Canadian Cyclists In The Tour de France 2024

When the Tour de France 2024 gets underway June 29 in Florence, Italy, three Canadian riders will be at the starting line ready to pursue the stage wins and colorful jerseys.

Guillaume Boivin , Derek Gee and Hugo Houle – all riding for the Israel-Premier Tech team – will be the ones representing the Great White North, while well-known Canuck Michael Woods, a stage winner at the event in 2023, sits out the 2024 race.

Boivin, 35, is a longtime member of the Premier Tech squad and has ridden in a support role to help set up his teammates for success on the biggest stages in the sport, but he also has seen the spotlight as a three-time Canadian road champion and past Olympian.

Houle, 33, has one major professional win to his name, and it was a big one – Stage 16 of the 2022 Tour de France , which made him the first Canadian individual since 1988, and third Canadian overall, to reach the top of the podium at the Tour de France.

Steve Bauer broke through for Canada in France by winning the first stage of the 1988 event, while Ryder Hesjedal was part of the Team Garmin – Cervelo squad that won the team time trial on Stage 2 in 2011.

Houle, who will be racing in his sixth consecutive Tour de France, went on to finish a career-best of 23rd overall in 2022 and followed that performance with a 38th-place finish in 2023.

Though Houle’s best stage finish last year was 13th (Stage 15), he played an important role in helping Woods take Stage 9 of the prestigious race.

Michael Woods Not Competing In Tour de France 2024

With Woods skipping the 2024 Tour de France, the 26-year-old Gee will bring some youth to the squad, though the second-year professional is anything but inexperienced.

After four second-place stage finishes in his debut at the Giro d’Italia in 2023, Gee has had a strong 2024, which has included a stage win at the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné , where he finished third overall behind Primoz Roglic and Matteo Jorgenson.

Gee, a two-time Canadian national champion in the individual time trial, will look to find similar success in his debut at the Tour de France. His early success as a professional already has him inked to the Israel-Premier Tech team through 2028.

2024 Tour de France

In all, the 111th edition of the Tour de France this year will include up to 176 riders (representing 22 teams of eight) with their sights set on the yellow jersey, which has gone to Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard two consecutive times (2022 and 2023). The prior two races were won by Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar (2020, 2021).

LCL rides in yellow through 2028

Long-standing Tour de France partner since 1981 and Yellow Jersey sponsor since 1987, LCL renews its commitment for the following five editions of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

In addition to its partnership with the Tours de France, LCL is associated with the following French cycling events organised by A.S.O., both professional and amateur: Paris-Nice, Paris-Roubaix, Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, Paris-Roubaix Challenge, Critérium du Dauphiné, l'Étape du Tour de France and Paris-Tours.

longo (jeannie) roche (stephen)

The story began in Nice, where the Grand Départ of a Tour de France, once again dominated by Bernard Hinault, was held in 1981. At that time, Crédit Lyonnais was making its first appearance as a partner of the Grande Boucle . After joining the adventure, the French bank was called upon to play an even more visible role by associating itself with the Yellow Jersey from 1987 for an edition that also marked the history of the event with a peloton assembled in Berlin for the start that was the most distant from France at the time. At the finish of stage one, it was the first time a Polish rider, Lech Piasecki, took control of the general classification. Three weeks later, the final Yellow Jersey headed to Ireland thanks to Stephen Roche, who paraded down the Champs-Elysées in the company of Jeannie Longo, also decked out in yellow after her first victory in the women's Tour de France.

Since then, the Yellow Jersey has travelled around France on the shoulders of cyclists from almost every continent, with Asia still in the queue: Greg LeMond has most proudly represented North America with three victories, whilst the Colombians had to wait until 2019 for Egan Bernal to conquer the ultimate prize. Australia first enjoyed the honour of yellow with Phil Anderson and Robbie McEwen, among others, before Cadel Evans triumphed on the Champs-Elysées in 2011. Africa joined the Yellow Jersey club for two days in the summer of 2013 with Daryl Impey, and the European cycling scene continued to expand in the 21st century with British victories by Bradley Wiggins (2012), Chris Froome (2013-15-16-17) and Geraint Thomas (2018), Slovenian victories by Tadej Pogacar (2020-21) and Danish victories by Jonas Vingegaard (2022-23).

