The trip to Kolkata would be incomplete without visiting the Jorasanko Thakur Bari or the ancestral house of the Tagores. The most eminent among them was Rabindranath Tagore, a poet, artist, and the first Asian to be honoured with a Nobel Prize.

The glorious mansion is one of the most beautiful heritage buildings of Kolkata, the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore and also the place where he spent his childhood and later years. The Thakur Bari was also the residence of Gaganendranath and Abanindranath Tagore, the founders of Bengal School of Art.

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari has been converted into Rabindra Bharati University, a centre for Indian Classical Fine Arts and quality education. The building also houses a splendid museum, Rabindra Bharati Museum which was established in 1961 exhibiting intimate stories from the lives of the Tagores.

Thakur Bari, as it is popularly called by the locals has remained the nerve centre of Bengal’s art and cultural reformation including Bengal Renaissance and Brahmo Samaj. The place is now a pilgrimage for artists and art lovers from all over.

The university holds an annual cultural programme every year on Tagore’s birthday on Panchise Baisakh (25th day of Baishakh).

Jorasanko Thakurbari History and Architecture

The history of Jorasanko Thakur Bari goes back to 1784 when a piece of land was gifted to Nilmoni Tagore on the east side of Chitpur Road after he left his family home due to irreconcilable disputes within the family. Nilmoni Tagore built a small house at Jorasanko.

The Thakur Bari was later expanded by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, the illustrious grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore in 18th century. Situated in the north of Kolkata, the mansion is located in Jorasanko, near Girish Park on Chittaranjan Avenue. The land was donated to Prince Dwarkanath Tagore by the famous Seth family. Rabindranath was born here in 1861 and spent a major part of his life in this home. It is here that the Nobel laureate passed away in 1941.

The name Jorasanko came from the fact that there are twin Shiva temples near the home.

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari is spread over 35000 square meters. The palatial brick red mansion was first started from a small house where different wings and alleys were added slowly to the original architecture.

The rounded verandah adds to the advantage that members could clearly watch programs of the natya manch that was at the centre of the house. Even at a time when the purdah system was at its prime, the Tagores never followed it at their home. The women of the family were equally entitled for open discussions regarding culture, literature, art, business and sundry. This very outlook of the family, later contributed to greater cultural changes in the society.

Rabindra bharati museum at jorasanko thakurbari.

In 1959, the Government of West Bengal planned to establish a University as a memorial to Rabindranath Tagore. This was achieved during the birth centenary of the poet when the Rabindra Bharati University was founded on May 8, 1961 under Rabindra Bharati Act at his residential house in Jorasanko for better learning and culture, particularly in music, dance and drama.

The Rabindra Bharati Museum was established in the following year. The University was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on Tagore’s birth centenary, 8 May 1962.

Within the complex is Maharishi Bhavan, named after the poet’s father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, where, as the plaque outside reads, “Rabindranath was born breathed his last here.” Today this house is a museum that has three galleries dedicated to Tagore, other eminent members of Tagore family and Bengal Renaissance. The galleries provide glimpses of intimate family photographs, life size portraits and Tagore’s evolution as a poet and philosopher.

The Rabindra Bharati Museum has an overall collection of 2071 books, 770 journals, 16 paintings, 3297 photographs, 27 crafts and sculptures, 208 personalia and 3 pieces of furniture.

The first gallery showcases the life of Tagore and his works. The remaining two galleries exhibit stories about his family and other stalwarts of 19th Century Renaissance Bengal. like Dwarakanath, Debendranath, Rabindranath, Abanindranath, Gaganendranath, etc.

The two galleries on Art, display paintings of Bengal School and portrait paintings of Tagore house drawn mainly by the Anglo- Indian School (western art gallery). Apart from these there are galleries displaying life and activities of Rabindranath Tagore.

The museum also has the Japan Gallery, China Gallery, the US Gallery and the Hungary Gallery that explore Rabindranath’s visit and relations with these countries. There are more than 700 paintings along with manuscripts, books and other antiques.

The museum also boasts of a unique collection of around 3000 photographs placed on display. It has a section dedicated to old musical records.

Inside Rabindranath Tagore’s Room, His Paintings and, His Car

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the house. The room where Tagore lived and died is preserved very well with all belongings in the same place and same way as they used to be. No one is allowed to touch the artefacts. The self- composed wedding invitation card is also one of the highlights here.

