Mumbai, the city of dreams, is India's financial capital and home of the Bollywood movie industry. It's also India's most diverse and extreme city —extending from cosmopolitan and carefree to crushing poverty. One of the country's richest businessmen lives in Mumbai, in a 20-floor tower estimated to have cost up to $2 billion to build. Yet, the city also has one of the largest slums in Asia.

With a current population of more than 20 million people, it's hard to comprehend that Mumbai was once seven sparsely inhabited islands before the British began developing it in the 19th century. Since then, the city has evolved into a complex mix of skyscrapers and swanky shopping malls, Gothic-style British heritage buildings , and age-old infrastructure such as the dhobi-ghat (a massive, manual open-air laundry that was set up in 1890 to service the city's English and Parsi immigrants).

This itinerary for 48 hours in Mumbai incorporates the city's extremes to provide an engaging exploration of its various sides.

One of the best things about Mumbai is that cabs are plentiful and usually go by the meter, without quoting inflated prices for tourists. This means that you can readily follow the itinerary without having to hire a car and driver for the day. Uber is another convenient and inexpensive option, if you're using your cell phone in India.

Day One: Morning and Afternoon

Morning: Arrive in Mumbai and check into your accommodations, preferably somewhere in the Colaba or Fort tourist districts of south Mumbai. If you'd like to stay in luxury , the iconic Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel is ideal. Otherwise, choose from these top cheap hotels and guesthouses or budget hotels in Mumbai. 

Noon: Head over to Leopold Cafe on Colaba Causeway for lunch. Possibly Mumbai's most famous restaurant, it has been in business since 1871 but rose to notoriety in Gregory David Robert's epic book Shantaram , published in 2003. The restaurant was also a target in the 2008 terrorist attack on the city, and it's still possible to see the bullet holes in the walls. A mix of Indian and Continental cuisine is served, but you'll be going there for the atmosphere more so than the food.

2 p.m.: Spend some time browsing through the street market that lines Colaba Causeway . It's a popular place to shop for all kinds of items including inexpensive junk jewelry, clothes, shoes, handicrafts, books, crystals and incense. Make sure you haggle to get the best price ! If shopping at boutiques is more your style, don't miss Clove The Store ( 2 Churchill Chambers, Allana Road ), which recently opened in Colaba's atmospheric Art Deco quarter. This fashion and lifestyle concept store stocks products from a variety of Indian designers, plus Ayurvedic wellness brands.

3 p.m.: Stroll along Colaba's picturesque Strand Promenade (officially renamed as P. J. Ramchandani Marg) from the Radio Club to the Gateway of India. The left side is flanked by crumbling Colonial mansions, while the right side borders the Arabian Sea.

4 p.m.: Splurge on an elaborate high tea at the Sea Lounge of the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel ( Apollo Bunder, opposite the Gateway of India ). This regal heritage hotel dates back to 1903 and oozes history. As its name suggests, the Sea Lounge has expansive sea views across Mumbai Harbour and the Gateway of India.

Day One: Evening

5 p.m.:  Take a cab along Marine Drive towards Girgaum Chowpatty (about 20 minutes away) in time for sunset. This city beach is an evening  hangout spot for Mumbai's residents , who flock there to watch the sun evocatively disappear behind the posh Malabar Hill skyline and munch on snacks from the stalls. Try some  bhel puri, pav bhaji , or  vada pav— classic Mumbai street food. If you're concerned about hygiene and would prefer to sample local fare in a restaurant, Vinay Health Home ( Jawar Mansion, Dr BA Jaikar Marg, Charni Road ) is clean and renowned for its vegetarian Maharashtrian cuisine.

7 p.m.:  Take a cab to  Kala Ghoda  in the Fort area of south Mumbai and wander around this atmospheric arts district. Although the  Jehangir Art Gallery  and Museum Gallery close by 7 p.m., many shops stay open until later.  Sancha Tea Boutique  ( Store 2A, 11A Machinery House Kala Ghoda, Fort. Opposite Trisha restaurant. Closes at 9 p.m. ) is a must-visit for tea lovers.  Kulture Shop  ( 9 Examiner Press, 115 Nagindas Master Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort. Closes at 8 p.m. ) sells unique products by leading Indian graphic artists and is one of the the  top places to buy handicrafts in Mumbai.  Funky fashion and lifestyle store  Chumbak  ( 141 Sassoon Building, M.G. Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort. Next to Khyber restaurant. Closes at 9 p.m.)  also has colorful prints. If you're interested in handwoven Indian clothing and home products,  Fab India  ( 137 Jeroo Building, M.G. Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort. Closes at 8.30 p.m. ) is next to Chumbak.

9 p.m.  There are numerous options in the area for dinner, depending on your palate.  Khyber  ( 145, M.G. Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort ) has won awards for its traditional Northwest Frontier cuisine and has regal Afghan-inspired interiors. The south Indian coastal cuisine at  Trishna  ( 7 Saibaba Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort ) is among the best in Mumbai. Nearby in Colaba, there are some outstanding fine-dining restaurants serving global cuisine.  The Table  ( Kalapesi Trust Building, opposite Dhanraj Mahal, below Hotel Suba Palace, Apollo Bunder ) is highly recommended. Or, if you'd prefer somewhere relaxed and lively, landmark Cafe Mondegar ( Metro House, Colaba Causeway ) has a jukebox and beer.

Day Two: Morning

6 a.m.: Rise and shine early to experience the city as it wakes up (and beat the insane traffic jams). The easiest way to do so is to take a tour, such as this Good Morning Mumbai tour offered by Mumbai Magic. It covers vibrant Dadar wholesale flower market, washing activity at the dhobi ghat , a drive past British heritage buildings with magnificent architecture, and Sassoon Docks to see the fishing trawlers return and get unloaded.

9 a.m.: Feeling hungry? The Pantry ( Yeshwant Chambers, Military Square Lane, near Trishna restaurant, Kala Ghoda, Fort ), Kala Ghoda Cafe ( Bharthania Building A Block, 10 Ropewalk Lane, opposite Trishna restaurant, Kala Ghoda, Fort ) and Bake House Cafe ( 43 Ropewalk Lane, Kala Ghoda, Fort ) all serve delicious gourmet western-style breakfasts, tea, coffee and juice.

10 a.m.: Check out the diverse exhibits at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya ( 159-161 M.G. Road, Fort. Tickets: 500 rupees for foreigners and 85 rupees for Indians ), Mumbai's main museum.

11:20 a.m.: Take a cab to Churchgate railway station (about 10 minutes away) to see the renowned dabba-walas in action. They exit the station between 11.30 a.m. and noon, carrying huge trays of tiffins to be delivered to Mumbai's office workers for lunch.

Noon: Have lunch at nearby Gaylord restaurant ( Mayfair Building, Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate ) if you'd like to eat north Indian or Continental cuisine, or Samrat ( Prem Court Building, Jamshedji Tata Road, Churchgate ) for a traditional vegetarian Gujarati thali (platter).

Day Two: Afternoon and Evening

1 p.m.: Take a cab to Banganga Tank ( Walkeshwar Road, Teen Batti, Malabar Hill ), about 20 minutes away. It's the oldest continually inhabited place in Mumbai, making it one of the most remarkable places to learn about the city's history. You may wish to hire a guide for a tour of the area.

2:30 p.m.: See what's up for grabs at Chor Bazaar , Mumbai's infamous thieves market ( Mutton Street, Kumbharwada, near Mohammad Ali Road . Closed Fridays ). This fascinating 150 year old market has more antique and vintage items than stolen goods, nowadays. However, you won't believe all the stuff that's available there!

