Penn State Lion Life

The penn state student experience as told by undergraduate admissions bloggers., 9 places to see on your first psu visit.

September 28, 2016 by Alexandra Maniglia Leave a Comment

Your first time on campus is such an exciting time. There are so many things to see, and your trip can only last so long (but don’t worry, you will have four more years here). That being said,  it’s important to make sure you visit some of the key places to get the ultimate Penn State experience!

penn state college park visit

  • Hands down, if you’re only able to visit one place on campus, you should make sure to visit the HUB. The HUB is pretty much the center of all things Penn State. There’s the Penn State Bookstore, the THON store, a state of the art radio station, and honestly anything you could imagine.  If you can avoid going around lunch time, you’ll be able to see all of the hustle and bustle of campus, without the huge lunch rush.

2. Pollock, Findlay, Waring, and South Commons

  • The dining halls, affectionately known as the commons, are where students living both on campus and off can come to study, grab food, or even play ping pong. These commons will most likely become your go-to dinner spots when you come to Penn State.

3. The Arboretum

penn state college park visit

  • If you plan on visiting the Creamery, the Arboretum is a must see while you’re on that side of campus. The Arboretum is full of incredible scenery and waterfalls alike. Nothing beats going there on a beautiful day!

4. Your Potential College’s Home Building

penn state college park visit

  • Visiting your college’s home building is a great thing to do if you’re able! Your college’s home building typically is where the college’s dean, professors and advising team are located. It’s a great idea to get acquainted with this building since you’ll most likely frequent it!

5. The Lion Shrine

penn state college park visit

  • If you’re on campus, you might as well take a picture to commemorate your exciting day! The Lion Shrine honors our beloved mascot, the Nittany Lion, and is a must-see while you’re exploring campus!

6. The Pattee and Paterno Libraries

  • The library is probably my favorite place on campus, and there’s an endless amount of new rooms to explore each time you walk through its halls. Not only are there some interesting rooms, there’s a cafe called McKinnon’s located in the basement, which is the perfect way to get you through your future study sessions!

7. McLanahans

  • McLanahans is packed on game day, so if you’re looking to see where you can get some Penn State attire, unique gifts for your friends and snacks, this is the place to be!

8. The Corner Room

  • The Corner Room is another Penn State staple. Located on Allen Street, this is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, or watch a snowstorm cover happy valley!

9. The Berkey Creamery

  • Who doesn’t love ice cream? I might be biased, but I’m pretty sure the creamery has some of the greatest ice cream on the planet. It’s the perfect way to treat yourself after your day of exploring campus!

We can’t wait for you to come visit our home away from home!

FAN INFORMATION, PARKING & PROMOTIONS

With the start of construction projects benefitting all 800+ student-athletes at Penn State, notably the construction of the Jeffrey Field Soccer Complex at the south end of the facility, elements of the Jeffrey Field match day experience have changed. To prepay for parking at a discounted rate, click here . Event day parking will be $10 at the main entrance to the lot.

Thursday night’s nationally ranked clash on Jeffrey Field will serve as the Penn State women’s soccer program’s annual March to the Match. One of the nation’s most electric college soccer atmospheres will feature the return of the Penn State student body to campus as a part of welcome week, with first-year students and their families invited to celebrate their first athletic event as Nittany Lions at Jeffrey Field. For members of the Park Avenue Army and other student organizations interested in marching to the match, fans are encouraged to meet at East Residence Halls between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. (ET), with the march set to begin at 4:45 p.m. (ET) from the East Quad. The first 300 students in attendance will receive a Nittany Lion women’s soccer t-shirt.

KICKIN’ IT

The Blue & White return to work following a dominant showing on opening night last Thursday, August 15, with then-fourth-ranked PSU dismantling eighth-ranked Texas Tech in a 4-0 result. Penn State called on four different goal scorers to produce the final line, highlighted by three student-athletes recording their first goals in a Nittany Lion kit. Penn State opened its season with a victory for the first time since the 2021 fall campaign, which kicked off with a 3-1 win over the UMass Minutemen on August 19 of that year. The Nittany Lions also secured the win in the first all-time meeting with Texas Tech, marking the program’s 20th win over a current Big 12 Conference opponent all-time.

