It's a decent bike for the money, probably best in it's class. It's biggest weakness is the rigid fork. I've enjoyed the bike and had fun on it, but I haven't taken it to the mechanic much so it's starting to fall apart on me. I think overall if you keep it mechanically sound it'll be a great bike for anyone. The front shock though is a great upgrade, I got one for my bike and it feels worlds better to ride on.

Decent bike for the money, more solid feel than some due to the excellent frame and Bontrager wheelset. Still, overall, the quality of the parts you don't readily see is not that good, and this begins to show after about 9 months of use. You could upgrade this bike, but it might not be worth it, considering everything you'd really have to replace. Ride it into the ground and sell it on eBay!

This is my first real foray into buying a decent bike and with SA exchange rates it's difficult to get bang for your buck. I was mainly attracted to the Trek bike because of the name. The frame is great and after a bit of research it is pretty much a stock that is used throughout the Trek low to mid range of alu bikes. Standing at 5'11 the 19.5 frame may be a bit too big for me due to the high standover. The spec that the bike ships with in SA seems to be lower than the US/UK. This is most probably to keep costs down. But for the price everything is working well so far, but I plan to upgrade most parts over time. The bike was fitted with a Sync Excel fork as a replacement for the rigid fork. Not great - rather spend more and get a better fork. A few tweaks will turn this into an excellent bike. The Y2K model seems to already be sporting a few.

The bottom line is that this is a great bike. I reviewed it before I bought it, and after carefully looking over many other bikes in my price range, I found that this was the best. I am a beginner, and did not have the money to buy a bike that had decent components AND a good front fork (I weigh 230!). So I compromised. Part for part, this is the same bike as the Trek 6000, but does not have the suspension fork. I added Schwinn Trail-Enz bar ends (which are nice) and a water bottle, and maxed my budget. Now, I got a good deal on all of this ($400 total, inc. tax). So after I have proven to my wife that I will ride, I will save up and put on the front suspension fork that I want (instead of suffering the one that came with the bike or any bike). I might add a susp. seat post in the future, too. I'll have to see about clipless pedals - not sure yet. But the point is I CAN, and my bike will just continue to improve and will probably be as good a bike as I will need until I break it! :-)Summary: Buy this bike - especially if you are a beginner. Just keep in mind it has a high standover height, so if you are below 6', get the 18 and not the 19.5Good job, Trek. Thanks for the value! I'll give ya' 5 flaming chilis for this effort!

I'm a roadie, and as such, I'm very much a rookie with regard to off road bikes. I bought the 4000 in order to ride with my son, who loves dirt riding. We've had a great time. Trail riding really is a gas. The 4000 surprised me. It's very comfortable and set up so that the cyclist can either cruise or hammer. The pedal straps allow the rider to either climb more efficiently, or, on flat surfaces, to be economical with the pedal stroke, without feeling intimidated by being clipped to the bike. The lack of shock absorbers could be a problem for a serious mountain biker because the aluminum frame could rattle him/her to death on rough terrain. However, this bike is not designed for that type of riding. In fact, the chromemoly fork does a good job of soaking up the little bumps one would expect to encounter on a tamer surface such as a fire trail. The components perform very well. The shifting from gear to gear is very smooth, even under a load, and the breaks have excellent stopping power. Oh yes... the seat... very cooshy. Posterior paradise. Overall the 4000 is a sweet little machine which looks good and works well. For the money, it's a great buy.

I think this is a great bike, you get great components for the price. it has the best set-up out of most bikes in its class. The only thing I'd change on it would be to add a suspension fork, other than that I love the bike.

For the money, this bike ROCKS. Bontrager Corvair rims, Bontrager Jones tires, Trek Alpha Aluminum frame, Icon 6061 bar...From a price point, you can't go wrong. The biggest weakness is that is has a rigid front fork. But if you look closely (visit Trek's site) you will notice that this is the SAME bike as the more expensive 830 AL, but has better components.This will be my first mountain bike. After I break it in a bit, I'll yank the rigid fork and drop a Judy on it or something - then the bike will be as good as the cro-mo Trek 930.Don't pass this up if you are a weekend warrior. And it would take a lot to change my mind. :)Five flaming chilis! 4 for value, and 4 for components! Plus one for just being a solid bike.

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike Features

Frame and fork.

First things first, the frame is a crucial component of any bike. In the case of the Trek 4300, it’s made of aluminum, which is a popular choice due to its durability, affordability, and lightweight. 

In fact, the original 4300 model used Trek’s Alpha Aluminum frame that’s tough enough to handle rugged trails with ease. As the model progressed, Trek introduced the Alpha Gold Aluminum material for the frame of the later versions of the 4300. 

This updated version has a more aggressive race geometry for speed, with internal cable routing for durability, and rack mounts for versatility.

You’ll also find that it has a replaceable derailleur hanger. Now, these upgrades made the bike more versatile and allowed it to handle a wider range of terrain.

Moving on to the fork, the Trek 4300 is a classic hardtail mountain bike with a front fork. This means that the front wheel is equipped with a suspension system that can absorb shocks and vibrations, making for a smoother ride on moderate terrain. 

The suspension fork has 70-100 mm travel, depending on the specific model, and it’s designed to handle mountain trails. However, it’s important to note that the suspension fork isn’t long enough to handle descents on rough trails. 

So while it can certainly absorb some bumps, it’s not enough for really difficult trails or downhill riding. But don’t worry, this bike can still take a lot of abuse. After all, it’s a mountain bike, and it’s designed to handle dirt trails.

Gears and Brakes

Gears and brakes are some of the most important components of a mountain bike, especially if you plan on hitting tough trails or climbing hills. 

Let’s take a closer look at the gear and brake systems on the Trek 4300 mountain bike.

In the first few generations of the Trek 4300, you could find a 3x8spd drivetrain with 24 gears.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more efficient, the later models of the Trek 4300 were fitted with the Shimano Acera M390 9-speed drivetrain. This gives you a wider range of gears for better control on hard trails.

Now, let’s talk about brakes. If you carefully look through all the different versions of the Trek 4300, you’ll find that some of them had rim brakes and some others had disc brakes. 

The older models were fitted with rim brakes, while the later models featured the Shimano M395 hydraulic disc brakes, which gives a much better braking power at a great price. 

Wheels and Tires

Most mountain bikes we see now have 29-inch wheels, but the Trek 4300 had 26-inch wheels and 26×2.20 tires, which actually are very agile and will quickly pick up speed. 

In later models, these tires were improved to be puncture resistant and could withstand increased tire pressure. 

We consider bigger wheels to be better for mountain riding, but small wheels aren’t that bad either because they are more agile, tend to accelerate faster and will easily move around tight corners. And these features are great for technical riding. 

But the bigger 27.5 and 29″ wheels actually provide more stability and comfort, which is why they are now preferred for mountain biking.

Despite the small wheels, the double-walled rims and 32-spoke design of the Trek 4300 are pretty solid and tough enough to withstand years of abuse on the trails.

At the end of the day, the wheels and tires on the Trek 4300 are a great combination for riders who want to tackle technical terrain and need a bike that can handle quick acceleration and tight cornering. 