4 p.m.: Visit Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum ( 91 A Rani Baug, Veer Mata Jijbai Bhonsle Udyan, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Marg, Byculla East. Tickets: 100 rupees for foreigners and 10 rupees for Indians ) and have afternoon tea at the Museum Cafe. This nostalgic, small museum opened in 1857, and is the oldest in Mumbai. It has been beautifully restored and showcases the cultural heritage of the city.

6 p.m.: Enjoy a cocktail or champagne during happy hours at chic Aer bar ( Four Seasons Hotel, Dr. E. Moses Road, Worli ), while taking in the mesmerizing panoramic views from the 34th floor. It's one of the highest bars in Mumbai.

8 p.m.: Head to the Kamala Mills compound in Lower Parel for dinner at The Bombay Canteen or Farzi Cafe . Once occupied by the city's cotton mills, which proliferated there in the early 1900s, this sprawling industrial area has been redeveloped into Mumbai's hottest dining destination. Both restaurants are highly regarded for their inventive contemporary Indian cuisine. Do reserve a table well in advance!

Day Three: Morning

8 a.m.: Drop into Yazdani Bakery ( 11/11A Cawasji Patel Street, Fort) , one of the oldest Parsi cafes in Mumbai, for chai and brun maska (buttered crusty bread roll). It's freshly baked in a wood-fired oven. The hearty apple fruit pie is also delicious.

9 a.m.: Go on a guided walking tour of Mumbai's massive Dharavi slum . Far from being voyeuristic poverty tourism, the tour gives amazing insight into this inspiring community and its thriving small-scale industry, and shows what people can achieve despite their challenging conditions. You'll be impressed!

One of the most popular Dharavi tours is offered by Reality Tours and Travels (900 rupees per person). It departs from Churchgate railway station daily at 9.15 a.m. Part of the proceeds are used to support Dharavi residents. There's the option to have a home-cooked lunch with a local family afterwards if you wish. Do bring extra money for shopping, as you can buy everything from leather goods to fabric at great prices, made by Dharavi businesses.

The drivers are known to stick to their meters, and so these trips are quite affordable. These cabs can be found scattered throughout the city and are easily hailed. If you can’t find one, hop on an auto-rickshaw instead!

Day 1/Stop 1 – Gateway of India

The British monarch is something that the whole world honors, but Mumbai celebrated the first landing of King-Emperor George VI and Queen-Empress Mary on a whole new level. The arch-building of the Gateway of India was built to commemorate the late, Brittish monarchy’s landing in India in December 1911.

The Indo-Saracenic building style is absolutely beautiful and truly fit to commemorate such a special time in India’s history! It also features gorgeous, 16th-century Gujarati architecture. Construction of the building was started in March 1913, but only the foundation was laid. So, humorously enough, when the monarch visited, a cardboard structure was there to invite them to India. Only years later, in 1924, the monument was finally complete and ready to be admired by the world.

Visiting this site is the perfect way to start your 2-day itinerary in Mumbai, welcoming you into the city, and India as a whole, with open arms! The structure is mind-blowing and took many years to perfect, now it’s one of India’s proudest gems.

Day 1/Stop 2 – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

• Why it’s awesome: One of the most famous museums in Mumbai!
• Cost: USD $7 per adult and 28c per child.
• Food Recommendation: Bite into delicious, South-Indian seafood at Trisha’s. With an intimate setting and a colorful menu, this is a prime location for meals in Mumbai.

The name is a mouthful, but you can translate it to the ‘Museum of Western India Composition’ which is easier to pronounce. This fantastic establishment was originally founded in the 19th century. It’s one of the most famous museums for preserving and sharing cultural knowledge, artwork, and heritage.

The garden in which the museum is set still retains its original plan, but the name of the museum (which used to be Prince of Wales Museum) has changed, as well as some of its structure. This historic building houses outstanding exhibitions, workshops, lectures, events and art activities that can be enjoyed by the public!

There is even a children’s museum on site – where kids can engage in interactive learning opportunities that will teach them about Mumbai’s captivating history. You can also soak in the truly impressive collection of artwork in the gallery, which has everything from sculptures to Himilayan artworks and armor!

Day 1/Stop 3 – Marine Drive

• Food Recommendation: Sit down for a relaxed meal at Frangipani. Delight in fresh, Mediterranian cuisine.

Hop into a cab and explore the 22.4-mile-long stretch that makes up the ever-popular Marine Drive in Mumbai! You’re in for a thrill, as not only is the drive scenic, but the stretch boasts some of the most innovative shops, buildings, and establishments in the city. You can take your pick and stop whenever your heart desires as you explore the promenade.

This C-shaped drive (or walk) is directly along a natural bay. Start at the southern end of Marine Drive and make your way up.  Find peaceful places to enjoy breathtaking ocean views, meet local people and support some of the vendors selling souvenirs.

Nicknamed ‘The Queen’s Necklace’ – because of how it looks from elevated places in Mumbai at night – this is one of the must-visit places on any itinerary for Mumbai!

Day 1/ Stop 4 – Taraporewala Aquarium

Visit an impressive amount of aquatic creatures, such as sharks, manta rays, turtles, eels and starfish. There is so much to see here, and all of these majestic sea creatures teach us something new about the intricate workings of the ocean habitat. See both exotic fish species and local ones all together in harmony at this aquarium.

One of the establishment’s most-loved features is its 12ft long, 180-degree acrylic glass tunnelway. It provides an amazing way to see the fish as they go about their business. Stroll through the tunnel and marvel at the surrounding ocean. You’ll be able to observe these gorgeous creatures up close!

The aquarium boasts 16 saltwater and 9 freshwater tanks all with an array of tropical fish species. There’s no shortage of things to see while you‘re here. So make the most of this opportunity to learn more about the ways of the ocean and all of the astonishing creatures that call it their home!

Day 1/Stop 5 – Girgaon Chowpatty Beach

Get ready to visit one of the most renowned beaches in Mumbai. This mesmerizing coastline is a prime location for both tourists and locals to gather and enjoy the ocean. Break away from the bustling city life and settle into a peaceful beach atmosphere, where you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing!

This white sand beach is the perfect place to unwind. The scenery is fantastic and there are people of all ages that come together to enjoy this wonderful location. You can also taste spicy, raw mangoes from the beach vendors as you take in the surreal views from the shoreline!

Day 2/Stop 2 – The Hanging Gardens

Also known as the Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens , this gorgeous garden is found at the scenic tip of Malabar Hill. With humble beginnings, the gardens were said to have been made over the Bombay (the old name of Mumbai) reservoir to protect it from pollution in 1881.

From here, you get magnificent views over the Arabian Sea. Spend the early morning roaming around the garden being inspired by the expertly landscaped terrace structure.

If you fly over the Hanging Gardens, you’ll see the initials of the old name (PMG) spelled out in cursive using the walkway through the park. You’ll also find charming hedges that have been shaped to look like various animals along the trails. As well as many species of flowers.

This is one of Mumbai’s only green spaces, and it’s truly stunning. You’ll find a grounded, peaceful feeling within the Hanging Gardens..

Day 2/Stop 4 – Shree Mahalakshmi Temple

Built in 1831 by a dedicated Hindu merchant, this old temple stands as a symbol of love and devotion to the Hindu goddess, Mahalakshmi. This goddess is one of the most looked up to, honored and celebrated deities in Hinduism. Mahalakshmi represents prosperity, wealth and good fortune.

