Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

diana

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

Explore the ancient capital of Athens

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighborhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Visit the ancient Olympic site in Olympia

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

Dine 'Meze Style' in Psyri, Athens

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighborhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

Visit Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

Our top 5 things to do in Greece

Food and history form the basis of Greek culture and play a big role in all our trips to Greece. With Trafalgar, we'll showcase the best this country has to offer from sun up to dreamy sundown.

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

Remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Athens War Museum

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honor of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

Best museums in Greece

Though often visited for Greece island hopping, the enchantment of this Mediterranean jewel extends beyond the sapphire waters. With Trafalgar, you’ll venture under the layers of Greek culture by visiting its many fascinating museums.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavoring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

Kolokythokeftedes

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Best food in Greece

From an array of antipasto dips like taramasalata and tzatziki, to heavier main courses of grilled meats and fresh fish, Greek cuisine is internationally recognized for its deliciousness. Trafalgar will take you to the heart of Greece’s culinary traditions, each mouthful and mealtime an utter treat.

What to pack for Greece

People packing for a tour

Long, breathable pants or skirts

Often warm all year around, and extremely hot during summer, long, light clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing in Greece – particularly when visiting historic religious sites that require modest attire.

A stainless steel water bottle

Whether you’re basking ocean-side beneath the hot sun or trekking the ancient monuments of this distinct country, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Stainless steel bottles keep your water cold for eight hours while treading lightly on the environment.

Walking shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must when you’re out from morning to night. Choose sturdy, open-toe walking sandals or closed toe sneakers to ensure you can walk effortlessly for hours.

A wide-lens camera

From coasts spanning miles of sea to some of the world’s most spectacular ruins, Greece is bursting with scenes you will want to remember forever. A wide-lens camera will make it easier to capture the views.

Sun protection

Whether it’s SPF50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat or long-sleeved clothing, some form of sun protection is crucial when visiting this popular summer vacation spot.

Greece - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A holiday in Greece includes visit to ancient ruins, white sandy beaches and taste of delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

With ancient ruins, white sandy beaches and delicious Mediterranean cuisine, Greece is a tourist hotspot for history buffs, vacationers and foodies alike. The mainland cities of Athens and Delphi are well-known for their ancient temples and other landmarks, while the islands of Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes are frequented by honeymooners, partiers, and even celebrities. With a country so diverse, it’s hard to know where to start - and you’ll likely never want to leave.

Tour Highlights

  • Reflect on Greece’s vast history as you wander around the ruins of the Acropolis of Athens.
  • Find peace and harmony at the mountain-top monasteries of Metéora.
  • Swim in the turquoise waters of the Blue Caves in Zakynthos.
  • Discover the ruins of Rhodes, including the Colossus and the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights.
  • Dig your toes into the volcanic red sand at Santorini’s Red Beach.
  • Set sail in the Mediterranean Sea and go island hopping.

Travel Tips

  • July and August are very hot months in Greece, so be sure to bring sunscreen, light clothing, and plenty of water. Avoid these months if you can’t stand the heat, or if you dislike crowds and high prices.
  • Greeks are extremely friendly and can be very open and affectionate. Public displays of affection (PDAs) are common and try not to be offended if a local asks you personal questions.
  • Get ready to eat like a god or goddess. Greece is known for its cuisine, mostly made up of grilled meat and veggies. Cheese is also a huge part of Greek culture. Don’t miss souvlaki, gyro and saganaki.
  • Don’t worry if you get caught up in exploring, as restaurants are generally open late. In fact, restaurants may be empty if you arrive before 9 pm as dinner time for the locals can be as late as 10 pm.
  • Punctuality is not necessarily a value in Greece. Service can be slow and transportation delayed - so sit back, relax and embrace the Greek way of life.

Greece has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Greece before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Greece, do check out our Greece Travel Guide for more information.

