Don’t just take it from us! Read reviews from our customers.

Great bargain and excellent tour. I cannot think of any must-see stops in greater LA that were missed. Our guide, Aron, was patient, knowledgeable and entertaining. He made adjustments to the schedule to personally accommodate the desires of our group. Ours was a very international group representing England, New Zealand and Canada. If you are looking for a quiet tour without interacting with others, this isn’t for you. But if you don’t take yourself seriously, enjoy a laugh, and don’t mind people staring as you drive around in this colorful bus you couldn’t make a better choice….

With only one day to see the LA area, my husband and I decided to book this tour. We looked over A LOT of other tours online, but we found this one to be the most well-rounded. After having now completed the tour, I can attest that it didn’t disappoint!

Our guide, Jake, was HILLARIOUS! He was fun, kept the tour upbeat, and made sure to answer any questions we had. A total rock star! The time spent at each stop wasn’t necessarily long, however we spent the most time at the places that were most interesting – the grove, the strip, and the Griffith Observatory.

After the tour, we received an email asking for feedback. To which, they actually responded to – you don’t see that these days so kudos to them! We’re excited to hear that they’re looking into providing different tours.

We’d love to book with them again, but wouldn’t want to do the one we already did (great general/overview tour). We’re hoping to narrow do one in future that appeals to our specific interests – that way, we can spend more time at the spots we’d enjoy most 🙂

Our family of 7 (2 adults and 5 kids aged 6-15) had a wonderful time on this tour. We started and ended in Santa Monica and travelled all over the city, with several stops to explore. We visited Venice, drove by the stars’ homes, stopped at Graystone, Griffith Park, Hollywood Boulevard, and a lunch stop at the Farmer’s Market. Our guide, Kimeko, was knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining, The tour lasted from 9:45 until about 5pm, and our guide was full of information, yet gave us some time to just take in the scenery, She welcomed questions. And yes, the price was $75. I think that many people may suspect that this tour may be inferior to others due to the low price. The Rastabus is simply a great tour which just happens to be a great deal.

My husband and I were staying in Palm Springs for a week and decided to take a day trip out to LA to see the main sites. Having only one day in LA, we decided to look for a tour that would show us the most sites. This tour did that and a lot more! Jake was an amazing tour guide!! Very funny and entertaining and played amazing music the whole time (we regret not asking him for his playlist afterwards!). He showed us everything we could’ve wanted to see and also had so many stories to share about his own personal experiences with stars in the area. His knowledge of the area was also very helpful when we had to take detours due to traffic. He always kept the bus moving and got us everywhere quickly. It was fun to hear some of crazy hollywood stories about the stars and see sites that most tours woudn’t tell you about (“this is where Lindsey Lohan crashed her car”, “this is where Mel Gibson was arrested for drunk driving”!). Even though it was an action packed day, nothing felt rushed. We had sufficient time to explore Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Blvd and Griffith Park on our own. I still can’t believe how cheap this tour is as we would’ve paid a lot more for it! Even though we only had the one day in LA, we really feel like we saw everything there. I will recommend this tour to anyone going to LA. Thanks for a fantastic day Jake!!

We went on the LA tour with Rastabus and thoroughly enjoyed it. The bus was not jam packed like others ive been on so everyone talked to each other. The guide was knowledgeable and constantly kept us informed on where we were going and info about the place – he also answered any questions anyone had. We pretty much covered all the spots that everyone wanted to see and our driver did ask if there was anything in particular we wanted to see then to just let him know, so that was good. We stopped at each place for just the right amount of time, not too long to get bored but just long enough to see what was needed. The trip lasted the whole day and i would definitely recommend if you are visiting LA.

A great tour, takes in all the LA sites and a bit extra. Kimeko picked us up from our hotel and then deviated to show myself and 2 teenage daughters The Venice Canals. We met up with others at Santa Monica and were greeted with coffee and doughnuts, then went on to Venice Beach. Following this stopped at Rodeo Drive and the farmers market (for amazing fish tacos). Off then to Hollywood spotting lots of celebs homes, Griffith Park (Hollywood Sign) and then Sunset Strip. Definitely one of the highlights of our time in California and because the bus is small you get to know your fellow travelers too. Would do it all again

A full day tour…This is the best value for tours in LA. I booked this for the first day of my vacation in LA. The tour takes you to the most popular areas… the stars homes, Beverly Hills, Hollywood etc. etc… with stops along the way to get out and take pictures and explore. I had planned a day trip to Beverly Hills, but the stop on the tour was all I really needed … gave me an extra day on my vacation. The tour is very personable, our guide was witty and there was 9 of us from 4 different countries all laughing and joking. You see the other tours going by, everyone looking like statues with headphones on. I’d book it quick!