In the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, released on Tuesday, August 20, Penn State improved to the No. 3 position in the nation following their dominant opening-night result in a top 10 clash. Penn State is the highest ranked team in the Big Ten Conference, leading a group of seven teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the poll. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress departed with the United States U-20 Women’s Youth National Team for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia last Sunday, August 18. The Nittany Lion shotstopper made headlines last week with a PK save late in the 4-0 shutout over Texas Tech, and will look to bring her individual momentum into the USYNT program over the next month.

JORDAN 11’S

Senior midfielder Jordan Fusco picked up national accolades following the first week of the season, appearing on the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week in the organization’s release Tuesday, August 20. A native of Olmsted Township, Ohio, Fusco arrived in Happy Valley last spring and made an instant impact for the Nittany Lions in her Penn State debut against Texas Tech. Fusco was the highest-scoring individual player in the win, with the newcomer logging both a goal and an assist in the match. Fusco opened the scoring in the 2024 season with a 17-yard left-footed banger in the seventh minute, later contributing an assist on a corner kick in the 17th. One of the headline women’s soccer transfers in the 2024 cycle, Fusco arrived in Happy Valley following a dominant trio of seasons at Tennessee. During her impressive career in Knoxville, Fusco totaled 38 points split between 14 total goals in addition to 10 assists, making 61 appearances and 53 starts in three years with the Lady Vols.

Next Up: #21 Virginia

COLLIDING WITH THE CAVALIERS

Under the leadership of longtime head coaching veteran Steve Swanson, the Virginia Cavaliers return to work in the 2024 campaign following an 8-3-6 season a year ago that included a 3-3-4 ledger in ACC competitions. The Cavaliers were not selected for the NCAA Tournament field in the postseason, ending one of the longest streaks of appearances in the nation. Virginia has used last season’s missed bid as successful motivation early this year, with the Cavaliers rolling to a pair of impressive 2-0 victories over Towson and B1G rival Northwestern. The Cavaliers are led on the pitch by a trio of goal scorers in Meredith McDermott, Maggie Cagle and Laughlin Ryan, in addition to an assist contributed by Yuna McCormack. Between the posts, goalkeeper Victoria Safradin has played all 180 minutes with a pair of shutouts and three saves overall.

STORY OF THE SERIES

Penn State and Virginia get set to square off in one of the most competitive high-profile non-conference series in women’s college soccer, with the all-time series split dead even by an 8-8-1 margin. PSU first squared off with Virginia in 1997, and last defeated the Cavaliers in 2021. The Nittany Lions and Cavaliers have split each of the last two meetings, with Virginia taking three of the last four contests overall. The Cavaliers have taking six of the last seven tests dating to 2013. PSU’s win in 2021 marked the highest-ranked upset for a Nittany Lion team since, with the 14th-ranked Nittany Lions downing third-ranked UVA in Charlottesville. The most recent meeting of the two teams came in the third round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, with Virginia logging a 3-2 upset of the Blue & White on Jeffrey Field. PSU took a 1-0 lead into halftime but the Cavaliers rallied to deadlock the match a 2-2, ultimately winning with a goal in the 94th minute.

penn state college park visit

Explore University Park

Welcome to Penn State University Park! As a transfer or change-of-campus student, you will be a new member of our University Park community in the fall. To help ensure you have the information you need to know before you arrive on campus, we are hosting virtual orientation opportunities throughout the summer—you can find more information about virtual orientation in your tasklist. Because we know you may want to visit University Park this summer in addition to attending your virtual orientation, we have created this website to help you plan your trip. You can use this website to customize a self-guided experience to explore the University Park campus before you arrive in the fall.

