One Day Trips from Bangalore within 50 km

There are many lakes and hills near Bangalore within 50-60 km. Personally, I love going on long drives far away from the city, but if you are taking your kids or older parents with you, you may prefer a relaxed trip. These are also suitable for trekking spots like Savanadurga, Skandgiri and more. The ones I listed below are slightly less crowded than the above.

1. Bannerghatta National Park

Banerghata - one day trip from Bangalore

Located within 25kms from Bangalore City, many would argue that Bannerghatta National Park is very much within Bangalore. However, that shouldn't prevent you from spending an entire day in this wonderland rich with a variety of flora and fauna spread across 65000 acres including the Banerghatta Biological Park (currently operating as an independent entity).

Apart from the sanctuary that is home to a significant number of protected lions and tigers, the premises also include a zoo, a butterfly park and a lake for boating. It is a great choice for one day outing in Bangalore with kids.

After an exhilarating experience in the national park you can drive to Thottikallu waterfalls, just 10 km away from here.

2. Manchinbele Dam and Big Banyan Park

Beautiful view of Manchinbele Dam - Best Bangalore Daytrip within 50 km

Distance: 45 km | Things to do: Picnic, Water Sports | Duration: 4-5 hours

This is the easiest weekend getaway from Bangalore, a favorite among corporate junkies yet surprisingly devoid of the crowd on the weekends. Originally constructed for irrigation purpose, the place is now famous for water-sports and corporate team-building activities. If you are not into this type of thing you can simply park your car away from the entrance, walk on the hills and enjoy the beauty of nature. The view of the blue water blending with the clear blue sky is spectacularly serene. It is also a great picnic spot for family and friends.

Read about our day trip to Manchinbele

Bonus! On your way back you can head to Dodda Alada Mara, the 400-year-old Big Banyan Tree near Bangalore. Covering 3 acres area, this is one of the largest trees of its kind and is home to a beautiful park. Another place you can add to this one-day trip is a beautiful lake Nelligudde kere .

3. Ramnagaram Night Trek or a day trip from Bangalore

Ramnagara sunrise

Distance: 55 km | Things to do: Trekking, Camping| Duration: 12 hours

This is the place where the famous dacoit Gabbar Singh used to live with his gang.

Yes, Ramnagaram is the shooting location of the legendary Indian movie “Sholay” but this is not its only claim to fame. Amidst the dense forests stand the granite hills that you can never miss being awestruck at. A trek to the peak will take roughly 2-3hours for rookies. This is also one of the few places that are still open for night trek and camping near Bangalore.

You can easily start the early morning at 5 am and reaching a peak at night and waking up to the golden sunrise is an experience you do not want to miss.

One Day Trips from Bangalore within 100 km

There are many exciting places to visit around Bangalore within 100km. These include picnic spots, hill-tops, medieval forts, and ancient caves.

4. Nandi Hills

one day flight trips in india

Distance: 67 km | Attractions: Nature, History | Duration: 4-6 hours

Home to historic temples Nandi Hills became a fortress and summer retreat of Tipu Sultan. Prisoners are said to have been thrown to their death from what is known as “Tipu’s Drop” now. But today it known for its panoramic views. Sitting at an altitude of 4849 ft, Nandi Hills is the most popular day-trip destinations from Bangalore.

Huge crowds queue up for tickets from 5 am to see the gorgeous sunrise. Nandi Hills is also famous for ancient Hindu temples, cycling and paragliding.

Book a private excursion to Nandi Hills

5. Mandargiri – A short one day trip from Bangalore

Mandargiri day trip from Bangalore

Distance: 67 km | Attractions: Temple, Panoramic views| Duration: 4-6 hours

Just 67km away from Bangalore, accessible through a 1-1.5 hour drive through the amazing Tumkur road lies one of the really off-beat places for travel lovers in Bangalore.

Dotted with 1000-year old Jain temples this round hillock also offers a spectacular sunset for nature enthusiasts. The large rocks on the hill and the peacock feather design of the Jain temple provide perfect “Instagramic” backdrop for your photos. You can also visit for a small trekking opportunity to keep yourself fit.

6. One day trip from Bangalore to Antargange Caves and Hoskote

Distance: 69 km | Attractions: Trek,Cave exploration| Duration: 6-8 hours

Antargange  in Kolar is one of the most popular attractions for adventure-loving youngsters. At an altitude of 1712 meters, it offers spectacular views and thrilling experience of cave exploration.

The 3 km trek will take 2hours uphill, after which you can visit the temple Kashi Vishweshwara. If you are not too tired on your way back, you can complete this one-day trip from Bangalore with a tour of the historic fort area of Hoskote.

7. A trip to Avalabetta and Gudibande Fort- Two short treks in a day

one day trip to avabetta from bangalore

Distance: 90 km | Attractions: History, Nature| Duration: 9-10 hours

On a regular weekend, a drive to Avalabetta will take 2-2.5 hours. After that, a 1.5 km trek will lead you to the cap-shaped rock-cliff, an attractive point for photography. Unless you visit in the dry summer months you will get to see a pond at the hill-top which adds to the beauty. Note that the path to the hilltop is blocked now for many months due to some accidents.

After descending from the peak you can either drive back home (why the hell? ) or drive just 24km ahead to reach the Gudibande Fort. This is a massive 17th-century fort with well-preserved walls, which can be reached by a flight of steps. Personally, I (and all 3 of my travel buddies in the trip) liked the Gudibande fort way more in all respects – no crowd, interesting architecture, cave temples, and panoramic view.

