Before the Google Flights platform launched in 2011, the process to search for all of your travel needs across a variety of websites was extremely cumbersome. Today, Google Flights has everything you need in 1 place to easily plan travel — it’s a robust website that helps you evaluate all of your Trip, Flight, Hotel, and Travel Package options.

In true Google fashion, the Google Flights platform is once again pushing the envelope with its price guarantee function, which we dive into below. In addition to its price guarantee function, Google added a feature that allows you to see your travel itinerary/itineraries on google.com/travel when logged into your Google account. Additional features include hotels, restaurants, and things to do recommendations from Google based on your destination.

Price Guarantee

Google Flights has recently added a new feature that gives users the ability to guarantee the lowest price possible.

When the multicolored guarantee badge appears, it means that Google is very confident that the price won’t get any higher before you fly. If a guaranteed price does go up, you can get an automatic refund of the price difference through Google Pay.

Track Travel Advisories and Restrictions

One of the newer features of Google Flights that is especially helpful in today’s climate is the ability to view and track any COVID-19 travel advisories or restrictions for the destination you’re searching for. This will include details like whether you’ll need to quarantine upon arrival or provide proof of test results or immunization records.

Better yet, you can also track these advisories and receive updates straight to your inbox. So if restrictions are added, lifted, or reduced, you will know about it right away and can make adjustments to your travels as necessary.

New and Improved Explore Feature

Those who have been using Google Flights for a while know that the Google Explore feature used to just show flight prices to a variety of major destinations from your home airport.

But now, you’ll see significantly more destinations on the map, including smaller cities and national parks, hotel rates, info on tours, activities, and attractions. You can also filter destinations that appear based on your interests (outdoors, beaches, skiing), the duration of the trip, the airlines that fly there, and more.

The first thing you might notice is that Google Flights isn’t quite as flashy as some of the online travel agencies like Expedia , Priceline , or Orbitz . Have no fear — it’s still a powerful search engine with lots of options!

Search Multiple Cities

Start by entering your basic search criteria, just as you would on any other site. Google Flights allows you to do multiple searches at once — up to 7 departures and 7 destinations in the search box! — saving you tons of time when you are doing a flexible search.

As an example, let’s say you want to fly from New York City to Europe but without a specific city in mind. In the departure box you can enter New York City, which will search all of the New York airports (LGA, JFK, EWR) — or you can select the airports individually, including other nearby airports like Islip, Long Island (ISP) or Philadelphia (PHL).

For your destination city, start typing in cities you are interested in visiting like Paris (CDG), Barcelona (BCN), Berlin (BER), etc. Google Flights will search for the best options all at once, instead of looking up the price of each route individually !

Your results list will display options including all of the cities added to your search. In the example below, we can see the cheapest flight is a nonstop flight from New York (JFK) to Paris (CDG).

Bottom Line:  If you have some flexibility in your travel plans or don’t know exactly where you want to go, Google Flights can save tons of time by combining multiple searches into 1. You can input up to 7 departure cities and 7 destination cities all in 1 search to see, quickly and easily, what the cheapest option will be. 

Search Multiple Dates

You now know you can search multiple departure and arrival cities, but how can you find out the cheapest dates to fly?

After inputting your departure and arrival cities, look at the dates to the right side of the search box. Clicking the calendar icon will display a calendar view showing prices for the whole month. Days that offer lower prices will be shown in green. As you can see, the majority of dates for this route in September and October have pricing for business class in green.

Hot Tip: You can adjust the duration of your trip by using the arrows at each side of the calendar box.

Google Flights has updated its Flight Insights section, found on the right side above your flight search results. A new Prices section is shown below your search results . With this new format, you’ll only see the Prices section when searching between 2 city pairs and not when searching for multiple destinations.

Hot Tip: We always use a rewards card that earns bonus points   on travel purchases. If you’re a business owner, we’d strongly recommend using a rewarding business credit card (we recommend Chase business credit cards ) when making a travel purchase, otherwise, you’re missing out on points, miles, or cash-back!

For deeper insight on the cheapest days to fly, click on the Date Grid . This will open up a grid showing the cheapest days to fly in green and the most expensive days to fly in red.

