Socotra dragon blood tree

Socotra Photography Tour

The secret of eternal life shouldn’t be something that’s easy to stumble across and by cleverly hiding it out on Socotra the gods have certainly taken that thought to heart. At 3650 sq km Socotra is easily the largest Yemeni island and traditionally one of the most inaccessible. Lying 510km southeast of the mainland, the island has developed in near total isolation from the rest of the world. Rumoured to have once been a refuge for dragons and the Phoenix, it continues to provide a refuge for all manner of extraordinary fauna and flora, much of which is found nowhere else.

“The Galapagos of Indian Ocean”

Because of the number of its endemic plants and creatures, it’s been described as the ‘Galapagos of the Indian Ocean’. While this is a little optimistic, there is no denying that Socotra is a unique and otherworldly island. It’s the kind of place where people speak a language unknown to anyone else, where the knowledge of how to make fire by rubbing sticks together is still common and where the elderly recall days when money didn’t exist. – Lonely Planet

We advise you to be reasonably fit as we will spend most time outdoors, do short hikes and swim in the ocean. Wear comfortable sandals, a hat and apply sunscreen every day.

Socotra photography tour ITINERARY

This Socotra photography tour itinerary is an indication of what we will do. It is very flexible and we may change things to optimise travelling and photography.

Day 1: Dubai | Hadiboh | Delisha Beach

Upon your arrival at the airport, we will transport you to your hotel in Hadiboh, the largest town on Socotra, nestled against the backdrop of the Hajhir Mountains. Hadiboh is the island’s hub, equipped with modern conveniences like hot running water, stable electricity, and cell service, providing a comfortable base at places like the Summerlands Hotel. In the afternoon, we’ll head to Delisha Beach, just a half-hour drive away on good roads. Here, you can relax on pristine white sands, swim in the crystal-clear sea or the freshwater lagoon, and if you’re up for it, climb the towering sand dune for spectacular views of the beach. Delisha Beach, with its resident army of crabs, offers a perfect blend of leisure and adventure to start your Socotra experience.

Day 2: Qalansyia | Detwah Lagoon

Today, we’ll journey to the western part of Socotra to visit the quaint fishing town of Qalansyia. This “second city” of Socotra features traditional Socotri houses, narrow alleyways, and a bustling beach dotted with colorful fishing boats. After exploring Qalansyia, we will head to the nearby Detwah Lagoon, a marine protected area celebrated for its stunning landscape. Here, a brilliant white sandy spit curves into the turquoise Arabian Sea, while a serene blue lagoon forms a perfect backdrop, offering some of the best views on the island. This location is not only breathtaking but also provides excellent opportunities for swimming and exploring the vibrant marine life in the lagoon.

Day 3: Golden Sands of Shu’ab and Dolphins

After enjoying breakfast in Detwah, we’ll embark on a scenic boat trip to Shu’ab Beach, a remote part of Socotra’s west coast. During our journey, we may have the delightful opportunity to encounter Spinner Dolphins and watch flocks of cormorants in flight. Upon arrival at Shu’ab Beach, known for its pristine white sands and vibrant reefs, we will enjoy a lunch by the sea. The afternoon will be spent exploring this beautiful area, where the marine life is abundant and the surroundings are tranquil. After a day filled with natural wonders and wildlife, we’ll return to Detwah to relax and reflect on our adventures.

Day 4: Dixam Plateau and Firmhin

After breakfast, we will set out in our 4×4 vehicle to explore the Dixam Plateau, a prime location for encountering the iconic Dragon’s Blood trees. Here, we’ll learn about the resin of these trees, which is harvested and utilized by the locals. The plateau is also the habitat for the rare and endemic Socotra Bunting, with an estimated population of 1,000 pairs. We’ll embark on a hike down to Durhur Canyon, descending to the wadi for a lunch beside the refreshing freshwater pools, where you may take a swim.

In the afternoon, our adventure continues as we hike to Firmhin, the world’s largest forest of Dragon’s Blood trees. At Firmhin, we will visit a local couple in their Bedouin-style home. They will demonstrate how they collect and use the resin from the Dragon’s Blood trees, providing a deep insight into the cultural practices surrounding this unique species. This day promises a full immersion into the natural and cultural wonders of Socotra, from breathtaking landscapes to intimate cultural exchanges.

Day 5: Dixam Plateau and Skand Mountain Hike

Today offers a unique opportunity to explore the Dragon’s Blood trees perched along the edge of the canyon. For those seeking a more adventurous pursuit, we have arranged an optional 6-hour trek to Skand Mountain with a local guide. The journey will take us through the heart of the Hajhir Mountains, culminating at the summit of Skand, the tallest peak on the island. From this vantage point, you will be treated to panoramic views of the sea from both the north and south coasts of Socotra.

The region is rich in biodiversity, home to more than 150 endemic plant species. As we traverse the mountain, we will pass by striking rock formations and a variety of unique flora including bottle and cucumber trees. The trek not only promises breathtaking scenery but also the chance to interact with local inhabitants, offering a glimpse into their lives and the natural beauty that surrounds them. This day is designed for a deep dive into the natural wonders and cultural textures of Socotra.