For anyone that really wants to see LA this is the tour for you. Sit back, relax and and love it. Tour through all the hot spots in LA and enjoy the sights! The tour of LA was great and i believe the Segway tour of venice beach and santa monica was just as good! I never knew how much a fun a segway was (even though you do look funny). Both of of my tour guides for both tours were great. i was a little nervous at first coming to LA – but this company made me feel very safe and secure. I left my camera on the bus and they hand delivered it later in the night to my hotel for free. It shows the really care.

Tooling around LA on the Rastabus is a great way to be introduced to LA in a short amount of time. Our guide Matt was a whole lot of fun, and very knowledgeable about the city. You get to see all the main tourist destinations, and some gossip on some of the celebrities who live there. The Farmer’s Market is a great place to stop and have lunch, and it is great to start the day in beautiful Santa Monica. If you are only in LA for a short time, this is a really good way to make sure you don’t miss anything.

Based upon tripadvisor reviews I booked a tour. This tour could not have been better!!!! Our tour guide was so good I brought back lunch for him at a restaurant he recommended. Our tour guide showed so much enthusiasm it was like we were the first group he took (which we were not we later learned). This is a tour you will enjoy and learn from.

Check Out Some Of Our Reviews Of Our Los Angeles Tour!

Our driver, Joseph, was outstanding. He's very knowledgeable and has lots of stories about the buildings, the history and the people. He picked us up on time, and shared great tidbits on our ride from Newport Coast to LA. Yes we were a bit time constrained - however it's a great introduction for deciding what to visit later. The lunch stop was good fun - so many choices! Joseph provided stories about the celebrities on Mulholland Drive - some homes were WOW and others small and what one would see in many developments. As he pointed out its the ZIP code that sets the price! The stop in Beverly Hills gave us time to see the stars in the sidewalk - also also venture a short way into Rodeo Drive. Great experience - and I was delighted to learn Best Coast Tours also does San Diego! I am taking my granddaughters there next month and we'll experience another tour with Joseph - thanks to their flexibility is scheduling!

It's always hard to fit in all that you would like in one day. However, Best Coast Tours did all that and in a safe manner. The van was clean and the driver was very informative and fun. He would interject stories of stars and personal experiences of his own, having grown up in the area. I would do another tour with Best Coast anytime.

Tour was 9-6; Saw everything you could wish to see - Beverly Hills, Hollywood sign, Farmers Market, Rodeo Drive etc. The driver was knowledgable. It was a great value. We never would have been able to see so much, navigate the highways and directions. It was an excellent experience.

We did the trip from OC on Friday. We have been visiting LA for 40 years for Disneyland etc but never really travelled to some of the places on this tour.It was great to do it all in one day and Joe, our driver was very knowledgeable about the city and places.

We toured both LA and Orange County beaches with Best Coast Tours last week. Joe and Michael are outstanding hosts providing historical information regarding the sites along with just the right mix of pop culture. Not only are the extremely knowledgeable about the area, they are fun! We are so glad to have picked Best Coast Tours to introduce us to California.

10 Bucket List Things To Do With 72 Hours In Los Angeles

  • Visit Santa Monica Beach for pristine sands, outdoor exercise areas, and the iconic Santa Monica Pier with its thrilling attractions and delicious dining options.
  • Explore the Getty Center in Brentwood for its renowned European art collections, stunning gardens, and the opportunity to visit the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu.
  • Experience the beauty of the historic Venice Canals, stroll through the picturesque man-made canals, and enjoy the charm of this five-star-rated attraction in Venice, Los Angeles.

To say the city of Los Angeles is big would be a major understatement. And while "gargantuan" is a bit closer to the truth, it still doesn't succinctly describe the sheer magnitude of the sprawling Southern California city. Spanning a little over 500 square miles , the bustling metropolitan area is certainly teeming with people. In fact, it's the second most populous city in the U.S. — trounced only by New York City. It's also brimming with attractions, from its sandy shores to its alluring Hollywood hot spots.

Although a five- to seven-day trip would be best for seeing all that the city has to offer, visitors can still pack in quite a bit of fun in just 72 hours. From famous Los Angeles landmarks to thrilling theme parks, here are some of the best things to do in Los Angeles during a short three-day getaway.

Visit The World Famous Santa Monica Beach

L.A. is renowned for its beautiful coastlines. But Santa Monica Beach is without a doubt one of the best beaches in Los Angeles to visit in California . It has outdoor exercise areas, bike and running paths, and, of course, pristine sands perfect for sunbathing and beach picnics.

