Charleston, South Carolina

Soak up some Southern charm in genteel Charleston, named the region's best city by Southern Living  magazine for the third year in a row. Attractions such as the Fort Sumter National Monument and Gibbes Museum of Art offer senior discounts, while strolls along the waterfront and past gracious homes are free. One big draw is Spoleto Festival USA, an annual performing arts event (May 25 to June 11, 2023) that has traditionally offered 10% off senior tickets for select performances. Save more by booking early or attending Piccolo Spoleto, a companion festival featuring regional artists. Accommodations in spring and fall — the best times for avoiding the sweltering summer heat — start at less than $80 a night.

Branson, Missouri

This vacation town deep in the Ozark Mountains has been talked up everywhere from Forbes  to The New York Times . Take in country music shows and concerts, hit the links for a round of golf, cruise the lakes, explore the History of Fishing Museum, and just plain relax. Elvis fans should plan a spring visit for the annual Elvis festival (March 15-17, 2024). The Maritimes, Canada

The Maritimes are Canada's eastern provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. Take a ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (the fare can be as low as $31 for seniors during the off-season) or drive north to New Brunswick. There's no shortage of outdoor adventure, including whale watching at eye level on a Zodiac boat. Halifax's Pier 21, the Canadian Ellis Island, stirs memories for immigrants, and historic hotels such as the Algonquin Resort and Digby Pines Golf Resort & Spa may take seniors back to childhood vacations. Summer is the best time to visit, although that's when prices are at their highest.

Wilmington, North Carolina

City and seashore fun are rolled into one in Wilmington, which has been hailed as a U.S. destinations on the rise. It boasts three nearby beaches and a Riverwalk with shops and restaurants. Go at sunset for a memorable view of the Cape Fear River and walk down memory lane with visits to historic homes, museums, and the Battleship Carolina. Many attractions are free, including two nearby state parks, the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History, the Hanover County Arboretum, and the North Carolina Azalea Festival, coming April 12-16, 2023. Those that charge admission usually offer senior discounts. There are six public golf courses and fishing off public piers. Shoulder-season rates on accommodations are available in spring and fall starting as low as $64 a night at budget hotel chains (but expect to find more rooms at $90 or $100).

Among the many benefits of  membership with AARP  are discounts on travel as well as savings on scores of senior products and services. Expedia even hosts a dedicated AARP Travel Center.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Plymouth and the surrounding county are a choice destination for history buffs , especially in the spring before the crowds arrive. Pilgrim Hall Museum, the oldest museum in the country, displays artifacts that arrived with the Mayflower, as well as a piece of Plymouth Rock that visitors can touch. Historic walking tours are typically offered April to November, and 17th century houses that belonged to some of the original 101 Mayflower passengers are now museums and charge no or modest entry fees. Outdoor adventures include whale watching, harbor and lobster cruises, and journeys through the 100-year-old Cape Cod Canal. Nightly accommodations at budget hotels start at about $125 in the spring.

Yakima, Washington

Yakima was selected as one of " America's Best Small Cities on the Rise " a few years ago by SmarterTravel and still has what got it there, including downtown craft breweries and more than 120 wineries (many award-winning) in the surrounding areas. Seniors will enjoy the small-town prices, farmers market, and "u-pick" farms. Mountain passes about 30 minutes away offer hiking trails along the back side of Mount Rainier. Tenerife, Canary Islands

The Spanish island of Tenerife attracts seniors with year-round warm weather, an outstanding diversity of landscapes, and good value, especially now that the euro is more or less on par with the dollar — prices generally are lower here than on the continent. The island's quality hotels, roads, and medical facilities make it a well-equipped and appealing alternative to more popular European destinations, and travelers can reach the island from more than 180 cities. Round-trip packages from New York City, including four nights at a 5-star property, start at $900 a person. Go in spring and fall to avoid the crowds.

Adirondack Mountains, New York

Ditch the big-city excitement  and head upstate to the serenely magnificent Adirondacks. Whether you're active or sedentary, winter and summer sports, cultural events, shopping, and more can keep you busy for days on end. Several communities host winter carnivals, and miles of scenic byways and country roads beckon adventurous drivers. Unparalleled leaf peeping  in the largest publicly protected area in the continental United States draws crowds in the fall. Hop aboard a Trailways bus and save 10% on the fare just for being a senior. Lodging discounts for seniors are available as well. Blue Mountain Rest in Adirondack State Park, for example, shaves up to 35% off the weekend rate for a longer weekday stay for those over 62 and paying cash.