2024 election updates: Vance tells Harris to 'go to hell'

V ice President Kamala Harris continues her bus tour through Georgia, an indication that the campaign hopes to keep the state in play after President Joe Biden flipped it in 2020. Her running mate Tim Walz will travel to North Carolina.

JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate, is stumping in Boston while Trump will deliver remarks on the economy in battleground Michigan. Later Thursday, Trump will participate in a town hall in Wisconsin.

Harris continues georgia bus tour, walz heads to north carolina.

Harris is continuing her tour with two stops at local businesses in Chatham County in Georgia. She will be joined by Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams.

Later Thursday, Harris will deliver remarks at a rally in Savannah.

Her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, will head to North Carolina for a "local political event" and a campaign reception.

Harris, Walz make campaign stop at Georgia high school

Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz stopped by Liberty County High School in Georgia as part of their bus tour and were greeted by the school’s principal and superintendent and met with the school marching band during rehearsal.

Harris and Walz delivered brief remarks to band members, football players and faculty. After welcoming the class to the "role model club," Harris told the class that as "leaders" the nation is "counting" on them.

" You are showing what hard work can achieve, what discipline, what teamwork. And that's the stuff of greatness," she said.

She continued with a music metaphor that encouraged them to keep up their hard work.

"I will tell you I was in band when I was your age," she said. "And all that you all are doing, it requires a whole lot of rehearsal, a whole lot of practice, long hours, right? Sometimes you hit the note, sometimes you don't, right? All that practice makes for beautiful music."

Harris spokesman defends joint interview

A spokesman for the Harris-Walz campaign defended Wednesday the decision to make the vice president's first televised interview as the Democratic presidential nominee a joint interview with her running mate Gov. Tim Walz.

Ian Sams responded on X to a post by journalist Mark Knoller who questioned if CNN should have "insisted on a one-on-one interview," by saying that "The joint ticket interview is an election year summer tradition going back 20 years."

"Kerry/Edwards, Obama/Biden, Romney/Ryan, Trump/Pence, Clinton/Kaine, Biden/Harris all did them. Almost always right around the conventions. Harris/Walz join this rich tradition on CNN tomorrow," he said.

Vance claims he doesn't need to prepare for a debate

Vance told reporters he’s preparing for the October vice presidential debate by talking to people on the campaign trail, contending he doesn’t need other preparation against Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

“Look, the way I'm doing debate prep is by spending time with these fine people. This is how I do debate prep is to get out there. You get out there, you talk to people, you talk about the issues that matter,” Vance said.

“We don't need to prepare for a debate with Tim Walz. We need to get out there and talk. We need to get out there. Look, we need to get out there and talk to the American people. That's the biggest way that we're going to prepare for that debate on October the first,” he added.

Vance says Harris 'can go to hell' for criticizing Trump for Arlington Cemetery visit

Sen. JD Vance continued to defend Trump's visit to Arlington Cemetery during a campaign event Wednesday in Erie, Pennsylvania, and went on the attack against Harris, blaming her for the deaths of 13 soldiers three years ago.

"Look, sometimes mistakes happen. That's just the nature of government, the nature of military service. But to have those 13 Americans lose their lives and not fire a single person is disgraceful. Kamala Harris is disgraceful," Vance said.

"We're gonna talk about a story out of those 13 brave innocent Americans who lost their lives, it's that Kamala Harris is so asleep at the wheel that she won't even do an investigation into what happened, and she wants to yell at Donald Trump because he showed up. She can, go to hell," he continued.

The federal government conducted a probe into the final days of the war and American withdrawal and the Pentagon's Central Command concluded in 2022 that the attack was not preventable despite others' assertions that it was preventable.

The Pentagon has conducted multiple rounds of reviews, including the latest review published in April that reaffirmed the initial investigation's findings that the attack was not preventable.

Congress has also scrutinized the attack and heard from many military leaders, including former Marine Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews, who told lawmakers last year that he was thwarted in an attempt to stop the suicide bombing.