You can see even more pricing details by using the Departure and Return arrows on the top and right side of the Date Grid section respectively. For those with flexible travel dates, this can be a great way to save some cash!

Price Graph

The Price graph shows 2 months’ worth of prices in a visual graph form to easily see price trends by day. Scroll further in the future with the arrow to the right of the graph or change the duration of your trip using the -/+ buttons by your selected dates.

Although this tool lets you search for, compare, and purchase flights, it’s not technically an online travel agency like Travelocity or Priceline . Rather, it’s a highly effective metasearch engine that saves you the step of searching each airline and website individually.

How To Book a Flight

Scroll through the Best Departing Flights results and click on a flight that interests you. Flights listed in the Other Departing Flights section will typically be more expensive and/or include less than ideal layovers.

When you find the flight you want, you’re prompted to choose your outbound flight first, followed by your return flight (assuming you’re booking a round-trip flight). Keep in mind that the price shown on the initial results screen is the lowest possible price for that itinerary. The return flight you pick could alter the cost, so make sure to pay attention to the prices of each return flight.

When you’ve chosen your flights, Google offers a few options for booking — generally, these are the cheapest options it can find. You’re given the option to book directly with the airline operating the flight (often cheapest), through the airline’s partners, or with whichever online travel agencies offer the best deals.

Click the Select button next to the price of your flight and you’ll be redirected to that website to book your flight. The travel details are already set, so all you need to do is confirm them, enter your personal information, and pay.

Bottom Line:  While the other features that Google Flights offers are useful, its basic flight search functionality is the heart and soul of this tool. It’s not quite perfect and doesn’t have full access to every airline — for example, it can’t access prices for Southwest Airlines — but otherwise, it’s the best way there is to search for flights.

Tracking Prices

Google has a tool that lets you track flight prices — once set, you’ll receive an email if prices increase or decrease. To set an alert, look above the booking sites after you’ve chosen an itinerary and click the Track Prices button. If you’re logged in to Google, the alerts will be sent to your Gmail; otherwise, enter an email address.

You can access any flight price alert set by clicking on the 3-line menu icon in the upper-left corner of Google Flights and clicking Tracked Flight Prices . You can also see a graph with price changes from the day you set the price alert going forward.

Google also has an option to share a chosen itinerary before actually booking the flight. This tool can be extremely helpful when searching for flights for someone else or making group travel plans.

The Share button is directly above the Total Price of your flight with 2 options for sharing — 1) email the itinerary to yourself, or 2) share the itinerary with another person.

To email the itinerary to yourself, click the Send To Yourself button on the left. Similar to the Track Prices feature, the itinerary will be sent to your Gmail if you’re logged into your account, otherwise, you’ll need to enter your email address for the itinerary to be emailed to you.

To share the itinerary with another person, click the Share button on the right. A window pops up with options to share via Email, Facebook, Twitter, or Copy Link.

Bottom Line:  Google Flights is one of the most effective ways to search for flights. The platform has powerful tools to help make the flight search process easier than it otherwise would be. 

On the Google Flights homepage, you’ll notice an Explore Destinations button directly below the area where you select the dates of your travel. This tool is very interesting because it’s the perfect way to find some travel inspiration! There are 3 main ways you can search: Place, Date, and Price.

Explore Destinations With Places

The Explore Destinations Places section lets you input a place that you’d like to travel, and then populates a map on the right side of the page with markers showing the different places that you can go. You can scroll through the search list under the Price section or search destinations directly on the map.

Explore Destinations With Dates

Another way that you can use Explore Destinations is to search for potential trips by Date. Enter Specific Dates or Flexible Dates and the Explore Destinations map will update the results based on these filters. Similar to Places, when the search results are populated, you can scroll through the list of destinations on the left side or click the destination directly on the map.

Explore Destinations With Price

If Price is your filter of choice, slide the blue Price circle to the left or right to see what destinations populate based on your price parameters. Once you select the maximum price you are willing to pay, the map and list below the Price section will populate.

Selecting the Flight

When you select the flight for your trip, a new section on the right side appears showing you the cost of your different flight options. By clicking View Flight , you will be directed back to the main Google Flights homepage where you can book the flight.