Visitors to this temple will find themselves awestruck by the many gorgeous shrines and delicately crafted features. One of these being the muri (or crown) of the goddess that is mounted on a platform high in the temple. This crown is made from fabulous gemstones and weighs over 40kgs!

The incredible statue of the goddess herself is made from smooth, black stone and it is 3ft. high. This image of her is sacred as she holds objects of symbolic value – namely her lotus flowers, a pot that is overflowing with grain and gold, a mhalunga (a sweet, citrus fruit), a kaumodaki (big mace), and a shield.

During the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of both March and September, you can see light shining through the western window directly onto the deity’s face during sundown.

Another one of the temple’s highlights is the beautifully carved Shri Yantra – a powerful symbol of Mahalakshi’s Shakti energy – on the temple walls. Spend your afternoon diving into the heart of the Hindu philosophy and enjoying the peaceful, spiritual ambiance of this famous temple in Mumbai.

Day 2/Stop 5 – Bandstand Promenade

It has pioneered a way for families in Mumbai to make an income by doing the washing of local hotels, hospitals, and homes.

The Dhobi Ghat is made of many rows of concrete walls that are used as wash pens. Each with its very own flogging stone (a stone used to help wash the clothes, sheets and other items). Located at the Mahalaxmi railway station, this is the largest outdoor laundromat in the world !

This is one of the most unique Mumbai points of interest. There are roughly half a million pieces of clothes are sent to this location daily.

You can speak to the dhobis (the washers) and ask them to show you around so you can see how this is all done! The experience is one in a million and will show you the spirit of Mumbai’s hardworking locals and their brilliant ability to adapt and create new ways to bring in an income.

Mumbai has a surprisingly low crime rate for such a big city, but that doesn’t mean that normal safety tips and regulations shouldn’t be taken into consideration. Although most tourists only face petty crimes, nothing too dangerous, you can always prevent running into any sort of trouble at all by keeping your head on your shoulders at all times.

If driving in Mumbai , keep in mind that the streets here have vehicles of all kinds packed together like sardines! Most tourists, when driving themselves, get lost and very frustrated. To avoid this, it’s advised that you make use of public transport.

Sitting on a small islet around 500 m off the southern coast of Mumbai, this age-old edifice set against the Arabian Sea is only accessible during the low tide.

For a true feel of how a Mumbaikar travels, you can take a local train from the nearest station to your hotel and get down at Mahalaxmi (Western Line) or Byculla (Central Line) to reach Haji Ali. Travelling during off-peak hours will save you from tackling the crowds that can otherwise be quite daunting!

Before you go to the mosque, don’t forget to try the refreshing juices and milkshakes at the iconic Haji Ali Juice Centre. It will also keep you full until you reach a breakfast/brunch place in Lower Parel.

As you leave from Lower Parel, take the Worli Sea Face route to finally get on what is one of the most picturesque drives in the city of Mumbai. Yes, it’s time to gear up for the thrilling experience of driving down the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL), a man-made wonder stretching in the middle of the sea.

It will take not more than 10 minutes for you to reach the other end of BWSL, i.e. Bandra Reclamation. From thereon, you can continue your journey to Bandra West to explore what all it has on offer.

Welcome to Mumbai! We have a special connection with this unique city. I spent a lot of my school holidays including summer and winter breaks in the city with my extended family and cousins while C has lived in the larger Mumbai metropolitan area his whole life. I also worked in Mumbai for a year and a half and we still regularly visit Mumbai whenever we travel to India. Suffice to say, our recommendations are totally legit – and local!

Whether you are an expat or a foreign visitor or an Indian tourist, Mumbai will blow your mind! The city’s sheer size and energy is impressive. Also contagious. Beneath the layers of grit and sweat – and trust me, you’ll be sweating a lot in Mumbai – there is an understated elegance and simplicity to this chaotic city. You’ll either fall in love with Mumbai or spend sleepless nights wondering why you didn’t… in which case you should definitely plan another visit!

Mumbai vs Bombay, explained

The history of Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is the key to understanding this Indian behemoth. Most visitors know of Colonial Bombay, the province established by the British with it’s majestic colonial architecture and quintessentially English charm. The Portuguese were the first colonists to establish a settlement in the city and they called it ‘Bom Bahia’ or the good bay.

The British which came thereafter and soon gained control of the Portuguese colony, and renamed it Bombay – an anglicized version of the Portuguese name. In those times, the city was a group of seven marshy islands. The British established basic infrastructure to connect the islands and built various buildings in British colonial style. Bombay soon became the subcontinent’s most important port and flourished.

But before there was Bombay, there was Mumbai – a city named after the goddess worshipped by the fisherfolk of the city. These indigenous people called the ‘Kolis’ were the first settlers of Mumbai. They still live in the city and have contributed immensely to the city’s multicultural vibe. Before the colonial rule, the seven islands were a part of the Hindu – Buddhist empire of King Ashoka. During this period, beautiful stone caves including the Elephanta Caves and Kanheri Caves were carved in Mumbai.

In the 1990s, a political movement of shedding colonial vestiges and going back to indigenous roots swept through the city and in 1995, Bombay was officially renamed to Mumbai. Which actually meant zilch to many Indians like us since we were already calling the city, Mumbai. However, the new Mumbai is vastly different than pre-colonial Mumbai. It is a very modern city and somehow, always, reminds me of New York – sans the skyscrapers. It is incredibly fast paced, vibrant, liberal, and literally never sleeps!

When to visit Mumbai?

Let us break it to you gently, no matter when you go – you are going to be quite, quite hot!

Mumbai and for that matter, India as a whole, has three seasons (technically, six but that’s another story) – summer, monsoons, and winter. You, ideally, don’t want to visit Mumbai in summer or the monsoons. In the summer, you will be sweating buckets and in the monsoon season, you will be drenched from head to toe. Seriously. It never rains in Mumbai but it pours, incessantly, till you are thoroughly tired of it.

Winter on the other hand is a great time to visit Mumbai. And this winter season I’m talking about is pretty long – fall, winter, and spring all rolled in one. So it starts approximately in September and continues up to February. Mumbai winters are super mild – for us locals it means putting on the fan instead of the AC! You will still sweat – but a lot less. I recommend packing in a thin sweater or jacket for balmy nights.

Where to stay in Mumbai?

Mumbai has many hotels and accommodations to suit every budget. You will find luxury 5-star hotels, boutique places, AirBnB penthouses that include your own terrace pools as well as budget-friendly smaller hotels. We recommend staying in South Mumbai – in Colaba, Fort or Marine Drive area – because you will be close to the major tourist destinations. For a room with a view, book a room at the Taj Mahal Palace opposite the Gateway of India or at the Taj Land’s End in Bandra. The Taj hotels is a luxury Indian chain and you can never go wrong while picking a Taj. Other great options are the Trident or the Oberoi. You will get western style amenities and excellent service at all of these hotels.

How to get around Mumbai?

It is very easy to get around in Mumbai, especially in the touristy areas. You will find that public transport in Mumbai is abundant when compared to most other Indian cities. The commuter railway primarily known as the ‘Mumbai Local’ is the lifeline of the city. Other transportation options include the metro rails, the popular BEST public buses, auto rickshaws, black and yellow cabs known as taxis, as well as rideshare services including Uber.

In spite of these many options, getting around Mumbai is not as easy as it looks for outsiders. The local trains are jam packed during rush hours. Even if you manage to get in a local train, there is no guarantee that you can get out at your desired station. Flagging an auto is not easy since the autos are not allowed to enter most areas of Old Mumbai. To add to the confusion, most places in Mumbai have 2 names – old British era names and new official Indian heritage names. That’s why, if traveling during rush hours – we recommend taking a taxi cab or calling Uber.

