Up until now Trek ’s gravel lineup has been, well, a little lonely, comprised of just the Checkpoint. That bike is a generalist, something that an experienced rider can put big miles on and that a novice can still find approachable and easy to ride. But a one-size-fits-all approach inevitably means some people get left out.

While gravel was once mainly an adventure minded pursuit, the discipline has matured rapidly, and speed is now atop the minds of many, especially as gravel continues to overtake road racing in availability and popularity. Gravel is now where the fast riders are getting their fix, and they want a bike to match. Trek has finally followed many other brands in releasing a second gravel model, one that is all about speed and racing. It’s called the Checkmate, and it lives up to the race-focused billing.

Trek Checkmate Review

Checkmate Details

It was only a matter of time before Trek released a new gravel bike, especially because it has a gravel team, Trek-Driftless, that needs to be able to compete in the increasingly competitive gravel circuit. Trek now falls in line with the numerous other brands pursuing the go-fast gravel crowd — BMC, Canyon, Cervelo, and 3T to name a few. As you’d expect, that means there’s a whole lot of optimization for speed in this new bike.

The major nod to speed comes from the tube shapes, which are adapted from the newest generation Trek Madone released earlier this summer . The thing that might throw you off, however, is that the tube shapes don’t at all look aero — not in the way we’ve been trained to expect at least. The head tube area is narrowed like other aero bikes, but the square downtube is decidedly not aero-looking. Luckily the wind doesn’t care what you or I think about aerodynamic shapes, and Trek’s testing shows faster times with these tube shapes. As we’ll get to later, Trek has definitely done something right here in the speed department.

Trek Checkmate Review

Trek’s response to the fact that the Checkmate has less than standard looking aero tube shapes is that the frame is designed as part of a system alongside the Bontrager Aeolus 37V wheels and optimized around a 38 to 40 mm wide tire. The square downtube promotes the smooth transition of air from the front of the bike to the rear, channeling air around the entire bike in the most seamless way rather than considering each tube shape in isolation.

As those familiar with Trek might have been able to guess, the Checkmate gets an updated version of Trek’s IsoSpeed rear decoupler shock absorption system, which works to isolate the seatpost from the rest of the frame. The result is a bike that feels much smoother when riding seated than without it. It’s worked well on other Trek models for over a decade at this point, and it continues to work well for gravel in the Checkmate.

Trek Checkmate Review

Also pulled over from the new 8th generation Trek Madone is the one-piece carbon handlebar-stem. Like that squared-off downtube, the handlebar has a blunt shape, and it has a 3 cm flare from the hoods to the drops. There’s also a very slight outsweep. All in, it’s a very aggressive bar for gravel, one that suits the go-fast sensibilities of the new bike.

As a package, Trek claims the new bike is 5 minutes and 54 seconds faster than the outgoing Checkpoint SLR when ridden at 200 watts over Unbound 200. That translates to about 38 seconds per hour faster if you’re not trying to mix it up with the pros.

Trek Checkmate Review

But beyond aerodynamics, the other big story of this bike is weight, or lack thereof. Trek says the new Checkmate SLR 9 weighs 1 pound less than an equivalent Checkpoint SLR 9, thanks in part to the use of Trek’s top-level 800-Series OCLV Carbon. My size medium test bike weighed in at 7.53kg (16.60lbs) without pedals or bottle cages, making it easily one of the lightest gravel bikes I’ve ever tested.

Checkmate geometry

Trek offers the Checkmate in six sizes, XS to XL, a change from the purely numeric sizing of the previous Checkpoint.

Long and low might dominate the gravel space, but Trek is actually turning things back on the Checkpoint’s geometry. Compared to the previous Checkpoint SLR, the new Checkmate is slightly shorter in the reach department, but with similar stack heights size over size. In short, if you’re coming from the previous-generation Checkpoint, you’ll likely need to use a slightly longer stem than before to match your reach measurements.

Trek Checkmate Review

Handling geometry has been optimized for straight-line speed as well. The big news here is that the bike is shorter front to back, all in the name of making it more nimble feeling. So how is it optimized for straight-line speed? Mostly with a low, low, low 80 mm bottom bracket drop across all sizes.

On that note, Trek has opted to use just one fork rake offset across all sizes. The result is trail figures that range from a slack-feeling 70 mm on small sizes and a relatively quick 62 mm on the largest sizes.

Checkmate builds, specs, and pricing

The Trek Checkmate isn’t designed to be a generalist gravel bike, and its build range reflects that. There’s just one top-end SLR-grade carbon frame and two builds in total, one with SRAM Force and the other with SRAM Red, all with Trek’s new carbon bar/stem cockpit. Trek also offers a frameset option.

The Checkmate SLR 7 AXS with Force costs $8,299.99 USD / £8,500.00 / €8,999.00 / $10,999.99 AUD, while the SLR 9 AXS with Red costs $11,999.99 USD / £10,000.00 / €10,999.00 / $17,999.99 AUD. The Frameset is $3,999.99 USD.

Trek Checkmate Review

While there are just the two builds and four colorways, Trek also offers its ProjectOne customization program, allowing for component adjustments as well as custom paint. I was able to arrive at the exact fit I wanted by choosing 170mm crank arms as well as the cockpit option that worked for me, 39mm wide at the hoods, widening out to 42mm in the drops, with an 80mm stem. If you’re going to spend this much on a bike, you may as well have it built up with the exact spec you want rather than just taking whatever version happens to be in stock.

There are also custom paint options for the Checkmate including the new ICON Raw Lithos paint program available specifically on the Checkmate.

Trek Checkmate SLR 9 AXS in size medium; SRAM RED eTap AXS 1x Groupset (42T chainring, 10-46T cassette); Bontrager Aeolus 37V wheels; Bontrager Girona RSL 38 mm tires; Bontrage Aeolus RSL saddle; Trek integrated cockpit.

Gravel bikes have come a long way in a short time, and the Checkmate may demonstrate that better than any bike. It’s ridiculously light and fast, and, honestly, I’m tempted to leave the review at that. But, there’s more to say.

I was able to recreate my road bike position on this bike, and when I got on, it just felt right to my roadie sensibilities. Pretty soon I was eating up miles at a fast clip. For fast, non-technical gravel routes, the Checkmate is the perfect tool.

Trek Checkmate Review

As I hit the more technical gravel portions of my usual test route, the Checkmate’s optimization for fast, straight roads was most evident, resulting in some overrunning turns and fishtailing rather than smooth cornering. I was still having fun though, mind you. It feels wonderful on road descents, plus its aero prowess comes to the forefront on descents as it picks up speed rapidly.

Trek does a wonderful job with the small details on this bike, one of my favorite being the fastening system for the seatpost. While the bolt to tighten a seatpost can often be finicky, or made in a way that the bolt and clamp system can fall into the frame itself, this one stays securely in place, and is accessed through a little door held securely shut by a magnet. The seatpost also makes saddle adjustments quite easy, which is far from the norm with seatposts unfortunately.

Trek Checkmate Review

One small gripe I found with this bike is similar to one I have with the Domane in that my thighs are prone to rubbing against the top tube because the top tube–seat tube junction where the IsoSpeed decoupler is located is a little chunky. That said, it’s not a huge annoyance, and I’m glad to have IsoSpeed on this bike.

I like the number of mounting positions for bottle cages and bags inside the main triangle. Some will lament the lack of internal downtube storage, a feature increasingly found on gravel bikes, but it’s really not something I’ve missed that much, and the omission of downtube storage makes sense because this bike’s mission is pretty squarely on going fast and trimming out any features that add unneeded weight and complexity. Trek has created an elegant frame bag option for the bike as well to access mid-ride necessities like food.

