Transportation Info

We designed this Costa Rica itinerary to be done by rental car.

Having a car makes transportation a whole lot easier in this country.

It is possible to do this itinerary without four-wheel drive but we suggest at least renting something with decent clearance (as in a SUV).

All of the roads you will encounter are paved, but there are some steep hills in the Manuel Antonio area, and if you stay in the hills in Uvita.

If you are looking for a great car deal, we have partnered with our favorite rental car company in Costa Rica, Adobe , to give you a 10% discount, free extra drivers, a free cell phone to use, free roof racks, and more!

Save 10% on Car Rental

Drive to Jaco / SUP / Sunset Cocktails

You have arrived! Welcome to Costa Rica! We have a guide to landing at the San Jose airport which will walk you through the whole Customs process and help you pick up your rental car.

Because you don’t have a ton of time in Costa Rica, we suggest driving straight to Jaco after you arrive. The drive will only take about 1.5 hours. Of course, if you arrive in the evening you may prefer to spend one night near the airport. We have a guide to this area here .

Once you arrive in Jaco and check in to your hotel, it’s time to have some fun, but first, change into your swimsuit and get some lunch if you’re hungry!

After lunch head to one of the surf shops in town. Here you can take surf lessons, rent a surfboard or a stand-up paddleboard. We suggest going the SUP route if you are not an experienced surfer and don’t want to spend the money for a surf lesson.

If you’d like to book ahead of time you can do so on their website, but we’ve never had a problem just walking in and getting a SUP board. They can direct you to the best places to go. I suggest only doing an hour if it is your first time on a SUP (it is a serious arm workout), but if you love it you can always extend for longer of you’re having fun.

After a fun day of SUP or surfing, it’s time to get changed and get some sunset cocktails.

After a sunset cocktail head to one of our suggested dinner spots.

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before heading out to Manuel Antonio .

When you arrive you should check into your hotel and drop your stuff off before heading to the beach.

If it is too early to check in you can ask if there is a place where you can safely store your belongings in the hotel.

Costa Rica is pretty safe but petty crimes can be a problem sometimes. It’s best to never leave your belongings in the car unattended for more than a few minutes.

After dropping your stuff off it’s time to grab lunch and head to our favorite beach in Manuel Antonio.

As you turn onto the road for Playa Biesanz you will see a restaurant on the corner called Falafel Bar . This place is really cute and has some of the best falafel I’ve ever eaten.

You could also wait until you get to Playa Biesanz to get lunch. There are tons of locals selling things such as ceviche and barbeque on the beach. Although I’ve never actually eaten on Playa Biesanz I can tell you the barbeque smells amazing!

There isn’t a sign when you arrive at Playa Biesanz, but you will see cars lined up along the road as well as a parking attendant. If you get to a hotel called the Parador, you’ve gone too far. Just backtrack about thirty seconds down the road.

Pay the parking attendant his fee for watching your car. It is about $4.

The parking attendant will direct you to the path to the beach.

As you walk down to the beach look up in the trees, Every time we’ve visited there have been howler monkeys chilling out in the trees.

Playa Biesanz is not the most beautiful beach, but we like it because it is not filled with tourists, has a cool local feel, and the water is extremely calm. The locals working on the beach will rent anything you could ever want. We suggest doing some sea kayaking. They have very nice tandem kayaks which we were able to rent last time for $15 for one and a half hours.

You can also rent a snorkel mask here and do some swimming around. Playa Biesanz is a great place to swim out and see some fishies.

If you want to just relax there are people renting out lounge chairs as well.

In the late afternoon head back to your hotel and get ready for dinner.

We try to typically eat around 5pm when we are in Manuel Antonio because there are so many great restaurants with wonderful sunset views. You can check out our guide to Manuel Antonio some good options, but our favorite sunset dinner spot is called Ronny’s Place . It’s good to make a reservation here ahead of time.

Note: Make sure to bring bug spray with you to dinner. The second the sun goes down it tends to get really buggy.

After a nice dinner, we suggest just relaxing at your hotel or grabbing a cocktail at El Avion. El Avion is a restaurant located in an old cargo plane. We think the food is just average, but the bar part of the restaurant is actually located in the plane. It’s a great spot to grab an evening drink.

Go to bed somewhat early because you should be at Manuel Antonio National Park when it opens at 8am.

We suggest being there when it opens because it gets really crowded as the day goes on.

Manuel Antonio National Park / Playa Espadilla

Time to check out Manuel Antonio National Park!

We have a complete guide to Manuel Antonio National Park which you should read to get a better idea of how to have a successful visit.

In the afternoon, enjoy some time on Playa Espadilla (the big beach in Manuel Antonio). If you want a quieter experience, walk to the far end of the beach. There are some cool large rocks down there and that area is almost always empty.

After exploring the beach head back to your hotel to relax a bit or check out one of the Manuel Antonio activities we have listed in our Manuel Antonio guide .

In the evening enjoy dinner at one of our recommended places.

