Born in Middlesex, UK, Billy Idol was a child of punk, first fronting the band Generation X before becoming a worldwide, MTV-generation star in the 80s.

After packing in the English degree he was working towards at Sussex university, in 1976 Billy joined up with The Bromley Contingent, a group of Sex Pistols fans who went on to have an impact of their own after it formed Siouxsie and the Banshees and Generation X.

Billy became the lead singer of Generation X and made no attempt to hide the fact that they were going to do things a bit differently from other punk acts. Whilst peers such The Clash and The Sex Pistols wrote off the 60s pop of acts like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Generation X embraced it as their primary influence. This pop influence allowed them to become the first punk act to be featured on Top of The Pops and the band released 3 albums before disbanding.

This freed up Billy to pack his bags, head to New York City and pursue a solo career. Fusing his punk image with a hint of glam, Billy soon began to pump out the hits with songs like ‘White Wedding’ becoming an MTV staple. Billy unintentionally found himself becoming a part of the ‘Second British Invasion of the United States’, a period where numerous British acts found great success overseas fueled by the relatively new platform of MTV.

With the release of his next album ‘Rebel Yell’, Billy’s transformation into international super star was complete. Today he still plays sold out arenas globally and is a testament to what a young punk from Middlesex can achieve.

Live reviews

Just from the image of Billy Idol you can expect that you are going to see a highly energetic performance when you attend one of his concerts. Billy Idol is one of a few musicians who can step on stage and immediately captivate the audience by his presence. His signature bleached spiked hair, his black leather jacket, and his macho like attitude are all important in creating the atmosphere for his performance. Although his appearance is highly engrossing, his music is what wins the audience’s hearts. Billy Idol has a highly dynamic style of performance. One moment he will take the role of a crooner, gently singing emotive songs such as “Eyes Without a Face”, and the next moment he will tear off his shirt and run fiercely around stage belting out the lyrics to the rock anthem, “Rebel Yell”. Billy Idol is backed by a very talented band consisting of guitarist Steve Stevens, who has been touring with Billy Idol since 1981. Steve Stevens is a well-versed guitar player having performed with many talented musicians including Michael Jackson, when he provided guitar for his album, Bad. Billy Idol’s music is also very interesting due to his use of synthesizers in his music. The synths provide a unique atmospheric sound that is often uncommon in hard-rock music. The whole band is very energetic when performing, especially Billy Idol who is constantly inciting the crowd to act wild and join in chanting his songs.

His setlist is sure to please the crowd with him performing most of his hits including “White Wedding” and “Love and Glory”. He will please diehard fans as well by playing older songs from his days in the band, Generation X. Billy Idol has proven to be a suitable name for him, as he is surely regarded as an idol of rock and roll performances.

Your Sydney show was absolutely breathtaking, you smashed it vocally, you still have incredible sex appeal, Steve was better than ever as was your band, your drummer worked his arms off. It was the best day so far of 2020 for me as I did the trip from the South Coast where I'm a wildlife carer for 18 years, taking a day off from filling up food and water stations at a wildlife sanctuary that was completely destroyed, while still doing search and rescue in the National Park which is still closed it was a nice change. You look incredible for 64 years of age, I wish I could have got a meet and greet package, as I have a beautiful wombat keyring that I wanted to give to you. I am halfway through your book, I don't want to put it down but have to attend rescues and wildlife. I follow your tours on Youtube and I kind of new what to expect, but I was wrong, it was better than Youtube, the connection with your fans was mesmerizing, I first saw you in 1984? at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and you are as good now as you were then, only you have much more new songs. Your tribute to your father was very touching and I'd like to thank you for sharing that with your fans, I love all your albums, Kings and Queens is just my favourite, but then so is Devils Playground, and Whiplash Smile, and Charmed Life.. well all of them really, but your music gets better and better with age, I can't wait till your next album. Keep on Rocking Billy Fucking Idol... Legend.. Kind or Rock and Roll... Your number 1 Fan.. Georgia Gowanloch (Australia)

I've got a ticket the night before the show uncertain if I should go.

Luckily there was tickets left because I didn't want to miss this one, that I know now.

Billy Idol's latest is not my kind of music. Doesn't feel Billy Idol in my mind. It got some good songs but misses the punch.

The show on the other hand. What a punch!

A glorious performance by the whole band.

Good mix of old classics and new ones.

Billy took good care of the audience and showed what an excellent live artist he is.

The songs had a mix of tempo, from quite calm acoustic like too my favourite speed metal tempo. That was a real surprise. Don't think the rest of audience appreciate that thou, but it showed the broad repertoire of Billy Idol songs.

