When it comes to traveling with makeup, I tend to take a more-is-more approach. (How can I predict if I'll want to wear red lipstick or a nude tone? Therefore, I bring both.) This requires a thoughtfully constructed, durable, and packable cosmetics case. 

The best travel makeup bags can accommodate a variety of full-size and travel-size products. Many have convenient organizational features without detracting from limited packing real estate. Detachable pockets  and anything that can be washed or wiped down are always a plus. 

I put more than 10 travel cosmetics cases to the test, and Kusshi's Signature Makeup Bag came out on top. Still, people who are looking for an oversized clear case or a purse-friendly daily pouch will appreciate other items on our list of the eight best makeup bags for traveling.

The pouch can hold over 20 full-size beauty products with room to spare, which is plenty for a week-long trip or more. But what truly sets this versatile bag apart is its ample organization and customization options. Inside, there are:

• A zippered pocket, where I kept cotton swabs and eyeshadow tape
• A detachable brush holder with four extra-large slots that can each hold multiple brushes 
• A zip pocket with plenty of room for lay-flat items like blushes and compacts.

The exterior zipper also opens wide on three sides, allowing the bag to be laid flat while you apply makeup. I found this convenient for locating and removing each of the cosmetics. 

I also love that the bag can be used with or without the brush holder. The interior nylon lining can be unzipped and removed, leaving you with a large, single-compartment clamshell case.

As far as aesthetics, this bag comes in a machine-washable fabric (with 15 color options) or a leather version (available in eight hues), which has a removable, machine-washable nylon interior lining.

The downside to too many pockets in your makeup bag is that sometimes it's tough to remember where you stashed everything.

With a lay-flat design when open, this budget-friendly makeup bag makes it easy to see all its contents at once. Still, it has convenient organizational features including a large clear compartment that's perfect for makeup brushes (I was able to fit six large ones without issue), two elastic side pockets that are great for fragile compacts, and a center zip pocket for small items like lipsticks.

A top handle makes the 9.75 x 4.68 x 4.68-inch bag easy to tote. When not in use, it folds flat.

Best for packing in a carry-on: Away The Cosmetics Bag

While duffle bags and soft-sided weekenders can accommodate an oddly-shaped makeup bag, a rectangular case is easier in carry-on suitcase. Cult-favorite luggage brand Away designed an ultra convenient makeup bag with exactly that in mind.

The 8.3 x 6.3 x 3.9-inch zip case stacks perfectly with Away's luggage organizers like packing cubes and a toiletry bag . Inside is a detachable five-slot makeup brush organizer. The main compartment is a large spill-proof clear zippered pocket, and inside that compartment is a second neoprene zip pocket. 

I was able to fit between 10 and 15 full-size beauty products, though overpackers might find the space limited. I recommend loading this case with travel-size products or using it on shorter trips.

My only gripe with this bag (and the one detail that kept it out of the top spot on this list) is that the neoprene zip pocket can't be removed. Depending on which products I packed, the neoprene pocket was either convenient or took away limited real estate from bulkier items. If the pocket were detachable, this bag would be perfect.

Best mini: Kusshi Everyday Makeup Bag

I'm the type to carry a few emergency makeup items (think: lipstick or concealer) in my daily handbag. Kusshi's Everyday Makeup Bag, the same brand little sister of my favorite Signature Makeup Bag, is the perfect daily companion for on-the-go cosmetics.

At 5 x 7.5 x 3.25 inches, it's a smaller version of the Signature bag, except it doesn't include a detachable brush holder/zip compartment (although I was able to fit a medium-size brush in the main compartment).

I got eight full-size makeup items inside, although I had to maneuver a bit to zip it shut. I'd probably recommend using travel-size makeup items in this bag.

Best oversized: Calpak Large Clear Cosmetics Case

As a beauty editor, I've accumulated quite the makeup collection — and even I had trouble filling this clear cosmetics case.

The 11.5 x 5.25 x 9-inch zip case has a whopping 9.5-liter capacity, in which I toted three eyeshadow palettes, four foundations, 10 blush sticks, six makeup brushes, five blush compacts, four concealers, three highlighters, three contour sticks, and a full-size aerosol makeup spray. I could have easily fit more. 