Trek Checkmate Review

As I said before, it’s an incredibly light bike, helping it feel more like a performance road bike. The integrated aero cockpit borrowed from the Madone aero road bike adds to the performance road feel. I’m not completely sold on the super-narrow handlebar concept being pushed for fast gravel bikes nowadays, meant to put riders in the most aero position possible. However, through Trek’s ProjectOne bike customization program I was able to opt for the 39mm bar width rather than 37mm. I like the fit of these bars quite a bit. They’re comfortable enough in the tops, though I didn’t find myself spending much time there since I was so preoccupied with riding fast. And I love the shape of the drops with a slight flare, just enough for extra control on descents, but not more than you need for a bike that is meant for faster, less technical terrain.

I could easily see this bike being my one-bike option. If you’re not big on adventure riding and instead prioritize fast rides, this bike allows you to add more speed to the off-road portions of your rides, while still feeling plenty fast on-road. A second wheelset could easily transform it into a reasonably capable road bike.

Trek Checkmate Review

Trek’s entry to the fast-gravel segment is a win in my book. It doesn’t quite put the aero gravel competition in checkmate, but they’ve definitely been put on notice.

What to Look for in a Gravel Bike

Sizing geometry.

Many gravel bikes are similar to mountain bikes in terms of sizing (XS to XL) while some manufacturers will go off of cm sizing. Check for a sizing chart on the manufacturer's web site.

What you’ll notice with gravel bikes is they typically have a shorter reach and wider handlebars than a road bike. This design helps keep the rider’s weight more centered over the bike, allowing for more maneuverability and better handling on unstable terrain.

Gravel bikes are uniquely identified by their longer wheelbase and angled head tube, which gives a more stable ride in off-road conditions. The head tube is the piece of the frame that connects to the front fork and handlebar.

Typically, road bikes have a more upright headtube angle, lending to a quick and responsive feel while also putting the rider in a more aerodynamic position. A slack, or less steep head tube angle, will produce a more stable and forgiving ride that is better suited for uneven surfaces.

The majority of gravel bikes come with either a 1x or 2x drivetrain. With a 1x drivetrain, there is a single chainring on the crank. These drivetrains are simpler, lower maintenance, quieter, and less likely to drop the chain. The 2x drivetrain option consists of two chainrings and offers a larger range of gears and smaller jumps from one gear to the next. Many high-end gravel racing bikes maintain the 2x drivetrain to allow for small changes in gearing to maintain optimal cadence.

BKE

Wheels and Tires

Gravel bike tire sizing is similar to mountain bikes. Tires usually come in a 700c (29-inch) tire or a 650b (27.5-inch) tire option based on the rider's size and ability. The 650b sizing allows the tire to be wider, while the 700c will usually be thinner but move the bike faster, which is better suited for racing.

Keep in mind that gravel bikes can handle wider tires than road bikes, allowing for up to a 40- to 50mm wide tire. Choosing a wider tire lends itself to more grip and stability in dirt, gravel, or more technical terrain. Some frames can accommodate both tire sizes. Make sure to look for these types of customizations when shopping for a new ride.

Carbon frames are common for gravel bikes, making them light and easy to handle. For more intense bikepacking, many riders prefer a stronger steel or aluminum frame. Bikes comprised of these materials will hold up better to flying rocks, general wear and tear, and are less likely to break.

An aluminum frame will likely be the most budget friendly option, but you will sacrifice some of the smoothness and lightness that you get with a carbon frame. For gravel racing, the goal is to be fast and lightweight, making carbon or a custom titanium frame more common for those on the competitive circuit.

Accessories

One defining factor of a ‘gravel grinder’ is customization with accessories like bag mounts, multiple water bottle mounts, fender mounts, and rear rack mounts. These additions are major selling points for riders who enjoy bikepacking trips or all-day adventures.

Seatpost Options

Dropper seatposts have become the new standard for mountain biking, and some gravel bike manufacturers are now including them as well. A standard seatpost is adjustable by hand to the height of the rider. Most riders will lower their seatpost when riding downhill to allow more maneuverability and raise it again when climbing uphill.

A dropper seatpost or “dropper” features an integrated cable (or in some cases electronic) which allows the rider to quickly adjust the height of the saddle with the use of a lever, usually located on the handlebar. This saves time and eliminates the inconvenience of making manual adjustments. Keep in mind that this technology does add cost to the overall bike purchase.

How We Selected These Gravel Bikes

Based on my knowledge of many of these brands and types of bikes, I picked the gravel bikes below as the best ones to buy now. I evaluated these options based on factors like the quality of parts and components, value, and my experience riding similar models. This range of gravel bikes showcases options for a variety of purposes and budgets. Keep in mind that most of the bikes here are mid to high-end and not necessarily beginner gravel bikes.

Canyon Grizl CF SL 8 1BY

Grizl CF SL 8 1BY

The Canyon Grizl is an all-around great ride suited for all types of adventures, whether it be a casual after-work gravel ride, commuting around town, or a multi-day bikepacking adventure. The Shimano components and 1x drivetrain keep maintenance simple yet reliable, and the carbon frame helps dampen the bumps on rough trails.

The customizations for this bike allow for the addition of a dropper post, mudguards, a new suspension fork if desired, and ample configurations for water bottles and storage.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3L

Topstone Carbon 3L

Get ready for a great ride on your next bikepacking trip or long off-road day ride with this winner of a bike. A lightweight frame with Cannondale’s Kingpin suspension provides a smooth and comfortable ride. Customizations like the capability to run wider tires or integrate a dropper seat post make this a solid choice for a variety of riders and their preferred terrain.

Salsa Cutthroat C GRX 600 1X

Cutthroat C GRX 600 1X

Inspired by the Tour Divide—America’s longest mountain bike race—this bike can carry more and handle a wider range of terrain than just about any gravel bike out there. It's loaded with mounts for camping gear, bike accessories, and water bottles, plus it's rear-rack-compatible.

Salsa’s Class 5 Vibration Reduction System absorbs uneven terrain for a more comfortable ride. Though meant for burly rides, the Cutthroat still has a carbon frame and fork, plus a surprising turn of speed.

Canyon Grail CF SL 7

Grail CF SL 7

The Grail is one of the more unique gravel offerings with its stem flush with the top tube and signature two-tier cockpit which allows for four different hand positions. The bar’s flexing top section cushions the rider’s upper body when the ground is rough, but the stiffer drops provide control on fast downhills.

The Shimano groupset was specifically designed for gravel riding, and with Canyon’s value, you get excellent parts for the money.

Salsa Warbird C Force ETAP AXS Wide

Warbird C Force ETAP AXS Wide

You’ll definitely get your money’s worth out of this speedy bike. Salsa’s Warbird geometry was made for racing, with long top tubes paired with short stems resulting in more stability at high speeds. The 2x drivetrain system allows for smaller jumps in gearing to maintain that perfect cadence. Salsa offers an option for both 700c or 650b sized wheels while integrated mounts offer loads of storage.

Merlin Sandstone

Sandstone

Gravel riding is hard on equipment, and there’s no better material to stand up to gravel’s punishment than titanium. Strong and durable, this bike is built to last—and it doesn’t need paint, so there’s no need to worry about bag straps ruining the finish.

Titanium’s ride quality is another benefit, as it offers ample comfort for long and rough rides. Merlin offers custom builds and upgrade options on this solid frame, including rack and fender mounts, custom geometry, and internal cable routing.

Kona Libre CR DL

Libre CR DL

The Libre is a heavy-duty gravel bike—almost a drop bar mountain bike. This burley machine can handle tough off-road conditions with its lightweight yet durable frame and the full length TranzX dropper post.

No surprise that it’s from Kona, a company with deep roots in mountain biking. With tall and wide bars and provisions for a dropper post, the Libre DL is ready for the rowdiest gravel adventures.

Salsa Warroad C Ultegra

Warroad C Ultegra

This is how Salsa makes an all-road bike. The Warroad is Salsa’s fastest gravel rig, with a stiff frame and responsive handling that makes it livelier than the company’s other bikes.