Drive to Uvita / Slide down Uvita waterfall / Enjoy the sunset

After breakfast, we suggest relaxing at the beach for a bit before it is time to head out to Uvita. As with Manuel Antonio, it will only take you about 1.5 hours to get to Uvita. If you arrive before check-in time we suggest asking at your hotel if you can leave your stuff somewhere safe so that it is not left in your car.

Once you arrive in Uvita and check into your hotel it is time to arrange your kayak tour for tomorrow. Head towards the beach and stop at Uvita 360 . They do a mangrove kayaking tour at low tide for $55 per person for a three-hour tour. I know, it is not cheap, but the tour includes informative guides, fruits, and water. Plus, how cool is it that you can kayak through mangroves and see tons of wildlife? Anyway, it is best to book your tour the day before. They only do the mangrove tour at high tide when the water level is higher.

After stopping at Uvita 360 it’s time to grab some lunch and check out the coolest waterfall experience you will ever have. You can check out our Uvita guide for food suggestions, but we personally recommend Los Laurales . The food is amazing and the owners are the sweetest. Plus, it is a two-minute drive from the waterfall you are going to.

After lunch at Los Laurales drive a bit further along the street and you will see cars parked on the right side of the road. Pull your car off (make sure you leave nothing of value in your car because there is nobody watching them) and go to the little wooden stand. For about $2 you can purchase entry to the waterfall. If you need directions to get here just type in “Uvita waterfall” into your GPS and it will come up.

The path to the waterfall is fairly easy. It will only take you about five minutes to get there. When you arrive you will see a waterfall with people sliding down it. It’s so cool!

I suggest you try it, especially if you are traveling during rainy season when there is more water. I didn’t do it because I was not feeling the best that day, but Thomas slid down the Uvita waterfall twice. If you try it, let us know how it was.

If you want to swim in a more quiet spot you can walk back towards the way you came and hop in one of the Uvita waterfall pools there.

There is supposedly another waterfall you can drive to not too far from there through a bamboo forest, but we could not find it. If you go to Los Laurales for lunch you should ask them about it. I bet they can direct you where to go. We found the bamboo forest but got a bit lost after that.

If you find it, we’d love if you let it know where it is and how your experience was so we can pass that info on to other travelers.

After your waterfall adventure, we suggest relaxing at the beach and watching the sunset. We like to buy a few beers at one of the grocery stores (there is one right in the center of town) and having a sunset drink on the beach.

In the evening you can grab dinner at one of our suggested places

Go mangrove kayaking / Visit Marino Ballena National Park

Hopefully, you were able to figure out a good time to go mangrove kayaking with Uvita 360 . This day works out perfectly because you can only go kayaking at high tide and you can only see the whales tale at low tide.

To get to the Marino Ballena National Park you can park at the parking lot next to Uvita 360 and walk down the beach to the park entrance. After paying admission you can walk on to the beach and walk out on to the whales tail.

In case you are wondering what I’m even talking about, on the beach in Uvita (Marino Ballena National Park) you can walk out to a point during low tide that looks like the tail of a whale. If you have a drone, you can get an amazingly cool picture from above the whale’s tail. Just make sure to get back from the whale’s tale before the tide comes in and you get stranded.

The beach in Uvita is actually one of our favorite Costa Rica beaches because we love how long it is and hoe you can look beyond it and see pure Costa Rica jungle.

After your adventures kayaking and exploring the whales tail we suggest relaxing. You can grab dinner at one of our suggested places . Just keep in mind, tomorrow’s hike will be intense so we suggest not going too crazy tonight.

Hike to Nauyaca waterfall / relax on the beach

After breakfast, it’s time to head to Nauyaca waterfall in nearby Dominical. We have a full guide to visiting the waterfall here .

After visiting Nauyaca we suggest checking out Dominical. You drive by the entrance to the downtown area when heading back to Uvita, so it is definitely worth stopping.

We suggest getting lunch at one of our suggested places in our Dominical guide . In all honesty, the food in Dominical is so good that we have a hard time picking one place for you to go.

After lunch, we suggest walking down to the Dominical beach and checking out the artists selling stuff. Usually, the entire road next to the beach is filled with artists. You can buy anything from clothes to jewelry, to artwork. Just be warned, it is difficult to leave without buying something.

You can then spend some time enjoying Dominical beach before heading back to Uvita.

You will likely be really tired from this day, so we suggest just chilling tonight. If you want a nice dinner Sabor Espanol has great Spanish food.

Drive back to Airport Area / See crocodiles

Don’t rush too much to leave Uvita. The drive back will only take you about four hours depending on traffic.

About thirty minutes after passing Jaco you will cross a bridge with a bunch of people standing on it. Pull your carr off on the side of the road and walk on to the bridge. Look below and you will see tons of big crocodiles relaxing in the sun. Just keep an eye on your car because all of your belongings will be left inside.

After checking out the crocodiles, continue to the airport area. We have a full guide to this area here so you can get a better idea of where to stay and good restaurants to eat at in the area.

Our Advice for This Itinerary

– If you plan on booking a hotel, we’d appreciate it if you booked by clicking this link to booking.com . It doesn’t cost you anything but we get a percentage of their profits which allows us to keep making these Costa Rica trip plans available to you for free.