This makes the wipe-down case perfect for long trips or traveling for weddings where you may want to load up your entire makeup stash. Another idea: use one side of the case for toiletries and the other for cosmetics.

Since the bag has two huge compartments with one flat zip pocket, I would probably put items like lipsticks or eyeliners in smaller cases first and stow those smaller cases inside this bag. If you like the design of this bag but find the size daunting, Calpak also makes a 6-liter medium version .

Best leather: Quince Italian Leather Pouch Travel Set

Quince continues to impress with high-quality fabrics (like washable silk , plush cashmere , and even diamond jewelry ) at prices about 50-80% off traditional retail costs. The brand's leather bags are no exception.

This 100% top-grain Italian leather makeup bag set is stunning. There are six colors to choose from (I picked olive), and each is outfitted with gold-tone zippers. At $79 for the set, it makes a timeless gift that can be used for years to come. 

It's pretty basic in the way of organizational features (the larger bag has one flush slip pocket), but being able to divide items between two cases is advantageous. If you're trying to maximize packing space, this is a solid bet.

I used the 6.5 x 11 x 3.5-inch bag to stow larger full-size makeup items, and I was able to fit two foundations, a tinted moisturizer, two blushes, five blush/contour/highlight sticks, three lipsticks, a makeup setting spray, and an eyeshadow palette — with room to spare.

In the 5 x 9 x 3-inch clamshell, I carried full-size makeup brushes and a concealer. On shorter trips, you could also use the larger bag for travel-size toiletries (the water-resistant microfiber interior can be wiped clean) and the smaller pouch for makeup. I love that the smaller bag can be nested inside the larger one to save space when it's not in use.

This hanging toiletry bag from Boacay offers the convenience of vertical storage for an affordable price. The fold-out design makes packing and viewing the products very easy. This bag includes four separate zipper compartments that stay securely closed when hanging.

We packed a lot into this hanging case. We were able to fit four makeup brushes, three makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, two lipsticks, four toiletry bottles, and two hairspray cans. We tested the medium size, however, this product also comes in a larger size for those who need even more space.

The structure of this bag provided protection throughout our multiple shake and drop tests. Some of the products moved around a bit, but the fold-up design helped keep most things in place. We also appreciate the elastic loops in the middle two compartments that can help secure items.

Our tester has been using this hanging travel bag every day for the past five months. This convenient bag has become her regular makeup case. The hanging bag is durable and hasn’t sustained rips or tears. A small amount of powder that spilled in one of the pockets was easy to clean. She also loves the elastic straps inside two of the pockets that keep tubes and bottles separated and upright. Her one issue with the bag is that the plastic pockets bend quite a bit when full, which sometimes allows items to fall out.

If you’re looking for a sleek and portable travel makeup case that you can throw in any bag, the Lululemon Go Getter Pouch is the one for you. Don’t let the compact silhouette fool you, we were able to fit quite a few beauty products into this case. In the small front compartment, we fit four small/medium-sized brushes with room for more. We packed two palettes in the mesh pouch and five brushes, one more palette, two lipsticks, one foundation bottle, and three micellar travel bottles in the main pouch.

The outer water-repellent material made from recycled polyester looks stylish and, better yet, is also easy to clean. It feels thinner than other bags we tested — no extra padding here. After shaking and throwing the bag a few times during testing, a few caps came off some products, but thankfully, there were no spills or breaks. The tops of some lipsticks were a tad smushed. The design of this pouch is simple and straightforward without much internal organization. While the bag was able to fit many products, the lack of organized compartments made it difficult at times to find a specific product needed. 

The compact size of this big is a major highlight as it easily fits in a backpack, weekender bag , carry-on luggage, and a checked bag. We especially like the flexible fabric exterior, which makes squeezing it into an already full bag much easier. The price point is affordable for a well-known brand and makes it a great choice for those prioritizing portability in a travel makeup bag. 