We’ve designed this webpage to help you plan for your visit to the University Park campus. Please note that these visits are optional, and at your own leisure. Because some offices and buildings may have different hours in the summer, we encourage you to reach out to any individuals you plan to meet with ahead of time to coordinate a meeting. Please do not expect that all offices and buildings will be open.

You can get started by clicking through the menu below.

Download Penn State Go on your mobile device: Penn State Go is an all-in-one mobile app that provides a custom campus experience for students. With GPS integration, this will also be one of the tools you use to navigate campus upon arrival. (Download here: mobile.psu.edu )

Plan Your Route: Don’t think of this visit as a campus tour, but rather, a self-guided expedition of Penn State University Park. Visit map.psu.edu and use the menu on the left to filter through the locations available on the map. This is a great opportunity to visit Points of Pride (landmark buildings), Academic and Administrative buildings (including the location of student service offices and classrooms), and to just see the campus. We’ve included instructions on using this feature below in the “during your visit” section of this page.

Customize Your Experience: You may have specific people you want to meet or places you want to visit. If so, be sure to reach out with plenty of time in advance to coordinate a meeting. Please note that not all individuals or resources will be able to accommodate a meeting request. If you aren’t sure who to see while you’re on campus, here are some options to consider:

Meet with an academic adviser from your college. If you have questions about your fall schedule or academic opportunities within your college, connecting with an adviser may be helpful. To view your new assigned academic adviser in your college, select “My Advisers” on the homepage of your LionPATH. If you do not have a new adviser in LionPATH yet, you can reach out to your college’s change-of-campus contact listed on this website (scroll halfway down the page to find the list of University Park colleges).

Discuss your education-related finances with Student Aid. You may have questions about your financial aid, scholarship opportunities, or work study, and the Student Aid office can help. You can find their contact information on their website .

Connect with the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC). The MRC supports students from diverse backgrounds and works to foster their success. Contact the MRC to meet with a counselor and understand the identity-based resources available to you.

Known particularly for its flagship University Park campus, Pennsylvania State University is home to 24 campuses in total, scattered throughout the state. It was founded in 1855, originally as Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania, and it is widely known as a prestigious public research university today.

So, how do you get into this “Public Ivy”?

In the 2020–2021 admissions cycle, 73,861 applied students applied to Penn State, and 40,031 were admitted, for an admissions rate of 54.2%.

Penn State is selective — one of the more competitive public universities — but your personal chances of admission vary according to your profile strength. To find out your real chances of admission, try our free admissions calculator . Not only will you find out your odds of acceptance, but you’ll also receive tips on how to improve your profile.

The average middle 50% GPA ranges for enrolled students are as follow:

  • University Park: 3.56-3.91 (unweighted)
  • All other campuses: 3.06-3.65

The average middle 50% standardized test scores for enrolled students are as follow:

  • University Park: 1280-1450
  • All other campuses: 1090-1300
  • University Park: 29-33
  • All other campuses: 23-30

At Penn State, selectivity varies according to campus, with University Park being the most competitive campus for admission. Some special programs are also more difficult to get into.

Your academic record is the most important part of your application, especially since Penn State does not consider factors like your application essay, recommendations, and extracurricular activities, unlike many other universities.

Also, pay attention to the requirements for high school coursework. These vary according to the individual college or school to which you’re applying.

How Penn State Evaluates Applications

According to Penn State’s 2020–21 Common Data Set, this factor “ very important ” in the admissions process:

  • Academic GPA

This is “ important ”:

  • Rigor of secondary school record

These are “ considered ”:

  • Standardized test scores
  • Talent/ability
  • Alumni/ae relation
  • Geographical residence
  • State residency
  • Racial/ethnic status
  • Application essay (pre-med only)

These are “ not considered ”:

  • Application essay
  • Recommendations
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Character/personal qualities
  • First generation
  • Religious affiliation/commitment
  • Volunteer work
  • Work experience
  • Level of applicant’s interest

Discover your chances at hundreds of schools

Our free chancing engine takes into account your history, background, test scores, and extracurricular activities to show you your real chances of admission—and how to improve them.