But, its crown jewel is undoubtedly the Santa Monica Pier, which juts out over the Pacific Ocean for all to admire.

  • Address: 200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401
  • Hours: Santa Monica Beach is open from sunrise to sunset

In addition to breathtaking views, the Santa Monica Pier offers a variety of fun attractions, including a Ferris wheel, carousel, and roller coaster, plus numerous restaurants , food carts, and souvenir shops.

See Iconic Masterpieces At The Getty Center

Nestled in L.A.'s upscale Brentwood neighborhood, the Getty Center is actually one of the surprisingly free things that visitors can do in Los Angeles . The museum is renowned for its European art collections, which include paintings, sculptures, and photography that span from the Middle Ages to the present day. The museum's immaculate gardens are also worth seeing.

  • Address: 1200 Getty Center Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90049
  • Hours: Open Tuesdays to Fridays and Sundays from 10 am to 5:30 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 8 pm

Time permitting, be sure to squeeze in a visit to the Getty's Malibu location: the Getty Villa Museum. In addition to luscious gardens, it offers visitors a variety of Roman and Greek antiquities to see, which are housed in a recreated Roman house.

Visit The Historic Venice Canals

Tourists don't have to make the trek across the pond to take a stroll through Venice. Los Angeles' historic Venice Canals will certainly do the trick. The five-star-rated attraction is perfect for first-timers visiting Los Angeles and features four man-made canals that are even prettier in person.

One of Los Angeles' most notable landmarks is none other than the Hollywood Sign. Situated in Griffith Park, tourists can get an excellent view of the sign from the Observatory. However, another vantage point is the Ovation Hollywood Center, which is located on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and North Highland Avenue.

Visitors can also get a better view of the Hollywood Sign along several of Griffith Park's hiking trails , such as Brush Canyon Trail and Mt. Hollywood Trail.

See The Stars On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

What's a trip to Los Angeles without a visit to the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame? Long Beach eeks: Get tickets to the Queen Mary's fright fest

Dark harbor, the maze-filled spectacular, is back after a haunting hiatus., by alysia gray painter • published august 16, 2024 • updated on august 16, 2024 at 5:02 pm, what to know.

  • Dark Harbor at the Queen Mary in Long Beach

  • The spectacular, which features mazes, attractions, a dance party, and haunted delights, takes place next to the famous ocean-liner
  • The event presale is on now

Every successful haunted attraction, no matter how huge or humble, has a memorable backdrop, the sort of spooky setting that might involve mood lighting, fake spiderwebs, monster cut-outs, or foam tombstones.

But only one fall festival has the Queen Mary , the famous and famously phantom-laden ocean-liner, as its incredible backdrop. It's Dark Harbor , the said-to-be-haunted ship's annual autumn spectacular.

The longtime Halloween-inspired happening, which is returning after five frightful years away is back at the Long Beach landmark beginning Sept. 20, 2024.

A presale for the atmospheric event, which will be helmed by the fright-making group Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group, is happening now.

As with bygone Dark Harbors, monster-filled mazes and eye-popping attractions will dominate the fun in dastardly fashion.

Hewing to the Shipyard setting, and the Queen Mary's ocean-roaming past, is at the heart of the spooky storytelling: Vintage characters and fanciful figures weave through the terrifying tales told at the event, and encountering more than a few of these not-so-mortal stars is a distinct possibility.

The Ringmaster is a circus-inspired favorite, as are Scary Mary and Lady Mabel.

More throwback charms await, like pop-up speakeasies, the kind that rose to prominence back when the ship first sailed, as well as "The Maiden Voyage Launch Party," the chilling moment when the creepy characters "rise from their graves" each evening.

And "The Final Voyage" dance party, a sound-tastic send-off, will happen nightly an hour ahead of the eerie event's closing time.

"We've said from day one that we will honor the history, legacy, and stories of this legendary event," said Brett Bertolino, Director of Special Projects for Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group.

"But we're also committed to guiding the event's evolution by adding new and cutting-edge experiences."

Laguna Beach residents vs. beachgoers: Tensions are reaching a boiling point

Beachgoers enjoy Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, Aug. 15 . Here’s what you need to know to start your day.

  • Laguna Beach has been overrun by the four Ts: Traffic, trash, tempers and tourists.
  • Adam Schiff expands already sizable lead over Steve Garvey in California Senate race, poll says.
  • The Intuit Dome opens today, here’s what you need to know .
  • And here’s today’s e-newspaper

You're reading the Essential California newsletter

Our reporters guide you through our biggest news, features and recommendations every morning

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

Californians flock to the beach to escape the heat. Beach town residents don’t always like it.

