Since they broke through into the Australian music scene more than a decade ago, Tash Sultana has been nothing less than a musical force.

The gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer and entrepreneur has carved out every step in their musical journey over the last 15 years, which has taken them from performing open night mics all over the country, busking the streets of Melbourne to releasing platinum records, accumulating billions of streams, nominations across the globe, to winning awards and selling hundreds of thousands of concert tickets worldwide.

Tash creates, composes, writes, engineers and produces everything that is heard live, and on record. Tash is the band. Their now-famous busking sessions on Melbourne’s Bourke Street catapulted them into the eyes and ears of music fans everywhere, and a viral video of their early song ‘Jungle’ brought them international attention. Since then, it’s been nothing but a meteoric rise.

Their debut album Flow State landed in 2018 and quickly became Gold certified, and spawned Platinum and Gold records with singles ‘Mystik’ and ‘Murder to the Mind’.

In 2019 alone, Tash sold more than 500,000 concert tickets globally, and over the years they’ve notched up major international appearances at festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Montreal Jazz Festival.

Acclaimed second record Terra Firma landed in 2021, and garnered widespread praise for Tash’s raw and reflective songwriting and ambitious musical arrangements. Like everything before it, the entirety of the record was carved by Tash – every instrument that was played, every bit of musical arrangement, every bit of production. But for the first time, Terra Firma saw Tash bring in a couple of close friends and collaborations to co-write – including Matt Corby, Dann Hume, Jerome Farah, and Josh Cashman.

Their extensive catalog has nearly broken the internet, having raked in billions of streams and counting.

Since Tash’s grandfather gifted a guitar at the age of three, the artist developed a love for self-teaching an array of different instruments around the guitar knowledge which they had been taught as a young kid during primary school. Quickly developing a unique style that has seen Tash breaking record attendances around the world. Tash plays over 12 instruments (guitar, bass, drums/ percussion, piano/ keyboard/ synth/ Oud, trumpet, saxophone, flutes, Pan pipes, Sitar, harmonica, beat production) with guitar as their main love, a self-trained vocal that reaches over a 7 key range and a live show that needs to be seen to be believed. The one-person powerhouse started out playing open mic nights at age 13 with the help of a fake ID. Soon to finish school with the reluctance to get a ‘real’ job, took to the streets to busk every day of the week on Melbourne’s famous Bourke St back in 2009-2015. That was the beginning of the local traction following Tash. Soon to reach a worldwide global scale in the years following to present. Recent accolades include over 1 Billion combined streams, an ARIA award for Blues and Roots Album of The Year with ‘Flow State’, smash single ‘Jungle’ coming in at #3 in triple j’s Hottest 100, achieving multi-platinum sales for the Notion EP, double platinum sales for ‘Jungle’ and platinum sales for ‘Notion’ along with numerous gold certified singles and a certified gold debut album. All self-produced, self-composed, and self-arranged. What can you say about the phenomenon that goes by the name of Tash Sultana? Born in Melbourne in 1995, they started playing guitar at the age of three. From that point they got to know all kinds of instruments (strings, horns, percussion, keyboards, and more) and began an impressive journey, first as a street artist and soon as an internet prodigy.

The home recording of “Jungle”, the song that went viral in 2016, surpassed 1 million views in five days (now up to 160 million), and catapulted Tash Sultana’s name and fame from the streets of Melbourne to the entire planet.

Their debut album, Flow State , was a huge success in Australia while at the same time they sold out some of the world’s greatest arenas (in 2019 alone they sold more than 500,000 tickets). Their second album was released in 2021 and was met with critical acclaim from audiences who have been captivated by this impressive talent and their gift for effortlessly mixing so many influences, ranging from pop music to dub/reggae, neo-soul, and R&B.

In 2023, it’s going to be another important year in their trajectory, with new music and a major tour in Europe and the UK that will also bring them to Release Athens x SNF Nostos, at the peak of a unique career that established them as one of the biggest music acts in contemporary music.

Since they broke through into the Australian music scene more than a decade ago, TASH SULTANA has been nothing less than a musical force.

The gender-fluid multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer-songwriter, engineer and entrepreneur has carved out every step in their musical journey over the last 15 years. This has taken them from performing open mics night all over Australia, busking the streets of Melbourne to releasing platinum records, accumulating billions of streams and selling hundreds of thousands of concert tickets worldwide. TASH has continued to rocket up the charts and win awards across the globe including the Rolling Stone (AU) 2023 Global Artist of the Year.

