Description of the cruise from Athens to Aegina, Hydra and Poros islands

The cruise will start early in the morning. You will be received at the Port of Piraeus by the hostess and a warm welcome from the crew of the ship and you can either enjoy a soft drink at the lounge or stay at the open deck to watch the departure.

Soon after the departure, you will need to assemble to the main lounge where you will be given all the information you will need for the islands and your stay on the ship during the cruise.

The green island of Poros

poros island near athens

Two hours after the departure the cruise will take you to the island of Poros , which is the smallest of the islands you will be visiting, but also the greenest, with the most interesting coastline.

Poros is separated from the mainland of the Peloponnese Peninsula by a narrow strait that creates a truly unique landscape. The leisure time in Poros is approximately 50 minutes and you have ample time to walk down its small streets and take as many pictures as you like.

Hydra, the island with no cars

hydra island near athens

Continuing the cruise, you will be arriving at the port of Hydra , almost an hour and 15 minutes later. We recommend you to be on the deck to watch the arrival because the island of Hydra is amphitheatrically shaped and offers a unique view when entering the port.

The landscape of the island of Hydra is dramatic and is adorned by the traditional mansions and stone houses that reflect the richness of the island and its old citizens. You will notice right away that there are no cars on the island. Indeed, no vehicles are allowed, so you can only walk, take a bicycle, a donkey, or hire a water taxi to visit one of the more remote villages of the island!

Hydra is the ideal island to stroll; beautifully paved streets, quite many stairs, and a truly captivating seaside promenade. This is probably the island you will adore due to its uniqueness. You will be staying for an hour and a half in Hydra and when you return on the ship you will have a nicely prepared lunch that will give you a full idea of what the Greek cuisine tastes like.

Aegina, the largest of the Saronic islands

the greek island Aegina

Two hours later you will be arriving at Aegina, where you can choose what you want to do. Aegina is the largest of the islands and has a number of interesting sites to explore.

Classical tour on Aegina (optional)

There is a guided bus tour on the island that takes you to the Temple of Athena Aphaia , one of the best-preserved temples in Greece, which is built on a lovely hill and offers spectacular views to the entire island, as well as the Saronic Gulf and even Piraeus. On the way back to Aegina’s port you will make a short stop to the Byzantine Church of St Nectarius.

Panoramic tour on Aegina (optional)

The second option you have is the Panoramic Tour that will take you across the island to get an overview of the natural landscape. You will not get to see the archaeological site with this tour though. The tour will end with a stop by the seaside where you can enjoy a small meal with Greek meze dishes and ouzo!

NOTE. You can buy the tickets for both optional shore trips on board so that you do not need to worry about it.

When you return to the cruise ship, do not think that the cruise is over. The best is yet to come! The crew of the ship along with dancers and singers will dress in their original Greek costumes and offer you a Greek Traditional Folk Show on board, to animate you during the return to the Port of Piraeus. The main goal is to feel rejuvenated with this cruise, but also entertained!

The cruise from Athens to Poros, Hydra, and Aegina is by far the most popular cruise in Greece: elegant boats, delicious food, live music + dance, and a sea of happy faces from all over the world on a wonderful voyage to three Greek islands. Let’s sail together! You only need to bring your camera… we’ll bring a good mood!

Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argo Saronic Gulf. One of the main reasons why Hydra is a popular destination is its proximity to Athens, as a ferry from Athens to Hydra, will get you to the beautiful island in just 2 hours. It’s the perfect option for a quick getaway! Having been a filming location of “A girl in black” and “Boy on a dolphin” movies, as well as a holiday destination for Leonard Cohen, Hydra stands out for its classy beauty! In Hydra island, you won’t see any cars! Everyone uses their feet, boats or donkeys to get around the island. The cars ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, create a charming atmosphere and make the island one of the most serene destinations near Athens.

Poros is a little island in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, close to Aegina and Agistri. Thanks to its proximity to Athens -just 1-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port- it is a popular destination, especially for weekend getaways from the capital. Perched on the slopes a hill, overlooking the vast Aegean sea and the opposite Galatas, Poros Town is the center of the island’s activity. What’s more, in the picturesque Poros Town, you’ll find a great selection of Poros hotels, shops, cafes, restaurants, and taverns! Its proximity to the rest of the Saronic islands also makes Poros island Greece the perfect base for island hopping in Greece! So, your best bet is to combine your holidays in Poros with getaways to Aegina, Agistri, and Hydra, for the ultimate Saronic experience!

Aegina is an idyllic island very close to Athens, thus a very popular destination for quick getaways. Belonging to the Saronic group of islands, Aegina picturesque has many archaeological monuments, picturesque villages, and beautiful beaches! The center of the island is Aegina Town, the picturesque capital of Aegina. Boasting elegant Neoclassical buildings, narrow alleys and a bustling seafront promenade, Aegina Town is perfect for summer strolls! Aegina is also an island with glorious historical past, as it used to be one of the most important islands of ancient Greece, so it’s not a surprise that sightseeing is one of the best things to do in Aegina! Island Excursions

Hydra walking tour.