– Costa Rica is a restaurant paradise. You can find our favorite places to eat for every budget in our destination guide .

– If you would like some alternative activity ideas, check out our destinations guides for the places you are visiting.

– This itinerary does involve a lot of driving, but we tried to space it enough that it becomes doable.

– Check out our Must Know page for more tips for preparing for your travel including packing lists, gear suggestions, using your cell phone here etc.

– We made this one week Costa Rica itinerary with the idea that you would be flying into San Jose instead of Liberia. For this itinerary, San Jose is a much better airport to fly in to. Driving from Liberia down to Manuel Antonio is just too much driving.

– Keep in mind that Manuel Antonio National Park is closed on Tuesdays. If it would line up that you would be visiting the park on Tuesday you could always opt to do this itinerary in reverse.

– Please take into consideration that we created this guide from our personal experience. We try to always give you the best and most updated info possible, but that is not always possible.

For example, even in writing this I discovered three restaurants I planned on including here are now closed.

Great service.

Luis was our driver from the airport in San Jose to our house rental in Manuel Antonio 1.5 hours), then again from the house to Guanacaste (about 6 hours). Both times he provided amazing customer service, safe and comfortable travel, and answered my many questions about the culture in Costa Rica! When we return we will absolutely use Pacifico Travel and will hopefully get Luis again!

Our flight from Quepos to San Jose was cancelled due to high winds which meant we would have missed our evening flight to Toronto. Ricardo took it upon himself to provide a vehicle and a driver to get us to San Jose in time by road which meant changing arrangements that he had already made. Roberto was the driver and he was able to find a way to get us to San Jose in time by an alternate route when the main route was blocked with a 30 km back-up due to a bad accident. It was very impressive teamwork delivered with a friendly smile. Thank you both to Ricardo and Roberto and to Pacifico Travel. I will certainly recommend them to anyone who asks. Pura Vida

Best service ever.

Our driver was the best. He was there waiting for us when we exited the airport and stopped at the store for us so we could get drinks. We had a large group and it was great to not have to worry about a thing. And once we arrived at our vacation rental we started touring the house and before we knew it Ronald had already carried our bags into the house. Great service!

Truly the best.

I’ve been using Pacifico Travel for many years and they have always had Top Notch service. But last night was over the top. I had a last minute client make a reservation and at Midnight I texted him and he arranged for one of his drivers to be there to pick up my last minute reservation for a 6:40am pickup in San Jose airport. For any of you that help arrange transportation for your guests or if you are on your own and need a reliable company that you can trust call Pacifico Travel! They are awesome

Rancho Pacifico map

Several options are available to get to Rancho Pacifico. Please contact us for additional information.

The drive from the San Jose Airport to Rancho Pacifico is 3 to 3.5 hours on a scenic paved coastal road in good condition. A 4×4 is a must because the last 1.5 miles consist of a steep gravel road. Without four-wheel drive, you will not be able to drive up the road. We also recommend that you let us reserve your rental car for you so you can be sure you have the right car at the best rates.

We suggest using Waze or Google Maps to find your way to us. You can simply type in Rancho Pacifico, and it will take you right to our door.

Contact us for printed driving directions or rental car reservations.

Luggage weight is limited to 30 pounds per person not including a carry-on. Extra charges apply above 30 pounds. In order to take the regional flight, you will need to plan a 2-hour window from the time of arrival in San Jose. After exiting customs and the main terminal, the regional terminal is a short walk. You have to be at the regional terminal at least 45 minutes before the flight. For more information visit: www.flysansa.com or www.costaricagreenair.com . From the Quepos/Manuel Antonio regional airport, we can arrange private ground transportation to Rancho Pacifico for $120 each way for up to 4 guests.

Playa Avellana y Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas

Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio

Pacifico is a private, gated resort community with amenities that make you never want to leave. Choose an apartment in one of 17 buildings that are Mediterranean style and designed for privacy and spacious living. Units offer 2 to 4 bedrooms with as many baths, and every apartment has tile floors, high ceilings, and high-end finishes. Each unit is pre-wired for cable, phone, and Internet access. But you might be looking out the windows most of all. Every building is surrounded by mature plants that block your view of neighbors yet allow perfect views of the four expansive pools.

These pools – all four of them - are the premiere amenity at Pacifico. They wind throughout the property, allowing for intimate conversations or a day of solitude floating along the turquoise water. Rest a moment in one of several hidden areas shrouded by flowering plants, or soothe your muscles in a large, bubbling Jacuzzi. If you love water fountains, one pool features a flagstone entrance and shooting water display, perfect for kids to enjoy. Surrounding each pool are decks with comfy lounge chairs. Take a nap under the umbrellas after a day of fun, sun, and crisp air.

But pools aren’t all Pacifico has to offer. Right before the guarded entrance gates you’ll find the Village Shops , a 25,600 square foot area of cafes, shops, offices, restaurants, and a US-style supermarket. Or board the shuttle to the private Beach Club . The Beach Club Restaurant and Bar seats 60 guests in cool, air-conditioned comfort while offering beautiful coastal-designed interiors. If you like, your drinks and food can be delivered pool-side or on the lawn that overlooks the beach, so you never have to leave your preferred place of comfort.

