22 Best Things To Do In Rincón, Puerto Rico (2024)

  • Things To Do

Rincón is the surf capital of Puerto Rico.

But it has more to offer than just perfect waves.

Being from Puerto Rico, I know Rincón well because it is my second home.

In this article, I will cover the 22 best things to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico:

1. Learn to surf

You don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy what Rincón offers.

But when you see all those surfers having fun, you will want to learn to surf.

image of a guy surfing at Rincon

Rincón Surf School, Surf787, and Puntas Surf School are a few options.

For more information, check out my article on the Top Surf Spots In Puerto Rico (most are in Rincón).

2. Scuba dive

Scuba diving in Rincón is an activity you have to try.

You can scuba dive in Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, where you will meet some turtles, fish, and other marine life.

image of scuba divers in Rincon

The most significant Elk Horn Coral Community of Puerto Rico is in Steps Beach — scuba diving among it is an unforgettable experience.

If you are not a certified SCUBA diver, don’t worry, you can become one with an open water diver course.

Read our article Best Dive Sites In Puerto Rico for more information.

One of the best snorkeling spots on the main island of Puerto Rico is Steps Beach at Rincón.

Tres Palmas Marine Reserve is home to parrot fish, blue tang, surgeonfish, and many others.

image of 2 girls snorkeling at Rincon

You will also interact with turtles and spiny lobsters.

Some companies offer snorkeling tours. Learn more about snorkeling by reading our article Best Snorkeling Spots in Puerto Rico , where Tres Palmas made the list.

4. Paddle board

In Rincón, the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea unite.

Beaches are unique and suitable for several water sports.

Paddle boarding is one of the fastest-growing activities in Rincón.

Some companies will rent you a paddle board, give you paddle board classes and even take you on tour.

Watching the sunset on a paddle board in Rincón is a great experience.

Maria’s Beach is an excellent place for paddle boarding and paddle board surfing.

If you like fishing, come to Rincón.

Rincón has the perfect fishing experiences, from rod and reel fishing on Kayak, spearfishing, and even deep-sea fishing near the uninhabited island of Desecheo.

Mahi Mahi, Tarpon, Snook, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna are fish you can catch in Rincón waters.

6. Swimming

El Balneario of Rincón (Rincón Municipal Beach) is a great place to swim.

A roped-off area is safe for kids and adults alike.

The Balneario offers free parking, restrooms, showers, and an option to rent gazebos.

image of El Balneario of Rincon

Exercise caution while swimming — there are no lifeguards on duty on this beach.

Always remember the universal water safety rule; “never alone.”

There is a small shopping center near the Balneario where you can buy souvenirs and food and have artisanal ice cream.

7. Whale watching

From January to March, humpback whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) come to tropical waters to rest, mate, and care for their calves.

You can see these magnificent animals if you are patient and lucky. Some companies offer sunset boat whale-watching tours.

Check out whale watching in Rincón in the following video:

You can also try to see the whales from the lighthouse El Faro Punta Higuera.

If you are a Certified Open Water Scuba Diver, take the boat trip to dive at Desecheo. On that tour, chances are that you will encounter some humpback whales.

8. Mountain bike

If you like mountain biking, visit Rincón Domes MTB Trail.

This trail is about 3.8 miles (6 kilometers) and can be pretty challenging.

The uphill and downhill sections of the trail will test your abilities.

Below is a video showing Domes MTB trails at Rincón:

Go to Tres Palmas Marine Reserve/Steps Beach for a more relaxing and less challenging mountain bike trail.

9. Take a hike

If you are a walker, you will love Rincón. Take a refreshing morning walk or a relaxing afternoon hike.

You can walk in Sandy Beach, hike on Tres Palmas Marine reserve or stroll down the streets of the town square.

image of Tres Palmas Marine Reserve

Córcega Beach stretches for more than a mile for a great walk.

10. El Último Brinco (The Last Jump)

On road 411, you will find El Ultimo Brinco waterfall and swim hole.

The last jump is like an oasis in the middle of a residential area.

Steep rock walls surround the waterfall.

image of El Ultimo Brinco waterfall

Sometimes you will see locals jumping off the rock to the swimming hole.

El Ultimo Brinco is one of Puerto Rico’s best waterfalls.

For more information, check out the Best Waterfalls In Puerto Rico .

11. Visit the lighthouse

A trip to Rincón is only complete with a visit to Faro Punta Higuera. There is a small park around the lighthouse.

image of Faro Punta lighthouse

You will get a great view of Domes and Marías Beach, and y ou can also buy refreshments and artisan-made souvenirs.

The lighthouse is the best place to watch whales from January to March. They have free parking space at the lighthouse.

On Weekends there is a piraguas (shaved ice cone) cart.  Try the coconut-flavored piragua.

12. Eat fresh seafood

There are several restaurants in Rincón where you can eat the catch of the day.

Go to Maria’s Beach if you like oysters, clams, and octopus salads. Close to the beach, you will find what looks like a hot dog cart but is an oyster stand. In addition, several places sell empanadillas de mariscos (seafood turnovers).

If you are staying in an Airbnb or another place where you have access to a kitchen, try buying freshly caught fish at La Pescaderia (Rincón Fish Market)

13. Join a conservation effort

Steps Beach is one of the best beaches in Puerto Rico.

The community has been fighting to protect it for decades. On January 2004, the government designated the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve to protect this area, a huge win for nature enthusiasts.

