Dieng Plateau In Java: Lakes, Sunrise & Volcanoes

Dieng Plateau is a natural wonder tucked in the highlands of central Java , Indonesia , not too far from the city of Yogyakarta.

This former caldera complex has everything from active volcanoes to ancient Hindu temples, smoking sulfuric springs, multicolored lakes, fresh mountain air, sunrise views, and endless terraces covering the hills in every direction.

Me and a buddy spent a full day exploring Dieng last summer, and we were blown away by this hidden gem and how few international tourists seem to know about it. The Dieng Plateau sunrise is especially good.

Dieng means ‘Abode of the Gods,’ and that name seems about right for the incredible scale and mystery of this place! This travel blog will explain how you can get to Dieng Plateau, and everything you need to know before you go!

Where Is Dieng Plateau?

Dieng Plateau is located 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Yogyakarta city in central Java, Indonesia.

The nearest airport is also in Yogyakarta (YIA), and it’s served by a bunch of budget friendly airlines with good ratings. You can shop for flights to Yogyakarta at Skyscanner.

Despite the short distance, the drive from Yogya to Dieng Plateu takes much longer than you would expect — about 4 hours — because of the winding mountain roads. I don’t think I’ve ever come so close to throwing up in a car.

Still, don’t let the long drive put you off from coming here, because Dieng Plateau was honestly one of the coolest highlights of our time in Java !

How To Get There

The easiest and best way to visit Dieng Plateau is with a shared tour or a private driver from Yogyakarta for the full day.

If you want to do this with a vetted tour company, GetYourGuide has high rated day tours to Dieng Plateau from Yogyakarta .

The tours include hotel pickup and drop-off, all entrance fees, and an English speaking tour guide. We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Another option is to hire a local driver from Yogya yourself and negotiate the terms directly, and that way you can try to add some extra sights if you have any in mind.

It’s almost 8 hours of roundtrip driving, and we spent another 5 hours exploring the sights!  

Dieng Plateau: What To Expect

Sunrise on the volcano is one of the highlights of a trip to Dieng Plateau, but unfortunately the 4 hour drive from Yogyakarta means you’ll need a very early start.

Our driver picked us up at 11:00 PM (yes you read that right), but this was overkill. We arrived at Sikunir hill with time to spare and ended up sleeping in the van for something like 2 hours.

Do take a big nap on the day before, and ask your driver for the latest start possible!

What To Bring

• Jacket: It’s chilly, so definitely bring a jacket or hoodie. You can shed it after sunrise. This is a higher elevation than most of Indonesia, so temps before sunrise can be as low as 8 C (47 F).
• Long Pants: See above. Pants are a good idea to stay warm.
• Hiking Shoes: The sunrise hike is not sandal friendly, and may be muddy. Wear shoes.
• Flashlight: You’ll want a flashlight (or your phone will work) for hiking in the dark before sunrise.
• Camera: Duh! You will definitely want a camera and drone to capture the scenery of this place.

Things To Do & See At Dieng Plateau

One of the main attractions of Dieng Plateau is watching the sunrise over Mount Sundoro, one of Java’s active volcanoes.

The popular spot to do this is on Sikunir Hill, at the eastern edge of the plateau. Your driver can help you find the trailhead, and the path itself is pretty easy to follow. From the car park, it’s a steep but short hike to the top of the hill, and only takes about 30-45 minutes.

Keep going until you reach the highest point for photos. If the sunrise in Dieng Plateu is at 5:20 AM, then you want to be at the top of the hill no later than 5:00, or maybe even 4:45 so you can find a good spot for taking photos.

At the top, we hunkered down with a bunch of friendly Indonesian locals who wanted to take selfies with us since they rarely see bule-bule (westerners) here. The sunrise was foggy, but beautiful.

• Telaga Warna Lake

This is a pair of sulfuric lakes that turn weird shades of green and yellow.

You can view the lakes from above for 30k Rupiah, or pay 100k to walk down to the bottom. When we went, there was no one at the ticket booth so we got to see the upper lakes for free.

My advice: skip the lower viewpoint, it’s overpriced and the best views are above the lakes anyway.

• Hill Terraces

Dieng Plateau is loaded with terraces of potatoes, strawberries, and other crops.

You can hike around to some of these hills if you have extra time, but the roads and hills at Dieng are not very pedestrian friendly.

The very best way to see the terraces is by drone . This place is drone heaven.

• Sikidang Crater

This is a big smoking sulfur crater accompanied by lots of smaller bubbling geothermal pots.

You can expect the usual stinking sulfur smell, and there are also a bunch of tacky ornaments and gaudy selfie spots (including a big stuffed gorilla) that kind of cheapen the experience and make it even weirder.

• Arjuna Temple

Dieng Plateu has a bunch of 7th century temples that are actually some of the oldest surviving buildings on the island of Java.

Arjuna Temple is in the best condition, and entry is included for free as part of the ticket you already bought for Sikidang Crater.

Hotels Near Dieng Plateau

If you feel like staying longer in the area, there are a bunch of homestay options in Dieng Plateau and the nearby city of Wonosobo .

We decided to base ourselves in Yogyakarta instead, and visit Dieng on a day trip. There are lots of great hotels , restaurants, and malls in Yogya with very affordable prices!  

