1. Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz)

Construction of Speyer’s red sandstone church began under Conrad II in 1030, and even though the cathedral was expanded and altered several times and the region faced several wars since, it has maintained many of its Romanesque features. The vaulted nave and the four towers, which mark each corner of the building, are typical for that era, and in 1925 Pope Pius XI awarded the landmark the honorary title Basilica Minor, and in 1981 the UNESCO followed suit and added Speyer Cathedral to its list of World Heritage Sites .

Visit Eltz Castle

Burg Eltz is the epitome of a medieval castle . Perched on a rock in the midst of a forest, the grey-shingled turrets are the first thing you see before you step onto the cobbled bridge that takes you to the main portal. The thick walls of bricks and red-and-white timber structures hold the stories of 850 years. Once you’re done getting some epic Instagram shots, step inside. Guided tours give you a chance to travel back in time and explore the treasury, armoury, the old kitchen and furniture and a lot more.

Drink all the wine

The Rhineland-Palatinate state is serious wine country. Vineyards populate the steep slopes along the Rhine, Moselle and Saar Rivers and produce award-winning Rieslings, Pinot Noirs and other varieties. Not booking yourself in for at least one wine tasting while you’re in the area would be a wasted opportunity. Join a vineyard and cellar tour, stop by the wine taverns of Cochem and Bacharach, or time your visit for September so you can attend the world’s largest wine festival in Bad Dürkheim.

Learn about Germany’s Roman legacy

Out of all the ancient Roman settlements in western Germany, Trier is the city that boasts the most impressive relics of the time. Standing in front of the Porta Nigra will have you shaking your head in disbelief imagining that the imposing gate has stood here since 180 AD. Other UNESCO-listed sites in the city have a similar effect, including the Imperial bathhouses and the gigantic amphitheatre, which saw 20,000 spectators and bloody fights between gladiators and animals in its time.

Feel like a race car champion

As far as sports venues go, the Nürburgring is a must-see. The impressive race court fits 150,000 motorsports fans from all over the world who come here to watch race car drivers take on the parkour at head-spinning speeds – the lap record is still held by Germany’s legendary seven-time world champion Michael Schuhmacher. But how do you feel about getting behind the wheel yourself? The venue offers a myriad of packages – you can take your own car onto the track, join as a co-pilot, book race car driving training or, if that’s too much adrenaline for you, the behind-the-scenes tour is definitely worth the money.

See the Deutsches Eck headland

Koblenz is a combination of everything we have just mentioned. The city sits at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers and dates back to 9 BC, when the Romans erected a military post here. Don’t miss out on a cable-car ride across the river and up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Deutsches Eck headland and the oversized statue of Wilhelm I, Germany’s first Emperor who unified Germany after the Franco-Prussian War.

Famous Lorelei Rock

The most famous of all Rhine legends has its origin at the only 130-metre wide narrow part of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen. Steep cliffs leave no room for the current here and many ship accidents nourished the fairy tale of the fair blonde who, high up on the rock, confused the boatmen's senses. Many myths entwine themselves around this place. In the 19th century Clemens Brentano transferred the name of the rock, which pushes far into the river bed, to the enchanting blonde woman. Pure Rhine romanticism.

Rhineland-Palatinate

Discover vineyards, castles, and culture.

The Rhineland-Palatinate is a medium-sized state on the western border of Germany. It is a relatively new administrative region formed after World War II, although the Palatinate region (' der Pfalz ' in German) was a medieval area which covered the southern part of the current state..

The Palatinate is also a term which is used in wine production. The Palatinate area in wine terminology refers to a particular district in the southern part of the state.

Of course, the Palatinate is not the only wine-producing region in the state: there are five other important areas and, overall, the Rhineland-Palatinate has the largest cultivated area of vineyards in Germany.

Cities in Rhineland-Palatinate

Mainz Germany view

Mainz is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate and the largest city in the state with around 200,000 inhabitants.

The Mainz Cathedral, or Mainzer Dom, is one of the city’s most prominent landmarks. It dates back to the 10th century and has a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture.

