How to Reach

Manipur’s only airport is located in Imphal , the capital of the state. Located about 8 km away from the city centre, the Imphal Tulihal Airport operates regular domestic flights to various cities across the country. Both public and private transportation are easily available at the airport and everywhere else in Imphal to take you to other parts of Manipur.

Since there is no direct railway connectivity to Manipur, tourists who prefer to travel via railways can do so by catching a train to either Dimapur or Guwahati . Dimapur Railway Station is situated about 200 km away from Imphal, whereas Guwahati Railway Station is about 500 km away. There are buses and taxis available from either railway station to Imphal and other regions in Manipur.

Travellers can choose to get onto a bus, hire a private taxi or even drive themselves to Imphal from neighbouring towns and cities. There are a number of economical private bus options available from the towns Dimapur, Kohima , Agartala , Aizwal, Itanagar and Shillong . Daily buses from Dimapur and Guwahati ply NH 2 and NH 27, 29 and 2 respectively to take tourists back and forth to Imphal.

Winter (October - March):

The best time to visit Manipur, winters here remain pleasantly cool during the afternoons with chilly cold weather during the nights. January is the coldest time of the year, and the temperature can even reach zero degrees during this month. Manipuris are known for most of their produce being organic, with plenty of fish and rice included in their regular consumption as well. There is nothing better than enjoying a good thali filled with all of Manipur’s regional dishes, which can be found anywhere in the state. One of the best local dishes that should be tried on your trip to Manipur is Nga Thonga – a classic fish curry; pair it up with Alu kangmet, a side dish made with potatoes and you end up with a hearty meal. Chamthong is a famous vegetable stew, also known as Kangshoi, which is the perfect alternative for vegetarians. Eromba is another favourite among locals that is made with boiled vegetables and a type of fermented fish. Arrive  Imphal  Check In Hotel. Visit   Kangla Fort, Khwairamband Keithel or Ima Market (Women Local Market)  and Govindaji Temple .   SHRI SHRI GOVINDAJEE TEMPLE  – is an elegant  Vaishnavite shrine  located in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur. It stands adjacent to the palace of the former rulers of the state. The temple was built in the early  18th century by Rajarishi Bhagyachandra.  It has a beautiful image of  Lord Vishnu , which is flanked by the idols of  Lord Balram and Lord Krishna . Shri Govindajee Temple is simple in its architecture. It has two golden domes, a paved courtyard and a large raised congregation hall  O/N hotel at Imphal.

After B/fast Excursion to  Loktak Lake, Sendra Island  48kms. Visit  1) KEIBUL LAMJAO NATIONAL PARK (one and only floating national park in the world where the endangered dancing deer – Sangai is found) ,  2) LOKATK LAKE(largest fresh water lake in north east), 3)INA MEMORIAL(Indian tri color flag was first hoisted here by INA at Moirang) 4) Sendra Park and view point . O/N Hotel at Loktak Lake.

Transfer to  Moreh village  by car.  Moreh is the border of India and Myanmar . . It is the border town of Manipur on the national highway Number 39, surrounded by hills, mountains & rivers which is 110 kilometres from Imphal. It is located on the Indo – Myanmar Road, a commercial town attracting a large numbers of people from neighbouring places.

It is only 5 kilometres away from  Tamu , its Myanmar counterpart and is especially the best place for shopping & business. The recent opening of the Border trade turned Moreh into an important commercial hub in North – East. Just on the other side of the border, at  Namphanglong , there is a big Myanmar’s market complex where all kinds of  Thai and Chinese consumer goods  are available at a reasonable low price. You can have a small visit to  Tamu (Myanmar part by submitting your i card) . Night stay at Imphal.

After breakfast transfer to  Ukhrul  ( 6 to 7 hrs journey).  A picturesque hill town of Manipur – lies about 84 km kilometers to the North East of Imphal. The place is inhabited by  Tangkhul Tribes.  The life and art of Tangkhuls are attractive and captivating. Their different costumes and wears, utensils, architecture, monumental erections and memorial set-up depict their dexterity in art, which also speak of  their sense of beauty and finesse  . Night stay at Ukhrul.

Early morning have a small hike to the  Sirui Lily hills  . If you can climb 1.5 kms you will enjoy the savana and exotic views. Later after lunch you can proceed to Imphal ( 3 hrs drive).

• Shree Govindajee Temple

Located adjacent to the palaces of the erstwhile rulers of the then kingdom, it is a famous temple here. Dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha , the temple is located in Imphal and was built in the 18th century. Located near the temple is the palace with historic significance. During celebration of Holi, youngsters give dance performance inside the temple complex.

• Loktak Lake

Located near Imphal city, this lake is the largest freshwater lakes in East India . It is a home to a variety of flora and fauna. Considering its socio-economic importance, the lake was given the title 'the wetland of international importance' by the Ramsar Convention in the year 1990. Peppered with floating Phundies, the lake is also called the 'Floating lake'.

• Keibul Lamjao National Park

Located near the Loktak lake , this Park is the place where you can see the endangered Manipur brow-antlered deer(Cervus eldi eldi) and python(Python molurus molu). A variety of other wildlife species are also found here such as hog deer, boar, wild cats, and panthers. During the winter season some migratory birds can also be witnessed in this park.

• Manipur State Museum

It is a treasure trove displaying a variety of art and crafts of Manipur . It is one of the finest museums of Northeast India which was established in the year 1969. Giving an insight in to the glorious history of Manipur, the artifacts inside the museum are wonderful. There are several galleries inside the museum and each gallery is dedicated to a particular theme. Some of the artifacts displayed inside the museum are Manipuri costumes, war implements, historical documents and relics, sculptures of the local forest deities, the motif of the Phakangba (the man who could turn himself into a dragon) and portraits of the erstwhile rulers.