As if this all wasn’t enough, Pacifico will soon add Pickleball and lighted tennis courts in a new recreational area.

There’s a reason Costa Rica is at the top of so many people’s bucket lists. Full of lush rainforests, insane waterfalls, and huge mountains it’s not hard to fall in love with its natural beauty. Whether you want to kick back and relax at a scenic all-inclusive resort, find your zen through holistic practices, or chase some adrenaline with an epic excursion, Costa Rica has got it  all!

This is truly a destination that satisfies both vacationers  and  travelers. I consider myself a little bit of both so it was no surprise that I loved this destination so much.

Today I’m sharing all the details of our nine-day trip including transportation recommendations, 5-star resorts, and a full packing list. Enjoy!

WHERE TO STAY

We stayed at three different five-star resorts in two different areas. We started our trip by flying into Liberia and riding 2.5 hours to Punta Islita. After three nights we drove 6 hours to Osa where we spent five nights in the middle of the rainforest, 2,000 feet in the air. From Osa, we drove 3.5 hours to the San Jose airport where we flew back to the United States.

HOTEL PUNTA ISLITA

Hotel Punta Islita is nestled within the tropical rainforest with stunning views of Guanacaste’s black sand beaches. This Marriott property looked straight out of a movie with its black sand beaches, insane wildlife, and incredible landscaping.

Book your stay here.

The Resort

The main area of Hotel Punta Islita was  paradise . From a stunning infinity pool with a swim-up bar to beautiful views of Punta Islita beach, the design was truly a work of art.

The hotel is spread over several miles with a shuttle that takes you the short five-minute drive to the beach club/ocean. I  loved  this hotel because they had tons of on-site activities available . From free activities like mixology classes, cooking classes, and painting to optional add-ons like bird watching, ATVing, horseback riding, surf lessons, and more.

There were tons to do here without truly “leaving the resort ” which made things super easy. While this would make a romantic honeymoon destination, it was also very kid-friendly with lots of families!

Unlike a typical hotel, Punta Islita’s rooms are all separate from one another , kind of like tiny houses! It made for an incredibly relaxing experience being further away from other gifts, tucked away into your own private oasis.

I stayed in a Guest Room Mountain View (Double Occupancy) which had two double beds, a bathroom, and a small sink/getting ready area. We also had a beautiful yard with a hammock that overlooked the mountains.

This is one of their smaller rooms, however, Hotel Punta Islita has all kinds of different options, some with pools, ocean views, and three bedrooms that you can browse here.

This hotel has different packages that you can buy depending on how often you want to eat at the resort. Honestly, there are only a few restaurants within a 30-minute radius, so unless you have a rental car, plan to eat all of your meals on-site.

The food here was  so  incredible that we didn’t even want to eat elsewhere . Alma Restaurant was where we ate breakfast and dinner. They had amazing Costa Rican options and fun spins on traditional favorites. Costa Rican cuisine is incredibly fresh with tons of rice, rice and beans, and seafood.  Many ingredients were grown on site and it showed!

Aurura Beach Club is located near the beach and is available for a swim-up bar and lunch. They have amazing burgers, tacos, salads and more. Everything here has a unique blend of ingredients that may sound “different” but will give your palette an explosion of flavor. Trust me!

Nunka Spa was rated one of the top wellness spas in all of Costa Rica. I spent a morning here getting an incredible treatment + massage, allowing me to connect with nature and really ~zen out~ the pura vida way!

I did the 30-minute Nicoya bath full of local herbs, flowers goat milk, and honey to moisturize and replenish the skin. Followed by a 30-minute Shirodhara scalp/upper body hot oil massage. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced and   so  centering.

RANCHO PACIFICO

Rancho Pacifico is a stunning boutique resort nestled in the lush mountains of Costa Rica’s Uvita region. This resort has just seven villas so it has a private, exclusive feel to it .

It’s important to note this property is 2,000 feet above sea level, so you are literally at the highest point of the mountain which means you’ve got an entirely different climate. It’s the  middle  of the rainforest so it’s bound to rain at least once a day . The weather up here can be completely different than down by the beach. I have to admit, rain has never been so vibey. It was such a cool experience.

Here’s a peek at the stunning infinity pool/hot tub. You had incredible views of Uvita Beach and all of the insane surrounding wildlife.

This resort offered tons of excursions as well , however , they were much pricier & transportation in general to get up and down the mountain starts at $60 round trip— you need 4X4 wheel drive for the 20-minute, steep ride up! They do however offer a free transfer to the beach daily from 10:30 am-1:30 pm which we took advantage of!

Additionally, they had a beautiful yoga platform, a gym, a spa, and several local hikes and waterfalls surrounding the property.

Rancho Pacifico doesn’t have traditional hotel rooms , they have villas! It’s like living in your own mini-house. We stayed in their 2 Bedroom Luxury Villa and it was absolutely incredible.

