Your options to access the internet and wifi in Italy

First you need to assess what you need phone data for, when you need to access it and how much you think you will use. This is going to depend on how much you rely on or need apps, social media and email. 

Here is a quick guide to help you assess your usage:

Do I need local and international calls and text messaging?

Most SIM card providers will package up local and international calls plus SMS or text messaging into their offer but in reality you may not need this at all. 

The best way to communicate with family and friends at home when abroad are with wifi based apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Skype. Just make sure everyone is connected before you depart. 

Italians love to communicate on WhatsApp. If you are renting apartments on AirBnB or other booking sites, it is most likely that the owners will prefer that you contact them with WhatsApp. The same goes for tour operators. 

So unless you want to talk on a landline then you are unlikely to use much of this allowance.

Families and group travel

If you are traveling as a family or as part of a bigger group, have a think about how many devices need to be connected with mobile data.

The best solution for a group of two or more may be a portable wifi device that offers unlimited daily data rather than separate SIM cards.

Here are the main options for accessing the internet while you are in Italy. Chances are you will use a combination of these options so it is good to know what is available before you arrive.

Use your hotel or accommodation wifi and free wifi hotspots

For those that use minimal data and do not need their device for navigation or communication, the cheapest and easiest way to use your phone Italy is to connect to your hotel or accommodation wifi. Speeds are probably not as high as you experience in your country but for minimal data usage it is fine.

You can also try to use free wifi hotspots around Italy but be aware that they are not as common as in the US, UK or Australia. You will need to register and speeds are likely to be slow if you can connect at all

Do not expect to find free wifi in cafes or restaurants either. Italians have not adopted an “always on” culture and prefer to keep their eating and drinking establishments for meals and talking to one another.

Buy or rent a portable wifi device

Top tip – set up your portable wifi device before you depart on your trip and before heading out for the day so you know everything is working fine. And always remember to turn off global roaming on your phone if you want to avoid huge charges

Use your carrier’s international day pass

Telecommunications companies from around the world now offer international day passes to their customers who want the convenience of keeping their phone and number while traveling. 

You will need to sign up to the plan separately to your existing contract and additional fees will be triggered against your account when you land in Italy or international destination. The pass will renew after 24 hours until you return home and connect to your standard network.

There is no doubt that this option is convenient however it is an expensive approach when you calculate the length of your trip and data usage. They are best suited to shorter trips and for those that want a simple back up solution (albeit an expensive one).

Buy a prepaid SIM in Italy

There are four different cellular or mobile networks in Italy, TIM, Vodafone, 3, and Wind. TIM Mobile and Vodafone offer the best prepaid SIM options for tourists visiting Italy.

This is a great low cost option if you are happy to swap out your usual SIM or a have a spare GSM enabled smartphone you can use. You will need to spend some time setting this up when you arrive by presenting your passport at a local outlet.

Above all, turn off international roaming on your phone prior to departure if you have not purchased an international day pass. The last thing you want is to be accruing huge costs for data and phone usage before your vacation even begins.

Manage your apps

Before you leave for Italy, spend a little time reviewing which of your apps are using the most data. In general, social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as well as entertainment or streaming apps like YouTube and Spotify use lots of data. The same goes for Google Maps and Uber and fitness apps. You can restrict the access your phone has to data for those apps – directions for both iPhone and Android here .

Your device may use data in the background, even when you’re not actively using it. To reduce your background data, you can try switching off automatic:

• App updates
• File transfers
• Email refresh and attachment downloads

Next set up Google Maps and Google Translate to work offline before you leave (best to do this over wifi)

• Google Maps – search for the area you want to save eg Rome. Now zoom out to show the whole city or area. At the bottom of the screen, tap where it says the area name (Rome” in our example). Then click “Download” on the new screen. 
• Google Translate – go to offline translation and download Italian as well as English 

How to avoid international roaming charges on calls and text

We use the following apps to communicate with family and friends at home when we are in Italy. As we mentioned above, your accommodation is likely to have decent wifi so you can use these apps over that connection instead of your mobile plan.

• WhatsApp – for text, voice and video calls
• FaceTime – video calls between Apple devices
• Facebook Messenger – instead of text
• Skype – when the other two aren’t working

In the unlikely event of an emergency you can always send a quick text before you can reach a location where you can access wifi such as your hotel.

