STA travel should be called STAr travel because the service it provides in invaluable to travelling young people. The shop on Botanic is the friendliest around and as the other reviewers have said they really do go the extra mile. I was considering a bit of time out of the real world and popped in to STAr (im calling it that now) travel. They were really helpful and although I didn't end up going away I was provided with all the information I would have needed. I still have the brochures that they kindly gave to me and sometimes I have a flick through to dream of a year in the sun. So even if you haven't made your mind up about a gap year or travelling the world at least pop in to see the guys in STAr travel, they will be only to happy to help.

"Planning a trip? Pop in and see us! With nearly 30 years experience in the travel industry, our friendly branch staff have first hand knowledge of hundreds of far flung places across the globe. They'll give you advice and inspiration, tell you about amazing sights off the beaten track, and show you the best ways to get around - without needing to pick up a guide book! " This is what they say on the website and this is everyting that you need to know about this excellent, and incredibly well respected travel agents. This is the go-to place for students to get info and book gap year holidays. My friends girlfriend recently went on a massive trip to South Asia - China, Vietnam and the like and she got all she needed from in here. You will get a friendly, reliable and polite service in this place. It really is the tops, especially for students.

I called into STA last year to price a ticket to Australia - I tend to do this in a wistful sort of fashion every six months or so (hi, Trailfinders), and normally shop online in the hopes of getting the staggering £199 one way to Sydney I got in a London bucket shop way back in 1999. And yes, I did spend that year partying like it was 1999, hence my long-lasting love for the land down under. Strewth. I waited a few minutes to be seen, but the shop was very busy and the assistant called me as soon as she could. She spent a good twenty minutes finding me a fare to Melbourne, and once I asked her to hold it for me until I was able to rob the fare, rang me back ten minutes later to say she'd just found a better deal with a free one night stopover in Singapore. Book it! I shouted in joy, I'll drop off £100 deposit now and pay the rest off in instalments. Turns out STA don't work like that. I can hardly fault them for it though, given that most travel agents don't work like that either. I was clearly spoilt as a teenager with my experiences with Skelton Travel in Lurgan, who also sold concert tickets and who would let us grubby teenagers come in once a week to pay another £2 off our Metallica tickets. As a travel agent specialising in the further flung destinations STA is well thought of, and they have plenty of packages and tours you can book alongside your ticket. Saying that, I'm not sure they're much better than booking online as I got the same fare some time later from an online company instead - although the notice in their window says they guarantee to beat any fare. But if you want to talk face to face with a knowledgeable sales assistant, and don't mind not getting that £50 discount you might by booking online, STA could work well for you.

Such a lack of communication from the beginning. Booked flights only to be told our contiki trip was cancelled and we had to choose a new date. Meant we had to rearrange and pay for new flights and hotels. Although they compensated us with £225 off this was nowhere near what we ended up spending as a result. Would not recommend booking through this company, as we were given very little information about anything outside of the continki trip, which days to book flights out and back for example.

This is the only branch of STA in Northern Ireland, and is cleverly located in Belfast in Botanic, closest to students who are likely to be the target market for this travel agent. STA specialise in providing flights and trips to far out destinations like South America, Australia and Africa. They provide a wide range of options for those wanting to take a gap year, and will help you plan big trips like Inter-railing! The staff are what sets this place apart from most travel agents. The staffs are super friendly, very knowledgeable and go out of their way to give the best possible advice. I recently went in to consider options for next summer as I will have finished approximately 17 years of full time education dating back to primary school, and I feel I deserve a big trip to round it off! Without being bombarded, I was brought to a wide range of options, ranging to going to Mexico, Bangkok and Austrailia. The STA agency operates worldwide so they have a huge range of contacts and trips that they will have something for everyone. All I need to do now is pick somewhere to go, which I am still in the middle of doing!