While the market may be shifting towards larger wheels, the Trek 4300 is still a great option for those who value nimble handling and puncture resistance.

Saddle and Handlebars

The saddle is an important component of any bike, especially when it comes to mountain biking. 

While the standard saddle on the Trek 4300 may not be the most comfortable, the 31.6mm seatpost offers plenty of adjustment for a customized fit. 

You can even upgrade the saddle to one that suits your preferences for maximum comfort.

The handlebars of the Trek 4300 are a different story, though. Made from durable alloy, these handlebars are built to withstand the rigors of off-road riding. 

With a 31.8mm diameter and 15mm rise, the handlebars provide a comfortable and stable grip while you ride.

The stem of the Trek 4300 is also designed for both comfort and control. With a 31.8mm clamp diameter and a 10-degree rise, the stem ensures a comfortable riding position while keeping you in control of the bike. 

When you combine the Bontrager Riser handlebar and the Bontrager Approved stem on the Trek 4300, you get a comfortable and stable ride. 

Size and weight

When it comes to finding the right fit, the Trek 4300 Mountain Bike has got you covered. With a wide range of frame sizes available, from 13″ to 22.5″, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your body type. 

Actually, you may find sizes ranging from 13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″. But since these bikes have been discontinued by Trek, finding them in the exact size you want may be a challenge.

One thing to keep in mind is that the bike weighs around 28.2lbs (12.8 kg), which might not make it the lightest bike on the market. I believe this is due to the front fork, which adds weight but also adds extra shock absorption for a more comfortable ride. 

However, this bike is sturdy enough to support riders up to 265 lbs of body weight.

Ride quality and performance

The Trek 4300 Mountain Bike offers fun and confident rides on the trails, whether you’re hitting the trails or cruising around town. 

While it’s considered an entry-level mountain bike, don’t let that fool you. It’s a reliable bike that can be used for commuting, leisurely rides, or for hitting some challenging trails.

The comfortable riding position and triple chainring setup make it easy to tackle steep hills and rough terrain. Plus, the high-quality suspension system keeps things smooth and comfortable, no matter what kind of surface you’re riding on.

Trek 4300 has durable components that are built to last, so you don’t have to worry about things breaking down quickly. 

The responsive brakes and smooth-shifting gears give you complete control and make riding this bike a breeze. And, even in wet or muddy conditions, the disc brakes offer reliable stopping power.

One of the best things about the Trek 4300 is its versatility. While it’s certainly a capable mountain bike, it’s also a great choice for commuting or everyday riding. 

Best Trek 4300 Alternatives

As Trek 4300 mountain bikes are now discontinued, you cannot buy them brand new. However, Trek has a range of trail bikes that offer superior build quality and performance. 

These models are more advanced and come at a higher price point than the budget options available from brands like Schwinn and Mongoose, but the investment is worth it as the quality is unmatched.

In my opinion, the Trek Marlin 5 and Schwinn Traxion are great alternatives for the Trek 4300 mountain bike.

Trek Marlin 5

Trek Marlin 5 is a trail mountain bike that’s built to gracefully handle daily adventures on rough terrains. It has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 2×8 drivetrain for smooth riding and shifting and powerful hydraulic disc brakes which provide fast and precise stopping. 

While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike. This bike has a stunning frame with internal routing for the brake and shift cables, which can extend the lifespan of your wires by shielding them from the environment.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Schwinn Traxion

Exclusive: ‘Star Trek: Khan – Ceti Alpha V’ Audio Drama Podcast Is Currently Casting

It was two years ago on Star Trek Day 2022 that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (and Star Trek VI ) director Nicholas Meyer officially announced a new audio drama titled Star Trek: Khan – Ceti Alpha V . Originally developed as a streaming TV mini-series, the project had morphed into an official Paramount podcast series set to examine what happened in the years after Captain Kirk left Khan Noonien Singh on the untamed world of Ceti Alpha V, telling the story of Khan and his followers prior to the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . We haven’t heard much about the project since then, but TrekMovie just got an exclusive update from Meyer himself.

Casting for Khan – Ceti Alpha V

Ahead of the release of his latest novel Sherlock Holmes and the Telegram from Hell next Tuesday as well as his Labor Day weekend appearance at a 70 MM screening of Star Trek II at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills (part of a TOS movies marathon), TrekMovie caught up with Meyer to talk about his history with Trek, and more. This included getting an update on Ceti Alpha V . When asked if the project is still going he was clear, “It’s alive!” He added:

“I’m thinking [recording will start] with within the next year. They’re casting.”

According to Meyer, he had written three one-hour episode scripts for a TV mini-series and those now “form the nucleus” of the audio drama podcast, which he expects will end up being nine or ten episodes in length.

Khan as the hero

Meyer offered some backstory on the project as he described his approach to the story:

“It started with a suggestion by made by Alex Kurtzman. We were sitting in a deli and he said, “What ever happened to Khan on Ceti Alpha V?” And I suddenly remembered that exchange in Citizen Kane  between Kane and Boss Gettys . And Gettys says to Kane, ‘You know if it were anyone else, I’d say that what just happened to you would be a lesson. But you’re going to need more than one lesson. And you’re going to get more than one lesson.’ So this is about Khan discovering that there are more things in heaven than Ceti Alpha V than were dreamt of in his philosophy. And it’s how he copes.”

Khan is considered one of (if not the) greatest Star Trek villains. But Meyer explains how the  Star Trek: The Original Series episode that first featured the character allowed an opportunity to reframe him as a protagonist:

“[In Ceti Alpha V ] Khan is the hero. [In TOS “Space Seed”] Kirk says to him, ‘You think that genetically engineered man is the measure of all things. I’ll give you a chance to prove it.’ I’ll put you on an Eden-like planet, and let’s see if you can build your own Utopia, as you claim that you’re able to do… By the end of the story, I wanted people to weep for this man. I hope that you understand where he’s coming from and what his destiny is and why it is.”

In 2022 when the project was officially announced, executive producer Alex Kurtzman said in a statement:

“Nick made the definitive ‘Trek’ movie when he made ‘Wrath,’ and we’ve all been standing in its shadow since. Forty years have offered him a lot of perspective on these extraordinary characters and the way they’ve impacted generations of fans. Now he’s come up with something as surprising, gripping and emotional as the original, and it’s a real honor to be able to let him tell the next chapter in this story exactly the way he wants to.”

There are no details available on how Paramount plans to distribute the audio drama podcast, nor is there a release date, but this is the biggest update we have had all year.

Meyer tour for new Holmes book starts Tuesday in LA

Nicholas Meyer’s sixth Sherlock Holmes novel Sherlock Holmes and the Telegram from Hell , arrives on Tuesday, August 27. On that same day he kicks off a nationwide book tour where he will be doing readings from the book along with discussions. The first stop is Diesel, A Bookstore in Brentwood, CA. at 6:30 pm PT. The thirteen-stop takes him to cities across the USA, returning to LA for an event on Monday, September 30th. More details at nicholas-meyer.com .