If you have the time, then we recommend a ride on the iconic local train on weekends or in the quiet afternoon hours. Sitting in the swaying door-less compartments and watching the city rush by is an unparalleled experience.

2 Day Mumbai Itinerary

Truly speaking, 2 days are barely enough to scratch the surface of this gigantic city. For this short time, we recommend concentrating on the downtown area – Old Mumbai or South Mumbai – mainly the neighborhoods of Colaba, Fort, Churchgate, and Marine Drive. This was the historic city center and where most cultural and heritage attractions are located.

A major thing to note – we do not endorse visiting the Dharavi slums on tours of any type and have not included it in our 2 Day Mumbai itinerary. These tours have become increasingly popular since Dharavi slums were featured in the Slumdog Millionaire movie. You will see many companies selling the tours near Gateway of India. The benefits from the tour are said to go to charities but to us it feels unethical and exploitative – not to mention intrusive. If you wish to take such a tour – we suggest researching on whether the tour you select is sensitive towards the slum dwellers.

Day 1 – Gateway of India, Elephanta Caves, Fort district

Begin your day at the iconic Gateway of India and then visit the UNESCO Heritage Site of Elephanta Caves via ferry. End your day in South Mumbai’s Fort district which is renowned for its vast number of restored Gothic style colonial buildings. Here’s a funny fact about this neighborhood – there is no actual fort in the area today! The area is named after Fort George built by the British East India Company in the 18th century; this fort was later demolished in the 19th century. The name however stuck.

Gateway of India

The Gateway of India is one of the country’s most iconic monuments. Located on the Apollo Bunder (in Persian, bunder means port), this arch monument was built in the 20th century on the occasion of then Emperor of India George V and Queen-Empress Mary’s visit to Mumbai. The Gateway is built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture which is a combination of elements from the Mughal style, Hindu temple style, and British colonial style.

Work was started in 1911 and the Gateway was complete in 1924. The design and location of the Gateway was carefully approved by the water’s edge on a piece of land that jutted out – the idea being that visitors arriving by sea to India would first lay their eyes on the majestic gate. The monument was a symbol of the British colonial empire. Viceroys and important British personnel would arrive in India at the Gateway. The Gateway was the site of elaborate ceremonies under the British rule. After independence, the last regiment of the British also marched out under the gate adding to its historic significance.

Seeing the Gateway of India is an awe-inspiring experience. The monument is majestic and overlooks the beautiful Arabian Sea. A flock of pigeons can be always found in its vicinity, creating beautiful photo opportunities. The gateway is Mumbai’s most popular tourist attraction and the area is crowded later in the day and on weekends, so we suggest visiting it at around 8 am to have the monument to yourself. Earlier you could walk up to the Gateway of India and look up its dome but since the Mumbai terrorist attacks of 2008, entry to the Gateway has been restricted.

There are many things to see in the vicinity of the Gateway of India. See the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the beloved Maratha King of western India. You can also see a statue of Swami Vivekananda, most famous for introducing Hinduism and yoga to the western world. Opposite the Gateway, you will find the beautiful Taj Mahal Palace hotel. The luxury hotel is a tourist attraction in its own way. The historic building built in the Indo-Saracenic style is a symbol of India’s progress and resilience following the terrorist attacks. Several jetties are located behind the Gateway Monument – ferries travel to Alibaug, Elephanta Caves, and other popular attractions from here. You can also take a short local ferry ride to see the Gateway from the water.

Elephanta Caves

Travel back in time and see the magnificent cave temples of Elephanta. These caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and have beautifully preserved rock art dating back to the 6th century. The caves are Hindu and Buddhist temples dedicated to Shiva, one of the most worshipped Hindu gods. The island also contained other sculptures including that of a stone elephant, hence the name of the caves. This elephant statue is now located at the Jijamata Udyan, the oldest public gardens in Mumbai.

The artwork found in the caves is beautiful and an excellent remainder of the rich Indian culture. The rock cut caves are equally majestic and simply take your breath away. The caves and its’ artwork were severely damaged during the Portuguese and Muslim rule in Mumbai but have since then been very carefully restored. Many other archeological remains going as far as the 2nd century BC have also been discovered on the island.

The Elephanta Caves are located on the island of Gharapuri close to Old Bombay. Gharapuri literally means the city of caves. They can be reached by taking a ferry from the Gateway of India – you will also see great views of the Gateway and Taj Mahal hotel from the ferry for free. The ferry ride takes about 40 mins and is quite safe, even for the littles. Ferry times are from 9 am to 2 pm from Mumbai to Elephanta and from 12 pm to 5 pm for Elephanta to Mumbai. The ferries are about 30 mins apart. The caves are closed on Mondays, so plan your trip accordingly. Weekdays are ideally the best times to visit due to lower crowds.

Properly exploring Elephanta and its treasures is a day’s work. If you are short on time, visit the most popular Cave 1 which has a 7 metre high sculpture of Shiva. For more detailed information about the beliefs represented in the carvings, see here . To reach the main cave, you will need to walk 120 steps or take a small toy train up to the cave. Allot at least 4 hrs for the excursion including 2 hrs for to and fro ferry and 2 hrs to explore the caves. For the purpose of this itinerary we suggest taking the first ferry out at 9 am and returning via the 12 pm ferry.

Leopold Cafe / Bademiya

After arriving at the Gateway of India from your Elephanta excursion, have a cold beer at Leopold Cafe or the famous baida roti at Bademiya. Both these eateries are celebrated Mumbai institutions and conveniently located a few blocks away from the Gateway.

Leopold Cafe and Bar first opened its doors in 1871. The most unique thing about Leopold Cafe is its feature in the book ‘Shantaram’ as the cafe which Linbaba frequents. The restaurant is located downstairs while upstairs is the bar area. We love hanging out in the bar at a corner table and drinking beer. The restaurant serves typical Western and Mughlai fare including pastas, sandwiches, and Indo-chinese dishes. You can also grab breakfast here before you follow our 2 Days in Mumbai itinerary – if you do try out the Akuri, Parsi-style scrambled eggs. Leopold cafe was one of the sites targeted in the Mumbai terrorist attack because of its large number of foreign visitors. You can still see bullet holes in the wall of the restaurant when you visit.

Bademiya has been open since 1946 and even Bollywood film actors flock to the eatery in the middle of the night to sample some of their famous kebabs. The sit down restaurant is open throughout the day while the street food cart which serves food in the cart is open from late evening to wee hours of the night. Things to eat at Bademiya include the famous Baida Roti – ground chicken stuffed flatbread, the Chicken Tikka roll, Bhuna Gosht (mutton dish), seekh kebabs, and the Butter Chicken with roomali roti. Vegetarians will love their paneer rolls. Though to be honest, we would say order anything you want – it will be finger licking good!

Fort District

For the rest of the day explore the Fort area between Wellington Fountain, Horniman Circle Garden, and Flora Fountain. This area contains some of Mumbai’s top tourist attractions and is also the art district of Mumbai. The Kala Ghoda Art Festival is held in this area every year and is an essential experience if you are visiting during this time. There is so much to do in this area that you can easily spend 1 or 2 days here. We suggest picking a few places to explore thoroughly and then walking the streets to get a feel of the area. Many boutique stores, art galleries, cafes, and eateries are also located here, making it a great place to explore. Here is a short introduction to the area’s most popular attractions:

Jehangir Art Gallery – Mumbai’s most famous art gallery hosts exhibitions by contemporary Indian artists. Entry to the gallery is free and the artwork on display is always worth a visit. If it’s not raining, you will also find artists selling artwork outside the gallery. While you are at the gallery, check out the turquoise blue Jewish synagogue just across the street.