Where We Stayed

We stayed at stepHouse Homestay in Yogyakarta . It was $17 USD per night for a clean twin room with A/C, private bathroom, and fast WiFi.

One of the biggest positives of this homestay is the location. It was walking distance to the Malioboro mall and train station, which is perfect if you're planning to take the train to Malang to visit Tumpak Sewu and Mount Bromo like we were!

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.

Is Java Safe?

I’d say definitely yes , Java is safe, and I’ve visited the island many times over the years.

Indonesia has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world . We walked around Yogyakarta at all hours of the day and night, and always felt safe.

Nowhere in the world is perfectly safe, but Indonesia gets millions of tourists every year, and many of them visit Java.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Java (and most parts of Indonesia) is from April to November.

The rainy season runs from November to April. You can still go to Dieng Plateau during this time, but it won’t be ideal for the mountains or sunrise because fog is more common.

• By Train : Take a train to Purwokerto or Yogyakarta.
• By Bus : Take a bus to Wonosobo from the Giwangan Bus Terminal. The journey takes around 3-4 hours.
• By Car : You can rent a car or hire a driver for a more comfortable trip. The drive takes approximately 3 hours.
• By Bus : Buses to Wonosobo are available from the Terboyo Bus Terminal. The trip usually takes around 4-5 hours.
• By Car : Renting a car or hiring a driver is an option, with a travel time of about 4 hours.
• By Public Transport : Minibuses (known locally as “angkot” or “microbus”) regularly travel from Wonosobo to Dieng Plateau. The trip takes about 1-2 hours.
• By Car/Motorbike : Renting a car or motorbike is also possible for more flexibility. The scenic drive takes about 1 hour.

Dieng Plateau: A Guide to the Highlands of Java

Have you ever heard about Dieng plateau ? Yes? No? Dieng plateau is more commonly known as Dieng plateau Wonosobo, though the plateau is located in Banjarnegara and Wonosobo regency, Central Java. The plateau offers a mixture of nature, heritage and tourism sites. There are some beautiful lakes, hills, breathtaking scenery, as well as refreshing tea and coffee plantations. Plus, being high up it’s very cool and refreshing.

To help you arrange your trip to Dieng I’ve created this guide. It covers everything from how to get from Yogyakarta to Dieng, what to see when you are in Dieng and where to stay. You can use the links below to jump to the relevant part of this Dieng guide.

4 Things to Do in Dieng

Dieng is a three-hour drive away from Yogyakarta in the highlands of Java. It’s an isolated place far enough away from the tourist trail that you don’t get the usual crowds. Yet there are a lot of fun things to do in Dieng.I’ll share some of my favourite spots in Dieng that you should visit whenever you get the chance. Please be advised that this list is not in any particular order.

1. Telaga Warna – Telaga Pengilon

Though some people say that this place is overrated, I still think Telaga Warna and Telaga Pengilon area is a great place to explore. It is also very beautiful. In fact most people who come to Dieng do so just to visit this complex (Telaga Warna and Telaga Pengilon). They don’t walk around the area and never find out about the other attractions.

Telaga Warna, a lake is incredibly colorful with shades of red, green, blue, white, and violet, while Telaga Pengilon, pretty much a normal color with clear waters. The unique thing is the waters don’t mix.

Besides enjoying the two lakes, you can also visit the Gua Sumur cave. The cave is actually inside the complex of Telaga Warna and Telaga Pengilon lakes.

There are two places where you can enjoy the view of the lakes from above. One is from Sidengkeng hill Petak 9 Dieng and the other one is from Batu Pandang Dieng. Check out the two photos below to see the difference.

2. Kawah Sikidang Dieng

Kawah or is crater in English. Though I’ve been twice to Dieng, but I never really got to see the crater (yeah shame on me). Some of my friends say that it worth seeing though. Besides the Sikidang crater there are several other craters spread around Dieng.

3. Arjuna Temple Complex

This temple complex is not as huge as Borobudur nor as magnificent as Prambanan, but for sure Arjuna temple complex is older than them both. Arjuna temple complex in Dieng was built in the 7th century. If you would like to enjoy the temple complex by yourself, better come early in the morning.

4. Tea plantation – Tambi

So much fun! If you have enough time, you can also explore the tea plantations or even the coffee plantations. Not only can you pass through the plantations, but you can also go in and explore the field.

In the Tambi tea plantation , you can join the Agrowisata tour. There will be a guide that will accompany you and explain several tea related facts to you. Afterwards, you can go to the tea factory and learn about the process for making tea leaves into the tea that you can drink.

I would like to add one more places, which is Bukit Sikunir (Sikunir hill) – You can find out about it in this article I wrote. Watching sunrise from Sikunir Hill really is quite amazing.

Food to Try

There are a lot of local delicacies that you can try when you visit Dieng. Some of the things I recommend you try include Tempe kemul, Carica and Mie Ongklok. Let me tell you a little bit about them so you can decide if you want to try them for yourself. Let’s get started.

– Tempe Kemul. Tempe (or tempeh) is fermented soya beans, which is fried (but not until crispy) with flour. I like to eat Tempe Kemul with green chilies. It’s spicy and tasty.