One of the most inspirational activities you can enjoy while visiting Hydra is the Hydra Walking Tour. The walk begins at the Merchant Marine Academy, dating from the 18th century, and the statue of ‘Miaoulis’ representing the island’s modern history and strong presence in the War of Independence (1821). There’s the option for a donkey ride (the island’s traditional mode of transportation) before visiting a traditional patisserie (1930) and enjoying its famous macaroons. You’ll delve into local history with a stop at the local flag and its symbolism and visit the square where scenes from a ‘James Bond’ film were shot, as well as square dedicated to the Prime Ministers of Greece originating from Hydra.

Other highlights include ‘Rafalia’, one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, housed in a renovated 19th century neoclassical building, the Monastery of the Assumption of Mary, as well as the Ecclesiastical Museum and the cannons of the island, with a view to the small island where the oldest shipwreck in the world (2,200 BC) was discovered in 1975. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Swimming Tour

Imagine the fun of a short speedboat ride to the crystal waters of a nearby island for a swim. Just a short distance from Aegina, you will have the opportunity to enjoy swimming in the clear sea surrounding either Agistri or Moni, the two picturesque islands close to Aegina (depending on weather conditions). Agistri is just 12 minutes away and Moni only a 7-minute speedboat ride from the port. These beautiful beaches are ideal for swimming surrounded by exquisite natural beauty.

You can swim in the crystal clear waters and enjoy the sandy beaches, next to peacocks and you may even see a deer in the distance. You’ll also have plenty of time to relax at the beach on comfortable lounge chairs, under umbrellas. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Panoramic Tour

The Panoramic Tour of Aegina leaves lasting impressions. The beauty and quietness of the countryside shed light on the inland character of the island. Enjoy a drive across the entire island (without visiting the archaeological site) admiring the beauty of its nature. Among the memorable sights are the famous Aegina pistachio groves, as well as the island’s medieval capital of Paleohora and the Saint Nektarios Monastery.

For a gastronomic delight, the final stop at a local taverna gives you a true taste of the island’s local cuisine. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Classical Tour

The Classical Tour of Aegina offers an inspiring experience into the modern history, culture and ancient character of the island, as well as a drive through the countryside where pistachio trees line both sides of the road. Representative of the island’s modern history is the Kapodistrian building, where Ioannis Kapodistrias resided as the first Governor of Greece. A visit to the Temple of Afaia is an unforgettable excursion. The temple is the focal point of the area of the sanctuary, founded in ancient Aegina to commemorate the Minoan deity Afaia, daughter of Zeus and Carme. The temple is in the Dorian style and is considered by many to be the model the Parthenon is Athens.

An impressive highlight of the tour is the Monastery of St. Nektarios, built between 1904-1910 by the Bishop of Pentapolis, Nektarios. Nektarios lived in the Monastery until he died in 1920. In 1961 he was declared a Saint. The church has two tall bell towers and four rows of windows, which all have red bows for a capstone. The Monastery is a convent where presently 14 nuns reside. The memory of the Saint is celebrated on November 9th. The tour lasts about 50 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

You can either purchase the tour on board, as it is not included in the ticket price, or contact us to help you choose the best package.

Definitely! Our one-day cruise is recommended for solo people who want to explore and experience a new destination, enjoy the sun, and meet others. Also, by the end of the cruise, people usually get to know each other and end up with new friends from all over the world.

Yes, we can arrange that. Please send us your inquiry, and we will get back to you.

Kindly note that we do not have an obligatory dress code for this experience. However, to feel more comfortable throughout the day, we suggest bringing a light jacket, towel, hat, swimsuit, and comfortable shoes (jelly shoes for rocky parts, etc.)

On our cruise, we specialize in Greek-Mediterranean cuisine and emphasize using fresh, seasonal ingredients from local markets and producers in Greece. We believe that food is crucial to our guests’ experience and hospitality. We understand that some guests may have dietary restrictions, and we encourage you to inform us of any such requirements before your onboarding experience. If you prefer a vegan lunch, we offer a range of dishes such as a Greek salad without feta cheese, a green salad, giant beans cooked in a tomato-based sauce, and rigatoni pasta with a tomato-based dressing, as well as fresh fruits after departing from Agistri island. If you have any allergies or specific dietary needs, please contact us at [email protected] at least 48 hours before departure. We will accommodate your requirements and make your dining experience on board enjoyable.

We regret to inform you that the Aphaia temple is situated on the island’s eastern side, approximately 13km from the port. To visit the temple, a taxi ride may cost between 20-40 euros for a 20-minute journey. Since you will have 1 hour and 30 minutes in Aegina, allocating a significant portion of your visit to the temple may be time-consuming. Moreover, you may miss the opportunity to explore Aegina’s main town and other breathtaking sites that the island has to offer.

We recommend that you bring some cash with you in case a situation arises where card payments are not accepted. While this is rare, having cash on hand can help you avoid any inconvenience during your trip.

