sitting on the chairs on the wooden docks of their tiny homes overlooking the canal, women hanging laundry to dry, men fishing, children jumping into the water and swimming between the giant fish…

We saw local vendors in their wooden boats loaded with all kinds of merchandise from fruit and vegetables to souvenirs and household appliances…

We were also surprised to see so much fauna in and around the canals. From a variety of birds and fish to huge water lizards quietly lying by the water…

Take a look at one of the lizards we saw in the picture below. No way I’d dare go for a swim in those waters…

One of the highlights of our Bangkok canal tour was a short stop at a temple where our guide bought some freshly baked bread from the Buddhist monks. Our kids could then feed the bread to the fish. In no time our boat was surrounded by hundreds of fish and the kids had the time of their life!

How to do Bangkok canal tour

There are probably many ways to do a Bangkok canal tour or a river boat tour : with a local guide or on your own, with an organized tour , or by hiring a private boat.

You could potentially just go to one of the piers (e.g. Tha Chang Pier, Tha Maharaj Pier, or Tha Tien Pier, or Thonburi Railway Station Pier and inquire there), get the boat, and set on tour. However, this only sounds easy on paper.

Once you get there, you realize that it’s more complicated than that. First, the piers in central Bangkok are crowded. Second, it’s not at all clear where to go or who to ask for a private tour (everyone stands in line waiting for a public ferry to cross the river). And third, very few people speak English, so it might be tough to explain what it is that you’re looking for.

It’s not like on the islands in the South of Thailand where you just go to the beach and talk to any of the long-tail boat drivers. The river in Bangkok is so busy and there are no boats or drivers waiting by the pier. So you have to ask the right person who knows how to ‘catch’ one for you…

We did this Bangkok canal tour with a local guide , as a part of a private guided day trip in Bangkok . When one of the piers couldn’t get long-tail boats to dock due to the water level, our guide took us to the next pier and arranged the long-tailed boat there. We just followed him through all the chaos, feeling thankful that we didn’t have to try to sort this out ourselves.

Exploring Bangkok with a local guide who speaks English really well makes your trip so much more comfortable! Furthermore, you get interesting insights and information about the places that you visit.

We crafted our own itinerary for a day in Bangkok with the help of a local guide. We also asked for a private minivan since our trip started and ended at the airport. This was a great way to explore Bangkok with the locals and saved us so much time!

We could have never seen so much in so little time on our own. The price you pay is for the guide for the day. Then, depending on what you want to see and do, you pay entrance fees as you go.

So, in case of this Bangkok private canal boat tour, our guide arranged a private long-tail boat for us and we paid 1,500 TBH (+-40EUR) for it. From what I understood, the price was the same for up to 8 people.

Bangkok canal tour – conclusion

If you are looking for something unique to do in Bangkok , then I really recommend a long-tail boat canal tour. It’s a wonderful way to get a bit off the beaten path, escape the crowds, and see a more authentic part of the city.

We visited Bangkok with children and they were really happy to have a break from the temples and do something different for a change. All in all, a great tour that I highly recommend to all first-time visitors to Bangkok.

Hi Brittany, it's in there, but I guess you missed it. As said in the article, we did a canal tour as part of this day tour with a local guide. Basically, we asked them to make a personalized itinerary with things we wanted to see and do and this was one of them. Thanks for this article! Now you provoced me to arrange a canal tour by myself ;) I know there are smaller boats to get as well, because around 8 years ago I went to Koh Kret with one. My plan is to find a restaurant close to the pier, where they are not o busy and speak english, and then ask them to find me a boat and talk with the captain where I want to go and where I want him to stay. Easy!? Maybe not at all! Haha

If you are at or near Suvarnabhumi Airport with an afternoon free, go to Hua Takhe Market. There are rustic canals and charming cafes. Only 10 minutes by taxi.

Hello, I have enjoyed reading about your canal tour just a quick question, we are going in June with my 82year old mother, who has difficulty going up and down stairs let along getting in a boat, do you think this will be impossible? I would really like Tom do old Bangkok Thonburi canal.

Hi Paula, I think that it will be too difficult for your mom. It's really not easy to get in and out of those boats. We had to almost jump to get into ours because it couldn't easily dock because of the waves... So maybe find an alternative way to explore Bangkok. I see that there are dinner cruises on bigger boats, like this one. Maybe that's something you could do instead... Enjoy your trip!

A klong tour, sailing through old Bangkok!