The city is known for its historic connection to printing. The city is home to the Johannes Gutenberg University, one of the largest universities in Germany. It is named after the inventor of movable type printing, who was born in Mainz. The Gutenberg Museum celebrates the invention.

Trier Germany view

Trier is located near the border with Luxembourg in the Moselle wine region. It is the oldest city in Germany, with a history stretching back over 2,000 years.

Trier was founded by the Celts in the late 4th century BC and later became a significant city in the Roman Empire. Trier is home to several well-preserved Roman remains, including the Porta Nigra, the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps; the Imperial Baths; and the Trier Amphitheater.

Part of Trier has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its rich architectural heritage.

Koblenz Germany view

Koblenz is a city located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. It’s the third-largest city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, with a population of over 110,000.

Koblenz has a history that spans over 2,000 years, making it almost as old as Trier. It was established as a military post by the Romans in the year 8 BC.

One of the most famous landmarks in Koblenz is the Deutsches Eck ("German Corner"), which is where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. It is marked by a monumental equestrian statue of Emperor William I.

Natural attractions

Moselle valley.

One of the renowned 'loops' in the Moselle valley

The Moselle valley is characterised by its steep vineyards, quaint villages, and medieval castles. It offers a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and river cruises.

The valley is especially known for its white wine production. The steep, sun-soaked slopes along the river create an ideal environment for vineyards. The region is particularly famous for its Riesling wines.

The region has a wealth of historical sites including the ancient city of Trier, Germany’s oldest city with numerous Roman remains, and the medieval Eltz Castle, which is still owned by the same family that lived there in the 12th century.

Palatinate Forest

View from the Geiersteine rocks in the Palatinate Forest

The Palatinate Forest, known in German as the ' Pfälzerwald ', is wooded region of low mountains in southwestern Germany. It is the largest continuous forest area in the country and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including wild boar and deer.

Together with the French Northern Vosges, it forms the UNESCO Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve, one of the biggest forests in Europe.

It is a popular destination for outdoor activities and has an extensive network of hiking trails, including the Pfälzer Waldpfad long-distance trail.

The forest is dotted with numerous castles and ruins, many of which date back to the Middle Ages. Some of the most notable ones include Trifels Castle, Madenburg, and Hambach Castle.

WineLand Palatinate

The marketing pun on the official state name (" Weinland-Pfalz " vs " Rheinland-Pfalz ") gives visitors an idea of how important wine production is here. The region is quite literally a paradise for any wine lover.

Rhineland-Palatinate can boast six main wine-producing regions: Palatinate, Rhine-Hesse, Nahe, Ahr, Moselle, and Middle-Rhine.

Palatinate (Pfalz) : This region is renowned for its Riesling, but it also produces a wide variety of other wines such as Gewürztraminer and Dornfelder. It is one of the warmest regions in Germany, with vineyards stretching from the Rhine up to the Haardt mountain range.

Rhine-Hesse (Rheinhessen) : This is the largest wine-producing region in Germany, known for its semi-sweet Liebfraumilch-style wines. It also produces a range of other wines including Silvaner, Riesling, and Dornfelder.

Nahe : Named after the river that traverses it, this region is known for its mineral-rich soils that contribute to the high quality of its wines. The Rieslings from here are particularly distinctive, with a balance of fruity acidity and mineral notes.

Ahr : This is one of the smallest wine regions in Germany, but it is also one of the most notable. It is particularly known for its red wines, especially its Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). The region’s steep vineyards along the Ahr river valley provide an ideal microclimate for red grape cultivation.

Moselle (Mosel) : This region is perhaps the most famous of all German wine regions. The slate soils of its steep vineyard terraces along the Moselle river contribute to the distinctively crisp and mineral Rieslings that it produces.

Middle Rhine (Mittelrhein) : This small region stretches along the Rhine river. It is characterised by its steep, terraced vineyards and is particularly known for its Riesling wines. The region’s picturesque landscape with numerous castles and ruins has contributed to it being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Apart from its wines, Rhineland-Palatinate is also known for its regional cuisine sourced locally. Expect to see vegetables from the Hunsrück and Westerwald, fish from the Rhine and Moselle, and venison dishes from the Palatinate and Eifel.