Best Ways To Use Explore Destinations

We have found that the best way to use the Explore Destinations tool is when you want to take a trip and have a general idea of when you can travel, but you don’t know exactly where you want to go. In our experience, results have been more helpful when you keep the search criteria more general — for example, picking a month and duration rather than specific dates.

Not to be confused with Explore Destinations in the Flights section, Google Flights has a section titled Explore with recommendations of popular destinations. You can also enter a destination in the search tab directly below the word Explore.

When you click on a destination, Google Flights will take you to the travel guide for that city. For example, if you click Austin in the picture above, you will be directed to the Austin travel guide. Once here, you will find Things To Do, Suggested Day Plans, Plan A Trip, When To Visit, Travel Articles, Travel Videos, See More While You’re There, and Other Places To Explore sections.

The Travel section of Google Flights is another interesting area to check out. When you enter a flight, hotel, or destination, Google Flights will direct you to the Explore, Flights, Hotels, or Packages section of the platform.

Directly below the search area of Travel, Google Flights lists your Upcoming Trips pulled from your Gmail, Potential Trips that you can take, Popular Destinations , and Past Trips that you’ve taken (also pulled from your Gmail).

Bottom Line:  The Trips section helps to direct you to the area of Google Flights that fits your search criteria. 

To book a hotel, start your search with the Hotels section of Google Flights. Simply enter your destination in the Where To? section and your dates in the dates section and you will see both a list and map of hotels for your destination. Narrow down your results using filters such as Number of Guests, Price, Hotel or Vacation Rental, Guest Rating, Amenities, and/or Brands.

Similar to Flights, you can set price alerts to track hotel prices. By setting an alert and entering your email, you will be sent price alerts and travel tips directly to your email.

The Vacation Rentals feature is a great tool for those who want to book a vacation rental instead of a hotel, based on a few criteria, and want to view all of their options across multiple vacation rental platforms.

You can enter your Destination, Date, Budget, Rating, and/or Number of Travelers, and Google Flights will populate the top options based on the criteria entered.

Google’s been improving the Flights tool since it launched in 2011 by making it faster, adding new functionalities, and adding airlines and options. Price tracking is just one of those newer features.

Google Flights Price Guarantee

As we’ll cover in more detail below, Google Flights will show you whether the price of the flight you’re looking to book is high, low, or typical. This is extremely helpful to ensure that you get the best flight deal.

Google is testing this new feature with a trial period, which is only available on certain flights. You can search for flights on Google Flights to see if your route happens to be one of the routes Google is using during this trial period. As an example of how the new function works, if you book a flight during the trial period, Google will guarantee the price will not drop. If it does, Google pays you the difference. How could you not love that?

As mentioned, the price guarantee function is not fully rolled out just yet. During the roll-out phase, the feature is only available on select flights originating in the U.S.

Google Travel Itineraries

An additional feature Google Flights has added focuses on your trip itinerary. If your trip confirmation (i.e. flight) is delivered to your Gmail account, Google will show that trip itinerary in your google.com/travel list in a timeline format, similar to what you’ll see with TripIt. It’s an easy-to-read list that shows you everything that you have booked.

Google Travel Recommendations

After your flight is booked, Google will help you with your next set of travel needs.

When you click on an itinerary shown in your Google Trip list, you’ll see options for hotels, flights, restaurants, and things to do. For example, when you click on Search hotels in XX city for , Google will redirect you to its Google Hotels page. From there, everything you need to know to book a hotel will be at your fingertips.

With respect to restaurants, when you click the Top restaurants in XX city  tab, Google will redirect you to Google Maps. On this page, you’ll see the top-rated restaurants in that city.

But wait, there’s more! When you click on a restaurant, the restaurant’s Google Maps page pulls up. You’ll then be able to click Reserve A Table  to book a reservation. How could it get any easier?

Flight Delay Notification and Prediction

Google Flights will also predict delays to inform your purchase decision. In your search results, Google Flights will provide a note indicating flights that are often delayed.

Overhead Bin Access

Google Flights has a flight results filter to show which options include access to an overhead bin for a carry-on bag.