A klong tour through the canals of Bangkok is the ultimate way to discover Thonburi, the old part of Bangkok. Thonburi is located west of the Chao Phraya River . This is a part of Bangkok where you, as a tourist normally don’t come quickly. You feel like you are far away from the blocks with skyscrapers, large luxury shopping malls and four-lane roads. Yet Thonburi is closer than you think and easy to reach. During the boat trip you will see wooden houses on stilts, friendly locals, unexpected green oasis and colorful temples .

You sail mainly through the narrow canals (klongs) of Bangkok. Because of this you sometimes literally look closely at the houses at the waterfront. You will see the hustle and bustle along and on the water; people who garden, cook, do the laundry or take a nice nap. In short, just life along the river as it has been for generations. For the Thai very normal, for us very special!

Our boat trip through the old Bangkok

In the early morning we traveled with the Sky Train to the BTS station Wutthakat. Here we met our English speaking guide.

We booked our klong tour in advance with the Bangkok Boat Company , this turned out to be a good choice!

When we got out of the BTS station we noticed that there were no high tower blocks here, but small houses and a few low apartment buildings.

Together with our eloquent guide we walked through the narrow streets to the boarding point of the boat. On the way we met an old lady who made slippers and a group school children brushing their teeth in the street. The atmosphere in this part of Bangkok is not to compare with the modern and new part of Bangkok.

Arriving at a narrow canal our cute little longtail boat with captain was ready for departure. Because we had booked a private tour we got a smaller version of the longtail boat. Cute, but also a bit exciting, because this one sits quite low on the water!

Sailing through the klongs (canals) of Bangkok

As soon as the boat starts to sail, your eyes won’t rest! The houses on stilts in the water are very nice to see, some are on the verge of collapsing. Other houses look very nice and have beautiful gardens with fruit trees and beautiful flowers. Although you are still in the mega metropolis of Bangkok, there are still parts with nothing but green.

There are quite a few monitor lizards living in this water by the way, we saw a pretty impressive specimen swimming nearby!

During our klong tour our guide gave us a lot of information about the area. She told us that in a decade or so, maybe all the traditional houses on the water will have disappeared. The land in Bangkok is precious and large investors are very interested in the land along the canals of Bangkok. The inhabitants cannot always prove that the land is officially in their possession because it has been passed on from generation to generation. Also, sometimes there is not enough money to repair / renovate the old houses and selling it is the only alternative.

During the boat trip through Thonburi you also make some stops, which are often depending on which tour you book. There are also klong tours where you only stay in the boat. If you book a private tour , you can discuss which stops are planned. For example, you can visit an orchid farm or take cooking lessons in a traditional Thai house. Even an introduction to meditation is possible.

We had agreed that we especially wanted to discover the narrow canals of Bangkok in peace and quiet. We also visited The Artist House, a cultural center and the Buddhist temple Wat Pak Nam.

The Artist House 

The Artist House is an inspiring place on the river of Bangkok. The whole building is made of wood and richly decorated with plants. There is a few hundred year old pagoda where a Thai puppet show is given on Saturday. Admission is free.

There are shops with art objects such as statues, paintings, books and postcards. It is a nice place where there is a lot to discover about Thai culture. You can decorate Thai wooden masks or make your own bracelet (also fun for children!). For some extra luck you can give the fish some of the colorful fish food that is for sale, no nibbles for you but for the fish…

The surroundings of The Artist House are also very worthwhile. The narrow streets are connected by steep bridges, here we will definitely come back!

After exploring the surroundings of The Artist House we got back in the boat. We went to the Wat Paknam temple, we already caught a glimpse of it from the boat earlier. Man, that looked impressive!

Wat Paknam is a temple that is very popular with the Buddhist Thai population, but still relatively unknown to tourists. It was very quiet and that gave the temple an extra special serene atmosphere. The Wat Paknam is known for its stupa with beautiful handmade gold decorations. At the very top is a fairytale almost fluorescent ceiling.

We also saw how a new Buddha statue was built. On the picture you see the mouth of the Buddha. Eventually it will be almost 70 meters high, making it the third largest sitting Buddha statue of Thailand!

We booked our klong tour in advance with the Bangkok Boat Company because we had heard good stories about it. You can choose from different kinds of tours . Like the Lazy Afternoon Tour, Family Tours and Breeze and Pleased Tours. With a private / custom tour you can decide in consultation with the guide what you will see. Whatever you choose to book a klong tour with these nice people is highly recommended!