Disconnect (a little)

Remember to put the phone away and spend time just soaking up the incredible atmosphere. Who knows when you’ll be back in Italy again.

How to Get Wifi in Italy – 6 Strategies (and a Secret!)

Are you wondering how to get wifi in Italy? Here we share our favourite strategies with you, including our very own special trick to get cheap unlimited connection (pretty much) anywhere in the world!

Picture this. You’re planning to travel to Italy – for a quick jaunt to Florence or Milan , or for a longer trip around the country by train . Maybe you’re planning to travel by train all over Europe , covering different countries. Or perhaps you’re a digital nomad, wanting to spend some time in one of Italy’s quaint towns and villages . By the way, have you ever heard of Vico del Gargano ?

Whatever your plan is, I’m sure you’ll be wondering how to get wifi in Italy . To be honest, how to get wifi in [enter destination] is one of the first things I Google once I decide to go somewhere. Blame it on being a blogger, a digital nomad, and (almost) a millennial – I can go a few days without connection, but any longer than that drives me insane.

Since I spent so much time looking at how to get connection in other countries, I thought I should help those who travel to my country. So, I’ve decided to put together this simple guide on how to stay connected in Italy , covering the most common ‘strategies’ – including using a portable wifi in Europe , our favourite trick to get reliable, unlimited and affordable wifi connection!

5 Ways to Get Wifi in Italy

1) wifi in your hotel/hostel/apartment.

Sure, you can always use free wifi at your accommodation. Most hotels, hostels and apartment rentals in Italy will include free wifi – at least in major cities.

But. There is a but. First of all, having wifi in your hotel doesn’t help when you’re out! Unless you plan exactly where to go before you leave for the day and get all info saved up on your phone, or use paper maps and guidebooks (does anyone still do that?), relying on hotel wifi is not enough.

On top of that, I nternet speed in Italy is amongst the slowest in Europe , with an average speed of 8.5Mbit/s in download and 2.0Mbit/s in upload. Less than 1% of the population has access to fibre optic connection, and more often than not in hotels, one modem is shared among all guests.

Do you know what that means? SLOW. Yes, that’s right. Hotel wifi is good to check WhatsApp, update Insta and not much else. If you need to stream, download attachments, do live videos, or Skype calls… Forget it.

2) Wifi in Restaurants/Cafés

Hipsters and proper millennials will hate me for this. Italy doesn’t really have many ‘grammable cafés where you can spend a day tapping away on your Mac. There are some in Milan and in the other major cities, but generally speaking coffee in Italy is a grab and go kind of business. As a result, you can’t really rely on cafés to get wifi in Italy – especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time away from cities.

Same goes for restaurants. Some restaurants will have wifi, but not all, and definitely not in the countryside and in villages. Besides, if you were to rely on cafés and restaurants to get your Internet fix, it would probably end up costing you a lot (both in terms of time and money)! So, let’s move on and examine other alternatives.

3) Wifi in Coworking Spaces

Coworking spaces are on the rise in Italy – but once again, they are few and far between outside of the main cities. The upside is that coworking spaces usually have excellent wifi connection, but they are usually quite pricey – usually between €25 and €35 a day. So they could be an alternative for digital nomads, but not really for travellers.

4) Free City Wifi

Many cities in Italy also offer free wifi connection sponsored by the local municipality in various ‘hotspot’ locations around town. For example, Milan offers a free public wifi network named ‘Open Wifi Milano’ – you need to register, then you can enjoy free connection in over 1000 locations around town.

Sounds great, right? Are you thinking you may well stop reading now? Well, free city wifi sounds very good in theory – but it rarely works. Sometimes it’s hard to register, hard to connect, and once you are connected you’ll find yourself browsing at 1996-like speed.

5) Get Your Own SIM Card

Naturally, the easiest thing to do to stay connected in Italy would be getting your own SIM card and use your phone as a hotspot.

Easiest, you say? Enter Italian bureaucracy. Getting an Italian SIM is no walk in the park! First of all, you need to get to an official phone company retailer – newsagents and tobacconists won’t do. Luckily, there are many phone retailers at airports and stations, as well as on the high street of major cities.

