The Best Charleston Tours

Charleston, South Carolina, USA in the French Quarter.

Getty Images

History and culture lovers will relish a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, for its variety of historic churches, forts and mansions that rank as Charleston's most popular attractions . Or, perhaps you're most interested in its cuisine or the sea creatures that populate its waterways. Either way, these tours – identified by U.S. News using both expert opinion and traveler sentiment – offer just what you need for a fulfilling visit to the Holy City.

Editor’s Pick: Old South Carriage Company – Historic Charleston Carriage Tour

Price: Adults from $50; kids from $40 Duration: 1 hour

U.S. News independently paid to send Lauren Mowery , a Charleston resident and travel expert, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Old South Carriage Company – Historic Charleston Carriage Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

This horse-drawn carriage ride through Charleston’s historic neighborhoods takes you out of the French Quarter and into the city’s singular world of cobblestone streets, stately homes and lush gardens. Our characterful guide, full of interesting nuggets about the city’s history, delivered facts with a levity and enthusiasm that made learning fun. For example, he pointed out a common feature on building facades: earthquake bolts. Installed after the disastrous quake of 1886, the bolts now serve both form and function. To limit traffic on narrow streets, the city of Charleston dictates routes by lottery as the carriages exit the gate. While you can’t choose the tour route, you could book four times for potentially four different experiences. On our ride, we clip-clopped past churches, along streets perfumed with blooming jasmine and finished with "Southern Charm" star Ms. Patricia’s Greek Revival mansion.

Tours run daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., departing every 15 to 30 minutes. Extreme heat and rain, however, can affect operation times, so call to confirm. The company has a generous cancellation policy, while also making it easy to switch times and dates without penalty. In fact, many guests walk up and book the next available ride, then stroll the neighborhood while they wait. Carriages fit 16 passengers with four per row. Private rows or a private tour can be booked.

Tip: If driving to your tour, avoid parking in the immediate vicinity of the stables. A known tourist spot, parking rates are inflated two to three times above areas a few short blocks away. Look for meters instead of garages and lots.

Why we love it:

  • Beyond history and architectural details, the guide pointed out a sandwich shop called Circe’s Grotto . We visited after the tour and now it’s our new favorite spot.
  • The guide stayed patient and engaged with a tired toddler on our tour. He made jokes so the mom felt welcome, and when the child’s doll dropped in the street, he found a local "hero" to retrieve it.
  • Old South Carriage Company understands guest concerns over animal welfare. The guide assured us the horses lead safe, healthy lives, proffering details on their home, a 65-acre pasture, and the extra precautions taken in the hot summer months.

Jewish Journal

Connect. inform. inspire., lowcountry leisure — southern escape steeped in history.

Roslyn Farhi

So you’ve seen “Big Fish,” “Forrest Gump” and “Driving Miss Daisy,” and now you think you know what the South is all about — old mansions, moss-draped oaks, steamy swamps. Think again.

The South is a vibrant tapestry of culture, and its Jewish communities are important threads. Atlanta, Miami and Nashville are thriving tourism destinations, but Charleston, S.C., featuring luxuriant gardens, long porches and rocking chairs filled with laughing guests sipping sweet tea, is also flush with Jewish history that dates back to the 17th century.

It’s a city founded and steeped in religious tolerance. In 1669, an elaborate charter for the Carolina colony drawn up by English philosopher John Locke granted liberty of consciousness to “Jews, heathens and dissenters.” Sephardic Jews made this Atlantic port city the largest Jewish community in North America prior to the Revolutionary War, sharing the Lowcountry streets with Catholics and Protestants from France, Scotland, Ireland and Germany.

A popular winter destination for wealthy colonial Bostonians, Charleston also became a haven for religious colonists fleeing harsh policies in Georgia from 1740 to 1741. A substantial Jewish population founded Charleston’s first synagogue a decade later, followed by the Jewish Coming Street Cemetery in 1762.

More than 6,000 Jews currently make their home in Charleston, a community that features three synagogues, a day school and a Jewish community center, as well as a Jewish studies program at a local university. For observant tourists who want to feel transported back to the 18th century, a downtown kosher bed and breakfast is located a short walk from the city’s Orthodox synagogue.

Charleston not only features America’s first museum (The Charleston Museum) and its first Anglican church, but it is also home to the first Reform congregation established in the United States. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim on Hasell Street is the oldest Jewish building in Charleston and the second oldest synagogue in the United States.