Harris, who was campaigning in Georgia Wednesday, did not bring up "incident" at Arlington National Cemetery. Harris-Walz communications director Michael Tyler told CNN on Wednesday that the "incident" at Arlington National Cemetery with former President Trump was "pretty sad," but what "we've come to expect" from the former president.

Biden to travel to Wisconsin next week to tout economy

Walz promises to fight for labor freedoms at International Association of Fire Fighters

Gov. Tim Walz addressed the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) convention on Wednesday in Boston, making the case that the Democratic ticket was the one that would fight for their freedoms, including labor protections.

“People tell me, look, I'm really not that into politics. My response to that is, too damn bad -- politics is into you,” Walz said to what he acknowledged as a bipartisan audience.

Walz said that Harris “is proudly part of the most pro-labor administration in history,” and that when they “win this election, we'll have your back like you've had ours.”

“We believe that you, not politicians, should be made free to make your own health care choices,” Walz concluded. “We believe that workers deserve to collectively bargain for fair wages and safe working conditions.”

Harris-Walz campaign responds to superseding indictment

Quentin Fulks, the Harris-Walz campaign’s principal deputy campaign manager, reacted to the news of the superseding indictment against Donald Trump Tuesday afternoon on MSNBC and avoided remarking on "ongoing legal cases" but characterized Trump as a danger.

"They saw it with their own eyes, and so we're going to continue to take the fight directly to Donald Trump on the issues that matter. But American voters aren't stupid. They know who Donald Trump is, and they know what he will do if he gets more time in the White House," Fulks told MSNBC.

JD Vance responds to new special counsel indictment

Sen. JD Vance, asked by ABC News on the tarmac in Nashville about the superseding indictment in former President Donald Trump's federal election interference case, and the GOP vice presidential candidate framed the special counsel's actions as an effort to influence the election.

“I haven't read the whole thing, but it looks like Jack Smith doing more of what he does, which is filing these absurd lawsuits in an effort to influence the election," he said.

The new indictment adjusts the charges to the Supreme Court's immunity ruling.

Vance pushed back against the Harris-Walz campaign's assertion that the Supreme Court ruling goes too far and grants the former president too much immunity, arguing that the president needs some immunity in order to do the job.

"If the president doesn't have some level of immunity in how he conducts his office, in the same way that judges have to have immunity, police officers have to have immunity. There has to be some recognition that people can't be sued for doing their job," Vance said.

National News | Kamala Harris’ bus tour pauses in Georgia after member of motorcade crashes

The incident unfolded Wednesday night on Interstate 516 in Savannah, WJCL reported.

According to local authorities, Corporal David Bates lost control of his motorcycle and wiped out around 7:20 p.m.  He was rushed in critical condition to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he continued to recover on Thursday, police said. He has since been labeled in stable condition.

A photo from the scene shows a pair of police officers huddled over the injured motorcyclist as his blood pooled in the street.

Bates did not hit anyone or anything else. Police said he was the only person injured in the crash.

“The Savannah Police Department is supporting Corporal Bates and his family as he begins his recovery from injuries sustained in this vehicle accident,” Chief Lenny Gunther told the news station. “We will be by his side every step of the way.”

The Secret Service on Thursday said it was “aware of an incident that occurred during a motorcade movement yesterday.”

Members of the press following Harris told TMZ the bus stopped for a few minutes before continuing onward.

“The movement was not affected by the incident,” said Frederick Houston, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office. “We are thankful for the support of our law enforcement partners and wish Corporal David Bates a full and speedy recovery.”

It’s not clear what exactly caused Bates to crash at this time.

Prior to the incident, Harris and Walz made a campaign stop at Sandfly BBQ , where they chatted with patrons and sampled some food.

“This is not a political post, restaurants don’t vote,” Sandfly BBQ wrote alongside a series of photos on Instagram, all of which feature a beaming Harris. “But it’s not everyday the Vice President of the United States comes into your business.”