Day 6: Homhil Protected Area

We will explore the enchanting Homhil Protected Area , capturing its unique landscapes through our lenses. Amidst the rugged terrain, we’ll photograph the distinctive Dragon’s Blood Trees, frankincense, and desert roses. Our journey will also take us to vibrant natural pools, where the interplay of water and rock creates serene, picturesque scenes. This visit promises a showcase of Socotra’s unique biodiversity and stunning natural beauty.

Day 7: Homhil and Infinity pool

We will dedicate the day to photographing the ethereal forests of Dragon’s Blood and Frankincense trees on Socotra Island. For those feeling adventurous, we will also embark on a 1-hour hike to the “Infinity Pool,” a secluded freshwater swimming hole where the stunning natural surroundings offer yet another beautiful photographic opportunity. This day promises a blend of tranquility and exploration, capturing the essence of Socotra’s unique landscapes.

Day 8: Arher Beach

We will spend our day at the stunning Arher Beach, where the dramatic intersection of massive sand dunes and the turquoise sea offers a breathtaking backdrop for photography. Early risers can capture the sublime beauty of sunrise, as the light plays over the dunes and sparkles on the waves. For those up for a little adventure, climbing the sand dunes provides a panoramic vantage point for sweeping coastal shots.

Day 9: Arher Beach and Ras Irisseyl

We will drive to Ras Irisseyl , the remote beach located on the northeast coast of Socotra. Our visit includes exploring a local fishing village where we can photograph the fishermen as they mend their nets or haul in their boats—a vibrant display of local life and culture. Additionally, we will have the unique opportunity to capture images of a whale skeleton that the waves have carried in from the Indian Ocean. This day offers a rich blend of cultural immersion and natural wonders, perfect for adding unique and compelling photos to our collection.

We will spend the rest of the day at Arher Beach, immersed in photographing its diverse natural wonders. Our lenses will focus on the majestic sand dunes, capturing their curves and contours under changing light. We’ll also aim to photograph the soaring Egyptian vultures overhead and the various shore and sea birds that frequent the area. Additionally, the playful ghost crabs scurrying across the sand will provide charming and humorous subjects.

Day 10: HADIBOH

We will start our day with one final sunrise at Arher Beach , capturing the early light as it illuminates the sand and sea. After soaking in the serene morning atmosphere, we’ll drive to Hadiboh , the capital of Socotra. In the afternoon, we’ll have time for some last-minute shopping, offering a chance to find unique local crafts and souvenirs. Our day concludes with dinner at a local restaurant, where you’ll have the opportunity to savor the distinctive flavors of Socotri bread, renowned for its delicious taste. This itinerary combines the natural beauty of Socotra with the vibrant culture and culinary delights of its capital.

Day 11: Departure from Socotra | Abu Dhabi

After an early breakfast, we will take to the streets of Hadiboh for a morning of photography. We’ll visit the local produce and fish market, a vibrant scene perfect for capturing genuine portraits and the bustling local life. After immersing ourselves in the colors and activities of the market, we will transfer to Socotra Airport for our flight back to Abu Dhabi. This final morning in Hadiboh provides a rich opportunity to document the daily rhythm and culture of Socotra before our departure.

ACCOMMODATION

In Socotra, hotels are not available at most places and we will be camping at well maintained campsites. All camping gear (tents, cooking supplies, mattresses, etc,) will be provided but we recommend that you bring your own sleeping bag.

Electricity is rare commodity in Socotra. We will have a diesel power generator available to charge every night. You will also be able to charge devices in the vehicles

You might be able to check email and use messaging services on the Socotra 3G network when you have signal. The mobile service is slow but we will be able to connect with the world and do most urgent matters. The Summerlands Hotel has wifi. It’s slow, but it works.

Visa requirements

A Yemeni visa is required for most nationalities wishing to visit Socotra. In order to obtain a visa for Socotra as a tourist, you will need to send us a good scanned copy of your passport which we will then forward to our tour operator in Socotra. The visa will be issued through the Yemeni Ministry of the Interior’s Immigration Department in Socotra.

Yemen is one of several Arab League countries that takes part in the boycott of travel to Israel. If you have any Israeli visas, passport stamps, arrival/departure cards, or Egyptian or Jordanian stamps issued on a border with Israel, you may be deported from Yemen.

At present, Socotra Island is perfectly safe to visit. Although there is still ongoing conflict on the mainland of Yemen and in Israel, Socotra Island is far removed from the troubled mainland and the Red Sea. To reach the island, we fly directly from Abu Dhabi, completely avoiding mainland Yemen. Socotra is a safe haven for travelers, with two flights a week from Abu Dhabi filled with foreign tourists. Next year, three flights per week are planned. The island is governed by the UAE, which places a strong emphasis on tourist safety.

Traveling around the island is also safe. The local population is extremely friendly and pleased to see tourists. There is little crime on the island, and we felt completely safe during our stay.

As a landscape and nature photographer, I will show you how to successfully capture the unique landscape on Socotra with your camera. I have already explored the island extensively and know where the best photo spots are.