– Carica is a kind of fruit that (a lot of people say) can only able to found around the Dieng plateau area. Carica is a mini papaya. It taste good fresh or blended as a drink. Carica is not as sweet as papaya.

– Mie Ongklok is a noodle dish that is famous in Dieng. I am not a big fan of Mie Ongklok. I think it is too sweet, but you should give a try! A lot of people like it.

If you visit Dieng I recommend trying all of the different dishes. Tempe Kemul is a nice snack to eat with a meal and Carica makes for a really nice, though very sweet, desert.

Where to Stay in Dieng

There are not very many hotels to choose from in Dieng. Those that exist are mostly very basic and overpriced when compared to what is available in Yogyakarta. I would not recommend staying in Dieng. I think it’s more convenient to stay in Yogyakarta. However, if you choose to do so there are two areas where you can stay, Banjarnegara and Wonosobo.

Banjarnegara is located in the centre of the Dieng highlands. The range of options for accommodation in Banjarnegara is extremely limited and most suitable for backpackers. If you want to stay in Banjarnegara I would recommend:

Budget – Persik Homestay

My personal recommendation if you want to stay in Dieng is to find a hotel in the town of Wonosobo. The town of Wonosobo is not far from the centre of the Dieng Valley. While there’s not much to do in the town, there is a larger number of restaurants you can visit and a lot more choices for accommodation. My recommendations for the three best hotels in Wonosobo for every budget are as follows:

Budget – Ortegha Homestay

Budget/ Mid Range – Pondok Bamboo Sendangsari

Mid Range – Kresna Gallery Hotel

How to get to Dieng Plateau

Easy! You can either reach Dieng from Semarang or Jogjakarta. I’ve been from both placess and if I am not wrong it takes approximately 3,5 hours-ish from either city.

In this article I’ll more put focus on how to get to Dieng from Jogjakarta . Like I said earlier, Dieng is 3,5 hours from Jogjakarta. There are several options that I know to get to Dieng from Jogja, check it out and choose the one that suits you best:

I wouldn’t advise this since there is no direct bus (as far as I know) from Jogjakarta to Dieng. I read some articles that said you should change bus 3-4 times to be able to get to Dieng. The journey can take 5 hours or even 7 hours.

Taking a bus is a good option if you travel solo, would like to go cheap and you can’t drive a motorbike. From Yogya you need to go to Magelang and continue to Temanggung and last to Wonosobo (Dieng plateau area).

Rent a Motorbike

This is actually a great option IF you can speak a bit of Indonesian – go check my Indonesian language section about direction here . Renting a motorbike in Yogya is cheap. Make your phone works (buy an Indonesian sim-card, it is so cheap) so you can access Google maps and drive there.

Get a good motorbike since you’ll drive uphill quite a lot during the journey. Along the way, especially when you are about to reach Dieng, you’ll get some great scenery of tea and coffee plantations. This is really nice. Driving along the main highway though, which you do before you reach Dieng, is not a lot of fun because there are a lot of trucks on the road.

If you have the budget, do not hesitate to just rent a car with a driver. A car rental will include gasoline and an English-speaking driver. You can hire a car from Yogya for the day trip to Dieng (from Jogja).

Depends what do you want to see/explore. Is 3 hours enough for you to explore Dieng? If yes, then better stay in Yogyakarta.

I got there by bus from Magelang and it was pretty easy. Would be the same from Yogya. Catch a bus to Wonosobo and then a bus from there to Dieng. Really straightforward and takes 5 hours.

So Yogya – Magelang, Magelang – Wonosobo, Wonosobo – Dieng. Never heard bus Yogya – Wonosobo though. Thanks for the knowledge! 🙂

Hi’ thanks for the tips. I am planning to go to the Dieng Plateau in September. Thinking to bus to Magelang and was hoping that there is a bus to the plateau but can’t find any info other than renting a driver. I had thought to stay at least 1 night there but I wonder whether it’s cheaper to book the driver for a 1 day re-turn trip rather than 2 individual ones. Would you have any idea of costs?

hi im planning to travel to dieng on 22Jul2016-24Jul2016. And i am looking for homestays for two persons in the hope of catching a sunrise at Dieng Plateau. Will be deeply appreciative if you can help. Is it better to stay at Jl. Raya Dieng? or staying slightly further away (i.e. Jl Dieng, Wonosobo) and travelling by car? Thanks

I don’t have any recommendation for place to stay in Dieng. Below are places in Wonosobo. Kresna Hotel or Surya Asia Hotel or Duta Homestay is pretty ok. Please keep in mind that accommodations around Dieng (and Wonosobo) are mostly basic.

Hi Cinzia. Thanks for your kind feedback. Unfortunately I don’t have the contact details for any Italian speaking guides operating around Dieng.

I’ve visited the Dieng and I enter the forbidden caves in Telaga Warna, Semar and Sumur Cave. The caves can’t be entered by public for spiritual reasons. I paid for a jurukunci/keymaster service to take me in. The cave was actually quite interesting for someone who never been in a hole like that. The reason I wanted to enter the cave with the keymaster, because I was expecting to see something supernatural… but.. well.. nothing happened :D.