Tagore’s original paintings are the most interesting of the exhibits. There are 40 original paintings on display which were acquired by the West Bengal Government from Rabindranath’s son. There are also the notebooks on which Tagore used to scribble. It is said that Tagore used to write and then blacken out the words that did not quite fit in. Doing so, he used to make paintings and sketches out of the blackened words.

Rabindranath’s Humber Car is parked in the backyard of the mansion and can easily be missed if one doesn’t know about it. The staff is cordial and helpful enough and show visitors around.

The Japanese Art Gallery

This section houses art and artworks from Japan that include works of few famous Japanese artists of those times. Some were Tagore’s collection that he picked up on his tours to Japan and few were the paintings done by artists themselves when they visited and stayed at Thakur Bari.

Events at Jorasanko Thakurbari

The Rabindra Bharti University, located in the vicinity of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, organises numerous events and programmes. The most important of all events is the Panchise Baisakh, a cultural programme that takes place on the poet's birthday. Other occasions, like Tagore's death anniversary, marked as Baishe Shravan at the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, are also celebrated with equal fervor. The university also organises a festival of arts known as Aban Mela.

The light and sound show at Jorasanko Thakur Bari is an interesting depiction of the life of Rabindranath Tagore. The show is conducted in Bengali and English, all the days of the week except for Mondays and Thursdays. Following are the timings of the show:

Jorasanko Thakur Bari – Tagore House in Kolkata

In today’s post let me take you on a virtual tour of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata, also known as the Tagore House. It is the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European Nobel laureate who was titled “Gurudev” (the great teacher) by Mahatma Gandhi.

Last month my parents and I finally visited Kolkata’s most revered building – no, it’s not the Victoria Memorial, it is Jorasanko Thakur Bari. Having lived in Kolkata most of my life, this was the first time I visited the house of Sri Rabindranath Tagore – arguably the greatest master of literature in the world! I know, the superlative will raise many eyebrows, and rightly so. “Greatest” is always an opinion, not a fact. I’m normally an objective person, at least I try to be, but for Tagore. Here my emotions have trumped my judgment and convinced me that he is indeed the greatest.

For the Bengalis, Tagore rules our hearts and dominates our lives. We sing his songs and read his poetries on national events, on religious celebrations like Durga Puja , on the new year, year-end, debates, discussions, farewells, and even funerals. So, as I walked from one room to the other the most absurd things happened. Goosebumps were raised without a trigger, tears filled my eyes for no apparent reason, flashbacks from my childhood readings appeared out of nowhere. Before I take you on this emotional journey with us, let’s begin with some important details.

How to reach Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata?

Jorasanko Thakur Bari is a famous address in Kolkata. It is located in Rabindra Sarani, just 800 meters away from Girish Park Metro station. So if you are put up close to any metro station, this is the best way to reach the Tagore House. If you decide to drive be ready to face some of the most traffic-prone roads in the city. On your way, you will pass by the Rabindra Mancha. The alleyway leading to Jorasanko Thakur bari has a big arch which is hard not to notice. As soon as you walk into the narrow lane, and enter the gates of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, it’s a whole new world that opens up in front of you.

A brief history of the Tagore House in Kolkata

The Tagore House of Kolkata is no longer just the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore. It has been transformed into a huge museum which focuses on the life and works of Rabindranath Tagore and other luminaries of the family. In the process, it encapsulates a quintessential part of the Bengal renaissance of the 19th and 20th century, in which the Tagores played an important role.

He raised this beautiful mansion in the heart of Calcutta, the house that saw the birth of such great sons of India. Quite the contrary to his father, Debendranath Tagore led a life of simplicity and came to be known as Devarshi – the great saint. Rabindranath was the youngest of his 14 children.

Many of his elder brothers were eminent personalities who contributed largely to the field of science, education, music, and art. His nephews Abanindranath and Gaganindranath Tagore were famous artists who founded the Bengal School of Arts.

Poet, novelist, short-story writer, playwright, music composer, painter, educationist, activist- Tagore donned way too many hats in a single lifetime than any mortal can imagine doing. He is the only writer whose songs are sung as the national anthem by two countries – India and Bangladesh.

In fact, Sri Lanka's national anthem is also composed by Tagore. A stroll in the house makes you wonder what went on behind these walls that nurtured so many historic personalities. The Rabindra Bharti Museum was established in 1961 and has since then been enhanced and enriched with art, literary archives and personal belongings of Tagore.