It has all-road geometry, with a long offset fork and slack head tube angle, plus Salsa’s Class 5 Vibration Reduction System. It doesn’t have the cargo carrying capacity of the Cutthroat, but it more than makes up for that in speed and handling while still providing customized options for water bottle and rack mounts. It’s also able to accept a dropper post and rear rack.

Invest in a good bike rack! If you plan to spend some money on a bike and plan to use it on a regular basis, make sure you can easily transport it.

I suggest a hitch mount rack with trays. Make sure that the bike fits snug into the tray when locked in. You don't want your bike swaying or moving around when driving. Avoid transporting your bike when it would be rubbing up against other bikes or moving around in a truck bed, for example. This can damage components on your bike and end up in costly repairs.

What is the sweet spot for tire size?

The tire size for a gravel bike usually ranges from 35- to 50mm. Depending on the type of terrain you prefer to ride, the size can make a big impact. A larger, or wider tire will be a better fit for chunkier gravel or uneven terrain, whereas a thinner tire is better suited for smoother, paved surfaces.

You can run a wider tire at lower air pressure. This gives the tire some play and dampens the impact over rocks, roots or other uneven terrain. However, with a wide tire at low pressure you'll also lose speed, as the tire won't traverse the ground as fast or efficiently.

If you mainly use your gravel bike on paved or smoother, compact gravel roads, then a smaller tire with higher air pressure is a better bet. When purchasing a gravel bike, make sure that the frame will support the tire size you are looking for.

What about tread patterns—what should I look for?

Gravel bike tires are unique. As a hybrid between a mountain bike and a road bike, tire tread definitely plays a role. The term "gravel" has a wide range of meaning for many riders. Many people ride their gravel bikes on dirt, pavement, mud, single track, loose gravel, and everything in between.

The tread on a bike tire provides grip and security. Beefier or more textured tread will provide more grip, while smoother or smaller tread will carry more speed but feel less secure on chunkier terrain.

When selecting gravel bike tires, you should take both size and tread into consideration. Most brands will provide a clear description on what terrain the tire is best suited for.

Advice How to choose a budget gravel bike

Spanning the gap between road and mountain bikes , gravel and adventure bikes are versatile options that excel on bridleways, byways, dirt roads and singletracks. Gravel bikes also perform incredibly well as commuter or winter road bikes too.  But finding the right bike for your needs can be a daunting and costly task... Bike prices have increased significantly over the past few years and it's difficult to find performance models which come in below $1,500 (except if you're looking at   hybrid bikes of course) With that in mind, we've hand-picked a variety of bikes covering a range of price points and split this guide into budget gravel bikes that cost below $1,500 and those around $2,000 or less. If you've got the gravel bug and the budget to go beyond this range, then by all means, check out our complete gravel and adventure bikes guide.

Triban GRVL 120

Best low-priced option

Despite its remarkably low price, the  Triban GRVL 120 is more than capable of being ridden off-road, making it ideal for budget-conscious riders or anyone who wants to try gravel riding without splashing out a fortune.

Cannondale Topstone 4

Best for frame quality

A relaxed riding position and plenty of mounts mark the Topstone 4 out as an ideal long-distance companion. Well-considered components keep the costs down without spoiling functionality, but its geometry is better suited to off-road trails than road sections.

Boardman ADV 8.6

An excellent budget option, Boardman's ADV 8.6 is tubeless-ready and has a wide-range 9-speed drivetrain ready for off-road exploration. Although the frame lacks a bit of compliance, the included rack and mudguard mounts mean that it can double up as a commuter or winter bike.

Specialized Diverge E5

Best for versatility

Huge tire clearance, a carbon fork and a plethora of luggage mounts make the ever-popular Diverge a sure-fire winner. In this guise, the gearing is aimed at easier trails and lanes rather than big hills.

GT Grade Elite

Best for frame compliance

GT's iconic triple-triangle design provides a smooth ride thanks to the lengthened seat stays, and the wheels are tubeless-ready albeit shod with dry weather tires. The 8-speed drivetrain works well enough but is orientated more to road use and the brakes are a bit sub-par.

Triban GRVL 520

Best for load-lugging

Decent value and good tire clearance on offer from the Triban GRVL 520. The geometry held it back a little off-road though and the supplied tires slowed it down on-road.

Below is our pick of the best budget adventure road bikes and gravel bikes we've tested. Read on for more tips on what to look for when shopping for a budget gravel bike to help you venture off the beaten track. If you're considering your first gravel bike we've also created a dedicated guide on what to look out for.

Best low priced option

The Triban 120 is a good entry point to gravel

1. Triban GRVL 120

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Designed for mechanical simplicity, the Triban GRVL 120 might hit the mark if you're just looking to dip a toe into gravel riding without spending too much cash. The ride position is upright and there's a fork with carbon legs and an alloy steerer.

Despite the low price, you still get a 10-speed single chainring groupset with plenty of range and a clutched derailleur. The bike also comes specced with tubeless-ready wheels with Hutchinson 38mm tubeless-ready tires. The 38mm max clearance is quite narrow though and we found that the Triban is better suited to both moderate trails and modest distances rather than more demanding terrain. However, at this price, the Triban GRVL 120 is hard to beat.

Cannondale Topstone 4 on a yellow background

Cannondale Topstone 4 has a quality frame

2. Cannondale Topstone 4

Cannondale's gravel bikes have a well-deserved reputation for quality features and the alloy Topstone 4 delivers frame-wise, along with savvy component choices to keep the price down. It's built for comfort rather than speed and provides a relaxed riding position. Plentiful mounts make it a good option for the bikepacker too.

The 10-speed single-ring drivetrain comes from Microshift, while the mechanical disc brakes are from Promax. We found that both work well, even if they're not brands that are front of mind when it comes to components. There's the flexibility to add a dropper seatpost with internal cables if you want to tackle more rugged terrain, too.

Off-road, the OutFront geometry works well, but we did find the Topstone 4 sluggish on tarmac.

Boardman ADV 8.6 on a yellow background

Boardman's ADV 8.6 aims to bring a quality ride at an affordable price

3. Boardman ADV 8.6

The Boardman ADV 8.6 offers all you need to get started gravel riding. It has lower gearing to keep you moving off-road and tubeless-ready wheels and tires, so you can avoid being too troubled by punctures. Although the frame is a little firm, setting up tubeless will take the harshness out of the ride.

There's plenty of grip in a variety of conditions and Boardman's saddle and bars are comfortable too. You can add a rack and mudguards for commuting or bikepacking. The only hiccup was the exposed gear cables, which we found were prone to collect dirt, leading to degraded shift performance.

Specialized Diverge E5 on a white background

The Diverge E5 offers versatility and plenty of tire clearance

4. Specialized Diverge E5

The lowest spec of the Specialized Diverge E5 gets a decent 8-speed Shimano groupset, although it leans a little more towards road than off-road use, with a large chainring that probably won't see you spending much time in the top gear.

You get a full-carbon fork with the alloy frame, which provides a stable geometry for off-road antics, paired with a shorter stem length for steerability - a typical gravel set-up. There's plenty of tire clearance at the rear thanks to the solid chainstay section behind the bottom bracket.

Like the Cannondale Topstone, there are loads of luggage mounts, including those on the fork legs, so the Diverge E5 is good to go for bikepacking adventures as well as playing around off-road.

The Diverge E5 is also offered in a Comp build. It's $500 over our budget here but if you can find the extra cash you'll get Futureshock front suspension and a SRAM Apex 1x groupset with hydraulic brakes. We found that both additions really improved the ride quality, with the Future Shock reducing the discomfort in our wrists after longer rides on harsher terrain, while the Apex braking was excellent regardless of the conditions.

GT Grade Elite on a red background

The Grade Elite has GT's signature triple triangle design

5. GT Grade Elite

GT uses its triple triangle design in the Grade Elite, where the seat stays are lengthened for extra compliance. It leads to a comfortable, stable ride.

