But it wasn’t finished until the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King, in the 1600s, according to its website . This château also played a vital role during World War II. Artwork at the Louvre was evacuated in haste to protect these masterpieces from the Nazis, and the château stored many pieces safe keeping. Approximate distance by train: 1 hour 30 mins If Reims doesn’t get you all that excited, the alternate capital of Champagne is Epernay, and is only a further 30 minutes ride away. At the Mercier farm, one can visit the barrel that holds the equivalent of 250,000 bottles of champagne. The attraction actually competed with the Eiffel Tower during the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. Moet and Chandon’s facilities can also be toured in Epernay.

Clos Montmartre in Paris

Approximate distance by train: 15 min Clos Montmartre is a vineyard on the slopes of Montmartre Hill, just below the Sacre Coeur Basilica. Those who don’t know about this wonderful winery would walk right past it without looking twice, as its location is simply so unexpected that one may assume its simply someone’s personal backyard project or nothing too serious. The vine harvest takes place in early October and it is celebrated with a local festival. Days are packed with song, dance and feasting amongst local communities who come together to sample the year’s yield. The event is called the Vendanges de Montmartre and, for anyone in Paris at the time, it’s not to be missed!

For your next vino-filled French adventure, consider one of these six regions, complete with industry hangouts, bottles that rarely leave French shores, and, yes, envy-inducing Champagne.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir aficionados, you’re in luck! Heading to Burgundy is much more accessible than you may think. Want an urban escape? Head to Beaune and sip through the city’s tasting rooms. Best of all, the city itself happens to be breathtakingly gorgeous.

Burgundy-bound tasters looking for a more intimate experience can hop the train to Macon, perhaps the region’s best-kept secret. In Macon, you can still find delicious, affordable bottles of Chardonnay. You will most likely need to rent a car, but, on the upside, you won’t need to contact producers too far in advance.

How to get from Paris to Lyon and Avignon

As Lyon is on the other side of the country, I recommend taking the train from Paris to Lyon . You can take the TGV from Paris to Lyon. This will take about 2 hours and 10 minutes . The train leaves from Gare de Lyon and arrives at Gare de Lyon-Part-Dieu station in Lyon.

Another city you might want to head to is Avignon , as Avignon is situated in the heart of the Rhône Valley wine region . The train from Paris to Avignon takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes and leaves from Gare de Lyon.

From Avignon: Châteauneuf du Pape and Luberon Tour with Wine

It was such a lovely day out. We did two wine tours which complemented each other, one showed how the wine was made while the other show you how to best taste wine. In the afternoon we did the Lubernon tour visiting three towns. Must-Visit Wineries near Paris and How to Get to Them

Paris used to be surrounded by vineyards and market gardens, but almost all of them were swallowed up by the huge growth of the city in the 19th century. Wineries near Paris aren’t hard to access, though!

While a guided trip is always an option, you can access some of the best Paris wineries on your own with a little research and planning.

Top wineries near Paris by region

Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) is not just an apellation d’origine controlée , but also inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list , together with the city of Dijon as a wine heritage site. 

Dijon is about an hour and a half by train from the Gare de Lyon in Paris, and its wine heritage is on display everywhere, from the great winemakers’ mansions in the old city to the many wine bars and cellars. You can even see the 13th century wine presses set up by the Dukes of Burgundy in the little suburb of Chenove.

The vineyards are so close to the city that you could simply rent a bike and take to the road. Or, if you prefer a more organized approach, take one of the many tours offered by the local tourism office . 

The vineyards of the Champagne region are the closest to Paris, right at the edge of the great limestone basin that forms the Île-de-France district with Paris at its center. The countryside is remarkably beautiful, with rocky ridges and forests contrasting the lines of vines on the slopes below. Its calcareous soils and undulating slopes, together with its northern, cool climate, create the distinctive terroir of Champagne.

But it’s what happens in the wineries themselves that’s really important. First up is the aging in oak barrels, which gives Champagne a subtle woody flavor. Next comes the blending, and finally (once it’s been bottled) is the “riddling,” or turning the bottles around daily to enable the lees to settle in the bottlenecks, making Champagne crystal clear.

Not sure where to start your Champagne adventure? There are more than 250 kilometers of cellar tunnels dug out of the soft stone beneath the city of Reims, so that’s your best bet. It’s just 45 minutes by train from Gare de l’Est.

Pommery is one of the biggest houses in Reims, with massive cellars (some of them dating from the time of the Romans, who started the wine tradition here!). This is the must-do visit, and easily the most impressive. 

You can also visit some of the other great names in Champagne, among them Mumm , Veuve Cliquot , Lanson or Taittinger . Taittinger’s cellars date from the 13th century, and it’s one of the few Champagne houses still in family ownership. Its vintage Comtes de Champagne is one of the most highly rated Champagnes, and a truly exceptional wine.

Before you go : Check with the Reims Tourist Office to see which cellars are open when you visit. 

Reims isn’t the end-all-be-all of the world’s most iconic sparkling wine. Alternatively, you could take the slower train (an hour and a half) to Epernay, the second capital of Champagne. 

At Mercier , a little train makes its way through the massive cellars for a quirky experience. However, the star attraction here is the huge barrel that competed with the Eiffel Tower for visitors’ attention at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900. It holds the equivalent of 250,000 bottles of Champagne! 

Perrier-Jouet and Moët & Chandon also offer tours, but don’t be afraid to check out smaller producers like Michel Gonet or Venoge in Epernay. Both are housed in lovely 19th century mansions on the leafy Avenue de Champagne, with a laid-back feel that the big touristic cellars can’t match. 