The living room had floor-to-ceiling screens and a gigantic porch overlooking the rainforest. You really have to embrace the wildlife!

There were two bedrooms off of the kitchen which were both screened in and had airconditioning . Stunning with large, spacious bathrooms to accompany it. There are no keys here , just yourself immersed in nature. It’s the perfect place to center yourself.

The dining experience here was unbelievable. This resort is different than your typical all-inclusive with a set menu for breakfast and lunch. The freshest most unique combinations that were mouth-watering. The Costa Rican breakfast was my personal favorite!

The dinner menu is prepared by a single chef that changes nightly. They serve two appetizers, one main course (choose between two options), and one dessert. From fresh fish to creamy pasta to tender steak the variety was unreal! We had some of the best food I’ve ever had while traveling. This was five-star fine dining, unlike any all-inclusive food you may have in mind!

Of course, Costa Rica is known for its wellness so I had to check out the spa. I was treated to a 60-minute aromatherapy massage that featured a mix of different essential oils. Their spa has open walls so you get to look out across the lush mountains and really take in all the sounds of the jungle.

They have tons of different services you can  browse here — relax and unwind while you’re here!

VISTA CELESTIAL

Vista Celestial is the sister property of Rancho Pacifico and while Racho has a more masculine, industrial feel Vista Celestial is girly and all things bright and airy. You’re a little lower in the mountains so the sky is generally a little clearer with the same stunning ocean views.

The pool here is incredible with beautiful views of the ocean and tons of room to lounge. This is another boutique property with just five villas so you get a relaxing, private experience. Similar to the last hotel there are two yoga platforms, a gym, and the same access to trails and waterfalls. The staff were so kind and welcoming, really taking the time to educate us on their culture! We felt at home instantly.

The villas here were  insane.  A clean open floorplan with a large king bed facing the ocean. With a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door giving way to your own private patio + hot tub this was the kind of room you never wanted to leave.

A true slice of paradise. Even the bathroom was stunning with its grand bathtub and mountain views. This was without a doubt one of my favorite hotel rooms I’ve ever stayed in. I wish I had more nights to bask in its beauty!

The dining situation here was very similar to Rancho Pacifico with amazing fresh mixed juices and mouthwatering lunch options. I had shrimp fried rice, burgers, ceviches and more. You’ve got to try a little bit of everything while you’re here! They also offer free room service so if you want to cozy up in bed, they will deliver right to you!

Dinner begins at 6:30 nightly and has a rotating, handpicked menu with one appetizer, main course, and dessert per person. Highly suggest coming hungry because you will leave feeling very full!

THINGS TO DO

There’s  so  much to do in Costa Rica—you could truly spend weeks exploring the island and still not put a dent in all of the National Parks, waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches, and towns. The country is big and spread out with so many areas worth exploring. We spent half of our time relaxing within our beautiful resorts and the other half exploring the beaches and partaking in excursions.

Sharing a list of everything we did here:

Beach Day At Punta Islita Beach

Our first hotel was just a short walk to Punta Islita Beach. We were on the Pacific Coast here so the waves were big and surf-abe. This beach also has black sand due to its volcanic origin! It’s strikingly beautiful in person.

The water is totally swimmable but I suggest water shoes or rubber flip-flops for the walk down as it’s really rocky before getting into the water.

ATV Excursion

One of my favorite things to do when visiting a new country is ATVing! It’s an easy, exhilarating way to cover a lot of ground and is generally very safe since it’s led by a local guide. We booked this two-hour excursion through our first hotel, Hotel Punta Islita.

Throughout the two hours, we saw a little bit of everything— the local village homes, church, and market—sites of the rainforest, tons of wildlife, and the coastline of a stunning black sand beach. We went through rivers, waterfalls, and more. Epic views and an adrenaline rush!

Zip Lining Excursion

I heard ziplining was the best excursion to do in Costa Rica, and I have to say I couldn’t agree more. I’ve done it in several different countries but the views here were by far the best. Looking around in the jungle + seeing the mountains from so high up was a feeling like no other.

We also got caught in the rain which made it even more magical. There are so many different ways to book this, we did it through Hotel Punta Islita which had six courses in the middle of the rainforest.

Osa Waterfall Hike

There are tons of different waterfalls throughout Costa Rica— both national landmarks and small hidden gems. Osa waterfall was nestled next to our second hotel, Rancho Pacifico so we did the hour-and-a-half hike. It was not a beginner’s hike (quite steep and slippery!) but the views were  so  worth it.

We would have loved to visit another one where we could jump off a rock and swim around but unfortunately, the weather just wasn’t holding up for us… next time!

Explore the Town/Market of Uvita

Our second and third hotels were a short drive from the quaint town of Uvita. This cute area had a handful of restaurants, bars, and local markets. It’s right along the beach so it’s also where you can sign up for various excursions like surfing, catamaran sailing, etc. These things usually book up a few days in advance so I suggest planning ahead !

They also have a local farmers market every Saturday and Wednesday with lots of local vendors and fresh produce worth checking out!