Established in 1749, the congregation completed its current Greek revival-style synagogue in 1840, after a fire devastated its original site in 1838. During construction, the synagogue became the first in America to install an organ, a change that came 17 years after congregant Isaac Harby first lead 47 Jews to petition for English-language Shabbat services and prayers that reflected contemporary American life. A weathered plaque hangs outside, listing the site on the National Register of Historic Places, and the synagogue remains the oldest in continuous use in the United States and the oldest surviving Reform synagogue in the world.

Congregation Brith Sholom Beth Israel is an Orthodox synagogue located on Rutledge Avenue in the Medical district. Founded in 1854 under the name Berith Shalome by Polish and Prussian Jews, the shul was the first Ashkenazi Orthodox congregation in the city and is the oldest of its kind in the South. The congregation’s Web site features a list of city’s kosher amenities.

Synagogue Emanu-El on Windsor Drive is Charleston’s newest kid on the block, having been founded in 1947. The Conservative congregation is the first in the state and is located on five wooded acres in the West Ashley area.

Two books are available to help you unearth the Jewish history of Charleston during your stay, “A Portion of the People: Three Hundred Years of Southern Jewish Life ” by Theodore and Dale Rosengarten (University of South Carolina, 2002) and “Explorations in Charleston’s Jewish History” by Solmon Breibart (History, 2005). But who better to bring the rich story of Charleston’s Jewish community to life than a tour guide?

Janice Kahn of Chai Y’all Tours has more than 30 years experience as a licensed tour guide. While certain elements of her Jewish heritage tour always remain the same, she customizes each tour based on the interests of the participants.

Also available is Rhetta Mendelsohn, who has been conducting tours of Charleston as a licensed guide for more than 25 years. Her tours average two to three hours and focus on Jewish history, with many stories about Jewish families in the Charleston area and its surrounding plantations.

There is no shortage of historic lodgings, like the John Rutledge House, the Wentworth Mansion or the Francis Marion Hotel. After all, who wouldn’t want to sleep in a comfortable four-poster bed, surrounded by antique furniture with an ornate fireplace and luxurious carpets?

But you don’t have to sacrifice if you keep kosher. The Broad Street Guest House is a bed and breakfast set in a three-and-a-half-story home constructed in 1884. Located in the South of Broad neighborhood, the home is a short walk from Congregation Brith Sholom Beth Israel, as well as the harbor, shops and other Charleston attractions. The Orthodox shul’s Rabbi Ari Sytner oversees kashrut for Broad Street, which serves three glatt kosher meals a day, as well as a special Friday night dinner and Saturday lunch. Rooms at the house feature kitchenettes.

“[Guests] always tell me how courteous the people of Charleston have been to them as they tour the city,” said Broad Street’s innkeeper, Hadassah Rothenberg, who added that the best season to visit is either spring or fall.

There is always enough to see and do in Charleston’s Historic district. Occupy half a day shopping on King Street, where many of the shops started by Jewish proprietors still exist today. Berlin’s for Men (and now Berlin’s for Women), Bluestein’s Men’s Wear and Read Brothers Fabrics recall a time when King Street was once called “Little Jerusalem,” an area featuring jewelry stores, dry goods establishments, groceries and delicatessens all owned by Jewish merchants.

When it comes to dining, King Street features Pita King, a kosher Mediterranean restaurant run by expat Israelis Moshe and Talia Cohen. Customers can choose to dine in or take out.

Just east of King Street is Jestine’s Kitchen at 215 Meeting St., where a friendly wait staff serves up traditional Southern cooking — fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, collards and key lime pie. The restaurant is owned by Dana Berlin (niece of Henry Berlin) and named for Jestine Matthews, who worked for the Berlin family for many years and stayed with the family for generations.

Hyman’s Seafood Company at 215 Meeting St. is a popular local restaurant, as is Aaron’s Deli, located next door at 213 Meeting St. The brothers, Hyman and Aaron continue to operate this family restaurant, which first opened its doors in 1890.

Roslyn Farhi is the author of two children’s books, “Molly’s Cupboard” and “Molly’s Century.”

We Are Charleston's Best Walking Tour Company

"The historic tour of Charleston was an enjoyable, informative experience. The guide was very knowledgeable on the area and was able to show us some of the more quirky parts of Charleston. She also made a strong effort to ensure there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions and answered all of the questions asked. I would recommend this tour!"

