Before you go, it is in your interest to fully research the accommodations, transport arrangements, local foods, and attractions to ensure you get the most out of your visit. This guide is designed to help you on your way.

Airports & Entry

Most visitors to Maui arrive on an airplane or a cruise liner. Using either method, you’ll most likely arrive in Kahului.

Kahului is the main settlement on Maui, hosting its commercial shopping centers, light industrial areas, a deep-draft harbor for cruise liners, and Kahului Airport.

Although Maui only boasts a population of 155 thousand, over 5 million passengers pass through Kahului Airport every year. Many flights from the mainland involve a layover in Honolulu, but there are direct flights.

When booking, try to get a direct flight to save time. There is only one terminal building at Kahului, but you can find all the usual amenities on the second floor.

The Visitor Information Office in the central building is open from 7:45am to 9:45pm, and there are information desks throughout the airport.

ATMs and internet stations are found throughout the second floor. The airport shops—a DFS, gift store, jewelers, and newsstand—open at times varying from 6am for the newsstand to 8:45am.

All the shops close around 9pm. While the earliest of the 9 food outlets—Starbucks—opens at 5:30am, they are all closed by 10:30pm.

There are 8 car rental companies operating from the airport, but it’s a good idea to book in advance to save time at the airport and ensure that there’s a vehicle available.

A convenient and affordable shuttle service connects the airport to the main tourist accommodation locations on the island, including Wailea, Napili, Makena, Lahaina, Kihei, Kahana, Ka’anapali, Honokawai, and, of course, Kahului’s commercial center.

The Maui Airport Shuttle Service desk can be found in the Baggage Claim area, and no reservations are required. The desk opens at 5:30am and closes after the last flight arrival of the day.

If you are traveling light, the local public transportation system is an affordable option. Cash fares on the Maui Bus service are $2 per person for a single ride or $4 for a day pass.

Route 35 (Haiku) and Route 40 (Upcountry) operate every 90 minutes from 5:30am and 6:00am to 9:40pm and 10:11pm respectively.

However, the public bus has a strict luggage policy, so only one suitcase or carry-on bag is allowed and must fit on the passenger’s lap or under their seat. So, Maui Bus is only an option if you are a “hand luggage only” kind of flyer.

Taxis pick up from the front of the baggage claim area, but they are expensive. The metered rate is $3:00 per mile. That means it would cost you approximately $65 to Makena, $78 to Lahaina, and $105 to Kapalua.

Cruise ships moor at Pier 1 in Kahului Deep Draft Harbor. Maui Bus operates a service that stops at the harbor, and taxis are an option.

It is a 25-minute walk from Pier 1 to the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, Kahului’s main commercial center and transport hub.

Tip #1: If you want to see whales, go in winter

During the summer, humpback whales feed and congregate around Alaska. In winter, they migrate south to mate and calve. From mid-December to mid-April, there are an abundance of whale sightings in Maui.

Between 10 and 12 thousand whales congregate in these tropical waters. Whales are often visible at a distance from the beaches and will circle any small boats that approach their pods. Winter is the best time to whale watch in Maui.

Tip #2: Take your time to appreciate all that Maui has to offer

Perhaps you only want to see the whales or surf in the sunshine, but there’s a lot more to see and do in Maui.

Tip #3: Book Maui tours in advance, especially during winter

Tip #4: Take summer clothes and raincoats

Because Maui is tropical, you need to pack summer clothes. However, don’t forget it also rains a lot on the island.

This store is a member owned and operated cooperative where you will find the actual artists inside the store eager to speak to you about their arts and crafts.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Maui not only has a unique ecosystem with plants not found in the other 49 States, but it also boasts an uninterrupted cultural history.

That means during your stay you have the unique opportunity to taste genuine Polynesian food untainted by European colonial influences.

Because Maui is an island surrounded by abundant marine life, it’s no surprise many restaurants feature seafood on their menus. A popular dish is Opakapaka, which is crimson snapper either steamed, baked or grilled.

Monchong is a deep-water fish marinaded and grilled. Raw tuna is a favorite with the locals and is found in traditional foods like Poke.

Poke is like Japanese Sashimi but with the raw fish served in hearty chunks rather than thin slices.

Something unique to the Hawaiian Islands is luau food cooked in an earth oven called an imu. A tasty example of luau food is Laulau, made with pork, chicken, or fish.

The selected meat is wrapped in taro leaves and then cooked inside the imu for hours until it grows soft with a smoky taste. Delicious!

While many North Americans might consider either bread or potato to be their staple food during meals, on Maui taro is the staple root crop.

Despite Maui’s small size, you will find a good selection of venues to let your hair down. The island offers something for everybody’s taste, from a plush Martini lounge to a rowdy beach watering hole where locals play pool and watch the big game live. But something truly special only experienced in the Hawaiian Islands is a luau.

If you want to dress up and drink in style, you could head to the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua and visit the Alaloa Lounge. They offer outdoor or indoor seating and live entertainment Thursday through Monday. The Kapalua Martini is a local specialty you should try.

At the other end of the scale is Life’s A Beach in Kihei, a beach lounge frequented by locals. As well as the football and pool tables you’d expect from a popular watering hole, they also have regular evening entertainment. They offer everything from open mic nights to live reggae bands.

But for a fun-packed evening of traditional songs, stories, food, and drink, you won’t do better than an organized traditional luau.

For around $130, you can experience Lei Greetings, observe the Imu Ceremony (cooking a pig in an earth oven), Hula Dance, and play Hawaiian games. The highlight is a performance by locals telling the story of how their ancestors first discovered and populated Maui, aided by the gods.

Getting Around

If you want to explore the Hāna Highway with the flexibility to stop wherever and whenever you choose, your best option is to rent a car.

However, if you don’t want to do this, you can get around by public transportation, shuttle bus, on a tour, or by taxi. Maui Bus, the public bus service, is an extremely efficient and cheap way of getting around the island.

But Maui Bus’ focus is on getting the locals where they need to go, which might not be what you want to see. A tour bus will take you exactly where you need to go, but on their schedule, not yours.

Taxis are an option for nearby attractions, but at $3 per mile, they are expensive for long journeys.

