WHAT OUR VISITORS ARE SAYING ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE!

train favicon

From the people helping me to get the tickets to helping us on the train, everyone was great. My 3 year old grandson loved the music and danced on the train. Very fun!

We had an absolutely great time on the fall robbery ride. Everyone was having a good time and especially good for the kids! Will do it again and will probably go be one of the robbers!

First train ride for most on my party. We had Muncies for a picnic on the train. It was difficult to hear about the history but we were able to make out important details. The village was quite a bit of history. Everyone was friendly and informative. The kids had a great time and that was most important. Friendly staff!!!!

This ride happens only three times per year, it's a nice scenic ride, but...the train is stopped by robbers on horseback! They board the train and take your (fake green monopoly) money. At first, I thought it would scare kids...but on the contrary. It was awesome, and they loved it. They were pleasant robbers that let kids pet their horses. :-)

GET INVOLVED

If you have an interest in historic preservation and interpretation, we have a place for you! Our friendly volunteers have helped make memories for thousands of families over the last 50-plus years — you can be one of us! Hocking Valley Scenic Railway - Nelsonville, Ohio

ULTIMATE Guide to Hocking Valley Scenic Railway Ohio Train Rides

From the beautiful surroundings and rolling hills of Ohio to the smells and sounds of a locomotive, an experience on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is nothing short of incredible.

It feels like a step back in time to the way people used to travel. At the same time, it’s immersive into the natural world around the region, creating a meaningful experience for most who ride.

About the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a train that runs through the heart of Nelsonville Ohio. The original rail line was founded in 1864 and called the Mineral Rail Road. It connected Columbus to Athens Ohio. A few years later, the name was changed to the Columbus & Hocking Valley Railroad.

27 Best Spring Things to Do in Ohio

From the start, the rail line was designed to move salt and coal, but over the coming years, it became critical for moving brick, which helped build the region’s cities. Passenger service was established in 1869 and provided a fast way to get to Lancaster.

Over the years, the railroad’s name and purpose changed, often expanding to include new areas and towns. Passenger service on the train ended in 1949 with many of the rail depots closing down and ultimately being torn down in the coming years.

Today, the train is managed entirely by volunteers, and it no longer moves coal. Rather, it has become a tourist destination in Ohio for Hocking Hills train rides. Many people come to the area to explore the feel of the railroad, and numerous types of train rides are available.

The Hocking Valley Train & Route

The train currently used on the Hocking Valley rail line is made up of equipment that ranges from 1917 through 1960. It features some surprising amenities, including enclosed coaches and three open-air cars. These open-air cars were once historic freight cars, but today, they make for a fun way to enjoy the ride.

The train travels along a 145-year-old route that used to link Columbus and Lake Erie to the Southern portions of Ohio. The route allows visitors to see a number of fun sites along the way, including the Nelsonville Brick Company, Hocking Canal, and miles and miles of beautiful, dense forest.

Nelsonville Ohio Historic Train Rides

One of the best things about the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is that it operates most times of the year, providing fun excursions with various themes. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most impressive Nelsonville train rides available each year.

Dinner Train Rides

An old-fashioned Hocking Valley Railway dinner train ride is one of the best ways to experience the railroad. This is a three-hour trip that takes you through the Southeast Ohio backcountry all the way to East Logan and then returns.

A four-course dinner takes place on the trip with a range of foods available. This dinner train experience is for those who are over the age of 21. As an elegant dinner train experience, it’s not only enjoyable and tastes great but also makes for the perfect romantic dinner.

Starbrick BBQ and Brew’s Express

For those looking for a two-hour scenic train ride with lots of food and beer, the Starbrick BBQ and Brew’s Express is a must-do experience. The ticket includes a meal that consists of a chicken wing dinner, strawberry shortcake, and a can of beer (up to four per passenger available).

This trip, also for those who are over the age of 21, is designed to provide a fun evening out. This dining experience must be booked in advance and is a popular option.

The Murder Mystery Dinner Train

Are you looking for a more exciting experience? Perhaps, one that’s more interactive? The Murder Mystery Dinner Train is a fantastic opportunity.

This experience allows guests to particulate in uncovering the mysterious murder of a passenger. And, the meal is one of gourmet prime rib with fixings. It is a fun train ride that includes plenty of time spent relaxing with a drink and a show.

Holiday Train Rides

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway has long been a valuable tool for transportation during the colder months, but today, it is more focused on providing holiday experiences for guests.