I went into this place, purely to have a nosey. The deals on the windows seem incredible and I really would like to take a round the world trip for next to nothing. Sadly when I got in I realised it was far from the case. First off, I just wanted to have a word with someone and they all just kind of ignored me for the best part of eternity before some soppy early 20s (going 80s) man looked up and drolly asked 'yeh?'. They were so unhelpful with what I was asking and kept insisting on other, more expensive trips as 'something I'd rather do'. As if they know!? Anyway I left annoyed and still very much in Belfast.

My friend was planning a gap year so we (I was the moral support) called in to STA on Botanic Avenue to see what the options were. He wanted to do a year in Germany and having previously taken a gap year on his own back, he wanted to see if STA offered him anything that he couldn't get himself. Turned out they offered more than he could ever dream of. STA have an "experience" in which you pay your money and you are given the chance to travel to a variety of locations and do everything from look after lions to preserve the rainforest. The best one I seen was looking after turtles in Costa Rica where they also put some of your fee towards the turtle sanctuary as a donation. He took home so much information because the lady working there was so incredibly polite and full of things he could do. I even started asking questions which in hindsight was not the reason why I was there but they even started selling it to me. Although I didn't buy anything myself, it is a fascinating place and offers a whole range of fascinating things for people to do. I will definitely come here in the future if I want an experience because you feel like you are in safe hands when you are here. Excellent.

At the start of this year, I spent an awesome few weeks visiting family in parts of Australia's east coast. Brisbane was my base, but I saw a few other places and would happily recommend spending a couple of days in a cheap hotel in Sydney's Chinatown district, near the incredible harbour, to anyone. This kind of endeavour is a big deal. I spent a long time saving my hard earned pennies for it, and a long time shopping around to get the cheapest deals. I think I took up the time of most of Belfast's travel agents. I had heard very good things about STA, and indeed have read the other glowingly popular reviews. It was the opposite in my experience. Made to wait about twenty minutes to even speak to the sniffy, couldn't-be-bothered lady at the counter, I was talked into staying a few times over by by Mrs M. I didn't know for a fact that she was sniffy and couldn't-be-bothered then, but I could see that was very little reason to keep me waiting for so long. Staring at the PC screen, immobile hand on the mouse. I sat though a lot of boring questions, and was offered a deal that was about £300 more expensive than an outlet of a large chain of travel agents that I'd been to previously. We said no thank you and left. The STA experience achieved nothing except wasting my time and putting me in a bad mood.

sta travel belfast

Located centrally on Botanic Avenue and also within Queen's Student Union STA travel is a must visit location for anyone contemplating a gap year. This business has been established for more than 15 years and only seems to go from strength to strength. The team sit down with you and talk you through all the options for gap year students, they run up an itinerary and they are very reasonably priced. There are STA travel agents based in many countries so they are literally with you every step of the way. I booked my gap year through STA and had absolutely no problems or issues and, they were on hand when I wanted to change travel dates and flights whilst in faraway countries. Like all travel agents one may be able to beat their prices if one tries to concoct an itinerary online. Remember that these people are professionals and they will take the stress and worry out of booking and you know you can safely hand over your big wad of cash without worrying about the shops legitimacy.

STA Travel Ltd ceases trading putting more than 50 UK stores at risk

Here's all the advice for those on holiday or about to travel with the company

STA Travel Ltd has gone out of business in another blow to the embattled travel industry which is being blamed on coronavirus.

The travel company, which specialised in package tours for backpackers and young people, was based in London but has more than 50 stores across the UK.

The STA Travel website says: “Due to the recent announcement that STA Travel UK has ceased trading, unfortunately our travel experts are unable to assist you at this time.

"Please be assured that if you had a previous booking with us, or hold a live booking, you will receive further communication in the coming days.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience and the limited information available to you at this time."

The Civil Aviation Authority has issued information for ATOL-protected consumers who were booked to travel with STA Travel Ltd after an announcement that it's ceased trading today (August 21).

ATOL is the holiday financial protection scheme.

For those who are currently abroad

Clarification on the number of ATOL-protected consumers abroad will be confirmed in due course.