The most prized emblem on the cycling planet occupies a special place in the hearts of the riders, with English speakers nicknaming the little lion king who accompanies each Yellow Jersey presentation and whom they collect with care "Mufasa" for those who earn the privilege. The bond created with the cyclists is associated with an intimate relationship with the public, who are amazed by the exploits of the Yellow Jerseys and enthralled by the vehicles in the caravan. The XXL champion and the giant lion cub that leads the parade each day are also among the characters who count for millions of roadside spectators. It promises numerous encounters until July 2028, and why not even further?

In addition to its sporting partnership with A.S.O., LCL is also a partner to all cyclists by encouraging the use of bicycles on a daily basis, whatever the purpose. This commitment extends to actions for employees (sustainable mobility package for cycling to work, Gold-level Pro-Vélo Employer label for the Villejuif campus) as well as for customers and prospective customers (preferential-rate financing offers for the purchase of a bicycle).

Michel Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer of LCL : "Since the 1980s, LCL and the Tour de France have forged strong links based on trust, respect and listening. Cycling, the Yellow Jersey and the Tour de France are now part of the lives of LCL teams and their customers ... We are delighted to continue the adventure for another five years and to be, more than ever, the essential partner of all cyclists".

Yann Le Moënner, Chief Executive Officer of A.S.O. : "The word historic takes on its full meaning when you realise that this new agreement marks the fiftieth anniversary of the relationship between LCL and the Tour de France. This golden jubilee, as it were, is a rarity in the world of sport, and this joint adventure around the Yellow Jersey will therefore continue and be enriched by new challenges in the future for the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes with Zwift, in particular the shared desire to continue to develop an ambitious policy for cycling mobility. In this way, LCL, whose ambition is to support all forms of cycling, will be able to work alongside us on a number of initiatives aimed at young people and women, who are increasingly taking up cycling in the broadest sense of the term. As for the Yellow Jersey, a symbol of excellence, it will serve as a means of revealing the best players in a wide variety of fields.”

Meet the Americans competing at the 2024 Tour de France

A general classification win may be out of reach for the American riders in the Tour de France, but ending a three-year stage win drought is well within their grasp.

Sepp Kuss, 29, was the last American to win a stage when he took Stage 15 of the 2021 Tour de France. The Durango, Colorado native is the best rider the country has seen in a decade. Last year, Kuss finished as the top American in 12th place at the Tour de France and won the 2023 Vuelta a España to become the first American Grand Tour winner since Chris Horner won the same race in 2013. However, although slated to be Jonas Vingegaard’s top support rider for the 2024 Tour de France, Kuss withdrew from this year’s edition after testing positive for COVID-19 in the lead-up to the race.

Greg LeMond remains the only American to have ever won the general classification category at the Tour de France, accomplishing the feat in 1986, 1989 and 1990. American Lance Armstrong won the Tour from 1999-2005 but was subsequently stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping by the International Cycling Union in 2012 .

So, who is left in this year's race to give the United States a shot at glory — at least for one stage. Here's a look at the three Americans competing at the 2024 Tour de France.

Matteo Jorgenson (UCI WorldTeam Visma-Lease a Bike)

Jorgenson, 25, is having a breakthrough season with an overall victory at Paris-Nice 2024 and a second-place finish at the 2024 Criterium du Dauphine.

Jorgenson is a strong contender in this year's race for the white jersey, which recognizes the best young rider under 26. A versatile rider, Jorgenson — alongside Kuss — is poised to be USA's best hope for a future Tour de France general classification winner. But for now, he will take over from Kuss to play the chief support role for teammate Jonas Vingegaard, who won the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France.

This year will be Jorgenson’s third Tour de France. The Idaho-raised cyclist finished 20th in the general classification standings in 2022 and had to withdraw in 2023 due to injuries sustained in a crash along the route.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)

A standout mountain biker during his young adulthood in California, 27-year-old Powless transitioned to the road and turned professional in 2018.

Powless made history in 2020 as the first Native American to compete in the Tour de France. Since then, he has continued to improve and is coming off his strongest season yet with overall victories at the 2023 Grand Prix La Marseillaise and Étoile de Bessèges.

In Kuss’ absence, Powless is the top American prospect for pulling off a stage win as he is known for his success with breakaways and aptitude at climbing. Last year, Powless led the King of the Mountain classification for the first half of the Tour but was ultimately edged out by Italy’s Giulio Ciccone. This year, he’ll be looking to finally secure the polka-dotted jersey by the end of the Grand Boucle .