There are a number of events throughout the winter months and the rest of the year that are celebrated with lots of fun on the railroad. Here are some of them.

Easter Bunny Train & Egg Hunt

The Easter Bunny Train & Egg Hunt is a fun way to get the kids involved. Two trains depart for the trip, each traveling past Haydenville and then returning to Nelsonville.

On the return trip, the train stops at a secret hiding spot where the Easter Bunny lives, allowing kids to spend some time finding Easter eggs. Prizes and age-appropriate activities are provided too. The Easter train trip takes about two hours to complete.

Dinner Train Car

Memorial Day Train

Celebrating Memorial Day is a very important tradition in the region. The Memorial Day Train ride is the East Logan weekend train experience, which leaves from Nelsonville and travels on the Hocking River Valley path.

There are a number of historic sites on the way, including the city of Haydenville, where the brick company used to be. Other experiences include the Hocking Canal locks and the gravel mine.

Fall Foliage Train Ride

There’s nothing quite like the vibrance of the fall leaves in Ohio , and the Fall Foliage Train Tour is one of the best ways to experience it all. The trains depart on select days during October.

The ride is about two hours, taking riders to East Logan and back again. Open-air cars are available as long as the weather is good.

Nelsonville Labor Day Train

Another relaxing train experience is the Nelsonville Labor Day Train, a trip that happens each Labor Day. The train leaves the Nelsonville Depot and travels along the Hocking River Valley, passing through Haydenville and other sites along the way.

It’s a great way to spend this special day and provides a fantastic view along the way.

Nelsonville Halloween Train

A trunk-or-treat type of experience, the Nelsonville Halloween Train leaves from Nelsonville in the evening and traverses the spooky Hocking River Valley. Kids and parents can dress up appropriately, and there’s lots of candy to be had.

Santa Train

Perhaps one of the most sought-after tickets of the year is for the Santa Train. This two-hour train ride is a 40-year tradition in the region, taking families along the East Logan route and back.

Santa gets on board and visits with each child during the experience, and the often snow-covered hills make for a mesmerizing sight.

New Year’s Eve Train & Fireworks

During the New Year’s Eve Train & Fireworks experience, the train stops near midnight to view a fantastic fireworks display. With two themes, the event is a fun way to ring in the New Year.

More Hocking Valley Train Rides

There are a few more interesting train rides to consider on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. You don’t need a holiday for a reason to jump on board.

Hocking Valley Steam Train Special

Riding a steam train through Hocking Valley is a unique experience, taking you way back in history. The train is a 1920s coal-fired steam train that travels around to East Logan and back.

There are limited times when this ride is available because of the historic nature of the train, but the Hocking Valley Steam Train Special is one of the best times of year for a true adventure.

All Caboose Train Ride

If you enjoy trains, you will want to book the All Caboose Train Ride, an opportunity to check out all of the cabooses in the area. The rail uses privately owned cabooses to operate this unique, annual train ride.

The train makes its way to East Logan but stops along the way for some photos. There is very little seating for this ride, so booking in advance is a must.

Ohio’s Friendliest Train Robbery

There’s no doubt that Ohio’s Friendliest Train Robbery is a must for those who want to experience an adventure. This is a family-friendly experience but one in which a group of bandits on horseback really will come on board. Although there’s play money involved, it’s a thrilling experience.

Nelsonville East Logan Train Ride

The Nelsonville East Logan Train Ride offers a fantastic view of the nature of this region. This is the routine, Saturday-and-Sunday train ride offered by the organization. It’s a fun two hours on board a historic train.

Noon Train to Haydenville

The Noon Train to Haydenville happens during the warmer months on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s a ride along the Hocking River Valley. The ride is a short trip about 1.5 hours in length but perfect for those who are going on their first ride.

Packing List For Train Rides In Ohio

If you are searching, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly when packing when heading to ride a train.

A  concealed travel pouch  may be one of the most important items you bring along when taking a scenic railway excursion.

It is  always   important  to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

This  unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind.

You can place it under your clothes next to your body to carry your ID safely.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID  sleeves  are the perfect solution.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery .

This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and is so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking Insta-worthy selfies while on an Ohio train!

I never much believed in using packing cubes when traveling. That is until I tried them. Now I am hooked. These are the exact cubes I use to stay organized when I pack for a trip!

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for your adventures and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

The replaceable carbon filter ensures you always have fresh drinking water with you!

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this  collapsible silicone foldable water bottle  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc… while riding trains in Ohio.

This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great. And it comes in many different colors!