You’ll also need to have identification with you , and you’ll be asked to enter your ‘codice fiscale’. This is basically the Italian version of a national insurance or social security number, and it’s determined by an algorithm. Phone store sellers should be able to help you with that, provided they speak English. They should also be able to help you select a data plan that suits your needs – IF they speak English.

TIM and Vodafone are the two most reliable phone operators , and they both offer pretty good deals to visitors – TIM for Visitors , including 4GB for €30, and Vodafone Holiday , including 2GB for €30.

To sum up, getting a SIM card in Italy is definitely convenient, but it can also be a pain, especially if you’re not in one of the main cities. We recommend getting an Italian SIM card if you’re planning to spend a good amount of time in Italy (say three weeks or so). Otherwise, read on!

5) Pocket Wifi in Italy

When traveling in Italy, you must have a means to connect to the internet. Whether it’s looking for directions in Venice (you’ll need them), booking a restaurant in Rome, or contacting your Airbnb in Milan, it pays to have a fast and stable internet connection.

There are multiple ways to stay connected while you travel through Italy and enjoy the Dolce Vita. Each option has pros and cons.

When travelers say WiFi, they’re talking about a data connection. This allows you to browse the internet, send messages, and call over services like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Viber, FaceTime, and Telegram.

A data connection can also let you stream videos while relaxing at your accommodation, get directions and view maps, and even back up all your lovely vacation photos to the cloud. Trust us, with beautiful sites like St. Mark’s Square, the Colosseum in Rome, Florence Cathedral, or the colored houses lining the bays in Cinque Terre, you’ll want to get your photos backed up as soon as possible!

Most tourists will choose to rent a pocket WiFi because it’s the best option in terms of price and connectivity, it’s still worth seeing the other options because no two tourists are alike.

So which solution should you use to connect to the internet as you travel through “the boot”?

Pocket WiFi is a small portable device that provides a WiFi hotspot for users to connect their devices to the internet.

The Pocket WiFi device connects to a mobile data connection and then creates a WiFi hotspot to which all compatible devices can connect.

Devices like smartphones, tablets, etc., can all connect to a pocket WiFi device, and many pocket WiFi devices allow up to 10 simultaneous connections.

Pocket WiFi allows multiple devices to connect at once. All your travel companions can access the internet, which keeps everybody happy. The device is small, so you won’t have to drain your smartphone battery by tethering other devices.

A SIM card is a tiny card with a chip. They’ve been used for years in phones and mobile devices to connect to mobile networks. Your SIM card allows you to make calls, receive messages, and browse the internet, and it’s also associated with your phone number.

You can also browse the internet in Italy using an Italian SIM card from local or international operators.

For this solution, you put the new SIM card into your smartphone or tablet and can then start browsing the internet.

With a dedicated SIM card , you won’t need an extra device. Just put the SIM card into your device and start browsing.

With a data SIM card for Italy, you may need to remove your everyday SIM card if your device only has one slot. This means you won’t be reachable via your usual phone number.

If you need WiFi throughout Europe , remember that prepaid SIM cards don’t function across several countries.

SIM cards within Italy range from €8 for 3GB in a week to €25 for 50GB. You can use Europe-wide providers for SIM cards or opt for one of Italy’s more popular domestic mobile carriers, such as TIM, Iliad, Wind, Vodafone, or Three.

You can buy travel SIM cards from:

• Phone stores: Phone retailers and specific network stores, like TIM, Vodafone, Wind, etc.
• Airports: Be careful, as some of these can be very expensive.
• Online: This is typically the best option, as you can compare prices and services before buying.

An eSIM card provides the same options as a SIM card, but instead of physically inserting one, eSIM cards are simply set up through the device itself.

Like a SIM card, an eSIM card doesn’t require an additional device or physical SIM card.

This also means it doesn’t have the disadvantage of replacing your other SIM, as compatible devices will have another eSIM set up for their domestic carrier.

eSIM cards are only available for more modern devices that support eSIM. Check first that your device is eSIM compatible before buying an eSIM to travel in Italy.

An eSIM isn’t a great option for tourists looking to access the Internet via a laptop, computer, or tablet, either. They’ll need to tether their internet connection from their phone, which is typically slower and will drain their battery.