Roanoke, Virginia

There are reasons why Roanoke, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, was named one of the South's " Best Places to Retire " by Southern Living magazine: the temperate climate, easy hikes through lush forest, and farm-to-table cuisine to name just a few. Antiques and art are plentiful and local wineries are making a name for themselves. A lower-than-average cost of living  commends the locale as a place to vacation as well as to live. Off-season lodging rates start at less than $90 a night even for hotels with some of the highest ratings in online reviews.

Hendricks County, Indiana

Hendricks County, a western suburb of Indianapolis, has become a popular place for empty nesters. It boasts arts and cultural activities, recreational options, and attractions such as the Oasis Diner, a 1954-era eating spot in Plainfield that's been restored to its original luster. Visit Hendricks County , the local destination marketing organization, specializes in planning affordable package tours, demonstrations, and workshops for senior groups often organized around themes. 

Estes Park, Colorado

There's plenty to keep active seniors busy at the YMCA of the Rockies , which stretches over more than 800 acres surrounded on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park: archery lessons, swimming, a rock climbing wall, ropes challenge courses, zip lining, a craft and design center (think ceramics, jewelry, and basket weaving), fishing, ice skating in winter, miniature golf, horseback riding, and campfires with s'mores. Mazatlán, Mexico

All-inclusive resorts are plentiful and even some of the higher-rated hotels can cost less than $160 a person per night. The beaches are beautiful and there are historic attractions to explore, as well as hiking, bird-watching, and all sorts of water sports. Off-season here is spring and fall, specifically April and May and October and November.

Off season travel discounts are among the best senior discounts.

Taking advantage of your time flexibility can give older travelers great savings on rental accommodations.

Many tourist locations have off-season rates. You will have a better chance of avoiding the crowds of the main season and often get better service at hotels and restaurants.

Your trip will include a less crowded visit to a beach, a museum, a golf course and basically your entire itinerary.

If you visit Costa Rica, you will benefit from low season rates during May or November. We found that the sunny skies will be complemented by 10% to 40% lower rates.

Group and club travel.

Another alternative for some of the best senior discount is to take advantage of the group rates available to members of travel groups for seniors   and travel clubs for seniors . 

Solo travelers, traveling in a group receive socialization as well as discounts. Group travel hosts have senior vacation packages and vacations for seniors on a budget.

The groups can be free but the clubs charge a small fee for membership.

Please understand that these airline deals are not always available on-line. They do not always apply to every flight destination. Always call the airline directly if interested in receiving this type of discount.

Booking flights on Monday through Wednesday will save on airfare.

6 Airline Travel Tips to Save Money

• Book Winter flights in the Summer. (Just as Winter coats go on sale in the Summer, so do Airline flights.
• Book One-way flights rather than Roud-trip flights. (You can save $100 - $200)
• Use your Points or Miles. (Make sure you're getting the best; you should get at least 2 cents per point)
• Check fares for nearby airports from your destination.
• Travel on the actual holiday themselves (Could be 30% - 40$ cheaper)

Amtrak offers a 10% discount on rail fares to travelers over age 65 in the United States.

For those traveling across the border to or from Canada, Amtrak offers a 10% discount to those over age 60.

Using rail travel to get to your destination of choice is a relaxing way to travel and something to consider are Amtrak's vacation packages including weekend trips.

Bus Travel Discounts

Trailways   offers a 10% discount to seniors age 65 and over. There is also a half-fare promotion on select routes for seniors and those with a disabilities. 

House exchanges

Why not list your house with a house exchange?

One of the best deals is the Lifetime Senior Pass for United States citizens.

It will provide you with free entry into all National Parks in North America for the rest of your life.

If you are on a fixed budget you can obtain a Yearly Senior Pass for entry into all of the National Parks for $20 for one year.

Besides giving entrance to the National Parks, your camping fee is reduced by 50%.

AARP members receive a 10% discount at some campgrounds.

Disneyland & Disney World

Disneyland and Disney World do not have discount tickets for seniors. However, you can buy them from a ticket broker because these brokers often have the lowest prices on legitimate Disneyland & Disney World tickets.

Some senior citizen organizations can occasionally offer special discounts.

AARP Discounts

The AARP membership gives a variety of discounts on just about everything travel related.  Membership provides savings on rentals, air fair, cruises, tours, and vacation packages You need to join for an annual membership.