I’ve never visited the caves around Dieng. Sounds like quite an experience you had Juan, even if nothing supernatural happened in the end 😉

I spent a year in Dieng for the construction and start-up of the original geothermal generating station. I am very fond of Jawa Tenga and its people. I have travelled extensively and have never witnessed a group of harder working people.

In Magalang I bought gold for myself and ear rings for the girls who worked as servers and house keepers at our lodgings.

Wonosobo is where we went for a day off occasionally and to get our hair cut.

I really liked it there and learned to speak Bahasa Indonesia well enough so I could attend Pasar Pagi in Yokjacarta and visit with the vendors..

Dieng is a moutainous plateau located near the town of Wonosobo in Central Java. It is thought to have been one of the oldest Hindu religious complex of Java, thriving in the first half of the 8th century, under the Sanjaya dynasty of Mataram kingdom.

The name Dieng is thought to originate from Old Javanese (Kawi) di (place, mountain) and Hyang (god), so roughly meaning “Abode of Gods”. It is nowadays usually called Dataran tinggi Dieng in Indonesian.

Historians thinks that Dieng used to be dotted with dozens if not hundreds of temples, yet only few survived until these days. They were built at a time when the kingdoms of Central Java were less powerful than we they erected Borobodur and Prambanan about a century later.

As very popular destination, Dieng gets a constant flow of local tourists and it gets very crowded in the weekend. If you can, better get there on week days.

Dieng if one of the few villages in Indonesia which regularly experiences frost especially at the peak of the dry season in July and August. Frozen morning dew is a very singular sight for Indonesian and every year the cold weather of the area makes it to the national news.

Hiking Mount Prau

In my opinion, it may be the most beautiful moutain view of all Java and an easy hike. No wonder hundreds of camper get there every weekend.

There are several ways to get to the summit, all explained on the always useful Gunung Bagging . The most practical one starts directly from Dieng village. When you are at the crossroads, the wall with the word Dieng written in huge letters on it in behind you, get up the road to Wonosobo for 100m and take the road on your left. Follow it until the hiking post. Register for 10’000Rp and take the trail. It took me 1h30 to reach the true summit, but the best views over other Javanese peaks is to be found another 15m walking further.

The view in the morning is astonishing.

Mount Prau is the highest point of this moutain but you have a long and large ridge on both sides of the summit.

Those looking for calm and fresh air could easily camp away from the crowd.

Camping gear can be rented in Dieng, but if you just want to see the view, it is far from necessary to camp overnight (just wake up a bit early and climb before dawn).

Lakes, hills and craters

I will list below various spots that be visited within one day. Those are my highlights of the area.

Sikunir hill (Bukit Sikunir)

I visited once during public holiday, there were so many people coming down from the mountain after sunrise that I got stuck for 30 minutes on the hill. Better avoid weekends.

The road from Wonosobo makes a crossroad with Dieng main street at the entrance of the village. Turn left to go to Sikunir when coming from Wonosobo. The ride takes about 20-25min by motorbike, much more by car because of the traffic !

You pay 10,000Rp for entrance and 5,000Rp to park your motorbike. There is a camping ground next to the parking.

The hike to the top of Sikunir hill takes about 30min. Put on some warm clothes, it’s windy up there.

From the top of the hill you can enjoy a large view over Dieng and Mount Sindoro. Behind the hill you are overlooking Telaga Cebon.

Sikidang crater (Kawah Sikidang)

After you enjoyed the sunrise over Dieng valley from Bukit Sikunir it’s time to go down and to eat breakfast. Potatoes are highly popular in the area, probably because the climate is cold enough to grow them.

Get back to Dieng. After 15min you should see a track on the left that goes to Kawah [Crater] Sikidang.

If you have bought a ticket to Candi Arjuna, then it includes the entrance to Kawah Sikidang (15,000Rp for local/30,000Rp for foreigner). Otherwise you can buy a single entry ticket.

The crater looks like a large boiling cauldron, an interesting natural curiosity.

Local have created some attractions around the site: quad riding, photobooth with owls or snakes, souvenirs shops …

Telaga Warna & Telaga Pergilon

Near Sikidang and on the way back to Dieng you will pass by 2 lakes, but you can also see an entrance gate from the road. The two lakes are called Telaga Warna and Telaga Pergilon.

The pricing for foreigners is stupidly high (150’000Rp, 8’500Rp for locals) so you might want to skip this place even though the view from the top is quite nice. There is another trail leading to a higher viewpoint that is less expensive but I never went there.

Like in Kawah Sikidang, local set up some attractions for tourists.

Telaga Merdada

It’s a nice lake popular for fishing. After spending 15min there talking with fishermen a guy came up and told me I have to pay 5,000Rp for entrance. There is no booth but he handed me over a ticket that looked official.

If you wanna go there from Telaga Warna go back to Dieng, and follow the main road. Once you’re out of the village take the first road on your left.

At this point, it should be 2 or 3pm and I guess you would get tired after waking up at 4am.

Wandering around

Dieng Plateau has very nice landscapes to offer and amazingly nice inhabitants to discuss with.

Exploring the area on foot or motorbike without any plan is actually an excellent plan. Remember that weather is usually way better in the morning.

Other points of interest

Tourist maps are available everywhere either in your homestay or on billboards in front of each site. There are other sites to visit than the few I listed before.