Walk the Avenue itself and you’ll find a half dozen more Champagne houses. Keep an eye out for the wine producers’ association headquarters, complete with a Champagne glass-themed pavement in its courtyard!

Urban wineries near Paris

Ever thought about discovering vineyards actually inside the city? Though most of the old Paris vineyards have been built over, a few still remain. And in recent years, some new vineyards have been planted, reestablishing links with the city’s winemaking history.

There’s a tiny vineyard in Félix Desruelles Square in Saint Germain-des-Pres, with just 10 vines and a rather lovely decorated fountain. It’s one of those charming little sights that make Paris such a rewarding city for a stroll.

More well known and much bigger is the Clos Montmartre , planted in 1932 on the slopes below Sacré Coeur basilica. Its nearly 2000 vines are mainly Pinot and Garnay, with a few other varieties (Merlot, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon blanc). This vineyard even has an annual harvest feast, the Vendanges de Montmartre , in early October.

You could also visit Clos de Bercy , which produces 250 liters of wine a year. These vines are relatively new, but the winery buildings have been around for ages.

Additionally, the tiny vineyard in the Parc de Belleville doesn’t make much wine, but the extensive views over Paris make it a good choice for a stroll to clear your lungs and get away from the traffic and noise of the city.

Wineries near Paris: Micro style

Paris now also has two urban micro-wineries which offer a fascinating and very different take on wine and the city.

Les Vignerons Parisiens

Les Vignerons Parisiens buys its grapes from vineyards further south, all of which are organic and many of which operate on biodynamic principles, and which harvest by hand. The wine is produced with the same handmade techniques and organic ethos, adjusting the winemaking process to the particular needs of each wine or grape. There’s no “right way” of doing it here, as there is in most traditional wineries.

Winerie Parisienne

Winerie Parisienne was started in 2015 and occupies an old printing works. Like Les Vignerons, it’s committed to organic and biodynamic principles. It aims particularly for freshness of taste, and runs an experimental series of small-production wines.

In fact, if you want to assemble your own cuvée , you can take a workshop, benefit from the winery’s expertise, and go away with your own special bottle! Or you can just visit the winery , learn about the processes used, and taste some of its production.

Winerie Parisienne has even gotten involved in planting a 10-hectare vineyard near Versailles—the first serious new planting in greater Paris in over a century.

Visiting French wine country from Paris is a popular pursuit for many travelers, and for good reason.  The proximity of these regions to the city, combined with their diverse offerings, makes them a perfect addition to any itinerary. In this article, we will delve into the four most accessible wine regions near Paris and what each has to offer.

It is important to note that wine exploration is not about checking off as many regions as possible in a short period of time. Rather, it is about taking the time to fully appreciate the character and offerings of each region that is why I recommend only adding one to an already full travel itinerary that includes Paris. So, leave the rush behind and allow yourself the opportunity to fully immerse in the beauty and flavors of each region. Whether you prefer historic cities, rolling hills dotted with vineyards, or charming medieval castles, these wine regions are sure to captivate you.

#1 Champagne: Closest and Most Accessible Wine Destination

The Champagne region is the first on my list for a reason. Not only is it home to the world’s most famous sparkling wine, but it is also the closest and most accessible wine destination from Paris. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or just starting your wine journey, the Champagne region is a must-visit.

Located just a short 45-minute train ride away from Paris, this region offers stunning landscapes, rolling hills dotted with vineyards, and charming small towns. With its ease of accessibility, you can see a lot of the region without a car and even take part in a day trip to Champagne on your own or through booking a guide. Take the train from Gare de l’Est to either Reims or Epernay and visit some of the most famous Champagne houses on foot. If you pack some good walking shoes too, you can even hike out the vineyard if you go to Epernay because they are closer to the heart of the city. Epernay is also home to the famous Avenue de Champagne.

A visit to Champagne’s French wine country wouldn’t be complete without a guided tour at one of the major Champagne Houses, where you can taste and learn about the production process of this famous wine. If you are in Reims, try Veuve Clicquot or Taittinger , and if you are in Epernay, visit the iconic Moët & Chandon .

#2 Loire Valley: Sipping and Sightseeing in the Garden of France

The Loire Valley French wine country is a breathtaking region located just a couple of hours from Paris by train, known for its captivating vineyards and stunning 16th century chateaus. This region produces almost every wine style. The Loire Valley is home to renowned appellations like Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé but also the lesser-known yet equally delicious Vouvray and Touraine, which are all centered around the city of Amboise. This is why the Loire Valley earns its place at number 2 on my list – it offers a unique blend of history, art, and wine discovery, all easily accessible without the need for a car.

Amboise, with its famous chateau and the home of Leonardo da Vinci, is a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts. I highly recommend exploring the region’s vineyards and enjoying a picnic with a bottle of local wine, making it the perfect place for an overnight stay. #3 Bourgogne: Prestigious Wines and Historical Charms

Bourgogne, also known as Burgundy, ranks third on my list of must-visit wine regions in France. This region is renowned for its prestigious red wines from Pinot Noir and white wines from Chardonnay. In addition to the world-class wines, Bourgogne is home to historic cities like Beaune, with its charming architecture and rich cultural heritage.

Staying in the area for at least 2-3 nights is recommended to fully experience and understand the complexities of the Bourgogne wine classification system. The system can be daunting, but it is also fascinating and a must-learn for wine enthusiasts. The region is also perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, as you can hike and bike through the vineyard landscapes. You can easily explore Bourgogne without a car by overnighting in Beaune and taking day trips to nearby cities like the historical capital of Dijon.