Accommodations

Most visitors to Maui stay near one of the larger settlements along the coast, but not Kahului, which is relatively industrial and less touristy than other towns.

Popular locations include Kā’anapali, Kapalua, Kihei, Lahaina, Mākena, and Kapalua. There are also hotels and resorts in the Up Country area around Kula.

When deciding where you want to stay, think about what you most want to see and do while you’re on the island.

Bear in mind that towns like Kā’anapali, Kapalua, and Lahaina on the leeward, west coast will be a lot drier and a little warmer than towns like Hāna on the windward, east coast.

Also remember that although the island is small and settlements close to one another, the roads meander, and there are mountains in the way. If you decide to stay in Hāna but intend to visit Lahaina, allow 3 hours each way for the drive.

When you’ve chosen your target location, you will find lots of resorts, hotels, hostels, and B&Bs to choose from. Tourism is big business in Maui, so there are rooms available to suit any budget.

Although Maui is a small island, you will experience several distinctly different climates while traveling around. This is a product of the island’s unique geography.

There are two important variables: elevation above sea level and position in relation to the two mountainous regions.

If you are on one of the whale tours in Maui, your boat will be at an elevation of 0 feet, but if you are admiring the view from atop Haleakalā, your elevation is 10,000 feet.

The higher you climb, the cooler the air temperature will be. As a rough guide, every 1,000 feet you rise above sea level, the temperature will drop 3.2 0 F.

This means that when the beach is 70 0 F, the summit is 38 0 F! Although Maui’s climate is tropical, snow sometimes appears at the summit.

If you decide to climb Haleakalā, make sure you take warm clothing in your backpack. You may begin your ascent in the tropics, but you’ll arrive to weather more like the Arctic.

Up Country Maui is wetter and cooler than neighboring South Maui because it sits at a higher elevation.

The low-lying central valley, where the airport is situated along with Kahului and Maalaea, is windy but dry and usually sunnier than other areas. The trade winds hit the windward, eastern shores of the island, bringing moist air.

As that air climbs the mountains, it releases the moisture as rain. This leads to a lot of rain on the east side of the island, hence the rainforests.

The leeward, western shores, because they are sheltered from the wind by the mountains, only get a remnant of the rain. This makes the western shores relatively dry, especially where sheltered by Haleakalā.

The average temperatures on Maui don’t change too much from the winter to the summer. Because the island is in the tropics, it’s almost always warm. In the coolest winter months, the average high is 80 0 F and the low 65 0 F, but around 1 0 F cooler along the Hāna Highway.

If you want to snorkel, the ocean temperature is a pleasant 75 0 F. Winter is the season that sees the most rainfall. In the warmest summer months, the average high is 84 0 F and the low 70 0 F but 83 0 F-69 0 F around Hāna. The ocean temperature rises to around 80 0 F in summer.

Attractions

Maui is an island steeped in natural beauty and cultural history. There are many interesting places to visit and activities to enjoy.

You can hike through the rainforest, snorkel in the crystal-clear water offshore, watch whales in the Pacific, or attend an authentic luau.

Maui is volcanic in origin, created by lava flows from two volcanoes. Haleakalā is the larger of the two volcanoes, responsible for over 75% of Maui’s landmass. You can find Haleakalā at the heart of Haleakalā National Park, which is a popular destination for tourists.

If you enjoy photography, you’ll love the sunset over the Pacific Ocean viewed from the summit of Haleakalā. And once the sun has gone down, Haleakalā is also a fantastic place to stargaze, when it is not cloudy.

At 10,000 feet elevation and with no light pollution, you get an uninterrupted view of the cosmos. The main feature of the park is the volcano’s crater.

It is 7 miles long, 2 wide, and approximately 2,600 feet deep. Another popular attraction inside the park is Hosmer’s Grove.

This is an unusual collection of invasive trees from all around the world, including eucalyptus from Australia and pine from North America.

Visitors love to explore the Hāna Highway—Hawaii Routes 36 and 360. The highway winds along the North Shore between Kahului in Central Maui and Hāna in East Maui.

With 59 narrow one-lane bridges and 620 curves, some of them hair-pin turns, this adventure is not for the faint of heart. But if you're like me and seek new adventures while on vacation, it is definitely a trip worth making. Start early though, and keep track of time because no one should be on this road after dark. You will be rewarded with some of most beautiful waterfalls and scenery on the island of Maui. It is a dangerous and unpredictable road. On our first try, we had to turn around and go back because a giant bolder fell and the road was blocked. So this might not be the adventure you want to save for the last day. We found the guided tours to be a little too pricey, but we did buy the Shaka Guide app and downloaded the Road to Hana tour. It was the best decision of the entire vacation. The app is great and does not lose connectivity like Google Maps would. It also does a great job of telling you where to stop and what you will find when you stop, and then picking right back up when you start going again. There is a reason for those "I Survived the Road to Hana" t-shirts, though, so this is not the adventure for everyone!!

Embarking on the famed "Road to Hana" was like stepping into a time machine that whisked me through memories of winding roads in far-flung corners of the world. From the rugged terrains of Baja California to the scenic routes of Portugal, Taiwan, and Colorado, each twist and turn evoked a sense of nostalgia, as if I were journeying through a prehistoric land straight out of Jurassic Park. Half expecting a dinosaur to peek out from the lush foliage, I marveled at the primal beauty surrounding me. Yet, amidst the awe-inspiring landscapes, I couldn't help but notice the lack of mirrors along the treacherous road, leaving drivers at the mercy of blind corners and unexpected encounters. It was both thrilling and nerve-wracking to navigate past fellow adventurers who seemed to throw caution to the wind, disregarding the "yield" signs and finding themselves in sticky situations--often, it seemed, the "Holie" Men were the most adventurous (or perhaps, foolhardy) of the lot. One unfortunate soul, driven by sheer determination (or sheer folly), pushed his luck a tad too far and ended up with a dented car and a bruised ego. A cautionary tale, to be sure, but a reminder that sometimes, the road less traveled can lead to unexpected detours. As I descended from the heights of this enchanting journey, I encountered another obstacle in the form of rocks tumbling onto the road--a timely reminder of Mother Nature's untamed power. Grateful for my early departure, I couldn't help but chuckle at the series of misadventures that befell some along the way. In the end, the "Road to Hana" proved to be a thrilling escapade for any nature enthusiast, weaving together elements of danger, beauty, and the unexpected--a road trip like no other, where the journey itself was as wild and unpredictable as the destination.