One important stuff: the weather easily cloudy in the afternoon. Better wake up early and see as much as possible in the morning.

There are a few hindu temples left in Dieng. The most preserved is called Candi Arjuna.

You will probably come to Dieng from Yogyakarta where you would have visited massives temples like Borobodur and Prambanan.

Dieng’s temples are much more modest that its southern neighbours. Yet, if you appreciate history, you will probably be interested by their filiation with the more recent large temples near Yogyakarta.

Besides Kawah Sikidang, you can see two other craters : Kawah Candrimuka and Kawah Sileri. Sileri erupted in 2017. Honnestly I wasn’t really thrilled by those 2 places but I made the mistake to visit them in the afternoon so the weather was poor as well as the view. Sikidang is more impressive.

The road to Kawah Candrimuka was really bad in September 2016. Don’t go there if you don’t trust your driving skills.

Dieng Theater that you can see on tourist maps is a theater with 60 seats that casts documentary film about Dieng.

How to come to Dieng Plateau ?

The 2 closest city with an easy access are Semarang or Yogjakarta. I never been to Dieng from Semerang but I would expect to take a bus to Wonosobo and then another one to Dieng.

From Yogyakarta

From Yogjakarta take a local bus from Jombor station to Magelang (15’000Rp). You could also take a bus heading to Semarang from Bawingan station but if it’s an express ( patas ) then you will pay to full fare to Semarang even though you get off in Magelang (40’000Rp).

In Magelang you have regular buses to Wonosobo (25’000Rp).

From Wonosobo bus station, get on a yellow angkot (city minibus) and get off at Alun-Alun park (3’000Rp).

On Jl. Pemuda in front of the Great Mosque you have small buses leaving for Dieng until approximately 4PM. I paid 12’000Rp on the way up, on the way down the bus I got was more recent and the drivers asked for a little bit more (no more than 20’000Rp).

Otherwise you can book a shared taxi ( travel ) from Yogyakarta that will pick you up at your accomodation and take you to Dieng for 70’000Rp in 4 to 5 hours.

Last solution, rent a motorbike in Yogyakarta (or Semarang) and drive by yourself. Classical short-term motorbike rental in Yogya is charged in 2018 about 75’000Rp/day. The road to Dieng is not very scenic unless on the last kilometers, it takes 4 to 5 hours depending on how much trucks you have to pass.

Motorbike rental is also widely available and Dieng but the classic rate is around 150’000Rp per day. Distances are not huge and a keen hiker could visit all the sites on foot without trouble.

Accomodation in Dieng

There are tons of homestays in Dieng or Sembungan (the village located next to Bukit Sikunir). Room price ranges from 80’000 to 150’000Rp. There is no need to book in advance unless you go there on a bank holiday.

Among the Gods at Dieng Plateau

The name ‘dieng’ which literally translates as ‘abode of the Gods’ says all you need to know about this collection small ancient temples set in the  remarkable volcanic landscape of the Dieng Plateau. The misty location, sulphurous springs and colored lakes truly make this a place of natural wonder and cultural significance.  

Come here and you will be transported back to ancient times. The temples are remnants from the glorious period of the Hindu empire in Java dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. Each of the small temples is named after figures in the epic tale of the Mahabharata such as Bima, Gatotkaca, Arjuna and Srikandi. It is believed that these temples used to serve as residences of Hindu priests who would spread Hindu teachings.

The Two Colorful Lakes

The natural splendors of this location are fascinating. From lakes with green and yellow hues called Telaga Warna to the pristine waters of the reflective ‘mirror’ lake called Telaga Pengilon, the natural beauty of this spot is superb. The mirror lake is particularly impressive as it offers a perfectly reflective image of the landscape.  While, the impact of logging can be seen as many of the trees surrounding the lake have been cut down, it still remains an impressive natural phenomenon.

Once you’ve walked to the top of the Dieng plateau you will feel like you are on top of the world. It will be difficult to know just where to look as the view from the plateau takes in steaming and colorful lakes, ancient temples and lush green landscape.

How to Get There

Whether you’re coming from Jakarta, Semarang, or Surabaya, the first thing you need to do is to reach Wonosobo either by train or bus since both are convenient and available anytime. Head to Mendolo Terminal in Wonosobo and then find a public minibus transportation called Mikromini for a ride straight to Dieng Plateau. Mikromini is always available in Mendolo Terminal everyday from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM local time and the ride is just 1,5 - 2 hours away.

How to Get Around

There’s no better way to explore Dieng Plateau than on foot. However, if you’re looking for a quick method of hopping from one place to another, many locals provide motorcycle rides at affordable rates.

There are many things you can do in the Dieng Plateau. For a truly amazing spectacle, arrive at the plateau at sunrise and you will be spoiled with not one, but two amazing views of the sunrise, a ‘golden’ and a ‘silver’ sunrise. This double sunrise is a unique natural phenomenon.  Visitors take in the first ‘golden’ sunrise from a watch tower while the second ‘silver’ sunrise can be seen from the temples.

Even the drive to the plateau offers impressive sights. On the way up, visitors will pass through tobacco plantations and beautiful mountain scenery.