Cultural highlights

Unesco world heritage sites.

Rhineland-Palatinate boasts a rich cultural heritage with several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a picturesque region characterized by its stunning landscapes, vineyards, and historic castles. This 65 km stretch along the Rhine River is the perfect destination for visitors seeking a romantic getaway or a leisurely cruise.

Another World Heritage site worth exploring is the ancient Roman city of Trier. Trier is home to an impressive collection of Roman ruins, including the famous Porta Nigra, the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps.

The Porta Nigra or Black Gate in Trier

The SHUM cities of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz are known for their significant Jewish heritage, recognised by UNESCO when sites from these cities were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2021. The inscription includes Speyer's Jewish courtyard, Worms' Holy Sand cemetery, and Mainz's Old Jewish Cemetery.

"SHUM" is an acronym derived from the initial letters of the Hebrew names for Speyer (Shpira), Worms (Varmaisa), and Mainz (Magenza). These cities were important centers of Jewish life and learning during the Middle Ages, often referred to as the "Jerusalem of the North".

Events and Festivals

Mainz Carnival (Mainzer Fastnacht) : One of the largest and most traditional Fasching carnivals in Germany. It is celebrated with parades, costume balls, and various events from November to Ash Wednesday, with the peak celebrations taking place in February.

Rhine in Flames (Rhein in Flammen) : A series of firework displays that take place along the most picturesque stretches of the Rhine river from May to September.

The 'Rhine in Flames' festival in Koblenz

Wine festivals : The world's largest wine festival is the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt. It is held on the middle two weekends in September and can be thought of as the wine equivalent of the Munich Oktoberfest. Other notable festivals include the Deidesheimer Weinkerwe and the Middle Mosel Wine Festival in Bernkastel-Kues.

Nürburgring : The Nürburgring race track to the west of Koblenz hosts various motor sport events throughout the year, including the 24 Hours Nürburgring race and the F1 German Grand Prix.

15 Best Things to Do in Koblenz (Germany)

In the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Koblenz is a 2,000-year-old city where the Moselle joins the Rhine. Right at the confluence of those rivers the Teutonic Order founded one of its first commanderies in the 13th century and where the immense Frankish Empire was divided up in the 800s.

To honour that history, a monumental statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I was unveiled here at the end of the 19th century. You could make an epic journey upriver, on the Rhine Castles Trail, where castles and palaces mingle with vineyards on the steep valley sides.

And if you’d prefer to keep things local be sure to ride Koblenz cable car, which carries you across the river up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the opposite bank.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Koblenz :

1. Deutsches Eck

Deutsches Eck

The confluence of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers has always had special meaning in Germany, as at this exact spot there was an early commandery for the Teutonic Order.

The Teutonic Knights arrived here in 1216 at the behest of the Archbishop of Trier Theoderich von Wied.

In 1897 a large scale equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I was raised at this location nine years after the emperor’s death.

The original monument was imbued with Imperialist iconography and was meant to rouse German nationalistic fervour.

That 37-metre monument was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War and because of its controversial subject wouldn’t be reconstructed until 1993, after great debate.

Up to that time the empty pedestal stood as a monument to German unity.

2. Koblenz Cable Car

Koblenz Cable Car

One of the first things to decide when you arrive in Koblenz is when you’re going to take a trip on the cable car.

This lifts you across the Rhine and up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Just under 900 metres long, the system has 18 cars, and its capacity of more than 7,500 passengers an hour is higher than any other cable car in the world.

On the crossing you’ll have a bird’s eye perspective of the Upper Middle Rhine’s World Heritage landscape and the mighty river itself.

The view is even better if you’re on car 17, which has a glass floor but obviously isn’t for people with vertigo! Try to catch a car around sunset, when the light is stunning.

3. Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

The high spur 118 metres above the right bank of the Rhine has been defended by a fortress since the 11th century.

And up to the start of the 1800s this complex was besieged, destroyed and swapped between the French and the Archbishop Electors of Trier, princes of Saxony and then the Prussians, over hundreds of years.

When the French withdrew in 1801 they blew up the stronghold to avoid the Prussians having a fortress just a few metres from what was then French territory on the left bank.