Uvita National Park Beach Day

You can’t come to Uvita without checking out the beach. This is the Pacific Coast so the beaches have great surfing waves and lots of whale sightings. It’s $6 to enter and is card only! Bring cash for the coconuts and street vendors right outside— they accept American dollars!

Sea Turtle Expedition

Costa Rica has the largest sea turtle population in the world and is a top destination for tourists who want to witness a sea turtle nesting/hatching.

Mother turtles get pregnant three times a year and drop 80-100 eggs which then hatch 45 days later. Depending on the time of year, you witness one-half of the cycle! We went on a night tour on the beach where we watched sea turtles come out of the ocean, make their nest, and, lay their eggs . Definitely a once in a lifetime type of activity although I have no pictures since you have to keep the flash off of these creatures!

But don’t forget this isn’t your typical Caribbean destination… Costa Rica is full of outdoorsy adventures and fun excursions. Activewear and sneakers are both must-pack items!

My favorite trips are the ones where I kick back and relax  and  do a little bit of adventuring. Costa Rica was just that! Feeling so lucky for this chance to connect with locals, find my zen, and experience a new culture. I know for a fact this won’t be my last time in Costa Rica—I can’t wait to come back and explore all that this beautiful country has to offer. Until then!

How to plan the ultimate family trip to Monteverde, Costa Rica

Megadiverse Costa Rica has long impressed adventure travellers with its lush rainforests and outstanding wildlife, but the country's Monteverde region is increasingly becoming a top destination for families, too.

Volcan Arenal dominates the landscape during sunset, as seen from the Monteverde area, Costa Rica.

Think of Costa Rica and the images that first come to mind are of untouched rainforests teeming with wildlife and dotted with waterfalls cascading into clear blue pools. It’s the first tropical country on the planet that has actively reversed deforestation and now protects a quarter of its territory — one of the largest proportions in the world. Hidden away in the Tilarán Range in the country’s northwestern interior, misty Monteverde is a canton with serious environmental credentials. Nearly half of Costa Rica’s biodiversity is found within its surrounding virgin cloud forest, which is protected by several reserves.

Monteverde’s main attraction is its wildlife, ranging from the red-eyed tree frog to the country’s huge variety of colourful birds. Travellers of all ages will be equally awed by treetop bridges and nighttime walks, which make for a magical introduction to the region’s unique ecosystem, the cloud forest. Here’s how to plan an adventure-fuelled family trip.

A red-eyed tree frog on an orange leaf in the cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the nature reserve that put the area on the map. Arrange your ticket in advance — as only 250 visitors per day can explore the reserve’s paths, which weave between evergreen trees slung with bromeliads and strangler figs. The trails are quieter, however, at the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve further north. Keep your eyes peeled for white-faced capuchin monkeys perched up in the canopy and groups of coatis (raccoon-like animals also known as coatimundis) trundling along the paths. What's more, on clear days, you can spot the huge conical Arenal Volcano looming in the distance.

Next, experience the rainforest from a perspective normally reserved for birds and monkeys at the 850-acre Selvatura Adventure Park . Eight hanging bridges are suspended within the forest’s mist-veiled canopy and form part of a 1.9-mile trail that is suitable for all ages. Families can join a guided tour of the forest for the chance to learn more about it from a biological and ornithological perspective. Dusk falls early, so even the youngest travellers will be awake for a guided night walk through the Children's Eternal Rainforest reserve. The family-friendly trails turn into a buzzing metropolis of creatures you’re unlikely to see in the day — if you’re lucky, you might spot golden-orb spiders, pit vipers and even slumbering toucans.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve offers visitors 15sq-miles of cloud forest to explore.

Where to eat

For a relaxed brunch, stop for a coffee, freshly made pancakes or a typical Central American dish of huevos rancheros (eggs with chillies, tomatoes and peppers in burritos) at the excellent Stella’s Cafe , a low-key cafe surrounded by greenery and darting hummingbirds. If you need a sweet treat after an active day, book a tour at Don Juan , a nearby coffee and chocolate farm. You’ll learn about the coffee and cocoa bean growing and harvesting processes, before watching the real magic happen as cacao is turned into chocolate. A tasting is included, of course. A late lunch or early dinner is best enjoyed on the terrace of the hillside Restaurante El Sapo , where the choice ranges from salads to pastas, all featuring locally sourced ingredients. Its ‘Mini Explorers Menu’ is designed for smaller appetites and is a hit with youngsters — crowd-pleasing options include burgers and mac and cheese.

What to see

More than 400 species of birds inhabit the Monteverde region, but its most prized resident can be elusive. Rise early for a dawn walk with a naturalist guide in the Curi-Cancha Reserve to search for the resplendent quetzal. With an iridescent plumage of shimmering green and red, half-metre-long tails and a feathery mohawk, the quetzal's are simple to identify, but surprisingly challenging to find. Fortunately, Monteverde ranks as one of the easiest places to spot these remarkable birds. If you visit during mating season (February through July), you can increase your chances of seeing them.