California’s heat wave has continued into another week and there are few escapes from the oppressive temperatures. Beaches with their cool breezes and cooler water always beckon.

But here’s the problem with the beach: Most of us can’t afford to live there! In fact, there are 210 million-dollar cities in California (cities where the average home costs $1,000,000) and most of them are on the coast.

And so, conflict between those who call the beach home and those who travel to the beach is inevitable.

Especially in Laguna Beach. L.A. Times Reporter Hannah Fry went to Laguna to check in on its summer of discontent , as locals organize against the issues caused by an onslaught of tourists.

Here are four big things she learned.

Tourism to Laguna Beach has skyrocketed

A person in a black-and-white striped hat and orange top stands at a railing looking at people on the beach below

Laguna Beach has, of course, been popular for decades and tourism drives the local economy. But starting in summer 2020 the number of out-of-town beachgoers soared as people sought safe places to gather outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of tourists has barely fallen since then.

It’s not the only beach town in California seeing this wave of tourists, but locals say its unique geography (few roads in and out) makes it particularly difficult to manage.

Local opposition to tourism has become more organized

Officials in Laguna Beach formed a committee to address issues with visitors . The city also launched an ad campaign targeting misbehaving tourists that focuses on curtailing litter, cigarette smoke and loud vehicle exhaust.

Residents had been demanding the city take on overtourism for months, lining up at City Council meetings and begging staff to issue more tickets for illegal activity such as public drinking, littering and setting up beach tents that are too tall.

Tensions between visitors and residents reached a boiling point on TikTok

A homeowner was recorded in a July TikTok video screaming at a group of beachgoers (which included a child) as she used rope to cordon off a section of Victoria Beach. Her screams included an expletive.

The issue here : The 1976 California Coastal Act gives residents a right to the state’s beaches. But that right extends only to “the beach seaward of the mean high tide line.” That means the wet or damp sand area of a beach is open to the public.

It’s unclear whether the homeowner in the TikTok is on wet or dry sand.

Conflicts between tourists and residents aren’t unique to Laguna Beach, or even California

Let’s start close by: If you look hard enough, you can find a similarly themed video on TikTok from a Malibu beach. A tourist records a sign that reads, “This beach is on private lots. Trespassers will be prosecuted.”

The sign appears to be on wet sand, which is technically public.

Farther away, Venice, Italy, has started a program to charge day-trippers an entry fee for the city, hoping to discourage visits on peak days. And in Barcelona, protesters marched through the Spanish city spraying tourists with water pistols.

Pageant of the Masters was even weirder than I thought, and also insanely cool

A collage of two paintings of a 18th century party scene. In the center various women wearing elaborate gowns stand near men in tuxedos. At the far right of the painting is a piano scene with men and women standing around a person playing.

Is that a real person?

Pay up or bring your binoculars.

  • It's all magic

Until a few nights ago, the only thing I knew about Laguna Beach's Pageant of the Masters show was the hilarious spoof the cult sitcom Arrested Development had done that made the 91-year-old tradition look absolutely ridiculous.

Arrested Development is by far my favorite and, imo, most accurate picture of Orange County in popular media – so I went into attending my very first Pageant this week with a bit of a bias. But now that I've seen the real deal, I can say it is indeed one of the most bizarre, but also, most incredible and intricate spectacles I've ever witnessed.

I'm only half an hour away from Laguna Beach, but for the last eight years I've lived in O.C., I just couldn't get excited about the idea of watching volunteer actors hold their breath, and their pose, for more than a minute while trying to recreate old famous paintings. That was, I thought, the essence of the Pageant of the Masters.

But this year, the theme intrigued me: fashion trends through the ages. (A friend later pointed out that the show is kinda always about fashion. It's not like they're going to choose boring, ugly paintings to recreate.)

I recruited a few friends, found some cheap tickets, and pitched a story to my editors.

A woman in an 18th century pink dress on a swing with a man pushing her and another laying on the ground in front of her.

It took about two seconds after the show started for me to realize it's much more than a tableau vivant , or living picture where actors pose to recreate a static scene. Pageant of the Masters is a full-on multimedia extravaganza, with projections, skits, and a live orchestra.

There is narration throughout, which gives history and context to the scenes, along with occasional corny quips.

When life-sized portraits appeared onstage of long-dead British monarchs, I couldn't tell whether I was looking at actual people or not. But then, they must be real people, I thought, because that's the whole point of this thing!

I spent the next 15 minutes or so obsessed with trying to catch one of the actors blinking, or moving a muscle. I never did.

I started to realize I was missing the whole show when producers 'pulled back the curtain,' so to speak, to demonstrate what they do to make the paintings on stage look so real.