I would highly not recommend this drive if you're not a fan of windy roads or cliffsides. It is definitely a long tiring drive. This trip can take anywhere from 5 hours to 12 hours depending on how much you stop. I would say the drive is very worth it for the views and the destination. There is tons of beautiful stops along the way and countless beautiful views just from the car windows. Be ready to encounter endless turns and winding roads. Also expect tons of horrible drivers all along the way. We ended up going immediately to twin falls which is one of the first stops along the way. Wear water shoes!!! It's a beautiful 30 minute hike with some amazing features. After that it started raining a bit which cut some of our stops out but it was still very drivable. Our next stop was the peninsula which we only pulled over to view from the overlook. That was a nice little pit stop with some amazing views. From here we just ended up going straight to Hana. Once we got to Hana we went to the red sand beach which I highly recommend and would say is the highlight of the whole drive. After red sand beach we ate at a little Thai place nearby which was amazing as well. The ride back went fairly quickly around 2.5hrs. All in all the trip took us 7.5 hours from hotel Wailea and back. The views were absolutely stunning and something you have to do while here. I highly recommend the Shaka Maui app which is a guided tour along the way. Really made the experience informative.

Words to describe the drive along this exotic mountain road: lush nature history views waterfalls hiking loose dogs stopping traffic! wild mongoose! fresh hot banana bread Don't go here if you can't handle not having cell phone service or long drives with over 600 turns, including many hairpin turns. Highly recommend downloading one of the apps guiding you along the road to Hana, as you may need it when cell phone service becomes spotty. This is an all day excursion, I loved every bit of it. Bring snacks, drinks, (most importantly) don't forget to bring: bug spray, layer your clothing, take your trash with you! Respect the journey, the land, the history, and the people of this beautifully preserved part of old Hawaii.

We left Paia at 8am so we beat the rush of the tour buses and late crowd. We ordered the Shaka Guide to Hana Audit tour and it was so pleasant listening to music as well as historical facts while on this tour. So many twists and turns, lots of the turnouts do not allow parking but the ones that do are breathtaking and worth the stop for a quick dip or swim. Don't forget to pick up a smoothie at Halfway to Hana or the amazing coconut ice cream at Coconut Glen's. Keep the windows down if you have someone sensitive to motion sickness. We stayed the night in Hana, enjoyed the black sand beaches and then proceeded to hike to the 400 feet Waimoku Falls. Don't forgot the (free) roadside lava tubes. Sit back, get the audio tour and enjoy the ride!

"Boring!" "Underwhelming!" A derp. Ever notice people that leave negative reviews always say the same thing? They don't really give legit reasons either. There wasn't just a little waterfall on this road either, I saw many waterfalls. You can even park on the side of the road (you'll see other cars do it so park behind them) and you can swim in there. One of the pictures I uploaded was when I took it in the water. You just have to use common sense. We split the road to Hana in two days so that we can take our time exploring. We filled up with gas prior to starting it. It's mostly a one way road and you should exit the area before it gets dark. With the one way's and the turns, it can be difficult to see at night. Also download the self guided map app because your gps won't help much. I recommend stopping at these points: -Twin Falls -Garden of Eden -Halfway to Hana - really good banana bread -Hanawi Falls -Nahiku Marketplace -Hana Lava Tube -Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach) -Wailua Falls Pipiwai Trail Bonus: if you're brave you can make a stop at the red sand beach. I posted a review on there but please be careful of the ledge. It's easy to fall and get severely injured if you're not paying attention.

Windy road, looking at a bunch of trees and vegetation. There are a couple of pull offs to look at a few waterfalls and get a smoothie. Don't waste your whole day driving. You can get banana bread, smoothies, lunch and see the ocean from your resort. Don't waste a day in Maui driving in your car.........

The Road to Hana is probably the drive of a lifetime. It runs 64+ miles & has 617 hairpin turns. Keep in mind that once you get to Hana, you have to drive the same road back to where you started !! If you are subject to motion sickness, mark this OFF your things to do on Maui.

I didn't find this drive to be as difficult as others mentioned, I was worried going into it but it's not bad at all just windy and you have to go slow behind people. It's really not as bad at all from what people described here lol idk why I got so freaked out going into this. If you've driven up and down the PCH or literally any coastal line , this is just a more intense version of that. But if you're that worried then just book a tour and it'll be handled for you. Budget in enough time for driving at night when there's less visibility and if this isn't clear if you're new when the road merges to a one way - simply honk around the curve. When in doubt literally just honk it out to let cars behind the curve know you're there. If locals are driving fast behind you put your emergency lights on and let them pass - don't get freaked out. For roads like this the worse thing to do is panic and stop incessantly if you're not used to it. Make sure you do your research and plan ahead for the stops on the way because many sights will require reservations. As of July 2023 there was a landslide so you have to drive up and all the way back the same way. Recs - hamoa beach, garden of Eden ( $20 entry fee per person), twin falls, banana bread from anywhere the famous one closes at 2:30 but I doubt it's anything different than other spots, and stock up on snacks or food in paia before you begin bc the food is kinda lackluster on the route ( hot dogs and chips etc)

2 days of Hana and it was just bliss. I love it so much. 50+ miles and over 30 one car bridges to pass. Get up early to beat the crowd. I was already on the road by 7 and I didn't see cars until closer to 9:30/10am. It was great. Go slow and hug the sides. Be respectful and let the locals pass you. We're the ones on vacation and have more time throughout our day. Everything about Hana is amazing. The road, the views, oh the waterfalls, the beaches, local food and best yet, the people. So many stop along the road. So many stops like twin falls, Auntie Sandy's banana bread, Keanae lookout, Waikani falls, black sand beach at Waianapanaoa state park, hamoa beach, koki beach, Huli huli chicken, Wailua falls and of course Haleakala to see Oheo ghulch and Waimoku falls. Take your time, support the local stalls and enjoy. Be mindful that many things do close by 4pm in Hana.