Meyer at Labor Day weekend 70MM TOS movies marathon in Beverly Hills

Nicholas Meyer will be one of the Star Trek vets appearing during a special Star Trek screening series at the historic Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA. They will be showing the TOS era movies in Super 70MM starting on Friday, August 30st, wrapping up on Sunday, September 1st. Other luminaries lined up for the event include actresses Robin Curtis (Saavik) and Catherine Hicks (Dr. Gillian Taylor), executive producer Ralph Winter, producer Steven-Charles Jaffe and composer Cliff Eidelman. Leonard Nimoy’s son will also appear to discuss his film For the Love of Spock .

Tickets are available on the Fine Arts Theatre website, fineartstheatrebh.com and on the Fine Arts App available on Google Play Store and the Apple App store, as well as at fandango.com and  atomtickets.com. I dunno, IMHO the best villians are the ones you can somewhat sympathize with. Villains that are pure evil are frankly boring. I don’t personally need more Khan in my life but if I trust anyone to do it it is obv this man.

I have at least some sympathy for him because everything he went through on Ceti Alpha V was Kirk’s fault.

Someone should have been looking into Khan and his people regularly, if for no other reason than Starfleet was so paranoid about genetically engineered people that a century later, they were going to drum Bashir out just because he was one.

He’s a villain, sure, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t merit exploration as a character. Villains are interesting, moreso when they’re relatable.

I’m done with other people messing with Khan who isn’t Nicholas Meyer, but Meyer gets a free pass from me, considering he’s the man who made Khan famous in the first place. This is arguably the first actually-Khan story since 1982.

As usual he is misremembering stuff, the planet was no paradise, it was deliberately chosen as a challenge by kirk, one khan relates to Marla as a challenge just to stay alive.

I wouldn’t have called it a paradise per se but it certainly wasn’t meant to be the barely livable desert hell it turned into. That happened because Ceti Alpha VI exploded in space and knocked V off of it’s original orbit.

I want to be excited about this. I genuinely want to. Nicholas Meyer is extremely talented and he gave us the three best movies, II, IV, and VI. And yet, I can’t muster much enthusiasm. Khan’s story on Ceti Alpha V has been extensively explored in the novels and in the comics, so there’s really no need to retread that ground. Ricardo Montalban was mesmerizing in his two performances, but there’s just not much to the character; Khan is one-dimensional and not very good at what he does. After two episodes and two movies, spanning two TV shows and two realities, what more is there to say about a guy who claims to be superior but has been beaten four out of four times he’s tried to prove it (the Eugenics Wars, Space Seed, TWOK, and STID)? Khan just isn’t that formidable a villain, as he has repeatedly proven. Like certain celebrity politicians and nepo baby businessmen who claim to be geniuses and winners, he’s repeatedly proven himself to be a failed leader and a fascist loser.

This story could very well be about how a narcissistic strongman can lead people to ruin, or further ruin. In that context, it could be interesting. Not sure how I would “weep” for such a person, though.

We shall see. I mean, hear.

You could say the same of historically evil figures like Napolean and Hitler. OBV they were pure evil but it would be hard to argue they weren’t effectrive leaders. It’s really easy to cater to the worst forms in hate in a society and twist that and bend it to your will. That’s pretty much exactly who Khan is, minus all the genetic engineering stuff.

I know this isn’t the movies or tv or streaming but I wonder if this is going to be considered canon. No, it really doesn’t matter but I am still curious if Kurtzman will choose to build off of this story i a future project.

Wish they would give Nicholas Meyer a Trek series. I bet SNW would have improved over Season 1 vs. jumped the shark had they had him in the show runner chair. He got Trek the nautical exploration action/adventure on the frontier better than even 90s “prophet” Roddenbery. Above all he seemed to make the actions of a single starship bridge crew and the Enterprise feel like a capital ship. Everything after ST VI feels like starships are a dime a dozen that rush each other like jet fighters that last 2 seconds in combat while starfleet command is right there on speed dial.

Season 2 did improve over Season 1’s spectacular debut. Loved every episode! Blush emoji.

AUDIO WHAT?? I love Meyer’s first two Sherlock Holmes novels, and the two or three Star Treks they were involved in. But the latest Sherlock novel is about fake news and ends with fake news in the afterword, very strange and very disappointing.

What Star Trek novels was Meyer involved with?

None, though his late assistant used cut material from TUC as a basis for his abysmal trek novel.

One of the greatest western films of all time, one that Meyer almost certainly saw as a teen, revolves around fake news. John Ford’s THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE revolves around myth vs truth and ends with the very cynical ‘print the legend.’

I haven’t read his Holmes stuff (not a fan of Holmes at all to be honest), but he did write CONFESSIONS OF A HOMING PIGEON, which I thought was a fantastic novel when it came out the year before TWOK (plus it hinted at what we’d see in that film, thematically.) Probably read it ten times since. Also, his THE LOVE STORY STORY on the making of that film was clever and personal, as he made his obvious fascination with Allie McGraw as a significant element as much as the making of the film itself.

I don’t really care about this but will listen to it. Maybe after this they can finally move on from Khan and look forward again from the 25th to the 32nd century. Lots and lots and lots of new stories and characters to tell between this time period.

And we’re already getting one Space Hitler movie with Adolf and Section 31 I don’t think we need another one with Khan. But hopefully it will be good at least.

While I feel Khan’s story has been told (and re-told) on screen in 2 movies and countless novels, I am curious because:

1) Nick Meyer took all the pieces of Star Trek II that people had assembled and combined it all and rewrote it, adding his own work in a very short time and gave us the best Trek movie EVER in ST2:TWOK.

2) Nick Meyer wrote EVERYTHING in Star Trek IV in the 20th century.

3) Nick co-wrote ST6:TUC.

Nick is responsible for so much of the look/feel/traditions that are familiar in all Trek.

Nick and Harve saved Trek.

So I trust him to give us a good story.

And then, YES, it’s time to move on from Khan!

What? That is from one of the early poster concepts by Bob Peak from the 1980s. And the type treatment added on top comes from Paramount plus when they announced the podcast.

If this project is so great, why a podcast rather than investing the money into a movie or miniseries? That makes no sense to me.

You have probably heard that Paramount is in a bit of financial trouble. To be honest, I’m surprised that this project hasn’t been shelved completely. After we hadn’t heard any progress about it for so long I expected that they had abandoned the project. As to why it’s a podcast and not a movie or series: My guess is they estimated that the expected viewing numbers wouldn’t justify the costs of a bigger production. A podcast gives Meyer more freedom to expand the story and not be limited by costs for sets or VFX. Also, recording voice actors is much cheaper than actually filming stuff for real.

Because they probably don’t have the money and they fear not enough fans are interested enough to make it successful as a show or film. So this was the other option and yes the safer one given Paramount’s money woes these days.

And Terry Matalas confirmed the original mini series was canceled to make room for Picard which they knew would be an automatic hit. But he also made clear Star Trek doesn’t have a bottomless money to make whatever it wants and this was back in 2018. It’s much more dire today.

Paramount sure loves to give us new Star Trek productions that no one asked for…

Can we petition Paramount and Mr. Meyer to make a relatively low-budget, original Star Trek standalone movie or TV movie that concentrates on story and acting instead of $100 million worth of unnecessary CGI?

Nice to see this is still happening. Don’t have a lot of interest in it but will definitely listen to it when it does come out.