We highly recommend arranging a pick-up transfer for a stress-free experience from the beginning. We’ve had cases where guests have faced difficulties finding the boat’s location, which could result in being late & therefore losing the experience. Opting for the pick-up transfer ensures a timely and hassle-free start to your trip. The transfer cost (15 euros) is the most affordable option compared to taking a taxi.

It is optional for guests to bring their food on board. We offer snacks throughout the trip, a satisfying lunch, and the chance to sample local products when visiting the islands. Hence, it is not necessary to bring additional food. However, if you prefer to bring your food, you are welcome to do so.

Our cruise operates under standard weather conditions and follows a strict policy framework. If there are changes in the predicted weather, the excursion itinerary may be adjusted. This could include altering the program or reversing the order of stops to ensure passenger safety and comfort.

Passengers who spent £680,000 for world cruise spend last 3 months stranded in Belfast

Florida resident Holly Hennessey and her cat have been stuck on Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey since the cruise docked at Queen's Island in Northern Ireland. However, three months on she's still there

Holly Hennessy has been waiting in Belfast from May for the ship to be ready

  • 12:23, 29 Aug 2024
  • Updated 12:59, 29 Aug 2024

Passengers stuck on a world cruise have been left stranded in Belfast for three months after their ship was faced with a catalogue of delays.

Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey had docked at Queen's Island in Northern Ireland to be repaired before it was set to depart on May 30 for the first part of a three-year cruise. However, the ship has still not left due to problems with its rudders and gearbox leaving passengers stranded in Belfast.

Holly Hennessey, a Florida resident travelling with her cat, Captain, has said those on board have "hunkered down" and made the city their home after being stuck there for three months. She has been unable to leave Belfast while waiting for the ship to be repaired. Although passengers are allowed to spend time on the ship during the day, they must leave in the evenings.

Are you on the cruise or know someone who is stranded? Contact @[email protected]

"We can spend all day aboard the ship, and they provide shuttle buses to get on and off," Ms Hennessey told the BBC . "We can have all of our meals and they even have movies and trivia entertainment, almost like cruising except we're at the dock."

Despite getting used to cruise life in Belfast, Ms Hennessey said the wet weather has been the biggest shock for her. "I've never had so much use for my umbrella in my life, and I carry my raincoat everywhere I go", she said.

Passengers on the Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey were given the option of buying their cabin outright rather than paying a daily rate for their room, which allows them to remain on board the initial three-year tour. However, according to Villa Vie Residences' website, the cost of buying a cabin can range from £75,000 to a staggering £680,000. Luckily, for Ms Hennessey she has a small living area with room for the cat, a balcony and a double-bed.

The company said it is trying to do everything it can to "relieve the anxiety" of passengers stuck onboard by planning trips and other cruises.

Angela and Stephen Theriac, who are also stuck on the ship, said they’ve made the most of their time by visiting Spain, England and Greenland while waiting for the cruise to be repaired.

Meanwhile, fellow passenger Dr David Austin, from Georgia, US, admitted he's given up "counting down" the days until the ship is ready to sail. "The payoff of seeing the world in this fashion is too great to feel too disappointed with each delay announcement," he said. “I was committed, having sold my house right before my arrival, and I’ve stayed committed to this adventure with every delay."

Mike Petterson, CEO and founder of Villa Vie Residences', admitted he expects the cruise to be leaving by the end of next week. "We're not focused on the next days or weeks, we are focused on the rest of our lives and what this company will do for the residents and the industry," he said.

Despite the three month delay for passengers, Mr Petterson said that Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey is the first "affordable" residential cruise ship and offers excursions to 147 countries. "When you're the first at doing something, you will run into hiccups, but we're definitely getting there, and although we are late, we will launch," he added.

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely that the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary — and for good reason. Found on both Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages , Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas — one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

athens day cruise 3 islands

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida — the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers have lots of choices. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

athens day cruise 3 islands

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in summer. Plus, wave season — when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year — runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain. You also won't have to contend with potential itinerary changes due to hurricane season , which runs from June through October.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found in summer, with lower temperatures during winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

athens day cruise 3 islands

Islands in the Bahamas are featured on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix of ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore, and even Gulf Coast departures from Galveston, Texas. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston, South Carolina.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

athens day cruise 3 islands

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, the country's proximity to the East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "Big Nine" brands — Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages.

One unique outlier is Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line), which operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort there, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas if they wish to do so before returning to Florida on the ship several days later.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

athens day cruise 3 islands

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, take a quick taxi ride to Paradise Island, which is home to the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use the outdoor pools and waterslides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style johnnycakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

athens day cruise 3 islands

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands that can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers on their first visit, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright-blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

Related: The 10 biggest mistakes cruise ship passengers make on port days

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Bimini Beach Club on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

athens day cruise 3 islands

Most of the cruise industry's private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually a barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also offer water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also available, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

athens day cruise 3 islands

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings , consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during wave season, when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for extras like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in restaurants that charge fees for meals. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates if you live in Florida, military discounts or " kids sail free " promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. Dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

athens day cruise 3 islands

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a trip to this popular cruise region.