With so many Ohio train rides to choose from, there is truly something for everyone. There are dinner train rides and wine tastings as well as fun, themed rides both children and adults alike will enjoy!

Once you’re all packed for your adventure, you can grab all of the supplies you need at Crooked River Adventures. Rent a kayak, a canoe, or a standup paddleboard. Life vests and paddles are also available.

alt

The five-mile journey along the Upper Cuyahoga River usually takes between two and four hours. Canoes hold a maximum of three adults or, if you’re bringing the kiddos along, two adults and two children.

alt

Meander down the river once you’ve signed a waiver, paid a deposit, and provided identification to the adventure company.

alt

Start planning your trip down the Upper Cuyahoga River by visiting the official website of Crooked River Adventures , or stop by Facebook to read all the rave Crooked River Adventures reviews .

alt

Even with snacks on the river, you’ve probably worked up a hearty appetite, which makes Barrio Kent, a popular taco joint with several locations in Ohio, the perfect destination.

alt

While it boasts the motto of “have a taco or two,” once you get a bite of Barrio’s famous tacos, you’ll probably want quite a few more. The popular taco stand offers a selection of tacos, or you can custom-build your own.

alt

Building your own taco is a six-step process that will leave your mouth watering and your stomach gnawing in anticipation. Start by deciding which proteins you want; pulled pork, the fish of the day, and thick-cut bacon are a few of your many choices.

alt

What’ll you have your taco in? A hard corn shell? A soft flour wrap? Or a bowl with rice? Then, pick your cheese, toppings, sauce, and salsa. Go as bold or as mild as you want. It’s all up to you.

alt

Take a peek at the specials, too, which might feature such classics as the chicken shawarma taco and garlic chickpea guacamole. For the perfect meal, add a margarita. You’ve got a choice of nearly a dozen.

alt

Browse the full menu on the official website of Barrio Kent , or check out the Facebook page of Barrio Kent .

alt

Ohio Tourist Railroads and Museums

Northeast ohio.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad – 1630 Mill Street W, Peninsula This tourist railroad operates 25 miles of track through its namesake National Park, which is the only one of its kind in Ohio. While year-round special event trains are offered, it’s the regular scenic excursions that provide multiple stops between Independence and Akron, making the visit to Cuyahoga Valley National Park unique, efficient, and fun. Of course, the special event excursions include something for everyone with the dinner trains, Fall Flyer , the North Pole Limited , and Steam in the Valley.

Dennison Railroad Depot Museum – 400 Center Street, Dennison This former Pennsylvania Railroad depot was built in 1873 and has been restored to gleaming perfection. The depot serves as a museum full of exhibits and a library. Just outside is a collection of displayed equipment: Chesapeake & Ohio 2-8-4, Kanawha-type steam locomotive No. 2700; a train of passenger cars, including a Pullman sleeper which is used for a unique Bed & Breakfast experience; and a caboose. The depot plays host to numerous special events, including Fall and Polar Express excursions on the Ohio Central Railroad.

Northwest Ohio

Mad River and NKP Railroad Museum – 253 Southwest Street, Bellevue When it comes to preserving the legacy of the Nickel Plate Road, the Mad River and NKP Railroad Museum fit the bill. Out of the collection relating to the railroad and its successors, 2-8-4 Berkshire-type No. 757 is the museum’s crown jewel; it’s currently under cosmetic restoration. There are many other unique pieces of equipment on display, including CB&Q Silver Dome No. 4714, the first dome car built in the United States. For some modern railroading action, take a short walk to the Kemper Railroad Park pavilion to watch the Norfolk Southern and Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway cross over each other.

Southeast Ohio

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway – 33 West Canal Street, Nelsonville Steam- and diesel-powered excursions take passengers over part of the original Hocking Valley Railway’s Athens branch from Nelsonville. The usual excursions operate 14 miles to Haydenville while the 22-mile trips travel as far as East Logan. Scenic highlights include Wayne National Forest, the Appalachian foothills, and the banks of the Hocking River. For those looking to add some steam into the mix, the 1920 Baldwin-built 0-6-0 No. 3 operates on select days during the season.

Southwest Ohio

Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad – 16 East South Street, Lebanon As part of the Cincinnati Scenic Railway, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad operates passenger excursions over a section of the Indiana & Ohio Railroad through Warren County. A mixture of both air-conditioned and open-window coaches are used on the 75-minute Turtle Creek Valley Flyer . Ohio Passenger Railroads and Scenic Railroads

Besides Ohio's early canals, railroads played and still play an important part of our commerce. America's first regular commercial rail service was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad which started in 1828. The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad became the first regular rail service to operate from Ohio in 1837.