The  Hana Highway , or The Road to Hana as it’s more well known, is a 64.4-mile-long portion of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360. The highway connects tourists and locals alike from the town of Kahului in Central Maui to the town of Hana in East Maui . The “road” has been around since the 16th century. Then known as The Kings Trail, it was ordered by Chief Piilani who wanted to be able to travel from village to village by foot rather than by canoe on the ocean.

Modern (wider dirt and rock) roads were built in the late 1800s to facilitate the movement of people and products to and from the plantations in Hana. Sugar cane mills along with rubber and pineapple plantations thrived in Hana at that time, making the construction of better roadways to and from Kahului and Paia a must. The highway wasn’t paved until 1962 and even then there were still unpaved stretches. Surprisingly, the highway was not fully paved until the 1980s.

The famous “Road to Hana” (or Hana Highway) winds along the undeveloped eastern coast of Maui with cliffs above the Pacific Ocean on one side and lush rainforest full of majestic waterfalls on the other. See the highlights with a full day tour which allows you to efficiently fit in much more than one could do on one’s own, and to learn about the sights, history, and Hawaiian culture from a knowledgeable and fun local guide. By doing a tour, you can also relax while taking in the scenery rather than driving yourself many hours on the long narrow windy and sometimes bumpy road.

You will be picked up from your lodging and safely transported to many stops while receiving personalized attention with only a maximum of 8 people on the tour in a roomy modern air-conditioned van designed for 14 (note: larger / private groups also possible). Highlights include waterfalls, beaches (including black and red sand beaches), lava tubes, remote towns, swimming off beaches (optional), Charles Lindbergh’s grave, and of course many lookouts and ocean views along the way. This is a "full circle" tour, so you will not be turning around in Hana but instead return via the southern loop with very different terrain and unique views of the backside of the volcano.*

Note: when booking within a week of the tour date when spots can be limited and availability can change quickly, sometimes there are issues confirming your selected date. You would either get a confirmation email or be contacted asap if there is an issue.

* Loop Status - September Update Due to ongoing road maintenance past Hana due to storm erosion, the tour cannot guarantee the loop at this time, although some of the tour vans are getting through. Temporary closures are common and without notice, and it's not known if a specific tour van will get through until they reach the area. If the tour cannot do the loop, it would turn around after Hana, with the main missed stop Lindbergh's grave. Guests would still see virtually the entire popular Road Hana Tour route, with the scenic coastal views, black sand beach and waterfalls (including swimming opportunities), and more; it just would return the way it came (on the better maintained road).

• Tour guides who drive this route multiple times a week, often for years, know how to drive it safely and in a way that reduces motion sickness
• Local tour guides add a lot of interesting context regarding the culture and history of Hawaii, and their humor adds to the fun of the day
• Rental car companies (with the exception of those specializing in 4wd vehicles) prohibit driving on unpaved surfaces, which includes part of the backside/loop. Note: there is some grey area/debate in terms of legal/financial risk, but nevertheless needing assistance in this remote area could not only be very expensive but also a protracted headache, especially since cellphone reception is often non-existent and the nearest tow truck is at least a hour away.

This map shows a general representation of the Road to Hana route for this tour, with the tour going clockwise around the eastern half of Maui. This map does not show the free pick-ups/drop-offs from lodgings around the island (i.e. West Maui / South Maui), the Pride of America cruise ship port in Kahului, and the airport in Kahului.

The following are a mixture of stops ("S"), quick photo opportunities ("P"), and drive throughs ("D"), listed in chronological order. Stops in bold are typically longer (20-60 minutes), whereas others are 5-20 minutes. There may be other photo ops and brief stops not listed below at the discretion of the guide based on the pace of the tour, crowds, makeup of group, etc.

Please note that this itinerary cannot be guaranteed depending on weather, unexpected closures, and timing. 

The schedule and stops have been set to deliver an optimal and accurate experience to all guests on this tour and to stay on track given some constraints (e.g., pre-arranged lunch, paid reservations at the black sand beach, not returning at dark, avoiding peak crowds). Private tours (8+ paid seats) are still expected to follow the general itinerary, and any flexibility is at the discretion of the guide/driver and need to also take into account where the tour vehicle can legally stop.

The tour picks up at virtually all hotels and condos, including in Lahaina, Ka'anapali, Kihei, Wailea, and elsewhere. The exact pick-up time will be provided to you with the email confirmation, based on the lodging you provide at checkout. A list of the most common lodgings with pickups can be found as part of the online booking process. It will likely be around 7-8 am, with a return around 5-7 pm. However, If you are staying in a residential area (e.g., private house or community), you will likely have to meet at a designated public location nearby due to government regulations (feel free to make a note at checkout whether you prefer a short walk or drive). 

If you are staying in Paia, Haiku, or Upcountry (Makawao, Pukalani, Kula), you will need to meet in Kahului at a shopping center (Maui Marketplace, with free parking), although exceptions may be possible, especially for larger groups.

If you are staying in Hana, unfortunately this tour is not a good fit.

For those flying in for the day from another island, this tour starts conveniently near the start of the Road to Hana in Kahului. Since it isn't allowed to pickup directly at the airport, pickup is at 7:45 am at the Maui Marketplace shopping center only a couple of miles from the airport via taxi/Uber/Lyft. It's a small airport, and your flight can arrive as late as 7:30 am for this tour (there is a grace period with the 7:45 am pickup). The tour can drop off directly at the airport after the tour around 5-5:30 pm, so departing flights should be after 6:45-7 pm. 

For those flying to outside Hawaii, we generally recommend if possible to do this full day tour not on your travel day. However, if you are flying out after 8:30 pm, you should be able to do the full tour. You would return to your hotel by 5-7 pm (depending on hotel). Possible traffic, as well as possible 1+ hour airport security lines, is why only such a late flight is advised. 

Please note the tour cannot store or handle any luggage; you can only bring a day bag that fits in your seat on the van. If you have a car rental, you could meet the tour for pick-up at Maui Marketplace in Kahului (near the airport), and you could keep your luggage in your car and afterwards you could drive to the airport after being dropped off at your car around 5-6 pm. For storage solutions in Kahului near the airport, you can check an app .