Enhanced by Legroom (Google Chrome Extension)

Google Flights has a  free extension for the Google Chrome web browser that adds information about seats to your search results. When you search for an economy class ticket, you’ll see the particular flight’s pitch (distance from the back of one seat to the back of the next seat) on the right-hand side of each result.

Flights with a smaller pitch are highlighted in red, while flights with a more generous pitch are in green. If you search for a premium cabin, you’ll see the type of seat on the flight — for example, a recliner, angled-flat, or lie-flat seat.

This is a fantastically helpful tool! As airlines are still working to make their fleets uniform following mergers over the past few years, it’s helpful to know exactly what kind of seat you’re paying for, especially since it can vary based on which plane is being flown on the route.

Bottom Line:  New features continue to be brought into the software tool — whether officially through Google or through third parties.

Google Flights is built on software that Google acquired when it bought ITA Software in 2011. That software still powers Google Flights, and if you want complete control over your search — from routing and fare code to the tiniest detail — you can access this software’s advanced interface.

Google Flights is a first stop anytime when looking for flights. It includes most airlines, features great prices, and searches various online travel agencies and airline websites to save you time. Even if you plan to book through an online travel agency (OTA), you should always search Google Flights first.

There’s just one catch to be aware of: Google doesn’t have access to pricing for Southwest Airlines flights. Whenever Southwest operates a route, it’ll appear at the bottom of the flight search results, but you’ll have to click it to visit Southwest’s site and see the price for yourself.

Without some kind of privacy, I wouldn’t recommend doing any sensitive work (credit card payments, email logins, etc) while on the road. In order to use the Chrome extension, you need a NordVPN subscription (and you also get the full software). I think it’s a must-have for travelers.

NordVPN also happens to be my preferred VPN software for travel.

The pandemic has forced everyone considering travel to examine the details of entry requirements for their desired destinations. Switching back and forth between travel booking websites and official country websites can be exhausting and well, just plain annoying.

Peanut is a browser extension that gives you access to all the information you need in your browser. On Google Flights, Booking, and Expedia, you’ll find a handy box that shows you exactly what you need to know in terms of visas, insurance, and current border restrictions.

The Peanut Chrome extension (also works on Brave and Microsoft Edge) is free and works flawlessly. Use this extension as your first travel hack this year.

Honey automatically finds discounts on any website that offers coupons and discount codes for products and services . For example, let’s say you’ve found a hotel you like on Booking.com (or any other booking website or service).

When you arrive on the payment page, Honey will check to see if it has discounts for the site based on your selection. It’s a great money saver that really needs no work on your part. I’ve saved quite a bit of money with the extension.

Alternatives to Honey for finding discounts on travel booking and travel gear are Lustre and Cently (see below)

Cently works like this: have you ever booked a hotel or flight and then wondered if there was a discount coupon code or lower price available somewhere else? Or maybe you’re shopping for vacation packages and want to search around for discounts mentioned on blogs but you don’t have the time.

Cently is a browser extension that finds you discounts by searching and applying coupons to your flight and hotel booking engine. If you have the extension activated, Cently will automatically prompt you about your coupon code when booking. It’s a great travel hacking tool that can save you a lot of money and it works on many sites, not just in the travel space.

Gopher is a tool that helps you save money and get cashback from hotel bookings.

Travelers can easily find out if a hotel offers ‘direct rates’ by installing this browser extension. Install Gopher on your browser and use it with your favorite hotel booking website to book your next hotel. Gopher will display a friendly little graphic if a hotel discount is available.

It will take a few seconds to see results, but from experience, I can tell you that it’s worth it. When you can save tens or hundreds of dollars in 10 to 20 seconds, what’re a few seconds? Although the results are not always impressive, check the extension whenever you decide on a hotel to see if you can find it cheaper than displayed on the booking website.

Simplify your vacation rental search by using a friendly browser extension travel guide rather than a booking agency. HiChee works like a price-check companion.

With the extension installed, you’ll see a small icon in the bottom right corner. View one of the big hotel and apartment rental platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Vrbo and compare prices for a property across platforms by clicking the HiChee icon.

The primary benefit of HiChee is its ability to consolidate information from multiple platforms into one, user-friendly interface—eliminating the need to manually compare prices across different sites.

HiChee presents a clear answer to under-the-radar costs by including service fees and taxes in their “True Nightly Rate.”