Our tour of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari

A tour of the Jorasanko museum is a unique experience – for me, it was an emotional roller-coaster ride. Throughout the tour, there is a soft Rabindra sangeet music playing in all the rooms. An eerie feeling engulfed me as I entered the room where Tagore took his last breath. Here’s a man who wrote his first poem at the age of eight.

He then went on to write so many poems, short stories, novels, songs, and plays, that it would take one an entire lifetime just to read all of them. Even in his death bed, when he was unable to write he asked his daughter to write what came to his mind. On the wall of the corridor was a painting of Tagore dressed as Balmiki in his own play, “Balmiki Pratibha”.

In school I read “Chele Bela”, Rabindranath’s account of his childhood in Jorasanko Thakur Bari of Kolkata. The chapters came to life as I walked from one room to the other. Tagore spent his childhood here before he went abroad for education. He didn’t complete his studies and came back. Later he recognized and promoted the importance of “return to the forests” in our education system.

He believed that true education cannot be achieved in a classroom of concrete but in the open-air. A strong proponent of reviving the Guru-shishya tradition in the modern landscape, Rabindranath invested his Nobel Prize money on establishing an open-air university in Shanti Niketan .

He named it “Vishwa Bharti” – where the world meets India. It embodied his vision of the East meets the West in a unique form of the education system. That is where he spent a large part of his life teaching and inspiring people all over the world.

You will come to know about these and many other interesting aspects of his life and works.

We peeked into the “aatur ghor”, the room where Tagore was born. We climbed a few stairs to reach the kitchen where Tagore’s wife, Mrinalini Devi cooked while he observed her culinary skills. Then there was the Bichitra Bhavan – a wall adorned with photographs of Tagore in his plays, his letters, articles, and lectures. These are some priced treasures. I have lost the count of galleries that were there in the museum, but I’ll talk about the ones that I loved the most. They had some incredible collection of works by Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath, Gaganindranath and the students of Bengal School of Art in one gallery. You can also find the paintbrushes and palette of Abanindranath Tagore there.

A notable thematic gallery was the one dedicated to the camaraderie of Rabindranath and Jagadish Chandra Bose , the world-renowned scientists known for his work on radioactive waves and botany. The two polymaths shared an intimate friendship that defied the age-old clash of science and literature. I had read a lot of Rabindranath, but this was unknown to me.

As expected, there were several archives and photographs of Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi in another gallery. Tagore worked closely with Gandhiji to fight against the partition of Bengal in 1905. There were some rare photographs of Tagore with young Bengali novelist Sarat Chandra Chatterjee , the firebrand poet Nazrul Islam and other legends of literature.

Then came the most interesting part. The museum also has galleries that are created and funded by foreign governments. The largest one is the Chinese Gallery, followed by the Japanese, American and Hungarian galleries in order of the size and richness of the collection. Tagore was invited by many countries for lectures and conferences. Tagore introduced India to the world and the world to India. In China , Tagore was revered long before his first visit in the 1920s. At the age of 20, Rabindranath wrote an essay “titled “Commerce of Killing people” vehemently criticizing the opium trade of China and British India. Tagore had later put great emphasis on how the two oldest civilizations of the world lived in harmony for centuries.

In the west, however, Rabindranath Tagore invoked mixed reactions – the one of reverence for the Gurudev and also of suspicion for his views of India’s freedom. And why not? He is probably the only poet in history to have rejected the Knighthood from the British queen, while India was still a British colony. The US gallery has photographs of Tagore with Helen Keller, Einstein, and many eminent politicians.

The Japanese gallery was my favorite though. With all the Japanese art-work this gallery is a great tribute by Japan to the genius. The Hungarian gallery is the smallest one but is beautifully designed. As a Bengali, I thought I knew a lot about Tagore and there would be few surprises. I couldn't be more wrong. I didn't know how much Tagore’s influence spread far and wide beyond the borders of India.

Our next lap of the tour was Bichitra Bhavan, a large hall with walls adorned by moments captured from Tagore’s plays. This includes the original photographs from plays of Rabindranath enacted in India and abroad during his lifetime. The last lap of the tour was at the topmost floor dedicated to the works of Rabindranath’s father, Debendranath Tagore.

