The Australian Professor Who Turned Breaking on Its Head

Breaking made its debut as an Olympic sport Friday, and among the competitors was Dr. Rachael Gunn, also known as B-girl Raygun, a 36-year-old professor from Sydney, Australia, who stood out in just about every way.

By day, her research interests include “dance, gender politics, and the dynamics between theoretical and practical methodologies.” But on the world’s stage in Paris, wearing green track pants and a green polo shirt instead of the street-style outfits of her much younger fellow breakers, she competed against the 21-year-old Logan Edra of the United States, known as Logistx.

During the round robin, as Raygun and Logistx faced off, Raygun laid on her side, reached for her toes, spun around, and threw in a kangaroo hop — a nod to her homeland. She performed a move that looked something like swimming and another that could best be described as duckwalking. The high-speed back and head spins that other breakers would demonstrate were mostly absent.

The crowd cheered Raygun politely. The judges weren’t as kind. All nine voted for Logistx in both rounds of the competition; Logistx won, 18-0.

Online, Raygun’s performance quickly became a sensation, not necessarily in a flattering way.

“The more I watch the videos of Raygun, the Aussie breaker, the more I get annoyed,” one viewer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “There’s 27.7 million Australians in the world and that’s who they send to the Olympics for this inaugural event??? C’mon now!”

Another wrote, “I am so embarrassed for our nation.”

The world’s participation in the Games means that every Olympics produces competitors who are earnest but overmatched, like the British ski jumper Michael Edwards, known as Eddie the Eagle , in 1988 or the Ethiopian swimmer Robel Kiros Habte in 2016.

Gunn, who has a Ph.D. in cultural studies from Macquarie University and has a background as a ballroom, jazz and tap dancer , takes the anthropological aspect of breaking seriously.

“The visibility and legitimacy that come with being an Olympic sport will expand professional opportunities for breakers. This is particularly significant for an activity as diverse as breaking,” she wrote last month in The Economist. “Breaking provides an opportunity to explore the ‘faster, higher, stronger’ ethos of the Olympics in new ways. It shows us that we truly don’t know every point on which the body can spin or launch its weight, the different shapes it can make, or all the ways it can move.”

The Paris Games added breaking as part of an effort to appeal to a younger audience . The art form was born on the streets, with its roots in New York’s hip-hop community. Some of breaking’s pioneers are dubious about its inclusion in an organized competition.

“I don’t think it’s an accurate representation of what breaking is,” Odylle Beder, a B-girl from Brooklyn known as Mantis, said in 2023 . “Breaking is a lot more organic, and the way that we do it in the Olympics is, like, ‘Do a round. Stop, look at what your score is. Now do another round.’”

But for some people, there was entertainment value in watching Raygun perform.

“There has not been an Olympic performance this dominant since Usain Bolt’s 100m sprint at Beijing in 2008,” one viewer wrote on X. “Honestly, the moment Raygun broke out her Kangaroo move this competition was over! Give her the #breakdancing gold 🥇”

Logistx is among those who feel strongly that breaking is not taken seriously enough. While the sport was welcomed at the Paris Games, it will not be part of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“As dancers, we’ve always been the bottom of the totem pole,” she said in an interview last week. “We’ve never really been recognized as athletes.”

She had faith that the Games would shine a light on breaking and seal its legitimacy as a sport. “To be here, and to have access to these resources, and to stand next to a lot of legends in sports,” she said, “this is like all of the most high level athletes.”

The Australian Olympian 'Raygun' went viral for her breaking moves. Now she's defending them.

Breaking made its debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics — and while she didn't earn a spot on the podium, the Australian breaker Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, has received plenty of recognition online.

Gunn is a 36-year-old lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney whose research focuses on the "cultural politics of breaking," according to her faculty profile .

But Gunn's time on the Olympic stage was short-lived. The B-girl was eliminated during the round-robin stage of the women's breaking competition, losing in one-on-one battles to the United States' Logistx, France's Syssy, and Lithuania's Nicka.