"Our walk started at the beautiful city hall building. Amy, our tour guide, was adorably sweet, dressed in all shades of pink and beige from her hat to her boots. She's very very knowledgeable and friendly and answered all of our questions with grace and authority. You can tell she really loves her city and loves sharing it with visitors. My husband is so convinced that he now wants to move here. Great job Amy! Thank you for an amazingly insiteful tour."

"Second walking tour of Charleston and I would say amazing. Our guide, Evans, is a born and raised Charleston guy. He knows everything, I actually took notes so I could take my husband on the walk the next day. Good stories. Only one thing is 2 hours is enough by then everyone is brain dead. I would highly recommend this tour, plus he guided several of us to a restaurant with a fabulous lunch, Poogan’s porch."

"I have been on several tours of Charleston, but Amy walked us by and through places I had never been as well as a few of the places other tours include. After finding out where your members were from and their interests, she included information in her tour that touched on those. She also provided a list of favorite places both downtown and in nearby areas. Though we saw many places, I didn’t feel like I was rushed from one place to the next."

1. go swimming at sullivan’s island beach.

chai y'all tours charleston sc

If you enjoy vast beaches with gentle waves, tidal pools, and natural beauty, all in a peaceful location, then Sullivan’s Island Beach is one of the top Charleston attractions. With powdery sugar-like sand, natural sand dunes, and wild sea grass, this pristine beach is adored by locals.

Despite its stunning natural beauty, this beach is rarely packed, making it the perfect place to relax, take a dip, or just read a book while sunbathing. For those traveling with kids, the tidal pools are a safe place for little ones to explore the ocean without you worrying about them.

No matter what age you are, a day at the beach wouldn’t be complete without ice cream, so be sure to go to Beardcat’s Sweet Shop to try their amazing ice cream, with unusual flavors like Olive Oil and Sea Salt ice cream.

For some more hearty grub, locals love Poe’s Tavern for its juicy burgers and quirky Edgar Allan Poe-themed cocktail menu. The tavern itself is a shrine to Poe, with plenty of posters and paintings adorning the walls. The bathroom is even wallpapered with book pages from Poe’s works. Be sure to arrive early in the morning to snag free parking on the street at Station 18.

2. Explore Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter

chai y'all tours charleston sc

If you’re a history buff, visiting Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter is one of the best things to do in Charleston, as they are home to the rarest collection of American seacoast artillery in the world.

To keep up with the costs of maintaining these valuable artifacts, they have created an “Adopt-a-Cannon” initiative. If you want to play a role in conserving these invaluable witnesses to American history, then feel free to give them a donation.

Take a trip to Sullivan’s Island to learn all about the 171 years of seacoast defense that happened at Fort Moultrie from 1776 to 1947. You’ll see all sorts of remnants of American history in the museum, from the history of the fort itself to the work of the enslaved Africans.

Unique Things to do in Charleston, South Carolina: Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter

While Edgar Allan Poe was the most famous person deployed there, the most heroic person to serve there was arguably Sergeant William Jasper, who risked his life replacing a South Carolina flag that had been shot down by British artillery.

Pack a picnic to eat at the pier and enjoy the views of the ocean from one of their picnic tables. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might even be lucky enough to spot the school of bottlenose dolphins that live there or even one of the resident manatees!

All their felines are rescue cats that are up for adoption. So even if you don’t take a fur-baby home, just having a coffee there while petting a cat is one of the most fun Charleston activities, and some of the money goes toward looking after the animals.

4. Enjoy American Artists at the Gibbes Museum of Art

Spread out over three floors with two rotating exhibits, the Gibbes Museum of Art is another one of the must-do things in Charleston. With a focus on American artists, much of the permanent collection contains artwork inspired by the unique landscape and cultural heritage of this region, from colonial times to the present day.

The first-ever American miniatures were painted in Charleston. These tiny portraits (that pre-date photography) could fit on the palm of your hand and were created using thin disks of ivory painted with watercolors. They depict locals in a truly intimate way, and to this day, that piece of history lives on at the Gibbes.

With over 600 pieces, spanning from early colonial times all the way up to the 20th century, this collection is one of the most prestigious American portrait miniature collections in the country.