By 1850 there was a rail boom in Ohio and by 1860 there was more railroad track laid in Ohio than any other state with almost 3000 miles of track connecting every major community in Ohio. While many might think that railroads are a thing of the past, today Ohio has more than 5,230 miles of working rail lines crossing the state.

Most of the passenger lines have disappeared from Ohio. Amtrak still offers regular train service across Ohio's north coast with stations at Alliance, Cleveland, Elyria, Sandusky, Toledo, and Bryan Ohio. In the south, there are stops only in Cincinnati, but on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, there are Amtrak stops at Ashland, South Shore, and Maysville KY.

There are still several scenic railroads in regular operation providing visitors an opportunity to experience what rail travel was like.. Many of the scenic railroads that were once popular throughout the state have found the economy to be more of a problem than keeping their rolling stock in good condition.

There are numerous railroad museums throughout the state, with the oldest one being the Ohio Railway Museum in Worthington , Ohio.

Ohio has about 10 operating scenic railroads that provide periodic excursions through the country and that number is likely to grow. Just recently, the new Lodi Station Outlets has included a rail line to their shopping experience so shoppers can ride the rails and shop at the same location.

Here is a list of the major operating scenic railroads in Ohio:

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in Northeastern Ohio runs through the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Each trip is a different adventure filled with fun, excitement, natural beauty and historic sights. Spend a little or a lot of time exploring the things you like to see and do. You'll ride comfortably in vintage climate-controlled coaches built between 1939 and 1940. The coaches originally saw passenger service on the Seaboard and Santa Fe Railroads. Sit back, relax and enjoy a train ride to many exciting round trip destinations. It's all waiting for you. The train. The trips. The sights. The professional staff. Get on Board. Please consult their web site for schedules, where to buy tickets and seasonal specials.

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Take a leisurely ride through the beautiful hills of southeastern Ohio. Enjoy the blooming dogwood trees in the spring, summertime fun, nature's spectacular fall foliage or a special winter ride with Santa. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers diesel-powered rides through the beautiful, rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio aboard vintage equipment. The coaches used were built in 1927 for commuter service around Chicago and the primary diesel locomotive we use was built back in October of 1952. The coaches are heated in the winter. Regular service rides are held on weekends throughout the summer months from Memorial Day thru Labor Day and special rides at Christmas, Easter and a number of other special rides including a train robbery and a murder mystery ride.

While visiting the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, also visit the Nelsonville's Historic Square Arts District.

Byesville Scenic Railway

The Byesville Scenic Railway has stopped offering train excursions. Plans for future excursion offerings are undecided at this time, but according to their web site they are hopeful that circumstances will change. They do have a memorial statue dedicated to the Coal Miner's contribution to Ohio's industry and a special museum featuring coal miner's equipment and artifacts.

http://byesvillescenicrailway.org/

Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway and Museum

The scenic rail trips are no longer in operation at this time. They are hoping to have the trips resume as quickly as possible. They are offering motor car rides.

Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad

Experience a nostalgic train ride on the Lebanon Mason Monroe (LM&M) Railroad through Warren County in Southwestern, Ohio. Every weekend the LM&M invites you to reminisce and capture moments with family. Walk through the train to the open-air gondola and listen to informative conductors describe railroad history and operation as well as offer a brief locomotive tour.

Formerly known as the Lebanon and Turtlecreek Railway, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad (LM&M) operates out of the beautiful Lebanon Station, in historic downtown Lebanon, Ohio. The train consists of a restored 1950s-era GP-7 diesel-electric locomotive, four open-window commuter coaches built in 1930, and a popular open-air gondola car on the rear of the train that allows passengers to enjoy panoramic views.

Throughout the season, they often have other locomotives head up the tour trains like the above Flagg Coal Company #75 that took part in their "All Steamed Up!" excursions in June 2008. This is a small, industrial-type engine, with an 0-4-0 wheel configuration. Built in 1930 by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., it was first purchased by the Flagg Coal Company in Pennsylvania, but then sold to the Solvay Process Quarry in New York, where it was used to push cart loads of rock. In 1954, it was purchased by railroad conservationist Dr. Stanley Groman. After Groman’s death in 1991, father and son team Byron and John Gramling purchased and restored the locomotive.