National Gallery of Modern Art – The National Gallery of Modern Art  (NGMA) in Mumbai is India’s premier art museum and home to various collections and exhibitions by national and international artists. The gallery has over 14,000 works including those by Pablo Picasso, MF Hussain, and Rabindranath Tagore as well as other historic artifacts including Egyptian mummies. If you have to choose between NGMA and Jehangir Gallery, we would recommend the NGMA for its extensive collection.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya – Formerly Prince of Wales museum, this museum has a vast, well-curated history, archeology, and art collection and is India’s best museum. If you can’t find it – ask anyone for the Prince of Wales museum. The museum building itself is one of Mumbai’s finest – designed by the same architect who designed the Gateway of India – and is a heritage structure. Museum collection includes artifacts from the subcontinent, the Far East as well as Europe. The museum is the best place to view the extremely rare Indus civilization artifacts including pots, bricks etc. The museum is closed on Mondays so plan to go accordingly.

INS Vikrant Memorial – Located adjacent to the museum, this memorial is dedicated to the Indian battleship Vikrant that played a significant part in the Indo-Pak War of 1971. The sculpture is created from metal that belonged to the decommissioned ship.

Bombay Stock Exchange – The Bombay Stock exchange building (BSE) is officially called the Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers. Located on Dalal Street, the building is a must see in the area. BSE is Asia’s first stock exchange and the 10th largest in the world.

Kala Ghoda Statue – Kala Ghoda means the Black Horse. In the colonial times, a black stone statue of King Edward VII atop a horse used to be in the area. That’s how the area got its name. In 1965, the statue was relocated to Byculla Zoo to avoid British rule reminders and for almost 5 decades the area was without the namesake statue. Finally in 2017, a new statue graces the area this time of a sole horse without anyone on its back!

Oval Maidan – This is a large recreational ground where you will often find cricket being played. The buildings surrounding the ground are more significant than the ground itself. Most of these buildings are British era heritage structures and boast of striking architectural features. They together form Mumbai’s newest UNESCO World Heritage Site called the ‘Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai’, added to the list in 2018. You can read more about it here . Some of the famous buildings include the Bombay High Court building, Rajabai Clock Tower, etc. The Rajabai Clock Tower is 280 feet high and is modeled on Big Ben in London.

St. Thomas Cathedral – Built in 1718, St. Thomas Cathedral is the first church by the british in Mumbai. The church has ornate architecture and a beautiful facade. The surrounding area came to be called Churchgate after this church. Also see the Bombay House next door which is the headquarters of the Tata Group, the Indian conglomerate.

Town Hall – Located exactly opposite the Horniman Circle Garden, the Town Hall has Roman – Greek architectural features including Doric pillars. The town hall today houses the Asiatic Society library which has innumerable antique manuscripts in Urdu, Prakrit, Persian, and Urdu. Apart from the library, the Town Hall also houses a museum which contains ancient coins including one issued by Akbar, the Mughal ruler. The Town Hall is closed on Sundays.

Flora Fountain and Hutatma Memorial Statue – Flora Fountain is a beautiful fountain dedicated to the Roman goddess Flora. The fountain is located in Hutatma Square (Martyr’s Square). Five streets meet in this huge area and so it is likened to the five-way Piccadilly Circus of London. The adjacent Hutatma memorial is dedicated to those who laid their life for the creation of Maharashtra state.

And now, here’s a secret that not many will tell you about!

The Bookshacks – While the monuments in this area are beautiful, I love the area surrounding Flora Fountain for another reason – the pavements are lined with shacks selling all kinds of books! This area is any book lover’s dream – you will find classics, fiction, non-fiction, used books, latest bestsellers and even pirated editions. Most of the books are priced under Rs 150 (~$2) and you simply can’t resist.

The books are arranged in random piles, are dusty, and you really need to rummage through them to find your favorites. But if you spend enough time, you are bound to find something you want. On my last visit, I left Flora Fountain with fourteen classics!

Don’t disregard the booksellers; they might not have read any of those books but tell them the author name and they’ll find your book. Or inform you that your reading choices aren’t in vogue with the times! The best part about buying books here? If you return a book, you can receive up to half the price back.

Horniman Circle Garden – Once you have your book in hand, go and read it in Horniman Circle Garden. This large public garden is a welcome respite from the crowd and activity of Mumbai. It has nice play area for kids.

End your day by visiting some of Mumbai’s iconic restaurants located around Horniman Circle Garden. Here are our top 5 recommendations; all of them are within walking distance.

Yazdani Restaurant & Bakery or Jimmy Boy – Visit any of these Irani cafes (for an introduction to Irani cafes, see below in Day 2 of Mumbai Itinerary) not for the ambience but the scrumptious food. Try kheema pav (ground mutton gravy with bread) or the patra ni macchi (steamed fish) at Jimmy Boy. At Yazdani, sample some apple pie, berry biscuits, brun maska, pastries and cakes.

Mahesh Lunch Home – If you love seafood then try the prawns, surmai, and pomfret at Mahesh Lunch Home. The restaurant serves authentic Mangalorean seafood and is one of Mumbai’s institutions. Must try are the Tandoori starters, crab, and neer dosa. Also order some solkadhi, a cool refreshing drink made from coconut milk and kokum – a sour fruit indigenous to India.

Bademiya – If you missed lunch at Bademiya, there’s another outlet near Horniman Circle. Order the kebabs – you won’t regret it!

Burma Burma – This is not as near as the others and you might need to take a cab but the food is worth it. They have delicious Burmese food, lots of vegan options and awesome desserts.

If you are in the mood for something hip, hit up The Bar Terminal . This gastropub has an extensive cocktail and drinks menu plus many unique drinks. The food while tasty is vegetarian only but you won’t regret it due to the lovely ambience.

Starbucks – We get it! After that hectic day, you are pining for something familiar. Hit up the Starbucks located opposite the Horniman Circle and order your favorite coffee!

Day 2 – Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Crawford Market, Marine Drive

Today explore the precincts of Churchgate, Marine Lines, and rest of the Fort area. Visit the world’s busiest railway station, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and fall in love with its architecture. Shop at Crawford Market and then have a relaxing day by the sea at Marine Drive. Visit Mani Bhavan to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi and end with a romantic drive on the Bandra Worli sea link.

Kyani Bakery & Co

Start your day by sampling one of Mumbai’s most celebrated cuisines: Irani food. If you feel it’s the same as Persian food, think again! In the colonial era, the city had a host of Irani cafes which were started by Zoroastrians who migrated to India from Iran in the 20th century. While many of these faded away, the surviving have achieved cult status.

These no fuss cafes have bare bones furniture, meagre customer service, and delicious food. Stepping inside one is like going back in time – the interiors and menus have remained unchanged since the opening. The menu is unique: a fusion of old world Parsi dishes, colonial taste buds, and Indian spices!

Kyani Bakery & Co. is one of the oldest surviving Irani cafes in the city – and also our personal favorite. For breakfast, try the brun maska (Irani style buttered bread) and the Irani masala chai. If you are feeling more adventurous try spicy kheema pav or the delicious mutton samosa. Stop by the bakery section and get a few cookies, biscuits, and pastries to go.