The TPMR is the most significant conservation effort in the Islands of Puerto Rico.

Surfrider Foundation Rincón Chapter has an army of volunteers that conserve the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. You can join the conservation effort by volunteering, donating, or buying something at The SRF Rincón store.

Surfrider Foundation Rincón allows you to become an environmental protector and be part of a larger-than-life movement.

For more information, visit Rincón Surfrider .

Get a beach chair or a hammock and head to the beach.

Let the sound of the waves and the sea breeze help you relax.

Many people from the United States mainland have moved to Rincón and brought their lifestyles with them. Yoga and Pilates are big in Rincón.

There are several places where you can practice yoga in Rincón.

image of yoga class in Rincon

You park, walk a few steps to the beach and immerse yourself in this ancient practice.

The beach will enhance your yoga session.

If you practice Pilates, you can join a class and work out with a certified teacher.

16. Workout

You will notice that people in Rincón are very fit. They have plenty of places to exercise.  You can walk, run, jog, hike, or visit a gym.

Rincón has one of the most committed CrossFit communities in Puerto Rico. If you are into Crossfit, go to one of Rincon’s Boxes, and you will have a great workout.

Check out the video below to see one of the free, outdoor tracks in Rincón:

17. Farmer’s Market

El Mercado Agro-Ecologico or The Rincón Farmers Market opens on Sunday at 9 am.

In The Farmer’s Market, you will find various locally grown products.

image of Rincon Farmers Market

Most, if not all, of the products you find in RFM, are organic. They also have locally prepared food and pastries.

Who would have thought they could find Falafel and Jack fruit in Rincón?

Don’t have breakfast before going to the Farmer’s Market.

18. Artisan Night

Every Thursday in Rincón’s Town Square, they have The Art Walk. El Paseo de Los Artesanos is something you must experience.

From 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, artisans and artists sell their artwork at the plaza.

image showing the art walk in Rincón

There is live music and fun in a safe environment. You can pick a few gifts for your loved ones back home. They also have good food freshly prepared there.

You can even get a relaxing massage.

The Art Walk is an excellent opportunity to see the festive spirit of Puerto Ricans.

19. Enjoy the view

Rincón’s landscape is unique.

There are mountains and hills very close to the shore.

image of El Faro de Rincon

From these hills, you will get a stunning view of the ocean. Try driving down road 115 to Domes beach, and you will love the scenery.

Many people go to Rincón Beach House Bar & Grill to enjoy the view from there.  On clear days, you will see Desecheo Island from any beach in Rincón.

Rincón’s nickname is El Pueblo de Los Bellos Atardeceres, the town of beautiful sunsets.

You will agree with the town’s nickname when you see the sunset at Rincón.

The combination of colors painting the sky will leave you speechless.

There are many places where you can see Rincón’s sunset.

My favorite place to see this natural wonder is Punta Higueras Lighthouse.

A sunset boat trip is one of the best ways to enjoy Rincón’s sunset.

21. Go extreme

Extreme water sports enthusiasts will have a great time in Rincón. Fly over one of Rincón’s beaches on a parasail.

image of a parasailing experience in Rincón

Rise above the ocean on a hydro flight (a personal watercraft pushes pressurized water up a hose and then splits into multiple jet nozzles that create a lift for the device and the rider).

Glide above the water on an eFoil (and an electric-powered surfboard that needs no waves).

Kite surf or speed up on a watercraft along the waters of Rincón.

Adrenaline seekers can choose from plenty of options.

22. Bioluminescence Tour

Rincón does not have a bioluminescent bay , but it is just a short drive from La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay in Lajas.

Rincón is only 28 miles from La Parguera Bio Bay.

image of 2 girls swimming in La Parguera Bioluminescence Bay

Puerto Rico has three different bio bays. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and can’t be missed.

You can learn more about Puerto Rico’s bio bays in our article Bioluminescent Bays Puerto Rico – All You Need To Know .

FAQ section

What to do in rincón, puerto rico when it rains.

When it rains, you can have a hot cup of coffee in one of Rincón's many coffee shops. The coffee aroma mixed with the petrichor (the earthy scent produced by rain) will make you feel warm and fuzzy.

What are some romantic things to do in Rincón?

Walk on Sandy Beach and pick up some sea glass as a reminder of your time in Rincón. Watch the sunset together, and you will see your significant other in a different light - pun intended.

Final thoughts

If you are planning to visit Puerto Rico, then you should definitely spend time in the town of Rincón .

My favorite things to do in Rincón are surfing and kayaking in the nearby bio bay .

From deserted beaches to the abundant marine life you can feel peace soaking into your skin as you explore the slow way of Puerto Rican living. Here is my list for the top things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico that will leave you feeling amazing and remind you of what an actual vacation should look like.

1. Desecheo Island Scuba Diving

Desecheo island 12 miles off the coast of Rincon is one of the top 20 places to dive in the Caribbean. The island was previously used by the US military to perform experiments so no one is allowed on the island. The good side to this being that the reef and marine life around the island is pristine. Taino Divers are one of the companies that takes divers out to the island for beginner to advanced diving. You can also do fully guided diving at Desecheo Island .

2. Deep Sea Fishing

This is for those who have the stomach for it. I don’t so I’ve never tried it but deep sea fishing is supposed to be good around Rincon. The undisturbed ecosystem makes for easy catch. Some species that can be found here are tuna, wahoo, dorado, kingfish, rainbow runner, sailfish, mahi mahi. This activity is on the expensive side with a half day charter costing about $750.