Read about our trip to Avalabetta and Gudibande fort from Bangalore .

One Day trips from Bangalore within 150 km

Let me tell you there are too many options for a one-day trip from Bangalore within 150 km, too many to list in one single post. Below are some of the most scenic trails from Bangalore.

9. One Day Trip from Bangalore to Madhugiri

Distance: 110 km | Attractions: History, Nature| Duration: 9-10 hours

Madhugiri is the second largest monolith in Asia, a feat that deserves attention in itself. However, perched atop the hill is a historic fort of the Vijayanagara empire. The Madhugiri Fort has some of the earliest water tanks of India which were built to harvest rainwater.

The trek to Madhugiri fort is of moderate difficulty but the grandeur of the fort and the views from the hill-top will make it worthwhile.

Check out the list of best forts in India chosen by travel experts.

10. One Day Trip to Sangam, Mekedatu and Chunchi Falls

one day flight trips in india

Distance: 115 km | Things to do: Scenic drive, Nature| Duration: 8-11 hours

A scenic 2-hour drive away from Bangalore lies the beautiful natural spot, the confluence of the two most important rivers of Karnataka – Arkavathi and Cauvery. On your way, you will drive through winding uphill road lined with seasonal trees on both sides which look surreal in summer when they dry-up. It was a hot summer afternoon when we visited the place, but it was still throbbing with travelers.

Drive just 4km from here to reach Mekadatu to see the stunning natural designs formed on granite rocks formed by the river Cauvery cutting through it for thousand years. On your way back you can also trek to the Chunchi Falls. A trip covering all these three locations will take 10 hours.

11. Day Trip to Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve

one day flight trips in india

Distance: 117 km | Things to do: Vineyards, Wildlife| Duration: 7-8 hours

Jayamangali blackcuck conservation reserve is located in the Tumkur district of Karnataka, at the border of andhra Pradesh. Besides blackcucks it is famous for beautiful vineyards. The arid grasslands provide a great location for photography. These endangered species is a dark colored antelopes indigenous to India. It is also the state animal of Andhra Pradesh.

12. Day trip from Bangalore to Hogenekkal Falls and Forests

Hogenekkal falls is wide plunge formed by the Kaveri river in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. It is a charming perennial waterfall and one of the most popular places near Bangalore for one-day trips despite its distance.

You can also take a coracle or boat ride in the river here. Unlike Shivanasamudra, Hogenekkal still allows tourists to reach till the bottom of the waterfall. Since it is a perennial fall, it is the best time to visit is between October – March. The water gets extremely muddy in monsoon.

Distance: 124 km | Things to do: Scenic drive, Nature| Duration: 8-11 hours

13. One Day Trip to Kaigal Falls via Chhota Ladakh

Tree-covered trekking trail of Kaigal Falls - a great place for one-day trip.

We trekked to Kaigal Falls on our way to Horsley Hills. That's not a bad idea, but I've a better plan for a one0day trip combining Kaigal Falls with Chhota Ladakh.

Dodda Ayur earns its name “Chhota Ladakh” from the rustic beauty of a barren moon-like terrain at a high altitude. A charming lake was formed in the hills through a natural process of rainwater that collected in the stone mining quarry.

It's a picture-perfect picnic spot just 56km away from Bangalore is one of the best places to visit near Hoskote.

However, you can drive further from here to the Kaigal Falls, located about 40 KMs from Chhota Ladak. It involves a leisurely hike through the forests leading to a seasonal waterfall.

This is the perfect itinerary for a scenic one-day trip near Hoskote.

14. A day trip from Bangalore to Lepakshi

One Day Trip from Bangalore - Lepakshi

Distance: 130 km| Attractions: Temple, Architecture | Duration: 6-8 hours

Lepakshi is a historical town in Andhra Pradesh which is home to the iconic Veerabhadra Temple. The temple is an architectural masterpiece which has so many mysteries surrounding it. Did you hear of a temple with a hanging pillar? This is that temple.

Apart from this, you can find the giant Nandi Statue (a monolithic bull structure) and the Jatayu theme park. These 2 attractions apart from the great temple are enough to keep you engaged for 4-5 hours at Lepakshi, if not more.

Book a deeply engaging private Lepakshi day trip from Bangalore .

15. One Day trip from Bangalore to Shivasamudra

one day flight trips in india

Distance: 135 km | Attractions: Nature| Duration: 8 hours

Drive about 30 km more from Talakadu and you will reach this picturesque village Shivanasamudra which is home to the Barachukki and Gaganachukki falls. These perennial waterfalls have been consistently ranked among the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Best time for a trip to Shivanasamudra is in monsoon. Unlike Hogenekkal, the water is not muddy here in the rains.

Book a trip to Shivanasamudra and Somnathpura Temple

A trip to Shivasamudra via Manchinbele Lake is one of the best routes for long drives around Bangalore . The one day trip from Bangalore to Shivanasamudra can also be clubbed with Talakadu i nstead.

16. Shravanabelegola – Tallest monolithic statue in the world

Shravanabelehola

Distance: 143 km | Attractions: Heritage, Active Pilgrimage| Duration: 10 hours

Shravanabelegola is most famous for the Gomateshwara Bahubali temple which has a 58 ft statue of Mahaveer Jain – the tallest monolithic statue in the world. The temple is accessible via a flight of 620 steps.