Actors walk up into a three-dimensional background, which is surrounded by a frame that makes it look like the picture is floating above the stage floor. Curtains allow the stagehands to adjust the size of the frame to fit whatever painting they're recreating. The backdrops are intricate replicas of the original works, with missing spaces where real people and props stand in.

A woman painted in all gold is seemingly suspended in the air with elaborate butterfly wings attached to her back.

And the actors — nearly 500 volunteers help put on the show — were amazingly still, even in the most uncomfortable looking positions. I later read in the program that they have props that help them hold a pose, like a seat belt for the pink-gowned woman soaring through the air in the recreation of Jean-Honoré Fragonard's The Swing. The humans posing as famous statues were similarly impeccable — if I didn't know, I would've thought they were just well-painted paper mache replicas, positioned there to enhance the overall theme of the show.

It's possible those sitting closer to the stage can spot the difference between actor and prop or painted backdrop. I was in the cheap seats. And when I realized people around me had binoculars, I felt like a total noob.

So at intermission, I rented some. But honestly, I still couldn't identify the living, breathing humans on stage! After the show, I mused with a couple of women sitting near me that maybe you need to see the Pageant several times for your eyes to adjust to the surrealness of it all.

A young woman is getting makeup applied to her face and lips. Her forehead and neck are blue and white, her lips are deep red.

After looking at photos of the backstage prep and rehearsals, I realized that a major trick is in the makeup. The soft lines, unnatural colors and painted-on shadows turn the actors into doppelgängers of their brush-stroked models.

The weird fake hair — which, in closeups, looks like plastic Lego hair — is also key for certain recreations.

A line of women and men stand in front of a backdrop wearing medieval clothing and pointy black shoes.

It's all magic

I started to really enjoy the show, rather than just gawk, when I gave up on scrutinizing the details and declared the whole thing magic.

The show’s tribute to Edith Head , the eight-time Academy Award-winning costume designer, confirmed my conclusion. As we watched life-sized replicas of Alfred Hitchcock movie posters, and actors recreating a scene from The Birds, the narrator invoked this quote from Head:

(inline quote) "What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not."

If for nothing else, I'd go see the Pageant again because of the gorgeous setting. The amphitheater where it takes place, on the grounds of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts, is like a smaller, more intimate Hollywood Bowl — without the light pollution.

When my eyes needed a break from staring at a scene, I looked up at the stars. Later, the waning moon peaked up above Laguna Canyon, just late enough not to upstage the show.

Tips for making the most of it … on the cheap

  • You can get up to half off on tickets by scrolling down to the 25% off link and " Last Chance 50% Off! " link on the Pageant website.
  • If you get seats toward the back (aka, the cheap ones), you'll probably want binoculars. You can rent them for $10 but they're not great quality, so if you have your own, bring them.
  • You can bring in your own food and drink as long as it fits in a small bag or cooler (14” by 14” by 14”). No glass bottles, though.
  • It's an outdoor amphitheater in a canyon so it gets chilly when the sun goes down. Bring warm clothes to avoid having to buy a $15 blanket at intermission.
  • There's a good amount of parking nearby along Laguna Canyon Rd., with several lots, and meters along the main road (metered parking is free after 9 p.m.).
  • You can also park for free at a lot near the I-405/SR-133 interchange (16355 Laguna Canyon Rd., Irvine) and take a free shuttle to the venue.

Rather than taking a road trip from Los Angeles, how about hopping on a boat? Catalina Island , located a little more than 20 miles from the Southern California shoreline, is accessible from the San Pedro neighborhood of LA or from Long Beach via a Catalina Express ferry. The island is full of adventure, romance, relaxation and sightseeing both on land and in the ocean. Once you arrive in Avalon, the main city, you can take a walking tour at the historic Catalina Casino, rent a golf cart to cruise around, explore historic El Rancho Escondido or enjoy the thrill of an ecotour by zip line. Vacationers may also enjoy hitting the beach at Descanso Beach Club

Enjoy fresh lobster at The Lobster Trap, grab a beer at Flx Biergarten, the island's only beer garden, or dine with harbor views at Avalon Grille, in the recently renovated Hotel Atwater.

For an unforgettable weekend stay, book a room at the sophisticated Mt Ada. This romantic bed-and-breakfast features a wraparound deck with expansive ocean views. Guests have access to their own golf cart, as well as complimentary breakfast, lunch and snacks. Just outside of Avalon, Hamilton Cove has private villas perched on a hillside overlooking the Catalina coastline – or, if you want to rough it in the outdoors, campsites are also available at the island's campgrounds.