Hailing from Los Angeles, Quinn is a 24-year-old, up-and-coming cyclist riding in his first Tour de France to support Richard Carapaz, team leader of EF Education-EasyPost. Hot off a victory at the U.S. National Road Race Championships in May, Quinn is a strong all-around rider who excels at climbing and can produce strong sprinting kicks. Quinn will certainly be one to watch as he develops in the coming years.

Eight American pros to watch in 2024

When American Sepp Kuss (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) took home the red jersey at La Vuelta in 2023, he was met by parades in his hometown of Durango, Colorado and surprising praise from American actor Ben Stiller who had followed the entire La Vuelta, cheering Kuss on along the way.

Compatriot Veronica Ewers has risen to prominence in the past two years with a top 10 finish at the inaugural Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift after having spent most of her cycling career as an amateur.

We know there is talent in the legs and hearts of American riders. With the road season now upon us, here's who to follow in 2024. And who know? These riders may just spark an American cycling revival .

American cyclist Sepp Kuss won the Vuelta a Espana in 2023

Despite his team’s seeming unwillingness to let a domestique claim a grand classification victory, Sepp Kuss (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) ended up winning La Vuelta a Espana in 2023, much to the happiness of his hometown in Durango, Colorado and American cycling enthusiasts nationwide. Kuss’ win made him the first American in a decade to win a Grand Tour . As such, thousands came out to celebrate Kuss when he returned to the Mountain West to celebrate his La Vuelta victory.

Kuss also finsihed 12th overall in the 2023 Tour de France, where his strength on key climbing stages helped secure teammate Jonas Vingegaard’s win. After being in the top 10 overall for much of the Tour, a nasty crash in stage 20 bumped Kuss down to 12th, where he remained for the rest of the Tour.

Kuss is undoubtedly a talented rider with more grand classification wins in the realm of possibility. But knowing that Team Visma-Lease a Bike's focus is on Vingegaard, will he ever get another opportunity to go for the win like at La Vuelta? Time will tell.

Neilson Powless

Neilson Powless (ED-Education-EasyPost) in the Tour de France Polka Dot jersey

Neilson Powless (EF Education-Easypost) is now in his fifth year with EF Education-Easypost and arguably had his best year yet in 2023.

He started 2023 with a win at Grand Prix Cycliste de Marseille as well as the overall at Étoile de Bèsseges. He continued to impress at Dwars door Vlaanderen where he finished third and then rounded things out with a fifth place finish at the Tour of Flanders .

At the 2023 Tour de France, Powless wore the polka dot jersey for a whopping 13 days, becoming the first American to do so since 2017. Powless’ climbing prowess makes him sure to be a key player in this year’s Tour de France, whose route is notably hilly with five summit finishes.

Matteo Jorgenson

Americans in the pro peloton: Matteo Jorgenson

Another American known for his climbing skills, Idaho native Matteo Jorgenson (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) made his Tour de France debut in 2022 with Team Movistar, where he came dangerously close to winning stage 16.

In 2023, Jorgenson was poised to win the stage at Puy de Dôme , but ran out of gas with about 1km to go, ultimately finishing in fourth. Still, though, Jorgenson noted he was pleased with his effort and felt there was more effort to be given on another day.

This year will be Jorgenson’s first on Team Visma-Lease a Bike and he’s wasted no time getting acquainted with teammates like Wout van Aert, cruising around the Tour of Flanders route with van Aert in November.

Brandon McNulty

Americans in the pro peloton: Brandon McNulty

Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) is the current U.S. National time trial champion after finding the top step at the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships in 2023. And McNulty won by a good chunk of time, too - silver was nearly 90 seconds back. Also in 2023, McNulty won Stage 15 at the Giro d’Italia .

McNulty has started 2024 off with a bang, winning the Grand Classification at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in Spain. He has also been given the go-ahead by his team to go for more wins this season.

Veronica Ewers

Veronica Ewers of EF Education TIBCO-SVB

Another Idaho native, Veronica Ewers (Team EF Education-Cannondale) has had a meteoric -and unorthodox- rise to prominence in professional cycling.

She attended her first-ever group road ride in 2018 on a used Kona Jake the Snake cyclocross bike in tennis shoes. Despite her unassuming appearance, Ewers’ talent for cycling was undeniable, and by mid-2021, she stood atop the U.S. Pro Nationals podium with a bonze medal.