The temple dates back to 983 A.D. but is in such a great condition that it is hard to believe its age. Apart from the architectural wonders, the temple also offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the town.

There are many other old temples which you can explore here, all of which date back to 800-1000 years. For a history-seeker this is a great destination for one day trip near Bangalore.

17. A One Day trip from Bangalore to Horsley Hills

One Day Trip from Bangalore - Horsley Hills Governor's Bunglow

Often dubbed as the Ooty of Andhra Pradesh, Horsley is a beautiful hill station only 140 km from Bangalore. Vibrant blossoms greet you on your way leading to the Horsley Hills. There are two viewpoints which offer a great panorama.

One Day trip within 200km from Bangalore

For longer day trips, it's best to hire a car for full day or drive yourself. Using public transportation may not be the best option as the buses are frequently delayed. Here are my favorite places to visit on a day-trip from Bangalore within 200km, where you can easily drive to.

18. Yelagiri – Hills, lakes and adventure sports

One Day trip form Bangalore to Yelagiri

Distance : 159km | Trekking, Nature,Adventure| Duration: 10 hours

With temperate climate and greenery all year round, this hill station in Tamil Nadu is one of the best day trips from Bangalore for adventure lovers. The drive uphill needs a little bit of expertise but the views from 3465 ft are breathtaking.

On our 11-hour trip, we just trekked to Swamimalai Hill-top, had lunch and returned. If you leave early you can visit the Punganoor Lake, Nature Park and telescope observatory. There are a number of resorts and decent hotels to stay overnight if you want to spend more time.

19. Somnathapura and Talakadu – One Day trip from Bangalore

Unearthed temples and natural beauty of Talakadu - perfect temple day trip

Distance : 160km | Trekking, Nature, Adventure| Duration: 10 hours

Somnathapura and Talakadu are sites with a large number of ancient temples, but most importantly they are architectural hotspots near Bangalore which you would enjoy visiting irrespective of your faith.

In simple words, you can call this mini-Hampi which is accessible in one day trip.

Your first stop will be Keshava Temple in Somnathpura, an icon of the skills of Hoysala craftsmen. 24km from Somnathpur lies the mythical village of Talakadu, once known as the Benaras of the South.

Talakadu was a Hindu Pilgrimage site which went under dunes of sand few hundred years ago. More than architecture, the natural beauty and folklores are the highlights of Talakadu.

You can end your trip with a magical coracle ride in the serene waters of the Cauvery. The Talakadu Cauvery basin is a great place for a picnic near Bangalore. This is a great one-day outing in Bangalore.

Book a day tour of Talakadu and Somnathpur

If you love history and architecture and visiting Bangalore for the first time, I strongly recommend these guided day-tours for you.

  • Bangalore historic excursion
  • Day Trip to Shivanasamudra waterfalls and Somnathpura temples
  • Day trip to Belur, Hallebeedu, and Shravanabelagola

When in Horsley you can just soak yourself in the natural beauty of the place and once done, you can head to the Horsley Zoo which is home to some amazing wildlife.

Read about our trip to Horsley Hills from Bangalore .

20. Mysore Wildlife – Ranganathittu and Mysore Zoo

Mysore Zoo - one of the oldest and largest zoos in India

Distance: 165 km | Attractions: Wildlife Watching | Duration: 12 hours

Mysore is also the city famous for amazing natural beauty and wildlife. If you have kids, my bet is they will definitely enjoy this Mysore day trip more than the one above. Mysore Zoo is easily one of the best and largest zoo facilities in India. There are many cafes and parks in the zoo, and this is itself could be a great day trip from Bangalore.

However, I love to see the wild in the open, so my favorite is Ranganathittu wildlife sanctuary. Remember to carry your binoculars and a high-zoom camera to feast your eyes with the sight of colorful birds and capture them through your lens.

You can book a guided excursion to Mysore from Bangalore as well.

21. One day trip from Bangalore to BR Hills

Dence forest in the BR Hills - 1 Day outing from Bangalore

Distance: 178km | Attractions: Nature,Sightseeing | Duration: 12 hours

The BR hills are located at the border of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, in the Western Ghats. It is named after the Biligiriranga temple built atop the hill. It is an ecological hotspot with a large variety of wild beasts including sloth bear, antelopes, peafowls and even tigers.

These are not easy to catch a glimpse of though, as they are scattered all over the region. You can, however, see a lot of monkeys and birds in the picturesque wildlife sanctuary. The view from the hill is also a sight to behold.

It is on the same route as Shivanasamudra so you may try to club it with the same.

22. Mysore Iconic – Mysore Palace & Brindavan Gardens

Mysore Palace

Distance: 181 km | Things to do: Scenic drive, sightseeing, picnic| Duration: 15 hours

The cultural capital of Karnataka and the cleanest city of South India is not a place that you can explore in less than two days. The two iconic landmarks of Mysore are the Mysore Palace, the home to the Royal family of Mysore and the Vrindavan Gardens, one of Bollywood’s favorite Desi location.

In a round-trip spanning 12 hours, you can easily cover both these places even and even more. I highly recommend visiting the amazing sand sculpture museum in the city. Check out the best Mysore itinerary for different types of vacation.

Mysore is a beautiful city which needs more than a day to explore. Book this 2-day guided tour to experience the best of Mysore in 2 days.