Raygun didn't earn a point in any of those battles, but as clips of her performance spread online, she got something else: instant meme status.

Here's what you need to know about Raygun now that the breaking competition is over.

Raygun is an academic who studies breaking — and she competes internationally

Before Gunn went to the Olympics, she approached the 2024 Games from an academic perspective.

With her coauthor, Lucas Marie, Gunn published an article in the June 2023 issue of Global Hip Hop Studies titled "The Australian breaking scene and the Olympic Games: The possibilities and politics of sportification." The article examined how the Olympics' institutionalization would affect the Australian breaking scene.

Alongside her academic career, Gunn is a competing B-girl. But before she got into breaking, she had experience with ballroom dancing, jazz, hip-hop, salsa, and tap, The Australian Women's Weekly reported. Gunn told The Sydney Morning Herald that her husband, Samuel Free, introduced her to breaking in 2008 while they were at university. Free is still her coach, she said.

Gunn told Women's Weekly that breaking "hooked" her in 2012, around the time that she began her doctoral program in cultural studies. She began competing more seriously in 2018 and eventually set her sights on the Olympics.

According to her university profile, she was the top-ranked B-girl of the Australian Breaking Association in 2020 and 2021, representing the country at the World DanceSport Federation Breaking Championships in 2021, 2022, and 2023. She also won the WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023.

"My bag always has two main things: It's like, my knee pads and my laptop," Gunn said on the podcast " The Female Athlete Project ." "Because I need my knee-pads to break. And then, yeah, just do some emails quickly. Or like, do some revisions on a chapter I submitted, or copyedit this article I did, or moderate those grades."

The athlete also told the Herald that she preferred to wear "baggy jeans and a baggy T-shirt" while breaking.

"I like the heaviness they bring," Gunn said. "Maybe it's my background in hip-hop, but having weight closer to the ground works for me, gets me in the right headspace."

Raygun's performances at the Olympics sparked memes and criticism

Raygun took the stage at the Olympics wearing a tracksuit in Australia's green and gold, breaking out moves that included hopping like a kangaroo. Her performances attracted attention online and memes that compared her moves to, among other things, dancing children.

But some critics argued that Raygun's performance didn't represent breaking — a sport that will not return to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Breaking came from Black and brown communities in the Bronx in the 1970s. Malik Dixon, an African American man who lives in Australia, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that Gunn came off as "somebody who was toying with the culture" during a significant moment for the sport.

Raygun qualified for the Olympics through the Oceania Breaking Championships

There were three ways to qualify for breaking at the Olympics, which the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) outlined in April 2022: at the WDSF championship in Belgium in September 2023, in a continental qualifier, or in an Olympic qualifier series held in 2024. Gunn qualified regionally by winning the WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships, which were held in Sydney in October 2023.

AUSBreaking organized the Oceania Breaking Championships, according to the WDSF .

AUSBreaking posted on Instagram about the Oceanic Olympic qualifying event on Instagram in September 2023, announcing in a September 25, 2023 post that competitor registration was open. The panel of judges was composed of 10 breakers from multiple countries, led by head judge Katsu One of Japan.

Per the Sydney Morning Herald, Gunn was the highest-scoring B-girl on day one of the championships. She won two battles on the second day to secure her title and a qualifying spot in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

AUSBreaking released a statement on Instagram Monday about the selection process, saying that the qualifying event was "open to all interested participants in the Oceanic region," conducted in line with WDSF standards, and adjudicated by an international panel that used the same judging system as the 2024 Olympics.

"Ultimately, Rachael Gunn and Jeff Dunne emerged as the top performers in exactly the same process, securing their spots to represent Australia in Paris," the statement reads. "Their selection was based solely on their performance in their battles on that day."