Aerial of homes along the coastal cliffs of Laguna Beach, California.

About 50 miles south of Los Angeles you'll find picturesque Laguna Beach , also known as the California Riviera. This chic coastal town in Orange County comes complete with high-end boutiques, five-star accommodations, gourmet restaurants and art galleries galore. If you plan your weekend trip for the summer, you may be able to catch one of the world-famous art festivals hosted by Laguna Beach, such as the Sawdust Art Festival. Art lovers can also take a Laguna Beach Walks self-guided walking tour that showcases the city's public art, at any time of year. The newly revamped Rivian Theater – built in the 1930s – features art and nature-inspired documentary films and community events. Palm trees against a vibrant sunset in Santa Barbara, California.

For serene coastal vibes and seaside views about 95 miles west of LA, Santa Barbara is a great escape in Southern California – especially for pet owners, since it's one of the top dog-friendly beach destinations in the U.S. With its balmy Mediterranean climate, cultural offerings, star-studded beaches and flourishing culinary scene, it's no wonder Santa Barbara draws millions of vacationers each year. Oenophiles will have the opportunity to explore more than 20 local wineries along the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail – some, like Pali Wine Company, allow dogs.

For a focus on wellness, you can do a sound bath in a salt cave or on a sailboat, take a sunset stroll along the beach , head out on the water on a kayak or wander through the lush gardens at Lotusland in nearby Montecito.

Accommodations range from luxury resorts to laid-back boutique hotels. Santa Barbara has a compelling culinary scene overall, with plenty of farm-to-table options that focus on locally sourced ingredients. Swing by the Santa Barbara Public Market for a variety of vendors serving everything from hardy sandwiches at Wexler's Deli to Mexican street food at Corazon Cocina. For a fun girls lunch, head to El Encanto or San Ysidro Ranch for afternoon tea.

Colorful sunset over Big Bear Lake in California.

A cold-weather getaway to Big Bear Lake is about 120 miles east of LA and is a prime winter destination for skiers and snowboards. In the warmer seasons, Big Bear Lake becomes a hub for boating, hiking and biking, so this small city in the San Bernardino National Forest makes an ideal trip year-round. Get out on the lake in a rented pontoon boat, paddleboard, kayak and more – or, for an off-road adventure, the Big Bear Jeep Experience is a popular activity, as is the Mineshaft Coaster. Fuel up with a juicy burger at 572 Social Kitchen & Lounge, dine on delicious Italian cuisine at the Sweet Basil Bistro or sip a craft brew at Big Bear Lake Brewing Company.

Although plenty of visitors opt for a daytrip to Big Bear, consider extending your getaway with a stay at the new kitschy Noble + Proper, where every two-story cabin is themed after a specific character, so it's as if you're staying in their home. Another newcomer is Sessions Retreat Hotel which encourages social interaction with community games and a fire pit.

One buzz-worthy new attraction in this resort city is the Palm Springs Surf Club, which features a state-of-the-art wave pool.

With Palm Springs sitting a little more than 100 miles east of Los Angeles, A-listers flock to this desert destination for much-needed wellness and relaxation. Soak in the hot mineral springs at The Spa at SĂŠc-he, detox at We Care Spa, meet with a mindset practitioner at Sensei Porcupine Creek or partake in a sonic healing at Integration.

For unique accommodations, stay in a modernized Airstream at the new Acres Landing, enjoy a minimalist retreat at Drift Palm Springs, embrace midcentury modern design at Mahala or find serenity at the adults-only Azure Sky Hotel.

Cholla Cactus Garden in Joshua Tree National Park at sunset.

Experience the Zen of the desert and the majestic natural wonders that await in Joshua Tree National Park , about 130 miles east of Los Angeles (and not too far from Palm Springs). Explore the 800,000 acres of desert wilderness through hiking, biking, rock climbing , horseback riding, backpacking and photography.

Before you head out, stop by the Joshua Tree Visitor & Cultural Center in Twentynine Palms, California, to see rotating exhibits celebrating Indigenous culture, along with maps, park information and safety tips. As you traverse Joshua Tree, be sure to take in sights such as Skull Rock , Black Rock Canyon, Cottonwood Spring and Covington Flats.

With more than 500 campsites in the park – most of which are available by reservation – camping is one of the most accessible ways to experience an overnight stay. Or, upgrade to AutoCamp Joshua Tree, where guests sleep in stylish and modern Airstream trailers, for a glamping experience . Outdoor enthusiasts may want to consider a stay at Field Station Joshua Tree, with a gear shop, pool and bocce ball. If budget is not an issue, you may choose to rent one of the most exclusive homes in the world: the Kellogg Doolittle House.

