Olympic golf leaderboard: Women's scores, results from Round 3 at Le Golf National

Portrait of John Leuzzi

It's onto the final round of women's golf at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

And following a day of golf that saw quite the movement and change across the leaderboard, Friday's Round 3 set up what should be an entertaining and big final round of golf at Le Golf National on Saturday — including the possibility of several playoffs having to be used to determine medal winners.

Entering Saturday's fourth and final round, there is a two-way tie for the leader in the clubhouse, as Switzerland's Morgane Metraux and New Zealand's Lydia Ko are tied at 9-under par after 54 rounds of golf in Paris.

2024 PARIS OLYMPICS: Follow USA TODAY's full Summer Olympics coverage here

However, the competition has left very little breathing room for Metraux and Ko atop the podium as United States' Rose Zhang and Japan's Miyu Yamashita are each two strikes back, tied for second place at 7-under par. Zhang, the No. 9 golfer in the world, finished her Round 3 with an eagle putt on the challenging Par 5 Hole 18 — her second eagle putt of the day.

2024 Olympic medals: Who is leading the medal count? Follow along as we track the medals for every sport.

Reigning gold medalist Nelly Korda continued to make up some ground on the leaderboard as she finished 2-under par on the day for the second consecutive round. Korda bounced back from a 2-over-par start with birdies in three of the last four holes on the Front 9. She'd add two more birdies on the day on the Back 9.

Here's what to know from Friday's third round of wommen's golf at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including pairings, tee times, who is leading the leaderboard, how to watch information and more:

Who is competing for Team USA in Olympic women's golf?

Team USA's roster at the 2024 Paris Olympics includes Korda, Zhang and Lilia Vu. Korda is the defending gold medal winner from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Is there a cut line in Olympic women's golf?

No. Unlike the LPGA, there is no cut line in Olympic women's golf. This means that all 60 golfers who are competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics advanced into Round 3 and will play Friday and Saturday at Le Golf National.

Is there a playoff in Olympic women's golf?

Yes. Like the LPGA Tour, if there is a tie atop the leaderboard after Saturday's final round of golf, there will be a playoff. However, unlike the LPGA Tour, there will be a playoff to determine who wins the silver (second place) and bronze (third place) medals should there be a tie for those positions as well.

LISTEN LIVE TO GOLD SPORT:

‘I’m on cloud nine’ - Maddi Wesche on shot put silver

Maddison-Lee Wesche claimed the silver medal in a thrilling women’s shot put final at the Paris 2024 Olympics this morning.

Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany emerged as the ultimate champion , but not before a nail-biting battle with Wesche for the top spot.

For most of the final, Wesche held the lead. However, Ogunleye had a remarkable final-round throw, stealing the lead from the Kiwi athlete.

The crowd was electrified as Ogunleye hyped them up before unleashing a 20.00m throw. With one final opportunity to reclaim the lead and snatch the gold medal, Wesche gave it her all. Unfortunately, her last effort fell short at 19.68m.

Nonetheless, Wesche’s earlier throw of 19.86m, which also happened to be her personal best, secured her the silver medal.

Reflecting on her emotions after the event, Wesche told the Herald , “I am on cloud nine right now. I would have liked the gold, everyone wants a gold medal but a silver medallist is pretty good.”

When asked about her mindset during the competition, she shared, “I was just trying to keep with my same mentality, keep calm, keep happy, trust the pattern that I’ve been working on and training and just let the work do for itself.”

Wesche also highlighted the competitive nature of women’s shot put and despite the intense competition, she remains grounded.

“I don’t put any expectations or pressure on myself. You know, these may be the Olympics but it’s still a competition at the end of the day. So I just keep my same mentality. Keep it happy. Keep laughing.

“Women’s shot put is so competitive at the moment and there are so many women on the castle breaking 21 metres and 22 metres. So to be a part of that group of women that not only are competitive but are lovely people I like being around, I think it’s a good history to be a part of.”

A Kiwi woman has now stood on the podium in the shot put event at the last five Olympic Games. Valerie Adams claimed gold in Beijing and London, silver in Rio, and bronze in Tokyo. Wesche’s silver medal at Paris 2024 continues this streak.

After the event, Wesche ran to see her family.

“I had my sisters right up in the front row and then my mum and my other sisters and the rest of family came down for a hug as well. There’s other family amongst the stadium, but I haven’t seen them yet.

“They were just super proud. Mum was crying and my sister was speechless and they were just so happy. I think my coach is even speechless.”