For aspiring artists or those looking to learn a new skill, they have workshops throughout the year, from illustration to 3D collage classes. They also have regular talks and lectures, many of which are about trending topics like “art and conservation” and “NFTs and their role in the art world.”

chai y'all tours charleston sc

Charles Towne Landing was the first permanent English settlement in Carolina, with settlers arriving there as early as 1670. Here, you’ll see how the early settlers lived their day-to-day lives, from their working conditions right down to walking into their homes and seeing the food on their plates. Be sure to also wander around the humble museum and go aboard the replica boat near the marsh.

Explore the experimental garden to see what crops the early colonists planted for food (like cereals) and what they planted for profit (like sugarcane and indigo). The park’s live oak trees have spread their many branches outwards to create a stunning natural tunnel that you can walk through. Coupled with the beautiful moss blanket that gives the trees a glowing green hue, this is an amazing spot for photos – so much so that many people choose to get married here!

Something quite unique about this landmark is its historic natural habitat zoo, which is home to animals that were indigenous to the Lowcountry in the 1670s, including bison and pumas, both of which have been extinct from the area for over a century.

12. Learn All About the History of the African-American Charlestonians with Gullah Tours

Led by the enthusiastic Mr. Alphonso Brown, the author of A Gullah Guide to Charleston: Walking Through Black History , Gullah Tours are a fascinating way to learn about the history of Charleston from an African-American perspective. The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is an artistic gem set on the grounds of a historic college campus and one of the must-do things to Charleston for art lovers. Halsey was the first person to teach a studio art course at the College of Charleston, and when he retired, the Studio Art faculty voted to name the gallery after him to honor his contribution to the arts in Charleston.

Since they opened their doors in 1983, Halsey has presented over 275 exhibitions and has showcased work from over 2,000 artists. The highlight of The Ghosts of Charleston Tour is entering the lush, spellbinding Unitarian Church Graveyard built in 1772. Real time hauntings occur only a handful of times a year. However, since 1996, when we started what is now Charleston’s oldest ghost tour, spirits in the Unitarian Church Graveyard have reached out to many people on our tour in visual, tactile and auditory ways.

During our 90 minute walking ghost tour, our tour guides recount hauntings and supernatural events from the best-selling book The Ghosts of Charleston.

No other tour company in Charleston has attracted more media attention than Tour Charleston LLC/The Ghosts of Charleston since 1996, the year we started our business. Among the national media publications who have written articles and recommended us are The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Southern Living, National Geographic Traveler, Travel and Leisure, In Style and hundreds of newspapers across the USA, the UK and Australia.

Since 1999, five different Hollywood film companies have produced numerous big budget television shows in which our tour guides narrated stories from The Ghosts of Charleston with actors and special effects that made them come alive. The History Channel and HGTV created the most popular ones and still broadcast them nationally and internationally; these shows put Charleston supernatural activity on the map.

There is no experience like walking enchanted Charleston at night, listening to our singular supernatural stories woven with history of the story behind the story, and encountering what you will see and hear in the Unitarian Church Graveyard. Come walk with us!

"Great afternoon with Bill as our guide! Very intimate, informative and historically interesting. We’ve been to Charleston many times, but learned SO much during our walk with Bill. He must of been a magnificent US history teacher, a true historian who shared so many details and fun facts about our route. I highly recommend this tour - for the first time visitor or even a resident. 5 stars indeed!"

"Even on a rainy January morning, we were glad not to miss this experience. With only one day to spend in Charleston, we definitely wanted to hit the ground walking...and Dennis was a great guide to help us see the town through it’s layered, sometimes literally tortured, historical lens. Highly recommended!"

"Fantastic Tour. This is the one tour guide YOU DONT WANT to MISS! We were so fortunate to have Evans Byrd as our guide. By far the BEST tour we have ever done. Evans, a Charleston native, gives such vivid details of historical events and people that he transports you back in time. His knowledge and insight truly made this tour outstanding. Highly recommend!"

"My husband and I totally loved our walking tour of Charleston. Evans was an incredible tour guide with a plethora of interesting historical information. Seeing the sights was made so much more fascinating because of the personal interesting stories Evans told along with the facts of each sight. Evans, thank you for making our tour such a fun, memorable interesting experience."

"We did the alley tour and fortunately for us, we were the only couple. Capt Jim took advantage of our small group and customized the tour to fit us. We loved the history and detailed stories. Jim is a wealth of knowledge. If money were no object, I would hire Jim for our whole visit. Great tour for us and we highly recommend."