3. Snorkeling

One of the top things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico is to enjoy its water sports. It is then no surprise that the best snorkeling in Puerto Rico is at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. The protected marine reserve is abundant with sea life, turtles and reef sharks. I went diving at low tide when the surge was also calm. This is the best time to dive because it’s easy to get in and out of the sea and the visibility is good. Do not get scammed and book a snorkeling tour. You do not need a tour to go snorkeling here. If you are a good swimmer and know the rules of the ocean then you are more than safe going into Tres Palmas and having fun exploring. I didn’t see them myself but if you venture out a little deeper around 50 meters in, you can also see turtles on the ocean floor.

4. Horseback Riding

I did not realize that horse riding was so popular here until I saw a few groups riding down the road in between the cars. Turns out the locals have been using horses as a mode of transportation for a really long time. The horse back riding companies offer trails down the beaches and into the lush forest next to it. Pintos R Us company offers 2 hour riding trails for all levels of riders. This is one of the most unique things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

5. Punta Higuera Lighthouse

The lighthouse which had been guiding ships into Mayaguez Harbor since 1892 was converted into a recreation park in 1993. The park now includes a maritime museum and a platform at the top of the lighthouse for viewing out into the ocean. El Faro also has a small local market in front of the market for local artists and craftspersons. The park is well known for the small eatery it has at the end where you can get local Puerto Rican food and try to spot whales in to bay.

rincon surfing beaches domes beach

6. Thursday Art Walk

Out of all the things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico I most enjoyed strolling through the art walk market in downtown Rincon. The art walk as it is called happens every Thursday evening. The local artists are incredibly talented and you will see some crafts and art which have been part of the culture for thousands of years. For example I saw a vendor with beautiful wood sculptures of the story of the three kings (famous in Puerto Rico). I was very alarmed to see that white artists and people have taken over a lot of the market. Please remember to support the local artists whose home it has been for a long time before buying stuff from generic vendors that you can find back in Los Angeles for 2 bucks.

7. Surfing Class

Of course the list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention surfing class for beginners. If you saw some sexy surfers ripping the waves at Domes beach and wanted to become one yourself then take some lessons! There are lots of local teachers in Rincon that do classes for beginners. My first ever surf lesson was actually at a beach in Rincon and now I’ve been surfing for over a year. The surf lessons are very chill and catered to your needs. No matter your physique, your instructors make sure you have fun while also learning some basic surfing skills. This is my top recommendation for things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

8. Surf at Domes Beach

One of the more advanced surf spots around Rincon, Domes beach has been home to some awesome surf competitions over the years. We happened to chance a competition for kids on the day we went there and it was pretty awesome to see the little babies ripping. Domes beach is the perfect spot to catch a few waves. There is also a very cute swing at the beach for those that prefer to sit and watch instead. You can also rent boards on Maria’s beach right down the road if you prefer not to bring your own. There is no shortage of board rentals in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

9. Waterfalls

Cascada Gozalandia is a two step waterfall around 45 mins from Rincon and I definitely recommend them. The lower waterfall has a big pool and a very high jumping rock that daredevils will love.

Maricao waterfalls are a little further away from Rincon and take 1 hour 15 min to get to. The route passes through the city of Mayaguez which has the best skate park in all of Puerto Rico!

El Ultimo Brinco

This small waterfall is inside the town of Rincon so it tends to get a bit dirty during rainy season with some trash washed up but other than that it is a very pretty place to hang out and enjoy a picnic.

Top Tours in Puerto Rico

The craziest and most adrenaline filled tours to get your heart pumping. These tours combine the best of the natural wonders the island has to offer with great activities.

10. Beaches

The best beach for beginner surfers. There is a van next to the beach that renst surfboards by the hour. I took one out and spent an hour in the water just having fun. There are also some cute restaurants 5 minutes walking from there inland that you can grab lunch at.

The beach right next to the now defunct huge nuclear reactor. The beach is for advanced surfers since the swell can get big and nasty. I saw a lot of surf photographers with their equipment here all the time. There is a swing here and lots of place to spread your towel and tan.

Maria’s

This has been taken over by the white people coming to town because of the 4 really trendy cafes that are right next door. There is no actual beach here at high tide, only rocks that you can sit on. The paddle out from this beach is really really far for the break. There is also a surf rental shop here on the beach. I haven’t been here during low tide but maybe there are better conditions then?

Tres Palmas

My favorite beach in Puerto Rico. At high tide you can only go to the entrance of the beach but at low tide the beach has lots of saltwater pools that kids and adults can play in or relax. It’s also part of the marine reserve so at low tide you can go in and snorkeling in some of the most beautiful ocean space I’ve ever seen.

Rincon Public Beach

This beach is inside Rincon town. It has lots of restaurants and washroom facilities. There are also vendors offering hourly massages on the beach. Too many white people here for my liking acting like stupid tourists so I skipped this beach most days except to grab ice cream at the shop in the food court.

tour in rincon puerto rico

Sunsets in Rincon never disappoint you. Maybe it’s the magic of watching the sun set behind the wide vast ocean or the colors that shimmer on the clouds. It might be cliche to add sunsets to the list of things to do in Rincon, but try and catch at least one sunset on the coast and you might agree with me.