As pocket WiFi devices tend to have better antennae than cellphones, SIM cards and eSIM cards won’t likely provide as good connections in more rural areas like the Dolomites and the remote yet beautiful areas of Sicily and Calabria.

Unlimited data eSIM cards for Italy cost around €19 for five days or €27 for a week. Typically, the longer you have your SIM card, the less you’ll pay per day.

Your domestic carrier may also provide international data roaming for Italy. You won’t need a new SIM or a pocket WiFI device in this case.

Data roaming can be set up directly through your domestic carrier and even once you arrive in Italy. When you arrive in Italy, your carrier usually sends you a message telling you how to do so.

Data roaming is notoriously expensive, even more so if you have yet to contract a data roaming service before you arrive at your destination.

The exact cost depends on your carrier and the services you have contracted. However, some users have spent thousands on unexpected roaming costs!

You could always travel to Italy without an international data solution and rely on free WiFi hotspots in cafés, public squares, etc.

The most significant advantage of free WiFi is that you don’t have to pay anything. You also won’t need an extra device like pocket WiFi or an additional SIM card.

The downside to free WiFi is that the networks may be unsecured or even a scam. You can’t guarantee that public networks are safe, and in popular tourist destinations, scammers have even set up fake networks to steal personal data from unsuspecting tourists.

You can’t guarantee a public WiFi network’s speed or connection quality, which may result in a slow connection, especially if many others are using the same connection simultaneously.

As the name suggests, free WiFi doesn’t cost anything. However, some “free” networks may limit how long you can use them or even require you to provide an email address or sign up for a mailing list to use them.

How you choose the best WiFi option for a trip to Italy will depend on how you intend to use it. Here are just some of the factors you need to consider.

Different solutions come with differing associated costs depending on how long you intend to use them.

Solutions become cheaper over more extended periods. Always check the prices for the exact amount of time you’ll be using the service.

You’ll see that the prices initially advertised for pocket WiFi, SIM cards, eSIM cards, and roaming options are the least you’ll pay over more extended visits to Italy. For short trips, your daily fees may be more than quoted.

The connection type and speed will also affect the cost. 4G connections are typically cheaper than the faster (around 100x) 5G connections.

For casual users looking to browse the internet, check messages, or get directions to the Trevi Fountain, 4G network connections will likely be fast enough.

5G connections are recommended for business users or those looking to send larger files or stream high-quality video.

Some solutions have a data limit, while others offer “unlimited” data. Generally, the unlimited options are more expensive and have some caveats or “fair use” policies.

Checking your typical mobile data usage helps determine whether you have enough data. You can do this on your smartphone to give you an idea of how much data you’ll need. Remember that your typical data usage mightn’t be the same while traveling around Italy.

After all, you may use maps more often if you get lost roaming Venice’s tiny streets or through lots of data FaceTiming friends and loved ones from Vatican City!

Nowadays, having an internet connection has become increasingly important and when travelling it is fundamental to stay connected on your phone at all times, as having wifi can improve the quality of your trip.

Although most hotels and accommodations in Italy have wifi, having access to the internet anywhere is a great perk during your travels. You can read and send emails, text and call people with WhatsApp, use Google Maps to avoid getting lost and share your experiences with Facebook.

YOUR MOBILE PROVIDER VS ITALY’S

Typically, phone companies in the United Kingdom and United States offer expensive plans for tourists traveling abroad. They last for a week or two and offer a very limited amount of data. Buying an Italian SIM is fairly cheap and provides a great internet connection at an inexpensive price.

Italian mobile providers always offered lower prices for tourists than the American and British ones. However, in 2018 a new internet provider, Iliad, released a plan so cheap that the other Italian internet providers had to lower their prices in order to compete.

CAN A FOREIGN TOURIST BUY AN ITALIAN SIM?

Yes! And it’s actually fairly simple to buy an Italian SIM too. Bring your wallet and passport to the store of the mobile provider of your choice. Simply purchase the SIM card and put it in your phone. It will be activated within a few hours and you will have access to the service.

HOW CAN I BUY AND USE AN ITALIAN SIM?