Crawford Market

Crawford Market is one of Mumbai’s most famous market. It is as well-known for its architecture as for what’s inside. The market building was built in 1869 and named after the first Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, Arthur Crawford. Like all other places in Mumbai, it was renamed after Independence to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market after the Indian social reformer who worked for the cause of women’s education. The building has beautiful architecture and some of the architectural elements including the friezes and stone fountains are designed by John Kipling, Rudyard Kipling’s father.

Inside you will find everything from produce, meats, household goods, cosmetics, apparel, and even a pet store selling the regular as well as exotic pets. Walking in the market is fascinating and a photographer’s delight. Here you will get all kinds of exotic pictures of Indian markets: mounds of spices, colorful bangles, fruits piled up high on the floor, jar after jar of dry fruits, and vegetables from all over the world.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

The grand-daddy of all of Mumbai’s railway stations! Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was formerly known as Victoria Terminus after Queen Victoria – you will still see many locals referring to it as VT! The Terminus is another of Mumbai’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It was built in 1888 and has a beautiful Victorian Gothic Revival style of architecture. The building is awe-inspiringly majestic. Inside you will find one of the busiest railway stations and a sea of humanity! Walk inside to explore the features as well as people watch. Observe the snack stalls, book stores, shoe polish men, and chai wallahs at work. At night CST is lit up with the colors of the Indian flag and looks splendid.

Here’s an insider tip to this wonderful monument: The Heritage wing of the building is open to the public and even has an excellent museum with model rails, old rail logos, etc. If you want to explore the building in depth, consider taking the Heritage tour of about 45 minutes offered by the Central railways. The tours are offered only in the afternoons on weekdays, to buy your tickets inquire at the CST Heritage Gallery Museum. Read more about the tours here .

Bachelorr’s at Azad Maidan

Bachelorrs is a famous ice cream and milkshake place. It also serves fresh cut fruits and fun snacks like sandwiches and more. There is limited seating but is much bigger than their original location on Charni Road / Marine Drive area. Famous cricketers, bollywood stars and starlets, politicians, and people from all walks of life love visiting Bachelorrs. Even Mahatma Gandhi is said to have eaten fruits at the original location while he resided at Mani Bhavan. Bachelorrs is famous for their strawberry shakes but my personal favorite is the seasonal sitaphal shake. Sitaphal or sugar apple / custard apple is an exotic tropical fruit that tastes delicious in shakes and icecreams. Their chocolate shake is supposed to be the best in the world – go ahead, give it a try!

Fashion Street

On the opposite side of Azad Maidan, you will find Fashion Street. Like the name suggests, this street is full of shops selling apparel in the latest trends and all kinds of accessories from purses to shoes. Fashion Street is like shopping at a high end flea market. There is just one thing you need to remember about shopping at Fashion Street – it is all about bargaining! I have bought clothes for under a dollar or two and bargained to less than 75% of the original price.

Taraporewala Aquarium

If you have kids with you, you must stop at the Taraporewala Aquarium. Even adults will love this aquarium located off Marine Drive. It’s easy to identify the building by the fish painted on its facade. The aquarium has a large number of saltwater and freshwater species including turtles, sharks, corals and more. The highlight of the visit is the recently added 12 feet long 180 degree glass tunnel. It also screens documentaries about marine conservation. The aquarium is closed on Mondays.

Marine Drive

Marine Drive is Mumbai’s famous seaside promenade. It is popularly called the Queen’s necklace because of its unique curved shape – if you see it from above at night, the zillions of street lights along the promenade make it look like a string of pearls! Marine Drive connects the neighborhoods of Nariman Point and Malabar Hill and is a six-lane highway. It also has a beautiful, wide walking path along the coast.

Walking along Marine Drive is a delight. The promenade is lined with palm trees and historic buildings. You will see plenty of buildings in Art Deco and colonial styles. Many of Mumbai’s luxe hotels are also situated along the drive. Mumbai’s iconic sports clubs and the two famous cricket stadiums – Wankhede Stadium and Brabourne Stadium are also located along Marine Drive. At the far northern end you will find Girgaum’s famous Chowpatty beach.

We recommend walking along Marine Drive and sitting on its edges to get a feel of Mumbai. You will see lovers sitting on rocks, fishing boats out on the sea, luxury cars dashing along the road, rich people’s dog walkers, and locals jogging along the promenade. If you happen to spot a chaiwallah – a street vendor selling tea – then grab a glass and inhale the fresh aroma! In summer, try sugarcane juice or kulfi – India’s unique creamy ice pop. In monsoon or on windy days, watch the waves crash onto the rocks and spray the promenade. Stay for the romantic sunset and then watch the city lights go up along the drive!

Marine Drive Northern End – Babulnath / Malabar Hill area

You can either end your day at the Marine Lines area of Marine Drive or walk up to the north side. You can also take a cab to the far end. This area has many popular attractions and is a great place to visit. Here are the most popular things to do in the area:

Chowpatty Beach – Go at the right time and Chowpatty Beach is the most beautiful place in Mumbai. Go on weekends, at sunset, or during Ganesh Visarjan times and the area is a madhouse. Our favorite time to visit is on weekdays before rush hours or late at night. Then you will have the entire area to yourself. Swim in the sea or sunbathe on the beach or build sandcastles. Walk upto the shaved ice stands and try some of Mumbai’s famed shaved ice. The best flavors to try are kacchi kairi (raw mango) and kala khatta (Indian blackberry). Also try some of the Indian chaat food including bhel, pani puri etc.

Original Bachelorrs – If you walk the entire length, then we recommend stopping at Bachelorrs located at Charni Road for its fresh fruit juices. This is the original Bachelorrs and opened way back in the 1930s. Like Mumbai’s most eateries, this roadside shack has no seating, but you will spot a huge line of college goers, office workers, kids and their grandparents.

Mani Bhavan – Mani Bhavan museum is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi’s work and life. Mahatma Gandhi was the Indian political activist who led the nonviolent non-cooperation movement against the British rule and is called the Father of the Nation. His portrait is present on the Indian currency notes. Mahatma Gandhi resided in Mani Bhavan and launched his most popular freedom movements including Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Khilafat etc. The museum has many photographs and exhibits about Gandhi’s life. You can also see his room, bed, and other belongings. Mani Bhavan is a great place to learn about one of India’s most revered founding fathers.

ISKCON Swaminarayan Temple – Located adjacent to Mani Bhavan, the ISKCON Chowpatty Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir is a must visit. Stay for only 10 mins if you are short on time or sit in peace and meditate for a hour. The temple is beautiful – made from white marble and beautifully carved and extremely photogenic. Be sure to not take photos inside the temple as that is disrespectful – also wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees before you go. The temple cafeteria also sells delicious Jain food (vegetarian, no onion, no garlic) and is a great place to eat if you are hungry.  

Starbucks – To get your familiar coffee on Day 2, stop at the Starbucks located near Wilson College.

Dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking Mumbai

Splurge on a cozy view worthy dinner at one of Mumbai’s top rooftop restaurants. We recommend either Asilo located in the St. Regis in Lower Parel area or AER in Four Seasons at Worli. Both have gorgeous views of Mumbai from high above and great food. However, you will easily run up a tab of INR 6k to 7k (~$100) for two people at these restaurants – but it’s so worth the luxe ambience, and the views!

Bandra Worli Sea Link

Hire a cab and have a late night romantic drive down the Bandra Worli Sea Link for a spectacular finish to the 2 Day Mumbai itinerary. We recommend this after 10-11 pm when the traffic has considerably lessened and you will be able to enjoy the majestic views. Bandra Worli Sea Link is one of Mumbai’s newest architectural gems and opened less than a decade ago. Construction and design of the bridge had its own challenges due to saline water and complex geology. As a result, the completed bridge is a superb engineering feat. The cable stayed bridge looks marvellous at night. Pedestrians, motorcycles, and autos are not allowed on the bridge; also you need to pay toll to travel across the bridge.