HiChee is not a booking platform so don’t expect customer support for bookings made via the extension. Ultimately, it simplifies the search process, offers transparency in pricing, and ultimately, saves you time and money.

A great little extension that I’ve been using for years. It deserves to be more popular than it is. Readlang lets you translate sections of websites on the fly. So if you’ve landed on a page with some foreign language text you can click to translate words directly in the browser. Especially good for people learning languages . Words that you translate are added to a flashcard system for later language practice.

Pruvo is a service that removes the buyer remorse or FOMO that you sometimes get when you book a hotel. Did I book too early? Will there be a better deal with a discount later? Should I wait and keep checking prices? Well, I’m happy that I don’t have to do that anymore. Add Pruvo to Chrome and you’ll be asked to provide an email address in a browser window that pops up. That’s all the configuration you need to do to get going with this money-saving tool.

When you book a hotel, you can do one of two things:

• Send the confirmation email to a Pruvo email address
• Click the Chrome extension and automatically send the details to Pruvo.

The second option is the clear winner here.

Pruvo reckons that 4 0% of hotel prices drop after reservations are made . So you don’t want to miss out on any potential savings. Pruvo finds a lower-priced deal so you can cancel the original and take the new price on a different site. And it’s free. Enough said.

Flight Fare Compare

Flight Fare Compare is a tool for comparing Google Flights to several other large flight search engines. When you’ve found a fare you like in Google Flights, click the Chrome extension button to compare the fare with prices from Skyscanner, Momondo, and Kayak .

When I’m doing flight research, I often use all 4 of these websites so this tool is a timesaver as I don’t need to open new windows and perform the search across all of them.

Pocket isn’t just for travel but it can be a very powerful resource collection tool for your travel plans.

Found some interesting articles about a city you plan to visit? Don’t have time (or don’t want) to read them right now? Add them to Pocket to read later on your computer, tablet, or phone. I use Pocket for saving visa information pages, subway maps, and important information about destinations.

Session Buddy

If you’re like me and you check multiple websites and portals with different currency and country settings in order to find deals, you’ll enjoy this next extension. Session Buddy lets you open new sessions (for different users/personas/logins) in Chrome tabs without affecting the current tabs. If you’ve already logged into a Hotels.com session with your main Gmail account, you can easily open a new session to Hotels.co.uk and log in via a different email address.

My experience has been that prices for hotels on Expedia, Booking, and Hotels.com can vary quite a bit depending on the currency and country settings. Give Session Buddy a try for some serious Hotel Travel hacking and travel planning.

Notion Web Clipper

Notion is veyr popular note-taking and organization tool with powerful tools for collecting and organizing information . I use it as a sort of brain dump, others use it to manage their lives, travelers use it for travel hacking and planning. My travel plans go into a Notion doc alongside clips from the internet. Along with the notes, I add photos, web clippings, and anything else that might be relevant.

Use Notion’s web clipper to save items of interest in your browser to notes in your app. Organize them later around your travel plans.

Hi Joachim, You could use the Data Miner chrome extension. It’s designed for web scraping but with some work you can autofill forms. But I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to select dates automatically. Chrome autofill will do the basics like names and personal details. Some of the hotel search websites also search multiple sites at the same time. Maybe that works for you. And try Alltherooms.com and hotelscombined.com

Joachim, try roomkey.com. It’s a hotel search site that has all of those hotels you mentioned. If you’re members of any of their loyalty programs, it’ll show you their loyalty rates too. You end up booking your hotel on hilton.com, etc, but the site lets you search all those hotels all at one, like you’re asking about.

The extensions for comparing car rentals are all outdated now. But try Myrentacar . I’ve found it the best for value in most places.

A TikTok video is going viral and getting travelers privy to another way to save money on flights. The Chrome extension Travel Arrow is designed to be an all-in-one travel planning assistant. However, millennial and Gen-Z travelers are loving how the plug-in filters through deals on flights. In the viral TikTok, the user described the extension as superior to Google Flights. 

While Google Flights will pull cheap flight pricing for travelers, Travel Arrow takes it a step further by pulling deals from airlines that Google Flights might miss. It even pulls from Southwest, the only airline that doesn’t display flight costs on third-party websites. 