The current fortress was completed by the Prussians in 1828 and is the second largest in Europe.

4. Landesmuseum Koblenz

Landesmuseum Koblenz

Inside the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is the multi-faceted Landesmuseum, which has exhibitions on Rhineland-Palatinate’s cultural history, viticulture, photography and archaeology.

One of the most fascinating things to see is the Greif (Griffin) canon, which, at more than five metres long, was one of the largest canons cast in the 16th century.

The showpiece of the photography exhibition are the works of the early 20th-century photographer Jacob Hilsdorf, who took portraits of many famous figures from the era, from nobility to the artist Max Liebermann.

Whenever you come the museum will have all kinds of temporary exhibitions.

These can cover anything from famous vintners to upcoming German photographers, and artefacts like hoards of coins found under during excavations of the fortress.

5. Schängelbrunnen

Schängelbrunnen

Willi-Hörter-Platz in the town hall’s courtyard is a much-loved fountain framed by those Renaissance and Baroque Jesuit buildings.

The Schängelbrunnen, showing a boy spitting water at irregular bursts into the basin, was designed by the sculptor Carl Burger in 1940, and has a slightly complicated meaning to explain.

The inspiration came from the city’s anthem, the Schängellied, written in 1914. This is about the mischievous exploits of the city’s boys, known as Schängel.

The name is actually French in origin: Boys born in Koblenz during the city’s occupation were all known as “Jean”, which became “Schang” in the local dialect.

The Schängel in the fountain sums up that sense of lovable roguishness that is valued in this part of Germany.

6. Schloss Stolzenfels

Schloss Stolzenfels

A few minutes upriver and you’ll be at one of the most feted castles in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Schloss Stolzenfels has been around since the 14th century but was destroyed by the French in the Nine Years’ War at the end of the 17th century.

It was left to decay until the land was gifted by Koblenz to Frederick William IV of Prussia in 1823. A little later he rebuilt the castle in a picture-book Gothic Revival style, according to the Romantic ideals of the period.

Getting there is half the fun as you have to trek through gardens on a long, twisting path.

At this fairytale building you’ll be given a guided tour, learning about the intricacies of 19th-century etiquette, admiring the virtuoso woodcarving inside, and even having to change into slippers to help preserve the fine parquet floors.

7. Basilica of St. Castor

Basilica Of St. Castor

In touching distance of the Deutsches Eck are the pointed Romanesque towers of the oldest church in Koblenz.

Once attached to a monastery, the Basilica is part of that UNESCO World Heritage Site for the epochal events that have taken place since its foundation 1,200 years ago.

It was at this place in 842 that 110 representatives negotiated the division of the Frankish Empire.

Most of the architecture is from the 12th century and although the church did take damage in the Second World War, this was reparable.

Undamaged in the attack were the stunning star vaults above the choir and nave.

8. Rhine Castles Trail

Upper Middle Rhine Valley

Between Koblenz and the town of Bingen, less than an hour to the south, there are more than 20 castles on the river.

The Rhine Castles Trail also passes through three of Germany’s main wine growing region.

The landscape is included in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO Site, and is a veritable wonderland for walkers.

A classic hiking trail will be high on the walls of the valley, weaving through vineyards and with dreamy views of the Rhine at every step.

The choice of things to see on the way is vast, but you have to make a stop in the impossibly cute Medieval town of Boppard, and make time for Oberwesel where the mighty Schönburg castle is posted far above the Rhine.

9. Electoral Palace

Electoral Palace, Koblenz

The prince, Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony built this ceremonious Neoclassical palace on the left bank of the Rhine from 1777 to 1793. He was the uncle of the French King Louis XVI and was forced to flee Koblenz following the French Revolution and War of the First Coalition, during which the city would come under French control.

The palace was passed to Prussia in 1815 and would be frequented by Prussian royalty for the next 100 years.

It was badly damaged by bombing in 1944, but was quickly rebuilt and its facade was restored according to the original 18th-century designs.

Now, the stylish Grand Café, with herringbone floors is open inside.

You can watch the river from the terraced gardens in front and see the monument for Father Rhine and Mother Moselle.