Lydia Ko is Tied for the Lead With a Gold Medal and LPGA Hall of Fame in Her Sights

Lydia Ko

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Lydia Ko of New Zealand shot a 4-under 68 to share the lead Friday, leaving her 18 holes away from a chance to complete her Olympic medal collection with gold that would send her into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Ko was poised to take a lead into the final day at Le Golf National until Morgane Metraux of Switzerland steadied herself from a rough patch by holing a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th to salvage a 71 and catch Ko.

They were at 9-under 207, and the stage was set for yet another dynamic Olympic conclusion.

That starts with Ko, who won her first LPGA Tour title at 15 and reached No. 1 in the world for the first time at 17. Now she is one point — one victory — away from the LPGA Hall of Fame and can get that Saturday. Ko won the silver medal in Rio de Janeiro and the bronze medal in Tokyo.

"All I can do is do my best out there and hit quality shot and see where that puts me and hopefully I get a good chance at it, because the Olympics doesn't come around every single day and definitely not even every single year. So to be in this kind of position is awesome. I'm excited to embrace all of this."

Rose Zhang, the decorated American amateur star who won her first tournament as a pro and hasn't really slowed, had two eagles on the back nine to offset a shot into the water for double bogey. It added to a 67. She was two behind, along with Miyu Yamashita (68).

Still very much in the mix was Nelly Korda, the No. 1 player in the world and defending Olympic gold medalist. She hit into the water on her first hole. She chopped up the reachable par-5 third and made bogey. And then she holed out from 82 yards in deep rough for birdie and kept herself in the game with a 70. She was five behind.

Korda watched Scottie Scheffler rally from a six-shot deficit on the back nine on Sunday and win the gold medal.

"Anything can happen," Korda said.

Also five shots behind was Celine Boutier of France, still getting the loudest cheers, especially when she overcame a triple bogey with three straight birdies at the end of a 71.

Amid all those possibilities sits Mariajo Uribe of Colombia, who targeted the Olympics as a place to retire. She didn't have full status on the LPGA Tour this year and traveled the world in search of ranking points for a chance to make the Olympics her farewell.

She was tied for the lead on the back nine until two late bogeys for a 71. Even so, she was four shots behind — two shots away from a chance to reach the podium.

She brought no recovery gear because Saturday will be her last round. She has Colombian colors of red, blue and yellow on her shoes, along with socks that have a smiley face. She brought a flag to wave on the first tee.

"It's going to be a great day, no matter what happens," she said.

Metraux, who started the round with a one-shot lead, looked to be fading when she made three bogeys on four holes to start the back nine. She steadied herself with a birdie on the par-5 14th, and then hit hybrid over the water to 20 feet for the closing bogey.

Winless on the LPGA in her three years, she now finds herself on a grand stage with one of the LPGA's biggest stars of this generation and Zhang, seen as the LPGA's future star.

"I was a lot more calm and serene than I thought I was going to be," Metraux said. "Things just didn't quite drop for most of the round for me. But I stayed really patient and it paid off on the last hole."

The round came to life in a span of about two minutes on the back nine. Zhang drilled a 3-wood over an expansive bunker on the 14th to 30 feet and holed it for eagle to reach 7 under, right about the time Metraux and Ko were making bogey on the 12th hole. That created a four-way tie for the lead with Uribe.

Korda narrowly missed an eagle putt on the 14th and then took on the flag over the water on the 15th for a 20-foot birdie to get within two. Aggressive, yes.

But she didn't finish it off — she didn't make quadruple bogey like Thursday, though she missed a 30-inch par putt on the 17th and went from rough-to-rough on the 18th that took away a prime birdie chance.

"We'll see how it goes," she said. "I'm giving myself a chance."

Matt Kuchar's FedEx Cup Playoff streak refuses to die without a fight and aces were wild at 2024 Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Playoff fever, can you feel it?

The final of 35 regular-season events on the PGA Tour will be a twin bill of sorts as the second round will resume at 6:45 a.m. ET, followed by plans to play 36 holes to complete the 72-hole tournament and determine the top-70 finishers in the season-long points race who will advance to the first playoff event in Memphis next week.

There were 20 players still needing to complete their second round on Sunday morning before a 36-hole cut can be made.

Matt Kuchar grabbed a one-stroke lead over three players at 12-under 128. He posted a 6-under 64 at Sedgefield Country Club on Saturday. Here are five things to know about the 2024 Wyndham Championship heading into Sunday.

Needing a win to get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Matt Kuchar is trying to follow in the footsteps of Lucas Glover last year and win to get in. Kuchar is the only player to make the playoffs in every season since the FedEx Cup began in 2007.