They throw in a long guitar solo, reminded me of mariachi, kind of mexican style guitar play. I loved it. Some may say it was too long but the rest of the band went backstage during that time so I guess they needed the break.

I didn't mind, great work and lovely done.

So even if you are no fan of his latest work. Go see him live. He shines!

Billy Idol live is one of my top three konserts.

So if you get the chance, enlighten your life with the performance of Billy Idol and the band.

I've been in love billy with idol since I first saw the "White Wedding" video back in the day on mtv, and since then I've been hooked! I was blown away by his unique style and in your face personality. He is the epitome of 80's new wave punk rock music with such classics as rebel yell, "white wedding", and "dancing with myself".His bouncy and melodic sounds can't help but make u wanna sing and dance along to them. He continues to produce music and go on tour to this day but he has yet to recapture the notoriety he did in the 80's. But due to the reinfusion of punk rock in the 2000's He has managed to gain some fresh attention and reach a younger audience. In 2005 he released a new album called "Devil's Playground" and it made it to #46 on the billboard 200 chart. He's even made guest appearances in movies such as "the Wedding Singer" and "Highlander: Endgame". To this day his songs continue to get a lot of play appearing in games like Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band. He will for ever be the only Idol I worship ;)

I've seen Billy in concert more times than I can count over the past decades and he is only getting better with age! Billy Idol came onstage full of energy, with his fist pumping, lip snaring and voice bellowing. He engaged the audience from right to left, dancing and changing his shirts numerous times (even tossing one out to the crowd)!

Steve Stevens wowed the crowd with several guitar solos played in between songs. He teased the audience with the opening to Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. Later, He and Billy did a duet at the beginning of "White Wedding" before the rest of the band came on stage and joined in.

The band played all the hits including: Mony, Mony, Rebel Yell, Dancing With Myself, Eyes Without a Face, Cradle of Love, Sweet 16, blue Highway, and Ready, Steady, Go. They also performed songs from the latest album, Kings and Queens of the Underground. It was an exceptional night!

Whatever has taken over Billy Idol is damn good!!

Having seen the band a few years previously I had enjoyed the gig but compared to the gig I saw this evening you would believe it was a totally different band. From the moment Mr Idol hit the stage he had the crowd totally in his hands, whether classic hits or new tracks from his excellent new album the momentum just did not stop.

His sheer enthusiasm spilled off the stage and grabbed you a speeding train and every song was met by deafening applause upon ending. Of course having superb guitarist and showman Steve Stevens at his side along with Billy Morrison on rhythm and vocals and a killer bass and drum section helps massively to drive this locomotive.

My advice, don't miss them if they hit your town, you will be guaranteed a fantastic treat delivered by a true artist.

truly extraordinary concert with Idol really fit, very warm even with the public that the contrary has proved rather detached. Leaving aside the punk, Idol was completely dedicated to rock and rock'n'roll never go down a level. Steve Stevens single, currently among the 5 best guitarists in the world has been satisfied in some parts of flamenco, his specialty. The whole band is really good and up to the task. Billy seems reborn, physically perfect as always but more charismatic of previous concerts in Italy. Good acoustic of the room, with light effects well studied. Maybe a little small the stage but probably there would be a larger one. To see .......

Everything was amazing! From valet parking, to easy wait to get in, all employees were professional and Billy exceeded expectations! Looks and sounds better in person! My 17 year old son had the best time also, even met some great people who are now friends! Waited less than 5 minutes for our car and on the road back to Columbus with less than 10 mins of traffic as we left. Grateful for all the folks who clean the floors, served us to Billy and his road crew make it all happen on stage! Takes a lot of people and they all did their part! Safe travels and if you can, Billy is a not miss concert! Thanks Billy for doing it like it is the first time!

This is my second time seeing Billy Idol at the same venue. The show was good but much shorter this time around. It lasted just under 90 minutes with no encore

I was only disappointed with the length of time the show went on for, but I guess that's what you get with a casino.

First time I sat up front this time in the upper level.

Steve Stevens was as good as ever and I would say even better this time around.

Over all I would say the show was great but could have added more value to the ticket cost if it had lasted another 30 mibutes.

Catch Billy at a vebue with no time limits on the artist and you will enjoy yourself.

Another fantastic performance from Billy Idol, Steve Stevens and the boys, full of energy, great playing and fab tunes. Unreserved seating upstairs at the O2 Brixton leaves a bit to be desired, even if only 7 or 8 rows back there are lots of restrictive views due to positioning of cameramen, railings and audience who think it’s ok to jump up and down in front of you despite there being no standing allowed. Appreciate everyone wants to jump around and dance to Billy but would have preferred to take my chances on floor standing and jumped around with them but still loved the gig. Preferred seeing him at Hammersmith.