Salem Socotra

Salem AlKeabany, Local Guide

Few people know Socotra as well as Salem. As a local, he spent his childhood here and has dedicated his entire life to the island. He will show us the most beautiful places on Socotra with passion and dedication.

Planned itinerary

Day 1: We meet together at the airport in Abu Dhabi. The Socotra flights always depart in the morning, so I recommend arriving a day in advance and possibly staying overnight in the airport hotel. Together we fly to the island (flight tickets are included in the price), where we are welcomed by our local guides and drivers. We will then head to the capital Habiboh for lunch. We will visit a shipwreck and spend the sunset on Di Hamri beach. Red rocks make a great photo motif for the sunset. Overnight stay at the campsite in a tent.

Day 2: We start the day with sunrise on the beach, followed by an exciting snorkeling experience. This place is particularly known for its species-rich and untouched coral reef, which gives us fascinating insights into the diverse underwater life. With a bit of luck, we may even see turtles. In the afternoon, we will drive to the eastern end, where the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet. Overnight stay at Camp Arher

Day 3: Once again we will climb the dunes and photograph the sunrise with a view of the Arabian Sea. At lunchtime we will explore the Hoq Cave. A mysterious cave that has not yet been fully explored. Here we can marvel at fascinating stalagmites and stalactites. We then make our way to Dixam, the home of the dragon's blood tree. We will photograph the sunset on the plateau. Overnight stay in Dixam

Day 4: We will spend sunrise on the edge of a canyon. Here we will photograph dragon's blood trees standing on the cliff with a fascinating view into the canyon. At lunchtime we will visit the dragon's blood tree conservation project. For sunset, we will take an adventurous road into the Firmihin forest to photograph the sunset.

Day 5: Sunrise in the Dragon's Blood Forest. At lunchtime we make our way to the south of the island, where we will drive to the wonderful Zaheq dunes. Those who wish can ride a camel across the dune landscape. Sunset at the dunes

Day 6: Sunrise at the Zaheq dunes. The journey then continues to the west of the island. Here we stop at the fishing village of Qualashia and climb a mountain. The view of the lagoon from the top is fabulous.

Day 7: An exciting boat trip to a secluded beach is on the agenda today. With a bit of luck, we may spot dolphins along the way. In the afternoon, we return to Habiboh, where we can take a look at the town and buy souvenirs.

Day 8: Sunrise at a large reef wreck. Transfer to the airport, farewell and return flight.

Our mission: to save the dragon's blood trees

The dragon's blood trees on Socotra are threatened with extinction. On this trip we would like to contribute to the protection of these important endemic trees. For every photo tour taken, 500 USD will be donated to the conservation of the dragon's blood trees.

The first photo trip to Socotra took place in April 2024. An incredible adventure with many great memories lies behind us.

Frequently asked questions

Is Socotra dangerous?

No, Socotra is an extremely peaceful destination. Although the island is part of Yemen, it is characterized by its remote location, which makes it safe. Socotra has a family atmosphere, the people are warm, hospitable and there is no crime. We will reach the island via Abu Dhabi and will never set foot on the Yemeni mainland.

Is it safe for women to travel to Socotra?

Yes, although there are few local women in public on Socotra due to the cultural conditions, female tourists can feel absolutely free and safe at all times.

What about the power supply? How can I charge my batteries?

You will only have electricity on Socotra in the city. I therefore recommend bringing enough camera batteries with you. We will charge the batteries from the cigarette lighter during our car trips. I will provide a voltage hike. It is advisable to bring additional power banks and possibly solar panels. I will be happy to help you if you have any questions.

Are there showers and toilets?

That depends on where we are. There are very basic showers and toilets at most campsites, but not everywhere. It is advisable to bring wet wipes as hygiene standards are not very high.

Do I have to share my tent with another participant?

No, we provide a separate tent for each participant.

Do I have to bring my own camping equipment?

No, our local partner provides the camping equipment (tent, mattress, pillow, sheets, blanket). For hygienic reasons, however, you can also bring your own bedding and tent.

What currency can I use to pay?

In Socotra, payment is made in Yemeni rials, but USD is often accepted as well. It is best to take some USD with you if you want to buy something. It is advisable to have the USD changed into Rial. We can do this locally in the capital Habiboh. There are no ATMs and card payments are not possible.

What photo equipment do I need?

You don't need a professional camera to come along! The main thing is that you have a camera that you can adjust manually. Cameras from any manufacturer are welcome.

If you don't have a camera, I can lend you one for this trip, please contact me in advance!

My personal recommendation:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • Wide-angle lens
  • Travel zoom
  • Telephoto lens
  • ND / polarizing filter

I am not a photographer, can I still take part in the trip?

Yes, with pleasure! Everyone who is interested in Socotra is welcome on my trip. The program is designed for photographers, but you are also welcome to join me and enjoy nature without a camera.

Is there an internet connection on Socotra?

If you are looking for a good internet connection, you are in the wrong place. A slow mobile phone connection is only available in the city and in a few places. We will spend most of our trip in nature, enjoying life and being offline. 😉

How do I get flights to Socotra?

The flights are included. There is currently no way to get Socotra flights online. I am in close contact with the locals and will organize round trip tickets from Abu Dhabi for you.

How do I get my visa?