“Certainly been a frustrating year, but I feel like the bar's been set high,” Kuchar said. “I feel like I played a lot of good golf, consistent golf for a long time. Makes the poor golf that much more frustrating. I think the expectations are high. So I continue every week to expect to play good golf and it's not always gone that way, but nice to see things kind of rounding into form. Hope it's not too late, hope I still got a chance to continue going.”

Kuchar finished T-3 at the 3M Open and picked up where he left off with a pair of 64s to take the 36-hole lead. How does he feel about Sunday’s marathon finish?

“I've got some built-in confidence knowing that a month or two ago when I was down at the U.S. Open qualifying, did 36 holes at the Bear's Club, was medalist down there. Able to walk 36 in the heat and humidity without too much problem,” he said. “Glad I grew up in central Florida and know this stuff pretty well.”

Greyserman's putting prowess

About the only putt Max Greyserman failed to make during his second round on Saturday was a 49-foot birdie putt at 18 for 59.

Inexplicably, he left it short.

But he made more than 188 feet of putts for the round, including a 75-footer for birdie.

“Looked pretty good the whole way,” he said. “It was kind of a tricky putt up and over a knob, but didn't have too much break. I was so far away, I couldn't even tell, but it looked pretty good.”

When told about the long-range bomb, Denny McCarthy, one of the Tour’s best with the short stick, said that’s more feet than all of the putts he’d made in his first two rounds. His caddie chimed in, “He’s not lying.” (Well, truth be told, McCarthy made 99 feet, nine inches, but point made.)

When Greyserman sank a 24-foot birdie at 17, he reached 10 under for the round and knew the course was a par 70 and that a birdie would break 60.

“The last four holes it was in my mind for sure,” he said.

After just two birdies in his opening round, Greyserman shot the second 60 of the tournament and leaped into a tie for second at 11-under 129 with Chad Ramey and Cameron Young.

Projected FedEx bubble

Heading into Sunday's 36-hole marathon, here are the players on the bubble for the top 70 and qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

66. Brendon Todd (T-10)

67. Nick Dunlap (MC)

68. Emiliano Grillo (T-26)

69. Jhonattan Vegas (T-46)

70. Seamus Power (T-46)

71. Victor Perez (T-26)

72. Davis Riley (T-26)

73. Andrew Putnam (MC)

74. Kurt Kitayama (MC)

75. Luke List (MC)

Whose bubble will burst?

Keith Mitchell summed up what it feels like to be on the outside looking in on the playoff picture this week at the Wyndham Championship.

“It's all or nothing really,” he said. “I'm kind of playing from behind and it's no fun to do that, you've just got to kind of dig deep and do the best you can.”

He did just that on Saturday, shooting 64 to improve to 6 under and keep his hopes alive. He’s projected No. 78. When asked if he feels a bit like a football team down four with two minutes to go in the game, he said, “We might be down nine, I might need to throw -- go for two and kick a field goal, you never know.”

Davis Riley, who is projected at No. 72, shot a solid 66 to take care of the first part of the puzzle and make the cut.

“For sure, it's a big round,” he said. “It's very hot out here and it was honestly one of the toughest rounds of golf I've played. I've been a little bit under the weather the last couple days and I was grinding out there. Yeah, so I'm exhausted. To play the weekend and hopefully put together a playoff berth would be big time.”

Among those assured of missing the cut include Andrew Putnam, who took three putts from 25 feet at the last hole, Kurt Kitayama, Luke List and defending champion Lucas Glover.

There were not one but two aces on Saturday. Both were made at the 189-yard, par-3 12th hole.

First, Lucas Glover made his sixth career hole-in-one on Tour (tied for ninth-most since the Tour began tracking hole-by-hole data in 1983).

That was followed by Joe Highsmith, who became the first player to make three holes-in-one in a single season since the Tour began tracking hole-by-hole data in 1983; other holes-in-one this season: The American Express (R2/No. 13), Rocket Mortgage Classic (R2/No. 5).

"Yeah, it was super cool. I hit 6-iron and it was kind of a perfect number and I knew if I pulled it long right that I had a little backstop over there. It worked out perfect," he said.

Town Famous for Royal and Hollywood Guests Is Ravaged by Wildfires

Fast-moving fires have destroyed a third of the buildings in the picturesque town of Jasper, Alberta, and its national park. But the mayor hopes to rebuild.

A destroyed truck rests in a charred, barren landscape. Large mountains rise in the distance under cloudy, overcast skies.

By Ian Austen

Reporting from Ottawa

Queen Elizabeth II vacationed there, as did her parents before her. Hollywood’s royalty were regular visitors, too. Marilyn Monroe filmed scenes for “River of No Return” there, and “The Emperor Waltz” brought Bing Crosby and Joan Fontaine to its golf courses and tennis courts. The mountains of Jasper, Alberta, have also stood in for peaks around the world in other movies.

