Music in Louisiana

Louisiana's history is imbued with music that came, developed and arose as a wide range of cultural influences that took root, resulting in the birth of Jazz.  Music echoes Louisiana’s past and encompasses its present through the live, vibrant sounds that pulse through homes, neighbourhoods and venues of all our cities. Music is a part of everyday life, with inherited tunes and instruments bringing the Louisiana music heritage to life.   From the night life of New Orleans to Lake Charles resounding sounds of the festival stages from Shreveport to Lafayette to Thibodaux. If you don't hear Louisiana's music live, you haven't heard Louisiana's music.

Music in Mississippi

It's known as the birthplace of the blues, but Mississippi sings other songs as well, from bluegrass and country to rock 'n' roll. Fans of the music of Elvis Presley won't want to miss Tupelo, one of the many sites on the Mississippi Country Music Trail, visit the two-room house in which the boy who would become the King of rock 'n' roll was born. Clarksdale's rich blues heritage is world-famous, and its numerous markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail are reminders of the blues greats that honed their sound here.

Music in Tennessee

Some places you listen to music, in Tennessee you live it! Follow neon-lit clubs down Beale Street, Memphis, where its soul is true blues. Dance to your favourite video clip at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. In Nashville see stars at the Grand Ole Opry House and visit the Ryman Auditorium where they tip their hats to country, bluegrass and gospel. Even Tennessee's smaller musical landmarks make global connections in places such as Knoxville's Visitor's Center, home to the daily radio music show known as The Blue Plate Special, and Bluegrass Underground at Cumberland Caverns. Another attraction is the new Tina Turner Museum in Brownsville, located between Memphis and Jackson.

Today you'll land in Atlanta, Georgia where you'll meet your tour manager at the airport, and transfer to your first hotel, the Drury Inn and Suites in Montgomery, Alabama.

After a long journey, you'll have some free time to enjoy your first evening in the South, in the city where country legend Hank Williams was laid to rest, and where a special museum celebrates his short, but spectacular career.

This morning you'll set off south across Alabama, into Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast to the great musical city of New Orleans.

You'll stay for two nights in the city known as the Big Easy, but you should waste no time in soaking up the atmosphere of one of the most exuberant places on the face of the planet.

This morning you'll have the chance to join an insightful guided tour as the perfect introduction to New Orleans.

See the wrought-iron balconies and covered sidewalks of the iconic French Quarter, the brightly painted wooden houses of Tremé and the three spires of St Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square.

This afternoon, there's a chance to go on a Louisiana Swampland excursion to get a glimpse of the surrounding countryside and a taste of real Creole life.

Later this evening, you'll head back to the French Quarter to immerse yourself in the incomparable nightlife of the place that brought jazz to the world over one hundred years ago, and where the sounds and spirits of Louis Armstrong and 'King' Oliver still live on in the vast number of lively bars and clubs.

Say farewell to New Orleans this morning, as you check out of your hotel and travel north into Mississippi, the cradle of the Delta blues and once home to the likes of Robert Johnson and Sonny Boy Williamson.

You'll visit Tupelo, and see the tiny house in which Elvis Aaron Presley was born, in January 1935, before continuing to Elvis's beloved hometown, Memphis, the buzzing city on the banks of the the Big Muddy.

As well as being forever associated with The King, Memphis boasts a musical heritage to rival any city in the world. This evening, why not soak up the atmosphere of colourful Beale Street and its near-endless choice of restaurants and bars, many of which offer live music?

Today there's the chance to join a full-day Memphis Sounds excursion, which will include the legendary Sun Studio where rock and roll was born in 1951 with the recording of 'Rocket 88'. Sun Studio is also where the course of music history was changed with Elvis's live recording of Arthur Crudup's 'That's Alright, Mama'.

From Sun Studio, you'll make your way to Elvis Presley Boulevard and visit to Graceland, the King's home, recording studio and final resting place.

At the end of a long but unforgettable day, enjoy another evening in Memphis, perhaps sampling some of the mouthwatering food that's led to its unofficial position as The Barbecue Capital of America.

Today you'll switch musical genres and travel east to Nashville - the country music capital of the world and your base for the next two nights.

Home of the legendary Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry, and to scores of hugely accomplished guitarists and songwriters, Nashville is one of America's foremost music cities. Why not head out, tonight, to catch some more live music before turning in?

There's a chance to take a final excursion today in Nashville to visit the legendary Studio B - home to countless country hits and a galaxy of Elvis's RCA recordings. This historic Studio became known as the birthplace of the "Nashville Sound," a style characterized by strings and background vocals that helped establish Nashville as an international recording centre.

You can also pay a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame while here. One of the most-visited history museums in the U.S., this museum is packed to the brim with exhibitions relating to country music.

This afternoon you'll have some free time to experience more of Nashville's musical delights at your own pace.