In 2022, Ewers finished ninth overall at the inaugural Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift , and many eyed her for another top 10 finish - if not higher - in 2023. Unfortunately, Ewers was unable to show her prowess fully at the 2023 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift when a race-ending crash in Stage 6 sidelined her.

This year, there will certainly be a focus on Ewers to see if she can find redemption at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift after the physical and emotional rollercoaster of dropping out last year.

Chloe Dygert

Americans in the pro peloton: Chloe Dygert

After two years of career-threatening injuries and illnesses, American cycling star  Choé Dygert  made one hell of a comeback in 2023.

The multi-discipline star won the  U.S. national time trial and road race  in dominant fashion before taking home two additional World Titles in Glasgow later that summer in the Individual Pursuit event on the track and in the time trial race on the road.

Heading into an Olympic year, Dygert is favored to win gold in the women’s time trial and individual pursuit, bringing back shades of when fellow and her former coach American Kristin Armstrong won three Olympic golds in the individual time trial in the early and mid-2000s.

Kristen Faulkner

Americans in the pro peloton: Kristen Faulkner

Kristen Faulkner (Team EF Education-Cannondale) is no stranger to stage wins, having racked them up at the Tour Féminin de l’Ardèche, the Ladies Tour of Norway, the Tour de Suisse and the Giro Donne.

A string contender in the race against the clock, Faulkner finished sixth in the individual time trial at the World Championships in 2022, and in 2023 became the Pan American TT champion, after covering the 20.1km course in 25:45.

Faulkner had a rollercoaster year in 2023, which saw her struggle with injury and make headlines with a disqualification at the March 2023 Strade Bianche after being caught wearing a continuous glucose monitor, whose use is banned in-competition by the UCI. As a result, Faulkner lost a podium spot in the race.

Faulkner is likely hungry to avenge her disqualification in 2024 for her new team, EF Education-Cannondale and will probably be just as hungry to not forget to remove her continuous glucose monitor before a race, too.

Coryn Labecki (née Rivera)

Americans in the pro peloton: Coryn Labecki

Coryn Labecki is the most veteran of the American women listed here, having spent nearly 20 years as a professional cyclist and earning the title of Olympian at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In 2023, Labecki won the U.S. National Criterium Championships (her 73rd national title, we might add), so you’ll find her sporting a stars-and-stripes edition of the EF Pro Cycling kit in any criterium until she’s unseated.

Always dangerous in a sprint, the five-foot-nothing "Pocket Rocket" is perhaps best known for winning the  Tour of Flanders in 2017 ,and remains the only American, male or female, to have done so.

After riding in service of Marianne Vos for the Jumbo-Visma team, Labecki signed on to join the newest American team, Jonathan Vaughters' EF Education-Cannondale .

Labecki knows the ins and outs of most races on the circuit - and that, along with her decades of experience makes her an incredibly valuable rider and teammate. Don’t sleep on Labecki for any sprint finish.

Pro cyclists from the U.S. are poised to make a splash in 2024 with the right team, tactics and, of course, a little bit of luck. We'll be rooting for our U.S.A compatriots as they bring the stars, stripes, polka dots and whatever else this year has in store.

The 4 Colombians that will participate in the 2024 Tour de France

Colombian cycling is ready to shine once again on the world stage of the 2024 Tour de France . Despite the absence of a legendary figure in Rigoberto Urán, the South American country has four riders of great quality to try to achieve stage victories or important general classifications.

1. Egan Bernal - INEOS Grenadiers .

Egan Bernal, winner of the Tour de France in 2019, returns as Carlos Rodriguez's super domestique/INEOS Grenadiers plan B in a powerful lineup for the British based team. With this being his fourth participation in the French Grand Tour, where he will seek to achieve again good sensations after having such a bad time in recent season, following the hard fall that almost cost him his life.

ANALYSIS | Who reads will think will win 2024 Tour de France; What GC result will Pogacar, Vingegaard, Roglic, Evenepoel, Picock and more achieve

2. Santiago Buitrago - Bahrain Victorious

For Santiago Buitrago of the Bahrain - Victorious team, the 2024 Tour de France will mark his debut in this prestigious race. The young Colombian is a promising young rider with the potential to aspire to a place in the top 10 of the general classification and, above all, to try to get a victory in a high mountain stage.

3. Fernando Gaviria - Movistar Team .

Fernando Gaviria was surprisingly confirmed by Movistar Team to race his second edition of the Tour de France. Despite having competed in the Giro d'Italia, the rider from La Ceja will bring his power in the sprints for the Spanish team trying to get UCI points although it will be very difficult to win due to the tough competition of riders like Jasper Philipsen and Mark Cavendish among other sprinters.