Doable One Day trip over 200km from Bangalore

If you love long drives as much as we do, you may want to push your boundaries and drive over 400 km in a day. The excellent roads of national and state highways of Karnataka make such trips possible. Although I'd always recommend staying somewhere overnight, I'd say that it is doable in a day if you don't have another day to spare.

23. Shettihalli Church – Drowning monument

Shettihalli Church - One day Trips from Bangalore

Distance: 223 km | Attractions: Ruins,Nature| Duration: 9-10 hours

The Shettihalli Church is the ruins of a French Gothic church built in 1860, but the ruins have their own appeal. The Shettihalli Rosemary church is famously called the drowning church as it drowns under the Hemavathi river in monsoon and emerges back in the summer!

In 1960 the villages near the church were deserted due to the construction of the Gorur dam, and the church was left abandoned. The dilapidated roofless church has its own charm and has become a sought after location for photo-shoots, which make you wonder if the church in its former self-was as attractive as the site of ruins.

A peaceful area tucked away from the main city of Hassan, is an ideal place to relax, take a boat ride and watch the sunset. While the distance is more, the road is a breeze and the scenic trails make the drive worthwhile.

24. Temple Trails of Belur and Halebidu

Distance : 227 km | Attractions: Fort, Nature | Duration: 15 hours

The journey Belur and Halebidu takes you to the 12th century, during the peak of the Hoysala Empire. Start early in the morning to avoid traffic and reach the ancient capital located 220 KMs from Bangalore.

Your first stop is the Chennakesava Temple in Belur, a marvel that took over a hundred years to build.

The temple complex is a treasure trove of intricate carvings depicting animals, dancers, and episodes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

What sets these sculptures apart is that they're signed off by their creators, often with boastful epithets.

After quick lunch, head to Halebeedu, just 16 KMs from Belur. Here, you'll spend a couple of hours exploring two magnificent temples dedicated to Hoysalesvara and Shantalesvara.

25. One day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota

Distance : 285 km | Attractions: Fort, Nature | Duration: 15 hours

The last two in this list is for crazy road-trippers who can drive more than 600 km in a day. I recommend these for a one-day trip is due to the dearth of accommodation options nearby.

Gandikota is a village named after a 14th-century fort . The Gandikota fort, in turn, got its name from the giant gorge formed by the Pennar river cutting through the Erramala Hills . Its structure and beauty earn it the name Grand Canyon of India . It's one of the best places near Bangalore for a one day trip.

If you are into overnight camping you can spend a night at the campsite.

26. A one day trip from Bangalore to Belum Caves

Belum Caves - the longest one-day trip from Bangalore

Distance: 300km| Attractions: Ruins, Nature| Duration: 15 hours

Belum caves is a natural cave which is estimated to be millions of years old. There were many vessels and sculptures found inside the caves which date back to the ancient period.

It is the longest cave in the Indian sub-continent that is open to the public and is home to the mysterious Patalganga, a perennial water-flow inside the caves. You can club this with the Yaganti cave temples 44 km away or Gandikota which is slightly closer to Bangalore.

You can also explore Gandikota, Belum caves and other nearby attractions in Andhra Pradesh on a long weekend trip .

Well, these are my favorites among all the amazing places to visit near Bangalore on excursions. Before you leave, I want to share with you the best travel sites for bookings trips in India and seeking some travel inspirations as well.

Wow, I didn't know that southern India had such interesting landscapes. I already had plans to visit the northern part via motorbike, but now it makes me wonder if I should take a longer holiday and expand my trip 😀

Oh wow! I didn’t realize how much nature there is so close to the city!

Great post- I love posts that list day trips from a location. It feels like you can expand a visit to your original location and see so much more!!

Bangalore is one of the places that I wanna visit, and I liked your post a lot. Thank you I will take it as a guide

It’s funny. Your first sentence describes exactly what I used to think about Bangalore before reading your post! Thanks for educating me.

Wow That is crazy. I had no idea of these places. I would love to travel to India someday and discover all the great things the country has to offer.

Wow! I fell in love with your pictures of the waterfalls! Can't believe you can fit all these places in one day!

I will definitely use your post as a guide for when I get to Bangalore. These places looks amazing! Thanks for sharing 🙂

I have been to Bangalore once, with not with the right people, couldn't enjoy a lot! 🙁 I must return

So many places here I've never heard of. Definitely lots for me to discover in India, thanks for sharing some great ideas.

I am always shipping things to Bangalore for work. There is definitely a lot to see. Gandikota Is simply beautiful, would love to go there!

What a wonderful experience, Shettihalli Church was my favorite. A lot of fantastic places to see and explore. I would love to go soon!

Im in love with Shivanasamudra. those waterfalls look so beautiful! Ive heard about all the great places to visit but thanks to your pictures i can finally tell how stunning it is.

What a great list of places to visit from Bangalore. I really like to drowning church – that’s amazing how it floods and then is back to dry. And there are so many waterfalls! It’s a shame that some tourists have forced the closing of some of the close observation decks. The waterfalls are probably less muddy when it isn’t rainy season.

Thanks for sharing wonderful day trips from Bangalore. I would love to see 400 year old nearby Manchinbele Dam and the whole place looks beautiful. Good to know that famous Sholay was shot in Ramnagaram as I always thought it was shot in M.P.. All places look wonderful and worth visiting.