1. Achieve at least a 3.91 while taking the most challenging classes available

Many schools, especially large ones like Penn State, use the Academic Index, a metric combining academic factors, to evaluate applicants before considering other factors. Ensure you meet the minimum qualifications by attaining a high GPA.

Moreover, you should also challenge yourself by participating in the most rigorous curriculum available to you. If you have access to them, take several AP and honors courses each year. (Here’s some advice on how many APs students should aim for).

If your GPA is lower, and you’re earlier on in your high school career, check out our tips for increasing your GPA . If you’re a junior or senior, it will be harder to increase your GPA, so the easiest way to increase your Academic Index is to get a higher test score.

2. Aim for a 1450 SAT and 33 ACT

Try to aim for the upper end of the middle 50% standardized test range — 1450 SAT and 33 ACT (University Park). It’s fine if you fall within the accepted average range, though, especially in light of COVID-19 test-optional policies . If you do have the ability to take the tests safely, we recommend doing so and submitting your scores if they fall at or above the 25th percentile.

Get recommendations on applying test-optional using our free Chancing Engine .

3. Apply Early Action

Early Action at Penn State is a non-binding plan that will allow you to find out whether you’ve been admitted before Regular Decision applicants. “If you tend to stress out more than most and have been dreading the college admissions process, applying early action may be the best way to make your senior year of high school as enjoyable as possible,” Penn State says.

While EA plans usually don’t offer the same advantage as Early Decision plans, they often do give you a slight bump.

4. Understand that different campuses and schools are more competitive than others

University Park is the most selective campus, and some special programs are more competitive than others. Review the requirements for individual programs and campuses, and consider alternatives, which may provide an alternate path for admission.

5. Consider Summer Session

If you are set on University Park, you can increase your chances of admission by indicating that you’re willing to start during summer session. Penn State will review your application and consider you for your first-choice semester initially, and if they are unable to offer you admission and you’ve indicated interest in summer session, they will consider you for this alternate start time.

How to Apply to Penn State

State College, Pennsylvania is a vibrant and lively town nestled in the hills of central Pennsylvania. Known as the home to Penn State University, this college town offers activities and attractions for visitors year-round. Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a nature lover, or a history buff, there are plenty of things to do in State College, PA .

For sports fans, a visit to Beaver Stadium is a must. Home to Penn State Nittany Lions football, this iconic stadium holds over 100,000 spectators and offers an unforgettable game day experience.

We spend weekends in Happy Valley often in the fall for football games and usually find ourselves in town during other seasons a few times per year, too.

If you’re not a sports fan, State College is surrounded by beautiful hiking trails and parks, such as Rothrock State Forest and Mount Nittany, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures and breathtaking views.

For those who are interested in history and culture, the Palmer Museum of Art is a must-visit attraction. This museum is home to an impressive collection of American and European art in central Pennsylvania.

Best Things to do in State College, PA

State College also boasts a vibrant downtown area, filled with charming shops, restaurants, and cafes, where you can indulge in delicious dishes and explore unique shops. Happy Valley makes a great weekend getaway from Pittsburgh or Philly!

These are our favorite things to do in State College, PA . Take advantage of some of these great spots during your next visit.

1. Tour Penn’s Cave by Boat

If you’re looking for a truly unique tour experience in central Pennsylvania, you must visit Penn’s Cave in nearby Centre Hall.

What sets Penn’s Cave apart is that it offers the only boat tour through an all-water-filled cavern in the entire United States. As you step aboard the flat-bottom boat, you’ll be transported into an underground world, surrounded by giant rock formations

Red flat bottomed boats sit at the entrance of Penn's Cave, waiting to be filled for tours, one of the best things to do in State College when the weather is less than ideal.

As part of the tour, you’ll venture through the entire cave and end up outside the cave on the other side, on Lake Nittanee when the water levels permit. We were happy for a break in the rain, so that we could enjoy a short float around the lake before heading back into Penn’s Cave.