4. Harold Tejada - Astana Qazaqstan Team .

Astana Qazaqstan Team's Harold Tejada will face his third Tour de France with the goal of excelling in the mountains and scoring a significant victory for his team. With his previous experience in the race and his ability to respond on demanding terrain, Tejada will be looking to make a positive mark on the mountainous days.

Andrew Das

By Andrew Das James Hill and Chang W. Lee

Reporting from Paris

They rode out of Paris in the morning, glided past plowed fields and under tall trees and then returned to the capital in the afternoon. That was where the Olympics’ road cycling races were always going to be decided: after the riders ascended the cobblestoned streets of Monnmartre, after they held their nerve on the way back down, after a last dash to the finish in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

The two races had been the rarest of treats in these Olympics: free to all . And so buoyed by sunny skies and the chance to see elite cycling in a year when the Tour de France was forced to detour around Paris, citizens and visitors alike turned out for a glimpse.

Remco Evenepoel of Belgium was fastest in the men’s race, adding a second gold to the one he won in the time trial a week ago, and to his third-place finish in the Tour de France a week before that. Evenepoel may be tired of cycling. He is not tired of winning. “I achieved everything I wanted to achieve this month,” he said.

The American Kristen Faulkner won gold in the shorter women’s race on Sunday, pulling away from three rivals with a late sprint that left them regretting their decision not to go with her, and Faulkner wondering just what she’d done. “I’m still looking at that finish line sign wondering how my name got there,” she said.

Tour de France

Cheng ji’s bringing up the rear, but he’s front and center as first chinese to start the tour, cheng ji started his athletic career as a runner, moved into cycling, and since has become the first chinese to start all three grand tours.

GÉRARDMER, France (VN) — Cheng Ji (Giant-Shimano) may sit second from last in the general classification, but he has already made history by becoming the first rider from China to compete in the Tour de France.

“Like I say, it doesn’t matter in sport where you’re from, what matters is what you want to be and what you believe,” Ji said. “It’s very simple, just try and change your way.”

Ji comes from Harbin, which counts 6.7 million inhabitants and sits in the country’s far northeast, near Russia. Known as Ice City, Harbin grows so cold in the winter that locals cut ice from the river and build small villages, stringing lights throughout and creating a magical environment.

Ji kept warm as a 500- and 800-meter runner until he discovered cycling. He rode first on the track and then moved outdoors during the warmer months.

“I jumped on a bike, but I wasn’t really good. I was too skinny, about 53 or 54kg [117lb], without any muscle,” said Ji. “In the beginning, it was really hard.”

He progressed and made the bridge from China to Europe. He joined Giant-Shimano in 2007, then called Skil-Shimano, remaining with the mostly Asian and Dutch squad as it grew to become a first-division team.

In 2012, he became the first Chinese cyclist to race the Vuelta a España and helped John Degenkolb win five stages. He was so strong in that Vuelta, they started to call him the “Breakaway Killer.”

“The first time I heard the name, it was funny,” Ji said. “I did my job well in the Vuelta and the journalists invented this name. I said, ‘It’s funny, I like it.'”

Last year, Ji became China’s first participant in the 2013 Giro d’Italia. He only stuck around to stage 5, but that was enough to lend Degenkolb a hand for the Matera stage win.

Now, he has gone three for three in the grand tours with a start in the Tour de France.

“He can still become stronger, become more focused,” said sports director Marc Reef. “Like on the first day of the Tour, he eased off one minute at the top of a climb and lost his place. You can’t do that in the Tour.”

Still Ji has helped Marcel Kittel win three stages this year. And he has already had an effect on the race and his country.

“It’s big for Giant, big for Shimano, big for the Tour, and big for everyone else,” said Reef. “His Vuelta and Giro ride made an incredible impact on China. You can just imagine what the Tour is doing. He’s getting a lot of attention while growing into the ambassador role.”

This year, seven Chinese journalists are covering the Tour de France. At home, fans can watch live coverage for two hours every day for the first time. When they’re not watching, they are logging on to Ji’s Weibo account , China’s equivalent to Twitter, and leaving around 300 messages of support daily.

“Cycling’s become more popular in China now. When I go back for holiday, I see more people on their bikes, but that’s not just because of me, it’s just the gradual interest in sport and their desire to have fun in their free time,” Ji said.