10. Jesuitenplatz

Jesuitenplatz

This square in the middle of Koblenz’s Altstadt takes its name from the Jesuit order, which was in Koblenz for just shy of 200 years until it was expelled in 1773. On the south border of the square, the Baroque former Jesuit college, built at the end of the 17th century, has become Koblenz’s town hall.

This is flanked by domed towers and with a passageway through a grand portal.

Huddled in the southeastern corner of the square is the Jesuit church from the 1610s.

Take a while to study the tympanum in the Renaissance portal, which has sculptures of St John the Baptist, as well as Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier, the founder and cofounder of the Jesuits.

11. Liebfrauenkirche

Liebfrauenkirche

There has been a church at this location for 1,600 years, going back to when a hall from the reign of the Roman Emperor Valentinian was converted by Christians.

Looking at the Liebgrauenlirche from below you’ll see that its towers have Baroque onion domes, and these were fitted at the end of the 17th-century following bombardment by the troops of Louis XIV in 1688. Pass under the figure of Mary and Child and look up at the Late Gothic rib vaults in the nave and choir, as well as the groin vault in the gallery.

In the south aisle is the 17th-century altar of St Nicholas, while there’s also a 14th-century wooden crucifix and tombs for local noble families going back to the Renaissance.

12. Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung

Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung

In the Langemarck-Kaserne (barracks) dating from the 1910s is one of Germany’s biggest military technology exhibitions.

The collection is organised by the government to help train soldiers and engineers, but is also open to the public.

If you’re into military equipment you’ll have to travel a long way to see something as impressive: On five floors there’s a big cache of hardware, starting with planes (look for the Lockheed F-104), tanks (Leopard I and II), helicopters and heavy guns on the ground floor and moving up to lighter exhibits like tactical uniforms, light arms, ammunition and communications technology.

13. Am Plan

Am Plan

One of Koblenz’s noble squares, Am Plan owes its current style to Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony, who had the plaza redesigned in the 1770s.

The square’s historical interest lies in its Baroque architecture on the north side.

Look for the commandant headquarters beneath the towers of the Liebfrauenkirche.

This was the seat of the fortress commander, and then a fire station for most of the 20th century.

Looking around, you’ll come across a plaque for Henriette Sontag, marking the birthplace of one of the 19th century’s most famous sopranos.

The fountain meanwhile dates to 1806 and was once fed by the Electoral Palace’s Metternich aqueduct.

14. Kastorbrunnen

Kastorbrunnen

Outside the Basilica of St. Castor, go in for a better look at the Kastorbrunnen, a French-era fountain erected in 1812. The fountain is a real curio as it bears an inscription by the French prefect, Jules Doazan, prematurely praising Napoleon’s conquest of Russia, a campaign that would actually end in disaster.

In 1814, after the rout of the French army, Koblenz’s Russian commandant ordered the humorous inscription beneath the Doazan’s initial message, reading: “Vue et approuvé par nous, le Commandant Russe de la Ville de Coblence” (seen and approved by the Russian commandant of the city of Koblenz).

15. DB Museum Koblenz

DB Museum Koblenz

A satellite of the Deutsche Bahn Museum in Nuremberg, this attraction opened in a 100-year-old wagon repair shop in 2001. On Saturdays you can come and see more than 20 vintage locomotives and carriages.

Although there are a few steam engines, the museum’s specialty is electric railway travel, and the prized exhibit is the Trans Europe Express, which you can ride.

The preserved wagons are a testament to luxury rail journeys in the early and mid-20th century.

And along with the actual rolling stock you can view a cross-section of an engine, models, seats, black and white photographs and posters in the museum’s showcases.

10 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in the Rhine Valley

Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated May 1, 2023

The Rhine is not only one of Europe's most beautiful rivers, it's also one of the continent's most important waterways. Flowing some 1,320 kilometers from Switzerland all the way to the Netherlands and the North Sea, this spectacular natural waterway is also one of the most popular river cruising destinations on the planet.

The town of Bacharach in the Rhine Valley

One of the most appealing sections of this mighty river flows through Germany's Middle Rhine Valley (Rheintal), an area of outstanding natural beauty.