For convenience, AARP provides senior members with an AARP card to present to hotels, airlines, cruises, car rentals, bus lines, campgrounds and many more to receive discounts.

Volunteer Trips

Many older adults have time on our hands and wish to put those hands to good use. If so, think about a volunteer trip that might offer free housing and food in exchange for your help.

Best Senior Travel Destinations in 2024

With COVID-19 vaccination rates on the rise, it looks like this summer will be safer for travel than the last one. Especially if you and your loved ones are vaccinated, there’s no reason you can’t get out of the house and explore what the country has to offer.

No matter what your budget or style preference, there’s a vacation destination for you. The following senior travel destinations are some of my personal favorites, in addition to those of our staff writers.

1. US National Parks

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. For more details on what any of these parks can offer in the way of accommodations, tours, classes, and other recreational activities, check out the National Park Service website. Also, be sure to look into the national park pass for seniors .

2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV, then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. Keep in mind that there are those who say the best time to visit this lovely, sunny city is from September to November when the temperatures are most comfortable for the majority of folks. No matter when you go, though, take your sunscreen.

The Best Months to Travel in the Best Years of Your Life

As a senior living out your retirement, you are no longer burdened with a work rigid schedule or the challenges that come with back-to-school activities. August: The World Is Calling

A cost-effective way to check off “exotic world travel” from your bucket list is to book your dream vacation for mid-to-late August. Prices start to drop as tourists head home.

While the Mediterranean countries are still basking in the hot sun, the Scandinavian countries, with their comfortable temperatures and Northern Lights, make memorable travel destinations.

August is the vacation month for many Europeans, so crowds on the streets of Paris and London start thinning. Europe offers a wealth of urban delights such as Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary, or Vienna in Austria. Since you have the luxury of leisure, instead of a hectic tour of 10 cities in 10 days, pick one spectacular location and savor the sights. Linger in the outdoor cafes. Enjoy a less demanding itinerary.

Closer to home, golfers and anglers will find the mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England abound with the top-rated greens, fast-moving streams, and quaint little towns.

Splurge with an overnight at a local B&B or a couple’s day at a spa. The latest trend in B&B hospitality includes fresh-from-the-garden meals.

With no school groups to crowd your view, enjoy the exhibits at local museums, historic homes, or gardens. Some of the best reasons to retire to Pennsylvania are also the best reasons to visit! Imagine exploring your nation’s birthplace without fighting traffic and waiting in line with other summertime tourists.

Check out end-of-the-season group rentals. Beaches and lakes make an inviting girls-only trip.

Travel Tip #1: Be sure to wear flats on cobblestone streets. Use the hotel safe for your valuables, passport, etc.

September: Water Temperatures Are Ideal, Crowds Have Checked Out

September may be the perfect month to head to the beach, as temperatures, crowds, and lodging prices all tend to start dropping around this time of year. Your only company on the sand may be a flock of seagulls and a few treasure hunters. There will be no long waits at restaurants. Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

Take a drive or bus ride through the countryside before the leaf peepers jam the roads. Don’t miss the antique stores and roadside produce stands along the way. Local apple orchards often include a taste of fresh-made cider, slices of apple pie, and bags of your favorite Macs (not the computer!).

Bring back childhood memories with a trip to a country fair. Take a selfie with a prize-winning sheep, thrill to the roar of tractor pulls, or enjoy a nostalgic ride on a merry-go-round. Of course, you’ll ruin your diet with the pleasure of sampling funnel cakes, sausage smothered in onions and peppers, and cotton candy. But what are vacations for if not letting loose and enjoying life?

Organize your own bus trip. Limousine rental companies welcome mini-bus or six-passenger town car rentals during the week. Gather a group of history buffs, art lovers, or other like-minded day-trippers and split the rental. You are the masters of your travel itinerary and can stop along the way at cute stores and eateries.

Travel Tip #2: Leave your expensive jewelry at home.

October: Harvest Celebrations Abound

October brings harvest season, Octoberfest merriment, and dozens of other reasons to get out of the recliner. Check your local newspaper for all the Fall events in your area or enjoy a vacation filled with crisp autumn sights, sounds, and smells.

All nature lovers must experience the beauty of the northeast’s changing seasons. The vibrant colors of the leaves mixed with a slight chill and warm cider are enough to make anyone giddy to pull out their plaid and travel to Pennsylvania, New York, or Connecticut. Rent a cabin and make a week or weekend of it!