Cruise Ship

For the Norwegian Cruise Line Pride of America , the tour picks up passengers from this ship every Sunday. It's actually quite close to where the tour naturally begins. Pick-up time is upon arrival of the ship around 8 am, and the van will be there when you arrive and disembark the ship. Please ensure you choose the first day you're on Maui (Sunday), since the tour concludes in the evening (around 4:30-6 pm) and therefore Monday doesn't work. 

For the  Norwegian Spirit or Sun , the tour is compatible and bookable (if still available) in 2024 on Oct 9, Oct 19, Nov 5, Nov 6, Nov 7, and Nov 21.

If you're coming in to port at Kahului on another cruise ship , if  it arrives 7 am or earlier and departs 7 pm or later, as listed in the official port schedule , then the standard tour would work  and you can proceed with booking.

For other ships that arrive after 7 am or depart before 7 pm, you would need to contact us to inquire. If it's close, it may still work with the standard tour. Otherwise, it may require a custom excursion whereby 8 seats will need to be paid for, whether you buy out the van as a private tour or recruit others from your ship as has been done successfully using online cruise forums. For custom excursions outside the standard tour times, depending on the pick-up time, the required return time, and the pace of the tour, it will likely have to return shortly after Hana (like most other tours) rather than do the full loop; most stops will still be made with the exception of Lindbergh's grave. The return time to Kahului for the standard tour is around 5-6 pm, or it can be 4-5 pm if doing a modified tour that turns around near Hana.

Please note that although a concerted effort will be made to return you to the port with plenty of time to spare for your cruise departure, in the event of an unexpected delay for any reason (e.g., road closure, weather disaster, van breakdown, guest medical emergency), the tour cannot be held liable for any costs incurred with missing your cruise ship, and a waiver will need to be signed confirming this. Missing a cruise ship departure has never happened before, though.

On Sundays, this tour serves those coming in to Kahului on the Pride of America cruise ship! Pickup is around 8 am (synced with the ship's arrival) and dropoff is around 5 pm at the cruise terminal. Please note that Sundays often book up weeks or months in advance, and the price is $299/person. If you don't see availability, please submit our waitlist form ; if it's at least a few weeks away, there is a solid chance we could open up another van, or if it's within a few weeks, cancellations from others do happen, including last-minute.

Unlike the larger bus tour provided through the cruise ship that includes only a box lunch and turns around in Hana to go back the same windy way, our tour is small group (8 max), includes a made-to-order hearty hot lunch at a local favorite near Hana, and does a loop around the entire eastern side of the island of Maui (no turning around).

Please choose the second option (not Standard) in the booking form; however, if the Standard option is also showing on a Sunday, which may be the case on rare occasions within the next couple of weeks, feel free to book the Standard option for a lower price (still with pickup at the cruise ship).

Due to the small size of the tour (8 people or less, unless private) and that a car seat is legally required for ages 5 & under (therefore taking up at least one seat), children are the same price as adults.

To book as a private tour, if you are less than 8 people, you will need to book 8 seats (and make a note at checkout the actual number of people); if you are 8 people (up to 12), please book the number of seats matching the number of people in your party and it will be private. The tour usually sells out all year round, so a private tour without booking 8 seats is otherwise unlikely; the remaining seats would likely be filled by others, even just 1 remaining seat. For parties more than 12, please see FAQ below for more details.

• Within 48 hours of the tour date? Our booking calendar above is generally kept up-to-date and will show any availability until ~5 pm the day before. If showing, please proceed with booking online at your earliest. Or if you prefer, feel free to text us to doublecheck since last-minute availability can change quickly.
• If you can only do a Sunday and are not coming in on the Pride of America cruise ship, please go ahead and book Option 2: Pride of America cruise ship and just make a note at checkout of your lodging. The tour is the same and you can be picked up at your lodging.

If the first day, you risk a flight delay/cancellation impacting your arrival and missing the tour (trip insurance would be advised for these situations). Can you accommodate my group that is larger than 8?

Yes, individual groups that are larger than 8 can be accommodated. The 8 person maximum only applies for groups that are mixed with others. A single van has 12 seats, although in general no more than 10 is recommended on one van for optimal comfort on this full day tour, unless you have younger children and don't mind being cozy. If you have more than 10-12, we can put you on an additional van(s), pending availability, in which case please note at checkout the number count for each van. Again, you would need to pay for 8 seats on each van for them each to be private.

Please note that if your group does more than one van, not all stops will be made together. About 60% of the stops can be made together, including all the longer stops, but many of the shorter stops don't have enough room for both vans to safely park at the same time. This is true for all Road to Hana tours.

Does this tour stop at "the Red Sand Beach"?

Like other Road to Hana Tours, this tour does not stop at the Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu) due to a precarious cliff-side trail to get to it. Injuries are common involving tourists trying to reach this beach (example 1 ,  2  &  3 ). The tour does stop at Koki Beach, which has a mixture of red, black, and white sand.

Does the tour stop at O’heo Gulch (often known as “Seven Sacred Pools”)?

It has been closed off for many years with metal fencing. Swimming is not permitted due to often hazardous conditions and multiple injuries and deaths that have occurred in the recent past (although not on this tour). No tour companies stop here, but our tour that does the full loop passes by it and includes a view down of the pools from the bridge directly above it for a photo op. There are many other scenic and memorable waterfalls on the tour, including for swimming.

What is breakfast?

Fresh baked goods made with local tropical ingredients from a famous bakery, with flavors including Coconut Macnut, Strawberry Guava, Banana Macnut, and Pineapple. Also fresh Maui-grown fruit served include premium Maui Gold pineapple and strawberries from Kula Maui. Note: the pastries have gluten, so only fresh fruit would be available for those avoiding gluten. Hot coffee is not served and shouldn't be brought on the tour due to safety/liability issues.

What is lunch?

Lunch is a hot and made-to-order Hawaiian BBQ with 3-4 choices, including a favorite hulihuli chicken and daily specials, from a popular local food stand in Hana that has been featured on Gordon Ramsey's  Uncharted tv show. 

Vegetarians can be accommodated; please answer the dietary restrictions question at checkout since advance notice is required (generally 48 hours). The vegetarian meal is generally a veggie pattie, corn, rice, and salad, although this can vary. Vegans might want to consider bringing some of their own food, since a fully vegan meal is not currently offered. For gluten-free eaters (also note in advance), the main protein and rice would be fine, but the side mac salad would be skipped (or may be replaced with a green salad).