• War Cemeteries

It is the place with the graves of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country in the World War II . The graves have stone markers and bronze plaques with the names of the soldiers.

Located at a distance of 45 km from Imphal, Moirang is a religious center with a temple dedicated to the pre-Hindu deity Thangjing. In the month of May a grand festival is celebrated here with great enthusiasm. This place also has a museum and memorial.

Drawing many a tourist, Red Hill is a hillock of historic importance . It witnessed and braved a fierce battle which was fought between the British and the Japanese army during World War II. There is a monument on this hillock built in honor of Japanese Martyrs who were killed in the war.

• Manipur Zoological Garden

Located 6 km from Imphal, this Garden is famous for being a home to Sangai, the brown-antlered deer which is a rare wildlife species.

Manipur Tour

4 nights / 5 days manipur tour itinerary.

Day 1: Arrive in Imphal

Meet your Guide, Car and day tour of Imphal City which includes the famous women’s market, the historic Kangla Fort, the Polo ground and the two WWII cemeteries. You can also visit the state museum and the RKCS art gallery for cultural and historical paintings, one of the finest art galleries in Northeast India.

In the evening we will take part in the aarti puja at the Govindajee Temple, the main Vaishnavite temple of Manipur.

Note: 1) A traditional Manipuri thali lunch can be arranged as part of this tour on request.

          2) The Kangla Fort is closed on Mondays.

Overnight at Imphal.

Day 2: The Loktak Lake Tour

This tour has as its main destination the breathtakingly beautiful Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in North East India and Manipur’s top tourist destination. We can get a bird’s eye view of the lake from the Sendra Island.  We stop en route at the Second World War battlefield of Red Hill where India Peace Memorial, the only Japanese Second World War memorial in India, is located. We will also visit the newly opened Imphal Peace Museum built at the base of Red Hill. This tour also includes a visit to the Indian National Army (INA) Memorial Complex where men of the Indian National Army (INA) hoisted the Indian tricolor flag on the Indian soil. We will have lunch at the Sendra Café on the Loktak Lake. And finally, there is the Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park and the sole home of the endangered Sangai, the brow antlered deer or the ‘dancing deer’.

Note: The Imphal Peace Museum and the INA Museum are closed on Mondays.

Day 3: The Langol Peak and Anglo-Manipur War Memorial, 1891

A full day tour along towards the Southeast of Imphal along the historic Moreh Road. You will visit the Anglo War Memorial of 1891 and the breathtakingly beautiful Langol Peak garden situated at a hilltop village inhabited by the local tribe. On this trip you will be able to listen to the stories of the heroic actions of the men of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauj since Langol peak area was the battlefield of the INA and the Japanese forces against the Allied force in the battle of Imphal. The nearby Pallel airfield was attacked by the INA and destroyed some British aircrafts during the battle.

Drive back to Imphal. Overnight at Imphal.

Day 4: Imphal – Out

Morning after breakfast, we shall drive to Airport to connect your flight for your onward journey!

A small valley tucked away in the northeast state of Manipur takes the tourists to a destination that offers a pleasant view of the scenic beauty all around along with the relics of an old, historical palace, well-planned temples and ceremonial houses amidst the tall pine and jackfruit trees. Also, visiting the Manipur Zoological Gardens, you would get a glimpse of one of the rarest species of deer in the world i.e., the graceful Brow-Antlered Thamin deer. Other than this, the city has a variety of orchids which one could find it at the Khonghampat Orchidarium. Tourists are recommended to make a visit to the orchidarium between April and May when the orchids are in full bloom that would be a perfect view to make the most out your trip to Imphal. Also, a visit to the Manipur State Museum takes the tourists to the rich collection of Manipuri costumes, historical documents, relics, implements and more which is sure to give the travellers the taste of the state's complex history.

Coming to the core tradition of Imphal, it lies in the various ancient temples. The most important and visited one is the Shri Govindajee Temple which was constructed in the early 18th century. On visiting the temple, one could find how the temple is well constructed in a simple, twin-domed structure.

The magnificent temple comes alive during festivals when thousands of pilgrims are seen visiting the temple to offer prayers. Also, the festival of Holi is considered to be the best time to visit when tourists can enjoy the Thabal Chongba folk dance performed by the when boys and girls all night. One gets filled with sanctity and holiness amid the peaceful environment of the temple. Imphal isn’t going to disappoint the shopaholics as there are plenty of options that one can shop from. One of the famous markets is the Khwairamband Bazar which is considered to be different as it is run by women.

Visiting the market tourists can witness how the entire market is split into two sections on either side of the road. There are tribal women clad found in traditional and colorful attire, selling everything right from hand-woven shawls to skirts, vessels to mugs & mats, fish to lotus, oranges and orange-flavored honey and more. Tourists visiting the Khwairamband Bazaar buy any of these products as souvenirs to take back home.Built in the memory of Manipur’s martyr there is Shahid Minar which is at the Bir Tikendrajit Park. There are more such famous cemeteries of both the Indian and the British armies who died in the Second World War. Visiting the place, you would come across the stone markers and plaques which has records of the sacrifice made by the soldiers and is well maintained by the Commonwealth Grave Commissions.

Last but not the least, the city has to offer to the history buffs, a visit to the Old Palace would take them to the interesting ruins of an old fortress wall. Also, the captivating images inside the palace are bound to capture your fancy.