Nice (family) outing in Bangkok!

After the beautiful temple we made a last boat trip back to our pick-up point. By now it was around noon and time to say goodbye to our guide. We had been on and around the water for almost 3 hours and the time had passed! A tour through the canals of Bangkok is really fun to do, also for the children. (life jackets are available). For people with walking difficulties it can be difficult to get in and out of the longtail boat. Of course the guide or the captain will help where possible.

Where to book a longtail boat in Bangkok?

It isn’t necessarily necessary to book a longtail boat tour in advance. You can also rent a longtail boat at the Phra Arthit Pier (near Khao San Road and Rambuttri Road ). We did this a few years ago. If you ask us which one we liked better, the answer is easy, the pre-booked tour at the Bangkok Boat Company ! With the tour of Bangkok Boat we went longer and deeper into the canals. This is also because you get on a different location.

During the tour we booked at the pier, we spent a lot of time reaching the narrow tributaries and houses on stilts. After that we went back at a fast pace. Of course this is a pity because there is so much to see! So if you want to see the houses on stilts, at least take the 1.5 hour tour.

Prices longtail boat hire

The price of a longtail boat tour depends on your wishes. At the small tour agencies on the pier the prices seem to be pretty fixed. However, if you can negotiate well, you can sometimes manage to get something off the price. You can also try to negotiate directly with a longtail boat owner. Always make clear in advance what the price is, how long the trip will take and where you are going to take the boat. At the pier you pay around 750 to 1,000 baht for an hour and a half sailing through the klongs of Bangkok. In comparison with the Bangkok Boat Company , you pay 950 baht for 2 hours sailing. The choice is yours!

Glimpse a slower pace of life

Laidback locals laze on the porches of old teak houses sliding by as our boat chugs through another of Thonburi’s khlongs (canals); children throw food to the fish before jumping in to swim with them; elderly vendors, their faces weathered from years in the sun, cruise past on small wooden boats filled with vegetables and noodles to be sold to canal-side homes. Just across the river from Bangkok, the khlongs of Thonburi offer a glimpse into a slower pace of life.

Unlike on the east side of the river in Bangkok proper, where most of the khlongs were filled in to form roads during the 20th century, Thonburi’s canals continue to serve as important thoroughfares. Many homes have postal addresses on canals rather than roads, and the engine powered banana-boat mailman speeds through his route every weekday morning.

That’s a regular longtail boat, not the mailman.

Though many large, noisy, diesel-fume-exerting longtail boats are now found clamouring through the larger canals, there’s still plenty of room for the old wooden row-boats of yesteryear .

“Cruising… on a sunny afternoon…”

Boat rides through the khlongs have become a popular tourist activity , and most end up hiring large — and noise and air polluting — longtails, paying around 1,000 baht for an hour of speeding through the canals without stopping or receiving any explanations of what’s being seen. Seeking an alternative, we discovered Pandan Tour , which offers full-day khlong tours on a smaller and far quieter teak wood boat powered by a significantly cleaner natural gas engine. The tour costs around 2,000 baht per person for adults (kids are half price) including lunch and an excellent English-speaking guide — solid value when compared to the other options.

In the old days, neighbourhood temples would have acted not only as places for monks and lay folk to meditate and pay homage to the Buddha, but also as schools and community centres. Countless temples , large and small, still loom over Thonburi’s canals.

Feeding the fish is a major pastime around here.

One of our first stops was to see the relatively large Wat Sai , which features a centuries-old teak wood home believed to have been lived in by the early 18th century tyrant king, Luang Sorasak, aka the “Tiger King”.

Although hearing about the Tiger King’s pastime of beating his subjects to death in bare knuckle muay Thai fights was an interesting, if not disturbing titbit of history, I especially appreciated the second temple stop — Wat Pa Chearn Lane . Set in a more rural area further to the west, this forest meditation tradition temple is rimmed by canals, streams and lotus ponds. Its simple, open-air buildings that allow for a connection with the natural world are a pleasant break from the elaborate and wats of Bangkok.

Other stops throughout the day included Khlong Lat Mayom floating market (although it’s only in action on weekends), a pretty orchid farm and Khlong Bang Luang artist house .