He worked with closely with Ram Mohan Roy in bringing social reforms and later founded the Brahmo Samaj religion. Half of the floor is the roof where I managed to take a picture as it was outside the museum premises.

This is the stage where Durga Puja was performed until Debendranath Tagore renounced idol worship and took up Brahmo Samaj as a religion. You are not allowed to step on the stage for photography.

In fact there are several restrictions on photography, so these are the best Jorasanko Thakur Bari photos I could manage.

We went around the beautiful garden under the shade of old trees that were perhaps planted by Rabindranath himself. These were just random thoughts that filled my mind as I left Jorasanko Thakur Bari, looking forward to coming again.

Museum Timings and Fees

The museum fees have been increased but are still under-priced to make it accessible to all.

Entry fee – Rs. 30 for adult Indian citizens (and SAARC countries). For other nationals the charge is Rs. 150, that is, $2.19
Photography fee – Rs. 50 per device. Photography is allowed only outside the main museum, that is, in the courtyards.
Light and sound show fee – Rs. 50/-
Museum Timings – 10:30 am to 5 pm. Closed on Mondays and government holidays
Timing for light and sound show – 6:30 pm.

Every year on Paila Baisakh (the first day of Bengali Calendar) and birthdays of Rabindranath and other eminent poets of Bengal, there are special celebrations in the premises. Holi, also called “Bosonto utshob”(spring festival) is also celebrated in a distinct style in Thakur Bari. There is a small museum shop where you can buy some books, CDs, and photos. Personally, if there is something I could suggest to the authorities it would be to enhance the museum shop and have more in the collection. The museum shop in its current state was a major disappointment for me.

What to see in Kolkata around Jorasanko Thakur Bari

It will take you at least two hours to tour the Tagore House. To see each artwork and read everything put up on the walls it might take a whole day, and I know I wouldn't mind doing that. However, if you are in Kolkata for a short trip, you must also visit the Marble Palace only 1 km from here. After that, you can take a cab or bus to Newtown and visit Eco Park in Kolkata. It is the newest theme park in the city and my current favorite.

You can also visit some of the old charmers like Science City , Aquatica and Nicco Park (exactly in my order of preference). Finally make sure to drop in at the Viswa Bangla Gate , also known as the Kolkata Gate. This is another new gem in the crown of the City of Joy. Currently, you can visit the restaurant by booking your tickets on bookmyshow available from Rs. 100 onwards. India's first floating hotel located at the top also has a viewing gallery that offers a 360-degree view of the beautiful city. If planned properly you can also return to Rabindra Bharti for the light and sound show .

Jorasanko Thakur Bari is such a gem of a place. Truly an iconic landmark. Rabindranath Tagore is, of course, legendary and the place a must visit for Indians. It is a pity that we have been to Kolkata a few times but not have been able to visit here. We will definitely make it a point to visit the place on our next visit to the City of Joy. Timings : Jorasanko Thakur Bari timings are from 10:30 am to 5 pm on all days from Tuesday to Sunday. Monday is closed.

Entry fee : The entry fee for Indian adults is Rs. 20, for SAARC adults the fee is Rs. 30, and for adult foreigners it is Rs. 150. Entry fee for Indian students is Rs. 10, SAARC students are Rs. 20 and foreign students are Rs. 100. For physically challenged visitors, students up to 5 th standard and street children entry are free. However there is an additional fee for cameras which is Rs. 50.

How to reach

If you are travelling by air then the nearest airport to reach Jorasanko is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. From the airport the Thakur Bari is located at a distance of 14.6 km. It would take around 45 minutes to reach there from the airport. You can take a car or a cab or a yellow taxi to reach Thakur Bari most conveniently.

If you are travelling in a train the nearest major railway station to reach is the Howrah Railway station. From the Howrah Station the distance to reach Jorasanko Thakur Bari is 2.8 km and you can easily reach there in about 25 minutes. Another major railway station is the Sealdah Railway Station. From the Sealdah station the distance of Jorasanko is 4.3 km and you can reach there in a little more than half an hour. You can take yellow taxis or take a cab to reach the location conveniently.

You can get multiple city buses from various parts of the city to reach here. Also you can definitely take a car or take a cab to reach the Thakur Bari from different parts of the city.

If you are travelling by metro then the Jorasanko Thakur Bari nearest metro station is the Girish Park Metro Station. From there the Jorasanko Thakur Bari is located at a distance of only 900 metres. You can easily opt to walk that distance and you can reach the Thakur Bari in about 10 minutes from the metro station.