Following the news that they will be touring Europe this year, TASH SULTANA has just announced they will be headlining another series of North American shows from August to October 2023. Visiting some cities they have never performed in before as well some huge festivals, TASH SULTANA is back. "New Cities, New Dates, North America ... I'm Coming Back," TASH says. TASH recently released the first single “James Dean,” from their upcoming EP due out later this year. This will be the first time North American fans will have to see new music performed live. “James Dean” is a powerful and soulful song about self-reflection and transformation. It's a heartfelt ode to learning who your true friends are and having the courage to cut ties with those who don't add value to your life. The song is driven by a strong guitar riff and a steady beat, while TASH’s passionate vocals entice you to reflect on the relationships you have and how you can make the necessary changes to move forward in life. TASH began playing the guitar at the age of three after being gifted the instrument from their late grandfather. From there TASH began to pick up other instruments such as piano, keyboard, synth, bass, drums, percussion, beat making, sampling, beatboxing, trumpet, saxophone, flute, mandolin, oud, harmonica, lap steel and panpipes. TASH developed their own unique style of playing involving percussive and finger tapping style guitar coinciding with a vocal range stretching five octaves. TASH and their team also designed a custom loop station which took over two years to build to meet the needs of the intricate and one-of-a-kind performance style. It all began with the refusal to conform to normal society; this pushed the young artist into pubs and clubs and then eventually onto the streets of Melbourne to busk, where they harnessed crowd stopping performances on Melbourne’s famous Bourke Street. From there, a viral bedroom recording of “Jungle” in 2016 skyrocketed the artist off the street and in front of the world. TASH has since broken attendance records at sold out global arena tours, selling out the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the second time in just five minutes. In 2019 alone, Tash sold over half a million tickets across the globe. TASH’s second album, the #1 ARIA-charting Terra Firma , arrived three years after the ARIA-winning debut album Flow State . Aussie multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana will be touring extensively across North America again in 2023 to support their most recent album 'Terra Firma' . The 29-city excursion takes place in August/September making U.S. stops in San Diego, Kansas City, Chicago, Cleveland, Brooklyn, Atlanta and Houston. Canadian dates are set for Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Prior to the tour, the artist will be heading over to Europe for additional performances.

UPDATE: Tour dates have been extended into 2024 visiting additional cities like Chicago (Rose on the River), Marshfield (Levitate), Costa Mesa, Napa, Reno and Las Vegas.

Sultana released their sophomore album 'Terra Firma' on February 19th, 2021 via Lonely Lands Records. The new album follows up 2018's 'Flow State' which reached #5 on Billboard's Rock chart and won Best Blues and Roots Album at the 2018 ARIA Music Awards. The singles 'Murder to the Mind' and 'Mystik' have both been certified Gold in Australia. Natasha "Tash" Sultana (born 15th June, 1995) is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Described as a "one-person band who brings new meaning to the concept of multi-tasking", they are best known for their 2016 single "Jungle", which was voted into third place in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016. Sultana sold out their entire World tour and was added to dozens of high profile festivals including Laneway 2017. Both singles ‘Jungle’ and ’Notion’ were quick to receive high rotation on national broadcaster triple j. GMB viewers criticise Ed Balls for ‘callous’ Zarah Sultana interview

Ed Balls and MP Zarah Sultana locked horns in a fiery Good Morning Britain segment on the far-right riots, which left some viewers feeling uncomfortable.

The MP for Coventry South – who was one of the Labour MPs recently suspended by Keir Starmer for voting to scrap the two-child benefit cap – appeared on ITV morning show on Monday (5 August) for a debate with Daily Mail ’s Andrew Pierce about the extent to which Islamophobia is fuelling the abhorrent riots taking place in several cities across the UK.

As Sultana attempted to explain the importance of calling the riots “Islamophobic” and “racist”, Balls repeatedly interrupted her while also accusing her of failing to answer his questions.

In awkward scenes, Kate Garraway stepped in to seemingly defend Balls, telling a frustrated Sultana: “We have to ask you questions as well”, to which she replied: “Absolutely.”

Here, as Garraway proceeded to ask Sultana a question, Balls interjected: “And if you want to, you can answer them – it’s your call.”

Sultana replied: “I’m going to wait for Kate to finish her question if that’s alright,” following which a clearly rattled Balls, staring at Sultana, hit back: “If you want to answer the questions, you can but you don’t have to.”

Sultana remained silent as Garraway asked: “Why is it important for you to use that specific word ‘Islamophobic’? It’s been called racist, it’s been called thuggery.” Here, Balls interrupted again, stating: “They definitely said racist over the weekend.”

However, when Balls said that he is unsure whether Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, whom he is married to, have used the word “Islamophobia”, Sultana replied: “They haven’t.”

Sultana attempted to give her answer to Garraway’s question, explaining how mosques were targeted over the weekend – and here, Balls interrupted once more, stating: “But Keir Starmer has condemned that,” to which Sultana said: “I’m just finishing the question if thats OK.”

When Sultana went on to say there is a correlation between language used by politicians in the media, including Balls, to phrases used by rioters, Balls accused Sultana of “attacking” him.

“Well, you’ve moved from attacking Andrew to attacking me,” he said, to which the camera cut to Pierce who could be seen chuckling.

Viewers were unimpressed with the interview, and have branded Balls “reckless” for his repeated interruptions of the MP.

Narinder Kaur, who regularly appears on GMB debates, said: “This is unacceptable & deeply uncomfortable viewing. An entire white panel questioning a brown woman like a suspect. Ed Balls and Kate have left their homes this morning with no fear.”

X/Twitter user Thomas H wrote: “‘Ed Balls being incredibly patronising and condescending to Zarah Sultana. That just highlights the problem”, adding: “Zarah Sultana speaking the truth on GMB and the presenters didn’t want to hear it, which is part of the problem.’

Jonathan Shafi added: “Look how hyper-defensive and condescending Ed Balls is. Completely unprofessional, and callous, given the context,” while others accused the show of “dogpiling” Sultana.

Many suggested Balls should not have interviewed Sultana considering he is married to Cooper, questioning whether he was able to remain “unbiased”.