Special counsel starts push to pursue Trump prosecutions

Smith asked for more time to process the Supreme Court ruling that found Trump was immune to most federal charges, and Judge Tanya S. Chutkan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia set Friday’s filing deadline.

Barbara McQuade, a former federal prosecutor and law professor at University of Michigan, said the next two weeks in the Washington case will set the stage for how the historic prosecution of a former president will play out.

Chutkan will consider the future of the case with the justices already looking over her shoulder. The majority opinion by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. already proclaimed parts of the original case to be off limits, including allegations about Trump’s effort to enlist Justice Department officials to spread false information about the 2020 election.

McQuade said the coming filing and court hearing could determine whether Smith may try and trim down the case to what can survive following the Supreme Court’s immunity decision.

And McQuade said there are open questions about what portion of the case could survive — for instance whether Trump could still face prosecution for his alleged encouragement of Vice President Mike Pence to reject electors from states he lost, or that he communicated with co-conspirators and with state legislators and election officials in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin regarding those states’ certification of electors.

McQuade said that although the Justice Department has a policy against pursuing major investigative steps during an election season, it’s now on Chutkan to dictate the court schedule.

“So it is likely that this will be in the public square during election season. But that’s not the fault of the prosecution. They filed this indictment, what, two years ago now,” McQuade said.

Explaining Claims About Tim Walz’s Military Service

Four veterans who investigate claims of fraudulent military service said they do not believe the governor is guilty of “stolen valor,” but that he did misrepresent his record at times.

Gov. Tim Walz speaking at a lectern at a rally wearing a dark suit and a red tie.

By Linda Qiu

Reporting from Washington

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has faced fresh scrutiny over his military service, and how he has characterized his record, in the weeks since he was selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

The attacks, spearheaded by his rival for the vice presidency who himself is a veteran, JD Vance, have dogged him since he first ran for Congress nearly two decades ago. Mr. Walz has forcefully defended his time in the Army National Guard.

“I am damn proud of my service to this country,” Mr. Walz said this month . “And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record.”

Some details of Mr. Walz’s service are still unknown, and other facts may remain unverifiable. Here’s what we know.

What Was Said

“What bothers me about Tim Walz is the stolen valor garbage. Do not pretend to be something that you’re not.” — Mr. Vance at a rally in Michigan in August

“How dare @GovTimWalz claim he went to war when he did not. While I am not a combat veteran, I did not dodge service. He’s a coward. This is grossly misleading and, by definition, illegal. Walz never deployed and is falsely claiming he did. This is stolen valor.” — Representative Anna Paulina Luna, Republican of Florida, on social media in August

The Trump campaign and other critics have cited a few comments Mr. Walz has made as evidence that he has lied about having served in combat.

The Stolen Valor Act makes it a federal crime to falsely claim to have received a military valor award for financial gain or for other benefits. There is no evidence that Mr. Walz has violated that law.

But colloquially, the term lacks a uniform definition, with veterans and members of the military community differing over what constitutes “stolen valor” in general and whether Mr. Walz has crossed that line in particular.

The New York Times interviewed four veterans who specialize in investigating cases of deception about service and who have collectively documented thousands of cases of stolen valor throughout decades of research.

All four said that they do not believe Mr. Walz engaged in stolen valor, but that he did misrepresent his record at times or, at the very least, has not always been precise. In comparison, the investigators gave actual examples of stolen valor, such as politicians repeatedly and falsely claiming to have served in wars they had not or earning medals they had not .

Doug Sterner, a military historian widely considered to be a leading researcher of military service claims and who helped draft the Stolen Valor Act , called the criticisms of Mr. Walz “politically motivated” and unfair, though he agreed that Mr. Walz had misrepresented elements of his service.