After exploring the beauty of Lake Nittanee, the boat tour takes you back inside the cave. Your tour guide will show you points of interest along the way. We won’t give away all of the surprises and ruin all of the fun!

If you’re planning to take this boat tour, have a jacket or sweatshirt, no matter what time of year. The caves are always 52 degrees! This is a great activity no matter what the weather is like outside, even on rainy days.

An important note : This tour is not accessible. To board the boat, you’ll have to descend nearly 50 steep concrete stairs. While there are railings on each side, there is no other way to board the boat. You will also have to climb back up these same stairs after the tour is finished.

2. Explore the Beautiful Arboretum

Within the picturesque campus of Penn State University, the Arboretum at Penn State is a hidden gem that showcases botanical beauty.

Spread across several acres, this garden is a delightful escape into a world filled with vibrant colors, aromatic scents, and diverse plant life.

Depending on the time of year, you can find various trees, shrubs, and flowering plants in full bloom.

One of the best things to do in State College, PA is enjoy a walk through the Arboretum, which has paved and concrete pathways weaving through various trees and plants.

Wander through the rose gardens or along the ponds and pollinator plots filled with flowering plants and fruit trees. The rose gardens are one of my favorite spots when they’re blooming!

The Overlook Pavilion is another must-see spot in the Arboretum. From this vantage point, you can admire views of the surrounding campus. This spot is so beautiful that it often hosts weddings.

The Arboretum is open daily from dawn to dusk, and you are free to wander through the grounds for as much or as little time as you’d like. There is no fee to visit.

It’s particularly beautiful when the flowering plants are in full bloom, and it’s a great free activity to enjoy while visiting State College.

3. Sample Delicious Craft Beer

We’re always on the lookout for a new spot to sample a few craft beers when we’re out and about, and you’ll find some fun spots in and around State College. Each offers its own unique brews and flavors.

Antifragile Brewing Company is a newer one in town, established in 2022. It’s made a big impression so far, though! We loved their Fluffy Little Puppy IPAs. The kombucha also gets great reviews!

Happy Valley Brewing Company is also a gem in the craft beer scene of State College. With a focus on using local ingredients, they produce a range of high-quality beers that perfectly capture the flavors of the region. Housed in an old barn on the edge of town, the spot is cozy and easily accessible from Route 322. HVBC is also a delicious brunch spot.

The popular Voodoo Brewing location in State College is also just up the street from Happy Valley Brewing Company.

A glass of beer sits to the left of the frame and a white can with navy blue lettering reads blue stripe, Kolsh Style.

For a little change of pace, you can head north about 10 miles to historic Bellefonte. You’ll find Axemann Brewing housed in a giant old industrial building. You can always find a solid brew and a game on one of many TVs. We especially like their fall beers!

Just across town in Bellefonte, you’ll find Robin Hood Brewing Company. While the outside of the building doesn’t look like your typical eclectic craft brewery, their beers are always good. The best orange creamsicle beer I’ve had to date was at Robinhood, and I’ve been on the hunt for some time.  They serve a variety and have plenty of food options, so come both hungry and thirsty.

4. Hike Mount Nittany

Mount Nittany is a popular hiking destination near State College, Pennsylvania, drawing both locals and visitors. The hike is rewarding with great views of the town, university campus, and surrounding area.

The trailhead is easily accessible on the edge of town.

The hike up Mount Nittany is known for its varying levels of difficulty, with several trail options to choose from.  Along the way, you’ll encounter a diverse range of terrain, including wooded paths, rocky outcrops, and a couple steep but short ascents.

Mike Lynch Overlook on Mount Nittany

If you begin hiking the loop to the left heading clockwise, you’ll begin with the rockier climb. You’ll also save those iconic views of the town and Beaver Stadium for the last overlook.