When it comes to finding the best deals, travelers say Travel Arrow is more efficient than Google Flights.

Find Flight Deals Fast

Travel Arrow finds deals fast. Instead of shuffling through web pages looking for deals, the extensions display deals for you. Google Flights is beloved amongst travelers worldwide. However, it only will show the cheapest flight, not special deals and promotions being offered by each airline. Once you enter your desired flight, Travel Arrow will populate active deals on the airlines’ website. 

“I love Google Flights, but sometimes it doesn’t give me the best deals,” the TikToker said in the video.

The extension also displays deals from travel companies like Kayak, Expedia , Trip, and Skyscanner to ensure travelers find the best deals. For example, according to Lifehacker.com, the cheapest route on Google Flights from San Francisco to Austin was $281 on Frontier Airlines. Once they entered the same route into Travel Arrow, the extension found a cheaper fare of $243 through Kayak.

More Than Just Deals

Since the viral TikTok video, travelers have fallen in love with Travel Arrow tracking down flight deals. However, the extension does much more. Sometimes, it doesn’t locate the best deal but the shortest route. 

For those looking for deals on hotels, Travel Arrow has a feature that reveals the hidden 4- and 5-star hotels on Priceline’s Express Deal feature. If you don’t have time to filter through deals, you can set up notifications to be alerted when deals become available. Shopping with certain brands while traveling will give you cash back through the extension while its 24/7 travel concierge makes vacation planning easy and simple.

Simple Google Flights Browser Extension Makes Price Comparisons Easy

We here at TPG are huge fans of Google Flights . The ability to quickly search airline prices, schedules and routing options means that we're daily users of the free search engine. Tools like "Explore Map" are great for helping find a cheap getaway for particular dates or interests .

But, while Google Flights has recently rolled out some helpful improvements , there are still some shortcomings with the site that we'd love to see tackled. While we wait for features like filtering out basic economy fares, unaffiliated developers have taken the task on themselves to make the site better. Must-have extensions have been developed to add legroom data to initial search results and flag when a fare is a basic economy fare .

Now, there's another extension that helps you book your flight for the cheapest price. Flight Fare Compare is a Chrome extension that helps you easily compare the search results you find on Google Flights with fares for the same flights via Momondo, Kayak and SkyScanner.

I've tested the extension and found that it delivers just what it promises. When you complete a search, a notification appears at the top right corner with the option "Compare." Clicking that button will launch searches in new Chrome tabs on the sites that you've selected in the extension options.

If you're interested in adding this option to your future Google Flights searches, here's how to set it up:

• Open Chrome. (Unfortunately, this extension isn't available on other browsers)
• Browse to the Flight Fare Compare extension install page
• Click "Add to Chrome" and confirm.

Kayak, Momondo and SkyScanner are solid options for finding cheap flight prices. However, this is accomplished by linking to zero-service Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). I think that it'd be a nice improvement for Flight Fare Compare to also give options to link to more-trusted OTAs like Expedia and Orbitz — Google Flights already provides booking buttons for OTAs such as those on assembled itineraries, but not on search results.

Another function I'd love to see is an option to launch flight searches on the Citi or Chase Travel Portal, as this would make it easier to book with points and book AA Special Fares .

1. Tripadvisor Browser Button

First up on this list comes the Tripadvisor Browser Button. If you use Tripadvisor even just a little, then this Chrome extension will be a great help.

Google Flights has an extraordinary number of search features, yet it has a fairly intuitive interface that makes it easy to use.

The basic search allows you to find flights by simply entering your departure and destination cities and travel dates. It then provides a list of available flights, which you can sort by characteristics like price, duration, and departure or arrival time.

If your travel plans are flexible and you're looking to see where in the world (and when on the calendar) you can travel to score the best deal, use the Explore tool. These are two more tools that are helpful for determining the best time to travel, so long as your plans are flexible. "The date grid shows how prices change if you make slight adjustments to your departure or return dates — for example, depart on Thursday instead of Friday," says Lin. "The price graph shows how prices change for an X-day long trip over several months. You can scroll side-to-side and see what today’s prices look like for a trip of your desired length."