Sunset view of valley with a large extinct volcanic mountain in the background in San Luis Obispo, California.

With around 287 days of sunshine, San Luis Obispo (nicknamed SLO) is the perfect year-round weekend destination – and one of the best places to visit in California – with picturesque beaches, a burgeoning farm-to-table culinary scene, rolling vineyards and plenty of small-town charm. Kick off a long weekend with a stop at a pedestrian-friendly farmers market held on Thursday evenings along Higuera Street downtown. Other SLO activity options include shopping for one-of-a-kind items at the JunkGirls shop, taking a surfing lesson or catching a movie at the nostalgic Sunset Drive-In. There are plenty of galleries to sate art lovers, but a more unconventional tourist attraction invites visitors to help make graffiti out of chewed gum in Bubblegum Alley. For a bit of California history, wander through the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.

One thing you won't want to miss is the wine. Head to Chamisal Vineyards in nearby Edna Valley to sip chardonnay and pinot noir with views of the vineyards or do a "Zip 'n Sip" experience where you zip line over vineyards and do a wine tasting with Margarita Adventures.

For a one-of-a-kind overnight stay, the Madonna Inn has more than 100 guest rooms, each with a different theme, such as the Caveman, Love Nest, Pioneer America and Golfer's Room.

A naturally formed heart-shaped grove of oak trees, known locally as "Heart Hill" or "Valentine Hill," surrounded by grapevines in Paso Robles, California.

Head to central California's wine country for a visit to charming Paso Robles, a city about 230 miles northwest of LA that's located along coastal U.S. Route 101. Paso Robles is a community of cowboys, surfers and innovators; travelers can enjoy world-class food and wine as well as inspiring art and whole-body wellness here. You'll find more than 200 wineries in the region, complemented by a variety of craft breweries, cideries and distilleries in Paso Robles. A can't-miss nighttime activity is a self-guided stroll through the recently updated immersive Sensorio lights display.

Thanks to the world-class wines and family farms, Paso Robles is a mecca for delicious dining – including The Restaurant, which recently received a Michelin Green Star, at JUSTIN Winery and Vineyards; the Michelin-starred Six Test Kitchen, located inside the Tin City makers market; and Paso Market Walk, a reinvented farmers market. From rustic hideaways to glamping sites, Paso Robles also has lodging options to fit any taste and budget. For luxury accommodations, consider the boutique equine-themed Hotel Cheval, just off Paso Robles' historic town square, or their sister property, the Western chic Stables Inn. For something different, spend a night sleeping in a revamped shipping container at Geneseo Inn, the newly renovated and nostalgic Farm House motel, or the new River Lodge is a top spot for midcentury modern enthusiasts.

If you don't mind a bit longer drive, or you have some flexibility on your timing, these destinations offer a scenic drive and plenty to do when you arrive.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Aerial of the Las Vegas strip as seen at night.

If an adults-only weekend trip is what you have in mind, head out to Las Vegas , a vivacious and walkable city that is constantly evolving. Sitting about 270 miles north of Los Angeles, Las Vegas checks all the boxes for a memorable vacation. You can hit the slots at resorts like Wynn and Encore, catch in-residency concerts from big names such as Garth Brooks/Plus One or the Eagles at the new high-tech Sphere, or watch one of the best Las Vegas shows like the spectacular Awakening at Wynn or one of the many Cirque Du Soleil performances.

Make time for wellness and recovery with a treatment at a world-class spa like the Awana Spa at Resorts World with a crystal laconium room and rain walk or the Lapis Spa at the new Fontainebleau Las Vegas that features a snow shower and stargazing lounge.

Las Vegas is a top destination for foodies with a dining scene that boasts a variety of culinary choices. Enjoy a meal crafted by a celebrity chef at places like the new The Bedford by Martha Stewart or Orla by Michael Mina. Sip craft cocktails with a story at LPM Restaurant & Bar in The Cosmopolitan, order a tower of cocktails at Bellagio's newly renovated COMO Poolside Cafe or, at the new Vanderpump Ă  Paris, try an impressive drink like the Louvre at First Sight.

Live it up like a high roller with a Fleur de Lis suite at the newest resort on the Strip, Fontainebleau. The suites include a private elevator, fresh flowers, butler service and VIP lounge. The luxury resort also features a poolside cinema (during spring and summer months), gaming lounge and day club; along with a variety of live entertainment and signature restaurants including upscale Chinese cuisine at Chyna Club.

Aerial of mudstone badlands at Zabriskie Point at sunrise in Death Valley National Park, California.