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari or the House of Thakurs is a glorious mansion which is the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore, the famous poet, lyricist and Nobel Laureate had spent his childhood and his later years in this very mansion. It is one of the most beautiful as well as important heritage buildings in the city of Kolkata. Also the founders of the Bengal School of Arts, Gaganendranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore also lived here at one point of time. At present however this mansion is converted into the Rabindra Bharati University. Furthermore the Rabindra Bharati University is one of the leading and reputed institutions for Indian Classical Art as well as education. Also the premise houses the Rabindra Bharati Museum as well that dates back to 1961.

The residence of the Thakurs or the Thakur Bari as it is popular as is one of the most important centres in promoting, propagating and preserving the art and culture of Bengal. At one point of time it was also one of the nerve centres of the Bengal Renaissance Movement and the formation of the Brahmo Samaj. Currently this is a favourite spot for art and art lovers and artists all over the world. Both amongst the locals as well as the tourists, the Jorasanko Thakur Bari is an important location to visit in Kolkata.

This location attracts a huge number of crowds on regular days. But on special occasion like Pochishe Boishakh that is the 25 th day of the month of Baisakh in Bengali calendar that is the birth date of Rabindranath Tagore, on Baishe Shravan that is 22 nd day of the Shravan month which is the death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, and on Basanta Utsav the location attracts even more visitors. Grand Cultural Programme and Celebrations take place on these days.

History and Architecture

The history of the Thakur Bari dates back to 1784. Nilmoni Tagore received a piece of land and built a small house in Jorasanko. Later Prince Dwarkanath Tagore the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore expanded this property in the 18 th century. Located in North Kolkata the Thakur Bari is situated in the Chittaranjan Avenue near Girish Park. This land was a gift to Prince Dwarkanath Tagore by the famous Seth Family and the grand mansion was constructed. This is the same house where Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 and spent his childhood and major part of his life. He also breathed his last in the same house in 1941.

The Thakur Bari is huge and spreads across a huge area of 3500 sq meters. It is a mansion made of red bricks and has different wings which got added in the later times as the construction proceeded. There are rounded verandahs here which add a different charm to the construction. And also these verandahs are apt for watching the programs of the natya mancha as well which is located at the centre of the house.

The Tagore family was always very aggressive with their thinking. Even during the time of the Purdah system they ideally never followed it. The women in their family enjoyed equal position, respect and recognition like the male members. Also the women of the Tagore family were equally a part of all sorts of discussions regarding art, culture, literature, business etc. The lifestyle of the family was very important in adding up to the development of greater cultural changes later in time.

Rabindra Bharati Museum

The Government of West Bengal planned the establishment of the Rabindra Bharati University as a memorial of Rabindranath Tagore. However the plan could be executed only during the birth centenary of the poet on 8 th May, 1961. Under the Rabindra Bharati Act the residential house of Tagore was turned into The Rabindra Bharati University. The Rabindra Bharati University was also established the next year. On 8 th May 1962 Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the museum. There is a complex, Maharishi Bhavan where the poet has breathed his last. Furthermore there are three galleries that reflect the photographs of Tagore and his intimate family members.

Overall the museum also has a huge collection of 2071 books, 770 journals, 3297 photographs, 16 paintings, 27 crafts and sculptures, pieces of furniture, 208 personalia. You will also find Tagore’s works and about his life in the first gallery here. The other two galleries exhibit the life and stories of different stalwarts of the Bengal Renaissance in the 19 th century.

Furthermore there are other galleries where you will find portraits and other paintings of the Tagore house. Also some galleries display the life and activities of Rabindranath Tagore. There are specific galleries here also like the Japan Gallery, Hungary Gallery, US Gallery etc. Other than that however there are around 700 paintings here along with some manuscripts, antiques and books. A unique collection of 3000 photographs are also present here.

Rabindranath Tagore’s Room

This is the room where Tagore lived and also breathed his last and the authorities have preserved everything in this room. You will find original paintings of Tagore, his notebooks, scribbles, his wedding invite and a lot more here. Also Tagore’s car is here at the backyard of the mansion.

Japanese Art Gallery

This section has some famous artworks by Japanese artists. Also some of the exhibits here are personal picks by Tagore during his tours to Japan.