All Aboard the Autumn Express: Experience Scenic Fall Train Rides in Ohio

By trish mann.

Hues of green,, red and gold leaves encircle train as it proceeds on the tracks

Exploring rail travel of the past

Hues of green,, red and gold leaves encircle train as it proceeds on the tracks

Ohio’s landscape comes alive in a spectacular array of red, oranges, and gold during the fall months. And there is no finer way to enjoy the mosaic of colors canvassing the rolling hills and charming towns than aboard a scenic train ride.

Rail travel has a rich history, and it continues to charm with nostalgia and the ambiance of yesteryear, delighting passengers of all ages. Throughout the year, the trains offer an opportunity to see life beyond the highways and busy streets. However, fall foliage makes an already exciting experience that much more memorable.

Wherever you are in the state, you are not far from a scenic railroad excursion.

ohio train tour

The journey is about to begin. The promise of adventure is in the air.

You step onto the platform. The train is ominous in size yet exciting as it gleams in the sunlight. The doors open, inviting you to climb aboard.

Once you find your seat and settle in, take a moment to look around and absorb the ambiance of a bygone era. From the fabrics to the decor, you slip back to when rail travel was a common method of transportation. It was refined with an air of prestige.

With each clickety-clack of the wheels, the train moves out of the station slowly and steadily, and the locomotive gains speed. Your eyes divert to the window as the fall’s mosaic colors the countryside.

The rhythmic motion of the cars becomes a soothing backdrop to the journey unfolding before your eyes, and sunlight quickly filters through the trees. River beds glisten in the sunlight, and shade dapples the forest floors. Bridges, tunnels, and hillsides all come to life in a world left untouched by modern society.

Located at the crossroads of three major rail lines, the park provides a unique vantage point to witness the sheer power and scale of freight trains.

The park’s design caters to both avid railfans and families looking for a unique outing.

It’s a place where the fascination of trains meets the simplicity of a park.

The park itself is modest, a 5.6-acre expanse designed with train enthusiasts in mind.

Its location is strategic, sitting directly inside the triangle formed by three double-track mainline freight rail lines.

From this vantage point, visitors can witness a continuous parade of trains operated by major rail companies such as CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern.

The experience of standing so close to these massive, thundering machines is both awe-inspiring and humbling.

It reminds us of the vital role that railroads continue to play in the transportation of goods across the country.

fostoria rail park 3

Fostoria’s railroad heritage dates back to the 19th century when the town grew as a key hub in the nation’s burgeoning rail network.

Even today, trains remain an indelible part of the Fostoria landscape.

With around 100 trains passing through the town daily, Fostoria is a busy spot.

The park was developed to provide a safe and convenient spot for train enthusiasts to gather and observe this non-stop rail traffic.

Its design includes viewing platforms that offer unobstructed views of the tracks, along with amenities like restrooms and even vending machines.

fostoria rail park 4

What makes Fostoria Rail Park truly special is the sheer volume of trains that pass through on a daily basis.

It’s not uncommon for visitors to see multiple trains within just a few minutes of each other, with freight cars stretching for miles, carrying everything from raw materials to consumer goods.

The variety of trains that make their way through the park is also impressive.

The sight of these powerful locomotives pulling enormous loads at high speeds is a captivating spectacle that keeps train watchers returning time and time again.

One of the best features of Fostoria Rail Park is its accessibility.

There’s no need for special tickets or advanced reservations.

Just show up, find a comfy spot, and enjoy the show.

The park is equipped with sheltered viewing areas, perfect for keeping you dry during those unexpected rain showers.

Benches and picnic tables are scattered throughout, inviting you to sit down, relax, and maybe even have a picnic while trains roar by.

Whether you’re a professional photographer or someone who just loves snapping pics with your smartphone, the park’s dynamic backdrop will not disappoint.

One might think that a place with so many trains would be noisy and chaotic, but Fostoria Rail Park manages to maintain a peaceful ambiance.

The park is designed to allow visitors to enjoy the trains without feeling overwhelmed by the noise.

It’s a delicate balance, and the park achieves it beautifully.

The gentle hum of engines and the distant whistle of an approaching train add to the charm rather than detract from it.

Amtrak in Ohio: Backers hope where there's a will, there's a railway

Portrait of Patricia Gallagher Newberry

Mitch Radakovich's car is older than he is.

But that doesn't faze the 24-year-old Cincinnati native, who travels by foot and bus between his home in Over-the-Rhine, his office downtown and wherever else he wants to go in Greater Cincinnati.