Just crazy something like this is taking three years and the scripts were written before it was even announced. Now we see why the movies continue to be DOA when an audio podcast takes this long to get made lol.

Star Trek Is Turning Its Greatest Villain Into a “Hero”

Has the most compelling Trek origin story not yet been told?

When Khan (Ricardo Montalbán) avenged himself upon Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the USS Enterprise in The Wrath of Khan , he felt he was perfectly justified. And, interestingly, his specific reasons for being so furious with Kirk are somewhat murky. Of course, Khan wasn’t created wholly for the film, even though, generally speaking, after 1982, people tended to have seen the film before The Original Series episode, “Space Seed.”

But between “Space Seed” and The Wrath , there are two decades in which Khan goes from reformed outlaw to stark-raving outer space madman. How did he get this way? For several years, there has been talk of miniseries exploring Khan and his follower’s exile on Ceti Alpha V. In 2022, this was confirmed to be an original fiction podcast, written by Nicholas Meyer, the visionary behind The Wrath of Khan . And very recently, Meyer dropped an intriguing update on what fans can expect from the upcoming Khan miniseries, currently titled Ceti Alpha V .

Ahead of his new Sherlock Holmes novel — S herlock Holmes and the Telegram from Hell — Meyer spoke to TrekMovie and revealed that the Khan podcast series is currently casting and that the project that was announced two years ago is very much “alive.”

Meyer also illuminated his approach to how Khan will be written in the new series. In the 1967 Original Series episode “Space Seed,” the crew discovers Khan, a genetically engineered tyrant from Earth’s past , preserved in suspended animation. Although passing as a noble person, Khan nonetheless is a ruthless man out of time and tries to take over the Enterprise . In the end, Kirk and the crew beat Khan and retake the ship, but instead of sending Khan to space jail, Kirk takes pity on this once-great man and leaves Khan and his followers on a harsh, uninhabited planet called Ceti Alpha V.

Fast forward to The Wrath of Khan : The environment of Ceti Alpha V became nearly unlivable six months after the Enterprise dropped everybody off, which transformed Khan from a shifty idealist into a desperate survivalist. And it's in this shift that Meyer plans to reveal a new side to our perception of Khan.

“[In Ceti Alpha V ] Khan is the hero,” Meyer told TrekMovie . [In “Space Seed”] Kirk says to him, ‘You think that genetically engineered man is the measure of all things. I’ll give you a chance to prove it.’ I’ll put you on an Eden-like planet, and let’s see if you can build your own Utopia, as you claim that you’re able to do...”

Without space travel or cameos from regular Star Trek characters, it seems possible that Ceti Alpha V could be the Trek franchise version of Dune , on a slightly smaller scale; a story of how one man sees himself as the hero and becomes a villain. “By the end of the story, I wanted people to weep for this man,” Meyer said. “I hope that you understand where he’s coming from and what his destiny is and why it is.”

Ceti Alpha V is currently casting and is expected to record next year.

Trek 4500 hardtail review

Clean, functional package

While the glamorous range-toppers attract attention, it’s usually the unsung and unremarkable mid-range bikes that generate most of a bike company’s profits. Trek know this, which is why the 4500 is the product of some time-proven design features and sensible, if unadventurous, hardware choices. It's a competent trail all-rounder that aims to please most riders, most of the time. But you could be having more fun for this kind of cash.

Ride & handling: Newbie-friendly but short on thrills

Trek has years of experience in turning out bikes that won’t scare off new riders. It shows in the 4500, which pulls off the deceptively simple feat of providing a ride position that’s both newbie-friendly and surprisingly efficient. The shortish top tube and longer stem won’t win any prizes for lively steering, but that’s hardly a major concern if you’re looking for your first steed. And the big stack of headset washers between the top bearing race and the underside of the stem leaves plenty of scope for adjustment as your tastes refine.

Out on the trail there’s little to disturb this feeling of confidence-inspiring can-do. Grippy tyres translate your efforts into forward progress without fuss, that extra large rear sprocket makes short work of steep climbs and 100mm of rock-swallowing travel up front means it’s hard to bite off more than the 4500 can chew. The only thing that’s missing is the liveliness that distinguishes fun frames from competent ones.

It’s also worth noting that with its relatively weighty build, conservative geometry and unforgiving wishbone rear end, the 4500 ploughs a furrow through – rather than skipping its way over – rougher sections of trail when the pressure’s on. That means it’s hard to get too excited about the 4500. It’s well built, doesn’t expect too much of you and gets the job done. But if you’re looking for thrills, this isn’t the bike to find them on.

Frame: Functional chassis is ready for a brake upgrade

True to form, there are no surprises in the 4500’s neatly welded chassis. You won’t find any wacky tube profiles or superfluous gussetry here – just well designed functionality. The hydroformed down tube features an extra bulge at the vulnerable head tube junction, doing away with the need for a separate welded strengthening gusset.

Tidy wishbone seatstays incorporate some neat rack and mudguard mounts that you’ll appreciate when commuting or touring, and there are two bottle boss mounts inside the main triangle. A cutaway disc mount, along with disc-compatible hubs, makes any future brake upgrade a relatively cheap and painless process, but you’ll have to live with the rim brake bosses on the seatstays if you make the switch.

Trek’s design team has gone with 100mm of travel up front, in the form of a RockShox Dart 2 coil-sprung fork. The difference between 80mm (3.14in) and 100mm (3.9in) at this price is largely down to your personal preferences, because ride quality is affected by factors such as tyres, frame weight and resilience just as much as it is by fork performance.

Having said that, the Dart 2 is a decent contender, with adjustable rebound damping and a lockout function – great if you’re hard on the pedals and concerned about excess bob. It can’t quite match more expensive forks for controlled plush and steering precision, but it’s a good first line of defence in the battle against blurred vision and loose fillings.

Equipment: Nine-speed cassette and Bontrager kit

You may have noticed the lack of disc brakes on the 4500 already, but don’t worry, there’s an upside to their omission. Instead of hydraulic discs as standard, you get a nine-speed cassette at the rear, driven by Shimano’s evergreen and very reliable Deore mech. That extra rear sprocket creates room for 34 teeth and a genuinely useful low gear.

The Tektro/Avid rim brake setup isn’t as powerful in the wet as the best disc alternatives, but it makes up for it with easy maintenance and a light, progressive lever feel. The Bontrager finishing kit is all good stuff too – particularly the open-treaded Jones ACX tyres, which cope well with the UK’s slimy trail conditions.

8 Alpha Quadrant Things Star Trek: Voyager Found In Delta Quadrant

• Star Trek: Voyager finds familiar things from the Alpha Quadrant in the Delta Quadrant, sparking important questions and connections.
• Encounter with Ferengi negotiators leads Voyager crew to stop their interference in a pre-warp civilization for profits.
• Janeway and crew discover humans abducted by aliens in the 1930s living in the Delta Quadrant, including Amelia Earhart.

For a show with the conceit of being so far from home, Star Trek: Voyager found a surprising number of things in the Delta Quadrant that originated in the Alpha Quadrant, including several from Earth itself. The USS Voyager, commanded by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and Commander Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) Maquis raider Val Jean were both brought to the Delta Quadrant in 2371 by the Caretaker (Basil Langton). After Janeway destroyed the Caretaker's array to save the Ocampa , Voyager and the Val Jean were left without a ticket back to the Alpha Quadrant, and banded together to make the long journey.