Google Flights provides insights into the price history of different routes, so long as sufficient data exists. "These insights will tell you if prices are low, typical, or high relative to what we’ve observed for similar trips in the past 12 months," says Lin. Google Flights also provides insights into whether or not you should book now, based on historical data. "For example, these insights could tell you that the cheapest time to book similar trips is usually two months before departure, and you’re currently in that sweet spot. Or you might learn that prices have usually dropped closer to takeoff, so you decide to wait before booking," says Lin. "Either way, you can make that decision with a greater sense of confidence."

Price Alerts

Once you've set your sights on a specific route, you can set flight price alerts to monitor any changes over time. We'll share more about price alerts below.

If you've ever used regular Google, you should have no problem adjusting to using Google Flights — the interface is easy to navigate.

Start the flight search process by entering your departure city, destination, and travel dates. Google Flights will display a list of matching flights, and the initial results are usually sorted by a combination of factors — like price, duration, and number of stops — to show the best options first. But you can sort by those individual factors, too.

If you have specific preferences — say, certain airlines or even airline alliances — you can use the filters to narrow down the list of available flights. You can also set a price range here.

When it comes time to book, Google Flights directs you to various sites. Google Flights is a flight search engine , not an online travel agency, so you won't actually book on Google Flights itself. "We aim to show as many options as we can, including direct booking with the airline, as well as other prices offered by third-party booking sites," says Lin.

One of the best ways to save money on flights is by being flexible with your departure and/or arrival airports. Fortunately, Google Flights allows you to include multiple airports in a single search. "For major cities with multiple airports, like New York City or London, we’ll include flight options for in-market airports by default," says Lin.

But you can manually include more airports in your search, too, expanding your options. For example, you might want to search for both Miami and Fort Lauderdale flights, since the airports aren't too far apart. "Just enter your first airport in the search box, then hit the plus symbol to add additional airports as desired. That way you can mix and match airports to get the best deal," says Lin.

Lin also notes that you can customize your search even more by choosing "multi-city" instead of "round-trip" in your search. This allows you to specify airports for each leg of your trip. "This could be helpful if you have flexibility on both sides of your itinerary," she says.

How to Set Price Alerts and Track Flight Prices 

Google Flights makes it easy to keep tabs on flight prices, so you can book as soon as you see the price drop. You will need a Google account to use this feature.

"From the Google Flights results page, you can toggle on price tracking for your specific destination and travel dates, and you’ll get an email notification if flight prices drop significantly," says Lin. You can track specific flights, too, rather than overall routes, and you can even track prices for routes without specifying your dates, allowing you to capitalize on the best deals throughout the year.

"You can view and manage your tracked flight prices by tapping on the menu on the top left of the page and selecting ‘Tracked Flight Prices,'" says Lin.

To maximize your experience using Google Flights — and save the most money — consider these additional tips.

Keep your travel dates flexible.

If possible, travel during off-peak times, such as midweek dates or during the shoulder season for popular destinations (Google Flights provides such intel through its insights).

Know that Google Flights does show basic economy fares.

The cheapest fare automatically shown on Google Flights is likely a basic economy fare . We typically advise against booking basic economy, as it's a highly restrictive fare class. Don't be surprised if the price ends up being a little higher to book a standard economy fare. But don’t worry — you can filter for higher fare classes, too.

Check baggage fees.

Some airlines, particularly low-cost carriers, may offer cheaper flights but charge high fees for checked or even carry-on luggage. You might end up paying more than the displayed price because of baggage.

Take a look at your flight's carbon emissions.

"For environmentally conscious travelers, Google Flights also shows the approximate carbon footprint for nearly every flight in the search results — right next to the price and duration of the flight," says Lin. "So, when choosing flights at similar costs or times, you can also factor carbon emissions into your decision." Google Flights will also let you know if those emissions are higher or lower than average for that route.

You can change the currency at the very bottom of the page.

If you're traveling abroad while searching for flights, Google Flights defaults to the local currency. You can change this by scrolling all the way down to the bottom of the page and selecting a different currency.

1. Easily navigate through airports and train stations 

Get around airports with Maps.

If you need to quickly find a store in a large mall or transit center, Google Maps has a  Directory  tab for all airports, malls and transit stations. This can help when you're running around the airport trying to find a place to eat or grabbing a last-minute souvenir before catching your flight. 