The visa for Yemen is also included in the price. You will receive a digital copy shortly before your departure. We will then receive the original visa on site. Please make sure that your passport is valid.

Can I also travel to Socotra privately, without a photo group?

Yes, that is also possible. I would be happy to take care of the entire organization for your private trip to Socotra! I can book flights, visas etc. and organize everything you need. Please contact me about this, preferably via WhatsApp.

Any further questions? Feel free to contact me!

Socotra Island Photos

  • April 28, 2024

Socotra Island is a photographer’s paradise! This small, remote island offers diverse landscapes and seascapes, unique nature and wildlife, welcoming people, and dark night skies. Most photographers start their journey in the highlands, capturing the alien-like dragon blood trees and the quirky bottle trees in bloom. These subjects are indeed unique to Socotra. However, the true allure of Socotra Island for photography lies in its diversity. The Socotra Island photos below were all taken during my last two-week photography tour. With so many images to share, I have organized them into thematic galleries for easier viewing.

Bottle Tree Photos

The bottle tree, or Adenium obesum socotranum , thrives on Socotra Island. Its name reflects its bulbous, bottle-shaped trunk, which stores water to survive in dry conditions. These trees produce vibrant pink and white flowers, brightening the stark landscape. Like the dragon blood tree, the bottle tree plays a key role in Socotra’s ecology. It offers habitat and nourishment to local wildlife. This species highlights the rich biodiversity of Socotra and emphasizes the need for ongoing conservation efforts to protect this unique ecosystem from environmental threats.

Dragon Blood Tree Photos

The dragon blood tree, or Dracaena cinnabari , stands out on Socotra Island with its unique umbrella-shaped canopy that captures moisture in its arid environment. Native to Socotra, these trees secrete a dark red resin known as “dragon’s blood,” used historically in dyes, medicines, and varnishes. Currently, the species is vulnerable due to climate change impacts like reduced rainfall and fog. Ecologically, dragon blood trees are essential, offering shelter to diverse species and preventing soil erosion, thus playing a crucial role in preserving the island’s biodiversity.

Socotra Island Photos of Wildlife

Socotra Island hosts a rich and diverse population of wild animals, making it quite easy to spot and photograph many species. During our two-week visit, I frequently enjoyed photographing wildlife. Even though it wasn’t the main focus of our trip, I managed to capture some great shots. Among the animals I photographed were the Caspian tern, spinner dolphins, hermit crabs, ghost crabs, Egyptian vulture, orb-weaver spider, southern grey shrike, Socotra (or Somali) starling, Socotra sparrow, laughing dove, grey heron, brown booby, Socotra cormorant, and others.

Socotra Island Photos of People

Photographing the people of Socotra is a joy! Most are genuinely happy to see you and don’t mind being photographed. Often, locals even ask to have their photo taken. However, one major rule is to avoid photographing adult women.

Socotra’s population is about 60,000, most of whom are closely related to people from South Yemen. A few have genes from Africa and Asia, but everyone takes pride in being Socotran. The native language is spoken widely, although Arabic is becoming increasingly common. But when you ask anyone whether they identify as Yemeni or Socotran, the answer is always the same!

Places of Socotra

Two weeks to explore and photograph Socotra Island is plenty, allowing you to cover all the highlights as well as some lesser-known and remote locations. The Socotra Island photos below were taken at a variety of places, including Homhil Protected Area, Arher Beach and Sand Dunes, Ras Erissel, Skand Mountains, Dixam Plateau, Dirhur Canyon, Firmin Forest, Momi Hills, Dihamri Marine Reserve, Qalansiyah Village, Shoab Beach, Detwah Lagoon, Zahek Sand Dunes, Degub Cave, Hadibo, and many other spots we visited along the way.

And here are some other photos of Socotra that I wasn’t able to include in the above galleries. They are still cool to share though!

“The Socotra Archipelago in Yemen has long been a land of mystery. Over the centuries travellers returned from the Indian Ocean isles with bizarre tales - of trees yielding dragon's blood and cucumbers, forest of frankincense, and towering pinnacles in the mist.".

  • Fishing Tours to Socotra – Socotra offers some of the best and untouched fishing in the world. We can arrange fishing tours to Socotra to suit all needs and budgets. • Arrive 3:00am into Aden Airport, and depart again at 7:00am
  • Arrive in Habibu, Socotra at 10:00am. Upon arrival you’ll be greeted by our local Socotri guide who will accompany you for the trip.
  • Begin your drive to Ayhaft Canyon National Park where you can enjoy a short walk to stretch your legs after the flight and lunch.
  • Continue to Delisha Beach – a beautiful white beach next to the sea and a lagoon where you can enjoy the sunset and beverages
  • Dinner at the Delish Tourist Complex.
  • Overnight in your centrally located hotel in Hadibu

Day 3 – Tuesday – Homhil National Park – Arher

  • After breakfast you’ll head for Homhil National Park – famous for its Dragon’s Blood trees, which cannot be found anywhere else outside of Socotra. But that’s not all: many other impressive forms of flora like the bottle tree and the cucumber plant can be found here. After an hour’s walk you’ll reach an amazing crystal-clear pool with a view over the whole southern part of Socotra.
  • For those up for a hike may descend from the mountain on foot. Others may walk back to the car and be driven down towards the beach.
  • Drive to Arher
  • Arher is the meeting point of freshwater and saltwater, creating an impressive natural phenomenon. Over here you’ll find some giant sand dunes.
  • Free to explore around the area on your own. Those up to the challenge may climb the 300 meter high sand dune found here.
  • Dinner and overnight in Arher.