Anthony Anderson, a retired Army sergeant who runs the website Guardian of Valor , which chronicles false claims of military service or awards, noted that Mr. Walz’s story “is something I wouldn’t even put on my website.” Given that Mr. Walz has misspoken and fails to correct the record at times, there is reason to believe that “he is definitely embellishing his record to gain points with the voters,” Mr. Anderson said.

But he added, “I wouldn’t consider that stolen valor.”

Here is a rundown of Mr. Walz’s references to his service.

A comment about being “in war”

The clearest example of embellishment was a remark Mr. Walz made in 2018 saying that he had “carried a weapon of war in war.”

Mr. Walz has not been in war, and the Harris campaign has said that he misspoke .

Throughout his political career, Mr. Walz has usually said he was “in support” of Operation Enduring Freedom when describing his service. That is the official name for the combat mission in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 and ended December 2014.

Mr. Walz’s unit — the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery of the Minnesota Army National Guard — was deployed in 2003 in support of the operation , though he was stationed in Italy, not Afghanistan or the Middle East. (This was not atypical: Of the 45,000 military personnel assigned to the combat mission that fall, less than a third, or about 10,000, were actually stationed in Afghanistan. )

During Mr. Walz’s first congressional race in 2006, a resident wrote to a local newspaper accusing Mr. Walz of misleading voters through “artful omission” and wrongly implying he had served in combat. Mr. Walz strongly objected, writing to the same newspaper that his campaign website clearly stated that he had served overseas “in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.”

After his election to the House of Representatives, Mr. Walz continued to specify that he served “in support” of that combat mission.

Some have noted that Mr. Walz has not corrected others when they have referred to him as an “Afghanistan veteran,” a term that may more directly imply being stationed there. For example, on a television program in 2016 , the host characterized Mr. Walz as a veteran who had served in “Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan,” to which Mr. Walz nodded.

A campaign sign

Allies of Mr. Trump have also pointed to a sign that Mr. Walz held in 2004, while campaigning for John Kerry, the Democratic candidate for president, that appeared to read, “Enduring Freedom Veterans for Kerry.” A news release issued by Mr. Walz’s 2006 congressional campaign also identified him as an “Operation Enduring Freedom veteran.”

So Mr. Walz’s sign was not inaccurate. But whether the term “Enduring Freedom veteran” implies being physically present in Afghanistan is open to interpretation.

For example, to be eligible for a license plate bearing those words, residents of Kansas must furnish proof that they received an Afghanistan campaign medal, indicating service in the country, while those in Virginia need only the words “Operation Enduring Freedom” printed on official paperwork.

A Green Beret hat

Additionally, critics have cited Mr. Walz repeatedly wearing a baseball cap of a regiment he did not belong to. The cap bearing the insignia of the 1st Special Forces Group was a gift to Mr. Walz during a 2008 congressional visit to Afghanistan , the Harris campaign said.

The Times found no evidence that Mr. Walz has claimed to be a member of the Special Forces. Neither has Kevin Knapp, a retired Special Forces major who operates Guardians of the Green Beret , a website that looks at claims about serving in the Special Forces.

Mr. Knapp said that while he questioned Mr. Walz’s decision to continue wearing the gift and that he personally would never wear insignia that he did not earn, he considered the cap a “nonissue” and not an example of stolen valor.

“A lot of people we get contacted about, there’s photographic evidence, tattoos or conversations of ‘I was a Green Beret and I was behind the lines and I did all of this,’ and they never did,” Mr. Knapp said, adding that a trail of misrepresentation did not exist in Mr. Walz’s case.

“Tim Walz claimed to be a command sergeant major, even had it printed on his challenge coins, and he knew he never achieved that rank.” — Mr. Vance in a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in August

Mr. Walz repeatedly referred to himself as a retired command sergeant major — the highest rank possible for enlisted soldiers — throughout his political career.

While he served at that rank in the last weeks of his National Guard service, Mr. Walz was reverted to one rank lower, master sergeant, as he did not complete coursework required. In other words, he served as command sergeant major, but retired as a master sergeant.