Step 1 : Your phone needs to be unlocked

You can put an Italian SIM in your phone even if it was bought in another country. However, first you have to make sure that your phone is unlocked for international use. If your phone isn’t unlocked, you will get an error after you change to the Italian SIM and you won’t be allowed to use your device. Therefore, call the phone company and ask them to unlock your phone; make sure you have your account information ready. Some companies allow you to sign in online to unlock your phone. Either way, this process is really simple; just make sure you do it about a week before your trip. Don’t wait until the night before. If you have to do it online sometimes it may take a little more time.

If you do forget to unlock your phone before coming to Italy, you can always purchase a wifi hot-spot. These are more expensive and require you to carry a small router with you to connect your phone to the router’s wifi. It’s a bit troublesome because you will have to carry the router around and turn it on and off when you need to use it. However, if you don’t unlock your phone and can’t use an Italian SIM, this is also a good option to keep you connected during your trip.

Step 2 : Decide which service to use

Okay, we’re going to pretend you already have your unlocked phone. Let’s talk about the options. The previously mentioned Iliad , as well as Ho-mobile , offer the least expensive plans. Ho is a bit older and is owned by Vodafone, an older company with a great reputation in terms of service. It uses the Vodafone network and so has better coverage but overall both Ho and Iliad are great options. Ho is €10/month for unlimited calls and SMS with 50GB of internet.

Iliad offers the same service for €8/month (prices as of 2018). Both require a €10 one-time signup fee. So, if you’re going to stay in Italy for a week or a few weeks, these options will be around 18 to 20 euro for plenty of internet access and unlimited calls/text messages. You can purchase both of these services online. Head to a shop and your service will be active within a few hours. Don’t forget to bring your passport! When you leave Italy or decide you no longer want the service, just stop paying to cancel it.

It literally took me several years, many phone calls, a google search for legal advice and a couple of registered letters to figure out internet contracts in Italy.

While Wi-Fi coverage is growing in the bel paese, it does not come close to matching the easy connectivity you can find in countries like the US or the UK. In fact, 40% of Italians never use the internet at all , which drives down demand for internet in cozy cafes.

I don’t understand the benefit of this device over a cell phone equipped with an Italian SIM card. Am I missing something? Last winter I was paying about €16 per month for a SIM with plenty of data for my needs. I could also use my cell phone as a hot-spot when I wasn’t near a wifi connection. Thanks

Your Italian SIM card most likely has a traffic limit, while this comes with “unrestricted bandwidth”. From their FAQ page: — How long can I navigate? You can enjoy unlimited data during your entire rental. This means you can always stay connected and surf without bandwidth throttling or traffic shaping. — Basically you could stream Netflix movies if you wanted to, without worrying about any traffic charges.

Italy is still lagging behind in Internet connectivity, so any addition like this one is welcomed.

Perfect timing. Going to Italy in less then 2 weeks and was going to get a Sim card but if there’s no WiFi around this might be better.

If you have a smart phone or tablet with SIM card on the U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless, then for an extra $10/day you can use your domestic data plan internationally. For a price comparison, I have found this cheaper than purchasing an Italian/European 4G SIM (and only slightly more than a 3G SIM with very limited data caps). Additionally, if you have a large data plan or unlimited data plan, then you may find it totally worth the costs.

The only way to spent 4/5 $ without “thinks” or surprise is to acquire a pocket wifi with A LOCAL INTEGRATE SIM for where the “UNLIMITED” statement can be implemented. Outside Italy many of operators rent pocket wifi with in most of lucky max 1GB per day that today is no more acceptable for 7/8$ per day.

Roaming cost reduce but is still close to 3/4 euro per GB in EU and 5 EUR for overseas.

In Italy the SIM solutions is , behind the complex to have 2 sim inside, not “an unlimited” solutions and get a non balanced product between “GB” and “MONEY”

Consider where and when you'll use it.

Not all portable Wi-Fi hotspots can be used everywhere. If yours is tied to a U.S.–based carrier (like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon), and you're planning on going abroad, you need to make sure you've paid for a data plan that includes international use. If you're only traveling for a short period of time, this might be the most convenient option. 

But if you're planning on traveling internationally for an extended period of time, you might want to opt for an unlocked portable Wi-Fi hotspot — that is, one that isn't tied to a specific carrier. You can then buy a data plan from a company based in your destination, which usually is a more economical decision. "SIM cards are cheap and easy to get in lots of countries worldwide, and going this route ensures you get the strongest signal possible for the lowest price," Peter Holslin, senior staff writer at internet comparison site HighSpeedInternet.com, told T+L.