Special events in Jorasanko Thakur Bari

One of the most important events is the Pochishe Boishakh Celebration here which is the birth anniversary of Tagore. Many notable artists perform here and the students of the University also take part in the cultural program. The death anniversary or Baishe Shravan is also celebrated here with equal enthusiasm. Another event here is the Basanta Utsav that is the Holi Celebration which is like a grand affair here.

Jorasanko Thakurbari Light and Sound Show

This light show at Jorasanko Thakur Bari is one of the major attractions here. The show however depicts the life of Rabindranath Tagore and is available in both Bengali and English languages. It takes place in the evening on all days except Mondays and Thursdays

From November to January the timing is 6 pm to 6:40 pm for the Bengali Show and from 7 pm to 7:40 pm for English Show. And from February to June the Bengali Show is from 7 pm to 7:40 pm and the English Show is from 8 pm to 8:40 pm.

Entry fee : The entry fee is Rs. 50 per person. For children below three years entry is free. Booking counter opens at 5:30 pm which is the Rabindra Sarani Gate.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata Overview

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata is located in Jorasanko, is the ancestral home of the first Indian and non-European Nobel laureate Kaviguru Rabindranath Thakur (Tagore). The Jorasanko Thakur Bari was built in 1785 in Jorasanko in the north of Kolkata in West Bengal in India. The place on which this paternal home stands today was given in by the famous Sett family of Burra bazar to Prince Dwarka Nath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore’s grandfather. Thakur Bari is spread over 35000 square meters.

Rabindranath Tagore was born here in 1861 and spent his entire childhood in this home itself. In the year 1961, as part of the centenary ceremony of Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore, then the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray lawfully procured the house. Thus, it came under the care of the Government. Finally on 8th May, 1961 the Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru established the Rabindra Bharati Museum in honor of Kaviguru. Jorasanko Thakur Bari is now located inside Rabindra Bharati University campus, the university was setup in 1962. The Museum is an integral part of the Rabindra Bharati University, for the progress of the greatest lesson in various disciplines of Humanities and Performing Arts.

Recently Thakur Bari, home to a campus of Rabindra Bharati University as well, would started its own delightful light-and-sound and also earth 3d show. At a time, 80 to 100 people would be able to view a show. Two shows per day would take place, starting from 7 pm. Initially, all the shows would be in Bengali. Later on, English and Hindi shows would be introduced. Tickets have to be bought for the show, separate from the one bought for the museum at Jorasanko Thakur Bari. The Rabindra Bharati Museum has a total collection 716 paintings, 208 persona Lia, 168 utensils, 89 spools, and 27 crafts and sculptures. In addition to these, there is an incredible collection of 2,701 books, 3746 archival documents, and 3297 photographs.

I visited this colonial mansion on a drizzling day with my friend and was amazed by the architectural pattern which blends Bengali, Islamic, Mughal, and Persian styles. The shadow of the buildings and the dark cloud above my head made the mansion hypnotise me.

This 150-old structure and long corridors with several pillars of a palatial mansion attract everyone in the town. The Thakurdalan, Andar mahal, Baithak khana, and wide balconies are its all-time-priced jewels.

The massive structure of monumental stone edifice, six massive fluted columns, stucco lotus flowers circling along the pillar, flight of stairs, red bricks, windows, and Thakurdalan give a decrepit look to the mansion.

The mansion was home to Nandalal Basu and Pashupati Basu, which now eco the glorious past.

The dark long corridors, stone idols, magnificent wall crafts, open façade, and Basu Bati’s walls keep whispering something in silence making it one of the best North Kolkata places to visit.

On the day of the Mahalaya , the Durga Puja festival, Ahiritola Ghat gains a new perspective as hundreds of people come here to start the Durga Puja rituals and Tarpan to their ancestors.

Ahritolla Ghat is just not a place to board or de-board from boats but a place that culminates the life of Ma Durga from beginning to end.

Every year Durga idols are immerged into the water at the Ahritolla Ghat at the end of the puja, submerging hundreds of stories of hopes, well wishes and love.

During my college days every day I use to come to Ahritolla Ghat, the air and commotion always keep the place so busy and happening.

People bathe in this water considering it removes all their sins. I use to take the ferry to reach Howrah Station which passes under the Howrah Bridge making me nostalgic.

I cannot assure you of holiness but seeing children making paper boats, jumping into the water from the ferry top, and people offering to Ma Ganga, make me content and happy.