What van is used?

The tour uses the popular Ford Transit touring van. They are designed for 14 people, but the tour only has 8 passengers max (on non-private tours). Comfortable seats, customized enhanced suspension system, and large windows. Not a low-ceiling cargo van like some other tour companies. Seating is mostly attached, but individual seats are molded. 

Couples usually end up having their own row (since there are 4 rows with 3-4 seats in each row for a total of only 8 passengers) which is better for maneuverability and comfort than if it was stand-alone "captain seats" and so they can easily see views on either side -- no risk of being stuck on a side with limited views. 

Photos of the van can be seen in the photo gallery (note: you need to scroll through to the end). Vans are maintained daily and replaced annually. Safety and comfort are a top priority.

What is the age minimum?

While there is no age minimum, you are responsible for providing a child car seat for any child age 5 & under, as required by law. Please consider the length of the tour (9-12 hours), much of it in a van, in determining whether this tour is a good fit for your child and that your child won't significantly detract from the experience of other passengers (if non-private tour).

Any recommendations on which day to book?

For all our outdoor tours, we recommend early in your trip in case weather cancels it and therefore you have a better chance of being able to reschedule. If you're not coming in on a cruise ship, we recommend avoiding Sundays, which are the busiest day due to the large Pride of America cruise ship in port every Sunday. Saturdays and Mondays may also be busier than average, although there may also be large conferences/conventions and other cruise ships on other days too. The tour starts early and plans stops strategically to best mitigate crowd issues.

Are there restroom stops along the way?

Yes, the tour has restroom stops planned throughout the day, as needed. If you require frequent access to a bathroom, this 12-hour tour may not be for you, since there are usually only about 5-6 restroom stops, with the longest gap being 2-2.5 hours. However, by request, 3 more bathroom stops could be added, and the longest gap reduced to 1.5 hours.

Are there swimming opportunities?

On most tours, there is at least one swimming opportunity at a beach (black, red, or white sand beach, depending on conditions) and/or waterfall for those who wish to swim. If interested, it is recommended to wear a bathing suit and bring a towel.

In some cases, recent or current rains may prevent swimming, which can often be the case during the wet season (Nov-Apr). If swimming is important to you, you can always inquire about conditions at least 48 hours prior to the tour (so you can reschedule/cancel if you wish without penalty). You should also tell your tour guide when you start the tour of your swimming preference, and they will do their best to accommodate. 

How much physical exertion is on this tour?

Minimal. There are some possible short trails, including to a bamboo forest and some waterfalls, but these are optional and the tour guide will use their judgment in determining which stops are most appropriate for the guests on the tour. At the time of booking, there is a place to indicate any physical limitations, and some effort is made to combine parties with similar physical abilities. All guests must be able to get on and off the van without assistance from the driver.

There is a weight maximum of 320 lbs / 145 kgs, as above that has damaged the vehicle. This policy is strictly enforced and refunds are not given if the guest cannot participate and it's within 48 hours of the tour.  Weight is subject to being checked at pickup.

Is this tour appropriate for wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, or strollers?

No. Federal/state law prevents the tour from taking these items onboard because it is not an ADA-compliant van and these objects can serve as hazardous projectiles. Since ADA vans are wider, most, if not all, Road to Hana Tours have this restriction (if operated legally). Canes are permitted but not walking sticks. There is a low step to get on the van, and all guests must be able to get on and off the van without assistance from the driver. Note: sitting in the front passenger seat (next to the driver) is prohibited by law for safety reasons.

In addition to comfortable seating on the van with large windows, there are benches and tables at some of the stops, particularly those where the tour stops for an extended period.

Anyone who should not go on this tour?

It is not recommended if you are pregnant (2nd or 3rd trimester) or have a bad back due to a rough section of the road past Hana which is over 10 miles long and takes about a hour to get through. If you still decide to go, you will need to sign a waiver at check-in. Due to van restrictions and safety concerns, those over 320 lbs / 145 kg unfortunately will not be able to participate. Finally, guests should be able to enter/exit the van without assistance from the guide/driver and in a timely manner.

Is alcohol allowed on this tour?

Alcohol is not permitted on the tour, per government regulations. This is the case for all tours on the Road to Hana.

Will I get motion sick?

The drivers are highly trained and experienced, and even guests who typically get motion sick are pleasantly surprised how they don't in the vans customized for this route (a benefit of taking a tour). In addition, doing the loop route means you are not coming back the more windy way you took to Hana; the backside return is much more straight. 

To minimize, you should also try to sit near the front and perhaps consider taking medicine (such as Dramamine, or Hana Tonic that can be found at ABC Stores on the island). 

Seating is not assigned and passengers are usually picked up at different times and locations depending on the final makeup of the tour that isn't known until the day before, so seating requests cannot be accommodated and seating is first-come, first-served. However, feel free to make a note at checkout so the tour is aware.

Will I be on the same van as others traveling with me if they book separately?

There are multiple vans that go out on the same day and that don't generally stay together. Therefore, if booking separately, please answer the question at checkout about you being with another party so we can ensure you are on the same van.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Although passing showers are not uncommon on the lush rainforest side of the island, if there is a storm forecast or any other situation that would make the tour possibly unsafe for the driver and passengers, the tour will be cancelled. You will be contacted and asked to reschedule or receive a full refund.

The most popular highway in Hawaii will take you to waterfalls and clifftop views but is driving the Road to Hana worth it for your Maui vacation? 

The Road to Hana is a top three can’t-miss Maui thing to do . There’s no place else in the country where you will see diverse rainforests, swim under waterfalls, walk on black sand beaches, experience history, and drive the windy roads with one-lane bridges. The Road to Hana is an all-day adventure full of unique stops that lead you to Hana Town and even past the town.

The only times we don’t recommend driving the Road to Hana is when visitors aren’t staying for long and/or they have other priorities on their bucket list (e.g., whale watching , Haleakala , snorkeling at the best beaches ).

We have a hard time telling visitors that the Road to Hana isn’t worth it. I’m hard-pressed to find a comparable drive in Hawaii or anywhere in the world (we love to travel!). 