From Los Angeles, the closest paved entrance to Death Valley National Park is on California state Route 190; whichever route you take to get there, you'll likely want to budget around five hours for the drive, which is about 290 miles. Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48 states. Its 3.4 million acres include some of the most unique landscapes and sites you'll find anywhere – such as the Badwater Basin salt flats, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Rainbow Canyon and Artists Palette's colorful hills. Download the free National Park Service app to take a driving tour of "Star Wars" filming locations in the park. Death Valley also boasts some of the best stargazing opportunities in the U.S., as an International Dark Sky Park considered "Gold Tier," meaning there is minimal interference from light pollution.

The Oasis at Death Valley – part of the Xanterra Travel Collection – encompasses the romantic Inn at Death Valley and the family-friendly Ranch at Death Valley, which features a revitalized town square and new shops, including an ice cream parlor with an old-school soda fountain. There are also seasonal campgrounds and other inns and motels in the park.

Lake in foreground with mountain in background under blue skies in Mammoth Lakes, California.

If the mountains are calling you, head to the Sierra Nevada for a weekend in the resort town of Mammoth Lakes. During the warmer months, visitors can take a scenic gondola ride, hike on the mountain or near the lakes, explore the mountain bike park, ride the mountain coaster, try the Via Ferrata or experience the new summer tubing.

For dog-friendly accommodation, check out the Outbound Mammoth resort with a pool, fire pits, steam room and video arcade, or the elegant Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth , located in The Village, with gondola access to the slopes, an upscale restaurant, fitness center and pool. Alternatively, stay lakeside at Tamarack Lodge & Resort with access to fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, boating or cross-country skiing.

Dining options in the area include wine and charcuterie boards at The Shed, burgers, fondue and craft beer at Mammoth Tavern, and the new upscale Vulcania restaurant by celebrity chefs, the Voltaggio brothers.

White sand beach under a vibrant sunset sky in Carmel, California.

The 1-square-mile, European-style village of Carmel seamlessly blends history, arts and culture, and stunning ocean views for a relaxing and unique travel experience. Just off of state Route 1 near Monterey , this charming seaside destination about 320 miles northwest of LA is ideal for dreamy weekend getaways any time of year – especially if you have a canine companion in tow. Carmel boasts world-class art galleries, whimsical architecture, nearly 20 wine tasting rooms, the dog-friendly Carmel Beach, a few dozen secret passageways and more restaurants per capita than any other small U.S. city. Enjoy Mediterranean, Italian or French cuisine at quaint local eateries like La Balena, Dametra Cafe, Yafa, La Bicyclette and many more.

Book a stay in one of the historic inns, such as the "Grande Dame of Carmel": La Playa Carmel , a historic hotel with a prime view of Carmel Beach, perfect for evenings spent gazing out at the sunset or taking a moonlit walk in the sand. If you bring your fur baby with you on your weekend jaunt, Cypress Inn provides dog-friendly accommodations and is a short walk to Carmel Beach, where dogs can run off leash.

Sunset view over Our Lady of Guadalupe cathedral with the ocean in the background in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

If you're willing to take to the skies, you can leave California – and the U.S. – altogether for a quick weekend trip to Mexico. Grab your besties or your significant other for a flight to Puerto Vallarta, a resort town on Mexico's Pacific coast, and after about three hours on a plane, you can sip margaritas with your toes in the sand. There's plenty to do in Puerto Vallarta: Sail to the Marieta Islands to discover a hidden beach, take a whale watching tour or stroll along the iconic El Malecón boardwalk for souvenirs, ocean views and street performances. Beyond the shoreline, travelers can visit the nearby village of Sayulita for artwork by Huichol Indigenous people or dance the night away in lively nightclubs.

For an all-inclusive stay, Casa Velas is a boutique, adults-only resort that offers laid-back luxury in an intimate setting. If you're traveling with your family, consider Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit , which features entertainment, dining and activities like kids and teens clubs. Try the Hydrotherapy Circuit at the five-star spa or feast on innovative global cuisine at the property's many restaurants. Look for the "insta spot" signs for tips on where to snap the best selfies.

Gondola connecting Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.

About 17 miles to the east of Whistler, is the Whistler Olympic Park with biathlon, tobogganing, snowshoeing and more. For a less active visit, take the Peak to Peak scenic gondola, enjoy a summer concert, helicopter tour or a day of relaxing in a thermal bath at Scandinave Spa.

In Whistler Village, you'll find hotels, restaurants, shops, entertainment and art and culture venues such as the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre, Whistler Museum and Audain Art Museum. For an immersive nighttime experience in an enchanted forest, make the 6-mile drive to Vallea Lumina.