Combine a visit with grandkids and a weekday tour. While the kids are in school, explore the local area. Make a family visit an opportunity to expand your horizons.

Senior Safety Travel Tip: Don’t hesitate to tell your innkeeper or hotel concierge your itinerary. Tell them where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Keep a cell phone on you at all times, along with your hotel and family contact information.

Retirement should be some of the best years of your life! Open yourself up to new experiences and new possibilities. You’ve worked to build the world we live in, now it’s time to pick your head up and experience it.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and many elect to travel solo. Our small groups are a mix of genders and ages between 18 and 70, with like-minded travelers from all over the world.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips (excluding family trips), the minimum age for travelers is 15. An adult must accompany all children under 18.

Our overland trips have a minimum age of 18.

Kiddos younger than 15 can join us on our family trips and Short Break Adventures , but make sure to check each trip for its minimum age.

Most trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a self-assessment form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes to a minimum. Small groups allow us to remain flexible with itineraries, use public transportation wherever we can and visit communities without intimidating the locals.

Most Intrepid trips run with an intimate group of 12-16 travelers, though they usually average around 10 people.

Our overland trips use purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed in the description of each trip.

Is it okay that I'm travelling alone?

Absolutely! The beauty of the Intrepid style of travel is that many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. Please carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips, you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can, we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact us for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travelers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travelers from these regions who decline travel insurance when traveling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

3 Days in Saint Petersburg Russia: My Perfect 3-Day Saint Petersburg Itinerary

Saint Petersburg is one of Russia’s largest and most exciting cities, offering visitors thousands of things to do, including museums, palaces, beautiful parks, historical sites, and world-class theatre. Discover all the sights and delights the cultural capital of Russia has to offer with my 3-day Saint Petersburg itinerary.

With all these options, planning a trip to Saint Petersburg can be a bit overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors. I’ve put together a recommended 3-day Saint Petersburg itinerary that will help you see the city’s highlights if you have at least 3 days in Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg is a budget-friendly destination that promises historical immersion and exquisite architecture at half the price of that in Western Europe.

My suggested 3-day itinerary has you visiting all the city’s most famous attractions (e.g., the atmospheric Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, the Winter Palace, the Hermitage Museum) as well as some of the city’s lesser-known attractions. In addition to the 3-day itinerary, I also provide tips on how to get around Saint Petersburg and tips on where to eat and stay during your 3 days in Saint Petersburg.

3 Days in Saint Petersburg Itinerary | The Perfect 72 Hours in Saint Petersburg

Saint petersburg, russia in 3 days – day 1.

Start with an early morning walk along Nevsky Avenue from Vosstaniya Square to the Admiralty Building. The first point of interest is the Hero-City obelisk next to the Moskovsky railway station commemorating the victory of Soviet people over the Nazis. The lovely views will put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. Stop for a nice cappuccino at one of the bars near Gostiny Dvor, a Russian alternative to the French Passage. Enjoy the sight of the old Anichkov Bridge, the oldest bridge over the Fontanka River.

Then make your way to the neoclassical St. Isaac’s Cathedral. It’s a good idea to climb to its colonnade’s observation platform. It means that you get a panoramic view of the St.Petersburg and the refreshing breeze in the summertime.

In St. Isaac’s Cathedral you can admire the interior that boasts more than 300 paintings, mosaics, sculptures, various kinds of precious stones and gilding. The walls of the Cathedral are faced with fine Italian and Russian varieties of marble and other stones: malachite, lapis lazuli, porphyry. St. Isaac’s Cathedral, for example, is otherwise known as the “Museum of stones”.

What Motivates People to Travel

Just a stone’s throw away from St. Isaac’s Cathedral you’ll find the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum. These are the most famous attractions in St. Petersburg and you simply can’t miss them. Spend some time taking awesome pictures of the Palace Square, then continue your walking tour of St Petersburg toward the Spit of Vasilevsky Island.

Here you’ll find red Rostral Columns decorated with bronze anchors and four pairs of bronze ship prows. Ah, don’t miss out on visiting the KunstKamera, arguably the weirdest museum in the world.

End your first day in Saint Petersburg exploring the Peter and Paul Fortress. The mighty that never served its purpose to protect the city sits on a narrow strip of land at the mouth of the Neva river. Hare’s island is home to a plethora of various buildings, museums, and exhibitions both permanent and temporary. Although, these do not always reflect the specific history of the fortress itself.

Be sure to make your way down to the Neva River. Here you can have a take a leisurely stroll along the mighty granite walls and mingle with locals.