Although we found each of the above to be enjoyable stops well away from the package tours, our favourite part of exploring Thonburi’s canals was simply soaking up the scenery . Pandan’s boat moved slowly enough to decipher what types of fruits were growing in the trees along the khlongs, to glimpse the colourful spirit houses perched in front of each home, and to catch the proud expression of a local boatman gliding past.

Although we wouldn’t hesitate to suggest Pandan Tour as a great way to not only see the canals but also slow down to the pace of life around them, other tours and private boats can be hired on the spot at Sathorn pier , Tha Chang pier or Tha Tien pier along the Chao Phraya Express Boat line. Otherwise, most Bangkok tour companies can prearrange a khlong tour.

Things To Do In Bangkok: Longtail Boat Canal Klong Tour

See why Bangkok used to be called “the Venice of the East” by exploring its canals and the communities that still live on them, right in the heart of the modern metropolis

It’s a cliche to talk about the pace of change in cities – how everything gets put up and ripped down so rapidly, especially in cities all across Asia. But Bangkok takes that speed of change one step further – there are few other cities outside China where a metropolis has metamorphosed so radically from its origins than in Bangkok. Visitors to Bangkok in the early part of the 20th century saw canals crisscrossing the city and providing the chief means of moving around it, all feeding off the Chao Praya river where tradeboats came in. These canals gradually succumbed to being filled in and turned into roads, generating the gridlock for which Bangkok has become notorious.

But still in the heart of Bangkok lies a huge network of canals where hundreds of people go about their daily lives, just the other side of the Chao Praya from the huge skyscrapers of the financial district but seemingly a world away. Bangkok’s canals are a magical place to visit and are a remarkable contrast to the frenetic pace of the rest of the city.

You can get your very own tour of the klongs (canals) by hiring a longtail boat to take you there. There are several gentlemen touting for business at Saphan Taksin, the riverboat and BTS Skytrain stop – a longtail boat will comfortably hold at least six people and I’ve been variously charged 1500 and 1800 baht per boat for an hour and half trip around the klongs. There are all sorts of routes you can take, with lots of extra attractions to go and see and places to disembark for lunch or explore. You could make a whole day of it if you wanted. Both times I’ve done it, we’ve elected to simply stay in the boat and explore the klongs themselves.

Riding a longtail boat is a bit of an adventure in itself – the distinct narrow, beautifully crafted wooden hull is powered by the famous longtail engine – basically a car engine with a propeller shaft attached. The longtails were made famous by the chase sequences in the James Bond flick The Man With The Golden Gun, and they can shift when the boatman opens up the throttle.

To enter the klongs, you pass through a lock which was build to prevent the houses along the canals flooding when the main river rises during the river season. Once through there – and sometimes it can take 15 minutes of waiting or so – you enter into the network of canals proper. It’s worth having your camera ready from the start, because lining the canals are all manner of houses from the most dilapidated to the impressively grand, all cheek by jowl with one another. The canals are quite narrow – only about 20 feet across – so there’s a lot to take in. Along the way, there are numerous temples, shrines, restaurants and schools and you’ll see the locals going about their day.

There’s one enterprising lady who is a one-woman floating market, waiting in her little boat for visitors to come along to buy some trinkets. She’s very friendly and speaks excellent English. There’s also mobile food vendors, who have their charcoal grill rigged up in the boat itself and are busy cooking up delicious chicken kebabs whilst paddling around the klongs with admirable dexterity. You’ll inevitably see kids messing around on the water’s edge and taking a swim – they give a cheery wave when you go by and usually try and compete over who can push the other one in the water first too.

In short, there’s a whole way of life to see on the klongs, just by sitting on a boat and taking it all in. It makes a welcome change from the traffic snarlups on the other side of the river and also lets you get a glimpse of life as it used to be lived through much of Bangkok. The west bank of the river has remained largely undeveloped and this will no doubt soon change – but hopefully the klongs will remain and perhaps even have a renaissance as a way for 21st century Bangkokians to get around their city.

Begin the day with a river cruise down the Chao Phraya River to explore the famous ‘khlongs’ (canals) (approximately 1 hour). Life along these canals seems a world away from the chaotic streets of the capital. Pay a visit to Wat Pho, one of the Bangkok temples, with a 46-metre-long gold-plated Buddha reclining inside. Even the feet of this statue are incredible, three metres long and intricately decorated with mother of pearl. The temple grounds are equally fascinating, filled with beautifully decorated stupas, halls, and shrines. No trip to Thailand is complete without an overnight train journey and this evening you’ll head south to Surat Thani, accommodated in air-conditioned sleeping berths (approximately 12 hours). Multi share compartments have bunk beds, with sheets and pillow provided, your baggage travels in the carriage with you and there is a food and drink service available on board.