That’s it! You now have a complete blueprint for your own bespoke tour of Mumbai’s premier attractions located in the old town. However, the suburbs of Mumbai have their own story and we suggest another visit to completely explore India’s film, fashion, and finance capital.

At a distance of 4 km from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Gateway of India is a national heritage monument located at the waterfront in Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai, facing Arabian Sea. When I went to India I first started my journey in Mumbai (also known as Bombay). I didn’t really know what to expect – would this city be crazy?

Well, I was surprisingly not shocked at all!  I had so many expectations towards India that I was actually quite surprised how it turned how to be different.

Mumbai is a modern city where people can be quite open-minded and where it’s not that crazy (unless you’re stuck in traffic).

Mumbai is also known for its Bollywood culture, its slums (ever heard of Slumdog Millionaire?) and for its coastal views.

I first spent one day in Mumbai and I also ended up back there towards the end of my trip to India. I was there for three days and more importantly, I was there to celebrate Holi .

Here’s my quick guide to Mumbai featuring the best things to do and where to stay in Mumbai. Of course, you can also visit Mumbai in one day, but let’s pretend you will stay a bit longer!

My favorite way to discover a new city is always walking. It gives me the time to understand, soak in the culture and appreciate the differences. Of course, this is the same for Mumbai too!

Visit Mumbai – Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat is an open-air laundromat! You can’t really get inside unless you pay a guide, but you can still see it from above (just before getting down the stairs).

This experience showed me another side of India – it made me realize how different it is/how beautiful it is.

Visit Mumbai – Gateway of India

The Gateway of India is an arch monument located next to the waterfront. It’s one of the city’s top attractions and you have cool photo opportunities from the big square. It’s free and definitely worth stopping for it.

The area is quite pretty and you might be surrounded by birds (which is a big bonus if you ask me!).

Colaba Fish Market was one of my highlights in Mumbai. It does smell quite bad, but it’s a fish market, isn’t it? Personally, this was one of the best sights in Mumbai as it shows you the reality and it allows you to be closer to the friendly locals.

People were smiling a lot and it was a photographer’s heaven. I could easily have spent a couple of hours in the area but we were on a tight schedule.

Visit Mumbai – Bollywood Tour

Been there, and haven’t tried it, but if I was to come back to Mumbai, I would definitely try to be cast in a Bollywood movie. (Or at least, I would go on a Bollywood tour!)

Mumbai is the Bollywood central of India where over 100 movies are filmed each year. I’d recommend going on a guided tour to understand the famous Indian film industry!

I loved everything about Trident Nariman Point – from the enormous breakfast to the view I had from my room!

Bonus: the staff was very helpful and lovely! It’s an excellent place if you’re looking for a place to stay in Mumbai.

Mumbai, formerly called Bombay, is located on India’s west coast and is the country’s largest city with a population of over 21 million.

Known as the commercial capital of India, Mumbai attracts people from all over India looking to make their fortunes, resulting in a mix of religions and cultures all living harmoniously together.

It is has beautiful parks, beaches and iconic landmarks such as the Gateway of India. Along with a mix of old and new architecture, markets, street food, shops, restaurants, cafes and much more.

Building a one day in Mumbai itinerary is tough, with so much to see and do. So we’ve narrowed down all the best parts, into how to do Mumbai in a day.

How To Get Around Mumbai

Getting around Mumbai couldn’t be easier. There are generally 3 options:

The train system in Mumbai is the most common form of local transport.

However, you must be aware that the trains running through the city are hugely over-crowded, particularly during rush hour.

The fare for train journeys in Mumbai starts from just 5 Rupees, to a maximum of 200 Rupees, depending on the distance between your stations.

Tickets can be bought at each station by paying with coins at the ticket from the counters.

A quick tip if you’re looking to avoid the queues is to cough up for first class. It may be the difference of 50 Rupees but could save you a lot of time standing around.

Just be aware that the carriages on the Mumbai trains are divided between ‘Ladies’ and ‘General’, so don’t get mixed up in the wrong compartment.

Taxi/Tuk Tuk

Mumbai taxis start from 22 Rupees, and are easy to hail anywhere in the city. Often referred to as Kaali-Peeli Cabs, just keep your eye out for the little black and yellow Fiat’s.

They are fairly inexpensive, and the drivers tend to use the meter for the most part so you should get a fair price.

The traffic situation is never good in Mumbai, therefore most people stick to using the trains.

The other option is to jump in a Tuk Tuk (or Rickshaw as known in India).

These are supposed to start even lower at 18 Rupees, however you’ll rarely find a rickshaw driver using the metre.

Haggling is always a starting point of conversation with rickshaws, so have your wits about you and be sure to agree a price before you get in the vehicle.

Uber is also available in some parts of the city for a fixed price option.

Best Time To Visit Mumbai

The best time to visit Mumbai is probably during the winter months from December to March. This is when the weather is dry and sunny but not overbearingly hot.

The temperatures can get very hot from April onwards, with monsoon season generally during the months of June, July and August. This is when there are torrential downpours and high humidity.

Remember, this is just a guide, so you may want to mix it up and add/subtract different attractions.

Mumbai Itinerary Day 1

Dharavi slums.

The first destination we recommend on your one day in Mumbai itinerary are the infamous Dharavi Slums .

Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, considered to be one of the largest slums in the world.

With a total area of just 2.1 square kilometres, and home to a population of around 700,000 people, you can imagine how compact and hectic the living quarters are.

To reach Dharavi the best options are to hire a rickshaw if you’re close, or jump on the train and get off at Mahim Junction.

From Mahim Junction you’ll be able to see the slums, and simply cross the railway to enter.

We opted to visit alone, and the people in the neighbourhood couldn’t have been more welcoming.

We received a few funny looks passing over the wrong side of the train tracks, but once we reached the heart of the community we were greeted by smiling faces!

If you do wish to have a guide, there are many tours available. However, just be sure to find out exactly where the money is going.

One of the top recommendations is the Ethical Dharavi Walking Tour , which promises that profits are re-invested in community initiatives such as education, skills development and healthcare projects.

”Learn the challenges of migrants as they settled into this community, their entrepreneurial stories and how to debunk the negative stereotypes of slums.”

Children ran towards us open armed, families invited us into their homes and even offered to cook food for us. Supposedly the most dangerous part of the city, turned out to be our favourite.

Gateway Of India & The City

From Dharavi the best way to reach the city is via the Suburban Train from Mahim Junction to Marine Lines.

Trains run every 4 minutes, and the journey takes roughly 30 minutes in total.

It will drop you within walking distance of Marine Drive. A 3.6-kilometre-long promenade that links Malabar Hill to Churchgate.

For the majority of your one day in Mumbai itinerary you’re going to want to explore around these areas.

If you’re looking to visit Elephanta Caves you can purchase ferry tickets from the Gateway of India. The ferry takes roughly 1 hour to reach the island.

8. Taraporewala Aquarium

Taraporewala Aquarium is the oldest aquarium of India and it has over 100 species of fish and other aquatic animals.

9. Churchgate

Churchgate is the business district of Mumbai. It has offices of many banks and business organisations. It also has the High Court of Bombay and many reputed educational institutions.

The area is known as Churchgate because the Church Gate of the old, walled-city Mumbai used to be here. It was demolished in 1860.

10. Mahalakshmi Temple

The temple also has the idols of Goddess Mahakali and Mahasaraswati. And devotees come here, throughout the year, for blessings.