12. Whale Cruise

The passage to the left of Puerto Rico falls in the migration zone for the whale going to the north Atlantic ocean during the months of January to March. This is the mating and birthing season for the whales and you can see tourists lining up with binoculars at Punta Higuera Lighthouse to try and catch a glimpse of a whale. If you prefer a closer sighting, companies like Taino Divers offer sunset cruises to get a close look at the whales. Since there are only 15 thousands of these majestic creatures left in the ocean this is one of the most rare things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico that you might not be able to do anywhere close by.

13. Downtown

The downtown in Rincon has really grown from being a few tiny shops to lots of cool shops selling all kinds of knick knacks, ice cream, clothing and art. It is very cool to wander around town for a couple hours in the evening and then get a pizza at the pizza parlor. Some cool shops you might want to check are Caribbean Trading, Ocean State of Mind and Mango Beach Shop. The restaurants are all in the small town square so you can’t miss all the cool food they have to offer. Try going there on the weekend but not on Thursday which tends to get busy due to the Art Walk.

14. Sandy Beach Sea Glass

A really unique things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico that isn’t found in many places is hunting for sea glass. Sea glass is when pieces of broken glass in the ocean gets rubbed by the water over the years and forms smooth tiny glass pebbles. The glass pebbles are really pretty and you can even try and identify where the glass came from. Since humankind has thankfully become more conscious of not throwing glass into the ocean over the years, sea glass has become more and more rare to find. The best time to find sea glass is during the rainy season at low tide. This is because all the debris left over from high tide stays on the beach. If you are into sea glassing then the best beach for this are the northern beaches of Rincon that face the ocean and tend to have more debris from the rain.

15. Playa Oeste Gallery

This beautiful gallery in Rincon showcases the heritage and art associated with the surfing culture of Puerto Rico. They have been in business for the last 19 years, supporting local artists through art forms such as woodwork, painting, sea glass jewelry that is intricately connected with the sea. This is a very interesting thing to do in Rincon if you are an art connoisseur and like to support the locals.

rincon restaurant near the beach

16. Cycle Tour

One of my most memorable days in Rincon was when I rented a road bike and rode all the way from Stella to Sandy Beach and back. Bar an incident where I lost control going downhill, it was a very fun biking experience that I will remember forever. Renting a bike and then exploring the surrounding area is one of the best ways to spend a day in Rincon. If you want to follow the route that I did, then just type Sandy Beach into Google Maps and follow the route for cars.

17. BONUS Technological Museum

The Boiling Nuclear Superheater (BONUS) reactor was one of the first nuclear reactors to be built in Latin America. It is now defunct and acts as a museum that aims to showcase the importance of Puerto Rico in developing energy infrastructure in the United States. The exhibit portrays the history of Puerto Rican culture, the colonization that followed and how the island was used to further the energy goals for the US. It is a very important exhibit if you want to understand the depth of the United States intrusion into the lives of the people on this island.

18. Villa Cofresi Pirate Drink

The pirate drink at Villa Cofresi will knock a grown man on his ass. An entire coconut is filled with coconut water and rum. I could barely finish even 14th of the drink before I gave up and ate my fries. Villa Cofresi also sits right next to the ocean so we watched the sunset and saw a couple propose while drinking the pirate. This is a fun thing to do in Rincon if you don’t have any plans for the evening. Follow this by a dinner in their restaurant and you will have successfully orchestrated the perfect romantic evening.

19. Local Food

It will not be a Puerto Rican holiday without some finger licking Puerto Rican food. Fortunately Rincon has local vendors with their food trucks almost at every corner. From pastillos filled with chicken or guava to plantain chips and their famous mayo, ketchup and salsa sauce you can try all Puerto Rican dishes here. Just venture out and walk along the main road and sooner than later you will stumble upon a group of food trucks waiting for you.

20. Gastropark@115

Gastropark@115 is a huge food court with lots of local vendors selling local and international fares. If you want to try lots of Puerto Rican food in one place then this is where you should come. Their cuisines include sushi, Italian, Mexican and Puerto Rican. This is the best place to have dinner if you are staying in Rincon.

Adventure Tours

Puerto Rico has some really cool adventure tours that take you around the island. If you are into hiking then visit the El Yunque Rainforest with insane waterfalls and hikes. Another really fun day trip is a Catamaran Cruise to Culebra island where you get to party and relax on the sea. And finally, come swim with turtles in San Juan Bay.

21. Mountain Bike Park

Sporting is a huge part of things to do in Rincon, Puerto Rico. There is a very cool small mountain biking course outside Rincon when you drive towards Stella. The compound also has an outdoor gym, a playground for kids and a small track for race car driving. If you want to do one of the harder mountain biking trails in the forest, this would be a good place to start learning how to do jumps.

22. Domes MTB Trail

Behind dome beach is a very cool mountain biking trail that we stupidly decided to take our road bikes on. The trails are super fun and zig zag through the hills right down to the beach. It is an intermediate trail approximately 4 miles in length end to end. If you love adrenaline then you cannot miss this thing to do in Rincon. You can rent mountain bikes from Rincon Mountain Bike Pro Shop.

23. Day Trips From Rincon

Camuy Caves

These caves are part of the third largest underground river system in the world. The river has carved out limestone caves and underwater rock ways. A small part of the cave system is now open to the public. It is super fun disappearing into the darkness and exploring this natural wonder.