Arrive into Surat Thani in the morning and then travel by minivan to Khao Sok (approximately 2.5 hours). Set amid hectares of thick jungle, waterfalls, limestone cliffs and topped off with an island-studded lake, the national park of Khao Sok is a nature lover's paradise. Here you’ll have free time to explore one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Walk along the dirt trails that snake through the quiet park, looking out for wildlife as you head for rivers and waterfalls. The flora is also top-notch, with the rare Rafflesia Kerri, one of the world’s largest flowers, only found in Thailand here. Spend a night in a rustic hut amid ancient gnarled rainforest trees.

Travel through pristine jungle, rubber and oil plantations before boarding a long tail boat for a ride across stunning Cheow Lan Lake, with one of its islands as your destination. With limestone karst hills rising almost 1000 metres into the air and surrounded by beautiful green waters, the area is incredibly picturesque. Trek to an island cave and discover its eerie stalactites and bats hanging from the ceiling, with subterranean streams at your feet. You’ll enjoy lunch in a local raft-house before having free time to relax, swim or kayak around the lake to search for wildlife – the water is clear and teems with aquatic life, and you might spot hornbills, langurs, macaques or gibbons above water. Head to Ao Nang in a private minivan (approximately 3 hours). On the way, stop at Baan Bor Tor and embarking on a sea kayaking journey. About halfway along the coast between Than Bok Khoranee and Krabi town is a bay of mangroves that might just be the most beautiful bay in Thailand. Surrounded by towering karst formations and many small offshore islands, let the waterways become your pathway as you move slowly through the bays and canyons, discover inlets, caves and hidden lagoons, and check out the local wildlife up-close – the birds overhead and monkeys in the trees. If you do see a monkey, make sure you secure your belongings and any food! Arrive at Ao Nang late afternoon, and enjoy a free evening.

Your included sea kayaking trip in Krabi is in double kayaks. The water is usually calm through the beautiful mangrove forests, but you will need to be a confident swimmer to take part.

Famous for the incredible limestone karst scenery of the headland, sun-seekers will fall in love with Krabi's unspoilt beaches, the spectacular cliffs will tempt avid rock climbers, while scuba fans can embark on a Krabi diving adventure. See the original 19th century shophouses, the street markets, and the strong cultural and religious identity still on display in each neighbourhood – Little India, Chinatown or the Muslim Quarter. Check out the street art that adorns the walls and stop by a clan jetty. Clans were formed by 19th century immigrants, banding together based on the area of China that they came from, and they built rival waterfront societies on wooden jetties. You’ll also pay a visit to Thai and Burmese temples, and see Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia. You’ll have this afternoon free and, aside from sauntering along the interesting streets (or hoping in a trishaw for a ride that will take you back in time), you might want to see the clan house of Khoo Kongsi. Check out the ornate carvings on the walls, roof and pillars, and maybe see more Chinese architecture in the memorably blue Courtyard House of Cheong Fatt Tze, a fabulously wealthy merchant. Continue south on the local train to Kuala Lumpur (approximately 4 hours). This is a great opportunity to try and chat with the locals and maybe get some tips out of them for your next destination. Kuala Lumpur, the cosmopolitan capital of Malaysia, is affectionately known as KL and you'll almost always hear locals refer to it by its acronym. Communities of Indian, Chinese and ethnic Malay people mingle peacefully, allowing travellers to get the best of all three worlds. KL has grown from a sleepy little village to a skyscraper-lined multi-million-peopled metropolis. The city can seem vast, but the main focus is the traditional core of the old town (the former colonial centre), the luxury hotel and shopping mall district of the Golden Triangle, and bustling Chinatown and Little India. Follow your leader on an orientation walk near the hotel and in the evening follow the Bukit Bintang Walkway and see the Petronas Twin Towers lit at night. You’ll be incredibly spoilt with the breadth and quality of dining options on offer. From simple-street side fare that attracts queues of customers eager to try the latest dish said to be the best around, to seriously high-calibre, world-class cuisine.