Finding something familiar in an otherwise totally alien corner of the galaxy brought a sense of familiarity to the USS Voyager crew and viewers at home alike, but the presence of something from the Alpha Quadrant in the Delta Quadrant inevitably raised important questions , like how familiar people and objects traveled 70,000 light years from home in the first place, and whether the find could lead Captain Kathryn Janeway towards a quicker path home to Earth.

Star Trek: Voyagers 20 Best Episodes Ranked

The USS Voyager encounters a pair of Ferengi negotiators, Arridor (Dan Shor) and Kol (Leslie Jordan), who claim to be the prophesied Great Sages of the Takarians, a society with Bronze Age level technology. The Ferengi have no Prime Directive to deter them from interfering with the Takarians' development , so they're performing "miracles" with a standard replicator to reap the monetary benefits of the Takarians' worship. Voyager's crew know the Ferengi reputation well enough to know they're no Sages, so they must figure out how to put a stop to Arridor and Kol's grift.

"False Profits" serves as a Star Trek sequel episode to Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 8 "The Price", as Voyager catches up with Arridor and Kol (formerly played by J. R. Quinonez) seven years after their Delta Quadrant arrival. The Ferengi took a test flight through the supposedly stable wormhole near Barzan II, which was supposed to emerge in the Gamma Quadrant, but instead stranded the Ferengi in the Delta Quadrant, where they made the best of their situation as only Ferengi can.

Star Trek: Voyager Season 3, Episode 23 "Distant Origin"

"Distant Origin" opens on Forra Gegen (Henry Woronicz), a scientist who discovers that his people, the Voth, share certain genetic similarities with the humans aboard the USS Voyager. While this confirms Gegen's theory that the Voth are the descendants of a species brought to their homeworld millions of years ago , religious leader Minister Odala (Concetta Tomei) refuses to accept the truth. Even with Commander Chakotay present as a living specimen of humanity, Odala pushes Gegen to recant, because Gegen's theory goes against the Voth Doctrine that keeps Odala in power.

After meeting Gegen's assistant, Tova Veer (Christopher Liam Moore), Janeway and the Doctor use the holodeck as a research guide to extrapolate how hadrosaurs might look in the 24th century if they'd been able to evolve into a humanoid form with comparable intelligence. The result resembles Veer, so Janeway and the Doctor conclude, like Gegen, that the Voth evolved from hadrosaurs into a highly advanced species on Earth , then fled to the Delta Quadrant in spacefaring vessels instead of being wiped out with the other dinosaurs.

The Friendship One Probe

By Star Trek: Voyager season 7 , the USS Voyager is in regular contact with Starfleet Command, and Starfleet gives Voyager a mission to retrieve a 21st-century Earth probe, Friendship One . The probe proves difficult to find, but once discovered on an alien planet suffering devastating climate collapse, the implications of Friendship One's launch become clear. Besides the irreversible damage to the planet's climate, the inhabitants are all suffering from radiation sickness, and bear understandable hostility towards Earth, because the aliens believe humans orchestrated their destruction with the Friendship One probe.

The United Earth Space Probe Agency was one of the early names for the organization the USS Enterprise belongs to in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Charlie X".

Friendship One was launched in 2067 by the United Earth Space Probe Agency with the intention of making friends with whomever found it, as the name implies. Although Friendship One, the 400-year-old Earth probe, traveled for centuries carrying messages of peace, musical recordings, and ways to translate languages, the people who discovered Friendship One in the Delta Quadrant took a greater interest in the antimatter it used to travel across space. Without the proper knowledge of its use, antimatter proved devastating to the planet and its people, resulting in death and disease for generations.

Dreadnought, a Cardassian Missile

The USS Voyager discovers a dangerously powerful, self-guided Cardassian missile in the Delta Quadrant, which Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) recognizes as one nicknamed "Dreadnought" . When B'Elanna was with the Maquis, Torres had actually reprogrammed the missile herself, with the intention of turning the Cardassians' own weapon against them. Without a Cardassian target in sight, the artificially intelligent Cardassian Dreadnought targets a heavily-populated Class-M planet , Rakosa V. B'Elanna determines she must be the one to keep Dreadnought from hurting anyone else, and boards the missile to convince it to stand down.

While no concrete reason is given for exactly how the Dreadnought wound up in the Delta Quadrant, its last known location in the Alpha Quadrant was the Badlands, the same rough patch of space where Voyager and the Val Jean, Chakotay's Maquis raider, fatefully met. Because of this, Torres theorizes that Dreadnought arrived in the Delta Quadrant the same way that Voyager and the Val Jean did , courtesy of the Caretaker.

Star Trek: Voyagers BElanna Is More Klingon Than TNGs Worf Ever Was

The USS Voyager certainly never expected to find a Klingon ship in the Delta Quadrant, but more surprising is the fact that the crew of the Klingon D-7 Class Cruiser believes their savior, the prophesied kuvah'magh, is aboard Voyager . Janeway assures the Klingon captain, Kohlar (Wren T. Brown), that the Federation and Klingon Empire have been allies for the past 80 years, and offers Voyager's own half-Klingon, Lt. B'Elanna Torres, as proof their societies are working together now. The kuvah'magh is Torres' unborn daughter, who does save the Klingons, but not the way they expected.

Centuries ago, Kohlar's great-grandfather set off on a quest to find the kuvah'magh, and the Klingon D-7 Cruiser became a generation ship that is now crewed by the descendants of its original crew . The quest begun by Kohlar's great-grandfather brought Kohlar and his crew to the Delta Quadrant after four generations of searching. Whether B'Elanna's child is actually the kuvah'magh or not, Kohlar desperately wants the baby to be their savior, so that his people may finally rest.

Amelia Earhart

Star trek: voyager season 2, episode 1 "the 37s".

The discovery of a 1936 Ford truck, seemingly disconnected from any parent vehicle, leads the USS Voyager to a nearby Class-L planet, where they find eight humans who have been in cryo-stasis since they were abducted by aliens in the 1930s. Among them are one of Janeway's personal heroes, legendary American aviator Amelia Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) , who disappeared without a trace while attempting to fly around the world, and Earhart's navigator, Fred Noonan (David Graf). Earhart and the other preserved humans are known by the planet's inhabitants as "The 37s", and revered as sacred.

Originally thought to be aliens, the natives of the unnamed planet are the descendants of humans. A species called the Briori abducted the natives' ancestors, along with Earhart and the other 37s, from Earth centuries earlier , and took them to the Delta Quadrant. Once held as slaves, the humans who weren't in stasis revolted to free themselves from the Briori, and developed a thriving, Earth-like civilization in the Delta Quadrant. Voyager's crew consider staying with the humans in their little slice of home, while Janeway also offers a ride back to Earth to anyone who wants it, including Amelia Earhart.

The USS Equinox

Star trek: voyager season 5, episode 26 & season 6, episode 1 "equinox".