The city of Mayaguez is a much less travelled city in Puerto Rico because of the low publicity it has received but it a gem. It has the best skatepark in Puerto Rico and beaches that can rival any of those in Rincon or San Juan.

24. Restaurants in Rincon

These are some of the best restaurants in Rincon, Puerto Rico. If you are looking to go out and enjoy dinner then these 4 restaurants will not disappoint you.

  • The Beach House
  • Rincon Beer Company
  • Tamboo Tavern

Rincon has many beaches, sports such as deep sea fishing, surfing, mountain biking and snorkeling. It also has lots of opportunities to chill, eat, drink and shop in peace.

We had a great time on the Sea Reina private charter! Our family of four adults and two kids-the boat was super spacious. Captain Scott brought us to 2 killer snorkeling areas, and then showed us all the surf breaks on the north shore of Rincon. His wife even made us lunch, which was an extra bonus.🤙 highly recommend this charter!

— Amanda K.

katarina-sail-charters2.jpeg

We had an amazing time sailing around the coast and watching the sunset. Capt. Brian and Shane were a fantastic crew. The drinks were fabulous. DJ Brian brought his A Game with the playlist and whale facts. Shane’s snacks and service were top notch. The views were amazing. We can’t wait to come back next year and do it again! Thanks for a fabulous night!

katarina-sail-charters3.jpeg

Incredible experience! The crew is great and the food is fantastic. Charted complete catamaran for my daughter’s 16th birthday. She and her guests loved it. Rincón’s coast and beaches are beautiful. Geraldine was so helpful with the details and her crew is outstanding. 100% recommended.

What to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico | 3 Day Itinerary

I’ve been coming to Rincón, Puerto Rico since the age of 7 when my parents brought my sister and I on our very first island vacation.  I’ve been to Rincón countless times, both in my childhood and adult life so this island, and particularly Rincón, is super special to me! (and to so many others)

There are so many amazing things to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico and i’m going to share with you what to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico with a packed 3-day itinerary including where to eat, drink, stay and the best things to do!

Must Read: Top 14 Fun Things to do in Rincón Puerto Rico

Although part of the US, Puerto Rico has maintained its culture and ways of life and thats truly what should be loved about it!  A small surfing town on the less popular west coast of Puerto Rico, Rincón is the perfect Caribbean weekend (or week!) getaway.  Rincón definitely has a vibe!  Come to soak in the tropical sunshine, surf in the warm ocean, drink a rum punch, put your feet up and relax!

If you’re on Puerto Rico’s east coast be sure to Bar Hop around Old San Juan or take a ferry to Isla Culebra or Vieques !

You can also sign up for a free Quick Guide to Rincón to download to your computer or phone for easy access to all of my recommendations and links for future use!

Check your inbox or spam folder to confirm your subscription.

what to do in rincon puerto rico

Is Rincón, Puerto Rico worth visiting?

Absolutely! Rincon is located on Puerto Rico’s west coast (opposite from San Juan) and it is a tropical paradise. Rincón is a popular tourist town but you won’t find large hotels and shopping malls here. There are tons of things to do in Rincón. (read about them here )

How to get to Rincón, Puerto Rico

The best way to get to Rincón from the US mainland is to fly into Aguadilla airport (BQN) The drive is then 30-45 minutes south.

Is Rincón, Puerto Rico walkable?

There are a few areas in Rincón that are walkable however, I would highly recommend renting a car. The town is a bit spread out and you wouldn’t want to be confined to one small area during your vacation.

Can you Swim at the beaches in Rincón?

Yes! There are beaches with calm Caribbean water and a soft sandy bottom. (read about them here )

Does Rincón have nightlife?

Also, yes. There are a handful of great happy hour bars as well as nightlife bars in town. Keep reading below to find out more!

Day 1 – What to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico

First things first.  Get your coffee fix at either  Cafe to Go  (my personal favorite) or  Jakes Java  depending on which side of town you are staying on. Ask for steamed milk – its so much better this way!

After grabbing a coffee to start your morning head to one of Rincon’s many bakeries for a ham, egg & cheese on Puerto Rican water bread. Or you can stop by the Wandering Bagel for a NY style bagel.

Rincon, Puerto Rico

For a beach day head down to  Maria’s Beach where you can surf or take a lesson to learn how to surf with an instructor. Pack a cooler for your beach day with beverages and snacks or order lunch at  Calypso  restaurant for a bite to eat & a tropical drink.

rum drink in a coconut

After a solid beach day shower up and head to  Villa Cofresi   for their famous Piratas (coconut-rum drinks!) and  watch the sunset .  One of my favorite things to do in Rincon!

Find out my top places to watch the Sunset in Rincón, Puerto Rico here!

After coconut drinks, head to town and browse local art at Rincon’s Art Walk in the town square. ( Thursday nights only )

Once you build up an appetite for dinner you can choose from one of the many restaurants in town. I love La Sirena for sushi, Gylro for gyros or head to  La Cambija  (just outside of town and one of my all-time favorites) for Puerto Rican food. Definitely get the loaded fries to share… or not to share!

For a fun night out in town I recommend La Estacion or Abajo Bar.

Day 2 – What to do in Rincón, Puerto Rico

Start your morning in paradise with a yoga class right on the beach at  Bare Foot Yoga  or if cycling is more your speed head to  Rincon Ride . There is also a beautiful walking path along the Tres Palmas Reserve but be mindful of the time because there is minimal shade and it gets hot early!