Tourist Seasons in Charleston, South Carolina

Before planning your trip, take the city’s tourist seasons into consideration, as they’ll likely impact everything from the crowds to airfare and hotel prices.

  • High Season: March through May and September through November
  • Shoulder Season: June through August
  • Low Season: December (except for the holidays) through February

Josh Marthers, meteorologist at WCBD News 2

Any time is a great time to visit the best city in the world.

Best Times to Visit Charleston for Good Weather

Spring and fall are prime times to comfortably explore all of Charleston’s beauty. Take it from local meteorologist Josh Marthers of WCBD News 2 : “Any time is a great time to visit the best city in the world, but a couple of periods really shine. Our driest months are typically April and November with quite mild temperatures from late March through mid-May. We see those nicer temperatures and lower humidity levels return late September through mid-November.” Average temperatures in April range from upper 50s to low 70s, while those in November from low 50s to upper 60s.

One caveat worth considering: The city is subject to hurricanes, with the Atlantic season running from the start of June through the end November and peak time for such storms lasting August through October. Of course, to Marthers’ point, assuming that there are no tropical storms or hurricanes on the radar, October is a lovely, mild-weathered month to visit, with average temperatures ranging from low 60s to mid 70s.

Best Time to Visit Charleston for Lower Prices and Smaller Crowds

Planning a trip for the winter months (December through February) is the best way to experience so many of the Holy City’s highlights without having to battle crowds or pay premium rates for accommodations (holidays and festival weekends can be exceptions). While you likely won’t be swimming—unless you brave one of the area beaches’ New Year’s Day Polar Plunges—the milder winter weather still allows for beautiful beach walks and bundled-up picnics.

For Tyler Page Wright Friedman, certified tour guide and founder of Walk & Talk Charleston, winter is actually one of her favorite times of year in the city: "Winter is an ideal season to explore downtown and all of our world-class museums," she says. And the rewards extend beyond lower cost and smaller crowds: "Historically, the holiday season was the social season in Charleston," she explains. "Many of the gardens were designed to bloom during this time, and so we have the beautiful camellias, Christmas senna, and the sweetgrass has turned a beautiful shade of pink." It's also oyster season, Friedman notes, so put all of those together, and you've landed yourself the perfect Charleston winter weekend.

For those willing who don't mind sweating a little, you may also consider visiting during the city’s shoulder season, June through August.  Chef Mike Lata , who owns two of the city's most beloved restaurants ( FIG and The Ordinary ), says late June is the shoulder season’s sweet spot: “Things start to slow down, so it’s a bit easier to get hotel deals and reservations at restaurants. The weather is warm but not stifling.  There is also lots of great local food to eat and the water has had a chance to warm up, making for great fishing, surfing, and general beachgoing.”

Best Times to Visit Charleston for Festivals and Events

The Holy City plays host to a number of festivals and events throughout the year, all of which celebrate the various hallmarks of the historic peninsula town.  Festival season here kicks off with mid-February’s Southeastern Wildlife Exposition , more commonly referred to as SEWE (pronounced “see-wee”), when nature lovers, conservationists, and outdoorsmen descend on the city to shop a host of wildlife-oriented artists and exhibitors, attend cooking demos, and watch dogs participate in water jumping competitions. (The weekend is also an exception to winter’s typically smaller crowds.)

In March and April, the Historic Charleston Foundation hosts its longest-running annual event, The Charleston Festival (formerly called the Festival of Houses and Gardens), which celebrates the city’s history and culture through a series of lectures on preservation and design, as well as tours of privately owned homes and gardens. April’s first Saturday also lays claim to the annual Cooper River Bridge Run , which invites runners and walkers of all skill levels to “Get Over It,” “It” being the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge that connects the suburb of Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston over the Cooper River.

Late May into June brings one of Charleston’s hallmark events, Spoleto Festival USA , when world-class performers, musicians, dancers, and artists from around the globe bring their talents to the Holy City for a 17-day series of live performances, art shows and exhibitions, and artist talks.

You’ll also find the Southern Living team in town twice throughout the year—in September for our Tailgate Party (part of the first-ever Food & Wine Classic in Charleston ) and again in December for Illumination Charleston (a curated holiday market, plus demos from our favorite chefs and entertaining experts; 2024 dates not yet announced).

