RM222,811.95 London holiday refund deposited into Azlan Man’s account - Witness

KUALA LUMPUR : A former sales manager of Aidil Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd testified in the Sessions Court today that RM222,811.95 was deposited into the personal bank account of Datuk Seri Azlan Man after the former Perlis Menteri Besar canceled a family vacation to London, United Kingdom, in 2016.

Abdul Rahim Halim, 47, said that the package, scheduled from Dec 23, 2016, to Jan 1, 2017, amounted to RM253,195.40 and was paid for by the Perlis state government.

“The 2016 vacation did not proceed, but a sum of RM222,811.95 was refunded to Azlan’s personal account via a cheque dated Jan 24, 2017, following instructions from the then-Senior Private Secretary to the Menteri Besar of Perlis, Herwadey Hashim.

“This amount (RM222,811.95) reflects a 12 percent deduction from the RM253,195.40 paid, as a service charge by Aidil Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd,“ he said.

Abdul Rahim was reading his witness statement on the sixth day of the trial involving the former Bintong state assemblyman, who faces 10 charges of submitting false claims and receiving proceeds from unlawful activities.

Yesterday, the director of Sri Kedawang Travel & Tours (W) Sdn Bhd, Alimah Omar, 66, testified that the refund, totaling RM629,395.30, was supposed to be made to the Perlis State Secretary’s Office (SUK).

However, she was informed that the refund claim was made by Azlan, resulting in the cheque being issued in his name.

Abdul Rahim stated that he handed the refund cheque to Herwadey at Alamanda, Putrajaya, in 2017.

He added that the state government also booked a vacation package for Azlan and his family to London between Nov 23 and 30, 2017, and approved a payment of RM244,079.30 to Aidil Travel & Tours.

“Herwadey contacted me and requested that I prepare a quotation for the Perlis Menteri Besar’s family trip to London, based on the amount he was entitled to,“ said Abdul Rahim, who is now a Director at Corporate Travel Advisor Sdn Bhd.

When deputy public prosecutor Haresh Prakash Somiah asked why the witness agreed with Azlan’s lawyer, Azhar Amir, that the travel agency took no action after receiving the payment for the vacation package, Abdul Rahim responded, “I was instructed by Herwadey to return the money to the Menteri Besar of Perlis (Azlan).”

Haresh: En. Abdul Rahim, why did you agree with the lawyer, that the vacation tickets were never booked because they never existed, yet in your witness statement, you say there was a cancellation of the vacation package?

Abdul Rahim: The cancellation referred to the quotation I provided earlier.

Azlan, 65, faces five counts of false claims for overseas vacation allowances amounting to over RM1.18 million, allegedly committed at the Perlis State Secretary’s Office, Kompleks Dewan Undangan Negeri, Persiaran Wawasan, Kangar between December 2013 and December 2017.

The charges involve quotations for flight tickets to London and invoices from Sri Kedawang Travel & Tours (W) Sdn Bhd and Aidil Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd.

He is charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher upon conviction.

The trial before Judge Azura Alwi resumes tomorrow.

Will there be halal food onboard.

Muslim guests looking for halal options will have a choice of seafood, poultry & vegetarian. Halal meat is offered on sailings departing from Singapore & Dubai only. Halal “meals” are not offered, only Halal meat is available, which comprises chicken, beef (steak) and lamb . The preparation is as prescribed by Islamic law and is served only in the main dining room. Do note that the cooking method is not halal-certified.

What does my cruise fare include?

When you book your cruise with us, the fare will include  your cabin, taxes, gratuities, port fees, all meals, entertainment and activities throughout the cruise.

Do I have to be fully vaccinated to join Anthem of the Seas cruise?

Yes. For the Anthem of the Seas sailings, all guests age 12 and above must be fully vaccinated (minimum 2 doses) against Covid-19 with the final dose administered at least 14 days before the sailing date.

Are Royal Caribbean ships accessible for wheelchair users?

All of Royal Caribbean ships staterooms are specially designed with features of an accessible stateroom, to accommodate guests with mobility disabilities.

The cruise ships also have spacious corridors to accommodate 180 degree turns for wheelchairs. Most decks are accessible through automatic doors and all public rooms feature entrances with gradual inclines.

Do I need to pay a deposit when I book?

A deposit* is required to confirm your booking, which varies based on the sailing length:

3-5 night sailings: SGD100 per person 6-7 night cruises sailings: SGD400 per person 9+ night sailings: SGD500 per person

Final payment for the balance amount will then be required within 60 days prior to your sailing date. If your sailing date is less than 60 days from the time of booking, full payment will be required for confirmation.

*Note: All deposit payment made is non-refundable.

Do I have to do any test for Covid-19 before boarding?

Vaccinated guests Guests aged 12 & above are no longer required to take a RTK/PCR test for sailing length of 9 nights or less.

Unvaccinated guests Unvaccinated guests ages 5-11 must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 3 days prior to sailing date. All guests ages 4 & below do not require PCR or antigen test.

• PCR/RTK tests, both supervised and unsupervised, are accepted.
• Test arrangements are to be made at your own expense.
• Proof of negative test results can be printed or in digital format.
• Test results must be in English.

Cancellation fees

• 60 days or more before scheduled departure – deposit will be forfeited. • 31 – 59 days before scheduled departure – 50% of cost • 15 to 30 days before scheduled departure – 70% of cost • 0 to 14 days before scheduled departure – 100% of cost • No show at resort on arrival date – 100% of cost

Notes: • The date of receipt of the cancellation notice will be the day the cancellation fees will be applied. • If booked an “Air-inclusive” package, airline’s cancellation terms will apply separately.