You'll leave Nashville today for a scenic drive south to Chattanooga (of "choo-choo" fame), a quintessential southern trading town beautifully set on the Tennessee River, before travelling onwards to Atlanta airport to check in for your overnight flight back to the UK.

Road Trip Itinerary

All of our American road trips can be tailored to meet your requirements. Do you have more or less than 14 days for your road trip? No problem, we can bolt on extra nights to allow more time to explore or shorten the number of destinations as required.

Start your American Music Tour in Chicago

After touching down at Chicago O’Hare, you’ll jump in a cab and head downtown towards one of the world’s best skylines. After settling into your hotel, which we carefully selected for you, you’ll have three nights and two full days to get to grips with this incredible city on Lake Michigan’s shoreline. If you wish to stay longer and explore more of Chicago, just let us know when you request your quote.

Chicago, IL

Lake Michigan, Chicago, Great Lakes, Illinois, USA

Discover the Windy City's must see places

Most visitors to Chicago head straight to the ‘Magnificent Mile’, a vibrant street home to upscale shops, trendy restaurants and posh hotels. Landmarks include the historic Chicago Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower and the 100-story Hancock Center, which has a rooftop observation deck called 360 Chicago. Spend the rest of the day exploring some of the other attractions found north of the Chicago River. These include Navy Pier, Wrigley Field and the beaches along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Chicago, Illinois, Route 66, USA

A third day to explore Chicago

On your final full day in Chicago, we recommend that you spend time visiting the city’s attractions that are located south of the Chicago River. Many of America’s best museums are found here, including the Art Institute, the Alder Planetarium, and the Field Museum of Natural History. Be sure to stroll around Millennium Park; you’ll find world-famous outdoor artwork like Cloud Gate and Crown Fountain for those all-important social media snaps. Lastly, before leaving town, make sure you spend at least one evening partying at Buddy Guy’s Legends Nightclub.

Cloud Gate in Chicago, Route 66

Visit Indianapolis, en route to lovely Louisville

On your way to Louisville, you’ll pass by Indianapolis. Motorsport fans should check out Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home to the iconic Indy500 and more. Next, you’ll cruise south to Louisville, which you may know due to its rich horse racing pedigree; after all, it’s home to the legendary Kentucky Derby. Or, maybe you’ve drunk a drop or two of bourbon with Louisville written on the label? Additionally, Louisville is famous for Folk music, baseball and amazing fried chicken.

Louisville, KY

Indianapolis - skyline at twilight

A full day to discover Louisville's highlights

Today’s options include a visit to the beautiful Churchill Downs Racetrack, educating yourself on the life and times of arguably the greatest sportsmen of the 20th Century at the Muhammad Ali Center or perhaps just spend the day sampling the products of numerous bourbon distilleries found in the city or along the Bourbon Trail.

Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Drive down to Music City - Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is the proud home of Country Music, and this booming city boasts about its musical heritage at every opportunity. Home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and the legendary RCA Studio B, where Elvis, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson all recorded hits. It’s not all about country music mind, the region has a rich blues history too, with singers and songwriters from every genre calling ‘Music City’ home.

Nashville, TN

Skyline of Nashville, Tennessee

A second day to enjoy Nashville's sights and sounds

Head to the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge (colloquially known in Nashville as simply the ‘Pedestrian Bridge’), which spans the Cumberland River. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better view of the Nashville skyline anywhere. After the sun sets and for the complete traveller experience, head down to Broadway and stop by a honky-tonk or two for a one-of-a-kind night of drinking and live music.

Drive the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway to Tupelo

Today, you’ll leave the home of Country Music and go in search of the spiritual homes of the Blues, Soul and Rock’n’Roll. To get you to Memphis you’ll follow the first half of the delightful Natchez Trace Parkway, which was originally an old Indian trading route. Today, this scenic Parkway is used as a serene way to cruise by Muscle Shoals, where artists like The Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin recorded hits before moving onto Tupelo, where Elvis was born and raised.

Natchez Trace Parkway, bridge near nashville

A short drive from Tupelo to Memphis

Today is all about the King, Elvis Presley. Start the day off by visiting the tiny house Elvis was born in and the neighbouring church where he sang as a child. You’ll then leave Tupelo and move on to Memphis, along the way, you’ll pass Graceland, the final resting place of Elvis. Second only to The White House, Elvis Presley’s Graceland is arguably the most iconic home in America and a must-see for anyone visiting Memphis. Finally, after settling into your Memphis hotel, we highly recommend you hit Beale Street for live music, soul food and dancing.

Memphis, TN

Beale Street, Memphis

Another day to experience Memphis's sights

Memphis has plenty more to offer, including the legendary Sun Studios and the moving National Civil Rights Museum. In our humble opinion, Memphis is the Barbecue Capital of America, so make sure you try a rib joint or two if you can. As always, your personalised Road Trip Pack will show you the full range of things to see and do in the city, and you can do as much or as little as you please.