Make a reservation at  The English Rose  for breakfast or brunch.  The view is incredible from up here and the breakfast is so good!  This is a must while you are visiting Rincón.

view from english rose rincon puerto rico

If there are no waves to go surfing, or you are not into surfing at all, spend a day at picturesque  Steps beach .  Bring your snorkel, mask and fins, Step’s has some of the best snorkeling in Rincón and is located on a protected marine reserve. This is another one of my favorite things to do in Rincon but be careful where you get in and out of the water to go swimming or snorkeling.  Watch where others are going in first before you jump in!

Click here to read about the Top Beaches in Rincón , Puerto Rico!

If you’re full from brunch at the English Rose but need an afternoon snack go into town to Napolitana and grab an authentic Puerto Rican Empanadilla and sit in the town square and people watch.

sun setting with palm trees and ocean in rincon puerto rico - best places to watch the sunset in rincon

Don’t miss an epic sunset in Rincón. Most sunset bars will have happy hour specials. Some of my favorite bars for happy hour are: Calypso and Ola Sunset Cafe .

After happy hour head to  Casa Isleña  (ps- they also have a great breakfast!) for a fresh and awesome dinner.  Casa Isleña is on the Puntas side of town and if it is a Saturday night and you want to go out after dinner walk over to Casa Verde for a few drinks which is in walking distance from Casa Isleña.

For another great family friendly restaurant option I love  Shipwreck  for a nice and casual seafood dinner in the marina.

In the morning while you are grabbing a cup of coffee from Cafe to Go you should also pick up a refreshing açai bowl.  I love adding peanut butter to any bowl!

acai bowl from juice box rincon

Go to  Sandy Beach   for the day to go swimming and play in the surf if it is not too windy (this side of Rincon can get windier than the southern side of town)  If too windy, head to the beach at the Marina where its very calm an you can swim. ( click here  to read about the best beaches in Rincón)

Tamboo  is a great restaurant right on the beach at Sandy Beach.  Come here for a great lunch with unbeatable views.  The Piña Colada here is my favorite!

If you want something more casual  Jack’s Shack  is a great semi-healthy food truck just down the street! The fish sandwich is unreal!!

sandy beach rincon puerto rico

For sunset happy hour head to  Ola Sunset Cafe   overlooking Domes Beach and watch the surfers down below.

If it’s your last night, and you want something a little special go to  La Copa Llena  or La Cambija at Tres Palmas for dinner.  Both restaurants have lovely sunset views and lovely ambiance.  Listen to the waves crash on to the shore and enjoy an amazing meal with an amazing view.

Hi! Love your blog! We are traveling to Rincon with 3 teenage boys who are not surfers but are very athletic. Any activities I could do with them?

If they’re up for it I would definitely take a surf lesson. Other more active things to do would be snorkeling or stand up paddle boarding. I have a whole post on things to do in Rincon here 🙂 https://trvlcollective.com/things-to-do-in-rincon-puerto-rico/

Hi Ariana ! I’m visiting Rincón and enjoyed your article ! I have my own snorkeling gear and have snorkeled from the shore at steps beach! I see that there are snorkeling trips on a boat available but I’m just wondering if it is any better than from shore in Rincon! Thanks for your thoughts ! Elisabeth

The snorkeling trips will take you to the outer reefs or you can book a trip to snorkel Desecheo island and that is incredible!!!

Sushi!? Gyro!? Açaí bowl!!? Puerto Rican food is so good and this is what you ate while there!?

Hey! We actually spend 6+ weeks there each winter so no that’s not the only places I’ve eaten at. And I do recommend Puerto Rican food and locally owned restaurants.

Iconic Instagrammable Places in Puerto Rico

We have loads of spots to cover in this blog, but the ones I’ve about to share below are what I consider to be the most iconic spots based on my experience visiting Puerto Rico!

#1 Yokahú Tower

cloudy day over the yokahu observation tower in puerto rico

Yokahú Tower is a tower you can visit in El Yunque and the view from the top is so beautiful!

I highly recommend you make time to come here and snap some pictures during your visit!

It might get crowded but there isn’t much avoiding that.

#2 Cuartel de Ballajá

girl n a white dress walking along cuartel de ballaja puerto rico

Cuartel de Ballajá is a beautifully restored historic building in Old San Juan, featuring colorful arches and a large courtyard.

The pastel tones and grand architecture make it a perfect spot for capturing Puerto Rico’s colonial charm.

When I went here, I LOVED the geometric courtyard and couldn’t stop gawking at how eye-catching it looked when you pointed your camera through an archway.

There is also a beautiful yellow building you can explore here.

Whether you’re photographing the arches or the view from the upper floors, every angle is Instagrammable!

#3 Calle Las Monjas

girl in a white dress standing on calle las monjas in old san juan

Calle Las Monjas is a charming street in Old San Juan lined with colorful buildings.

The vibrant hues and cobblestone roads make it a perfect backdrop for photos.

It’s one of those spots that feels like you’ve stepped back in time, with endless picture-worthy angles.

When you visit, I recommend walking the street heading towards the water.

You’ll be greed with a super cute yellow building you can take photos of.

#4 Hotel El Convento

girl in red dress standing outside the steps on hotel el convento

Hotel El Convento is a stunning, historic hotel with classic Spanish architecture.

