Phish Bring ‘90s Bust-Outs and Expansive Jams to Dick’s Night Two

Phish Bring ‘90s Bust-Outs and Expansive Jams to Dick’s Night Two

Last night, Aug. 30, Phish sent off the summer with the finest and final performances of its summer tour. In the second night of its adored annual dog days series at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., the band made good use of the monumental momentum it’s accrued since its tour outset on July 20, delivering two thrilling sets easily in the contest for their most thrilling show of the year so far. Beyond top-tier treatments of essential originals, Friday’s show was distinguished by some expansive, entrancing jams and two bust-outs, which clearly stand out against the relatively stable rotation that the group carefully honed across its latest road trip.

Phish jumped into night two at Dick’s with a chugging, high-speed run of the locomotive classic “Back on the Train,” From this steady, but coyly adventurous opening, the band continued into a high-spirited “Wolfman’s Brother,” which launched the first extended improvisatory section of the evening as the band found some spring major-key moments in the 1994 standout’s gritty funk structure. After some considerable builds and bold tech meddling from all four members, Phish followed the funk into the slinking streetbeater of “Hey Stranger,” which has rapidly edged out from the tracklist of Evolve , the quartet’s 16th studio album, to become a setlist staple and fan favorite.

The band tossed out its first curveball of the evening with the ensuing “Guelah Papyrus,” issuing the highlight from A Picture of Nectar for the first time since July 22, 2022 and closing a gap of 105 shows. This surprise brought spirits high for “No Men In No Man’s Land,” which provided a thoughtfully realized jam vehicle from its frequent set one position. After the band fluently communicated without words, trading the primary voice and bolstering dense, synth-drenched soundscapes with stuttering polyrhythms from Jon Fishman, it moved from an unexpectedly abrupt closure into an unexpectedly lengthy “Steam.”

The second Evolve cut from night two came with the title track, a straight-ahead but undeniably precise run that led on into the second bust out of the evening. In its first staging since July 29, 2022, “Strange Design” found a mellow, meditative fluttering heartbeat in the 1995 deep cut, restoring the Billy Breathes outtake to glory as a well-placed moment of reprieve after an even 100 shows. Having returned to center, the band sprinted away again with “Run Like an Antelope,” which raced through hard-funking, headily technical and emotionally soaring sections to close out the first frame.

“Chalk Dust Torture” exploded out of the set break, setting high expectations for the night’s latter half within its first notes. The final jam section of this regular face-melter went as big as anyone could hope for, stacking brick after brick of pedal manipulation and fervent ripping to erect a towering edifice of dark dissonance, repeatedly teasing some bright-eyed relief before turning once again to the treatment’s moody, dissonant ground floor. Tensions mounted as the band worked out towards the light and then veered into Type II shadow again and again; by the twenty-minute mark, the quartet finally gave way, peeling away some fuzz to reach bold, inspiring major key peaks as the song would to its conclusion at the 27-minute mark.

After the longest song of the evening, Phish moved into “Sand,” which opened as a rocker defined by confidence and tact and easily. This certified staple found its experimental side by carefully cultivating space, then furnishing it with some fiery charges and deep synchronization shared Page McConnell and Mike Gordon. “Ruby Waves” returned the band to the bold and gloomy psychedelia of “Chalk Dust,” flagging between some race-pace speeding past the song’s regular temp and slow sulk into some sparse and heavy passages.

With one last crash of synths, the band left “Ruby Waves” unfinished to bring on “What’s the Use?” Trey Anastasio planted a moment of peace here with some spacey, surfy tones that guided a seraphic mid-section. From some rapturous peaks, the band sought structure again with an undeniably exuberant “Possum” and the ever-inspiring and optimistic “Everything’s Right,” which closed out the main portion of the show on a high note.

Once the band had taken its well-earned bows, it rallied again for a pitch-perfect encore, comprising the first “Fee” since Feb. 25, 2023, which saw Anastasio belting into a megaphone, and “You Enjoy Myself,” which snuck one last instrumental hurrah in after the vocal jam. Phish returns to Dick’s tonight, and will close out its summer tour with a last show on Sunday, Sept. 1. For more information on these shows, visit phish.com/tours . Fans can stream the Dick’s series and other performances from the summer via LivePhish .

ABOUT PHISH:

Phish – Trey Anastasio (guitar, vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, vocals), and Page McConnell (keyboards, vocals) – has earned one of music's most dedicated fan communities for its blend of idiosyncratic songcraft, extended improvisation, and immersive live performances, all fusing a variety of genres into their own freewheeling sound and vision.