"I really only live a 'car-lite' life," Radakovich said. "To go completely car-free is really exciting to me."

Fueling his excitement, at present, are plans to expand Amtrak passenger service across Ohio.

Those efforts took big steps forward late last year, with four Ohio-centered expansion proposals winning federal dollars.

And while new Amtrak service is still years away, the four projects are now guaranteed additional federal funding for planning and, absent missteps, construction.

Radakovich will join fellow volunteers of a rail advocacy group called All Aboard Ohio as they promote passenger train possibilities during the Cincinnati stop of their Whistle Stop Tour.

Where are Whistle Stops on the tour?

All Aboard Ohio, one of more than nearly 200 individuals and groups publicly supporting the four Ohio proposals, will review the options and next steps during an event downtown at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Its presentation is open to the public, with limited space still available.

The group opened its Whistle Stop Tour in Dayton last week, with upcoming presentations planned for Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo and Crestline, Ohio.

"This is something I want for Ohio," said Erin Rosiello, the group's chair. "This is something everyone should want for Ohio."

Where would new passenger trains travel?

Passenger train travel got a big boost late last year from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

That happened Dec. 8 when the department's Federal Railroad Administration announced 69 grants of $500,000 each to governments and other groups looking to establish or expand routes.

The four Ohio proposals were among them:

  • The Cincinnati-Columbus-Cleveland-Dayton corridor – known as 3C+D – would connect Ohio’s four largest metropolitan areas, home to about 57% of the state’s 11.8 million residents. With three to five daily round trips, between 400,000 and 800,000 people would use this line a year, according to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission.
  • The Midwest Connect line would connect Pittsburgh to Chicago, through Columbus and Fort Wayne, Indiana. With six daily round trips, 200,000 to 400,000 riders would use this route a year, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning group said.
  • New passenger train travel from Cleveland to Detroit, passing through Toledo, would have an annual economic impact of $100 million, according to Amtrak's Connect US Corridor Vision report of 2020.
  • The Cardinal, Amtrak’s existing train from New York to Chicago with a stop at Cincinnati’s Union Terminal, would expand from three to seven days a week.

After they spend the first grant, backers of the projects will get more federal money to look at key logistics: which trains and tracks to use, how fast and often trains will run, and what passengers will pay for tickets.

"Those are the important questions," said Mark Policinski, CEO of the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments. "If those aren't answered satisfactorily, there is no next phase."

Where does Amtrak operate in Ohio now?

Amtrak passenger trains currently stop in six Ohio cities.

The Capitol Limited , a daily 764-mile line from Washington, D.C.., to Chicago, hits five of them in the northern part of the state – Alliance, Cleveland, Elyria, Sandusky and Toledo. The Capitol, launched in 1981, makes 16 stops on each 18-hour one-way trip. The Ohio stops come in the middle of the night – Cleveland at close to 3 a.m. while heading west and close to 2 a.m. returning east.

The Cardinal, a 1,146-mile train from New York to Chicago, hits only Cincinnati in Ohio, arriving around 1:30 a.m. while westbound and about 3:30 a.m. while eastbound. The line, launched in 1977, travels three times a week, making 32 stops on each leg of 26 1/2-plus hours.

Capitol ridership was about 126,000 for the year ended Sept. 30, down from pre-COVID traffic of close to 210,000 a year. About 83,000 people rode the Cardinal in the last fiscal year, down from 2019 ridership of 109,000.

Central Ohio, meanwhile, has been without passenger trains for decades, with Columbus’ last service ending in 1979. That makes it the largest city east of the Mississippi River without passenger rail, said William Murdoch, executive director of Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission.

Amtrak supports expansion in the state, with plans to tie into some 5,000 miles of existing Ohio tracks. "They are thinking like a business," Murdoch said.

What are the obstacles to Amtrak expansion?

To move forward, however, Amtrak will need to work with Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation, the freight lines that operate in Ohio, to win track-sharing agreements that keep passenger service on schedule. "On-time performance is imperative," said Joseph Schwieterman, a transportation expert and professor at Chicago's DePaul University.

Amtrak will also need stations along the way. It could use Union Terminal in Cincinnati and Cleveland's Lakefront Station site for the 3C+D line – both are included in its 2020 plan – but would need space in Dayton, Columbus and other cities along the route.

Ohio needs more passenger rail to expand its economy and jobs, supporters believe. More train service would allow Ohioans to live in one city and more easily work in another.