Smaller critters are well-represented in Monteverde, too. On the edge of the area’s main town, Santa Elena, the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens are best visited on a sunny day — encounter a riot of colour as the huge iridescent blue morpho butterfly and 29 other species flit and flutter around the enclosures. Next, spend an hour or two in the Ranario Monteverde Frog Pond , with its glass terrariums housing numerous frog species, including the poison dart and the boldly colourful red-eyed tree frog. A little further south, the Bat Jungle is similarly enthralling. Bats comprise over half of the region’s mammal species — catch them feeding and even listen in on their conversations using the sanctuary’s ultrasonic microphone.

Where to stay

Nothing beats waking up to a spectacular dawn chorus, which can be heard at the boutique Koora Hotel . This 24-bedroom hotel has suites with plunge pools, bungalows and spacious family rooms nestled into the cloud forest. Enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire, relax with a board game or watch the wildlife — such as monkeys, coatis and birds — that regularly visit. The hotel also offers a family-friendly tour planning service to take the hassle out of plotting your adventures in Monteverde. The adjoining Aguti Wildlife Reserve has 2.5 miles of private hiking trails and is home to grand old trees and a host of interesting characters — including its namesake rodent and cousin of the guinea pig, the agouti. Head into the quiet reserve on a self-guided tour or enlist the expertise of a tour guide to learn more about the flora and fauna.

10 things to consider before buying a condo in costa rica, table of contents.

  • August 21, 2024
  • in Buying in Costa Rica , Real Estate

Owning property in Costa Rica offers a lifestyle infused with natural beauty and tranquility, attracting many investors and foreign buyers worldwide. Nonetheless, certain factors must be carefully considered when purchasing in this paradise in Central America.

This article offers a comprehensive guide on the 10 essential things to consider before buying a condo in Costa Rica. Its goal is to equip potential buyers with the knowledge and data necessary to make informed decisions throughout the purchasing process. With this guide, buyers can confidently navigate the complexities of ownership in Costa Rica, ensuring their investment meets or exceeds their expectations in this tropical paradise.

The image shows a cozy outdoor dining area on a balcony with a beautiful view of the ocean and distant mountains. The balcony is covered, with an arched opening framing the scenic landscape. In the foreground, there is a small wooden table with a simple black base, set for two with wicker chairs. On the table are two glasses of bright yellow juice and a selection of fresh fruit.

In Costa Rica, the location of a condo has a big impact on property prices, lifestyle advantages, and accessibility, which is why it is key to analyze the following criteria.

Popular Areas

San Jose, Costa Rica’s vibrant capital, offers a blend of modern amenities and cultural richness, attracting both locals and foreigners with its dynamic lifestyle, top-notch healthcare, and diverse shopping and dining options.

On the other hand, Tamarindo is a sought-after beach town renowned for its stunning coastline, surf spots, and relaxed ambiance, ideal for those seeking a tropical retreat. Manuel Antonio , with its renowned national park and lush rainforests, provides a unique combination of luxury and natural beauty, perfect for those aiming for a dream home in a tranquil setting.

Amenities or Proximity to Amenities

Certain amenities and/or proximity to amenities are crucial for convenience and overall quality of life when buying property in Costa Rica. A beach condo offers easy access to leisure activities and breathtaking vistas, which can improve your lifestyle. Nearby retail malls, tennis courts, a golf course, air conditioning, and other amenities ensure you have enough amusement, entertainment, and comfort, depending on your personal preferences.

To maintain well-being and peace of mind, access to high-quality healthcare is also essential, particularly for families and retirees. For foreign families with children, access to excellent local schools is essential, as it reduces commuting time and ensures a high-quality education for the youngsters. Your overall quality of life and the value of your property might be greatly affected by how these factors are evaluated.

Safety and Security

For many expats, security and safety are top priorities when buying real estate in Costa Rica. Researching safety measures and crime statistics in potential neighborhoods is crucial. Gated communities and secure buildings provide additional peace of mind while engaging with local expat communities and seeking their recommendations, offering valuable insights into different areas’ safety.

Additionally, accessibility to emergency services, such as hospitals and police stations, is an important consideration. Ensuring the region you choose has a low crime rate and a strong security system will contribute to a safe and comfortable living environment.

Legal Requirements

The image shows a close-up of a person signing a document on a wooden table. The person is using a gold and silver pen to sign their name on a piece of paper that appears to be a legal document, as it contains text in a formal layout. The hands are positioned over the document, with one hand holding the paper steady and the other writing.

Understanding the legal requirements when buying property in Costa Rica is fundamental to ensuring a smooth and secure transaction. Costa Rica is relatively welcoming to foreign investors , except for properties in maritime zones, which face certain restrictions. It is crucial to verify the property’s title and deed to avoid future legal issues.

Collaborating with a reputable real estate attorney and a notary public can help you navigate legal complexities and ensure all documentation is correct, providing peace of mind and safeguarding your investment.

Budget and Costs

The image shows a close-up of a red "FOR SALE" sign in the foreground, with white text prominently displayed. In the background, slightly out of focus, two people are shaking hands with a real estate agent, indicating a property deal or agreement.

Grasping market prices in different areas is essential to align your investment expectations with reality when budgeting for a condo purchase in Costa Rica. The cost of condominiums in well-known neighborhoods like Santa Ana, Tamarindo, and Manuel Antonio varies greatly depending on the locale and amenities.