The arches, tiled floors, and lush courtyard create a dreamy setting for photos.

This is a pretty popular spot to take photos of.

I recommend exploring the outside area and taking pictures on its famous staircase!

#5 Calle San Sebastian

calle san sebastian san juan

Calle San Sebastian is a lively, colorful street in Old San Juan, famous for its festivals and nightlife.

The street is filled with vibrant buildings, balconies, and unique street art.

It’s a must for anyone looking to capture the true essence and energy of San Juan.

#6 Los Morrillos Lighthouse

cloudy day over los morrillos lighthouse in puerto rico

Los Morrillos Lighthouse sits on a dramatic cliff with sweeping ocean views.

The white lighthouse against the bright blue sky and rugged coastline makes for stunning shots.

I personally love the super bright teal shutters against the blueish grey color of the rest of the lighthouse.

It adds some extra charm and uniqueness you won’t find on others.

From my experience, you can come here during the day and the lighting is still super beautiful! Even if you don’t take pictures, make sure you stop here if you visit Cabo Rojo

Puerto Rico Instagram Spots in San Juan

Beautifully blending history, culture, and modern charm, the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan, boasts colorful streets, historical landmarks, and a lively atmosphere that photo lovers crave.

#7 Puerto Rican Flag Door + Calle Imperial

puerto rico puerto rican flag door san juan

The Puerto Rican Flag Door on San José Street stands as a token of the island’s pride.

The painted door has changed hues in the past, from red, blue, and white, to just black and white.

It stands out against the derelict building, making for a very aesthetic photo.

Just a two-minute walk from the flag door, you’ll walk along Calle Imperial — a street dotted with vibrant historic buildings and another flag door.

#8 Umbrella Street (Los Paraguas de la Fortaleza)

girl in yellow pants taking a picture along calle fortaleza

Set along Calle de la Fortaleza, the numerous umbrellas above this street create a beautiful picture.

BUT, I have to address the obvious: the photo I have above doesn’t feature umbrellas because, well, there were no umbrellas when I went LMAO.

Regardless, this cobblestone street is covered with a canopy of brightly colored umbrellas, creating a playful, eye-catching, and aesthetic display that’s perfect for your Instagram feed.

Walk under the colorful umbrellas, browse nearby shops, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

For the best shot, take it from below to emphasize the umbrellas against the blue sky.

It’s a popular place for pictures but I still enjoyed visiting here because it’s so beautiful and colorful!

#9 Plaza de Armas

Puerto Rico is filled with historic squares, but none are as picturesque as Plaza de Armas.

Surrounded by colonial-era buildings, lush greenery, and boasting a beautiful fountain, this plaza offers a serene escape from the city’s bustling streets.

Explore nearby shops and coffee shops, like Puchy’s Café, sit and admire the square’s historic charm, and photograph the fountain surrounded by trees and historic buildings.

Tip: Visit this square and other landmarks with an immersive Old San Juan walking tour .

#10 Plaza Del Quinto Centenario

sunny day over the totem in Plaza Del Quinto Centenario puerto rico

On Calle del Cristo, you’ll find another interesting square, Plaza Del Quinto Centenario.

Built to mark the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas, the square boasts a 40-feet-tall tower, El Totem Telúrico, that’s begging for you to take a picture.

#11 Castillo San Felipe del Morro

puerto rico el morro fort

Giving you views of the Atlantic Ocean and Old San Juan, this 16-century fortress is one of the oldest but prettiest places to take pictures on the island, especially at sunset.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro, or El Morro, is brown and moldy, but the contrasting blue ocean and green lawns around it make it a work of art.

When the sun sets, the fortress is bathed in golden hues, creating a dramatic and romantic setting perfect for photography.

I also really love the framing here. If you stand along one of the small viewpoints like the one featured above, you get such a beautiful, naturally framed image.

Also, fun fact, this area is close to the famous cat sanctuary so you might get lucky and spot some kitties, haha.

P.S.: Why not combine your Old San Juan exploration with this El Morro Castle walking tour ?

#12 Plaza Dársena + Rainbow Arch

Overlooking the San Juan harbor, this lively plaza is the go-to spot for catching stunning waterfront views, ocean tours, and enjoying live music and art exhibitions.

You’ll find many restaurants here, serving hot dogs, ice cream, and even drinks to quench the thirst.

The star of the show, however, is the colorful Rainbow Arch.

This art installation frames the ocean (and sometimes cruise ships arriving at port), creating the perfect Insta photo scenery.

#13 “I Love Puerto Rico” Sign

Under a 10-minute walk from Plaza Dársena, you can take one of the best pictures of Puerto Rico.

The “I Love Puerto Rico” sign on Calle Marina is a popular tourist attraction that’s perfect for a quick photo op that ensures there’s no debate on whether you’ve been to PR.

Capture the sign from the front for a classic shot, or get creative with angles and take snaps with the harbor (and maybe cruise ships) behind it.

#14 Plazuela La Rogativa

sunny day over statue at Plazuela La Rogativa

This is one of my favorite plazas in the San Juan area because you get ocean views from it!

I love and highly recommend you make a stop here during your visit to the area.

You can take some amazing pictures during the day time then continue walking around!

#15 Plaza De La Catedral

sunny day over plaza de la catedral old san juan instagrammable spot

And this, this plaza right here is a gem. Plaza De La Catedral is an amazing little spot to sit down and take a break from walking around Old San Juan.