Raygun and sporting organizations have spoken out about misinformation after her performance

Claims have circulated online that Gunn unfairly obtained her spot in the games. Posts online, as reported by the Australian Associated Press , claimed that Gunn's husband was one of the judges in her qualifying event. One petition hosted on Change.org claimed that she established the governing body that ran the selection process. That petition was eventually removed after it was placed under review, per an archived snapshot .

A representative for Change.org confirmed to Business Insider on Thursday that the petition had been flagged for misinformation, reviewed per the platform's community guidelines, and removed from the platform.

"Change.org maintains strict guidelines against content that constitutes harassment, bullying, or spreading false information. We take such matters seriously and remove any content that violates these standards to protect our users and uphold the integrity of our community," the rep said in an email statement to BI.

Despite the online claims, Free was not one of the judges at Gunn's qualifying event. And Gunn did not establish AUSBreaking. The organization said in a statement that it was founded by its president Lowe Napalan in 2019, and "at no point" was Gunn "the founder, an executive, committee member, or in any position of leadership."

The Australian Olympic Commission (AOC) also released a statement condemning the Change.org petition, and demanding its removal. It also said that by winning the Oceania championship, Gunn was "legitimately nominated" by DanceSport Australia to the AOC to represent Australia at the Olympics.

"The petition has stirred up public hatred without any factual basis. It's appalling," AOC chief executive officer Matt Carroll said in the statement. "No athlete who has represented their country at the Olympic Games should be treated in this way and we are supporting Dr. Gunn and Anna Meares at this time."

In a video uploaded to her personal Instagram account, Gunn said that she was "honored" to have represented Australia and breaking during its Olympic debut. But the "hate" that followed was "devastating," she said. When it came to misinformation around her qualification, Gunn referred viewers to previously issued statements from the AOC and AUSBreaking.

Raygun and breaking judges have defended her Olympic performance

At a press conference on Saturday, the day after Gunn's competition, Anna Meares, the head of the Australian team, responded to criticism of Gunn online.

"I love Rachael, and I think that what has occurred on social media with trolls and keyboard warriors, and taking those comments and giving them airtime, has been really disappointing," Meares said, per ESPN .

"Raygun is an absolutely loved member of this Olympic team. She has represented the Olympic team, the Olympic spirit with great enthusiasm. And I absolutely love her courage," Meares continued. "I love her character, and I feel very disappointed for her, that she has come under the attack that she has."

During a press conference on Sunday, Martin Gilian, the Olympic breaking head judge, defended Gunn's performance, saying breaking was "all about originality" and representing your roots, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

"This is exactly what Raygun was doing," Gilian said. "She got inspired by her surroundings, which in this case, for example, was a kangaroo."

Gunn said during the Saturday press conference that "all of my moves are original," ESPN reported. She told The Guardian that her biggest strength was "creativity."

"I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative," Gunn told The Guardian, "because how many chances do you get that in a lifetime to do that on an international stage. I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way."

WA government to change legislation in bid to seize City of Perth land for inner-city school build

Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas has angrily accused the WA government of bullying over a plan to seize council land to build a school.

It marks an escalation in a dispute on several fronts between WA Labor and Mr Zempilas, who is running for the Liberals at the next election.

What's next?

The state government will force the City of Perth to hand over land for the new East Perth Primary School by changing long-held legislation, with the school to be running by 2029.

The WA government will move to seize City of Perth land to build a $150 million inner-city primary school, as part of a push to ease overcrowding in the public school system.

But the move has escalated an ongoing stoush between the Labor state government and the Perth Lord Mayor — and Liberal Party candidate — Basil Zempilas, who today accused the government of bullying and stealing.

What's this all about?

The state government and the City — led by Mr Zempilas — have been entangled in a dispute over the future of the planned primary school at the Queens Gardens car park in East Perth.

It would be the only public primary school in the Perth CBD area, at a time of overcrowding and aging education infrastructure in the inner-city suburbs.