I am so glad your list doesn't feature Nandi Hills. Haha. Anyway, having stayed in bangalore for more than 5 years now, I have kind of ran out of destinations to visit in a day.

Loved this post so much! A great comprehensive review of some amazing places. I travelled to India last year but unfortunately didn't get to visit Bangalore. Definitely will be looking into returning 😀

I love the Falls and Lepakshi already. That statue and the footprint are just so unique and I'd love to know the story behind them. Lemme go Google…

Woah! Incredible list, Sinjana! Great work here. Gandikota, Hampi, and Lepakshi are on top of my to-do list but don't know when. Hopefully, soon.

Never thought Bangalore as diverse as this! Crazy how you have canyons, falls, amazing landscapes and architecture at the same place! Chunchi alone is enough to make me go there. I'm crazy about waterfalls lol

I haven't yet been to India, but every time I discover new things about it from travel blogs, it's yet another confirmation, another reason to move it up the bucket list 🙂

What an amazing list! I visited some of these places when I went to Bangalore and was surprised to find such amazing landscapes in South India.

I really want to travel through India more and more. Bangalore looks beautiful and so much culture as well. It's definitely on my bucketlist.

These are amazing day trip suggestions from Bengaluru. There is so much to be explored. Would love to rely on this post for weekend getaways and share with my friends in the city.

What a crazy collection of hikes and sites from Bangalore! I had no idea that there was so much so close. I think visiting Bannerghatta National Park and seeing Thottikallu falls would be the first up on my list!

I didn’t know that South India had such beautiful mountainesque landscapes the first time I visited. I went to Mysore and Gandikota and was absolutely awed. However, now I see that there are a few more places that I missed. Hopefully, I can make up for it during my next visit. Thank you for this amazing list, Sinjana!

Wow. Never knew there was so juicy to see around Bangalore. I have visited the city several times and always try and get away from the concrete jungle Done Mysore and other places. Would live to visit the waterfalls at chinchi and the Lepsshki. Thanks for sharing these offbeat places a short drive away.

his is a really handy post, as I have family working in Bangalore so could potentially do these trips during a visit. Am particularly drawn to the first place in your list, the Machinbele Dam and also the Big Banyan Tree on way back. All the rest of ideas also look great, such as Madhugiri and Lepakshi. Some of the others, perhaps we could do as part of a road trip, rather than there and back in a single day.

I had no idea there’s so much nature and hiking around Bangalore! i would honestly want to take almost all of these trips, which may require me to move to Bangalore for a year! The Hogenekkal Falls look incredible and like nothing I’ve seen before. If I could only pick one trip, that’s probably what I’d choose. Awesome list!

This is a fabulous list of “cliche” or typical tourist destination and those off the beaten path. I would love to visit Lepakshi and the Shettihalli Church. Both of these places look so massive and beautiful! I’m stunned just by your photos. Definitely will visit these destinations when exploring Bangalore.

Wow being the 4th largest tech hub, it’s pretty incredible how much nature there is here in Bangalore. I would love to visit the 400-year old Banyan Tree at Dodda Alada Mara. And wow the Belum Caves being millions years old sounds incredible – it’s incredible that it’s one of the longest that’s open to the public. I totally would love to visit this amazing work of nature.

I never imagined Bangalore with a good nature spots! Wow! I’m very amazed! It makes me want to go back again to India soon. Great sceneries! I want to put it in my travel list.

Chunchi Falls looks beautiful. And, the 400 year old Banyan Tree. As others have noted, I didn’t think of Bangalore for nature. And, I love caves so Belum is interesting.

This is a great post full of information. I could certainly base myself in Bangalore and visit some of the places your mentioned – especially the Forts which I love visiting and temples. I loved the way you broke it down with how far and how long. Really helps in the planning.

Avalabetta and Gudibande Fort and Belum Caves are my favorites. I have stayed in Bengaluru for like 8 years and been to many of these places, though at many instances, I have spent more than 1 day there. However, this is totally apt for the people who work in Bengaluru offices. They will have great options to visit so many new places over the weekends. I am sure this list is going to be really helpful to them.

Dude, there are so many fun day trips to take near Bangalore! And the variety of different attractions is staggering. I would love to visit Shivanasamudra. I can’t believe those falls! I haven’t been here before and would love to discover all of these places!

You have been on so many amazing day trips in your new(ish) home – it’s inspiring me to explore my state of New York and all of the nature around it even more 🙂 Your pictures are also AMAZING, especially of the waterfalls. It sort of reminded me a bit of my trip to Iceland! Having never been to India before I think I mainly associated it with more urban areas, but these hikes (and particularly the “Grand Canyon”) were so beautiful to see!

Thanks Lauren. There are just innumerable places to get close to nature near Bangalore. India is full of surprises 🙂

Mandagiri looks like my favourite of these. Then again Mysore Palace looks pretty damn cool too. In fact, I want to do them all!

I love lists like this one. There are so many things to do even on a day trip close to almost every city. I have never been to Bangalore, but when I go, this list will be my go-to-guide for my day trips.

This is such a thorough and helpful guide for any one visiting India. I never knew there are so many beautiful places near to Bangalore. This itinerary will be very useful to me when I visit India. Thank you for such a great post.

Thanks for sharing. It was useful and informative.

Shivanasamudra looks so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for reading

Now I have new places to add to my bucket list… thank you!

Thanks Kristin!

Top 5 airlines flying to India

Emirates is good airlines. But there plane seats were very small and congested. Need to little good and big seats in economy class.