Best Times to Visit Charleston for a Beach Trip

If you’re planning to spend most of your Lowcountry stay playing on the area’s surrounding beaches , rather than diving into historic walking tours, summer is a great time to visit, as an ocean breeze or quick dip in the water can relieve even the hottest, muggiest day. By June, the ocean and other waterways have warmed up, making for comfortable swimming and other watersports, like surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

Pop-up afternoon thunderstorms aren’t uncommon in the summer, but they usually clear up as quickly as they roll in. July and August tend to see the most rain (8 or 9 days of rainfall), so if you’re faced with a wet day, take advantage of one of the city’s many museums, from The Gibbes Museum of Art to the recently opened International African American Museum , or explore all the amazing local shops .

Worst Times to Visit Charleston

The worst time to visit Charleston is subjective, as it depends on your personal travel preferences and those activities you plan to enjoy while there. However, as a born-and-raised Charleston native who often felt pity for the sweating, red-faced tourists who trudged past as I sat in the comfort of my mom’s air-conditioned car, July and August are about the most miserable months to plan a trip centered around walking tours and general sightseeing. In my experience, I’ve found that a beach day on Sullivan’s Island —or a reservation at one of our many delicious (and air-conditioned) restaurants—are about the only antidotes to our summer’s scorching heat.

It’s also worth noting that Charleston is home to a couple of colleges, including The Citadel and the College of Charleston, so if you’re not looking to be swept up in the excitement of move-in or graduation weekends, consult their academic calendars before booking your travel.

My family recently visited Charleston and the Tour Pass was the way to go! We chose the Carriage Ride, an absolute must! The Walking Ghost Tour was creepy for sure, but very entertaining and Fort Sumter was pretty cool also. We loved taking advantage of the Standard Features as well, enjoying free donuts and dole whip and the Fun Park was a highlight of the trip as well. The merchants were very friendly and happy to honor our pass. I wouldn’t go to Charleston again without taking advantage of the TourPass. 10 out 10!

Purchased the TourPass online in advance of our trip. We selected a two day pass which included 3 premium selections and as many standard selections we could fit in.

Slick, slick, slick! The premium tours tell you how many spots are available which made it easy to know if you have time to choose or pick right away. Once selected you just go at the appointed time and tell the provider you are using tourpass. Your name is on their list! Worked flawlessly!

The Standard tours is just as simple. You go, tell them you have tourpass, you click a button, the provider gives you a code which you type in and click submitt. That's it! Enjoy!

This system works great and is a savings. Makes scheduling your vist EZPZ!

If you're on the fence, buy it!

Initially, I had some amount of distrust ordering on line. Worried that tickets would not come through, etc. Mathematically pre calculated if TourPass could offer savings compared to purchasing admission tickets individually. TourPass certainly did! To get the most out of our day, I planned an aggressive itinerary. We even brought sandwiches for lunch, so as not to waste a minute. We were able to get in 6 standard tours and one featured! Our second featured tour on Red Boat was cancelled. TourPass promptly refunded this amount on my credit card. No hassle, no worries! We did the1 day St Augustine pass. The featured Trolley Tour was outstanding, as were standard tours The Oldest Store and Jail. If I ever get to Savanah or Charleston will definitely go with TourPass. They did a great job of covering St Augustine’s highlights. Their app was user friendly and showed proximity of nearby attractions, saving steps and time. Everything was so easy. It’s not often one has such a positive experience. TourPass offers value and demonstrated integrity. You can trust them.

Our tour pass was worth the price. It's actually a money saver. We took the tour of St Augustine and got our bearings. It also helped us select the attractions. The drivers were pleasant, very helpful, and steeped in St Augustine history. Simply wonderful!

This made our Savannah trip so much easier to plan and to see all the attractions we wanted. It saved me over $100. In three days, we were able to visit all the places we wanted plus more! I would highly recommend buying this tour pass!

My husband and I went to St. Augustine for 2 days and wanted to see as much as possible. By using TourPass we were able to see the most popular attractions at a greatly reduced price. I would definitely use TourPass in other cities!

Purchasing a Tour Pass was the best decision for us! We saw many more attractions that we would have without it! So efficient too! Pay once and go, go, go! We would highly recommend it!