Kauai’s End of the Road drive (Kuhio Highway) on the North Shore is gorgeous but doesn’t have as many stops or amazing sights. Driving up to Haleakala has great views and upcountry things to do but doesn’t have a lush rainforest or waterfalls.

As everyone will tell you, the Road to Hana is all about the journey, not the destination. While I am tired of the cliche, they are correct. 

Hana is a lovely small town but the attraction is the drive with the many stops. It is a choose-your-own – adventure of what you will see and experience.

The real debate is to decide if you’d rather do other Maui activities , drive yourself, or do a guided tour .

Guided tours for the Road to Hana start at $210 for an adult with Hana and Beyond . That is the lowest price with good service and a comfortable shuttle van that we have seen.

Driving yourself may save you about $500 for a day trip to Hana for a family of four compared to doing a guided tour.

To drive yourself on the Road to Hana you will have the cost of the rental car for the day(s), gasoline, and lunch. Most of the stops on the Road to Hana are free (e.g., hikes and views) or low-cost (e.g., banana bread stops and black sand beach reservations).

Overall, the Road to Hana is a good value for all you get to see and do in one day compared to loading a day of things to do on Maui with kids .

Note: Prices may change after writing this article so click the link above to learn more and confirm the price. But, prices are more likely to go up than down for a Road to Hana tour.

The Road to Hana follows the Hana Highway from Kahului to Hana, about 52 miles. If you drive the road without making stops, it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. 

With stops, you can expect a 10 to 12-hour day to drive the Road to Hana.

You are in charge of your schedule for the day when you drive yourself compared to a guided tour. Decide how long you want to stay at each location based on how much you like it. Some stops, like the Rainbow Eucalyptus, take 10 minutes while Maui’s Garden of Eden may take 1.5 hours.

Pick the Road to Hana Stops You Want to Do

This is perhaps the biggest advantage of going on the Road to Hana and driving yourself. Make the Road to Hana worth it by finding and visiting the stops that interest you and the family the most. 

There are two roads to Hana. Some visitors prefer to brave the rough, partially paved reverse way to Hana. See the 5 Routes for the Road to Hana to choose your route and the stops along the route (example itineraries included). Do the stops that a guided tour may not have on their agenda. For example, guided tours rarely, if ever, include hiking as hikes are time-consuming and not best for everyone. You can opt for a private Road to Hana tour , but a hike may still be hard to fit in.

Sense of Adventure

Heading out on the Hana Highway is an adventure. The road won’t kill you, hopefully, but it is a thrilling drive and so are some of the hikes and other things to do along the road. 

I’m not saying you should go to secret spots, illegal bamboo forest hikes, or roam on private property. But, the all-day trip is a break from the Maui beaches and tourist towns (but we do love Lahaina !) 

Shared Experience with Your Travel Partners

This may be the main reason why the Road to Hana is worth it. Or, perhaps the worst (see below). 

Nothing like a family road trip on Maui to create wonderful memories and family pictures. Or a honeymoon or anniversary trip in a convertible driving the Road to Hana to bring people together. The drive to Hana is one you will never forget with your family or partner.

Disadvantages: Is the Road to Hana Worth It?

The advantages paint a rosy picture of driving the Road to Hana. Perhaps I should have put the disadvantages at the top to help decide if driving the Road to Hana is worth it!

Road to Hana Is Not an Easy Drive

The biggest reason the Road to Hana is not worth driving is that it is one of the most dangerous roads in the country. While the road is better paved and well marked compared to the road fifty years ago, the 46 one-lane bridges, cliff-edges, lack of a shoulder, and 620 curves make the road a tough drive. 

As my last Hana tour guide would say, let the professionals drive the road and save yourself the white-knuckled drive!

All those curves make it hard for those travelers who get motion sickness. 

If a member of your family suffers from motion sickness, then the Road to Hana may not be worth it for them. 

Ginger chews are handed out by tour guides and sold at most food stands along the drive. We recommend taking Dramamine the night before the trip.

Driving yourself means you have to find places to stop. Your navigational beacons for popular Road to Hana stops are highway mile markers in tour books and itineraries . Therefore, one has to pay close attention to the mile marker signs along the road. 

Some tour guides will even say mile marker 33.4 to indicate the actual stop is half a mile past the sign.

Road to Hana apps like GyPSy app and Shaka Guides use GPS to alert you when you’re getting close to a stop. That is a huge help when driving the road yourself. Plus they provide history and other bits of interesting facts along the drive.

Reservations are Required for the Black Sand Beach

The famous black sand beach on the Road to Hana is at Wai’anapanapa State Park. The beach is located near the end of the road, close to the entrance of Hana Town.

The state park now requires parking and entrance reservations. You can make the reservations here for the black sand beach . Reservations can be hard to get for the date and the time you want to enter the park, especially during the busy Christmas season and summer season.

Another reason to do a Road to Hana guided tour is the tour company will get the reservation for you. 

There is another black sand beach along the Road to Hana but a Jeep or 4WD vehicle is recommended to drive down to it. 

Most visitors experience the Road to Hana in one, long day. Hence, we give tips on how to drive in one day . But, many families and drivers don’t like being in the car for 10 to 12 hours. 

You can stay the night in Hana but lodging options are limited and expensive. The Hana-Maui Resort is the most luxurious place to stay or you can opt to camp at Wai’anapanapa State Park.

Divorce Road

The Road to Hana is nicknamed the Divorce Road. While heading out with a loved one on the drive will create a lot of memories, the stress of the drive may be your undoing. 

Locals love to joke that while two people will survive the drive to Hana, their marriage may not. 

Perhaps it is best to drive to Hana and stay at the romantic Hana-Maui Resort for one night to regroup before heading back!l 

Driving the Road to Hana is a tough drive and accidents along the road are common. People stop abruptly for construction, traffic, or rubber-neck drivers looking at views resulting in fender benders. Also, the lack of a shoulder makes scratching the side of your car more likely. 

Some visitors may not like the idea of taking a rental car out on the Road to Hana. But also, rental car companies don’t like you taking their cars on certain parts of the road.