Anyone who is currently abroad will have tickets for their flight home. These are still valid and people should check-in as normal.

ATOL will actively working with accommodation providers to make sure all affected customers can continue their holiday.

If for any reason customers are required to pay again for their accommodation, or any other part of the ATOL protected booking, they advise to obtain receipts for payment and submit a claim for the cost.

More information is available on their website at  www.packpeaceofmind.co.uk .

Consumers with cancelled bookings or refund credit notes

ATOL say they are aware of a number of consumers whose bookings have been cancelled by STA Travel Ltd as a result of government advice or flight cancellations.

Consumers who have accepted valid refund credit notes or are due refunds for the cancellation of their ATOL protected booking will be able to submit a claim to ATOL through their online portal.

For those who are due to Travel

For ATOL-protected consumers that are due to travel after August 21, 2020, flight tickets may still be valid but this must be confirmed with the airline.

If choosing to travel, consumers may be asked to pay again for replacement services of the original package holiday.

However, provided the services are covered by ATOL, they are entitled to submit a claim for a refund. Replacement services may include accommodation, transfers or other services but consumers should confirm which services were included in the package holiday on their ATOL certificate or booking documents.

If consumers have a flight-only booking that was ATOL protected, they will only be able to make a claim if they are still due to travel and have not received a valid ticket. Otherwise, consumers should speak to their airline, including if the flight has been cancelled or they have received a voucher for a cancelled flight.

For those who are choosing not to Travel

If ATOL-protected consumers choose not to travel or their flight tickets are not valid, they will be able to make a claim.

Andrew McConnell, spokesman for ATOL, said: “ We understand this will be concerning news for anyone who has booked to travel with the company or has had their booking cancelled.

"It is a sad day for the industry when a long established business like STA Travel Ltd ceases trading, especially one that many may be used to seeing in their towns and on their high streets.

“However, the ATOL scheme exists for exactly this kind of situation and we are making arrangements so that all ATOL protected customers can either continue their holiday and return home as normal, or make a claim if they are due to travel.”

STA Travel Collapse – ABTA Statement

ABTA release a statement after the collapse of STA Travel

Following the sad announcement of the collapse of STA Travel, an ABTA spokesperson has released a statement:

“The news that STA Travel Limited, which was a long-standing ABTA Member, has ceased trading will send a shockwave through the industry, bringing to life the very real pressures that travel is under at the moment.

“STA Travel will be a name that is familiar to most people who will have used them to travel or been aware of their name on the high street, and this distressing news will sadly affect the livelihoods of hundreds of employees.

“People will have used STA Travel to book package holidays as well as individual air tickets. The majority of holidays sold were flight inclusive packages, which are protected by ATOL and scheduled airline tickets only which should proceed as normal. Non-flight based packages will be protected by ABTA.

“If customers booked a package holiday through STA Travel, and the holiday is provided by another tour operator, they will need to contact the tour operator who should be able to confirm that their booking will go ahead as normal.

“Further information for customers affected can be found at  abta.com/statravel “

Noah Kahan Belfast Vital stage times, tickets, transport and all you need to know

A merican singer-songwriter Noah Kahan arrives in Belfast on Saturday ahead of his Belfast Vital gig at Boucher Road Playing Fields. Fans of the ‘Stick Season’ star are gearing up for his first ever performance in the city this weekend for the sold out show.

With thousands expected to flock to south Belfast for the gig, here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday.

More:  What you can and can’t bring to Belfast Vital for Noah Kahan

More:  How to get to Boucher Road for Belfast Vital: Translink buses and train options

What time will the concert start?

The show starts at 5pm.

What time do gates open?

The gates open at 4pm.

Is there any support act?

English singer-songwriter Maisie Peters will be providing back up to Noah Kahan at Saturday night’s gig.

Can I arrive early?

Early queuing will not be permitted in the streets around the venue. Organisers say anyone who turns up early will be turned away from the venue.

Are there any tickets left?

There are no tickets left on ticketmaster.ie for the sold out show, although a number of tickets are available via the site’s resale platform.