In fact, this stretch of river extending from Mannheim in the south to Koblenz in the north boasts scenery so spectacular that a large section, referred to as the Rhine Gorge (Rheinschlucht), has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Thanks to its many castles and historic small towns and cities, this stretch of the Rhine has for centuries influenced artists, authors, and composers.

These days, it's as popular among day trippers as it is with those staying for longer visits, with numerous things to do, including opportunities for hiking or cycling adventures along its many long-distance trails and bike routes. Equally fun is hopping aboard a riverboat for a day-long or extended river excursion.

However you plan to travel, explore this scenic region of Germany with our list of the best places to visit and top tourist attractions in the magnificent Rhine Valley.

Experience the Rhine Gorge

Take a slow boat along the rhine, visit the many museums of mainz, worms cathedral, explore pedestrian-friendly mannheim, hike or bike the palatinate forest (pfälzer wald), visit an authentic german spa town: wiesbaden, koblenz: the german corner, braubach and marksburg castle, boppard's roman legacy.

The Rhine Gorge

The most scenic section of the Rhine Valley, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley , often simply referred to as the Rhine Gorge, stretches for 65 kilometers from the beautiful city of Koblenz all the way to the town of Bingen am Rhein . It has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its importance in terms of the history, geology, culture, and industry of this region of Germany.

Rich in unique flora and fauna thanks to its microclimate, it's a fascinating section of the Rhine Valley to explore. One of the best ways to experience this beautiful part of the world is to extend your visit with a stay at an authentic guesthouse or inn situated in any one of the many quaint towns and villages that cling to the riverbanks between the Rhine and the cliffs.

Notable examples of great bases from which to venture out and explore include the towns of Boppard, Lahnstein, Braubach, and Bacharach, to name but a few.

Whether you choose to see the Rhine Gorge from the comfort of a car or while cycling or walking along the banks of this mighty river, you can't fail to be impressed by its steep cliffs. The most dramatic of these is the famous Loreley Rock , a huge rocky outcrop that rises vertically to an impressive 200 meters in height.

River cruise on the Rhine

One of the best ways to see and experience the mighty Rhine River is aboard a full-day Rhine Valley river cruise from Frankfurt. Embarking in the beautiful city of Frankfurt on the Main River , this fun cruise will typically whisk you by riverboat to historic Rudesheim and Lorely, stopping for a riverside lunch along the way. Pressed for time? A half-day tour option is also available.

Gutenberg Museum in Mainz

The old cathedral city of Mainz lies on the west bank of the Rhine opposite the mouth of the River Main, just 44 kilometers west of Frankfurt . Located in the midst of many of the most important Rhine Valley attractions, Mainz is an ideal location from which to explore this beautiful region of Germany.

Travel south along the Rhine and you'll hit the picturesque old towns of Worms , famous for its splendid cathedral; and Mannheim , well-known for its medieval architecture. To the north is the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site of the Rhine Gorge , considered one of the most beautiful places to visit in Germany.

Mainz itself boasts a rich and diverse heritage that dates all the way back to Roman times. Much of this fascinating history is recorded in excellent museums such as the Roman-Germanic Central Museum (Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie), which maintains some of its most important artifacts in the historic Electoral Palace in Mainz.

Also important is the Museum of Ancient Seafaring (Museum für antike Schifffahrt), with its stunning full-scale replicas of Roman galleons. Another one of the highlights of Mainz is the Gutenberg Museum . This must-visit attraction features fascinating displays depicting the life and times of the inventor of the moveable metal type printing technique, who was born here in 1398.

Worms Cathedral

The cathedral city of Worms, located on the west bank of the Rhine, is one of the oldest towns in Germany. A highlight of a visit should be the 11th-century Cathedral of St. Peter (Wormser Dom, or Dom St. Peter).

With its four round towers and twin domes, this spectacular old building ranks, along with the cathedrals of Speyer and Mainz, as one of the finest achievements of the High Romanesque architectural style.

The cathedral's nave is particularly impressive, rising some 27 meters tall, while its domes reach heights of 40 meters. Interior highlights include five Late Gothic sandstone reliefs from the old cloister, its fine choir stalls, and a superb Baroque high altar.