Passing through the red house or “Laalbari” and the rail line, near Ahritola Ghat, always made me realize that Kolkata is still upholding the old heritage and British architecture.

Now, it’s been 7 years, walking down the Ahritolla ghat made me take a couple of pictures and tell you that it is one of the best North Kolkata places to visit.

Location: Hatkhola, Kolkata, West Bengal -700005, India

Time: The best time is early morning till 12 O’Clock

If you are coming from Sealdah Railway station take Bus 240 to reach Bagbaza. From here you can walk to Kumartuli.

Moreover, the easiest way to travel is by reaching Sovabazar Metro Station and walking for 8 minutes to Kumartuli.

The nominal fare would range from 15 Rupees – 25 Rupees.

In 2019, I went to Sovabazar Rajbari, a colonial massive mansion that stood upright giving the never-ending eerie feeling.

As I stood in the middle of the long corridor, I could see the huge tall pillar, shades of the windows, the colourful yet dull floor, worn off plasters from the wall has so many secrets of history.

Even in the broad daylight, the atmosphere feels like a movie set in a crime thriller or haunted story. Sovabazar Rajbari is one of the best North Kolkata Places to visit in October.

The Nat Mandap or Thakurdalan (open courtyard) at Sovabazar Rajbari supported by columns and arches has witnessed Durga Puja for many years which is performed with great pomp and show.

From birth, we Bengalis have heard stories of the incarnation of God and Goddesses from our grandmother to our mother making us believe that Durga Puja is a culture rather than a festival.

Back in 1757, Durga Puja was a matter of glamour, charm, and traditional culture of Bondedi Families (high-class aristocratic families).

Get off at Mahatma Gandhi Metro Station and walk. Or, if you are coming from Howrah Station then take any bus number 219, 44 A, 44 A/1 or any other buses that come to Mahatma Gandhi Road.

Burrabazar or Bara Bazar is one of the famous North Kolkata places to visit where you get everything under the sun. From vegetables, fruits, spices, sweets, clothes, pieces of jewellery, bridal wear, makeup, household stuff, too day-to-day stuff and kitchen stuff, all at wholesale price.

Since the times of the British Raj, the streets of Burrabazar are flamboyant with people buying and selling commercial things.

Bara Bazar is also called as wholesale hub of Kolkata where you will find that the human system is the biggest transport navigator. They carry the giant amount of weights on their head and shoulder navigating through the alleys and by-lanes of the busiest crowded streets.

For every shopaholic, Burrabazar is paradise because you can bargain on wholesale prices and can bring items at very cheap prices. Till now my parents bring papads, bhujiya, pickles, dry fruits, tea, and household stuff from Burrabazar.

Note: However, I would warn you that one-day shopping in Burrabazar will completely drain the life out of you and you need the famous “ S hatur Sharbot ” to boost yourself up.

About Jorasanko Thakur Bari

The foothold of the great Tagore family, Jorasanko Thakur Bari or Rabindra Bharati Museum is a witness to major historical turning points in modern Bengali history. Presently situated within the premise of the Rabindra Bharati University in North Kolkata, this house was constructed by the fountain head of the Thakur family, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore and over-the-top flamboyance defined every aspect of his life which clearly comes across when you visit the place. This house saw the convertion of Brahmoism into a religion under the auspices of the Kaviguru's father Debendranath Thakur, this house saw the Bengali Bard at his best, this house bears witness to the creation of fashion statements by the women in the family that created a stir throughout the elite society of the city and this house has seen what it means to be close to the great Rabindranath Tagore during the massive Bengali Renaissance.

The museum constructed, beautifully replicates the lifestyle of the Tagores and gives you a feeling of the city as it existed throughout the reign of Queen Victoria. You must make it a point to pay a visit to this place and if possible schedule it on the 8th of May or 7th of August, the birth and death anniversary of Tagore when the university organizes grand functions in honour of the Bard. Composing dance dramas to writing poetry, this man did it all and to get a taste of his legacy, this is where you should come.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata Overview

Located in North Kolkata, Jorasanko Thakur Bari is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the capital city. It was the ancestral house of the Tagore family and served as the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore. For those who love history and want to know more about the nationalist movements in India and especially Bengal, this Thakur Bari is the place to go. One can find the life and works of Rabindranath Tagore, a number of manuscripts, books, and many other antique items.