Saint Petersburg, Russia in 3 days – Day 2

First things first. You can’t visit Saint Petersburg without seeing the real Dutch and Flemish Painting in the Hermitage Museum. It’s worth the trip but book ahead, and allow yourself at least two hours. A good place for a coffee and a pastry is Hermitage Cafe in the General Staff building. Pop over to the Field of Mars to have a look at ordinary people spending their leisure time and the first eternal flame in the country.

If you are a history buff, visit the Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad. a former monastery filled with atmospheric early Renaissance frescoes painted by Fra’ Angelico. The permanent exhibition features the history of the city during the 900-day Blockade, which lasted from 8 September 1941 to 17 January 1944. It goes without saying that this is a very sobering, and unique place to visit for thought-provoking entertainment.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Russia

Then walk along Moika Embankment towards Chizhyk Pyzhik sculpture (pine siskin), and from there take a stroll through the Michael Garden (Mikhaylovskiy Sad) to reach the Church of the Savior on Blood. Admire the ornate cupolas of the Cathedral, otherwise known as ‘Spas Na Krovi‘. It was built on the very spot that Alexander II had been assassinated on March 1, 1881. You can also admire the Cathedral’s interior from inside – walls and ceilings are completely covered in intricate mosaics and paintings.

Nevsky Avenue and adjoining Griboyedov Canal are full of lovely little shops to browse in. At the intersection of Griboyedov Canal and Nevsky Avenue, you’ll find several cozy restaurants offering a wide array of dining options.

In the afternoon, head along to the Alexander Garden to see the Monuments and the Bronze Horseman; a monument to Peter the Great) next to the Admiralty building. From there take a subway ride (Admiralteyskaya station) and go see the impressive Narva Triumphal Arch. Definitely one of the most underrated attractions in St Petersburg.

This remarkable roman arch is made of bricks and covered with copper sheets for the facades. There are four columns on the front side, two on each side of the arch, chariot on the top and the two statues of ancient Russian warriors. The square around the arch is a lively spot in a summer evening too.

Saint Petersburg 3-day itinerary – Day 3

While St Petersburg is a perfectly walkable city, the main streets can get quite crowded in high-season. However, there is always an escape to one of the royal suburbs.

Spend the third day of your 3 days in St. Petersburg taking day trips to Peterhof and/or Pushkin.

Peterhof has many intricate fountains, the highlight being the Samson Fountain with the lion. The sculpture celebrates the Russian victories, especially the victory over Sweden, whose coat-of-arms contains the figure of a lion. Peterhof Park and gardens are a vast area behind the palace where you can spend a few hours to escape the crowds.

Should you choose, I recommend heading to Peterhof in summer. The former royal residence of Peterhof sits some 30 minutes by hydrofoil from the Hermitage Embankment. Peterhof consists of a series of palaces, gardens and the Grand Cascade that makes the city an extremely popular destination in summer. If you are here during the summer, check out the palace’s many fountains. Remember, the fountains are only operational from May to September and aren’t functioning during winter. Peterhof is most quickly accessible via minibus from a St. Petersburg suburb, but most easily accessible via direct train from Baltiysky railway station.

Alternatively, sightseers and culture seekers can visit Pushkin – home to a Catherine Palace and the famous Amber Room. I actually visited both Pushkin and Peterhof and it’s nearly impossible to choose between these two amazing places. Keep in mind, during the public holidays both cities can be quite packed with locals. So you may want to visit the Catherine Palace in autumn or winter when it’s much less crowded.

Where to Stay in Saint Petersburg

You’ll be spoiled for choice among Saint Petersburg accommodation options. The city offers everything from luxurious hotels with their own rooftop bars to more affordable budget hotels that put you within 25 minutes of Moskovskaya railway station. No matter what your budget, you’ll be able to find the perfect St Petersburg hostel within easy reach of downtown. Check Railway Capsules . This report shows international travel and accommodation used by HM Treasury senior officials at Senior Civil Service 2 (SCS2) (or equivalent) and above. The report includes bookings made through departments’ central booking systems. This will include the majority of travel undertaken. However, individuals may have booked a small number of journeys through other systems. Work is ongoing to ensure that this data is incorporated into future reports.

Some data may have been redacted if it was deemed that publishing it could impact on national or personal security.

During the transition from the previous reporting systems, please be aware that some travel data for civil servants at SCS3 and above is still published on  www.data.gov.uk .