However, if you’re short on time and just want that one iconic view, take the trail to the right heading counterclockwise. You’ll navigate a stretch of switchback-type dirt trail to reach the best views. Once you reach the top, the hike around is fairly flat.

The hike is especially stunning during the fall when the foliage paints the landscape with vibrant colors.

It’s important to come prepared with appropriate footwear, water, and snacks, as you can spend several hours exploring the overlooks and connector trails.

5. Enjoy a Sweet Treat at Berkey Creamery

If you find yourself in State College, Pennsylvania, be sure to indulge in the delicious treats and dairy products at the renowned Berkey Creamery. Anyone who is familiar with PSU is also familiar with this tasty spot.

Known for its rich and creamy goodness, the ice cream from the Creamery comes in a variety of flavors that vary by the day, satisfying any sweet tooth.

The fun flavors, including Grilled Stickies, Scholar’s Chip, Lion Tracks, Mint Nittany, and Whiteout, among others, are sure to keep you on your toes and rotate often. I love the Grilled Stickies, but the Whiteout is unique and intriguing. Grab a cone to enjoy on the patio or a pint to take home with you.

The Creamery also has a great on-site cheese selection. Using a science-based process, the Creamery crafts delectable cheeses that are both flavorful and unique. Whether you prefer a sharp cheddar or a creamy spread, these cheeses are all made on campus.

6. Explore Central PA Waterfalls

If you crave the beauty of the great outdoors, then the nooks and crannies surrounding State College have something special in store for you – we’re talking about some great waterfalls!

All within an hour of State College, you can explore and enjoy these 3 lesser-known waterfalls:

  • Rosecrans Falls
  • Yost Run Falls
  • Kyler Fork Falls

Rosecrans Falls is just a short distance from Interstate 80 at the Loganton exit (exit 185). Structures being built have recently changed the area and it’s certainly not as remote as it used to be. However, the waterfall is still beautiful for now, and you’ll get a 2-for-1 view.

Yost Run Falls and Kyler Fork Falls are hidden gems along the Chuck Keiper Trail in the Sproul State Forest. They’re not far from each other along the trail, but they’re much more remote feeling than Rosecrans Falls these days.

A little further south, you’ll find Trough Creek State Park , home to Rainbow Falls. In addition to the waterfall, there is a swinging bridge, balanced rock, and a beautiful creek to explore. It’s one of our favorite lesser-known state parks in Pennsylvania .

7. Visit Black Moshannon and Explore PA’s Largest Bog

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from State College lies Pennsylvania’s largest bog in Black Moshannon State Park .

Take a stroll on the hiking trails that lead you around the bog, through the central PA woods, and along the lake’s shores. The surrounding landscape is unique, with its characteristically dark-colored water, a result of those tannins lurking in the plants.

When you visit the largest bog in the Keystone State, you’ll probably encounter a variety of Pennsylvania’s unique plants and critters. Keep your eyes peeled for nesting bald eagles, busy beavers, and waterfowl that make the bog and its surroundings their home.

8. Embrace Sports at the Penn State All-Sports Museum

Take a spin through the Penn State All-Sports Museum, located in the southwest corner of Beaver Stadium, while you visit State College. This place houses plenty of history and feats of Penn State athletes and Intercollegiate Athletics.

Even though it is in Beaver Stadium, the exhibits showcase archival images, exhibits, and memorabilia from each of the 34 varsity sports, including 3 that have been discontinued. Everything from football, wrestling, and basketball to volleyball, softball, and fencing is covered here.

As you dive into the exhibits, you’ll find yourself immersed in the victories, the rivalries, and the legendary moments that have etched themselves into the university sports history.

From championship trophies to game-worn jerseys, from vintage photographs to personal artifacts, the museum unravels the tales and triumphs of past and present Penn State athletes.

9. Appreciate the Palmer Museum of Art

When you’re in State College, you absolutely can’t miss the Palmer Museum if you’re an art lover.

Inside, you’ll find an extensive collection of American and European art – paintings, sculptures, photographs, you name it. There are over 10,000 pieces in the Palmer Museum collection.