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari is now also known as the Rabindra Bharti Museum. The Thakur Bari has been transformed in a way by the authorities that it is now a true resemblance of the way the Tagore family lived and resided. People visit this museum to know more about the life and lifestyle of the Tagore family. It also tells a lot about the involvement that the Tagore family had in the Bengal Renaissance movement.

Architecture :

The museum or the Thakur Bari comprises three main galleries. The three galleries are distributed in such a way that it serves the tourists in a very comforting manner to view and experience each aspect of the house. In the first gallery, you can see the life and works of our national hero Rabindranath Tagore. In the second and third galleries, one can see the life of the Tagore family and its ancestry.

Constructed in the 18th century, the Jorasanko Thakur Bari is one of the oldest homes in Kolkata. It was built by the Jorasanko people and is located in the northern part of Kolkata. The Sett family of Burrabazaar donated the land for this home to the grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore and thus, this ancestral home was built here. The main reason why this Thakur Bari became so popular among the tourists is that it was the birthplace of the Indian nationalist and poet Mr. Rabindranath Tagore and it is this same home where he spent a majority of his childhood.

Best Time to Visit :

The Jorasanko Thakur Bari is located within the precincts of Rabindra Bharti University. There are many events that are organized by the university on a regular interval. On the birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, the university celebrates the Panchise Baisakh when a number of cultural programs take place. The Aban Mela is also a festival that is a great time to visit here. You can also see the Baishe Shravan program that is celebrated on the death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

How to Reach :

Located at the Dwarakanath Tagore Lane in Jorasanko in Kolkata, the Jorasanko Thakur Bari is easily accessible as it is inside the Rabindra Bharti University Campus. There are many modes to reach the campus and thus this Thakur Bari. There are many cabs and private buses that connect the Thakur Bari to the other parts of Kolkata. The metro also offers seamless connectivity to the place. You can avoid the traffic jams by getting down at the Girish Park metro station and taking a small walk from there.

On last day of our Kolkata, we planned to visit Jorasanko Thakur bari, the place where Rabindra Nath Tagore lived and now a brilliant museum having collection of his art-work, literature, photographs, paintings of cultural exchanges. I was not sure if it's worth visiting the place but it has lot more to offer apart from the beautiful haveli and the museum. Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the house in which the poet and first non-European Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born. It is also the place where he spent most of his childhood and did some important meetings. We took Metro from Elgin to Girish Park and walked to Jorasanko Thakur bari. Metro is most convenient way to reach this place if you are around Metro station. Otherwise, this area is prone to traffic jams, which we experienced when we planned to take taxi to return back. As we get down at Girish Park, cross the road and walk towards the main gate which takes you to Jorasanko Thakur bari. Anyone around this area would guide you easily, but you need to clearly remember the whole name of the place - 'Jorasanko Thakur bari'. If you only say Thakurbari, you may lead to wrong place. Tourists enjoying their reads while listening to Rabindra music. You would really enjoy the place if you have time, 2-3 hours. This place has lot to explore and know about Rabindra Nath Tagore, his work, family and influence in different countries and culture. But even if you have just 1 hr, that enough to get inspired and appreciate the kind of work he has done many decades ago. Jorasanko Thakur bari is located at a peacful place, although you have to cross through some of the busiest lanes of Kolkata. But you enter the campus of Jorasanko Thakur bari, you feel the peace and there is a sudden change. Green landscapes around vibrant haveli makes it more special. There is an entry ticket for the museum and it costs 10 rs per person, which is very reasonable. The way this place is maintained is awesome. Every hall and exhibition gallery is air conditioned and clean. They have appointed folks at different parts of the museum to ensure that visitors follow the right path and there are no unwanted elements inside. This place shows the grandness of Tagore's family but more than that it shows the great work he has done. He was into different types of art-forms and his work at Jorasanko Thakur bari is very inspiring for someone who has creative inclinations.The museum is huge and needs time to explore it well. We had to catch the train on same day, so didn't have option to stay back for long. Here is the main road near Jorasanko Thakur bari. It's empty because I waited for that and vehicles are behind me because of red-light :). After we took taxi, we spent 35 minutes on same road. Then we were regretting that we should have taken the Metro to go back.Vibha and I loved visiting this place and while coming out to the main road, we used hand-pulled Rickshaw. This is one thing we wanted to do in Kolkata.