The Minnesota National Guard said that Mr. Walz was promoted to sergeant major on Sept. 17, 2004, and was appointed command sergeant major on April 1, 2005. He retired on May 16, 2005, but was “administratively reduced” to master sergeant a day earlier.

It is not clear when Mr. Walz was officially informed of this change, the spokeswoman said. But paperwork obtained by Mr. Anderson of Guardian of Valor suggested that his rank was corrected in September 2005, after he had retired.

Regardless, Mr. Walz continued to refer to himself as a “command sergeant major,” including in his 2018 campaign for governor and on the Harris campaign website. The campaign has since updated the website to note that he “served,” not “retired,” at that rank. Mr. Walz had also issued a congressional coin bearing the insignia of a command sergeant major.

Most stolen valor investigators reached by The Times said Mr. Walz’s repeated citations of a higher rank were perhaps the most pernicious of his past remarks.

“That was a choice, an intentional choice that was not a misspoken comment in the excitement of the moment,” Mr. Knapp said.

Jeff, a retired Navy corpsman who researches for the website Military Phonies and asked to be identified only by his first name for fear of retribution, said the “retired command sergeant major” references especially stands out because service members are typically aware of the requirements to attain a rank. Mr. Walz, he added, chose to not complete his coursework.

While Mr. Sterner agreed that Mr. Walz had been inaccurate in describing his rank, he suggested that aspects of service, including rank and recognition, can shift after service. He noted he knew of at least a dozen veterans who continued to wear the Silver Star or Distinguished Service Cross decades after their awards were upgraded to the Medal of Honor, adding, “Are you going to go after them?”

Mr. Sterner likened Mr. Walz to “a fisherman that caught a 21-pound fish that everybody said, ‘No, it was 20 pounds.’ Maybe it lost a pound between the time he caught it and when he got to the weigh station.”

“You abandoned your unit right before they went to Iraq.” — Mr. Vance at the Michigan rally

“Tim Walz TURNED HIS BACK on the soldiers in his unit because he was TOO afraid to deploy to Iraq!!” — Representative Ronny L. Jackson, Republican of Texas, in a social media post in August

This claim stems from criticisms over when Mr. Walz decided to retire from the National Guard .

Mr. Walz served for 24 years, past the 20 years of service required for retirement. ( Only 10 percent of enlisted service members retire ; the vast majority discharge from the military before 20 years.)

He enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard in April 1981 as an infantryman just days after his 17th birthday, and transferred to the Minnesota Army National Guard in August 1996 with the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, according to the Minnesota Guard.

Mr. Walz filed paperwork declaring his intent to run for a seat in the House of Representatives in February 2005. In March 2005, his campaign released a statement noting that the National Guard had announced “a possible partial mobilization of 2,000 troops” from Minnesota and that it would require all or part of Mr. Walz’s battalion to deploy to Iraq within the next two years. Mr. Walz said he would stay in the race and serve if called upon.

Mr. Walz retired officially on May 16, 2005. It is unknown when he submitted his retirement paperwork, the Minnesota National Guard said, noting that the process varies but approval can take 30 to 120 days.

The unit received an alert order for mobilization to Iraq on July 14, 2005, the Minnesota National Guard said. But it did not receive an official Pentagon mobilization order until August 2005. It mobilized in October 2005 and deployed to Iraq in March 2006.

Members of his battalion previously told The Times that rumors of a possible deployment had begun circulating as Mr. Walz considered a run for Congress. Jack Cook, who served in the unit after Mr. Walz retired, said in a separate interview that senior members of the command staff knew of potential missions and deployments long before the actual unit notifications went out.

Ultimately, whether Mr. Walz submitted his retirement paperwork before the possible deployment announcement is unclear. But he retired after the announcement of a possible deployment, and before an unofficial alert was issued and an official order was received.