The reverse road to Hana ( as the Shaka tour is called ) is to drive from Upcountry Maui, behind Haleakala, and into Hana. This road is unpaved or poorly paved for most of the drive. There is also about two miles of one-lane road along a cliff that will make your heart race. 

Car rental companies have in their contract that they will not send emergency services if you get stuck on the backside of Haleakala.

Car break-ins are not common along the Road to Hana but they can happen. Parking along the road for hiking trails (usually not legal due to private property) makes your rental car an easy target for break-ins . 

The last consideration for deciding if the Road to Hana is worth it is you have to manage your time when driving. We do not recommend driving the Road to Hana at night. If you’re not staying in Hana , then you will need to get back before sunset.

Be aware of how long the stops are taking and what may need to get cut from your agenda.

The Road to Hana is in East Maui, the windward side of the island. The windward side receives rain and adverse weather due to the trade winds. Hence, the Road to Hana is in a rainforest.

You should expect rain on your drive to Hana. The wet season on Maui is October through April but even during the summer, rain is normal. During the winter, big storms can cause flash floods and landslides along the road.

Alternatives for Driving the Road to Hana

Instead of driving yourself on the Road to Hana, a guided tour is a great option. 

We recommend doing a tour with an experienced local guide, large viewing windows, comfortable seats, and only going to safe, legal, epic spots! In order to truly experience Hana, it helps to know more about the history, fauna, and legends of the area.

• Waihe’e Ridge Trail – while not an easy Maui hike, the ridge is one of Maui’s most popular hikes in a jungle landscape.

Topping many Maui visitor's to-do list is driving the Road to Hana. Sounding like a mythical journey, Hana is an actual town on the scenic highway (Highway 360). Traveling along Maui's beautiful coastline, travelers are met with a road that includes about 600 curves, more than 50 bridges and 60 cascading waterfalls that line the island's lush eastern shore. The Road to Hana might seem short at 52 miles, but the journey will most likely take all day given the number of scenic lookouts and other places to stop. If you'd rather let someone else do the driving, there are several tour companies that offer tours in luxury vans, including Valley Isle Excursions and Temptation Tours . Though pricier than driving yourself, taking a tour allows you to focus on the incredible scenery while someone else navigates the winding curves. Plus, most tours are guided.

If you decide to drive yourself, there are several notable photo opportunities along the way, including the Twin Falls around the 2-mile marker (driving from Kahului to Hana); and the Upper Waikani Falls around the 19-mile marker. Wai'anapanapa State Park for the black sand beach and Ho'okipa Beach for its big waves are also popular stops. Since the trip will take visitors all day, snacks and a cooler with drinks are advised. If you plan to hike, you'll want to bring suitable shoes that can don't mind getting muddy, as well as bug repellent.

Those who have driven the Road to Hana highly recommend taking your time (an entire day) and stopping as often as possible. Reviewers also recommend starting your drive early in the morning, as the road grows congested as the day progresses. Also, some travelers noted that the winding route can be uncomfortable for those prone to motion sickness – make sure to take it slow and allow for plenty of time outside the car. Other reviewers recommend downloading an audio guide or app that you can access offline (service is spotty). A guide will help you decide which stops to make along the way.

Most people start their trip in Kahului (home to Maui's main airport) with the intention of motoring the 52 miles to Hana. There is no cost to drive along the highway. As a top attraction on Maui, Haleakala National Park is home to a dormant volcano crater with its desert-like landscape, sacred sites and a waterfall-laden tropical oasis near the coastline. Its name means "house of sun" and the entire park occupies 30,000 acres of land on Maui, though most visitors focus on a few specific areas of the park. Of course, there's the volcano: Haleakala's summit stands more than 10,000 feet above sea level (in fact, you can see three different islands from its peak on a clear day). For a once-in-lifetime experience plan your visit to the summit to see the sunrise (keep in mind visitors have to make reservations online in advance and a small fee is required). A winding, sometimes steep road (Route 378) takes visitors to the top. At 10,000 feet the air is thin and chilly, according to park rangers, so layers are advised.

We had a great time on this tour! Billy was our driver (a great driver) and he was very friendly, fun, informative and accommodating. When they offer the poncho, take it! You will be glad you did!! We ended with a delicious breakfast at Maui Tropical Plantation.

I always wanted to do Road to Hāna but was always intimidated by driving the daunting, windy, wet roads on my own. So I decided to book this trip and I was very grateful I did! Joe the tour guide was wonderful. He explained things along the drive so it was informative! We stopped at different spots to take pictures/use bathroom. There were three main stops, one for lunch and then the black sand beach and a gorgeous fresh waterfall lagoon. It was paradise and I’m glad I was able to have Joe drive while I could enjoy the views! Highly recommend!

Our trip was fabulous! Billy and Alika were amazing tour guides/drivers! They helped us understand the Hawaiian culture more. They go the extra mile to make the excursion amazing, including providing jackets at the top! Highly recommend using Valley Isle Tours!

The whole experience was excellent. The tour itself was beautiful, scenic, and a must-do for anyone traveling to Maui. And our guide, Travis, was fantastic! He knew every detail of the roads, was an excellent driver, provided tons of relevant history and information, and kept everyone engaged and having fun. He also seemed to know everyone along the way (relatives and friends), and provided lots of good tips about following the rules posted on signs, being respectful, etc. He really did make the trip one to remember.

We had an amazing day. The beauty of what we saw is beyond words. Moa was the best guide. He made it fun and kept us laughing g and informed the whole way. Swimming at Black Sand Beach and in the waterfall were so much fun.

Billy picked me up at my hotel and drove us up to the volcano rim for this beautiful experience. Abe gave u a lot of good info as well as kept us warm with coat like ponchos. Of course the sunrise was just breathtaking. A one in a life time experience. Then, we had a very good breakfast, at a great restaurant. I wasn't expecting that! I am so glad I did this tour!

This trip was incredible. Billy our driver was great. He was informative, funny, and most importantly friendly. We became ohana right from the beginning. Billy got us the best spot to watch the sunrise. He’s been doing the Haleakala tour for a long time and his love of his job shows. I would highly recommend Valley Isle to anyone. We did the road to Hana with them earlier in the week and that was awesome too. The sunrise tour is a must do if you visit Maui. I’d also recommend requesting Billy as your driver. You won’t be disappointed.