Other buildings of note in Worms' Marktplatz are the early 18th-century Trinity Church , with its fine interior, and the 10th-century St. Magnus' Church .

Address: Domplatz, 67547 Worms

Mannheim

Thanks to its favorable location on the east bank of the Rhine, Mannheim has served as one of Europe's most important, and largest, inland harbors for centuries. It's also a relatively new city by European standards, and was laid out in the early 17th century on a grid of rectangles, much like most North American cities.

Pedestrian-friendly and fun to explore on foot, the cultural center of the city revolves around the historic Marktplatz with its Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) and the Lower Parish Church (Untere Pfarrkirche), erected in 1723. Also interesting is the nearby Jewish Center (Jüdisches Zentrum) with its synagogue .

Another important point of interest is Mannheim Baroque Palace . Completed in 1760 and one of the largest such palaces in Germany, this attractive old palace is a delight to explore. Highlights include the magnificent Knights' Hall and the grand Imperial Quarters, notable for their elaborate decor.

Shoppers are also well-catered to in Mannheim. The city's main shopping areas focus on the Planken and the Kurpfalzstrasse, which intersect in Paradeplatz. Be sure to spend time sightseeing around the port area, too. Here, you can pick up a fun harbor cruise and tour the historic paddle steamer, Mannheim , now a museum dedicated to the history of navigation on the Rhine.

Mannheim Map - Tourist Attractions

The Pfälzer Wald, or Palatinate Forest, is a heavily wooded upland region located on the left bank of the Upper Rhine. Covering an area of 1,770 square kilometers, it's one of the largest expanses of forest in Germany and completely surrounds towns such as Kaiserslautern and Pirmasens .

The hills rise very gradually from the Saar basin in the west and then fall steeply down to the Rhine plain in the east, with many of the highest peaks, such as the Kalmit at 673 meters, crowned by the ruins of old castles.

Much of the region has now been designated as a nature preserve. Known as the Palatinate Forest Nature Park (Naturpark Pfälzerwald), this area of outstanding natural beauty features many excellent trails, making it a wonderful place to spend time hiking and biking. Other popular outdoor activities and adventures to enjoy here include camping, birdwatching, ziplining, and rock climbing.

On the eastern border of the Palatinate Forest lies the little town of Wachenheim , a community that is well-known for its grape-growing traditions and old-world charm. Here, the top attractions are the ruins of the Wachtenburg Castle (Burg Wachenheim) with its spectacular views over the Rhine Valley and surrounding forests, as well as Schloss Wachenheim, dating from 1730.

Southwest of Wachenheim, the Kurpfalz-Park is a fun family-friendly amusement park that's home to an assortment of rides and attractions as well as a fun summertime toboggan run, a mountain coaster, and other fun activities. Mere minutes from Wachenheim, the spa town of Bad Durkheim is also along the grape-growing route and is famous for its curative mineral springs.

Spa Town: Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden, the capital of the Land of Hesse, lies at the foot of the wooded Taunus hills and is as famous for its many thermal springs as it is for its beautiful surroundings. The town's name literally translates to "meadow baths" and can trace its rich history as a spa and tourist town down the centuries.

Evidence of the importance of its spas and baths is evident everywhere, from the spectacular Fountain Colonnade in Kurbezirk to the famous Kurhaus , an imposing building built in 1907, which boasts a massive Ionic portico.

Beyond the Kurhaus is the Aukammtal spa district , with its numerous thermal baths and saunas, along with the Kochbrunnen , home to 15 springs with average temperatures of 66 degrees Celsius, and the Kaiser Friedrich Baths , dating from 1913.

Also of interest is the magnificent Biebrich Palace ( Biebrich Schloss ). Built between 1698-1744, this beautiful edifice is a superb example of Baroque architecture. Also notable is the Neroberg , a 245-meter-high hill with its conspicuous Greek Chapel and the Opel Baths .

Wiesbaden also offers a number of excellent accommodation options, including numerous luxury hotels and resorts, many with spas of their own. Locations such as Radisson Blu Schwarzer Bock Hotel Wiesbaden and Dorint Pallas Wiesbaden make excellent choices for those looking to extend their stay in this wonderful part of the world.