Meals were delicious, however I got hungry between dinner and breakfast.

Very good!! If at all, the business class chair/bed was bit small!! It’s because of older plane- as was told!

Very good ..nice comfort..crew service was good..and no delays in time ..they always on time..

We did not fly and our agent has been uncilling and uncooperative to help us rebook flight. We will never use Kayak ever again to book our flights, and we will let our network of friends know that using Kayak is equal to losing $$$$$.

The experience of the flight. The food options have definitely gone down

I am vegan. The food was balanced, tasty and enough. I enjoyed the ride. The crew was very friendly and went out of their way to please the passengers.

Food service must be faster and make vegetarian food in good quality

On time take off and early arrival, what else can one want

My last few flights with Emirates have always been delayed at least a half an hour. When my layover is only an hour and a half to two hours, 30 minutes makes a big difference. I’m going to check out other airlines.

Check in desk people constrained by fear. Obvious typo on Uganda visa, even though approved, caused loss of flight. Something is definitely wrong with this system.

Being a platinum member, no attention given. No towel or tissue provided.

Between Air India and Qatar my luggage was lost for three days. I eventually found my own luggage location using the Apple Air Tag. Air India used a paper form to report my lost luggage. I could never get past getting past luggage personnel with my report number before they would hang up on me. Only after them specifically telling Air India at Chandigarh airport where my luggage was located which was right under their noses did they react. After three days I finally received my luggage. The Air India luggage folks didn’t seem proactive in finding the luggage’s rightful owner.

Besides the flight cancellation, everything else was prefect. Kudos to Malaysian Airlines.

Operated by American Airlines. Very chaotic and the crew was bit rough responding any enquiries. Restricted leg space.. Qatar would have been better

No towels or tissue and chocolate and mint provided before arrival

Qatar airways from Doha to guangzhau was excellent big bird Boeing 777 more room and smoothly flight, I Love it

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

They made us deliberate waste time by holding our passports and boarding passes making us miss the flight

The made us waiting and held our passports and boarding pass making us miss our flights

Only 1 time food and drinks together was offered, for total 5 hours duration drinks and snacks was never offered. For some people food choice was not available, only veg was available. No entertainment option was there. Crew members were mostly back of the flight asking each other for KitKat and chips to share between them.

Etihad flight sector is a local . .give the same quality upto destination

Long way to improve. Toilets not working. Bad handling when flight was canceled

Lovely crew - comfortable journey despite it being an older plane.

1st time with. Etihad Airways and it was amazing from check in to crew. Great flight.

It has been a couple of years since I flew with Etihad last, after having a unpleasant experience with them coming out of the pandemic. I can say that the experience has uplifted, but I can’t really rate the service. At Barcelona airport the service was great, with their dedicated Etihad staff very helpful. The onboard experience wasn’t great, not very personalised and it really makes sense why Etihad doesn’t feature in the top 10 2023 Skytrax awards. The crew just seemed to be inattentive and almost absent from the cabin. I felt that I had to keep getting their attention. Even after I’d finished my meal, an hour went by before I had to call them to clear the tray/plate etc.

One thing is very important is you people not giving seat arrangement together to couple, senior citizen. You have to take care of senior citizen. Do not look about money. Money is not important everywhere. Make relationship strong is very very important. I like Etiyad air line out of all air line. Food was hot and delicious. Air hostess gave very good service, nice attitude, very good behaviour. I gave 10 out of 10 marks. Thanks Jivraj

Entertainment did not work from flight from Abu Dhabi to Kolkata. Emirates has a much better flight in that sector.

Ripped off and broken seats in Business class. Seats stink and need to request the staff for additional bedsheets. Crew if very friendly though

Food was very good. Again tray could use a non-skid mat. I had a regular seat - comfortable - able to sleep undisturbed. Boarding was uneventful.

Be on time. Constant delays, missed connections. No excuses. Weather was not an issue

Solid old-school airline, comfortable, efficient and pleasant. It's the small things like nice blankets, good legroom and complementary mixed drinks, even in economy class. Can recommend!

I am deeply disappointed with Lufthansa’s treatment of my elderly parents during their recent flight. They were supposed to receive assistance with wheelchair service, but the experience was nothing short of a nightmare. Upon arriving at the airport, my parents were left stranded and confused, with no staff available to guide them. Despite being promised help, they were ignored by the ground staff, who were not only indifferent but also incredibly rude. To make matters worse, some of the employees made racist comments, which is absolutely unacceptable especially for passengers with special needs. We will never fly Lufthansa again and urge others to reconsider if they need assistance. My parents were left to navigate a busy airport on their own, which is both dangerous and stressful for elderly passengers with limited mobility. This level of neglect is inexcusable, especially from an airline that claims to prioritize passenger safety and comfort.

Because of a thunder storm in JAX we spent more than an hour on the run way in the aircraft. The crew did not even offered water to passengers.

My connecting flight was cancelled then delayed for four and a half hours with a €20 voucher for my trouble. I think that is an awful apology because the next flight they put me on was horrible. It was overbooked, the flight attendants were of absolutely zero assistance (embarrassing actually) and the transportation shuttle to the plane was as hot as a sauna. Terrible!