The Dieng people are used to visitors and warmly welcome travellers to the region.

Volcanic Craters-  Dieng plateau is known for being home to various volcanic craters, known as kawah in the local language. The most popular one to visit is the Sikidang crater, along with the Candradimuka crater and the Sileri crater. History of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.

In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.

In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.

In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.

In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.

In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.

Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century

From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.

After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.

On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.

By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.

During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.

From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.

On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.

In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.

In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.

With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.

On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. The large number of casualties is explained by the fact that at the time of the collision, most of the passengers were in the movie theater and on the dance floor on the upper deck, which was completely destroyed by the collision with the bridge girder.

On July 17, 1987, the 600,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. The city’s tourist significance declined sharply after the collapse of the USSR. In 1998, Ulyanovsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

In the 2000s, there was a discussion about the reverse renaming of the city to Simbirsk, but the residents of Ulyanovsk for the most part did not support this proposal. In 2009, the arches of the old railway bridge were replaced. On November 24, 2009, the Presidential Bridge across the Volga was opened, the second longest in Russia, with a length of about 6 kilometers.

From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.

Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.

This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).

The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.

Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.

It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.

Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.

The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.

Lenin Memorial - a whole museum complex dedicated to Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) and his family. This is one of the largest historical and museum complexes in the Volga region. The main building was constructed for the 100th anniversary of Lenin’s birth in 1970.

This is the only museum in the world that reflects the entire life of Lenin. It has more than 70 thousand exhibits including authentic belongings of the Ulyanov family, documents, photographs, and other items related to different periods of Russian history. Lenin Square, 1.

House-Museum of Vladimir Lenin . The exhibition of this museum is located on the territory of a wooden estate - a monument of urban architecture that belonged to the Ulyanov family at the end of the 19th century. Lenin spent his childhood and youth here. Lenina Street, 68.

Novy Venets Boulevard - a pedestrian street in the center of Ulyanovsk located on the highest point of the city. From here you can see the Volga, Imperial Bridge, and city districts. Museum of Local Lore named after Ivan Goncharov . This museum occupies a beautiful mansion with an elegant tower built as a monument to the great Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. The exhibition halls display archaeological artifacts and fossils. A significant part of the exposition is devoted to the life and work of Ivan Goncharov. Historical and Memorial Museum of Ivan Goncharov - a magnificent building, which is a historical and architectural sight of Ulyanovsk. In 1812, the famous Russian writer Ivan Goncharov was born in one of its rooms. The exposition occupies all three floors of the building. A separate hall is dedicated to the history of the building itself, in the remaining halls there are thematic exhibitions related to the personality of the writer and his family. There are also halls that house historical collections and a collection of merchant household items. The tower of the building houses the Museum of the History of the Simbirsk Town Clocks. Museum “Simbirsk Classical Gymnasium” . Simbirsk was one of the first Russian cities to introduce secondary education for children. The museum exposition is dedicated to the history of the development of education in the Russian Empire. It is located in a former gymnasium, where Vladimir Ulyanov and Alexander Kerensky studied at one time. Inside, the atmosphere of the 19th century has been recreated. Museum “Fire Department of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk” . The exposition of this museum is located in the 19th century building previously occupied by the town fire brigade. The museum was opened after the restoration of the building in 1979. The collection consists of pre-revolutionary and Soviet sections. Historical and architectural complex “Simbirsk Fortified Line” . At the time of the foundation of Ulyanovsk, the Simbirsk line protected the Russian land from the raids of nomads from the east. Today, you can find a unique historical and architectural museum here. It features a defensive fortress and an earthen rampart, which were restored based on historical documents and remains found by archaeologists in Simbirsk. This museum located near the airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny has an airfield and 4 halls with exhibits illustrating the history of aviation from the time of the Russian Civil War to the present day. In terms of the total number of exhibits (about 9 thousand), it is the country’s largest aviation museum. One of the unique exhibits is the Tu-144 supersonic airliner. Aviatsionnaya Street, 20a.

Balalaika Museum - a unique museum with a collection of the rarest balalaikas (a musical instrument very popular in pre-revolutionary and Soviet Russia). The guests of the museum are invited to immerse themselves in the world of village music, to hear the sound of real peasant balalaikas. Here you can also taste tea made from herbs collected in the forests of the Ulyanovsk region. Bebelya Street, 19.

Savior Ascension Cathedral - a picturesque Orthodox church of sky-blue color built in the Baroque style in the 2000s to replace the demolished Ascension Cathedral (albeit in a different place). Ulyanovskaya Street, 2.

Holy Resurrection-Germanovsky Cathedral - one of the oldest churches in Ulyanovsk built in the early 18th century. During the years of Soviet power, it was closed and used as the state archive. In 2003, the building was returned to the Orthodox diocese. Gogolya Lane, 11.

House of Merchant Bokounin - a beautiful monument of wooden architecture, one of the architectural gems of Ulyanovsk. It was erected at the beginning of the 20th century on the territory of the estate of the Ulyanovsk merchant Sergei Bokounin. Part of the premises is occupied by the restaurant “Teremok”. Radishcheva Street, 4.