Is there parking at the venue?

There is no parking in the vicinity of the venue. Bus and Rail transport options can all bring you within walking distance of Boucher Playing Fields. The promoters strongly encourage concert goers to use public transport.

How to get there?

Boucher Road is accessible via public transport and those attending are asked to make use of this facility as there is no parking available in the vicinity of the venue.

However, Translink and the organisers have asked those attending the concert to plan and book tickets ahead where possible.

Translink will be operating bus and rail specials on Saturday 17 August. With a summer rail line closure between Belfast and Lisburn to facilitate the completion of the new Belfast Grand Central Station, there will be limited capacity on the bus substitution service that will feed into the late Rail Special Trains. Pre booking the rail special will be essential to ensure travel on buses linking to these later trains.

For more details on public transport to and from the gig, read more here.

What is the weather forecast?

This is an outdoor event so please watch the weather forecast prior to the show day and dress accordingly.

Current forecasts suggest that it will be a dry, mostly cloudy day on the day of the concert with temperatures of up to 19 degrees.

What can I bring into the venue?

For health and safety reasons, no camping or collapsible chairs are to be permitted in the venue, while organisers have encouraged the crowds to bring waterproof clothes and wellies in case of a downpour. However, no umbrellas are permitted.

Strict security checks will be in operation, while patrons are especially advised not to bring large bags and backpacks, as they may experience delays or be refused entry.

The full list of items prohibited from entering the venue include:

  • Animals (other than registered guide or hearing dogs)
  • Any item which may reasonably be considered for use as a weapon

UK riots latest: Thousands take part in anti-racism protests; petrol bomb thrown at mosque in 'racially motivated' incident

Police are on high alert this weekend amid concerns over more disorder breaking out as protests take place across the country. In Northern Ireland, police are investigating a "racially motivated" attack on a mosque.

That's all our coverage on this story for now.

Thousands of anti-racism protesters have descended on cities across the country - outnumbering anti-immigration demonstrators for the fourth day in a row.

Before we go, here's a recap of the main updates from the last 24 hours:

  • A court in Liverpool has heard how a 16-year-old stole £19,000 worth of vapes during riots in the city centre last week;
  • A petrol bomb was thrown at a mosque in Northern Ireland in an incident described by police as racially motivated. The mosque in Newtownards, County Down, was attacked at around 1am, with graffiti sprayed on its front door;
  • Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Tory councillor, has been remanded in custody ahead of a crown court appearance over publishing written material intended to stir up racial hatred;
  • Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has warned the impact of the riots on the judicial system will be felt for years to come;
  • The parents of six-year-old Bebe King, who was killed in the Southport stabbings, have paid tribute to their "precious daughter" and revealed her older sister saw the attack and escaped.

Police have been granted enhanced stop and search powers in part of Yeovil tonight.

Avon and Somerset Police said the powers allow officers to search people who they consider "at risk of violence", without reasonable suspicion.

The force said the technique has already resulted in arrests being made this evening.

It comes after it reported a small number of people had gathered in the grounds of a church for a peaceful demonstration.

Four men have been charged following the riots in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough last week.

Cleveland Police said a 24-year-old man had been charged with burglary over the unrest in Middlesbrough last Sunday.

Another 24 year-old was charged with violent disorder and a 27-year-old was charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker.

A 19-year-old was charged with violent disorder in relation to the riots in Hartlepool on 31 July.

All four men have been remanded in custody and are due to appear in court on Monday.

The impact of the riots could be felt for months or years to come, the justice secretary has warned.

Writing a piece for The Observer, Shabana Mahmood said the justice system has shown it can act swiftly, but its work has been made more difficult due to the state it was left in by the Conservatives.

Courts have been working extended hours to deal with rioters who were charged by police during the week-long disorder.

"The justice system has shown it can rise to this challenge. Should further criminality and disorder ensue, we will continue to deliver justice, until the last offender languishes in one of our jails," Ms Mahmood said.