Terrible. Had to go through customs and pick up our luggage. Then they said we couldn't make our connecting flight to MKE when we had 35min before takeoff. There were no other flights out on any airline so we would've had to spend the night at ORD. We were able to get a ride to MKE at our expense instead. Ridiculous that they would not allow us to try to make the flight, which we would have. Assuming rechecking the luggage was the problem. They should not have listed this as a viable connecting flight if there was no chance in making it. There was 4 people in our party.

Smooth flight. Safe airline. Professional crew. Glitchy entertainment touch screen. So-so food. So-so seat padding.

Biggest gripes were that the seats were extra narrow as the 4-in-the-middle taper down. As with most flight, too little leg room hurts my aging hips. Also changing the flight time to 3 hours earlier meant that we had a terribly long lay-over in one of the world's most boring airports

I missed it , and waiting for next flight when writing.

Boing 747-8’s are showing their age. The seat back screens are somewhat unresponsive. Even putting the seat “in its original and upright position” required assistance from the guy behind me-after I helped the lady in front of me! I left a ball cap on board. I’ll be flying back in four weeks. I wonder if Lufthansa has a list a found for that kind of stuff in Frankfurt?

First and the foremost I was shocked to see airindia standards have come down so low . The food was horrible . They served us 3 meals for vegetarian and all the was paneer . The orange juice was not at all cold it was smelly . After you take this heavy price air India should learn from other air lines . I at one point felt like throwing up . After all this when we landed we were not given landing slip . We had to wait for 45 min at the immigration just because no one was given landing slip . To top it all we were 3 passengers and had checked in 4 check in luggage . Out of which 3 have not yet arrived . Basically status says the loaded it in our flight ( this was a direct fight ) and it never reached . We are still waiting . There is nothing great to tell about our flight . The he only good thing was the crew were very helpful .

Lay out shows 1st row and second row given after taking payment. It's a fraud

The seats were extremely uncomfortable. Air India seats used to be very comfortable . with sufficient legroom. In this aircraft there was no legroom. It is a shame that for your profit margins you are trying to pack people like cattle on these long haul flights. The food was terrible. The bread was hard like a rock. Mr CEO of Air India, why don’t you take a flight in economy from India to USA and experience the hardships first hand. It is utter disgrace

Absolutely nothing. Cold and unpleasant airline staff, and to top it all, the entertainment system was broken. Really harrowing experience.

BAD experience. Entertainment system was not working and most of the passengers had this issue. Staff was not helpful. Meal was yuck. Bad old flights.

Overall good experience. I got first row seats with extra legroom. It does make a difference. Entertainment system was working. However, they kept serving me a VEGAN meal instead of a VEGETERIAN meal. I asked them and showed my tickets that Vegeterian meal is selected but the staff didn't care. VEGAN meal was medicore and not enough to fill tummy. Also unhealthy with butter made from palm oil.

Communication was terrible. Flight was delayed for 4-5 hours in DC (on the front end, and also after we boarded, we had to get off - some issue with fueling the old plane correctly). There was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Once we reach Delhi airspace, apparently there was weather that caused us not to land - we were actually near the ground, saw the run way, and lifted back up to the sky after being sooo close. Then we circled for about 30 minutes, and they decided to go to Jaipur to land until the weather cleared and to refuel. Again, once we landed in Jaipur (wrong city), there was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Then we heard that the crew was reaching their 24 hours. We sat on the place, on the tarmac for another 3 HOURS, with no food and not enough water for everyone on the flight. Then, they kicked us off the plane with no plan, in the wrong city. We went thru customs, got our bags (thank goodness), and had to ask a bunch of staff what was happening and what to do. Eventually, their soltuion was to bus people back to Delhi (like 6 hours we were told) but not everyone would fit on the bus, and unknown timing on when it would leave. At this point it was 9PM (we were scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 11AM...). My husband and I decided to risk it and take a cab that we had to pay ourselves (about $200 US dollars) to get to Delhi (about 5 hour drive). We both had terrible trips back to the US as well - almost missed connecting flight, forced to pay for carry-on luggage (a small back pack!) and duty-free goods by the Air India staff last minute. Just terrible experience all around. Never again with AI! The ONLY good thing was the air hostesses were kind and patient - example: they made sure people with food allergies got their correct.

It would have been perfect if there was onboard entertainment.

Food was unfit even for prisoners. larger front seats are terribly uncomfortable, which is ironic. Thorough need to upgrade aircraft on such a long route.

Food could be better they need a better caterer in DC flight from India always has better food

Mekedatu Falls - 90 km from Bangalore

Mekedatu Falls - 90 km from Bangalore

For a one day trip around Bangalore, Mekedaatu falls are a great option to explore if waterfalls and natural scenes are up your alley. Mekedaatu, or 'goat's leap' in Kannada, is a charming location along Kaveri in the rural parts of Bangalore.

The confluence of Rivers Kaveri and Arkavati takes place at the Sangama area and 3.5 kms downstream from there, the river Kaveri flows through a very deep and narrow ravine of hard granite rock.

The river, which is more than 150 meters wide at the meeting point (at Sangama) flows through the barely 10-meter-wide gorge at Mekedatu. As per local legend, a goat being chased by a tiger managed to cross over the raging river by leaping across the gorge and saved its life in the process – thus giving rise to the name ‘goat’s leap’.

Approaching the spot, one can see the magnificent flow of all the water as it roars down the ravine. However, one must tread cautiously in this region as the rocks are deceptively slippery and the water below is deep.