Which Music Festival's Returning? Billy Idol, T-Pain, and Big Thief to Headline.

By Matthew Trueherz March 5, 2024

billy idol tour texas

At the peak of summer in 2017,  Lizzo, Iggy Pop, and Beck rocked Portland’s South Waterfront Park during the fourth year of the annual music festival Project Pabst. Nothing suggested that this state of affairs wouldn’t continue; it sold out every year. But after Beck’s closing set—which included a very long and mostly unsuccessful attempt at turning the crowd into a choir—Project Pabst disappeared into the night.

Now, seven years on, Billy Idol, T-Pain, and Big Thief are billed to resurrect it. The two-day, 21-and-over festival will return to South Waterfront Park July 27 and 28, hosting 18 bands on two stages. Local food vendors, plenty of “Pabst! Blue! Ribbon!” (Dennis Hopper’s beer of choice in Blue Velvet ), and the specifically 22-foot-tall unicorn that debuted at the inaugural festival in 2014 are promised. Tickets go on presale Friday , March 8.

Matt Slessler, “the guy who invented PBR’s hipster cred” ( our words , he’s officially a PBR executive), describes Saturday’s lineup this year as “a little more retro,” nodding to the triple threat of Billy Idol, T-Pain, and the Violent Femmes. Sunday skews slightly contemporary, with indie rockers Big Thief and rapper Denzel Curry topping the bill.

Portland bands are also peppered across both days, exceptionally nostalgic ones at that, like electro-pop aughts stars Strfkr and Gossip, Beth Ditto’s band that’s about to release its first album in over a decade.

So the festival is back, but where did it go? Project Pabst had expanded quickly to Atlanta, Denver, and Philadelphia by 2017. “We really stretched ourselves,” Slessler says. “At the end of the day, we sell beer, you know? We don’t throw music festivals.” So they shut it down, COVID hit, and the better part of a decade passed.

Slessler says the idea to revive Project Pabst has been “bubbling under the surface for years.” The timing finally felt right this year, the city said go for it, and before they knew it Billy Idol was on the phone and they were once again commissioning a fresh 22-foot-tall unicorn. This time around, they’re sticking to Portland.

Tickets  go on presale Friday , March 8 at 10am ($99 per day, $115 if purchased later). The festival itself is Saturday and Sunday July 27 and 28 at South Waterfront Park.

Billy Idol Performs “Rebel Yell” from the Top of the Empire State Building: Watch

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Billy Idol Performs “Rebel Yell” from the Top of the Empire State Building: Watch appeared first on Consequence .

Billy Idol and his guitarist Steve Stevens performed an acoustic version of Idol’s iconic hit “Rebel Yell” while tethered to a balcony atop the Empire State Building.

After playing the first-ever concert at the Hoover Dam last year, Idol went a step further — and much higher — by strapping himself to a narrow balcony on the 103rd floor of the Empire State Building to play the acoustic number. The platform was originally built as a disembarkation deck for passengers of airships tethered to the Empire State’s spire.

Needless to say, the footage is incredible, with sweeping drone shots showing Idol and Stevens side by side on the small platform above the clouds. Whatever nerves they may have been feeling from the vertigo-inducing heights, neither flinches as they knock out the passionate acoustic rendition — just like they did on the Today show in May.

“When I was a little boy we lived in Long Island for a few years and my mom and dad took me to visit the Empire State Building, probably in 1959,” commented Idol [via Classic Rock ]. “Hard to fathom that 65 years later I’d be playing rock ‘n’ roll on top of the building! Then and now the Empire State Building is an unrivaled jewel of Art Deco magic. A career highlight for sure!”

The video of the ESB performance was produced by Steven Gottlieb, who was approached by Idol’s team about the project.

“They came to me and said they wanted to film a performance at the top of the Empire State Building and they had a connection with a drone company that could help so it was sort of all pieced together nicely,” Gottlieb told Time Out New York .

He continued: “It almost feels unreal, as if it’s visual effects, but they’re not. It’s all real. It’s just an angle of the city that you almost never see. Everything that Billy does is larger than life and the Empire State Building is probably the most iconic tall building in the world so if you’re going to do something like this, this is where to do it.”

The performance was part of a continued celebration of the 40th anniversary of Idol’s classic album Rebel Yell . An expanded reissue of the LP was released earlier this year, and is available here .

Fans can catch Billy Idol much closer to the ground as he continues his current tour of Canada. Tickets are available here .

Billy Idol giving fans more, more, more with Canadian tour and expanded Rebel Yell release

billy idol tour texas

In 1983, Billy Idol broke big with the hit single Rebel Yell and album of the same name. Fans yelled, “More, more, more,” and now he’s given them just that with an expanded edition of the Rebel Yell album. Idol is currently touring across Canada to support it and spoke to The Globe and Mail in Toronto before his Friday concert at Scotiabank Arena.