The duration of your trip should also inform whether you want to purchase an as-you-go data plan (better for shorter tips) or a monthly one (better for longer trips).

Check with your phone carrier

"When you use a portable hotspot, you can choose the carrier it's connected to. So if you want to maximize your coverage, you can use one carrier for your phone and a different carrier for the hotspot," Walker said. It's often cheaper to buy a Wi-Fi hotspot to hook up to a local network while traveling versus paying for an international phone plan with your current carrier as well.

Think about voltage and battery life

For the most part, portable Wi-Fi hotspots use a relatively low amounts of power (about five to seven volts, depending on the size and strength of the device). However, you should still utilize a power converter when plugging your hotspot in during international travels. Not all outlets around the world support the same power output, so using an adapter can prevent blowing a fuse or sparking your devices. If you want a more portable Wi-Fi hotspot that doesn't need to be plugged in, be sure to check its expected battery life to know exactly how long you can use it on the go.

Many cell phone providers have international plan options for travelers, and you can turn most smartphones into a mobile hotspot under that plan. Then you can connect devices to your cell phone for internet services. But that's not always the best solution. "One thing to consider is carriers may limit the hotspot data amount on your phone, so you may see slower speeds at a certain point," Walker said. "You also don't have to run your cell phone battery when you use a standalone hotspot." On the other hand, portable Wi-Fi hotspots require their own data plans, which costs additional money.

Having reliable mobile data on your phone is a must when visiting Italy. But don’t be one of the many travelers who spend a fortune using their home plan’s international data service package because buying an Italian eSIM data plan is a much cheaper option.

In this guide, I’ll cover how to find the best eSIM for Italy so you have consistent high-speed mobile data without spending a lot of money.

Why You Should Avoid Using Your Home Plan’s International Data Plan

Your current mobile phone provider will probably have an international data plan option but these plans are expensive and the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

Many TMobile plans come with free unlimited international data plans but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email.

For example, If you’re American, the  AT&T International Day Pass  costs $10/day,  Verizon TravelPass  is also $10/day, and many  T-Mobile plans  offer free international roaming but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email. Some of these plans offer “unlimited” data but you only get 1-2GB/day of 4G data before you’re throttled down to 3G speeds. Canadian and Australian carriers probably offer similar packages.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying an Italian eSIM data plan—for example, eSIM data plans from Orange or Holafly will cost you around $2-$3/day.

On a personal note, I use T-Mobile as my domestic carrier and I’ve personally gotten very inconsistent data speeds when using their free international data roaming plan while visiting Europe. For example, I was in Barcelona in March 2024 and about 20% of the time service was slow but somewhat usable but the other 80% of the time I couldn’t even load a simple webpage or use Google Maps. After a few days, I switched to  Holafly  and had zero problems.

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans for Italy

There are a handful of different mobile providers that offer eSIM data plans for Italy.

The first (and most complicated) option is to buy an eSIM/SIM data plan from one of the main Italian mobile carriers ( Wintre , TIM Italy , and Vodafone Italy ). The problem for visitors is that many of these Italian plans are intended for people who live in Italy so you either need to jump through some hoops by signing up for a long-term contract or providing a local address and Codice fiscale  (tax code).

The other option is to buy a prepaid eSIM data plan that’s geared toward short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, etc.

For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM plan will vary slightly so it’s important to pay attention to the specific details of each plan. But here are the main things to consider:

• Data Allowance: Most plans give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
• Plan Length: eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days. It depends on your plan so it’s something you’ll want to consider when picking a plan.
• Mobile Hot Spot Tethering: Most eSIM plans don’t allow you to use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
• NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between iPhones but you can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which is what most Europeans do).

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB): $59.90

• Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
• Data:  50GB
• Service Speed:  4G/LTE
• Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
• Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
• Credit validity:  28 day
• Data Tethering:  Allowed
• Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
• This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
• Service works everywhere in the EU

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a more robust version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM: $49.90

• Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
• Data:  20GB (Orange often upgrades the plan to 30GB of data)
• Credit validity:  14 day
• Data Tethering: Allowed
• This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used in Italy

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is the most robust eSIM plan on this list because it comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that will work anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You’ll get 20GB of data with this plan but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB. But even 20GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always buy a second plan).