Wiesbaden Central Area Map - Tourist Attractions

Koblenz, the former residence of the Electors of Trier, lies in a beautiful location at the junction of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. One of the best places to visit in Germany for those who appreciate historic architecture, the Old Town area boasts numerous well-preserved historic attractions, from the spectacular fortress of Ehrenbreitstein to the Neoclassical Koblenz Schloss , built in 1786 by the last Elector.

Another important fortification to explore is Stolzenfels Castle (Schloss Stolzenfels), a picturesque structure built in the 19th century just outside Koblenz that boasts an equally attractive park-like setting and gardens. Other historic highlights are St. Castor's Church , founded in 836 CE, and where the Treaty of Verdun was signed in 843 CE, which divided up the Carolingian empire.

One of the city's most famous locations, however, is the German Corner , or Deutsches Eck, the narrow tongue of land between the Rhine and the Mosel. Watching these two mighty rivers converge here is a truly inspiring sight, one that's marked appropriately by the Monument to German Unity .

Other interesting things to do in Koblenz include paying a visit to the Deutschherrenhaus , the remains of a castle of the Teutonic Order. This impressive fortification also serves as a popular spot during the summer for its evening music concerts.

Also fun is taking the new Koblenz cable car (Seilbahn Koblenz). Opened in 2010, this first-rate cable car experience travels between the river and Ehrenbreitstein castle, with plenty of great views to enjoy along the way.

Braubach and Marksburg Castle

Located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage section of the Rhine Valley, the picturesque old town of Braubach, on the east bank of the river, is the most northerly of the region's many pretty towns. With its wonderfully crooked old streets and alleyways lined with their medieval half-timbered buildings, it's a delightful place to explore on foot.

Other highlights include the 13th-century Barbarakirche church, the 11th-century Martinskapelle chapel, as well as surviving sections of the Old Town walls.

At the center of the town, perched high atop a hill that towers over the surrounding area, sits Marksburg Castle (Schloss Marksburg). Built in 1117, it has the distinction of being the only hilltop fortress in the Rhine Valley to have survived intact, and is widely regarded as one of the most important castles in Germany.

You can easily spend hours exploring the castle and its grounds, highlights of which include its four-story chapel tower, the great hall, and batteries of old cannons. Of special interest is the castle's splendid interior, which can be enjoyed as part of a 50-minute guided tour (English language tours are available). There's also an on-site gift shop, and fun medieval-themed dining is offered close by.

Address: 56338 Braubach

Boppard

The Rhine's importance to the Romans is nowhere more evident than in the charming town of Boppard. It was here, some 2,000 years ago, that they set up a fortress to guard the river. Evidence of this and later Roman fortifications can still be seen in the Roman Fort , or castrum, widely considered one of the best-preserved late-antiquity fortresses in Europe.

Highlights of this 4th-century site are the remains of its 28 semi-circular towers, as well as the large sections of old wall that rise in places as high as nine meters. In its heyday, this once-massive structure covered an area of 12 acres. Not only can you wander this ancient fortress, you can also view important relics from its excavation in the town's museum.

The town's first Christian church was also built here, a site now occupied by the late Romanesque St. Severus Church. Another old building to visit is the 15th-century Ritter-Schwalbach-Haus , the former home of members of the town's aristocracy.

Boppard is also a popular getaway destination for those who like to shop, and also offers a good selection of hotels for those wanting to extend their stay. Popular options include the 4-star riverside Bellevue Rheinhotel , as well as Das Ebertor , a hotel and hostel that's popular for those on a tight budget.

It's also a popular spot for those looking to enjoy a good meal. One of the most popular Boppard restaurants is GedeonsEck (or Gedeon's Corner), named after the 240-meter-tall hill on which it's perched.

And, getting there is half the fun. Most visitors choose to arrive via the 20-minute ride aboard the Sesselbahn Boppard chairlift. This gives you the chance to save your energy and linger a while after dining to enjoy the panoramic views over the largest bend in the Rhine river.