Guitar, Nashville, Memphis Tennessee, USA

Discover The Blues in the Mississippi Delta

Today, you’ll drive south through the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta, exploring small towns like Clarksdale, Indianola and Cleveland as you go. These towns were the birthplace of The Blues and thus Rock ‘n’ Roll as we know it today. By the time you reach the plantation houses of Natchez, your understanding of 20th Century music will be transformed. End the day by taking in a tour of one of the many antebellum plantation houses found in Natchez, followed by drinks at the Under the Hill Saloon.

Natchez, MS

Natchez, Deep South America - Plantation House

Cruise down the Great River Road to New Orleans

Continue south along the Great River Road to your final destination – New Orleans. Along the way, we highly recommend you stop by the historic Oak Alley Plantation for a quick tour of the house and grounds. If you only do one plantation home, then this is the one in our opinion. Once you arrive in “The Big Easy”, the French Quarter will be waiting to offer you dinner, drinks, and all that Jazz.

New Orleans, LA

Oak Alley Plantation, Louisiana, USA

The French Quarter, Garden Quarter and more

Built on the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is the home of the jazz, voodoo and the craziness that is Mardi Gras. The French Quarter offers so much charm; it’s a great place to take a walking tour, whilst sampling great food and live music as you stroll.

New Orleans, LA, American Music Tour - Bourbon St

End your American Music Tour in The Big Easy!

This will be your final full day of your American Music Tour. Use it to discover more of New Orleans’s must-see attractions and to sample the nightlife. The following day, you’ll leave for the airport to fly home. Whether you call it NOLA, The Big Easy or just plain old New Orleans, we’re confident this vibrant city will stay with you for many years.

Atlanta is a dynamic city with a fascinating history. Founded in 1837 as a community at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad, it was virtually burnt to the ground during the US Civil War. Undeterred, the city rose from the ashes and became the centre of the Civil Rights movement in the 20th century. Later we'll drive to Nashville for a two night stay. On your free evening be sure to explore the city's Broadway and Honky Tonk Highway, a strip of venues where there is live music 365 days a year.

Day 3 Nashville

We have a fabulous music-themed day in store for you today. It begins as you step inside the hallowed halls of Studio B, which has been dubbed the ‘birthplace of the Nashville Sound’, a popular style of country music. It was built in 1957 and over two decades, many hits were recorded here by artists including Elvis Presley. Standing in the very studio where he recorded ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ with the lights dimmed and his incredible voice flowing from the speakers, is sure to be a truly special moment. You’re also going to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, an incredible museum packed full of exhibits and music-themed memorabilia.

There's one more exciting experience to come if you choose to attend an optional evening of live music at the Grand Ole Opry. Take your seats for the world-famous show where some of today’s best artists celebrate the joy of country music.

Day 4 Memphis

The next great musical city you'll visit is Memphis, standing proudly on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. When we arrive this afternoon, we're going to set off together to discover some of its many highlights. They include the Riverfront, historic Cotton Row, and Beale Street, the home of the blues. On this iconic street, music emanates from every open door, and street performers entertain the crowds. You could perhaps head back here for a drink and dinner this evening.

Day 5 Memphis

Memphis is synonymous with Elvis Presley, and today we're going to find out about this connection. We'll pay a visit to Sun Studios, where the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' made his first recordings back in 1954.

This is followed by Graceland, where we'll take a fascinating guided tour of the opulent mansion that was his home from 1957 until his death in 1977. Here you can fully immerse yourself in his career and personal life, exploring the famous Jungle Room, living room, kitchen, TV room, pool room and other highlights. The tour ends at the Meditation Garden, where Elvis is buried alongside his parents.

We'll also find time today to visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, located on the site of the Stax recording studio and record label of legends such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. This is sure to be a wonderful highlight of your holiday, and you can round it off by enjoying dinner wherever you fancy in Memphis – ask your Holiday Director for recommendations if you wish.

Day 6 Memphis - at leisure

Today has been left free for you to explore more of Memphis at leisure. Maybe you'll choose to visit the National Civil Rights Museum, located at the former Lorraine Motel. Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at this very spot in April 1968 and the museum’s fascinating exhibits tell inspiring stories about the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. There are plenty of other options too, including the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum.

Alternatively, if you enjoyed your visit to Graceland yesterday, today's optional excursion is sure to be tempting. Why not come with us to Tupelo, to see the house where Elvis was born. You'll also get to visit a fantastic museum displaying one of the most remarkable collections of Elvis memorabilia in the world.