You’re celebrating 40 years of Rebel Yell with a Canadian tour. Anything new on the set list?

We put out a remastered version of the album and there are a few extra songs on it that we’re doing on stage. We’re also doing some songs from Rebel Yell we don’t ordinarily do, like Catch My Fall and (Do Not) Stand in the Shadows . And we do the usuals, of course.

You’re also doing a cover of Rose Royce’s Love Don’t Live Here Anymore . What’s the story behind that?

We recorded that for Rebel Yell , but we found out Madonna was putting out a version of the song for the Like a Virgin album. So, we put it aside. Looking through the tapes, we found a full version of it. We’ve put it out, and we’re doing it as a duet on stage with one of the ladies who sings background. So, it’s a bit of a Rebel Yell extended celebration we’re doing.

Is it true you got the title Rebel Yell after seeing Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones drinking Rebel Yell bourbon?

I went to a birthday party for one of the Stones. They were drinking this stuff, and I was following the label up to their mouths with my eyes. Knowing a little bit about the American Civil War, I thought I could use the title, but make the song not about the Civil War but a cry of orgasmic love.

Yes, a female sexual cry. I wrote it with guitarist Steve Stevens, and it became a bit of a Billy Idol anthem.

Did you know that a few years ago the distiller changed the brand name to Rebel because they didn’t want the Confederate Army association?

Yes, well, my song has nothing to do with the Civil War. I took it and changed the meaning of it. In fact, the song says ‘She don’t like slavery.’ It’s actually about a woman’s liberation.

Watching you sing on your Live at the Hoover Dam concert film, your voice has held up. But others, like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, have blown their voices out. You’re 68. Does that concern you?

It’s sad that Aerosmith couldn’t do their farewell tour. I suppose we’re starting to find out about the repercussions of singing rock ‘n’ roll for a very long time. A lot of people in rock ‘n’ roll coming out of the 1970s were pushing their voices into a place that was a little unnatural. I’m not saying Steven was, but a lot of them were singing very high up with very loud music and forcing their voice above the music. I’ve never really done that. I always sang inside my range.

You’ve got a bit more grit to your voice now.

Yeah, it digs into the track more. It grips somehow. It’s actually not bad for me, what’s happened to my voice. It looks like it’s holding up. But there you go. You don’t really know what’s going to happen. Roger Daltrey said recently that the audience gives you up, or your body gives out. Hopefully I’m still a few years away from something like that.

Is there anything you can do to take care of your voice?

There’s an incredible doctor in Boston [Dr. Steven Zeitels] who fixes a lot of people’s voices. Miley Cyrus went to him. I know Roger Daltrey did. This guy can really repair your voice. My voice has deepened a bit, but I’ve never had any polyps – I guess I’m lucky, touch wood.

When you broke big in the 1980s, you had the sneer and the leather and the motorcycles in your videos. Was that an act? Where did you come from musically?

I grew up listening to Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, the Flamin’ Groovies and MC5. I saw MC5 in 1969. In England, we were very influenced by what was coming out in America. In particular, punk rock music.

What was the attraction?

The level of musicianship was very high in the 1960s, with Jimmy Page and people like that. We couldn’t imagine doing that. But with punk rock, the playing field was changed. We had a way in.

You started the band Generation X. But when did the motorcycles come about?

It was all part of the Easy Rider dream that was handed to us. You could live a life like that. You didn’t have to do what your parents did. We got a chance and we took it. That was what punk was all about.

Could you imagine punk going mainstream?

No. In England, punk was tiny. Then it exploded with the Sex Pistols. We thought it would last a year, but we were going to do it anyway. When we were young, we were told there were no jobs. No future.

The Sex Pistols wrote a song about that, no future.

Exactly. We were facing a world where there was no future. So, you do the thing you love. For us it was music.

A rock legend was spotted at a Vancouver seafood restaurant this week.

Billy Idol visited the Fanny Bay Oyster Bar & Shellfish Market the day after he performed in front of a packed Rogers Arena on Tuesday, July 30.

The 2024 Rebel Yell Canada Tour featured special guest Platinum Blonde (a band bearing the name of Billy's iconic frosty hair), and featured multiple of his classic hits, including "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell," "Mony Mony," and more.

The 68-year-old shared a photo on his Instagram from inside the Cambie Street restaurant, captioning, "Night out in Vancouver. Fanny Bay [has a] great selection of seafood!"

Idol donned a leather jacket, plaid pants, and a pair of shiny black shoes to dine at Fanny Bay.

The rocker also shared a video from his performance in Vancouver.