The tab will tell you a destination's business hours and what floor it's on. You can look through restaurants, stores, lounges and parking lots.

2. Find out how busy an attraction is before going

To see how busy a spot is, check out  Google Maps' Busyness tool . Already you could search for a location, like a business, to see a chart that shows how crowded it is in real time. A feature called Area Busyness lets you see when entire map areas are clogged with people. 

To use the feature, open the Google Maps app on your Android or iPhone (or your computer's browser) and move around the map to find a general area, say, downtown, a riverwalk or a quaint nearby town. The busyness information will now automatically appear on the map, so you don't need to specifically search for a place to see how crowded it is. Google Maps may say something like "Busy Area" and when you click for more details, it could say something like: "As busy as it gets" or "Not too busy."

You can also search the location you're after and scroll down to see busy times versus non-busy times.

3. See all your reservations in Google Maps 

Google Maps can chart your travels, but it can also quickly show you your flight, hotel, car rental and restaurant reservations, saving you the hassle of searching through your email for check-in times and confirmation numbers.

To see your upcoming reservations, all you have to do is search for "my reservations" in the Google Maps search box to see a list of what you've booked. Maps pulls this information from your emails in Gmail. You can also select an item to see more about the reservation, including the date and location.

4. Make a restaurant reservation without calling

Planning a dinner night out with a large group can be a hassle, especially when you go at a busy time. Google Maps can help you book a lunch or dinner reservation. Here's how. 1 . In Maps, tap the  Restaurants  button at the top of the map to see a list of places to eat.

2 . Select a restaurant that looks good, and in the window that pops up, reserve a table or join a waitlist, if it gives you that option (not all do). Remember you can use the busyness feature mentioned above to pick the least packed place. Also, note that some restaurants that are closed to dine-in may still allow delivery, curbside pickup or outdoor seating.

5. Use Google Maps when you don't have cell signal

Heading someplace remote where you may not have a mobile network connection? Google Maps can still give you directions when you're offline.

1 . Before you head out, search in Maps for the location where you'll want directions.

2 . In the location window, pull up the menu at the bottom. 

3 . Scroll right through the tabs and tap Download offline map , and then in the next window tap Download again. Maps will download a map to your phone for the area you selected.

Now, as you use Google Maps for directions in the area you downloaded a map for, when you lose your cellular connection Maps will switch to the offline map to guide you. Note that because you're offline, Maps won't be able to offer real-time traffic info.

6. Find EV charging stations nearby

If you're taking your electric vehicle out for shopping, dinner or a vacation, Google Maps can help you find EV charging stations on your route, along with estimated wait times for a charging port. You can also filter your search by connector type -- such as J1772, CCS (Combo 1 or 2) and Tesla -- to see just the stations that are compatible with your EV. Note you can also search for gas stations by following these same directions. ( Here's how you can save money at the pump .)

1 . In Maps, scroll through the tabs on the top of the screen and tap  More .

2 . Scroll down to the Services section and select  Electric vehicle charging . 

3 . Maps will display nearby charging stations and how many are available.

4 . Tap a  charging station  on the map to have Maps add it as a stop on your trip.

You can also use this trick to search for other places along your route, like a coffee shop.

7. Share your location with friends and family

Is anything more frustrating during a group activity than when the group gets split up and no one can find each other? Google Maps can help bring you all back together.

1 . In Google Maps, tap your profile icon in the top right corner and tap Location sharing .

2 . Tap Share location, and select who you want to share your location with and for how long you want to share it.

3 . Tap Share , and Google Maps will send your location to everyone you've selected.

4 . If you want to see someone else's location, tap that person's icon at the top of the window and then tap Request .

8. Creating, sharing and viewing curated lists 

How can you make sure you see all the sights during your vacation? If you create a list in Google Maps, you'll be able to save future destinations and have them all available at a glance. 

Simply go to the Saved tab and tap the + New list button. You can give the list a name and description. Then when you see a place on the map that you want to look at later, you can add it to your new list by scrolling right through the tabs and tapping the Save button. You can share this list with your travel companions and even invite them to collaborate.