Last year, the Lord Mayor "warmly welcomed" the East Perth proposal – vowing to conduct due diligence to ensure the complex business deal required to make it happen stacked up.

Since that time, Mr Zempilas announced he would run for the Liberal Party in the state seat of Churchlands at the 2025 election and in March the Perth council overwhelmingly voted against the initial school proposal.

At the time, Mr Zempilas said it was because the state was not willing to swap land or offer any money in return.

Now the decision appears to have been taken out of the council's hands with the government announcing today it would change the law to allow the deal to proceed.

It has promised to provide more than $4 million to the council to compensate for loss of revenue from the car park removal.

How has the Lord Mayor responded?

Mr Zempilas took to social media on Tuesday afternoon to accuse the government of bullying and stealing land.

"Every time this state government doesn't get its own way, they spit the dummy, and change legislation to bully their way through," he wrote on X. "They should not use their position of power to effectively steal people's land. West Australians should be horrified by this government's conduct. "Where will it stop? The arrogance of absolute power. "They are taking land they valued at $40 million off the ratepayers of the City of Perth — for nothing. This is outrageous."

Speaking at a press conference later in the day, a frustrated Mr Zempilas said the land was worth at least $40 million.

"We said, 'make us a fair offer' — they have never made us a fair offer," he said.

"$40 million would have been a fair offer."

Mr Zempilas said he had asked lawyers to consider what the council's options were.

The Lord Mayor said he received the notification from the WA government about their plan less than a minute before the Education and Planning Ministers held a press conference.

"Is 30 seconds notice before you make an announcement of this magnitude, is that negotiating in good faith? Or is that a bullying style of operating?" he said.

Mr Zempilas insisted he had never attempted to politicise the issue beyond representing the City of Perth.

"It's what our ratepayers expect, it's what our ratepayers deserve," he said.

What will the government do?

The little-known Chevron Hilton Act prevented the proposed location – owned by the City of Perth – from being used as anything other than a car park.

The state government is seeking to repeal the act, paving the way for it to acquire the location.

"It is City of Perth land, but held for public purposes," Education Minister Tony Buti said

"We are not building Club Med here, we're building an inner-city primary school."

Dr Buti said his government had been in "constant" negotiations with the city since April 2023.

"It became quite clear … [the City of Perth] were not moving from this position, so we need to build this primary school and that's why we've brought this legislation to parliament this week."

The state government is proposing to split up the land into three lots – two of which would be used for the primary school with the third retained by the City of Perth.

Dr Buti said the lot the council would retain was estimated to have a development potential of more than $27 million.

He's hoping the school will be open for the first day of term in 2029 and blamed the council for the delay.

"If the City of Perth had of come to the party for the offer that we made, an incredibly generous offer, the school could have opened in 2028," he said.

Planning Minister John Carey said it was a "fair and considered approach".

He said there was nothing the City of Perth could do to stop the acquisition "because the decision maker is actually a public authority, it's a public work," he said.

'Pure politics'

Both the WA Liberals and Labor state government have accused each other of playing politics over the issue.

For his part, Mr Carey pointed to other local governments giving up land for state developments.

"The City of Perth under the previous Barnett Government gave up control of land for Elizabeth Quay," he said.

"In this scenario I think we've just seen pure politics."

Liberal leader Libby Mettam returned serve, saying it was "appalling" and "mean spirited" to not give the City of Perth what she described as a a "fair deal".

"The Cook Labor government have the means to give ratepayers of Perth a fair deal during a cost of living crisis," she said on Tuesday afternoon.

"They have $170 million in the Perth parking levy and we have seen them spend billions of additional funds when it comes to projects such as Metronet.

"What the City of Perth have stated is a fair deal is $40 million for that land."

It's the latest development in a stoush between Mr Zempilas and the state government which has seen the Lord Mayor clash with ministers and the premier over issues such as parking, a redevelopment of the WACA ground and the closure of a women's refuge.

Although the election is not slated until early next year, political attack flyers are already appearing in letterboxes in the seat of Churchlands.