"But we must make no mistake. Rising to this challenge has been made harder by doing so within the justice system we inherited from the Conservatives."

She pointed out that there are "record crown court backlogs" and prisons "close to overflowing".

"The impact of these days of disorder will be felt for months and years to come. They make the job of rebuilding the justice system harder," she added.

The parents of a six-year-old girl who was killed in the Southport stabbings have paid tribute to their "precious daughter" and revealed her older sister saw the attack and escaped.

Bebe King died along with nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar and Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, after the stabbings at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in the Merseyside town on 29 July.

The deaths of the three girls sparked anti-immigration protests and riots across UK towns and cities after false information circulated on social media that the attacker was an illegal migrant.

In a statement issued by Merseyside Police, Bebe's parents Lauren and Ben said their daughter "was full of joy, light, and love, and she will always remain in our hearts as the sweet, kind, and spirited girl we adore".

They revealed their nine-year-old older Genie witnessed the attack and managed to escape, saying: "She has shown such incredible strength and courage, and we are so proud of her.

You can read more about this story here ...

Photos of three men have been released by police as they continue to investigate the disorder that broke out in Whitehall last week.

Metropolitan Police said more than 100 arrests were made at the protest on Wednesday 31 July.

However, in the days that followed, a huge amount of footage and other evidence has been reviewed to try to identify outstanding suspects, it added.

It urged people who recognise any of the three men to get in touch or contact Crimestoppers.

Sky News understands Sir Keir Starmer has cancelled his holiday as protests continue to take place across the country.

Thousands of police officers have remained on duty today in case violence flared again.

But, for a fourth day in a row, anti-racism protesters far outnumbered far-right demonstrators in several areas.

A dispersal order has been enforced in Liverpool city centre today and will remain in place for 48 hours.

It also covers parts of Everton, Kensington, Vauxhall and Kirkdale.

Merseyside Police said it had been introduced "following incidents of disorder".

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Chris Taylor said: "This order will give officers on the ground the ability to direct people suspected of being involved in or planning criminality to leave the designated area for a period of 48 hours, and to arrest them if they return."

A Section 60 order, which gives officers enhanced stop and search powers, is already in place in the area.

"Both orders are extra tools at our disposal to help keep the public safe, and highly visible police patrols will enforce them in the next 48 hours," Mr Taylor said.

A total of 779 people have been arrested over rioting, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) has said.

Of those, 349 have been charged, it added.

Suspected rioters have continued to appear in court today, including the wife of a Tory councillor who has been accused of publishing written material intended to stir up racial hatred.

Lucy Connolly, 41, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning and did not enter a plea.

The NPCC said specialist officers have been tasked with pursuing suspected online offenders and so-called influencers, who they say are responsible for "spreading hate and inciting violence on a large scale".

Across the country, teams have been investigating "hundreds of leads".

"This abhorrent activity didn't happen by itself. Large crowds and gatherings didn't mobilise spontaneously," said Chief Constable Chris Haward, the NPCC lead for serious and organised crime.

"It was the result of dozens of so-called influencers, exploiting the outpouring of grief from the tragic loss of three young girls in Southport.

"They knowingly spread misinformation, stoked the flames of hatred and division and incited violence from the comfort of their own homes, causing chaos on other people's doorsteps."

The leader of Newcastle City Council has said he is "angry" that some residents were made to "feel unsafe" by "right wing agitators".

In a post on Facebook, Councillor Nick Kemp praised police for their work in the city, and urged people to stay "united".

Protests organised by Enough Is Enough have been taking place today, but passed without any violence or disorder breaking out.

"Northumbria Police have done a phenomenal job in preparing for today and their swift actions throughout the entire week have acted as a deterrent," Cllr Kemp said.

"Across the country, we have seen right wing agitators looking to divide our city and sow seeds of hatred. Today, Newcastle showed them what we are about.

"However, I am angry that they have made some of our residents feel unsafe. That their actions have caused doubt among those who call our city home."