The Volga River (Kuibyshev Reservoir) - the largest artificial reservoir on the Volga created in the 1950s. The reservoir is 500 km long, with a maximum width of 44 km. Its powerful water resources are used to generate electricity. Due to its gigantic size, it significantly affected the Volga itself, changed the flow regime and began the processes of coastal washout. Home to many species of fish, the reservoir attracts fishing enthusiasts to its shores.

How Victor Montalvo honors his Mexican roots in breaking journey to Paris Olympics

What makes victor montalvo an effective breaker, his teammate jeffrey louis said, is his ability to move in any position. the traditional themes with a new-school twist are apparent in his style..

In more ways than one, Victor Montalvo credits his father, Victor Bermudez, for his journey within breaking – from their home in Kissimmee, Florida, to the 2024 Paris Olympics , where breaking will make its first (and perhaps only) appearance at the Games.

Not only did Bermudez’s breaking background from his native Mexico influence his son, but Bermudez pushed Montalvo into the international breaking scene as a teenager. He wanted Montalvo to go to “The Notorious IBE,” an international dance festival in the Netherlands that is one of breaking’s biggest events. 

Montalvo was 17 and hadn’t finished high school yet. Some family members bristled at the decision. 

“My dad is like, ‘No, I'm going to get you a passport. I don't care what anyone says, you're going,’ ” Montalvo told USA TODAY Sports. “Because he saw how much passion I had for it. And I just thank him for doing that.”

Another world opened up to Montalvo. He started traveling more after that trip and receiving invites to places like France, which has a thriving breaking community, and other spots around the globe. 

“It's like, ‘All right, I'm going to pursue this.’ And I decided to leave (school),” Montalvo said.  

After the Olympics, Montalvo will receive his GED, he said, and wants to attend college.

But first, winning the first Olympic gold medal for breaking is on Montalvo’s wish list. But beyond that, showcasing hip-hop and breaking culture to the world is his priority – along with continuing to make his family proud. 

“Follow your dream,” Victor Sr. told his son, “and let's see what happens.”

Victor Montalvo following in footsteps of dad, uncle 

That’s how much Bermudez and his twin brother Hector paid to watch a tape inside of a friend’s kitchen in Puebla, Mexico, more than 40 years ago. What Bermudez saw altered the course of his family’s trajectory.   

It was a recording of an American show, Bermudez discovered years later, called “That’s Incredible.” The clip he saw featured the Floormasters battling the Dynamic Rockers, two New York City-based breaking crews from the 1980s. 

The Bermudez twins watched the video at least 10 times. They tried to copy the dance moves and started practicing on the sidewalk. Afterward, the movie “Beat Street,” which chronicled New York hip-hop culture in the early 1980s, came out. The Bermudez twins took it up a notch. 

“We kind of knew how to do windmills, backspins, things like that,” Victor Bermudez told USA TODAY Sports. “So when we started doing that, there were a lot of people … they went crazy.”

Victor Sr. and Hector were about 12 or 13 years old. Other kids in the neighborhood started breaking and a crew slowly formed. A local government worker found the group and asked if they wanted to participate in a traveling variety show that traversed the state of Puebla. Somebody played guitar, another performed comedy. The Bermudez boys and their friends breakdanced. Sometimes there were 20 people in the crowd. Other shows, they danced for 800 – one hundredth of Montalvo’s current 81,000 followers on Instagram .

“We practiced 10 hours (a day) in the concrete. All the bruises, scratches on our back,” Hector Bermudez, Montalvo’s uncle, told USA TODAY Sports.

They put down cardboard to help with that. Their crew swelled to about a dozen kids, but Victor Sr. was the best, Hector said. 

“He always was the one who would say, ‘I'm going to play the best in the world,’ ” Hector said. “But the things that we were doing back then, it wasn't like where you can watch YouTube and try to do the stuff that they were doing.” 

Victor Sr. had to wait for his son to reach the summit on his behalf. 

“We fell in love with it big time,” Hector said. “For little kids traveling from this one town to another one, it was a big thing.” 

US teammate says Victor Montalvo ‘well-rounded as a breaker’

The traveling tour ended. Breaking leaked out of hip-hop culture and decreased in popularity. At the end of 1988 and beginning of 1989, the Bermudez twins immigrated from Mexico and joined the rest of their family in the United States; their parents and siblings were in the Orlando, Florida, area. 

The Bermudez boys found another art form, death metal, and started a band called “Sarcophilus” (the scientific name for a Tasmanian Devil). During a garage jam session one day, they realized their children were watching “Beat Street” in another room. 

“I went ‘Oh, I used to do that. And my nephew, Hector Jr. was like, ‘Ah, you are lying. I don't believe you,’ ” said Victor Sr. “I say, ‘Ah, I was good at it. And they started going like, ‘Yeah, right.’

“And I went to my brother and I go, ‘They think I'm lying about being a B-boy.’ ” 

Victor Sr. dug out his old b-boy sweatshirt and a cap. They all went into the living room, moved the sofa and started doing windmills, backspins, headspins and more. 

“They were like, ‘What the hell?’ ” Victor Sr. said. 

Montalvo was about 6 years old when that happened, Victor Sr. said. A couple of years passed before Hector Jr. started taking breaking more with kids at school. Montalvo saw his older cousin trying to do windmills and became interested. 