Trains will also take cars off roads, reducing congestion and pollution; and make across-state travel easier for people who don't drive for financial, health or other reasons.

The 3C+D project alone would have a statewide economic impact of $47 million a year, according to a November study conducted for All Aboard Ohio. Amtrak, in its 2020 study, put the potential statewide impact of 3C+D service at close to $130 million a year.

When does All Aboard Ohio meet in Cincinnati?

When Radakovich took over as director of the southwest chapter of All Aboard Ohio last summer, three people came to his first meeting. In December, more than 30 showed up.

They'll need patience as they wait for Amtrak to expand. The planning alone will take five or six years.

"Sometimes things take time, but that's no reason not to plan for the future," said Radakovich, a data scientist at Procter & Gamble Co.

As they wait for plans to play out, All Aboard members talk about such issues as how to improve current local Amtrak service and bus travel on Greyhound.

Next week, they'll take up more close-to-home matters with guest Cincinnati City Council member Mark Jeffreys. The meeting is at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Walnut Hills Public Library, 2533 Kemper Lane, and open to all.

ABCs of Ross County: Underground Railroad

Portrait of Shelby Reeves

CHILLICOTHE— From Adena Mansion to Zane's Trace Ross County is filled with a rich history. When looking at the ABCs of Ross County the U stands for the Underground Railroad.

Since Ohio was a free state for slaves during the time of slavery in the United States many freed individuals and runaway slaves sought out the area as a passthrough on the way to freedom.

Local individuals and religious groups played a big part in helping the slaves as a stop on the Underground Railroad. This is why multiple old houses in the area feature hiding spots and passages in the basements which allowed people to safely hide and travel to freedom. It is estimated that thousands were helped in Chillicothe around this time.

Republicans launch tour to recruit and train thousands to watch voting in Ohio, other states

Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley speaks to a room of volunteers at the Ohio Republican Party's headquarters in Columbus on Aug. 23, 2024.

Voter fraud is extremely rare, and Ohio is often mentioned as having the gold standard of election and voting laws, with bipartisan elections workers in every county. But Republicans say they plan to bring in thousands of volunteers to watch for issues on election day and before in Ohio and more than a dozen other states.

This comes as former president Donald Trump has said his focus is not on voter turnout among Republicans but instead to watch Democrats "to make sure they don't cheat, because we have all the votes we'll need." Since 2016 , Trump has been making unfounded claims that elections in the U.S. are riddled with fraud, and in 2020 said , "the only way we're going to lose this election is if the election is rigged." He continues to falsely claim the 2020 election was "stolen" from him.

With what it’s calling the Protect the Vote tour, the Republican National Committee is recruiting and training thousands of volunteers as poll workers and observers for early voting and election day, hoping to have 5,000 in 18 states, including Ohio.

The effort kicked off in Ohio on Friday with a training session at the state Republican Party headquarters in Columbus. Before that session began, a few dozen volunteers heard comments from Attorney General Dave Yost, former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi and RNC chair Michael Whatley.

"What we're going to talk about is things like on election day, when you're working as a volunteer, what are you supposed to see? What's it going to look like? What is a normal day at a polling location?" Whatley told the volunteers. "That way, if you see something out of the ordinary, you can say, 'hey, maybe that's not right.'"

Whatley told reporters later these volunteers in Ohio and the other states will work with county officials to ensure elections system work correctly.

“When they do, people are going to have more confidence and they're going to be more inclined to come out there," Whatley said. "If we have even 1% of voters stay home because they don't think their vote is going to be protected, that's a huge problem.”

Several federal and Ohio laws were enacted to ensure voters aren't intimidated, and there are specific guidelines to challenge whether a voter is qualified to cast a ballot. And Whatley said he’s not concerned about voter intimidation.

“No. I think one of the things that we focus on, in the training sessions is making sure that we respect the process, we respect the poll workers, and we respect, most importantly, the voters," Whatley said.

Whatley, who has previously claimed without evidence there was massive fraud in the 2020 election, also says the RNC will hire thousands of attorneys to observe on election day.

Ohio isn’t considered a battleground state for the presidential vote, but both parties have targeted the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown and Northeast Ohio businessman Bernie Moreno as a must-win contest.

Harris to barnstorm through Georgia in effort to put state back in play

The bus tour reflects the vice president’s effort to to court votes in suburban and rural communities.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will travel across South Georgia on Wednesday, the pair’s second bus tour in two weeks and the first burst of campaigning since the Democratic National Convention ended Thursday.