To prevent unpleasant surprises, you should prepare for other expenses like property taxes, homeowners’ association (HOA) dues, and closing charges in addition to the purchase price. Exploring financing options for foreigners is also important, as different terms from local and international lenders can affect your investment strategy and purchasing power.

Homeowner Association (HOA)

In a subdivision, planned community, or condominium, a Homeowners’ Association (HOA) sets and enforces rules for its residents. Before buying property in Costa Rica, you should understand the HOA fees, which cover security, maintenance in common areas, landscaping, and sometimes utilities. These levies are collected monthly or annually and can significantly increase condo ownership costs.

HOA rules govern what homeowners can and cannot do with their properties and help keep the community clean. HOA administration must be evaluated because well-managed communities resolve issues quickly, enforce rules fairly, and meet member needs. Before buying a condo in Costa Rica, consider the HOA because it will affect your living situation, finances, and investment value.

Condition of the Property

The image shows a beautiful, well-maintained residential property surrounded by lush greenery. The property features a modern, white exterior with black accents, including double doors and wall-mounted lantern-style lights.

A thorough property inspection is essential to determine the status of a condominium in Costa Rica. An inspection can uncover potential issues such as structural damage, plumbing problems, or electrical faults. Estimating maintenance needs and costs—both immediate and long-term—can help you avoid unexpected expenses and ensure the property remains in good shape.

Furthermore, the inspection may indicate the necessity for modifications, enabling potential buyers to account for these expenses. This understanding will aid in decision-making and budgeting for your real estate investment.

Rental potential.

The image shows a stylish and comfortable living room with modern decor. The room features two teal-colored sofas adorned with decorative pillows, one with a red pillow and the other with a patterned blue and white pillow. In front of the sofas is a glass coffee table with a metal frame and a lower shelf displaying a small decorative item. The back wall is painted in a soothing blue color and is decorated with three floating wooden shelves displaying various items, including a clock, books, and small plants.

Purchasing a condo in Costa Rica requires careful consideration of the rental possibilities, particularly in tourist-friendly regions. The rental industry is a strong market in Costa Rica, with high demand for properties in popular tourist destinations such as the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Factors like location, seasonality, and amenities influence occupancy rates and rental income. Comprehending the local laws governing both short- and long-term rentals is essential since they may affect your capacity to lease the house. Understanding these rules guarantees adherence and optimizes the sustainability and profitability of the rental property.

Community and Lifestyle

To ensure your lifestyle and preferences match, consider the community’s atmosphere before buying a condo in Costa Rica. You must feel comfortable and part of your new community. With social ties, shared experiences, and helpful guidance, an expat community and support system can ease adjustment.

Cultural differences must be considered during adjustment. Understanding and respecting local customs may improve your integration and make life more enjoyable. Complete a thorough evaluation to ensure your new Costa Rican home meets your lifestyle needs and makes you happy.

Accessibility

The image shows a bright and spacious living and dining area with a warm and inviting ambiance. The living room features a beige sofa adorned with colorful decorative pillows, one of which has a floral pattern and another with an inspirational quote. In front of the sofa, there are two vibrant orange armchairs that add a pop of color to the space. A wooden coffee table with a modern design sits on a round area rug with an intricate pattern.

A condo’s accessibility is a major consideration. Since it impacts everyday commutes and overall travel convenience, it is crucial to assess the accessibility and practicality of transportation options—including their distance from major thoroughfares, airports, and public transportation.

To guarantee a comfortable living environment, the standard of the local infrastructure—such as well-kept roads, dependable internet access, and effective utility systems—should certainly be evaluated. Natural disaster risks, like earthquakes or flooding, should also be taken into account because they affect the safety of the property as well as possible future insurance and mitigation costs.

Environmental Factors

Understanding the local climate is essential when purchasing a condominium, as it affects comfort levels and maintenance requirements. Examining the condo complex’s commitment to sustainability—which includes features like eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems—is a good idea because it can give you insight into how it will affect the environment and future operating costs.

Furthermore, being close to open spaces like parks or protected areas enhances living conditions and may provide environmental safeguards that preserve the area’s natural beauty and ecological integrity.

Upcoming Development

Before purchasing a condo in Costa Rica, it is important to consider upcoming development in the area of your choice. Being aware of any planned real estate projects, such as new commercial buildings or residential complexes, can significantly affect property value and living conditions.

Additionally, understanding current market trends and future growth potential can provide insight into the long-term viability of the investment. It is advisable to hire a real estate agent or broker who can help you evaluate the potential resale value of a property in light of these factors.

In conclusion, buying a condo in Costa Rica requires careful consideration of several key elements for a profitable investment. Understanding the local climate, evaluating upcoming development, accessibility, and environmental impact all affect your decision. Take into account location, amenities, safety, legal requirements, budget, and resale value to make a decision that fits your lifestyle and investment goals.

This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the complexities of condo ownership in Costa Rica’s tropical paradise, find a property that meets your needs, and improves your life.