The Highlights of South India

  • Travel is the movement of people between relatively distant geographical locations, and can involve travel by foot, bicycle, automobile, train, boat, bus, airplane, or other means, with or without luggage, and can be one way or round trip. Travel can also include relatively short stays between successive movements.
  • The origin of the word “travel” is most likely lost to history. The term “travel” may originate from the Old French word travail, which means ‘work’. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the first known use of the word travel was in the 14th century.
  • It also states that the word comes from Middle English travailen, travelen (which means to torment, labor, strive, journey) and earlier from Old French travailler (which means to work strenuously, toil). In English we still occasionally use the words “travail”, which means struggle. According to Simon Winchester in his book The Best Travelers’ Tales (2004), the words “travel” and “travail” both share an even more ancient root: a Roman instrument of torture called the tripalium (in Latin it means “three stakes”, as in to impale).

India reviews & ratings, why travelstride, additional details, what you should know before going on a india tour, best time to visit india.

The best time to visit India is between October and March. Winters are generally very pleasant, but keep in mind that this means the country is packed with tourists during the winter.

Summers in India can get unbearably hot, and monsoons drench the country in rain from June to September. That said, visitors to India during or right after monsoon season can experience the beautiful green countryside, many areas of which are brown and dry most months of the year.

Currency in India

The official currency in India is the Rupee . Visitors are not allowed to bring any amount of Indian currency into India, so bring cash, checks, and/or a credit card to exchange or withdraw currency upon arrival. Many vendors in India will not accept credit or debit cards, so it will be useful to carry small amounts of cash.

What languages are spoken in India?

India has 22 official languages, and each of the 29 states in India has an official language. Hindi is the most common language spoken, and English is the second most common. Many Indians can speak two or more languages fluently, and most people that you interact with in the hospitality industry will speak English.

Packing list for India

What you bring on your trip to India will depend on the season and itinerary of your trip. However, there are a few items that are recommended for any India tour:

  • Modest clothing - Clothing in India tends to be modest. Women should bring long skirts and shawls to cover their shoulders, especially when visiting holy sites.
  • A traveler’s wallet and/or passport holder - Pickpocketing and theft is common in many of the crowded cities, so keeping cash and other valuables in a traveler’s wallet (theft-safe wallet that you can keep under your clothes) may help protect your belongings.
  • Sturdy walking shoes - Public transportation in most parts of India is lacking, so you will likely do a lot of walking.
  • Prescriptions, contacts, and other necessities - Although bodegas and drugstores are common in the major cities, they may not carry the same products that you find at home.
  • Mosquito nets - Mosquitos are common in India, especially during the monsoon season.

Make sure to leave some room in your suitcase-- India is well-known for its clothing industry, and even the street markets tend to offer high-quality items.

Popular India tour routes

Many tours will take travelers through the cities of Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, and Jaipur. New Delhi has the largest airport in India, so most tours will begin and end there. Tours using private buses or cars for transportation will likely visit smaller villages and areas in the countryside, while tours that rely on public transportation tend to stick to the major cities.

Cruises along the Ganges River give travelers opportunities to visit small towns and villages that other tours generally do not visit. The river runs through the cities of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), Varanasi, and Kanpur, among others. Many cruises begin near New Delhi and end at Kolkata.

Qantas discounts 1 million seats in wake of dire year for small Aussie airlines

Qantas’s competitors are dropping like flies, and amid the carnage the national carrier has announced a massive sale.

Qantas says it is cutting prices on one million tickets in a seven-day sale.

The sale began on Monday, and applies for some one-way fares on 85 routes that depart between October 2024 and July 2025.

A spokesperson says there are discounts of up to 30 per cent.

Fares to major routes such as Melbourne to Sydney are going for $129 and Gold Coast to Sydney for $109. Key tourism routes like Brisbane to Proserpine and Albury to Brisbane are also discounted.

In announcing Monday’s sale, Qantas spruiked the latest airline scorecard results, showing the airline was the best in July when it came to departing on time; 74.1 per cent of the time wheels left tarmac when they were supposed to, ahead of 73 per cent at Virgin.

The major CrowdStrike outage affecting Microsoft systems in mid-July hurt businesses in most fields around the world.

Qantas has tumbled down the World Airline Award rankings of late, though.

The Flying Kangaroo has gone from fifth to 17th and now 24th in the past three years.

The international airline awards, announced in June, demoted Virgin Australia from 46th to 54th, and Qantas subsidiary Jetstar fell from 69th to 74th.

In February, new Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson announced a half-year pre-tax $1.25bn profit, a 13 per cent decline on the corresponding result 12 months earlier.

It has been a tumultuous year in Australian airline boardrooms.

Bonza went into voluntary administration in April, less than 18 months after its inaugural flight.

It has now come to light 60,000 customers are out of pocket, plus 323 staff are owed wages and annual leave, while 120 trade creditors have been short-changed.

On July 30, Rex went into voluntary administration, cancelling flights between the major cities, though regional routes are still flying.

Qantas and Virgin have offered to accommodate passengers with defunct Rex tickets without charging any additional fees.

Last week, the Rex administrators applied to the Federal Court to have the sale deadline pushed out to November.

The budget airline has launched a major sale on domestic and international fares, with flights to one Aussie hotspot starting from just $34.

Virgin flights to some of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations have been slashed to as little as $45 as part of a flash sale.

Millions of Australians are set to save as public transport fees on buses, trains, trams, ferries and airport trains are slashed.