Day 4 – Wednesday – Arher – Hoq’s Cave/Raw Ersil – Dihamri Marine Protected Area

  • Breakfast, then after waking up next to the beach you may choose between 2 morning activities:
  • A steep hike to Hoq’s Cave (4 hours). This is one of the most important spots on the island. OR:
  • Be driven to Raw Erisel, the meeting point of the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean and walk from there back to the camp.
  • Once everybody has returned from their chosen activity, you’ll have lunch and drive to Dihamri Marine Protected Area. While the beach may not be so spectacular here, in the sea you’ll find a great diversity of flora and fauna.
  • Here, diving and snorkeling are available (rental available, extra cost) or you can also decide to join the local fishermen for sea expedition!
  • You’ll bring back freshly caught fish from the sea and prepare for the special dinner celebration in Dihamri.
  • Overnight in Hadibu Eco Campsite and partying!

Day 5 – Thursday – Dixsam

  • Breakfast and begin drive to the Dixsam Plateau. This is the most famous spot for the Dragon’s Blood trees, where you can also spot many rare birds.
  • Along the drive you’ll stop for photos at Shehahon’s viewpoint
  • You will have lunch in the village of Dixsam. Here you’ll meet the head of the village who will happily tell more about his functions here and the situation of the people living on Socotra Island.
  • Stop at Wadi Derhur where you can take a walk. This used to be a famous camping spot, but sadly, after a major storm everything was damaged.
  • Hike through the beginning of Fermahin – a forest of Dragon’s Blood trees.
  • Tonight you’ll mingle with the people of a typical Socotri village!
  • Dinner and overnight at a homestay in Dixsam.

Day 6 – Friday – Dixsam – Zahek & Hayf – Dagub – Amak – Dixsam

  • Breaking and head out for a walk through the village accompanied by your new local friends, including a visit to the local garden, where they try to plant new Dragon’s Blood trees.
  • Drive towards the Southern coast at Nogud.
  • Explore the cave of Dagub.
  • Stop at the big sand dunes of Sahek and Hayf at Amak Beach, where you can swim in the sea.
  • Lunch at the cave or at Amak Beach, depending on the sun.
  • Return back to Dixsam for dinner and overnight, surrounded by Dragon’s Blood trees.

Day 7 – Saturday – Qalansiya – Shuaab – Detwah

  • Breakfast and early morning drive to Qalansiya, the second largest city on the island.
  • You’ll take an half an hour long boat trip to Shuaab, passing by huge rock formations and flocks of birds. If you are lucky you might spot a few dolphins!
  • Relax at the most beautiful beach of Socotra and meet the local goat herder, guarding his flock against the lupine hordes.
  • Lunch on the beach.
  • Upon returning to Qalansiya you’ll drive to Detwah Lagoon.
  • Here you’ll make your camp and you can walk around the big lagoon and see the amazing landscape.
  • Located by the lagoon is a hidden cave where Ellai, famously known as the Socotra caveman spends his days fishing, preparing aloe vera and goat skins. He’s incredibly welcoming to your and will show you what he days on a daily basis.
  • Overnight camping at Detwah Eco-campsite.

Day 8 – Sunday – Hadibu

  • Breakfast and return to Hadibu.
  • You’ll spend the day on a city tour of Hadibu  and learn more about life in Yemen.
  • Your first stop will be the women market (including its spice market) where you will get to see the kind of goods people barter on the islands.
  • You will then head to the fish market. Here the fishermen bring a cornucopia of sea creatures and try to sell them to make ends meet. This place can get very lively and you might catch some auctions!
  • You’ll then head to the khat market; it is here that the stimulating narcotic — all the rage in Eastern Africa — is sold.
  • You will stop by the streets of the manufacturers of doors; these artists make ornate doors like those that can be found around many middle-eastern countries. They really make an art of it as each door is unique and is supposed to represent the family that lives inside the house it protects.
  • You finish your day trip popping by a local school where you meet students, as well as the teachers, and interact with them for a possible impromptu English lesson
  • Tonight is your last night in the faraway paradise, time to celebrate.
  • Overnight in our hotel in Hadibu

Day 9 – Monday – Habidu – Cairo (Egypt)

  • Breakfast, peaceful morning before catching your flight back to Cairo to board your 11:00am flight on Yemenia Airways.
  • Arrive into Aden at 2:00pm, departing again at 6:00pm.
  • Arrive into Cairo at 11:30pm at Cairo International Airport Terminal 1.
  • Tour concludes

Research trip with Discover Socotra Spot 3 bird species previously undocumented  on Socotra