Mr Zempilas has also been touted as a potential future leader of the embattled WA Liberals if successful in Churchlands.

Voyager Point is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales. It is located approximately 24kms from the capital Sydney covering an area of 1.73 square kilometres. Voyager Point has a recorded population of 1668 residents and is within the Australian Eastern Daylight Time zone Australia/Sydney.

We have courses available for secondary students in both Australian and British curriculums, from Year 7 (approximately 12 years old) to Year 12 (approximately 17 years old).

You can only purchase courses under a Membership Plan .

We offer three Membership Plans :

• Humanities: AUD$29 per month (which totals AUD$348 per year). This gives  you access to – all History and Geography courses, for all year levels. Payment is collected every calendar month, (12 months) so that you only pay one month in advance. Your subscription can only be cancelled at the end of the month so you don’t pay for the next month if you don’t want to. 
• Core Subjects: AUD$39 per month (which totals AUD$468 per year). This gives  you access to – all English, Maths and Science courses, for all year levels. Payment is collected every calendar month, (12 months) so that you only pay one month in advance. Your subscription can only be cancelled at the end of the month so you don’t pay for the next month if you don’t want to.
• Full: AUD$59 per month (which totals AUD$708 per year). This gives  you access to – all subjects, for all year levels. Payment is collected every calendar month, (12 months) so that you only pay one month in advance. Your subscription can only be cancelled at the end of the month so you don’t pay for the next month if you don’t want to.

Our lessons are composed of 3 main parts:

• The video lesson – this is a high-quality recording of a lesson delivered using PowerPoint. The lesson contains educational videos, quizzes, matching activities, writing activities, reading activities and much more – all contained within the one video lesson. Students can pause this lesson at any time to complete the activities and then continue on when they’re ready. All the answers are provided to activities in the video, so parents don’t need to help their child – lessons are entirely self-directed.
• Extra Resources – this section of the lesson is devoted to any extra resources students might need, or homework worksheets. Resources are in PDF form and can be printed out and completed by the student. In most cases, answers are provided, but not always – it depend son the nature of the worksheet.
• The last component of our lessons is the quiz. Sometimes there is a quiz at the end of the lesson, sometimes this quiz is at the end of the unit. It depends on the subject.

Students are assessed in two ways:

• Formative assessment – these are quizzes and activities that students complete during the lesson, to check for understanding.
• Summative assessment – This is in the form of ‘End of Unit Quizzes’ – students complete these at the end of each course. Students must receive a passing grade of 50% to receive a Quiz Certificate and must complete all quizzes and lessons in a course to receive a Course Certificate.

When a parent registers with our site, they will be granted access to their personal account page which gives information about their registration date, what subscription plan they have signed up to and what courses their child is undertaking or completed, as well as their results for the End of Unit Quizzes that their child has completed.

We want parents to be happy with their choice to educate their child with the quality lessons provided by Voyager School.

So, the refund policy is as follows:

• For the purchase of individual courses – no refunds are available. We provide free lessons for parents and students to trial on our website, to enable them to judge the quality of our lessons before they agree to purchase an individual course.
• For monthly subscriptions – parents can cancel their monthly subscription at the end of the first month if they wish.
• For yearly subscriptions – subscriptions can be cancelled after the first month, however a cancellation fee of $100 applies.

We are absolutely Child Safe!

The owner of this site holds a Queensland Government Blue Card which certifies that they have undergone a Criminal Check by the Queensland Police.

The owner is also a registered teacher in Queensland.

Any staff who work for Voyager School also hold a Blue Card or similar card in their home state in Australia.

The teachers who create lessons for Voyager School are highly qualified and experienced.

Our lessons are created with sound pedagogical principles that incorporate the best methods for students learning online.

The teachers have experience teaching the curriculums that they design lessons for. We would never ask a teacher to design lessons in a subject that they hadn’t taught before.