Bouygues My European eSIM: $44.90

Bouygues is another major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

• Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
• Service Speed: 4G/LTE
• Calls: Unlimited within Europe
• Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe
• Credit validity: 30 day
• Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
• Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM: $29.90

• Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
• Data:  8GB (Orange sometimes gives you 15GB of data)
• Service Speed:  4G/LTE
• Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
• Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling for a week or two but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

HOLAFLY UNLIMITED ESIM: STARTING AT $34.00

Holafly  is a new data-only eSIM provider that I previously used while visiting Italy and had a great experience using (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to get a more in-depth look). Holafly sells both Italy-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans. Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from a local Italian mobile provider (Wind Tre) so you’re more likely to get less priority on the Wind Tre network during peak usage times.

Unlike other mobile companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I also like how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE IN ITALY

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  as well as tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe  but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Italy.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

Data can be expensive and it’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s why it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

To move forward with the other companies on our list, we have to talk about the Terms & Conditions of the company . This is very important because if you damage or lose a device, they will charge you $159, which must be paid immediately .

Now, it’s time to talk about Hippocket WiFi. This company is located in France and only offers the Pocket WiFi service to European countries.

Obviously, Italy is part of that list. For those who want to go ahead and use their service, the price for a week of usage is $55.20 . By paying this, the device will give users access to 1GB of mobile data per day for that week.

The company will be glad to send the device to different European countries, and depending on how far and how fast people want to receive the device, the price will vary . So, be prepared to pay around 11.36 to 22.71 USD to get the device before traveling.

Hippocket WiFi also charges people who lose or damage one of their devices. This is something normal in this kind of company. So, if you lose or damage the Pocket WiFi in Italy , the extra charge is around 153 to 170 USD.

Known before as Wifivox and located in Spain, it’s time to talk about the next company on our list; Travel WiFi.

This company has been in the market for quite some time now, and it has Pocket WiFi coverage all around Europe. So, in case you want to use their service, be prepared to pay $55.65 for a week of use , and only have access to 1GB of mobile data per day.

No need to worry if you are not in Spain; the company will send you the device no matter where you are. But, this has a price . The delivery offered by Travel WiFi is around 3 to 23 USD depending on the country you are in.

And, to finish things up with this company, we also need to talk about Terms & Conditions . Just like other companies, if something happens to the device, people will have to pay up to 199 USD to the company to replace the Pocket WiFi.

If you are not located in Europe and need to find an alternative closer to you in America, then you can give Cello Mobile a try.

This company has been working in the Pocket WiFi market for quite some time now, so they couldn’t be off our list. For those who want to use their service, the price is $104.93 for a week . It will only give access to 1GB of mobile data to people, and they also need to pay insurance for the device.

Now, if you need to receive the device in your location, the company will charge you around 10 to 75 USD depending on where you are . In Mexico and Canada, we can find the lowest fees, while in the rest of the world, the delivery costs $75.

Finally, the company also charges people an extra fee in case they lose or damage a device. In this case, as people have paid for insurance before , the price to pay is $75. 

The final company on our list comes directly from Europe once again, and they are based in Switzerland too. 

Compared to Travelers WiFi, they offer pretty similar rates to their customers. Why do we say that? Well, because for a week of usage with 1GB of mobile data, people have to pay $75.38, just a cent above the price of Travelers.

But, the main difference between both companies comes when talking about deliveries. In case someone needs to receive the device in a different country, the company will charge around 4 to 11 USD for the delivery service.

Last but not least, the Terms & Conditions of the company. Just like we have seen before, My Webspot will also charge people who lose or damage their devices. In this case, the price will be around $204.41 to 102.20, and the final will be determined once the company sees if there is insurance for the device or not .

So far, we have only talked about how to get a Pocket WiFi Italy on how much people have to pay for it. Sounds good, but it might not be the best idea for everyone, right? That’s why we have to talk about other alternatives too.

But, which ones are those options we are mentioning? Well, simply as SIM and eSIM cards, and even free WiFi. But let’s see why we are mentioning them.