Since she started using this pouch five months ago, our tester has taken the bag on a week-long trip. Because of its small size, she found it was a tight squeeze to fit her makeup and other items like an eyelash curler and brushes. While the bag is durable and didn’t rip during use, she found that her foundation left a stain on the fabric. Her least favorite thing about the bag is the lack of organizational features, which left her digging around or dumping everything out to find what she needed.

We packed four makeup brushes, three makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, three lipsticks, seven small toiletry bottles, and one hairspray. 

Despite initially feeling less sturdy when empty, this bag feels very secure once packed with products. The thin padding between the exterior and interior layers also adds additional protection. It fared well in all our shake and drop tests. No makeup or toiletries were broken or spilled, and the leather still looked great. The price is higher than some of the other bags we tested, but the genuine leather exterior, easy-to-clean interior, and loads of pockets make it well worth the cost.

This small train case from Leatherology has been our tester’s go-to bag for weekend and week-long trips. It fits everything she needs and then some, including larger eye shadow palettes. The case is super durable, and the interior still looks practically new. The outside has a foundation stain, but since it’s made of leather, our tester expects to get it out with a little elbow grease. She loves the size for longer trips but feels like it takes up too much room in her weekender bag to make it feasible for short trips.

This Travel Case Set from Cuyana is ideal for those wanting additional storage and the option of different sizes. The materials on these sleek, elegant leather cases feel durable and high quality. We learned the width of the opening can be a bit deceiving. We had to remove some products we initially packed in order to fully close the bag. In the larger bag alone we were still able to pack four makeup brushes, two makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, one lipstick, four toiletry bottles, and one hairspray and definitely had room for several more products. The second smaller case would be great for brushes, jewelry, or essential toiletries for your carry-on. 

At first, the soft leather exterior of these cases didn't feel as sturdy as the other ones we tested, but they still kept the products secure in our tests. A little bit of eyeshadow was the only makeup to spill during multiple drops and shake tests, but it was easily cleaned up. Getting two genuine leather travel makeup cases for this price is a great deal. We also like the option to choose which size feels most appropriate for different types of travel.

As a self-proclaimed overpacker, our tester was not able to store everything she needed in this set for a longer trip. For short, local trips, she found the small pouch to be ideal for carrying all of her essentials in a backpack. She appreciated the high-quality, durable material and how the two cases fit into one another for easy storage. After five months of use, the bags showed no signs of wear, and the few smudges that appeared were easy to wipe away.

The Cuyana Travel Beauty Case is the epitome of fashion and function together in one beautiful bag. The Italian leather exterior elevates the classic design of this travel makeup bag. The rectangular case opens up fully (like a clamshell), and we found it was super easy to pack. 

The internal organization is both super functional and beautiful, thanks to the matching leather interior. We appreciate the designated elastic loops for makeup brushes along with the leather flap to secure the brushes in place. The bonus removable leather zipper pouch adds another level of organization. An additional pocket at the bottom of the main compartment secures even more products. We were able to fit eight makeup brushes, two makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, four lipsticks, four toiletry bottles, and one hairspray. 

The leather exterior and interior protected our makeup well during our shake and drop tests. Only a few items shook loose, but nothing broke or spilled. We noticed a few minor scuffs after dropping and throwing the bag a few times, but they were easily wiped away with our fingers. While the high price is certainly an investment, this travel case will be a beautiful piece to add to your travel collection for years to come. 

During the past five months, our tester has used this Cuyana case for every trip she has taken. She was able to fit a ton inside and found the smaller pouch to be ideal for bringing a couple of things along for touch-ups. She appreciates all the organizational touches, from brush straps to a large compartment with a sleeve, and how protective the case is. The case has kept her eye palettes damage-free on trips around the world. She generally checks the large case and keeps the small pouch with her. The exterior of the bag is durable, easy to wipe clean, and looks as good as new.