Members of a research expedition organized by Discover Socotra and the Ornithological Society of the Middle East in November 2021 managed to spot three birds species never before documented  on Socotra, one of which is even a first for the entire Arabian region. The expedition initially set out to focus on the outer island population of Socotra cormorants ( Phalacrocorax nigrogularis ), yet while on the archipelago, members of the team managed to spot:

Pomarine jaegers ( Stercorarius pomarinus ) Never before documented on Socotra

A Somali fiscal ( Lanius somalicus ) Never before documented in Arabia

A White-breasted waterhen ( Amaurornis phoenicurus ) Never before documented on Socotra

A Socotra Tour Review & Guide to Tourism on the Island

Dragon blood trees on a tour of Socotra Island Yemen

🐲 The unique island of Socotra, Yemen – land of the Dragon Blood tree – an ideal tour destination for an intrepid travel lover and nature enthusiast ! And chances are, you didn’t land here by accident. I’m going to take a punt and say you’ve heard of the hidden island of Socotra and may be curious about the possibility of tourism to this strange land.

I’ve been where you are, interest piqued by Nat Geo photos of an exotic island , an alien like tree, sandy white beaches and the bluest water you’ve ever laid eyes on . What’s more, the country to which this island belongs is seldom visited by tourists. Curiosity has probably got the better of you, just like it did me.

And at a quick glance, you’ll quickly see that Socotra island offers the perfect balance of adventure travel tourism AND awe-inspiring nature. From beach time, to hiking, cave exploration, snorkelling or diving, this little island packs one heck of a punch! It’s no wonder photographers and adventure travel junkies flock to Socotra for a glimpse of its unique landscape and compelling beauty.

So now it’s your turn and we’ve made this next step easy for you. Just read this post to narrow down the best tour operator and then book your Socotra expedition of a lifetime .

Sounds clichĂŠ but trust me… I exaggerate not.  Socotra in just two words is  Next Level !

Below I tell you all about what to expect on a guided tour of Socotra, including tour prices along with a discount code . As well as some essential travel tips you should know. So read on for all the juicy details.

Table of Contents

How Tourism in Socotra Works

Dragon blood tree overlooking the Infinity Pool on Socotra Island tour

We travelled to Socotra, post covid, from Abu Dhabi with Air Arabia. But note: you won’t find flights to Socotra through booking platforms online.

On arrival we quickly gathered a better understanding of how tourism in Socotra functions.  External travel agents are connected with internal locally certified tourism companies.  The external operator arranges everything via the internal local Yemeni operator, including visas, flights, accommodation… the whole nine yards.

At this point there are only a few local providers and you can only enter and travel within Socotra with their sponsorship and guidance.   Essentially, they invite you, arrange your tourist visa and are then responsible for you on the island.

This is why tourism in Socotra is only possible with a guided tour. Which when you consider the unique landscape and thus fragile ecosystem, this guided system is a necessity in protecting the island’s unique and rare biodiversity.

To Camp or Not to Camp?

socotra photo tour

You essentially have a couple of options regarding accommodation. When thinking about your tour to Socotra you need to decide if you prefer a bed and shower… or NOT! The alternative is camping.

And if you ask me, I thoroughly recommend the second option.  Camping is where the adventure is AT. Your guides take care of everything too, they pitch your tent, prepare your mattress and so it’s up to you to simply pick the exact spot to park your tent.

Most of the camping is on the beach and are in designated camp sites.   The only downside of this is the bathroom situation. But in my opinion, this is a once in a lifetime experience. And if it means you have to crap in the wilderness once or twice, well it’s a small price to pay for getting to sleep on some of the most stunning beaches in the world.

AND if the thought of camping literally scares the crap out of you, then read our packing list linked below. We share some tips on how to make the experience a little less daunting and little more comfortable.

The last night of your Socotra tour you will be taken to stay in a hotel. We stayed at the Heathrow Hotel which is across the road from the airport. And I’ve got to say it, but the shower and bed were a welcome sight after six nights of camping.

Read: Our post on packing essentials for Socotra !

Hotels in Hadibo

Bottle tree blooms with pink flowers on Socotra Island tour

However, if camping still doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then go for the hotel option of course. When you stay here the driver and guide pick you up and drop you off each day. This means that you stay in the main town of Hadibo (the capital of Socotra) and tour the sights by day . Which means, you need to be okay with a couple of longer days road trippin.

According to our guide there are a few hotels in Hadibo and they range between 2-3 stars and so they are very simple. Actually, I think what makes Socotra a special place to visit is the lack of 5 star hotels. I feel it preserves tourism in Socotra and protects the off the beaten track experience. Tourism in Socotra feels raw, real and as a result way more authentic.

Note: We met other travellers during our visit who opted for a hotel stay. While I know they did enjoy their bed and shower at the end of the day, I couldn’t help but pick up an element of regret in their conversation, that they had not camped.

How the Guided Tours Work

socotra photo tour

Your guide and driver are there at the airport to meet you on arrival.  And it’s straight in!  The tour of Socotra island immediately gets underway… so prepare to be wowed.

You are assigned a cook who will serve you three delicious meals a day , consisting mostly of biryani (rice dish), fresh fish, salad and flat bread. And breakfast is usually beans, eggs of some kind and flat breads. The food was simple but very good and at no stage will you go hungry!