Above all, Jasper National Park represented Canada both to the world and for many Canadians for over a century.

Now, tens of thousands of acres of the park and its mountain town of Jasper are either burning in an inferno or have been reduced to rubble and ash. Parks Canada, the national agency, said that since two large-scale wildfires, which sent up a wall of flame more than 300 feet high, were whisked into the community on ferocious winds earlier in the week, 358 of its 1,113 buildings have been destroyed.

“The nature of this fire was such that it humbled the humans on the ground,” Richard Ireland, the mayor of Jasper, told reporters in Hinton, Alberta, on Friday. He added that he believed that nothing could have stopped the destruction and that all necessary preparations had been taken.

“We want to be in the mountains,” he said. “We want to be in nature. And that means our community is exposed to the threat of wildfire. There are lots of forested communities in Alberta that are exposed.”

The cause of the wildfires is still unclear.

In the vast mountain park, which attracts about 2.5 million visitors each year, the fire has consumed more than 140 square miles, Parks Canada said. About 20,000 park visitors and 5,000 Jasper residents were evacuated late Monday as ash began raining on the town in advance of the flames.

A team of researchers said last year that climate change has increased the risk of large wildfires in Canada , where the fire season typically runs from March to October. Earlier this year, Canadian wildfires also prompted air quality warnings in places including Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Before returning on Friday for a tour of the town, where the fire was still burning, Mr. Ireland had said that he was “prepared for the worst.” On the tour, the mayor discovered that his own home was a charred ruin.

Yet there were some glimmers of positive news on Friday.

Wildfire fighters from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are expected to arrive over the weekend to help battle the 577 active blazes in Alberta and neighboring British Columbia. They will join crews that have flown in from other parts of Canada where wildfires have been relatively scarce this summer.

The Canadian National Railway restarted freight train service through Jasper on Friday, reopening an economically vital corridor between the Pacific Coast and the rest of North America.

Officials said that rain and lower temperatures had allowed 158 firefighters who remained in Jasper to at least halt the fire’s advance, although no one had any opinion on when it might be brought under control there (hot and dry weather is expected to return on the weekend). And all the town’s water-treatment facilities, its schools, hospital and other important infrastructure have been saved, according to Parks Canada.

“It is a better day,” the mayor said. “I don’t want to say a brighter day, because I want it to get dark and thunder and lightning, rain like crazy.”

The worst-hit areas are largely residential neighborhoods on the west and south sides of the town, according to the parks agency. No one has died or been seriously injured because of the fires.

Mr. Ireland cautioned that when residents returned — still several weeks away, officials said — they might find that even if their homes or business buildings had been untouched by fire, they might nevertheless be severely damaged by smoke or water.

“It’s going to be difficult,” he said of the day when the town reopened to its citizens. “The pain that will be felt almost defies description. It is beyond comprehension.”

Jeff Morris, a driver and guide for a tour company in Jasper, told the CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, that posts on social media suggested that his house had been saved, while the rest of his subdivision had been destroyed.

It looks like almost an “apocalyptic nightmare,” he told the broadcaster, adding that he was already preparing to help neighbors sort through the remains of their homes. “I’ll help, wherever, wherever my hands are needed. We’ll put the town back together.”

Along with the neighboring Banff National Park, Jasper was made a park in large part to promote tourist travel by train, which was initially the only way to reach the community. Claire Campbell, who edited and contributed to a scholarly history about what is now Parks Canada, said that the striking mountain scenery soon became an international symbol of the then young nation.

“Both at the founding of the original Rocky Mountain parks right through to the present day, images of these parks have been exported internationally as representative of Canada by the federal government,” said Professor Campbell, who is Canadian and teaches Canadian history at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. “In some ways, we see how the world sees us, and then we adopt that image, as well.”

Both parks dislodged Indigenous people from their lands and, until recently, shut them out of their operations.

Professor Campbell said that Jasper, where Canadian National built a wood lodge surrounded by wooden cabins, always had a different reputation from Banff, where the Canadian Pacific Railway built an enormous, stone-clad hotel in the style of a French château.

“Jasper was the more rustic of the two and offered a more romantic, back-to-nature atmosphere,” she said.

The original Jasper Park Lodge burned down in the early 1950s. Its replacement, which opened in 1952 and is now known as the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, survived the current fire, but four other buildings in the complex have been lost, the hotel chain said.

Mr. Ireland, the mayor of Jasper, said that he had no doubt that his town would rebuild.

“The mountains are still there,” he said. “They will be there and so will our community.”