Day 7 Vicksburg

We’re going to take to the road today, leaving Memphis behind and crossing the border into Mississippi. We’ll travel through the Mississippi Delta, said to be the birthplace of the Delta Blues – a style of Blues music that developed in the early 20th century. Making a stop in the small town of Indianola, we’ll visit the BB King Museum to learn about the life and music of the legendary ‘King of the Blues’.

After time for lunch, our journey will continue to Vicksburg.

Day 8 Natchez - New Orleans

As we head deeper south, we're going to make a stop in Natchez, a historic town on the banks of the Mississippi River. This laid-back destination is filled with grand mansions and we’ll visit one today to learn about southern life in the antebellum period, before the Civil War. We’ll admire the stunning architecture of this palatial home and see some of the antiques it was originally furnished with.

Our ultimate destination today is the 'Big Easy', or New Orleans, home to another musical genre - jazz. When we arrive, a sightseeing tour will introduce us to many of the city’s highlights, including the stunning triple-steepled St Louis Cathedral, and cemeteries filled with unique, white-marble above-the-ground tombs.

Your hotel is located just steps from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter. It is the city’s vibrant heart and oldest district, and tonight you are free to make your own discoveries. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, so why not head out and see what’s on offer for dinner.

Day 9 New Orleans

You’re going to uncover the charm of the French Quarter and learn all about its history on a walking tour this morning. A Local Guide will lead us through the historic streets and point out highlights including Jackson Square, Pirate's Alley, and the world-famous Bourbon Street. The walk ends at a restaurant, where we’ll enjoy a buffet brunch accompanied by live jazz, in a pretty outdoor courtyard.

The rest of the day is yours to explore the galleries and boutiques of the French Quarter, or if you prefer, you could perhaps head to City Park and discover the Botanical Garden or the New Orleans Museum of Art. We also offer an optional swamp and bayou tour, where you’ll glide through the tranquil beauty of Louisiana’s waterways by boat, looking out for alligators, raccoons and more.

Day 10 New Orleans - at leisure

With so much to discover in New Orleans, you can spend the day exploring at your own pace. Perhaps take a stroll through the open-air French Market and shop for souvenirs to take home before stopping for coffee and beignets - French-style doughnuts - at the famous Café du Monde.

If you’re still keen to discover more, your Holiday Director is hosting an optional afternoon trip on an authentic paddle steamer. Once the only way to travel along the waterways of the South, this trip will take you on a glorious journey back to the 19th-century heyday of these iconic vessels. Sit back and listen to a live jazz band play as you sail along the mighty Mississippi taking in views of New Orleans from the water.

Day 11 New Orleans/UK

Your holiday comes to an end today, so make the most of your last few hours before we drive you to the airport in good time for your flight home.

After an overnight flight, you will arrive back in the UK today.

Tour Reviews

Michaela Cadden

The Gaylord in Nashville was superb, the Holiday Inn in Memphis was really good, the Royal St Charles in New Orleans was poor, but the Sheraton in Houston was great.

Philip Wilson

First class hotels I have never stayed before on any other tour in such nice hotels, with the facilities I want. The people on the tour, we all met at Nashville Airport on arrival with the tour guide, we were all strangers to each other, we all left at the end of the the tour all as friends, I have never been on a tour where every one is so pleasant and kind and we did have a few good laughs and a great cross range of ages which was so very nice.

Brian Cripps

We thought all the hotels were extremely good apart from the Holiday Inn Express in Atlanta which was 'somewhat tired' and not to the same standard as the others

Lyn Richards

Cannot believe the quality of hotels, absolutely amazing

Here, more than 35,000 songs have been recorded by artists including Elvis Presley, and you'll step inside the studio where he recorded Are You Lonesome Tonight? As the lights are dimmed, just as they would have been for the King of Rock 'n' Roll, and you hear his incredible voice flowing from the speakers, you will be sharing a truly special moment. To round off the day you'll visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. There's one more exciting experience to come if you choose to join an optional excursion, an evening of live music at the Grand Ole Opry. This is one of the most important venues for live country music in the world. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4: Memphis

The next great musical city you'll visit is Memphis, standing proudly on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. On this iconic street, music emanates from every open door, and street performers entertain the crowds. Meals included: Breakfast

Here you can fully immerse yourself in his life and career as you go back to his roots. You'll see the living room, kitchen, TV room, pool room and the famous Jungle Room among other highlights. The tour ends at the Meditation Garden, where Elvis is buried alongside his parents. This is sure to be a wonderful highlight of your holiday, and there's more to come tomorrow.

What is daily life in rural Russia? How the traditional Russian village still looks like? This is a very popular question among  foreign travelers.

This August we visited a small Russian village located in the middle of nowhere that is just 250 km from Moscow.

Spend four hours off-roading through the mud and then climbing underground to walk 15-km wild catacombs in Moscow? EASY!

This kind of weekend is quite typical for some Russians (who loves adventures, of course). A couple of journalists joined Tony to see how his Adventure tour really looks!