Enjoy a free day today for your own exploration! Perhaps visit the National Monument (commemorating those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom and based on the Iwo Jima Memorial in the USA), the vast National Mosque, featuring a bold and modern design, or the Istana Negara (National Palace). You might like stroll Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), or shop in Suria KLCC (one of Malaysia’s premier shopping destinations) and then head up to the Skybridge & Observation Deck of the iconic Petronas Towers to gain another view on this cosmopolitan city. Lake Gardens is home to a number of sights, including the National Planetarium and the superb Islamic Arts Museum. Or if you are more active, you may like to join a bike tour and cycle through the history and modern life of KL. In the evening you may wan to experience the multicultural mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures through sampling some of its best food. Walk around local neighbourhoods and visit local grocers and street vendors. Your leader will be on hand making suggestions to help you make the best of the day.

Transfer by local bus to the old port town of Melaka (approximately 3 hours). Back when Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore left little impression on a map, the historic city of Melaka was the most important trading port in Malaysia, attracting Chinese, Indian, Dutch, Portuguese and British traders. These visitors sought wealth or an opportunity to control the Straits of Malacca, a vital trading route between the Indian and Pacific oceans, which lead to 400 years of colonial rule. Today, Melaka's wealth of historical sites reminds visitors of times gone by, and its multicultural past is revealed in its distinctive cuisine. Like Georgetown, the Melaka was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008, and like its Penang sibling, the city is a harmonic mix of cultures, a place where colonial buildings sit next to Chinese shophouses and temples.

Today you’ll get to know this port city better with a quaint trishaw tour along the narrow winding streets. You’ll admire Chinatown's unique Peranakan architecture, get a taste of old Melaka, and learn about the ancient spice trade. Take in sites such as Harmony Street (so called because it contains the prayer houses of Malaysia's three main faiths), and stop by a mosque, Chinese Buddhist Temples, and a traditional Muslim house-museum. In your free time this afternoon there are plenty of historic sights and museums to check out. From 17th century Dutch buildings and ships, to museums that showcase the local history of ethnic Chinese-Malays, the travels of diplomat and explorer Zheng He, and even a museum that focuses on concepts of beauty in different cultures. If you’re looking to get more active, then you could perhaps jump on two wheels for an Eco Bike tour around the city or see Melaka from a different perspective with a boat tour along the river.

Travel by local bus to the last stop on this incredible journey – Singapore (approximately 5 hours). Singapore has few areas untouched by modernisation, however wandering the streets of Little India and Chinatown is a great way to see the old parts of the city. To explore further, check out the renowned shopping precinct of Orchard Road, or stop by Raffles to experience the old world charm of a Singapore Sling. An evening in Singapore is not complete without a stroll along Clarke Quay, or even a river cruise to learn more about the fascinating history of this city. Your accommodation tonight is a centrally located hotel, perfect for easy exploring. Whatever you choose today, maybe gather together your fellow travellers for a celebratory drink or meal as your Bangkok to Singapore adventure comes to an end.

Some rooms in tonight’s accommodation are internal and do not have windows. Border crossing into Singapore can be slow, so some patience at the border would go a long way.

Take a short flight from Singapore to Jakarta to start the next part of your adventure. Arrive in time for a welcome meeting with your new leader and fellow travellers at 6pm. If you get in a little early why not check out some of Jakarta's interesting museums, such as the Wayang (puppetry), Balai Seni Rupa (fine arts) and maritime museums. The National Museum is great for first-time visitors. For a city monument, check out the Monas (National Monument) dedicated to the spirit of the Indonesian people.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers. You will be unaccompanied on this flight but you will be transferred to/from the airports.

Familiarise yourself with the city on a full-day tour of Jakarta with your local leader. Take in Sunda Kelapa port – where the Dutch first landed, temple-filled Chinatown and the old town of Batavia. See Si Jagur – an old Portuguese cannon ornately decorated with a disguised meaning. Visit a Chinese mansion (Chandra Naya) and gain an insight into the beautiful Peranakan architecture. Wander Fatahillah Square, then explore the religious side of the city at Cathedral Church and Istiqlal Mosque – the largest mosque in South East Asia. This morning, take a train to Bandung – a former Dutch city which now boasts a thriving art, shopping and cafe scene. When you arrive around lunch time, you’ll head out for a street food crawl at the Paskal Food Market. Maybe try some satay skewers, gado-gado (a traditional Indonesian salad made from boiled eggs and vegetables) or roasted chicken with rice and vegetables. After, walk off the full belly with a heritage walk through Braga Street – once the centre of local development, this street was home to the first shopping arcade in Bandung, with lots of art deco buildings, shops and a cinema. Sit down for a cup of coffee at a 100-year-old cafe here and watch the world go by.