The crew of the USS Voyager believe they're the only Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant until they find the USS Equinox, five years into their journey home. Captain Rudolph Ransom (John Savage) and the Equinox crew have had a harder time in the Delta Quadrant than Voyager, with more damage, fewer starting resources, and fewer opportunities to make friends along the way. Ransom's survival tactics include sacrificing innocent nucleogenic life forms for a more efficient form of fuel, which Janeway finds hard to stomach, and decides that Ransom needs to be held accountable for defying Federation ideals, regardless of how badly the Equinox is damaged.

Although Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) suggests that the Equinox might be in the Delta Quadrant on a rescue mission to find Voyager, the USS Equinox's specs don't fit the profile of a starship that would be assigned to a long-range mission. The explanation of how the Equinox arrived in the Delta Quadrant in the first place seems fairly simple, because Captain Ransom tells Janeway that the Equinox was also abducted by the Caretaker , just like Voyager, but the Equinox has only been in the Delta Quadrant for 2 years, and Janeway destroyed the Caretaker's array 5 years earlier.

When Captain Kathryn Janeway allies with the Borg in order to secure safe passage across Borg space, Janeway refuses the cursory assimilation that the Borg want to use to communicate with Janeway and Voyager's crew, and instead requests a speaker for the Borg, citing the existence of Locutus (Patrick Stewart) as precedent. Seven of Nine , Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01, is selected as the Borg drone to act as liaison between the Collective and Voyager, likely because Seven of Nine had once been a member of Species 5168, like most of Voyager's crew -- in other words, human.

Voyager season 5, episodes 15 & 16, "Dark Frontier" provides even more detail of the Hansens' fateful journey.

After Seven's link with the Collective is severed, more information about Seven's human origin comes to light. In Voyager season 4, episode 6 "The Raven", when Voyager nears the Hansens' ship, the USS Raven, memories of Seven's early life surface, revealing that Seven had been six-year-old human Annika Hansen , the daughter of Magnus Hansen (Kirk Baily) and Erin Hansen (Laura Stepp), Federation scientists who were studying the Borg when they were assimilated. Voyager season 5, episodes 15 & 16, "Dark Frontier" provides even more detail of the Hansens' fateful journey, showing the Raven arriving in the Delta Quadrant by following a Borg Cube through a transwarp conduit.

What year is this Trek 4900 Alpha?

I cannot find the year on Treks archive or Bikepedia, so not sure of year. But by looking just at what you posted, personally I would not pay $420 for it, MAYBE low to mid $300's, but I dont know the full specs besides the Manitou black fork and bb7's.  

Okay. Well, is it going to be a good bike or is it not worth his time? It looks real nice, but that's not always the case lol.  

After some digging, the frame looks like it's from a 2003. However, BikePedia lists that the disc model came with Hayes mechanical brakes and a Rock Shox Pilot C fork. Maybe these items were upgraded and that's why the price is firm?  

It's a 2003 4900 Alpha. The seller is dreaming - I would not pay a dime over $220 for that bike, upgrades or not. The dead giveaway, are those add-on, rear disc tabs, and ancient, Avid BBDB mechanical disc brakes. For $450, there are BETTER bikes out there to be had.....

Summary [ ]

On stardate 3715.3, the starship USS Enterprise orbits the planet Gamma Trianguli VI . A landing party comprised of Captain Kirk , Commander Spock , Ensign Chekov , Yeoman Martha Landon , and two security officers , Kaplan and Marple , beam down to the planet to scout the area, followed shortly after by Dr. McCoy and two more security officers, Hendorff and Mallory .

Spock notes that the soil on the planet is rich and fertile and that there is very little variation in temperature, even at the poles, with a planet-wide average of 76 degrees . Chekov says that it makes him homesick , because it is "just like Russia ". When McCoy corrects him that it is more like the Garden of Eden , Chekov claims that the Garden of Eden was "just outside Moscow ". However, almost immediately, one of the security officers, Hendorff, is shot and killed by a pod plant . " What did somebody say? That paradise must have looked like this?", Kirk says.

Act One [ ]

Kirk contacts Montgomery Scott on the bridge of the Enterprise , who reports that they are encountering a minor problem with the antimatter pods and that the readings on the planet's electromagnetic field are "a wee bit abnormal". At this point, it does not appear to be a major problem, but Kirk asks him to keep an eye on the situation. Spock reports that his tricorder has detected strong subsurface vibrations, coming from miles in all directions, that are "quite strong, fairly regular, [and] artificially produced".

Kirk orders two of the remaining security officers to make a full reconnaissance of the area, but to avoid contact with humanoids , be wary of other dangers, and stay in constant communication . Spock detects a humanoid lurking in the bushes nearby. Kirk goes off to investigate, and reports that " whatever it is, it moves like a cat ". He advises the other members of the landing party that they are being watched, and they start heading through jungle for a nearby village in formation L.

Spock discovers a rock that has a low specific gravity, and is very brittle. After breaking it in two with his bare hands, he casually tosses aside one of the pieces, and it violently explodes. Kirk asks him to be careful when tossing his rocks from now on.

Back aboard the Enterprise , Scott contacts Kirk to report that the antimatter pods are completely inert because of something on the planet's surface that is acting "like a pail of water on a fire". Spock surmises that it may have something to do with the vibrations his tricorder picked up earlier.

McCoy shows Kirk some of the plant darts and notes that they have an extremely strong poison on the tip. While he and Kirk are talking, Spock notices one of the pod plants turning slowly and preparing to shoot, just in time to step in front of it and take a chestful of darts himself instead of Kirk. He falls to the ground and the captain fears the worst, but Spock is still alive and McCoy quickly begins treating him.

Realizing there is too much danger, Kirk orders a retreat. However, Scott reports that the ship's power systems are being drained. An attempt to beam up the landing party fails (the landing party does shimmer and dematerialize three times, but fail to vanish each time as transporter contact (unable to covert the landing party into energy) can't be made); the Enterprise 's transporters don't have enough power to even transport "a fly ," Scott reports.

Act Two [ ]

After Kirk realizes he and his party are trapped on the planet, Spock regains consciousness, reporting that the injection McCoy had used to revive him turns his stomach, but that he is otherwise "quite well" (possibly spared by his Vulcan physiology). Kirk chastises him for stepping in front of the plant and tells him to "just yell" next time. Suddenly, an electrical storm starts and Lieutenant Kaplan is struck by lightning and vaporized. The rest of the party runs for cover.

Meanwhile, security officer Mallory (who was not with the landing party when it was discovered that there were exploding rocks on the surface) has reached the village and contacts Kirk to tell him the coordinates, but his and Kirk's communicator stops working shortly afterward. Concerned for his safety, Kirk and the others rush to find him, just in time to see him step right onto an exploding rock. He is killed instantly. Kirk remarks that he knew Kaplan's family, and that Mallory's father helped him get into the Academy . Kirk has become increasingly distraught over the now multiple deaths of his crewmen. Spock and McCoy try to console him by telling him that he couldn't have foreseen any of the accidents that have happened while they were on the planet and that he was given orders to explore the planet, but Kirk is convinced that he could and should have done more to prevent the deaths.