The gearing works well, although with a clunk when shifting due to the wide gaps in ratios in the eight-speed cassette. We weren't impressed by the brakes though, as these lacked bite and power, particularly for trickier descents.

Wheels and tires from WTB were good for drier rides and can be set up tubeless, giving plenty of grip and complementing the bike's quality handling.

Best for load lugging

Triban GRVL 520 side on view with green background

Triban GRVL 520 has easy maintenance external cabling

6. Triban GRVL 520

Another entry from Decathlon's Triban brand, the GRVL 520 has an alloy frameset paired with a carbon-bladed fork with mounts for additional bottle cages. Cables run externally but with full outers.

There are two specs, one with an 11-speed 48/32t subcompact groupset and 700c wheels, and the one tested with SRAM Apex 1x 11-speed and 650b wheels.

We found the wheels and 47mm tires a little sluggish on the road and the ride a little harsh. It fared better on more technical off-road terrain, although we didn't feel it was quite the match for some of the competition.

Kona Rove AL 650 on a white background

Kona's Rove AL is a reliable workhorse for gravel adventures and commuting

5. Kona Rove AL 650

Based in Bellingham, Washington, Kona is no stranger to beefy touring bikes and now gravel bikes. It's got a reputation for no-nonsense, robust bikes with budget spec options that are durable and hassle-free.

This entry-level Rove is one of their aluminum alloy offerings and is available in either 700c or 650b builds at the same price. With chunky 47mm WTB Venture tires fitted and mounts on the fork legs in addition to standard mudguard and rack eyelets, the Rove is a great choice for anyone wanting to dip their toe into the world of bikepacking.

Trek Domane AL2 Disc on a white background

Trek's Domane is technical a road bike with clearance for wider tires it can handle some rough stuff

6. Trek Domane AL 2 Disc

If you feel like you are more of an adventure touring or all-road rider the Trek Domane AL line of frames is a good fit. The endurance bike geometry works well both on and off-road and there's clearance for tires up to 35mm. In today's world 35mm isn't big but it's more than enough to tackle well-groomed gravel roads.

For a lot of people, this makes perfect sense as a first, or only, bike. Everything that makes it capable of heading off-road also makes it versatile. There are mounts for racks and fenders if you want to do some bikepacking or commuting, and weekend use just means changing tires.

If your budget stretches a bit further, there are three alloy Domane models with higher-spec finishing kit in the range.

Marin NICASIO+ on a white background

Marin's Nicasio proves that when it comes to gravel steel can also be real

7. Marin Nicasio+

One of the few steel gravel bikes that you'll find on a budget of less than $1,500, the Marin Nicasio+ is a great choice for budding bikepackers. There are loads of water bottle cage mounts, and you'll have plenty of options for storage alongside traditional rack and guard mounts too.

It comes with a single-ring groupset, making for a simpler mechanical set-up, with plenty of gear range and a clutched derailleur, although with only 9 speeds, there are quite large jumps between ratios. The Nicasio+ is fitted with 47mm WTB Horizon tires, so there's lots of rubber between you and the trail for extra comfort and grip.

Vitus Substance V-2 on a white background

The Vitus Substance comes equipped with Shimano's reliable Sora groupset

10. Vitus Substance V-2

There's a lot more to the Vitus Substance V-2 than just a snazzy paint job to make it a great budget gravel bike. There are loads of mounting options for bags and TRP Spyre mechanical disc brakes which will help control your speed on testing off-road descents.

Vitus has opted for a good gravel gearing set up, with a sub-compact double (46/30T) paired with an 11-34T cassette for plenty of low speed gearing to get you up steep ascents while spinning in the saddle, while still giving an adequate on-tarmac turn of speed.

The finishing kit is Vitus' own, including Vitus' flared Adventure bars with a very subtle 3° flare.

Canyon Grail 6 on a white background

The Grail 6 delivers an impressive range of components including a Shimano GRX groupset

11. Canyon Grail 6

Coming in seven sizes, the Grail from German direct sales brand Canyon has a cracking spec for the price. That includes a Shimano GRX 400 10-speed gravel groupset and DT Swiss wheels with Continental Terra Trail 40mm tires. It's nice to get a full Shimano GRX groupset including its hydraulic disc brakes for assured stopping power. The two smallest sizes swap in 650b wheels for the 700c wheels on the larger bikes, for improved geometry and less toe overlap with the front wheel.

It's a bike designed for fast gravel riding and to take you back onto tarmac when you need to link up gravel sections; for more off-road riding, greater tire clearance and extra load-lugging potential there's the Canyon Grizl 6 for the same price.

Giant Revolt 2 on a white background

Giant's Revolt 2 allows you to adjust the chainstay length to match the demands of your ride

12. Giant Revolt 2

The Giant Revolt comes with a flip chip in its rear triangle that lets you keep the chainstay length short for a more lively ride on tires up to 42mm or lengthen them for massive 53mm tire clearance.

Giant uses its compact frame geometry and fits its D-Fuse D-shaped seatpost to help increase saddle comfort, while a carbon fork adds damping to the front end. If you have a bit more in your budget, the Giant Revolt 1 offers 10-speed Shimano GRX gearing and hydraulic braking while still coming in just below our upper price limit.

Liv Devote 1 on a white background

Liv's Devote is a women specific gravel offering

13. Liv Devote 1

The women's equivalent of the Revolt is the Devote, from Giant's women's-specific Liv brand. As well as the Devote 1, featured here, there's a Devote 2 with a similar spec to the Revolt 2.

The Devote 1 comes with smaller frame size options than the Revolt, but you don't get the flip chip variable geometry. There's still clearance for 45mm tires and the bike is delivered with Giant's tubeless set-up. The higher spec of the Devote 1 gets you a 10-speed Shimano GRX RX400 gravel bike groupset, complete with hydraulic disc brakes.

How to choose a budget gravel bike

What frame material should i expect in a budget gravel bike.

Inexpensive frames are sometimes steel but mostly aluminum. Metal frames are robust, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture. Alloy frames tend to be a little lighter than budget steel frames but steel is easier to repair if you find yourself in a remote region of the world.

Even at this price point, you will often find a carbon fork, which along with the wide tires will help take some of the road buzz out of your ride.

Whatever material you end up with be sure to protect it for use with bags. Use a strong, clear, adhesive material anywhere that a bag will come in contact with the frame. Even the best bags will wear through the paint.

What groupset and shifting should I expect on a budget gravel bike?

At this price point, there are a few different options on the market, from SRAM's Apex 1X groupset to double chainrings or even triples. Budget Shimano Sora or Claris options help to keep costs down and simplify shifting with 8 or 9-speed setups. These are road groupsets, rather than specifically gravel ones though, so they don't have a clutch to help keep the chain in place on bumpy terrain.

A gravel-specific groupset like Shimano GRX or SRAM Apex 1 will give you a better set-up for gravel riding than a road groupset, but is not often specced on lower-priced gravel bikes, as it's more expensive than 8 or 9-speed options.

Often gravel bikes will come with a single chainring set-up with a wide-range cassette to give you the range you need. It's a good option, but better with an 11 or 12-speed set-up; with the cheaper groupsets with a smaller number of sprockets, you may find the jumps between gears a bit wide.

The other option to give you lower gear ratios is a subcompact two-chainring groupset. Subcompact usually means either a 48/32t or 46/30t chainset, rather than the 50/34t that's typical on road bikes. The advantage of a two-chainring groupset is that you get more gear ratios, and smaller jumps as you move up the cassette.

SRAM Apex 1 groupset

What brakes should I expect on a budget gravel bike?

Mechanical disc brake setups are almost always specced at the sub-£1000/$1500 mark. These are less costly than hydraulic disc brakes but still yield benefits over rim braking systems, particularly for gravel bikes. Disc brakes make it possible to fit big tires and wide wheels without any decrease in braking power.