Today you’ll head out of Bandung for a day trip to the largest volcano in West Java – Tangkuban Perahu, the only volcanic mountain in Indonesia that you can drive to – and its lush surroundings. Circled by pine forests and tea plantations, you’ll soak up the views as you learn about the unique history of the volcano. Take a walk around the craters with your leader, then head to the Ciater Hot Springs. Along the way, visit a local tea plantation to learn about the tea industry in Java, then continue to the hot springs for a relaxing soak to soothe the muscles. Later, you have a free afternoon and evening back in Bandung.

This morning, catch a train to Yogyakarta. This town is one of South East Asia's real gems! Known as Java's cultural heart, Yogyakarta has a great atmosphere and is perfect to explore on foot. From batik workshops to the nearby Hindu and Buddhist temples, Yogya offers a great array of cultural avenues to explore. When you arrive, you’re free to explore at your own pace – just ask your leader for recommendations.

Rise early to avoid the crowds at Candi Borobudur – the largest Buddhist structure on earth. This UNESCO World Heritage site is set in a tranquil park and as you approach, you'll see the temple rise before you, looming among tropical foliage. With your local guide, follow the route of ancient pilgrims, circling the mandala-shaped structure from the early realms towards Nirvana. After, you have a free afternoon. You might like to visit one of Yogya's other heritage temples – Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu complex in Java. Tonight, perhaps catch a performance of the Ramayana Ballet – your leader will be able to check dates and availability for you.

Travel by train, then minivan to Seloliman Nature Reserve today. This peaceful reserve sits on the slopes of the sacred volcano, Mt Penanggungan. When you arrive, you’ll meet some of the volunteers working at the Seloliman Environmental Education Centre and learn about what they do here. For lunch, sit down for some delicious, locally grown organic produce cooked by their staff. The centre's accommodation is atmospheric, even with open-air bathrooms built in harmony with the surrounding forest, so take this opportunity to relax this afternoon. This is a beautiful spot to appreciate nature, sit under the stars as the sun goes down and spend an evening technology-free!

Tour accommodation tonight is in basic bungalows, with very simple bathroom facilities. Due to the jungle location, there are often many insects, so make sure you bring insect repellent.

Join the reserve staff on a walk around the property this morning, learning about the local environment and the Javanese tradition of herbal medicine. You'll gain an insight into the region’s flora and fauna, traditional farming methods, rice production and the mini hydroelectricity plant. Finish up with a traditional jamu demonstration and a tasting of this Javanese herbal medicine. Then, travel to Mt Bromo – the homeland of the Tenggerese. The still-active volcano – standing at 2329 m – is the most well-known of the Tengger massif. Retire early tonight in preparation for tomorrow's early start.

Your early start today (around 3 am) will be well worth it! First, drive to a lookout point in jeeps to catch the sunrise over the sea of sand. After, you’ll climb up to the volcano crater to take a peek inside – the ascent is not too difficult (approximately 45 minutes), but it can be very cold, so don't forget to bring extra layers of clothing. It's also worth bringing a scarf to cover your nose and mouth, as it can get dusty. Return to the hotel to freshen up and then depart midmorning to Kalibaru in a private minivan, stopping for lunch along the way. Tonight, you’re free to relax by the pool or perhaps indulge in a local massage.

• Mt Bromo - Sunrise climb

Mt Bromo is one of the highlights of the trip but it’s very popular, so during holiday periods expect it to be crowded. At times of increased volcanic activity, the crater of Mt Bromo is closed. There may be amendments to your sunrise hike and this portion of the trip depending on necessary safety precautions.

Head out early this morning to tour some nearby coffee and cocoa plantations. You'll see how coffee is dried and if there’s time, how cocoa is fermented. Before you set off, enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and snack on fried bananas – yum! Travel by minibus to the far eastern end of Java – Gilimanuk. There is often a lot of heavy traffic on this stretch of road as it's the main entry point for Bali, so there may be some delays. Next, you'll board a ferry across the Java Strait, then another minibus for a journey along the west coast of Bali to Pemuteran – your destination for the next two nights.

Enjoy a relaxing day in this gorgeous beachside location. Maybe start the day with a yoga class and then explore the local area at your own pace. Otherwise, simply sit back, relax and watch the fishermen go about their day-to-day on one of the beaches.