" I won't hurt you, do you understand? I won't hurt you. "

While they are talking, Spock notices that the humanoid who was spying on them before has returned. Kirk orders Spock, Chekov, and Marple to create a diversion while he ambushes the humanoid. Kirk successfully comes up behind the humanoid and punches him in the face, but is surprised when the planet native starts to cry. Kirk assures the humanoid that he won't hurt him again, and asks him why he has been following them. He says, " I am the eyes of Vaal . He must see, " and introduces himself as " Akuta , the leader of the feeders of Vaal . " Spock notices antennae on the back of his head, and Akuta responds they are Vaal's ears, given to him in the "dim time."

Kirk asks to speak to Vaal, but Akuta says that he is Vaal's representative and that only he speaks to Vaal. Akuta offers to take Kirk and the others to the village.

Meanwhile, Scott hails Kirk to inform him that the Enterprise is being held in orbit around the planet by an unknown source, and is unable to break free. Kirk asks again to be taken to Vaal and this time, Akuta agrees, but says that Vaal will speak only to him.

Akuta takes the landing party to Vaal, which is a large cave with a mouth, the inside of which glows red, that resembles the head of a serpent with green and yellow snake-like eyes.

Act Three [ ]

Spock's tricorder reads that Vaal's opening leads beneath the planet's surface and Kirk believes it may be the source of the field that is affecting the Enterprise . When he tries to approach Vaal to get a closer look, he is repelled by a powerful force field . Kirk asks Akuta how he talks to Vaal, and he says that Vaal calls him when he has something to say and that Vaal might be willing to talk when he is hungry.

Akuta leads the landing party to the village for food, drink, and rest and introduces them to the "people of Vaal" who are smiling and friendly to the landing party. A female native introduces herself as Sayana , and she and the others seem much amused upon learning Spock's name. Kirk points out that the tribe doesn't seem to have any children and asks Akuta why. Akuta at first doesn't know what children are, but finally realizes Kirk is talking about what the tribe call "replacements", and replies that Vaal has forbidden love and marriage . McCoy scans the people and sounds surprised when he discovers they are in perfect health and that they don't seem to be aging at all.

Suddenly, the villagers all begin to congregate around Vaal. Kirk and Spock follow, and spy on them from behind a bush. After observing that the villagers are able to approach Vaal, Kirk decides to try his luck. When Kirk and Spock start to get up from behind the bush, Vaal immediately notices, as apparent from suddenly glowing eyes, so they decide against it and resume their attitude of observing only. Kirk wonders whether Vaal gets weaker around feeding time and asks Spock to get an estimate from the Enterprise 's astrophysics lab of the total amount of energy Vaal is expending against the ship on an hourly basis.

McCoy joins them and complains to Spock that Vaal is depriving the planet's inhabitants of their right to "a free and unchained environment" and an opportunity for growth. Spock argues that McCoy is unfairly applying Human standards to non-Human cultures, and that humanoids also have the right to choose a system that works for them.

Scott contacts Kirk to report that Vaal's power output has been slowly decreasing, and that they are working on increasing power to the ship's impulse engines , but the work will take eight hours to complete. Kirk notes that they don't have much longer than that to break orbit before they get pulled into the planet's atmosphere .

Back in the village, Kirk wonders what would happen if one of the villagers died . Yeoman Landon agrees that they would need a replacement , but she wonders where this replacement would come from, since they don't have any concept of love . Spock postulates that in that case, Vaal would provide the "necessary instructions." McCoy remarks that he would like to see that.

Out in the jungle, two of the villagers, Sayana and Makora , see Landon and Chekov embracing and kissing , become curious and decide to try it themselves. Vaal reacts by shaking the ground as Akuta catches them in the act. Vaal communicates to Akuta through his antennae, apparently telling Akuta that Kirk and the others are dangerous to the planet's inhabitants. He calls a village meeting at the clear place of the male "children of Vaal" to take place while the landing party is asleep.

Akuta tells the male villagers that Vaal has ordered them to kill the strangers. The villagers don't understand what the word "kill" means, so Akuta explains that " it is a thing to do, like feeding Vaal, " and demonstrates by violently smashing a piece of fruit (representing a stranger's head) with a stick.

Act Four [ ]

In the hut, while the others sleep, Kirk and Spock discuss the situation. Kirk has decided that he agrees with McCoy: the villagers' society is completely stagnant and exists only to serve Vaal. Spock warns that interfering with Vaal would violate the Prime Directive , but Kirk sees no other choice. " These are people, not robots. " Spock does not believe Starfleet Command would agree with Kirk's interpretation, but the captain decides to take his chances.

Kirk contacts Scott and asks for a progress report. Scott still needs half an hour to complete the modifications to the engines, but he only has 47 minutes until the Enterprise is pulled into the planet's atmosphere.

Spock announces that the people of Vaal seem to have disappeared. Kirk and Spock go to Vaal and Spock determines that the force field is down. Kirk tries to talk to Vaal, but Vaal starts another lightning storm. Spock is stunned by a bolt of lightning, and Kirk carries him back to the village, where McCoy diagnoses him second-degree burns – painful, but not serious.

Suddenly, the villagers return and successfully ambush and kill Marple but the others are able to fight off the rest of the villagers. Kirk orders Chekov, Landon, and McCoy to imprison the villagers in one of the huts.

With twelve minutes left before the ship enters the atmosphere, Scott has transferred all available power to the impulse engines and is ready to try to break orbit. He orders Kyle to apply full reverse and the ship begins to pull away enough to gain another hour but most of the ship's systems have been heavily damaged and Scott will not be able to try it again. Kirk becomes distraught at the idea of the Enterprise 's entire crew of over four hundred dying because he didn't realize the danger early enough and orders McCoy and Chekov to prevent any of the villagers from feeding Vaal and Scott to concentrate all of the Enterprise 's phaser power on Vaal's coordinates. The ship begins firing phasers at Vaal.

Trying to defend itself against Enterprise 's phasers forces Vaal to exhaust all of its energy reserves. Spock determines that Vaal is no longer generating any power and pronounces it dead. Scott reports that potency is starting to return to the ship's antimatter pods and that engineering will be able to start repairs immediately. Kirk orders him to send an engineering detail down to the surface as soon as the transporters are fixed and then tells Chekov and McCoy to release the villagers. Later, in front of a lifeless Vaal, Akuta is at a loss as to how he and his people will survive without Vaal. Kirk tells Akuta and the rest of the natives that they will now have the freedom to live their lives as they see fit and to love.

Back aboard the Enterprise , Spock expresses his concern in one of the ship's corridors that the people of Vaal have been "driven out of paradise ", as in the Biblical story of " Genesis ". Kirk asks if Spock is casting him in the role of Satan , which Spock denies and then rhetorically asks Spock whether he knows of anyone on the ship who looks like Satan, while he and McCoy circle him. Spock replies, " I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain. " Kirk says, " No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would. "

Background information [ ]

• Spock's lightning-burned shirt was auctioned off at a science-fiction convention in 1967.
• This is the episode in which the redshirt phenomenon comes to the fore. Every red-shirted male in the landing party dies horribly. Hendorff is killed by the plant's poisoned darts, Kaplan by the lightning, Mallory is blown up by an exploding rock, and Marple is killed by a blow to the head.
• Of his many appearances in Star Trek 's second and third seasons, this was the most dialogue Jay Jones ever delivered. In fact, his only other speaking roles are three words in " The Tholian Web " and a couple of brief voiceover lines in " Catspaw ".
• Jay Jones, a frequent stunt performer, was seriously injured while filming the "exploding rock" scene.
• Footage of the Enterprise firing phasers down to the surface of a planet is reused from " Who Mourns for Adonais? ".
• Walter Koenig seems to have discarded the wig he used in his earlier episodes. Since his own hair was now long enough, it was not necessary for him to wear it anymore.
• The sparkling effects as Vaal is attacked by the phaser barrage were lifted from the opticals used for the Companion in " Metamorphosis ". They will appear again in the opticals for the creature in " Obsession ".