While we were able to pack a substantial amount of makeup in this case, the caps came off several products during our shake and drop tests, leading us to fear some inevitable spills during travel. We also think the price tag is a bit steep compared to similar bags we tested.
• Calpak Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag : We love the durability of this bag’s material, not to mention its cute aesthetic. The compact size is super portable, and its ability to hang vertically makes it an all-around space-saver. While this hanging toiletry bag held ample products, several makeup items fell out during our shake and drop tests, which forebodes potential broken and spilled makeup. Plus, it is more expensive than similar and more secure bags we tested.
• Mark & Graham Concourse Cosmetics Case : We love the option to remove the smaller zipper pouch and use it on its own. While the larger case is easy to open and pack, we wish there were a few more organizational features to separate and secure items. We’ve carried this belt bag across our bodies, around our waist like a true fanny pack, and even as a clutch — and we’ve loved it every time. It’s strappy and stylish like a purse, but it fits a bit more securely, like a fanny pack or sling bag. We’ve been using this purse for more than four years and it’s still finding ways to impress us. It’s not overly spacious, but it’s large enough to fit a few essential items and it’s the ideal size for trips ranging from international journeys to weekend getaways. Designed with one main compartment, two separate zip compartments, and a handful of other interior zip and slip pockets, you won’t find a crossbody of this size with better organization features. The detachable strap and touchably smooth leather are testaments to the bag’s high-quality construction, but our favorite thing about it might be the available colors: there are 21 color and leather options ranging from navy Saffiano leather to cognac cactus leather.

It’s roomier than it looks — and because it's Bottega Veneta, you know it's going to last.

It’s the most expensive item on our list by far.

Bottega Veneta’s chic little Small Loop Camera Bag may have snagged our best designer spot, but after using it for the past year, we think it’s the best bag for city exploration, too. We’ve used it in London for a weeklong trip, toted it around the towns of Spain, and have taken it with us pretty much everywhere in New York City. Despite its compact size and single compartment, it’s spacious enough to fit plenty of items like a small wallet, sunglasses, a phone, keys, cosmetics, and more. The woven leather design and gold hardware only up the luxurious feel, while an unstructured strap feels soft on the shoulder. We love this bag in classic black, but it’s also available in white, pink, and navy.

Kavu Sydney Satchel

It’s well-made, reasonably priced, and packed with pockets.

It’s not particularly fancy or fashion-forward.

The Kavu Sydney Satchel may be our value pick, but don’t let that deter you — there’s not much the bag can’t do. We’ve spent the last four or five years taking it pretty much everywhere, including various national parks, multi-week Europe trips, and nights out with friends. Because it’s made of extra-durable cotton, it holds up against unfavorable weather and rough travel. It’s on the larger side, so it’ll fit plenty of items including clothing, but it’s also rather slim, so it makes a great non-bulky travel bag. It’s the pockets, though, that keep us coming back to this crossbody: the oversized front pocket holds larger items like travel wallets , tablets, and other devices, while the main compartment boasts several smaller interior pockets for things like cards and cosmetics. To top it all off, the Sydney comes in 26 fun prints and colors.

It’s the most stylish sling bag we’ve ever seen, and it has space for both parents' items and their kids' stuff.

It’s a little pricey for a sling bag.

This is the daily bag we’ve been using for the past few years to carry our stuff and our kids’ stuff — without sacrificing style. While it’s not quite the size of a full-fledged baby bag, it does have the space for a change of clothes, some snacks, a full-size wallet, sunglasses, sunscreen, and other everyday essentials. Because it has a wide, super comfy strap and boasts high-end construction, it makes an excellent personal item when flying. It even has a cushioned back panel, a water-resistant lining, water-resistant back pockets, and a key clip. After using it for a couple of years, we think it feels like an oversized belt bag that can be worn across the body.

Other Crossbodies We Liked

A few other crossbody bags almost made our list, but were ultimately cut due to minor issues we experienced while using them.

Athleta All About Crossbody : This crossbody is quite durable and comfy, and we like it enough that we’ve used it pretty consistently over the last few months. It’s just a bit too small to use as a travel bag or even as a commuter bag. 

Lo & Sons Waverley 2 : This bag is made for travel and it’s come along with us everywhere from Cancun to Paris. It’s super slim yet packed with pockets, so it’s a packing dream, but we noticed that after a few years of use, there’s some discoloration on the leather.