You will likely stay in a different campsite each night as Socotra is surprisingly quite large. And given that each corner of the island has something uniquely different to offer, it makes sense that you will travel an hour or two between locations, setting up a new camp each time. I would highly recommend you don’t worry about the itinerary too much, just sit back relax and let the wonder unfold infront of you.

Ofcourse each tour provider operates slightly differently and so my experience of Socotra is based on our tour with Inertia Network . Read – Who to Book Your Tour With below for our tour review.

💁‍♀️ Socotra Travel Tour Tip: If you prefer to avoid crowds let your guide know and they can find ways of making this happen. For example taking you to more remote locations and arriving to the hot spots earlier or later. We asked for a couple of unique requests and our guide was terrific at fitting this into our tour. And in fact, these became some of our favourite experiences on our Socotra tour.

Who to Book Your Tour With ?

Swimming in a wadi on Socotra Island, Yemen.

I really did my homework before booking as I wanted to ensure that I found the right tour operator.  If we were going to make the trip to Socotra, we wanted to do it right.  I emailed many, asked many questions (as I always do) and finally came across one that ticked all the boxes. I stumbled across a series of itineraries and micro-group tours to Socotra with Inertia Network and knew that I had found the right tour provider for us.

There were three main things I was looking for… company ethos around sustainability, group tour size and last but not least… cost.  But let’s breakdown how Inertia Network met these prerequisites for me.

Get in touch with the friendly team at Inertia and start planning your tour?

Reason Number One – Ethos

In awe of a dragon blood tree in Socotra Island, Yemen

This is such an important one for our little free range family.  Just to be clear, we don’t take pre-organized tours often, it’s just not how we tend to travel.  But after reading Inertia’s website from top to bottom I had an inkling that they could be the right provider for us.

After emailing back and forth, I felt that they shared a similar vision around travel that we go in search of.  The kind of travel where you tread gently in off beat destinations, looking for authentic experiences . You know the kind of travel I’m talking about right?

Inertia Network take travellers on expeditions, rather than tourists on holiday if you catch my drift.  They seek to protect and preserve the destinations they visit making travel more sustainable in the long run in terms of conservation and impact.  Box one – tick.

Reason Number Two – Group Size

Tourists visit the sand dunes on a tour of Socotra

I reiterate we don’t often book tours!  Booking a large organized group tour gives me anxiety.  So, we weren’t wanting to be lumped in with a group feeling like just another number in the herd.  And we were not, it was the two of us, a driver and a guide.

I can’t tell you how happy we were that we had this super intimate experience within Socotra .  We saw many large groups travelling in convoys.  Strangers grouped together and limited essentially to locations that could cater for larger groups.

While we could pick up and move on whenever we were ready, sleep in more remote locations like under the dragon blood trees, see more of the island and go to places that interested us, just us. Box two – tick.

🧭 If you are the kind of traveller that enjoys group travel, I can tell you that Inertia Network plan some awesome micro-group itineraries – check them out here !

Reason Number Three – Cost

Tourist campsite in Firmin among the dragon blood trees in Socotra Island

Visiting Socotra is bucketlist stuff, it’s obviously super unique and that makes travel here more expensive than your average holiday destination.

After rounding in a number of quotes, I discovered that Inertia Network not only would give us what we needed in terms of experience, but also that their rates were very reasonable.  Basically, they provided us with a one week all-inclusive bucketlist expedition at a fair and competitive price .  Box three – tick.

Inertia Network and Expeditions Beyond Socotra

socotra photo tour

If Inertia Network sounds like they might tick your boxes too, then you should also check out their other expeditions here .

And if you are wondering which trip we took – it was the 8 day Biodiversity Highlights Trip . They have two trips coming up in 2024, one in February and one in April. With micro groups no bigger than 6 people, and a price tag of $1600 USD, you are in for a trip of a lifetime .

The team always have SUPER unique and exciting travel expeditions up their sleeve… their intrepid adventures go way WAY beyond the main tourist trail. Basically, you should expect perspective changing type of travel but also the opportunity to meet really cool people at the same time.

🌱 It wasn’t until we got to Socotra that I was truly grateful for doing the research in finding the right tour operator.  Read on to find out more about our travels, sustainable tourism in Socotra and the benefits of booking with Inertia .

Sustainable Tourism in Socotra

socotra photo tour

In a nutshell… we had the most amazing time in Socotra on our tour. It is just such a wildly unique destination. In our opinion, Socotra needs to be on your travel radar if you love off beat travel. But at the same time it needs to be protected.

And so I urge anyone planning a trip to Socotra to choose a responsible tour operator who has sustainability and conservation clearly in their sights .

Following many in depth conversations with Mohammed the local tour operator, I was confident that our decision making, was well justified. You see, I love to get down to the nitty gritty and ask all those uncomfortable questions that need to be approached. I always want to ensure that our travel along with the tour providers that we recommend, do not negatively impact, or come at a cost to the local infrastructure, community and environment.

These conversations with Mohammed lead to a deeper understanding of the efforts he has personally taken to protect his homeland of Socotra. His goals for his island are based on several foundations. Cleaning the streets of Hadibo (the capital) and finding more efficient waste management systems, increasing access to education for all, better opportunities around gender equality and exploring new methods around and improving current agricultural practices.