• George Takei ( Sulu ) and Nichelle Nichols ( Uhura ) do not appear in this episode.
• After reading the script giving Akuta an antennae implanted in his head, Robert H. Justman jokingly suggested they should cast Ray Walston (famous for his portrayal of "Uncle Martin" in My Favorite Martian ) for the part. ( These Are the Voyages: TOS Season Two , p. 204) Two and half decades later Walston was indeed cast in Star Trek , in the role of Boothby in " The First Duty ".
• Spock states he has an assessable value in this episode, which he begins to enumerate as "One hundred twenty-two thousand, two hundred ...", after Kirk asks if he knows how much Starfleet has invested in him.
• McCoy describes the poison in the thorns that killed Hendorff and injured Spock to be "like saponin, only 1,000 times stronger." Given the potency of sapotoxin, this would give it an approximate LD50 of 1 mg/kg earning it a rating of a class 1 toxin (extremely toxic) on the Hodge and Sterner Scale.
• It is established in this episode that the warp nacelles can be discarded from the ship and that it is a dangerous process.
• This episode's original script called for an emergency saucer separation . However, due to budgeting, the effect was only mentioned but not seen. It was seen for the first time in TNG 's pilot episode, " Encounter at Farpoint ".
• In a special feature on the Star Trek (2009) DVD, Anton Yelchin , who plays his alternate counterpart in the film, specifically mentions Chekov's behavior in this episode – seemingly more concerned with "macking" on Landon than completing the mission at hand – as a prime example of the eccentricities which, in Yelchin's opinion, were the best thing about the character.
• The episode was adapted into issue thirteen of IDW Publishing 's alternate reality Star Trek: Ongoing comic series, " Hendorff ". In this version, the redshirts survive their ordeal, although Hendorff ("Cupcake" from the 2009 film) wonders if in another universe everyone died.
• The 2013 video game Star Trek uses this episode's title as a chapter title.

Remastered information [ ]

Minimal changes were made to the special effects in the remastered version of this episode. Most notable was the new appearance of Gamma Trianguli VI and the phaser color and its effect while hitting Vaal. The sky color surrounding the storm clouds (taken from stock footage) was tinted red and orange in the DVD version, to match the red colored sound stage backdrop. In the remastered version, it's reverted to the original blue-gray and black.

Moscow from two wheels

While in Paris or Amsterdam, cycling to a business meeting is a common occurrence, it is still considered an oddity in the Russian capital. Moscow is thought to be incompatible with the bike – streets dotted with cars, pedestrian walkways in place of bicycle lanes and a lack of special parking areas seem to be the fate of Muscovites. But over the last two years, bicycle sales have surged in Moscow’s sporting goods stores. Where do Moscow’s cyclists ride?

It is rare to see anyone riding a bike in central Moscow. The only exception is migrant workers, who can’t afford a car or even public transport; they pedal their Soviet brand bikes to get to work, wearing their orange vests.

Outside of this, the heaviest flow of bicycles in Moscow can be observed on Friday nights –fastened to the top of private cars as Muscovites rush to the country to cycle in the forests.

For Russians, it seems that cycling is a popular recreational activity, rather than a mode of transportation.

And yet some cycling sanctuaries do exist in this city, albeit a small number, with lots of space for biking and good sights. Here are some of the most popular routes:

Sparrow Hills – Luzhnetskaya Riverside

Most tourists are familiar with Sparrow Hills Park thanks to its observation deck, which provides one of the best panoramic views of Moscow. The main building of Moscow State University, one of the seven Stalin-era skyscrapers sometimes known as the Seven Sisters, is also located in the same area.

Cyclists ride down the park’s steep and gently sloping descents. Beyond that, a 2.5-km cycling path with special coating and markings runs alongside the Luzhniki embankment between the Vorobyovy Gory metro station and the Multisport recreational facility.

Gorky Park and the Neskuchny Public Garden

Despite plenty of space and an abundance of paved paths, it’s not particularly easy to ride a bike in Gorky Park, given the large crowds of people and children shuffling between numerous attractions.

Adjacent to Gorky Park is Neskuchny (“not boring”) Public Garden – the oldest green area in the center of Moscow, established as early as the mid-18th century. Today it looks more like a wild forest: The trees have branched out, stone sculptures have been reduced to ruins, and the pond has become overgrown with duckweed. This keeps it from being one a popular place for leisurely strolls and makes it possible to ride bikes here.

The Neskuchny Public Garden spreads out along the Pushkinskaya embankment. A cycling lane running across the garden leads to Gagarin Square (Leninsky Prospekt metro station) past a hunting lodge remaining from Prince Trubetskoy’s estate.

Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo

Overgrown ponds and 200-year-old pines are a testament to the great history of this Moscow park, which centers around the old Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo estate, which once belonged to the Streshnev family, relations of the royal Romanov dynasty.

Numerous pathways extending out from the estate are perfect for serene cycling. Ravines and jumps in the heart of the park provide a zone for extreme riding.

Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo is located in northwest Moscow just a short distance from Voykovskaya and Shchukinskaya subway stations.

Krylatskiye Hills

The Krylatskoye neighborhood, one of the most environmentally clean areas in Moscow, lies to the west (Krylatskoye metro station). The Krylatskiye Hills Park has been officially recognized as a nature sanctuary and spreads out over an area of 200 hectares. Its unique terrain featuring tall hills and an abundance of winding slopes and ravines attract lovers of hazardous freecycling. Those who prefer safe cycling use a 13-km riding track built for the 1980 Olympic Games.

The most notable historic landmarks in Krylatskoye are the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, built in the late 19th century, and a nearby spring.

Sokolniki Park

A wide alleyway leads from Sokolniki metro station to the eponymous park. A dense forest was discovered here in the 14th-16th centuries, where Russian tsars and princes entertained themselves with falconry (giving the area its name – “sokol” is “falcon” in Russian). Present-day Sokolniki is notable for its numerous scenic alleys and pathways around several ponds. The northern part of the park adjoins the Elk Island reserve, where cyclists may actually encounter an elk while riding.

Forty-three percent of Muscovites are willing to use a bicycle not only as a weekend recreational vehicle, but also as a primary means of transportation, according to a survey of 1,000 people conducted by the research center of the job search site SuperJob.ru.

The total length of cycling lanes in London amounts to 900 km, while Paris has more than 400 km of cycling lanes. In Moscow, this figure totals about 18 km, and in St Petersburg it is 26 km.

More than 4,000 people participated in the fifth annual Moscow Cycling Night this year.