I purchased the Savannah tour pass for 3 days, I did not use them consecutively, as I was on town for 8 days. I chose to do the Hop on Hop off Tour on my first day to give me an overview of Savannah, I rode the trolleys for a total of two loops, guide offered a different perspective on the city. I took a walking tour, Brad was awesome, 1.5 hrs of wonderful history. I rode the Paddle boat, was a bit disappointed the wheel doesn't function. I also visited Fort Pulaski on my last day in Savannah, it was a wonderful experience. Those were the 4 featured options I used. I also used multiple options from the normal options, my 2 favorites were the Square Pops and the Jepsen Art Center. I cannot express how awesome it was to be able to enter a venue, have it paid for, and just enjoy. I will purchase the Savannah Pass when I return next year, it was well worth it's value. Now I am hopeful the Charleston, SC Pass, that it is just as terrific, as I am visiting in the Fall.

This was awesome value for the money, we were in both places the first week in March with another couple and it made planning things to do much easier and the value was outstanding. We figure we saved about $100 per couple.

We purchased the two day St. Augustine TourPass and found the pass well worth the money, providing us with access to museums and tours we might have passed on had we had to pay full price to see without the pass. Highly recommend purchasing, especially if in the area for several days.

So easy! Tour passed saved us over $200 dollars. Just scan your phone and enjoy. Great way to visit St. Augustine.

Tour Pass made our trip so easy to navigate. Easy check in at all our locations! Saved us a lot of time.

My contact at Tour Pass for both Savannah and Charleston was a gentleman named Keith. He went above and beyond to help me in setting up the events/days and was extremely patient with a non-technologically adept mature individual like me. He helped every time I called and was always charming while doing so which reduced my stress level. He also assisted when a day change was needed and on a refund for an event. It felt like my sister and I had a friend in the area!

The events were good selections and the information provided for each was appreciated. What would have added to the info for tourists would have been info about parking availability.

Loved it and saved money. St Augustine is such a fun city. Makes planning and visiting soooo much easier. I’ve purchased Tour Pass in all of their cities now (Charleston, Savannah and now St Augustine).

5 stars all the way! So many worthwhile attractions to choose from. Don’t even need to think twice or research more. Worth all the money for however many days of your visit. Plus so easy to use. Enough said! We will definitely be back and buy the Tour Pass all over again.

A Cruising Couple

These Are the Best Cruises Out of Charleston, South Carolina

by Contractor | Nov 12, 2020 | resources , Travel Tips | 0 comments

Did you know that you can set sail out of South Carolina? Charleston’s coastal location, combined with its rich and vibrant history, makes for the perfect beginning to a southern-bound cruise . In fact, there are a plethora of different cruise options departing from Charleston, with destinations in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and United States.

There are three cruise lines that sail out of Charleston:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • American Cruise Line
  • Crystal Cruises

Below are eight of the best cruises out of Charleston, along with all the details you need to know: pricing, activities, and high-level descriptions. Read on to decide which cruise is the perfect one for you!

Charleston to Freeport & Nassau

chai y'all tours charleston sc

The first cruise on the list is a five-day round trip on the Carnival Sunshine, stopping in the cities of Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas. This is an excellent option for a quick and affordable trip that can fit into any schedule.

The Carnival Sunshine is a 900-foot long vessel that can hold up to 3000 passengers. Onboard activities include spas, waterslides, and delicious eateries for the whole family. Even the basic interior room is comfortably sized!

Guests spend several days traveling on open waters with one whole day spent in each Freeport and Nassau to explore. Passengers can also choose to embark on one of the cruise line’s shore excursions, such as swimming with the dolphins in Nassau or touring the island of Freeport. Excursions can be booked online for an extra fee.

The total cost of the five-day trip starts at $289 per person, which includes onboard entertainment and some dining options.

Charleston to Princess Cays

This Bahamas route is a bit shorter than the first cruise, clocking in at four days instead of five, with only one destination. Passengers will once again board the Carnival Sunshine. But this time, they will travel to Princess Cays to spend an entire day before returning back to Charleston. Unlike the cruise to Freeport and Nassau, only one day is spent at the destination.

The time spent in Princess Cays may be short, but Carnival Cruises offers plenty of shore excursions to enjoy. Choose between snorkeling, kayaking, or biking around the island. If you choose to embark on your own adventure, there are plenty of local villages and beaches to explore at your leisure.

This cruise is significantly cheaper than the Freeport and Nassau route, costing a total of $229 per person.