11. Bandra Worli Sea Link

Bandra Worli Sea Link is a 5 km long bridge built on the Arabian Sea; it connects Bandra and Worli. The bridge is known for its architectural magnificence, and it is the first cable-stayed bridge built on the open sea in India. It is also one of the prominent landmarks of Mumbai.

12. Haji Ali Dargah

Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque built on an islet, only a few hundred metres away from Shree Mahalakshmi Temple. And a narrow, pebbled walkway connects it to the mainland. Haji Ali is also the shrine of a Sufi saint, Haji Ali Shah Bukhari.

This mosque was built in 1431, in the Indo-Islamic style. The central courtyard of the complex is made of marble. And the ceiling in the main hall is also of marble. It has been decorated with various coloured mirror patterns and Arabic inscriptions. You'll also notice Quran verses on the ceilings and the walls.

The tallest minaret of Haji Ali Dargah is 85 feet high. And from that minaret, namaz calls are made at the five designated times of the day.

13. Castella De Aguada (Bandra Fort)

Castella de Aguada (or Bandra Fort) was built by the Portuguese to guard the sea route and fortify the area around. It is built in the European style, with granite blocks, and it offers a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea.

Much of the fort is in ruins today, but the view captivates many tourists. It is also a preferred hangout spot for the youths, and among the most popular places to visit in Mumbai for couples.

16. Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum is a place for entertainment, knowledge and relaxation. It is near Mumbai Zoo, and it is the oldest museum in the city. In the museum, you'll find artefacts, maps and manuscripts showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of Mumbai.

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum was opened to the public in 1872. And the place has been known for its magnificence too. The grand metal palisades, staircase railings and the arched supports were all imported from England. And the etched glass designs are reminiscent of the glorious 19th-century architectural style.

The temple is built in the classic ancient Hindu temple style. It has one high spire, with a red flag flying on its top. And the walls are etched with religious mantras and shlokas prominent in the Hindu temples.

During festivals like Navratri, it is decorated with flowers and lights, and the celebrations go on for 10 days. People come from many places to be a part of the religious ceremonies and enjoy the ongoing fair.

19. Flora Fountain

Flora Fountain is one of the tourist places within Churchgate. It stands at the same place where the destroyed ChurchGate of Mumbai used to be.

The fountain was designed by R. Norman Shaw, and it has a mix of Neo-Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles. It was built in 1864, by Engineer James Forsythe.

This Portland stone structure has fine carvings and sculptures. Its four corners are decorated with different statues. And the water basin below has stone fish figures and lion heads.

A magnificent 7 feet high statue of Roman Goddess Flora adorns the fountain top. And you can enjoy a spectacular view of Flora Fountain in the evening; when it's illuminated by lights.

20. Jehangir Art Gallery

Jehangir Art Gallery has played a prominent role in the evolution of contemporary Indian art. It was established in 1952 with the help of Sir Cowasji Jehangir’s donations. And since then, this art gallery has hosted numerous exhibitions for painters, sculptors, and other artists.

But it’s more than a venue for art exhibitions. Jehangir Art Gallery conducts workshops and other art programmes. And it’s a must-visit place for aspiring artists and art connoisseurs.

21. Rajabai Clock Tower

Rajabai Clock Tower is an 85-metre tall tower in the Fort Campus of the University of Mumbai. Premchand Roychand, a businessman and a stockbroker, financed its construction. And Sir George Gilbert Scott designed it.

The tower resembles London’s Big Ben, and it is among the tallest structures in the area. It chimes every fifteen minutes. The construction began in 1869, and it was completed by 1878.

The access to the inside of the tower is closed to visitors, but you can admire the architecture and detailed stonework from outside. The tower has one of the best stained-glass works in the city. And the architecture is a blend of Venetian-Gothic style. The tower also has 24 small statues, portraying the life of common people during British rule.

22. Bombay High Court

Bombay High Court is one of the oldest High Courts in India, and it’s a UNESCO-recognised site . It was built in the 19th century, in the grand Gothic Revival architectural style. And you'll find traces of Victorian style too.

Here, you can click photographs of this heritage building and visit the museum within the premises. The museum of Bombay High Court provides plenty of information about the Indian judicial system and Indo-British legal history. It has preserved many historical documents too.

And while you're here, you can also be a part of the ongoing hearings. The court looks after the events in Maharashtra and Goa. And two Union Territories – Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, also fall under the jurisdiction of this court.

23. Raj Bhavan

Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of Maharashtra. And you can visit it during your Mumbai tour.

It has lush green lawns, conserved forest areas and heritage buildings in the complex. The place is spread over an area of around 50 acres in the picturesque Malabar Hill, and the sea surrounds it on three sides.

The buildings are built in varied architectural styles: from British colonial style to Maratha style and modern Indian style of architecture. And the complex also has a British-era bunker, which has been turned into a museum.

Mount Mary Church is also famous for the annual Bandra Fair. It is celebrated in September on the birthday of Mother Mary. The church holds a feast on the day, and the area surrounding it experiences a week-long carnival-like celebration.

26. Fort Bassein (Vasai Fort)

Fort Bassein (or Vasai Fort) is a 500-year old Portuguese fort near Vasai-Virar. And it is among the most popular places to visit in Mumbai outskirts.

At its prime, Fort Bassein was a complete city. It had administrative blocks, churches, hospitals, and the Portuguese used it as their base to control the region. The fort also used to be the official residence of the Portuguese governor when he was here.

27. Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves are a collection of 109 Buddhist caves. These caves used to be a Buddhist monastery, and they’ve been built over a long period. The earliest caves are from the 1st century BCE, while the most recent ones are from the 11th century CE.

Paintings and stone sculptures adorn the walls of the caves. Statues of Buddha in various postures and sizes are in the caves. And you'll also find numerous inscriptions in Brahmi and Devanagari, and some epigraphs in Pahlavi, on the walls.

These caves served as a place for worship, study and meditation. Cave 3 is the largest among the Kanheri Caves, and the most remarkable.

This serene cave complex is situated on a hillside, and it takes a long trek through lush green bushes and rocks to reach here. This site has numerous small streams and waterfalls too. And it also offers a view of the sprawling Mumbai city.

28. Global Vipassana Pagoda

Global Vipassana Pagoda is a meditation dome on the outskirts of Mumbai. The dome is built as a tribute to a Vipassana teacher – Sayagyi U Ba Khin, and it resembles the Shwedagon Pagoda of Myanmar.

The dome of the pagoda is the world’s largest stone dome standing without any supporting pillars. And 8000 people can meditate at a time here.

The architectural pagoda and the intricately carved gates are among the major points of tourist interests. But there also are other structures like the 21.5 feet high statue of Gautam Buddha, the Bell Tower and the Gong Tower. The pagoda complex also has a park, a small waterfall and a replica of the Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath.

Global Vipassana Pagoda spreads the values of Gautam Buddha through its meditation and relaxation sessions. And you can also take meditation courses. The campus has a library and a museum too.

29. Essel World

Essel World is an amusement park, only a few metres from Global Vipassana Pagoda. It’s a popular getaway for relaxation for local people, and it is also among the famous amusement parks in India.

During British rule, it was a source to buy daily fresh produce. And it’s still a popular place to get good deals on various household goods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

The system is well-optimised, and each cloth is coded to be traced back to the client.

This laundry was set up by an association of 50 washers in 1890. And today, around 700 washer families live here. And although some have installed washing and drying machines, most still carry on their work manually.

Dhobi Ghat has maintained much of its old charm and washing methods.