Lug Coupe XL Convertible Crossbody Bag : We appreciated that the Lug Coupe XL Convertible Crossbody Bag is somewhat more stylish than the average belt bag or fanny pack and it has a sufficient number of pockets. Still, we feel it’s a little pricey for a small polyester bag — plus the strap closure seems strange for this type of bag.

Our team members have taken these crossbody bags on trips of various lengths and have owned them anywhere between a few months and several years.

Tips For Buying a Crossbody Bag

Make sure it fits your essentials.

It can be tempting to go for the most visually appealing crossbody bag you can find, but keep in mind crossbodies are small by nature and if you can’t fit all your daily items inside, you’ll just end up frustrated on your travels. You may even find yourself wanting to buy a new bag once you arrive at your destination. That said, it’s wise to prioritize size over everything else when shopping for a crossbody.

Look for padded, adjustable straps

Crossbody straps are often thinner than those on totes and backpacks, so if your bag is stuffed to the brim, that thin strap may dig into your shoulder. To avoid discomfort in your shoulder or any body part the bag may repeatedly rub against, consider crossbodies with padded, adjustable straps. 

Prioritize built-in organization and safety features

Depending on what you plan on traveling with, it’s a good idea to shop for crossbodies that have plenty of pockets as well as safety features such as zip tops or both zips and snaps for double protection. Multiple pockets mean there’s a spot for everything, making it easier to locate things inside the purse. Meanwhile, safety features like locking zippers, slash-resistant straps, and RFID-blocking technology help prevent pickpockets and hackers from getting their hands on your most precious items.

Standard crossbodies can be worn over the shoulder or, as the name suggests, across the body. More specific crossbodies like belt bags and sling bags can be worn across the chest or back or even around the waist — fanny pack-style.

When worn correctly, it’s harder for crossbodies to slip off your shoulder or be stolen than totes and handbags. Crossbodies also allow shoppers to go hands-free, which is helpful on challenging hikes, cycling adventures, and when there’s other luggage to carry.

Typically, airlines only allow travelers to bring two items into the cabin with them: a carry-on — which is usually stowed in the overhead bins — and a smaller personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you. Most crossbody bags are small enough to be considered a personal item (18 x 14 x 8 inches) and some larger ones count as carry-ons (22 x 14 x 9 inches). But if you’re hoping to bring a crossbody into the cabin in addition to another personal item and carry-on, TSA will likely ask you to pack your crossbody into another piece of luggage or leave it at the airport altogether. Something smaller and more compact, like a phone purse , might work better since it can be stashed in a carry-on or personal item easily if necessary.

Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)

Still commonly known by its post-war name of Lomonosov, the estate at Oranienbaum is the oldest of the Imperial Palaces around St. Petersburg, and also the only one not to be captured by Nazi forces during the Great Patriotic War. Founded by Prince Menshikov, Peter the Great's closest adviser, the Grand Palace is one of the most opulent examples of Petrine architecture to have survived to the present, although until very recently the palace itself has been greatly neglected. After Menshikov's death, Oranienbaum passed to the state, and was used as a hospice until, in 1743, it was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III. Peter made Oranienbaum his official summer residence and transformed one corner of the park, ordering the construction of a "Joke" Castle and a small citadel manned by his Holstein guards. This peculiar ensemble, called Petershtadt, was mostly demolished during Pavel's reign. Antonio Rinaldi, the Italian-born architect who also designed the Grand Palace at Gatchina and the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, was commissioned by Peter in 1758 to build a modest stone palace next to the fortress, and this has survived.

After Peter was deposed, Rinaldi was commissioned by Catherine the Great to build the Chinese Palace, in the Upper Park, as her official country residence. However, Catherine spent little time at Oranienbaum, which she had grown to hate during her marriage to Peter, and by the end of the 18 th century the estate had been turned into a Naval Cadet College. The palace became an Imperial residence again in the reign of Alexander I, and retained that status until the Revolution, when it was immediately opened as a museum. Although never captured by the Germans, Oranienbaum was bombarded during the war and, while the Grand Menshikov Palace survived intact, its restoration was given much lower priority than the more famous estates at Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo. Today, the small but elegant park has been almost completely restored, while the full restoration of the palaces has finally gained momentum over the last decade.