The tour, which will end with a Harris rally in Savannah on Thursday, is the campaign’s latest effort to compete in Georgia, which has become a particularly critical battleground in the month since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

It also reflects Harris’s effort to go beyond large urban areas to court votes in suburban and rural communities, a strategy that highlights the growing importance of boosting turnout in Democratic strongholds while holding down margins in traditionally Republican counties, said Andra Gillespie, a political science professor at Emory University in Atlanta.

“You cannot neglect the southern part of the state of Georgia and think you can win,” she said. “You have to run up high margins in traditionally Democratic areas like Atlanta, and you also have to hold your own in traditionally Republican areas, recognizing that there are Democrats everywhere in the state.”

Election 2024

ohio train tour

Harris’s campaign has not said specifically where she and Walz will travel during the tour, but aides said their visit would showcase the diversity of the state.

“Campaigning in this part of the Peach State is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians — with a large proportion of Black voters and working class families,” the campaign said in a statement announcing the tour.

Biden narrowly won the state in 2020 , becoming the first Democrat to do so since Bill Clinton in 1992. But many Democrats had privately given up on the idea of carrying Georgia this November, with polls showing former president Donald Trump with a consistent lead over Biden in the state. Those same polls have largely shifted in Democrats’ favor since Harris entered the race, and the party is investing more time and resources in Georgia as it attempts to block Trump’s potential pathways to 270 electoral votes. The Washington Post’s polling average has Trump leading in Georgia by three percentage points.

Both Democrats and Republicans have focused on Georgia in recent weeks, as Trump and Harris each see its 16 electoral votes as crucial for most paths to victory . On Wednesday, the campaign will begin airing new ads in Georgia and other battleground states criticizing Trump over Project 2025 , a think tank document of 900-plus pages largely viewed as an aggressive right-wing blueprint for a second Trump administration.

“While Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are barnstorming the battlegrounds ahead of the debates presenting a vision on how to bring America forward, our campaign is going to take every opportunity to lay out in stark contrast Donald Trump’s dark and extreme vision for this country,” Quentin Fulks, principal deputy campaign manager for Harris’s campaign, said in a statement announcing the ad blitz.

Trump has tried to distance himself from Project 2025, saying it does not represent his campaign, despite its multiple connections to his political allies and former administration officials. Harris has sought to tie him to the unpopular parts of the document, mentioning it at almost every campaign stop. In a memo released Wednesday, Porsha White, the Harris campaign’s Georgia state director, slammed Project 2025 as particularly “out of step” with the state.

Harris traveled to Atlanta last month for a rally that featured rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo, drawing more than 10,000 people.

“I am very clear: The path to the White House runs right through this state,” Harris said at the event. “You all helped us win in 2020, and we’re going to do it again in 2024.”

Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, held a rally a few days later in the same venue, speaking to a near-capacity crowd.

The bus tour is expected to feature more intimate settings and smaller groups, following the template Harris and Walz set while traveling through Western Pennsylvania on Aug. 18.

During that swing, Harris and Walz greeted supporters at an airport hangar, dropped in on a high school football practice, handed out baked goods to firefighters, met with volunteers and made campaign phone calls. The trip took them to Allegheny County, home to Pittsburgh and a large cache of Democratic voters, as well as Beaver County, a more Republican-leaning area that Trump carried in 2020.

Vance visited Valdosta in southern Georgia on Thursday, calling the state “one of the most important” to the outcome of the election.

“Kamala Harris wants to take San Francisco liberalism nationwide, and I think we’re not going to let her,” he said as he met with local law enforcement at an event focused on crime and the border. “Georgia is not going to let her, and I think it starts right here in Valdosta.”

During the Democratic National Convention, Harris’s campaign sought to court Republican voters, giving a speaking slot to Georgia’s former lieutenant governor, Geoff Duncan.

Duncan, who clashed with Trump over the former president’s efforts to overturn the election results in 2020, used his speech to urge his fellow Republicans to “dump Trump.”

“If you vote for Harris in 2024, you are not a Democrat,” he said. “You are a patriot.”

Harris will need the support of some moderate and conservative voters to win the state of Georgia, where Republicans outnumber Democrats, Gillespie said. Going on a bus tour outside of Atlanta’s metropolitan area is one way to try to reach some of those voters, she said.

“Democrats are competitive because there are now more Democrats than there used to be and also because there is a subset of Republicans who are not prepared to vote for a particularly compromised Republican opponent,” she said. “Demographically speaking, this is a play for those conflicted voters.”