Even cable-actuated disc brakes offer greater power and modulation than cantilever brakes. Disc brakes will also save your wheelsets from wearing out in mucky conditions, unlike rim brakes.

Although not as powerful as hydraulic disc brakes, cable-operated brakes can be easier to maintain. Future upgrades are also always possible.

What wheels and tires should I expect on a budget gravel bike?

Even at this cheaper end of the gravel bike market, you can now choose between standard 700c wheels or smaller 650b wheels . A lot of these bikes will be compatible with both sizes too, so you can change as you like or even have a pair of each with different tires fitted.

For easier terrain or longer rides where efficiency is key 700c wheels are a good choice. Choose 650b wheels to run wider, chunkier tires for more technical terrain. The larger volume tires add extra comfort over rooty and rocky trails.

Tires make a huge difference to the quality of your ride and are also an easy element to switch out when you buy a bike. Having said that, it's good to see so many great tires fitted as standard, even at a budget level.

For mud and loose gravel look for more aggressive tread on the center line and shoulders. Slick, or file tread, tires will be faster for road, dry conditions and less technical terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that entry-level wheels can come at the cost of greater weight. Heavier wheels take more energy to get moving and can feel sluggish. When you're convinced that gravel riding is for you, wheels are a good first upgrade.

What finishing kit should I expect on a budget gravel bike?

Many budget gravel bikes come from brands that offer their own in-house finishing kit, for example, Triban's seatpost, stem, handlebars , bar tape and saddle . This helps to keep costs low, and although not the flashiest, these parts tend to be well-made and robust. Finishing kit is easy to swap out if you fancy an update at any point in the future too.

Handlebars are the one piece of the finishing kit you might want to really pay attention to. Flared bars of around 12° can give a more stable position in the drops for rough descents. They also accommodate bikepacking bags more easily.

Best budget gravel bikes

What are the best upgrades for my budget gravel bike?

Once you're happy that your new gravel bike is the best steed you've ever owned, you might want to consider a few upgrades to make the ride even more enjoyable. If you've got a little over $1,500/£1,000 to spend initially, you might consider these features for your first bike too.

SRAM Rival Hydraulic Disc Lever

SRAM Rival Hydraulic Disc Lever

Although it sounds strange, better braking can actually help you go faster. With more powerful braking from hydraulic disc brakes, you can stop faster. With great braking performance at your fingertips, you'll have more confidence to let rip on the descents.

If you don't already have flared handlebars on your bike, consider this upgrade for confident descending and more room for bikepacking bags up front.

Your wheels can make a huge difference to the quality of the ride, and unfortunately, at lower price points the quality of these can suffer. Upgrading your original wheelset to a lighter and higher quality build can make the world of difference.

Don't feel stuck with the tires that come on your bike. Your preferred terrain and conditions might need something different. Experiment with different volumes and tread types until you find some that work for you. You may need a different set of tires for summer and winter riding to get the most out of your budget gravel bike, swapping between them to compensate for the changes in trail conditions.

Setting up your wheels tubeless can be one of the biggest (although not always the easiest) upgrades to your bike out of the box. With no tube to worry about you can run lower pressure for better traction and a more comfortable ride. Tubeless sealant can also seal small punctures before you even know something happened.

What extras do I need for gravel riding?

If you're looking to keep your spending on your new gravel bike under control, don't forget to budget for the extras you'll need.

Although you can ride on a set of the best flat pedals , it's easiest to ride off-road on clipless pedals, but you need an MTB-style two-bolt system rather than a road-going three-bolt one. The best pedals for off-road riding are two-sided for easier engagement, clear mud well and are robust.

You'll need a matching pair of two-bolt shoes for gravel riding , as the recessed cleats and grippy soles are essential when you need to walk your bike.

Don't forget to factor in a helmet , summer gloves in case you take a tumble and winter gloves to keep your hands from freezing. If you don't want to ride in road gear, there's also a good selection of gravel bike clothing for more versatility or a more relaxed look. Finally don't forget sunglasses to help keep dirt and bugs out of your eyes.

If you're planning to use your gravel bike for bikepacking or even for commuting, there's a whole range of bikepacking bags to make packing and carrying easier. We've got a comprehensive list of everything you need to go bikepacking - there's quite a lot of it.

You'll also run through consumables quicker off-road than on, so you'll need spare inner tubes and a puncture repair kit or, if you've swapped to tubeless, tubeless sealant and tubeless repair tools . You'll also need to clean your bike and drivetrain more often and you'll need plenty of chain lube .

Do gravel bikes need suspension forks?

It might seem like a silly question but as riders continue to push the limits of what's possible suspension forks on gravel bikes are becoming more common as seen with Specialized's Diverge STR—a full suspension gravel bike. But if you're looking for a budget gravel bike, the answer is: probably not. The vast majority of gravel bikes are still rigid and perform just fine. We'd only suggest looking into suspension forks for your gravel bike if you've got the budget and you're tackling more challenging terrains.

Where we've been able to link to a review, it means that we've put the bike through its paces. This means we've ridden it across a variety of terrain to assess its suitability for gravel riding, considering a range of factors such as its ride quality, comfort over longer distances and its suitability for alternative uses such as winter road riding and commuting. This being a 'budget' guide, value for money was a key consideration too.

Our testers are all experienced gravel riders and include our Tech Features Editor Stefan Abram, who's undertaken several multi-day bikepacking adventures both in the UK and abroad.

Where we haven't yet had the chance to review an item, we're still confident in recommending it as one of the best, because we either know the brand really well and have probably tested another product or the previous version and can still happily recommend it as one of the best.

The 8 Best Gravel Bikes Under $1500 to Consider in 2024

Profile picture of Petr Minarik - the founder of cyclistshub.com

CyclistsHub is supported by its readers. We may receive a commission if you buy products using our links.

These are the best gravel bikes for under $1500 . I researched the gravel bikes available in this price range and rated them based on my gravel bike scoring system , which evaluates their price-value ratios.

I also talked with friends and store owners and asked them for tips on choosing a gravel bike and what to expect at this price range.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Choose a gravel bike with clearance and geometry for the type of riding you want to do. For example, State Bicycle 6061 Black Label ALL-ROAD is ideal for rough terrain thanks to its wide tire clearance but slower on paved roads. Marin Gestalt 2 , on the other hand, is suitable for smooth roads and light terrain thanks to its aggressive road bike-like geometry and narrower tires.

Below, you learn more about these bikes, how to choose a gravel bike, what to expect in the below $1500 price range, and more.

Let’s dive in!

What Are the Best Gravel Bikes Under $1500?

The best gravel bikes under $1500 have to fit your riding preference. If you want to do bike touring, you should consider getting a touring/adventure gravel bike that is compatible with accessories like racks, panniers, fenders, etc., and has a more relaxed endurance geometry.

On the other hand, if you prefer speed and racing, look for gravel bikes with a more aggressive geometry.

Read the buyer’s guide section if you are new to gravel bikes. You learn everything you need to know before choosing a gravel bike at the below $1500 price range.

The Best Gravel Bikes Under $1500

The following selection includes bikes ideal for gravel biking , touring , racing , and light and rough terrain .

NOTE: All bikes below are compatible with 650b and 700c wheels.

State Bicycle 6061 Black Label ALL-ROAD (Best Gravel Bike for Rough Terrain)

Copper State Bicycle 6061 Black Label ALL-ROAD gravel bike with disc brakes.