Formed in 1983 in Burlington, VT, Phish has released 15 studio albums, beginning with 1989's Junta and continuing through 2020's Sigma Oasis, released on the band's own JEMP Records. In 2002, the band launched LivePhish, which offers high-quality soundboard recordings of every show, regular releases from Phish's substantial archive, and 4k live webcasts. LivePhish+, the band's streaming service, is the most successful artist-driven service of its kind, offering unlimited on-demand access to the entire LivePhish catalog.

Widely recognized among live music's most beloved and inventive artists, Phish has played over 2,000 shows since their formation, regularly selling out multiple nights at arenas, amphitheaters, and stadiums across North America including such annual traditions as sold-out Labor Day weekend runs at Dick's Sporting Goods Park soccer stadium outside of Denver, Halloween extravaganzas, and four-night New Year's Eve celebrations at NYC's world-famous Madison Square Garden.

To date, Phish have performed 83 sold-out shows at The Garden since their debut performance there in 1994. In 2017, Phish performed The Bakers' Dozen, a 13-night concert series that saw the band play 237 unique songs, repeating none during the entire run. The 13 shows concluded with Phish being presented with a banner commemorating the unprecedented series, which hangs in The Garden's rafters.

In 1996, Phish presented The Clifford Ball, the first of 10 self-produced festivals, held on the decommissioned Plattsburgh Air Force Base in upstate New York, and influenced a new generation of American rock festivals including Bonnaroo among others. Phish marked the turn of the millennium with a New Year's Eve festival at Florida's Big Cypress Indian Reservation, drawing a record-setting attendance of 80,000 people, playing an historic seven-hour set, culminating at dawn on New Year's Day.

In 1997, Phish founded The WaterWheel Foundation to oversee the band's various charitable activities, harnessing the kindness of the Phish fan community to create positive change. WaterWheel fulfills this mission by collecting donations for local nonprofit organizations in association with Phish tour dates via WaterWheel's Touring Division. WaterWheel also supports non-profits based in Phish's home state of Vermont, especially those focused on cleaning up the Lake Champlain watershed.

WaterWheel chooses beneficiaries from a wide sphere of causes including those working to protect the environment, promote social justice, fight food insecurity, provide music education, register voters, and those that help women and children, the homeless, and others in need. Phish recently performed two benefit concerts at Saratoga Springs, NY's Broadview Stage at SPAC, raising over $3.5M for flood recovery efforts in Vermont and Upstate New York. Get your air guitars and air vacuums ready, Phans.

Legendary jam band Phish announced they’ll be hitting the road this summer for a nationwide tour from July through September.

That includes three back-to-back-to-back gigs at Bethel, NY’s Bethel Woods Center For The Arts on Aug. 9-11.

Multi-day stints at venues aren’t an anomaly for this tour; based on our findings, Trey Anastasio and co. are scheduled to bring their improvisatory brand of rock to Massachusetts , Wisconsin , Missouri , Indiana and Colorado for three or four nights as well.

That’s not all, though.

Phish is also hosting a residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere from April 19-22 and putting on their own Mondegreen Festival in Dover, DE on Aug. 15-18.

For those that can’t wait to scoop up tickets to bliss out with the band, we’re here to lend a helping hand.

Although inventory for the newly announced concerts aren’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, March 15, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Been dreaming of seeing Phish live in Sin City?

Here’s how much the cheapest tickets will run you for single and multi-day tickets (hint: they’re cheaper than they were when we last reported on prices in December 2023 ).

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

From Aug. 15-18, Phish will headline the Mondegreen Festival in Dover, DE.

The four-day fest includes “an abundance of on-site camping…interactive fan experiences, specially curated regional food and drink, art installations, and much more,” according to the band’s Instagram.

You can grab four-day passes for the musical extravaganza here .

On top of the tour, Trey will strike out on his own this summer as well with the Trey Anastasio Band.

All shows will take place in May; notable stops include the BeachLife Festival , Boston Calling and a three-night stay at Brooklyn Steel from May 21-23.

Click here for a closer look at Anastasio’s 2024 tour calendar.

Part of the fun of seeing Phish live is the surprises the band has in store for fans.

Still, it can’t hurt to take a peek at what made the cut recently.

For a closer look, here’s the complete history of what Phish has played live — dating back to 1983 (!) — check out  Set List FM .

In December 2023, we spoke with comedian and Phan Max Fine about what it’s like to be at a Phish concert.

“It’s not like anything you’ve ever seen because it’s never happened before,” he explained.

“Every show is special and unique because they don’t plan for it. You get to be whoever you want at a Phish show.”

For more about the live experience, check out our conversation with Fine here .

While no band jams quite like Phish, here are five rollicking acts you may enjoy seeing live in the near future.

•  Rolling Stones

•  Dead and Company

•  Dave Matthews Band

•  Mt. Joy

•  The String Cheese Incident