You’ll have to wait until spring 2024 to visit, though. The museum is getting a whole new look and expanding.

It will now be housed within the Arboretum. Visit two spots in one whenever you explore next and include both outdoors wandering through all of the plants and trees in the Arboretum followed by the Palmer Museum.

10. See Historic Old Main and Wander Around Campus

If you’ve made your way to town for a campus tour or to visit your student, you’ll likely find yourself near Old Main.

Step into the heart of Penn State University in State College, and you’ll find Historic Old Main – an iconic structure that’s one of the most recognizable spots on all of campus. It originally housed the Farmers High School and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The iconic Old Main building of Penn State University, with its stately architecture and towering bell tower, stands against a clear blue sky, framed by a curving sidewalk and traditional lamp posts on a bright sunny day.

Built back in the 1860s, Old Main holds its own special place in Penn State’s story. It has been home to all of the university’s administrative functions, shaping the university’s growth and development.

While newer buildings have taken over some of those roles, Old Main still stands tall, reminding us of where it all began.

Wander around Old Main, and you won’t be able to forget its stunning exterior and architectural features like the clock tower and those elegant columns. Inside, you’ll find plenty more history including frescoes commemorating the Land Grant Act.

WASHINGTON – The National Park Service (NPS) today announced $25.7 million in Save America’s Treasures grants to fund 59 projects that will preserve nationally significant sites and historic collections in 26 states and the District of Columbia.  “The Save America’s Treasures program began 25 years ago and continues to enable communities across the United States to preserve and conserve their nationally significant historic properties and collections,” said National Park Service Director Chuck Sams . “It’s fitting to celebrate this milestone anniversary through a wide range of projects that help to pass the full history of America and its people down to future generations.”  Since 1999, the Save America’s Treasures program has provided over $405 million from the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) to more than 1,400 projects to provide preservation and conservation work on nationally significant collections, artifacts, structures, and sites. Previous awards have gone toward restoring the Park Inn Hotel , designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; the USS Intrepid , an Essex class carrier on display in Manhattan; and the Saturn V Launch Vehicle , a three-stage rocket designed for a lunar landing mission.  Today’s award of $25,705,000 will be matched by almost $50 million in private and public investment. NPS partners with the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services to award the grants.  Established in 1977, the HPF has provided more than $2 billion in historic preservation grants to states, Tribes, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Administered by NPS, HPF grant funds are appropriated by Congress annually to support a variety of historic preservation projects to help preserve the nation’s cultural and historic resources. The HPF, which uses revenue from federal offshore oil and gas leases, supports a broad range of preservation projects without expending tax dollars. The intent behind the HPF is to mitigate the loss of nonrenewable resources through the preservation of other irreplaceable resources. Applications for next year’s round of the Save America's Treasures Grant Program will open in the fall of 2024. $25.5 million in funding will be available. Examples of today’s awarded grants include:

  • Historic Hudson Valley will use grant funding to address water penetration and deteriorating masonry at the historic Ivy Cottage located at Sunnyside, the New York home of early American author Washington Irving. Irving lived at Sunnyside from 1835 until his death in 1859. As an author, Irving helped to build a truly American literary landscape; as a property, Sunnyside became one of the physical landmarks of the American Romantic movement. The grantee will provide $640,365 of matching funds.
  • The Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation will digitize 2,000 videotapes from their archival collections which document the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building, the largest domestic terrorist attack on U.S. soil. This digitization will update the outdated formats the collection currently consists of and will provide video stabilization work. The grantee will provide $89,428 in matching funds.
  • Michigan Technological University will digitize and organize historic copper mining records. While mining on the Keweenaw Peninsula began at least 8,000 years ago, improved excavating technology and increased demand for copper wire in the 1800s drove thousands to northern Michigan to work in the mines. Improved access to mining records will make historic data from the late 1800s and early 1900s accessible to the public. The grantee will provide $118,898 in matching funds.