Comfort   5/5 | Handling   4/5 | Components   4/5 | Build Quality   5/5 | Accessories Compatibility   4/5 | Weight   3/5 | Design   4/5 | WEIGHTED OVERALL SCORE   4.2/5

Main Features

  • Ideal bike for rough terrain
  • Customizable wheels & accessories
  • Highly versatile
  • Mechanical disc brakes
  • Partially internal cable routing

Technical Specifications

  • Frame material : Aluminum
  • Weight: n/a
  • Gearing : State Bicycle Co. All-Road 1x11spd (11-42 cassette)
  • Wheel size : 650b or 700c
  • Tires: Vittoria Terreno Dry Tires (Tubeless Compatible) – 47c [650b] or Vittoria Terreno Zero Tires (Tubeless Compatible) – 38C [700c]

State Bicycle 6061 is the opposite of ADV 1.1 . This bike was created for wild off-road riding. Before purchasing, you can choose whether to buy it with 650b or 700c wheels (or both).

Wide, knobby tires provide enough grip for bumpy roads, singletracks, forest roads, gravel, mud, and similar terrains.

However, with this bike, you don’t have to limit yourself to the terrain only. It can also handle paved roads (especially with 700c wheels and narrower tires).

1X shifting is very intuitive. Its small disadvantage is the limited number of gears. However, the 11-42 cassette provides a wide range for steep hills and flats.

Another advantage is that you can opt for accessories such as pedals, saddle type, water bottle cage, and lock, so you do not have to buy them separately.

You can learn more about this bike in my State Bicycle ALL-ROAD 6061 review .

Trek Domane AL 3 Disc (Best Gravel Bike for Light Terrain)

Green Trek Domane AL 3 Disc gravel bike with disc brakes and Shimano Sora groupset.

Comfort   3/5 | Handling   4/5 | Components   3/5 | Build Quality   5/5 | Accessories Compatibility   4/5 | Weight 2/5 | Design   4/5 | WEIGHTED OVERALL SCORE   3.5/5

  • Ideal bike for light terrain
  • High built quality
  • Carbon fork
  • 3 bottle cage-ready spots
  • Inbuilt speed sensor
  • Weight: 23.24 lb (10.54 kg)
  • Gearing : Shimano Sora R3000 2x9spd (11-32 cassette)
  • Wheel size : 700c
  • Tires: Bontrager R1 Hard-Case Lite, wire bead, 60 TPI, 700x32c

The Domane line is a line of road endurance bikes from Trek. However, thanks to the wider tire clearance and 32mm tires, this road bike became a fast gravel bike ideal for riding many miles while maintaining your fitness level.

Take advantage of its sporty geometry and the Trek design team’s decades of experience.

Compared to other bikes in this selection, the Trek Domane AL 3 Disc is relatively lightweight, even though it is equipped with more affordable components and its frame is aluminum. So, be aware of its weight limit of 275 lb (125 kg).

Its carbon fork makes the ride more comfortable because it absorbs many vibrations.

You can also track your speed, distance, etc., with the built-in DuoTrap S sensor that is compatible with smartphones and head units (it uses Bluetooth connectivity).

Trek Domane AL 3 Disc is compatible with rear racks, 3 bottle cages, and other useful accessories for gravel bikes.

This means you can equip your bike with the cargo necessary for long-distance trips.

These features make the Domane AL 3 Disc an ultimate road/gravel bike. You can also check out this comparison of Trek Domanes and Checkpoints to see how these two bike families differ.

Co-op Cycles ADV 2.2

White Co-op Cycles ADV 2.2 gravel bike with disc brakes.

Comfort   4/5 | Handling   4/5 | Components   5/5 | Build Quality   4/5 | Accessories Compatibility   4/5 | Weight 2/5 | Design   4/5 | WEIGHTED OVERALL SCORE   3.9/5

  • Compatible with a rear rack
  • Frame material: Aluminum
  • Weight: 23.4 lb (10.61 kg) [M]
  • Gearing: Shimano GRX 2x10spd (11-36T cassette)
  • Wheel size: 700c
  • Tires: WTB Nano Comp 700c x 40mm

Co-op Cycles ADV 2.2 is an improved version of its predecessor ADV 2.1 . Although it slightly exceeds the $1,500 mark, its price is fully justifiable. Let me explain why.

It has 700c wheels and 40mm tires that handle light gravel or dirt roads and are fast on the tarmac.

Thanks to Shimano GRX 2x10spd, you can use one of the 20 gears (this is more than the previous version). This makes the jumps between gears smaller, and you will always find the right gear.

You don’t have to worry about stopping when needed, even in the rain, because the mechanical disc brakes will provide enough stopping power.

The main downside of ADV 2.2 is that it has no additional slots for bike bottles except the standard two.

The Co-op Cycles ADV 2.2 is perfect for maintaining fitness, training, commuting, and recreation.

You can learn more about this bike in my Co-op ADV 2.2 gravel bike review and Co-op ADV bikes comparison .

Cannondale Topstone 4

Black Cannondale Topstone 4 gravel bike with mechanical disc brakes.

Comfort   3/5 | Handling   5/5 | Components   4/5 | Build Quality   5/5 | Accessories Compatibility   5/5 | Weight 1/5 | Design   4/5 | WEIGHTED OVERALL SCORE   3.8/5

  • Compatible with racks and fenders
  • Gears for steep climbs
  • Weight: 23 lb (10.4 kg) [M]
  • Gearing: microSHIFT Advent X 1x10spd (11-48T cassette)
  • Tires: WTB Riddler Comp, 700c x 37 mm

Are you looking for an affordable gravel bike from a well-known brand? Then check out the Cannondale Topstone 4.

It’s designed for versatility and adventure. It has a lightweight aluminum frame and a carbon fork, which provides a smooth and responsive ride.

It has only 10 gears but a wide range, allowing you to tackle steep hills and flats easily.

The Topstone 4 also has a relaxed geometry, which puts you in a comfortable and upright riding position, making it ideal for all-day adventures.

You will also appreciate the up to 40mm wide tire clearance. This allows you to run a wider range of tires for different conditions.

The additional mounts allow you to carry multiple water bottles, fenders, and racks. This makes it a great bike for bikepacking, touring, or commuting.

It’s a shame the Topstone 4 comes with mechanical disc brakes, not hydraulic ones. But those are rare in this price range. The mechanical ones are still fine for beginners.

Overall, the Cannondale Topstone 4 is a good option for anyone looking to explore new roads, whether paved or not.

The Polygon Bend R2 is around $1000, so you will have money left for other accessories.

Its relaxed geometry and lowered top tube make it suitable for women and people who prefer an upright riding position or are less flexible.

Like most gravel and adventure bikes, R2 is compatible with front and rear racks, so you can easily extend your storage capacity.

Polygon Bend R2 comes with 650b wheels and wide tires, allowing you to tackle rougher terrains. Unfortunately, the wheels are not tubeless-compatible.

Another disadvantage of the Polygon Bend R2 is its high weight compared to other gravel bikes in this roundup.

  • Wheel size:  650b or 700c
  • Tires: Teravail Washburn, 650b x 47 mm or Teravail Washburn, 700c x 38 mm

The relaxed geometry is the most notable feature of the Salsa Journeyer 650b and 700c bikes.

It was designed with comfort and stability in mind. So, continue reading if you are not super flexible and appreciate the more upright position. Additionally, this geometry results in better stability, especially in descents.

Journeyer, as the name suggests, is also perfect for bikepacking. It has multiple additional mounts, so you can easily mount bags, panniers, or fenders.

You can choose the option with the 650b or 700c wheels, depending on what terrain you prefer. Get the 650b wheels for rough terrain and 700c for light terrain ( learn more ).

It’s a shame it only has a Shimano Sora groupset with 2×9 gears and mechanical disc brakes. However, you also pay for the brand. Salsa is well-known and respected.

Marin Gestalt 2

Marin Gestalt 2 gravel bike with disc brakes.