This price includes the following:

  • Entertainment

Charleston to Eastern Caribbean

Combine the best of both worlds with this cruise, stopping in both the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Passengers will board the Carnival Sunshine for seven days, with stops in:

  • Half Moon Cay

Like the first two cruises, shore excursions are available at each of the destinations. Guests can enjoy an adrenaline rush wading through waterfalls in Amber Cove, paddleboarding in Grand Turk, and touring a lagoon in Half Moon Cay.

Onboard, guests can entertain themselves with a variety of options offered by the cruise line, including admission to the Kids Club, which is included in the price of the ticket. There’s even an arcade open 24 hours a day! As for adults, the casino is a great place to try your luck.

Guests can choose between interior, balcony, ocean view, or suite rooms. The pricing for each starts as follows:

Charleston to the Caribbean in Luxury

chai y'all tours charleston sc

For a luxurious, all-inclusive trip, check out the Crystal Cruises twelve-night trip through the Caribbean. Named “Best Cruise Line” in Travel & Leisure Magazine, this company certainly isn’t messing around. Michelin-inspired dining and an onboard dress code are sure to wow passengers at every step.

The cruise makes several stops along the way, including:

  • Cape Canaveral, Florida
  • Bimini, Bahamas
  • Ocho Rios, Jamaica
  • Oranjestad, Aruba
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico

Once onboard, guests can enjoy a myriad of luxurious experiences. In fact, there are nine delectable eateries on the ship!

Passengers will stay in either staterooms or penthouses and enjoy amenities such as golf lessons and a fitness center. According to Charleston Voyage , the dress code is casual until six p.m., when it becomes black tie optional.

Charleston Through the Historic South

Want a trip that stays closer to home? American Cruise Line offers an eight-day trip through the Intracoastal Waterway for a journey back in time. Guests will embark on the intimately sized American Star, with a total guest capacity of 100 people.

Stops in Beaufort, Hilton Head Island, Savannah, and Jekyll Island offer a plethora of activities for interested passengers. The company suggests visiting Millionaire’s Village in Jekyll Island, a large historical landmark full of homes and cottages.

Beaufort also boasts its own selection of things to see, including Penn Center, the first school for freed slaves. You can also participate in local activities such as fishing or throwing axes!

Each destination is laden with historic sights, making this cruise perfect for families and history buffs alike. However, the price is far heftier than others on this list: guests should expect to pay at least $4,100 per person.

Charleston to Baltimore

Travel through the Mid-Atlantic Inside Passage with American Cruise Line on an eight-day trip to Baltimore, Maryland. Similar to the tour of the Historic South, passengers can explore everything the northeast has to offer.

Guests will board either the American Star or the Independence, both with a passenger capacity of 100 for a smaller and more intimate experience.

The ship will travel through:

There will be ample opportunities to enjoy pristine nature and wildlife along the way.

The cruise line offers a Historic Mansions tour through Wilmington, and guests can choose their own adventures and explore whatever they’re interested in. The line suggests visiting Norfolk’s Naval Station, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and the site of the Wright Brothers’ first flight.

While cheaper than its southern counterpart, guests can expect to pay upwards of $3,800 per person for the trip.

Charleston to Southern Caribbean

chai y'all tours charleston sc

Lastly, embark on a ten-day trip through the Southern Caribbean on the Carnival Sunshine.

Guests will spend several days at sea before arriving in:

  • Princess Cays

While onboard, enjoy entertainment options such as the Punchliner Comedy Club and Hasbro Game Show. Adults can even enjoy a kid-free retreat.

Guests have several dining options, including Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint, as well as miscellaneous cuisines such as Italian and Japanese. Once arrived at the destinations, guests can enjoy a myriad of shore excursions led by a team of professionals.

While the specific activities available depend on the destination, the majority of Caribbean shore excursions include some type of water activity like sailing or snorkeling. A full list of these excursions can be viewed on the Carnival Cruise Line’s website .

Like the cruise to the Eastern Caribbean, guests have the option of several different room types to fit their needs. However, all passengers can expect to pay at least $700 per person.

Final Thoughts

While Charleston, South Carolina may not seem like a big hub for cruise activity, there are plenty of different cruise options to enjoy. Whether you’re more interested in sun and surf in the Bahamas or a historical trip through the northeastern United States, Charleston has something for you. We hope this list has given you some inspiration for your next vacation!