“He didn't stop. He was (doing it) every day, every day,” Victor Sr. said. “I was like, you’re going to break the TV.” 

Kids visited the Bermudez house routinely to practice in the driveway or garage. Maria Montalvo, Victor Jr.’s mother, said they were making too much noise. But Victor Sr. was happy they were dancing instead of finding trouble. 

From there, Montalvo progressed into local competitions. Everyone could see the talent. He would practice for hours on end. In 2011, Montalvo won a competition in Tampa. He took first in another Florida-based battle and that advanced him to the national championships in Chicago. His first time competing against the best breakers in the U.S., Montalvo took second, finishing behind Alex “El Nino” Diaz. 

During this time, Montalvo was under the mentorship of b-boy David “MexOne” Alvarado, who died in 2017 at the age of 35. Before his death, though, he watched his mentee reach the top of the sport. 

“He helped me out a ton,” Montalvo said. “He instilled a lot of positive mental ideas, and he just believed in me, and that made me believe in myself.” 

Bermudez also instilled confidence in his son. His advice: have fun and be yourself. Once he started breaking like he was in the garage again, he found success in the sport that is based on a judge’s decision, much like gymnastics or figure skating. 

After Montalvo started his international career, and put his education on hiatus, success quickly followed. Montalvo won his first Red Bull BC One, the biggest one-on-one b-boy/b-girl competition in the world, in 2015. His second victory came seven years later. He took gold at last year’s world championships. 

What makes Montalvo an effective breaker, his fellow Team USA b-boy Jeffrey Louis said, is his ability to move in any position. The traditional themes with a new-school twist are apparent in his style.

“You could just throw him, and he’d land on one hand and then figure his way out,” Louis said, with a laugh. “He has total body awareness. He’s just well-rounded as a breaker.”

Victor Montalvo’s love of breaking reignited before Paris

Winning, at first, was a way to honor his family legacy. 

Once Montalvo won his first belt, the version of a trophy Red Bull awards, he knew it wasn’t staying in his possession for long. On the phone with his son, Victor Sr. offered a reminder. 

“I said, ‘Make sure you bring my belt,’ ” Victor Sr. said. “But I was kind of joking. I know it’s my belt. But he came home and he was like, ‘Oh, that is for you.’ ” 

There were a lot of tears during that euphoric phone call, too. The belt still hangs in Victor Sr.’s bedroom. 

Montalvo does not only respect the path his father and uncle paved, but what all “OGs” – the generation of breakers from the '70s, '80s and even early '90s – did for the culture. He feels fortunate that many are still alive. 

“They basically created the path that I'm on right now, that we are all on,” Montalvo said. “So it's important to learn from your past, to understand it, and then to just level it up.” 

To Bermudez, his son’s Mexican heritage is one of the reasons why he is considerate of his elders. 

“Our people, we're like that,” Bermudez said. 

When Montalvo first learned breaking, the passion wasn’t rooted in competing or the money. By 2020, the same year he bought a house for his parents, he felt he reached a plateau. 

“I just felt like I had already done it all in my breaking career,” Montalvo said. “I won the event I wanted to win, and I have won most of them numerous times.” 

The announcement that breaking would be at the 2024 Summer Olympics reignited the spark. Paris became the goal – and allowed him to reprioritize why he loved the art. 

“Just overall, becoming a better dancer in this sport, in this art, and creating my own fingerprint, creating my own moves, innovating new moves, and inspiring other younger breakers,” Montalvo said. “And now I understand that I have to bring back the ‘why’ and do it for the love.”

Montalvo gains inspiration from a variety of places – breakers he competes against, different forms of dance, other sports (he started Muay Thai training a few years ago). Even Mike Tyson. 

“I love Mike Tyson,” he said. “Just his energy and just his perseverance throughout his life.

“Creativity, for us, is the most important thing. You take the foundation, the basics, and then you add your own little flair, your own little flavor into the move to then distinguish yourself from everyone.” 

That personal style is paramount to being a b-boy or b-girl. There is an inherent vulnerability that comes with entering a battle.

“You have to be uncomfortable to then become comfortable,” Montalvo said. “You have to try new things.” 

The future of breaking at the Olympics is unknown. In the U.S., its birthplace, breaking won’t be part of the Los Angeles 2028 program. That’s disappointing, but Montalvo knows the attention the sport will receive in Paris becomes even more important. 

“It doesn’t matter what color you are, who you are, where you’re from. It’s inclusive. So anyone can do it,” Montalvo said. “That’s what I love about breaking and I want to show it to the world. 

“It’s all about peace, love, unity and having fun.” 

These Olympics will be a family affair for Montalvo. His wife, Kate, is a fellow breaker and will represent Ukraine. The Bermudez twins will be watching from home watching their dreams reach the Olympic stage. 

“The American Dream” means something different to every person. Its meaning has been twisted in every direction from ironic to xenophobic. To Victor Sr., it’s not about the money – a $50,000 car takes you to the same place as one that costs $5,000, he always told his children. It’s being in America, which he’s called home since he was 18. Having a roof over his head. Having a steady job and not worrying about food. 

“That's the thing,” Bermudez said. “The real American dream is seeing your kids, like my kids, doing good things, and that's the American dream.”