Comfort   3/5 | Handling   4/5 | Components   3/5 | Build Quality   4/5 | Accessories Compatibility   4/5 | Weight  n/a | Design   4/5 | WEIGHTED OVERALL SCORE   3.7/5

  • Compatible with racks and other accessories
  • Gearing : Shimano Tiagra 2x10spd (11-34 cassette)
  • Tires: WTB Exposure Comp, 700 x 32mm, Wire Bead

If I had to pick a bike based on its design, Marin Gestalt 2 would be my favorite. But, of course, we all have slightly different tastes, so I will focus on its other features.

You will especially appreciate its riding characteristics on paved surfaces. It is equipped with 700c wheels with 32 mm tires. Therefore, Gestalt 2 is not far from a road bike.

However, the frame offers tire clearance for 700 x 35c tires. These are ideal for the terrain because they provide enough grip and comfort.

Marin Gestalt 2 offers 20 gears, so you won’t have a problem climbing a hill and descending quickly.

Of course, this bike is compatible with racks, fenders, and other bike accessories. Thanks to them, you can go on a long trip without worrying about food, water, spare clothes, etc.

So, if you want a nice-looking, well-equipped, and versatile bike, go for it. Or, you can check out the more affordable Gestalt 1 with lower-end components.

Gravel bikes are popular thanks to their versatility. You can use them to commute to and from work, explore your countryside, bike packing, for adrenaline rides in the terrain, or any other ride.

Make sure you choose your next gravel bike depending on your riding style and the terrain you want to ride in (read the How to Choose a Gravel Bike section to learn more).

I selected the best gravel bike from 3 main categories (for bike touring, rough terrain, and light terrain):

State Bicycle 6061 Black Label ALL-ROAD is the best gravel bike for rough terrain . You can opt in for 650b wheels (tubeless compatible) with wide 47c tires to provide enough grip and comfort in rough terrain.

Trek Domane AL 3 Disc is the best gravel bike for light terrain . It was designed as a road bike – just with wider tire clearance. It’s a synonym for speed, aerodynamics, and pure joy.

Co-op Cycles ADV 2.2 is a great choice for bike touring thanks to its compatibility with accessories like panniers, making it the perfect bike for long journeys.

How to Choose a Gravel Bike?

Gravel bikes (also called adventure bikes) come with different frames, components, wheels, etc.

To help you choose the best gravel bike under $1500, I will explain in the following part what you can expect in this price range and what to be aware of when choosing your new gravel bike.

You can also read the full-length guide on How to Choose a Gravel Bike .

Frame Material

The frame is the spine of every bicycle. Gravel bike frames are mostly made from aluminum, steel, or carbon.

  • Aluminum gravel bikes are the most affordable because aluminum is relatively cheap and easier to manufacture than steel or carbon frames. Aluminum frames are not as stiff as steel or carbon frames but are lighter than steel frames. Aluminum gravel bikes are ideal for beginners or people with a tight budget. The biggest downside of aluminum frames is that they fatigue and corrode over time.
  • Steel gravel bikes are the heaviest. Steel frames are stiff and durable. This means they provide good power transfer, won’t crack after a first crash, and last longer than aluminum frames. I also like their ‘retro’ look and their uniqueness. Steel frames can be repaired relatively easily.
  • Carbon gravel bikes are very stiff and light. Their stiff-to-weight ratio is the highest. They are suitable for performance-oriented people. On the other hand, they are expensive and need to be inspected for cracks after a heavy crash to prevent failure under stress.

Learn more about gravel bike frame materials in this comparison article.

Gravel bikes for under $1500 mostly come with aluminum or steel frames. Don’t expect carbon frame gravel bikes in this price range. Carbon gravel bikes start at around $2000.

Generally speaking, bicycles use 1X, 2X, or 3X shifting, and gravel bikes are no exception. However, 3X shifting is not very common for gravel bikes.

1X shifting (1 chainring) offers fewer gears. This means it is simpler and ideal for beginners. On the other hand, the jumps between the individual gears are larger than 2X shifting.

The overall weight of 1X shifting is lower than 2X shifting, thanks to fewer parts. So, if you care about the bike’s overall weight, you should consider going for 1X shifting (among other things like the frame , wheels , etc.).

2X shifting (2 chainrings) offers a wider gear range. You can use a gear that suits you the best based on your preferred cadence and the terrain.

Cross-chaining vs. good shifting - illustration of the wrong and right chain positions.

The downside of the 2X shifting is that it is more prone to failure and damage due to many parts and things that can go wrong.

3X shifting (3 chainrings) is not popular among gravel bike riders. This shifting is complex, prone to failure and damage, and heavier than 1X or 2X shifting.

An illustration of a 1x chainring

Companies like Shimano or SRAM usually supply the groupsets, but you may also find other, less-known manufacturers like MicroShift or custom groupsets by the bike manufacturers themselves.

In the below $1500 price range, expect groupsets like Shimano Sora, Shimano Claris, Shimano Tiagra, SRAM Apex, MicroShift Advent X, etc.

Gravel bikes use 650b or 700c wheels.

650b wheels are smaller but use wider tires. They are perfect for rougher terrain like bumpy roads, mud, forest roads, single tracks, etc. Thanks to knobby tires, they will provide you with enough grip needed for these terrains.

This wheel size is also more comfortable thanks to wider tires. They better absorb bumps and other vibrations that make the ride uncomfortable.

700c wheels are bigger and use narrower tires compared to 650b wheels. This makes them better for light terrain and paved surfaces like the tarmac because they allow you to ride faster without spending as much energy.

According to La Velocita , 700c wheels combine the best weight, grip, and rolling resistance ratio.

An illustration of a 700c vs. 650b wheel size.

When buying a new gravel bike, think about the terrain you want to ride in. Do you prefer paved surfaces and light terrain? Good, go for 700c wheels.

Do you want to experience more adrenalin and fun in the terrain? Then, 650b wheels are the way to go.

During my market research, I could not find a gravel bike with rim brakes. Gravel bikes use almost exclusively one of the two types of disc brakes :

  • Mechanical disc brakes work similarly to rim brakes – a steel cable moves the pistons, creating friction that slows the bike. The advantage is that they are compatible with standard rim shifters and are easier to maintain at home. Their disadvantage is that the steel cable can wear out more easily and break when you don’t expect it.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes use fluid filled in the system. As CyclingAbout explains, when you pull the brake lever, the fluid rushes down to the caliper, closing the brake pads. This type of disc brake provides braking consistency in any riding condition. On the other hand, they are more difficult to maintain at home due to their complexity.

Gravel bikes under $1500 are usually equipped with mechanical disc brakes (except for a few exceptions). The hydraulic disc brakes are used on more expensive gravel bikes.

Accessories Compatibility

Another thing you should consider before buying a gravel bike is its compatibility with accessories.

If you plan to ride long distances, you will need to attach additional accessories to your bike to store clothes, food, tools, bike lock, or whatever you need.

Gravel bikes usually allow you to attach more than 2 bottle cages, bike racks, handlebar bags, frame bags, saddle bags, etc.

I recommend watching the following video to learn what to pack for your next bikepacking trip.

What's in a Gravel Bikepacking Gear List?

Choosing the correct bike can be tricky when you can’t try it. Online retailers publish bike size charts and bike geometry info to help you pick the bike size based on your height, inseam length, and other body dimensions.

You can also read my other article explaining how to choose a gravel bike size . It contains a bike size calculator to calculate the correct gravel bike size within seconds.

TIP : To compare geometries of not only gravel bikes, use the Bikeinsights tool.

Gravel Bikes FAQ

The main difference between a road and a gravel bike is the tire clearance. Road bikes use narrow tires (21 mm, 23 mm, 25 mm, etc.), so the tire clearance is narrower than gravel bikes (35 mm, 40 mm, 47 mm, 50 mm, etc.). Gravel bikes are equipped with 650b or 700c wheels. 650b wheels use wider tires compared to 700c wheels. The wider the tires, the more comfort and grip you get. However, the wider, knobby tires are usually slower than narrow tires and vice versa. Road and gravel bikes also differ in geometry and components (especially the gears). Read more about gravel bikes…

Yes, gravel bikes are good for paved roads. However, when you use a gravel bike with 700c wheels and narrow tires, your riding experience will be close to the riding experience of a road bike. The advantage of gravel bikes is that they are more comfortable than road bikes and much more versatile. You can ride with them on paved surfaces, light gravel, singletracks, etc.