However it’s also extremely photogenic.

It usually features a unique statue (when I went there was a cat giraffe LOL), but the star of the plaza is the giant majestic tree in the center.

Most Photographed Places in Puerto Rico for Nature Lovers

The lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems make Puerto Rico a tropical paradise.

For nature lovers there are many spots perfect for capturing this beauty.

#16 Gozalandia Falls

puerto rico gozalandia falls san sebastian

Located in San Sebastián, west of San Juan, the Gozalandia Falls are one of the most stunning nature spots in Puerto Rico.

The two-tiered waterfall is not only pretty, but it’s also a great spot for swimming, hiking the trails, and immersing yourself in the dense rainforest.

Capture the cascading waterfalls from a distance to show their full height, or get up close to photograph yourself amidst the splashing water.

#17 El Yunque National Forest

puerto rico la mina el yunque

Now, to the eastern flank of the island, El Yunque National Forest awaits with its lush vegetation, waterfalls, exotic wildlife, and breathtaking views.

Perfect for hiking and wildlife spotting, El Yunque offers a motherload of photo-ops surrounded by tropical flora and fauna.

And I LOVE it here. It gives off such jungle vibes.

You can easily take endless photos surrounded by all the lush green plants.

Take a day trip from San Juan to El Yunque and capture the vibrant green canopy, misty mountain tops, or flowing streams and waterfalls.

A shot from the top of Yokahu Tower with the forest stretching out below is a must-have for your feed.

Beachy Places to Take Pictures in Puerto Rico

Known for their stunning beauty, from pristine white sands to vibrant pink waters, Puerto Rico’s beaches are a must-visit for jaw-dropping pictures.

#18 Luquillo Beach

puerto rico luquillo beach

Tell me this little red lifeguard station isn’t a vibe and a half.

Affectionately called “La Monserrate,” Luquillo Beach presents you with the pinnacle of Puerto Rican beach life.

The crescent-shaped beach is lined with coconut palms and soft sands, ideal for a beach selfie that could increase your Instagram followers organically .

Swim in the clear waters for underwater snaps, paddleboard, or just pose under the shade of a palm tree.

The nearby kiosks and eateries like A Fuego Bar & Restaurant offer you a variety of local food options, to post some food content as well.

#19 Flamenco Beach

girl in a red bikini jumping off a boat to flamenco beach culebra

Located on Culebra Island, this secluded beach offers white sands, turquoise waters, and graffitied military tanks along its shores.

If that’s not an Instagram-worthy picture, what is? If you’re not taking photos, spend time swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing on the beach.

If you take a boat tour here, I HIGHLY recommend that you take some vibey pictures diving off the boat!

They turn out so fun and kinda make it look like you own a private yacht. KIDDING.

#20 Salinas de Cabo Rojo

sunny day over the salinas de cabo rojo

Prepare to have your mind blown at Salinas de Cabo Rojo — okay well it’s not THAT mind blowing but the colors are pretty cool!

Earning its place as a historical landmark, these salt flats undoubtedly offer one of the best Puerto Rico aesthetic pictures.

The surreal landscape surrounding the vivid pink waters beautifully contrasts, creating a picture-perfect image with lush greenery and blue ocean waters in the background.

Candidly a lot of the magic here will happen after you edit pictures. Depending on the time of day you go, the pink can be hard to capture!

#21 Condado Beach

puerto rico condado beach

Back in San Juan, Condado Beach is the go-to spot for a relaxed day at the beach.

It is surrounded by turquoise waters and golden sands, with a cityscape in the background.

Besides taking photos, enjoy a day of sunbathing, swimming, and water sports like water biking or paddleboarding.

Otherwise, you can simply enjoy biking along the scenic promenade for even more gorgeous snaps.

puerto rico punta higuero lighthouse rincon

On the west side of the island, Rincón is a coastal town famous for surfing and breathtaking sunsets.

There are too many beaches to name in this county, but any of them will give you that beachy vibe you’re looking for.

The landscape here is quite diverse. From volcanic craters to hot springs, beaches, and tropical settings, you won’t have any shortage of things to photograph.

Pretty Places in Puerto Rico for Foodies

The island’s culinary scene cannot be separated from its beautiful landscapes and lively culture.

If you’re a foodie, here are some spots to get the perfect picture of Puerto Rico.

#23 Bistro Café

puerto rico bistro café san juan

Coffee mugs hanging from the ceiling, flamingo wallpaper, and industrial-style furniture — that’s Bistro Café on Calle Júpiter.

They also serve aesthetically pleasing dishes and drinks, from pancakes and waffles to creamy cappuccinos, tangy spritzers, and colorful cocktails.

#24 St. Germain Bistro & Café

puerto rico st. germain bistro old san juan

Arguably one of the best Old San Juan Instagram spots, the pink St. Germain Bistro & Café is not only a great place to go for a filling meal but also to snap a picture of the century.

Offering a cozy atmosphere and farm-to-table menu, this restaurant is a fantastic spot to savor creative local dishes in a warm and inviting environment.

#25 La Casita de Rones

Last, but not least, another pink-colored eatery awaits, but this time hot pink. La Casita de Rones , or “The Little House of Rum,” is simply marvelous.

Capture the colorful exterior of the historic building, the beautifully crafted cocktails, or the scenic views from the restaurant.