💧 Promoting sustainable travel is at the centre of why I show up here!

When You Support Local

A birds eye view over beach and crystal blue water on Socotra - a must see place on an island tour

I was very excited to hear that in 2020 Mohammed founded a school in Hadibo in which they accept international volunteers to assist with education and administration.

We also discovered that 20% of the tour profits go to supporting the school and teachers employed . Lessons around computer studies, english and other classes that will ultimately support local quality of life. A tour of the school gave me increased confidence that we were in good hands and that as a result of our booking with Inertia the locals were benefiting.

When asked about his thoughts on the future of tourism in Socotra, Mohammed expressed his hopes that 5 star hotels would not make it to the island. An opinion that we share.

From our perspective tourism in Socotra would benefit from the continued current sustainable approach towards guided tours and camping on beaches. But only time will tell, how tourism will evolve in Socotra and in the meantime supporting local tour guides such as Mohammed, has a positive impact for the Socotri people.

Thank you for a well informed piece, A bit of an unusual question but I will have my laptop with me. Will it be safe to travel with or would you recommend leaving it in a locker in Abu Dhabi airport for the duration?

Hi Mick, thanks for your question. Not unusual at all… we took our laptop so that we could offload our photos every day. So from our experience, it was perfectly safe.

Love this, I’ve been wanting to visit Socotra since 2011, but have never made it/the internal conflict in Yemen.

Did you feel safe at all times? I’d like to go with my boyfriend, and as a gay man, I worry about how that would go. I’m considering asking other friends to join us in order to offset the vibe, but TBD. Let me know what your thoughts are!

August 10, 2023 at 12:22 am

Hi DJ, oh you must go… it’s one of the best travel experiences you’ll ever have! In terms of safety, we felt safe 100% of the time, but I couldn’t comment on how gay people would be received. In saying this, we have lived in the Middle East for years, and like all Islamic countries, you would just need to be mindful about what information you share openly and how you act in public. The same would go for my husband and I… we wouldn’t be openly affectionate or touch in public, as this is generally frowned upon, particularly in stricter countries. I know this doesn’t answer your question but I hope it helps 🙂

But when her Out of This World: The Missy Elliott Experience Tour touched down on Thursday night, Aug. 15, at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, it seemed that she was just waiting until she could get it right.

And damn near perfect at that.

The entire tour package offers a finely curated celebration of the Virginia-born multi-hyphenate’s career, a ground-breaking, impactful tenure that made her the first female MC to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in 2023). The support acts — Timbaland, Busta Rhymes and Ciara, who all appeared during Elliott’s set as well — are all longtime collaborators. And Elliott’s 70-minute set was simply a delight, a masterclass of performance and stagecraft that righted the many indulgent wrongs we’ve witnessed in previous pop diva spectacles.

Offering more than two dozen tracks from her five studio albums and 2019 EP “Iconology” along with a few covers, Elliot’s show was refreshingly concise and fat-free, with energy that never flagged even during the brief moments she wasn’t on stage — and that didn’t always mean she was changing costumes, either, though she went through about a half-dozen over the course of the show.

With a cast of 20 dancers, a hype man, an hidden live band (it was shown on the video screens during “Up Jumps Da Boogie”) and a Willy Wonka-esque performer during segues, Elliott’s concert was a Cirque du Soleil/steampunk/”Mystery Science Theater 3000″ mash-up, with a nearly overwhelming onslaught of inventive visuals and as much movement as an Olympics’ worth of gymnastic floor exercises. It was light on chest-thumping braggadocio or excessive verbiage; Elliott — who obscured her face most of the night under hats and RoboCop helmets — instead let her songs deliver messages of empowerment and inspiration (along with a few booty calls, of course).

Missy Elliott performed Thursday night, Aug. 15, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit (Photo by Derek Blanks with crowdMGMT)

Four animated faces of Missy welcomed the near-capacity crowd on the massive rear-stage video screen, ushering us into a space-age adventure whose special effects included set pieces (an underground sewage system for one segment, a corn field during “Pass That Dutch”), lasers and jets of fire. Several platforms elevated Elliott and her cohorts at various points of the show, and during “Gossip Folks” she and two dancers hovered above the crowd on a saucer-shaped mini-stage.

The ensemble bounced around on Pilates balls during “I’m Better,” and towards the end of the show Elliott walked the diameter of the arena floor, stopping to hug fans — and even returning shortly after to embrace a few that she missed. She also paid a warm tribute to the late Detroit singer Aaliyah, for whom Elliott co-wrote songs during the mid-90s, just before releasing her own debut album.

And Elliott of course celebrated her history with her tour mates, welcoming theme ach to the stage during a show-closing trilogy of Timbaland & Magoo’s “Up Jumps Da Boogie,” Rhymes’ “Touch It” and “Lose Control” a Ciara collaboration that found the two spitting lines together at the edge of the stage.

It was so exciting, satisfying and enormously entertaining that it made you wonder why Elliott hasn’t done this before — and, more importantly, hoping she’ll do it again, and soon.