Good gravel bikes with decent components start at around $1000. In the $1500 price range, you can expect a bike with an aluminum or a steel frame, a carbon fork, a low-end groupset, mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes, and sometimes accessories like front and rear racks. If you want a really good gravel bike with a carbon frame and better components, you will have to spend more money. Just remember, spending $3000 for a gravel bike does not pay off if you use it a few times a year.

Riejanne Markus begins new chapter with Lidl-Trek

trek gravel usa

Dutch Time Trial Champion will represent Lidl-Trek for the next three seasons

Lidl-Trek is thrilled to announce the first addition to its women’s team roster: Dutch Time Trial Champion Riejanne Markus, who will be riding with the Team through 2027. Markus, one of the strongest riders to come out of the Netherlands, has already proven her strength and versatility over the course of her impressive career. After turning professional with Parkhotel Valkenburg, Markus has gone on to secure 11 professional victories over the past decade. Among her many accolades, she boasts three national titles – two in the time trial and one in the road race – and has consistently excelled in the most prestigious Classics and Grand Tours. This season, Markus delivered an outstanding performance in the Vuelta a España, finishing second overall.

Speaking about her upcoming transfer, Markus expressed her excitement and high expectations for the future:

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Lidl-Trek,” Markus shared. “For years, I’ve admired their pioneering role within women’s cycling, providing the same level of support as their men’s team; something that has inspired me deeply. I’ve always been drawn to well-organized teams, and Lidl-Trek is renowned for just that. Plus, the atmosphere among the riders and staff looks fantastic, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

“I’m especially looking forward to riding on new equipment. Trek is known for producing world-class bikes, and their aerodynamic, lightweight road bikes and exceptional time trial bikes are a big part of why I decided to join the team. I have big goals for the upcoming seasons, particularly targeting GC in stage races and excelling in time trials. The European and World TT Championships are major objectives for me, as well as tackling the Tour de France, the Vuelta a España, and the hilly classics like Strade Bianche and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which suit my strengths perfectly.”

Luca Guercilena, General Manager of Lidl-Trek, welcomed Markus with great enthusiasm, noting her potential as an individual and as part of the Team.

“Riejanne has proven herself to be a force in both one-day races and stage races, and we’ve seen her take a big step up in recent seasons. She’s a rider whose ambition matches the drive of our team, and we’re confident that with Lidl-Trek, she’ll continue to make significant strides. Our R&D investments in aerodynamics will give her the tools she needs to excel even further, particularly on in time trials.

“Her qualities on the bike – climbing and time-trialling – will complement the rest of the Team well, allowing us to chase success in a variety of situations. Bringing her into Lidl-Trek will make us more competitive throughout the season, from the Classics to the Grand Tours.”

With Markus on board, Lidl-Trek is poised for an exciting season ahead, as the Team continues to grow in strength and depth.

Star Trek being forced to recast Christopher Pike saved the franchise

S tar Trek fans may be familiar with the story involving Jeffrey Hunter; the franchise's first captain. Hunter played Captain Christopher Pike in the first Star Trek pilot, "The Cage". It was later soundly rejected and a re-shoot was ordered. This time Hunter wasn't interested in appearing in the series anymore, and so series creator Gene Roddenberry and crew went and cast William Shatner to be the new lead.

Shatner of course played James T. Kirk and he'd head a mostly new cast in the next pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It faired much better, and a franchise was born. From that casting switch fans got six films featuring the original cast, a spinoff in The Next Generation, and further spinoffs in Deep Space Nine and Voyager, followed by a prequel in Enterprise. Plus, two other film franchises and a whole new slate of shows starting in 2017.

None of that would've been possible without the change from Hunter to Shatner. We're not being hyperbolic, either. Quite literally, had Shatner not taken over the reins from Hunter, there wouldn't have been a Star Trek heading into 1970.

At least not one you'd recognize. The reason why Star Trek was revived in the 70s, nearly a decade after its cancelation is because of the support the cast had from the fandom. Every from Shatner to Leonard Nimoy to Nichelle Nichols and everyone else you could think of was beloved. The thought of doing more Star Trek without someone from that original crew reprising their role was a non-starter for many.

Sadly, that's where things become too clear. You see, Hunter suffered an accident in 1969, and died on May 27, just six days before Star Trek: The Original Series broadcasted its last episode. Had Hunter stayed on with the project and the show met the same success with him at the helm as with Shatner, then it's fair to say that the series would've died with Hunter.

Fans right now, ourselves included, are debating how Star Trek 4 should handle the horrible passing of Anton Yelchin, a young and tremendous actor who died weeks before the premiere of Star Trek: Beyond. Yelchin's passing shocked fans, and now we're not sure if there should be another version of Pavel Chekov in this specific universe.

Imagine trying to recast the lead of an ultra-popular show. There's no guarantee fans would've wanted it. It may have ceased to exist like so many other shows before it. So while Hunter's passing was sad, the fact that Star Trek had Shatner at the time likely saved the franchise.

Best HOKA Hiking Shoes 2024

One of the top-rated HOKA hiking shoes on the market includes the fan-favorite Kaha 2 GTX boot style. HOKA

  • Dawn Magyar | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

If your weekend plans include hitting the trails, you already know how essential the right pair of hiking shoes are to your off-road adventure.

Hiking boots not only provide comfort on uneven terrain, but also they offer added support, which can help prevent injuries on rough trails.

HOKA makes some of the best hiking shoes you can buy, with several styles available for men and women. These waterproof shoes offer enhanced grip, impact-resistant cushioning and durable designs that let you enjoy the journey without cutting the day short.

But with so many different HOKA hiking boots to choose from, it can be a challenge to decide which pair to buy.

To help, here are some of the most recommended HOKA hiking shoes available, including the popular Anacapa and Speedgoat styles.

  • Anacapa 2 Low GTX: “We love how Hoka has taken a trail running shoe and beefed it up in all the right ways while keeping the soft and cushioned sole that we have come to know and love as thru-hikers and fastpackers. This is the shoe for the modern hiker who wants added durability, solid waterproofing, and support for sections of hiking off-trail but with a plush sole for soaking up all the jarring impacts of mile after mile,” GearLab says.
  • Speedgoat 5: “The Speedgoats have ranked on our list for years thanks to thick, soft, and super responsive midsoles, which make for an incredibly comfortable ride. Thanks to all that cushioning, they are exceptional at impact absorption, so you won’t feel those branches, rocks, or roots while moving down the trail,” Clever Hiker says.
  • Kaha 2 GTX: “We were surprised at just how lightweight they were when they arrived, as well as their comfort right out of the box — so much so that they felt like wearing tennis shoes. They fit true to size and offered great arch and ankle support throughout our tests. They performed well and provided fantastic traction on a wide array of surface types like hilly dirt trails, rock scrambling, and soggy creek beds,” Travel + Leisure says.
  • Speedgoat 5 Mid GTX: “Our testers loved the fit and noticed the boot wasn’t too stiff upon breaking in. It’s also perfect for varied, multi-surface terrain and trails that involve more technical elements, like hiking through boulder fields, scrambling, or making small stream crossings. The HOKA Speedgoat 5 Mid can handle almost anything, making it one of the more versatile options on this list,” Gear Junkie says.
  • Anacapa 2 Mid GTX: “The premium hiking boot features a lightweight EVA midsole, plush ankle collar and soft sock liner so your foot is completely enveloped in cloud-like comfort. A Gore-Tex liner and water resistant leather upper protect your feet from the elements as you trek through mud, gravel and dirt,” CBS Sports says.