“We’ve won three times so far in the Tour. I’m going to help the team win more, that’s my big goal. My personal aim is just to finish the race.”

The riders from Australia and New Zealand flying the flag at the 2024 Tour de France Femmes

From Niamh Fisher-Black, who will be backing the defending champion, to Grace Brown's last stand and Sarah Gigante's debut

Grace Brown (FDJ-Suez), Kim Cadzow (EF-Oatly-Cannondale), Niamh Fisher-Black (SD Worx-Protime) and Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal)

New Zealand

The men's Tour de France is over, the Olympic Games are wrapping up but this is no time to turn off the spotlight, as the stage is set for another enthralling battle at the Tour de France Femmes .

The third edition of the race starts in the Netherlands on Monday, August 8, before working its way back toward the Alps and a crucial final two days in the mountain, with Alpe d'Huez the crowning glory. Defending champion Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) may be the outright favourite, but there are plenty of others that are set to play a significant role – including a contingent of 13 riders from Australia and New Zealand. Some of those will be chasing their chances for stage victories, and perhaps giving one of the nations its first Tour de France Femmes stage victor, while others will be dedicated to helping their teammates. Either way – whether they are lining up for their first or last Tour de France Femmes – the strong group of riders from Australia and New Zealand will not go unnoticed as the peloton weaves its way across the 946km course from Rotterdam to the top of Alpe d'Huez.

Cyclingnews takes a closer look at the nine riders from Australia and four from New Zealand expected to – based on the preliminary start list – line up at the race that draws the eyes of the cycling world from August 12-18.

Grace Brown (FDJ-SUEZ)

CLERMONTFERRAND FRANCE JULY 23 Grace Brown of Australia and Team FDJ SUEZ meets the media press at start prior to the 2nd Tour de France Femmes 2023 Stage 1a 1234km stage from ClermontFerrand to ClermontFerrand UCIWWT on July 23 2023 in ClermontFerrand France Photo by Alex BroadwayGetty Images

A few months ago the Australian announced her plans to retire at the end of this season with the closing remark of ‘let’s see if I can sign off in style’. No matter what comes next as Grace Brown lines up for her third Tour de France Femmes, the gold medal hanging around her neck after the time trial at the Olympic Games means she has delivered in spades. Still, even though the final months of her career are quickly counting down and the pinnacle she has already reached is lofty, there is still much riding on this final Grand Tour with there being no question about just how important the race is to her French-based squad. The stage 3 time trial probably offers her the best opportunity to give her FDJ–SUEZ team the stage victory it is pursuing at the Tour de France Femmes, though stage 4 could also be an opportunity as the road to Liège has been kind to Brown this year, with the 32-year-old winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège in May. Her role, beyond that, is likely to be in support as FDJ-SUEZ has two strong options for the mountains and overall, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig – who has had a few hurdles with injury this season – and Évita Muzic. Helping a French team to success at the Tour de France, regardless of whether that is through earning top stage results herself or helping out in the GC charge, will win her plenty of wholehearted cheers from the local fans on the roadside as she waves goodbye.

Neve Bradbury (Canyon-SRAM)

BLOCKHAUS ITALY JULY 13 Neve Bradbury of Australia and Team CanyonSRAM Racing celebrates at finish line as stage winner during the 35th Giro dItalia Women 2024 Stage 7 a 120km stage from Lanciano to Blockhaus 1654m UCIWWT on July 13 2024 in Blockhaus Italy Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

It may be the first time Neve Bradbury has lined up at the Tour de France Femmes, but she is doing so with some serious results behind her. Blockhaus was a stage of the Giro d’Italia Women that stood out as soon as the route was announced as delivering one of the most challenging climbing stages the Women’s WorldTour had seen – and Bradbury won it. When Cyclingnews spoke to her before that impressive Giro stage win Bradbury said "when it's quite hard, quite late, everyone's tired – that's usually what would suit me quite well."

The same scenario she described as suiting her at the Giro – of hard stages late – applies just as much with the dual mountain stage finale of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes, which concludes at the top of Alpe d’Huez. Still, her role at the race is different from that at the Giro, where she was a leader and finished third overall. Teammate Kasia Niewiadoma has clearly earned the whole-hearted support of her squad by finishing third at the French Grand Tour in the last two editions, so Bradbury’s focus will likely be to bury herself for her team leader when the terrain hits the mountains and perhaps, at the same time, gather the experience that may one day help her be that leader at the biggest race on the calendar. Although if things don't go to plan for Niewiadoma, she could also be a handy plan B this time around.

Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Amber Pate (Liv-AlUla-Jayco)

The Australian champion Ruby Roseman-Gannon and her teammate Amber Pate will be lining up for the nation's only Women's WorldTour squad. Both will be taking on their second edition, with Pate lining up in 2023 while Roseman-Gannon made her debut in 2022, her first year as a professional. Roseman-Gannon has amassed plenty of experience since and has certainly built up her results through this season, claiming the national criterium and road race title at the start and then also picking up her first Women's WorldTour stage win along the way at the Tour of Britain. She'll be chasing another at the Tour de France Femmes “When I did the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, it certainly felt like the biggest race I’ve ever done, just due to the number of spectators and media interest," said Roseman Gannon in the team's pre-race media release. "It was a really incredible atmosphere and I’m excited to come back this year with two more years of training and experience."

In her pursuit of stage wins, Pate will be a strong ally, just as she was when the Australian Champion claimed the rest of her three victories so far this year.

Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek)

CHAMPAGNE SWITZERLAND JUNE 17 Amanda Spratt of Australia and Team LidlTrek crosses the finish line during the 4th Tour de Suisse Women 2024 Stage 3 a 1256km stage from Vevey to Champagne UCIWWT on June 17 2024 in Champagne Switzerland Photo by Tim de WaeleGetty Images

The experience of Amanda Spratt is a valuable asset in a Grand Tour with the rider who has twice finished on the overall podium of the Giro d'Italia Women lining up as a powerful support rider on the climbs for one of the strongest teams going up against defending champions SD Worx-Protime. The 36-year-old finished in the top ten overall last year, when she had to take up the mantle after GC hope Elisa Longo Borghini had to leave the race right before the crucial stage ending on the Col du Tourmalet. This time, too, the Italian has had to change her race plans, but before the start after a pre-race training crash, though there are others that are expected to lead the team charge this time. Longo Borghini – who took the maglia rosa at the Giro d'Italia – had timed her peak to begin in Italy and given that was always going to be hard to maintain through the Olympic Games and onto the Tour de France Femmes so other options were in focus. The small amount of time trialling and two final mountain stages with summit finishes could play into the hands of capable climber Gaia Realini and Shirin van Anrooij is also another GC option, one who doesn't have quite the same climbing record but has the characteristics to potentially carve out an advantage through the opening stages. The climbing strength of Spratt could be a valuable piece of the puzzle that helps wear down rivals and conserve the strength of her teammates for those crucial moments.

Sarah Roy and Josie Talbot (Cofidis)

Sarah Roy will be lining up for her second Tour de France Femmes with the French team and so will Josie Talbot. The Australian pair’s best chances for a top result come on the punchy terrain of stage four and stage five. Both are showing solid form to make the most of the opportunities that may crop up. Roy, the 2021 Australian road champion, this season took her first victory since claiming the national title, winning stage 2 of the 2.1 ranked Bretagne Ladies Tour.

Talbot has been raising the bar in her second season with Cofidis, taking victories at La Périgord Ladies and on stage 3 of the Tour Féminin International des Pyrénées. The rider will be hoping to keep up the strong run as she heads toward a new team, Liv-AlUla-Jayco, next year.

Sarah Gigante and Anya Louw (AG Insurance-Soudal)

Even before the rebirth of the women's Tour de France was confirmed, the excitement at the potential for it to be introduced was clear when Cyclingnews spoke to Sarah Gigante about the prospect . Back in 2021 when the then 20-year-old was in the extremely early stages of her professional racing career, it seemed clear that this was an event where the potential for her to make a mark on the race in the future was clear as this was a rider that embraced big challenges, long tough climbs and could deliver a solid time trial as well. The Melbourne-based rider, however, hasn't yet had a chance to line up at the event, but that is set to change.

Gigante is set to make her debut in the third edition of the race, beginning to gather experience in the French Grand Tour with AG Insurance-Soudal. It should be another massive step in what is her fifth year as a professional but, given a horrible run with interruptions, is her first solid European season. 2024 started with the dream win at the women's Santos Tour Down Under, with the overall and stage victory clinched with a spine-tingling run up Willunga HIll, and has continued with solid results. As she returns to racing, after having not pinned a number on since the end of June, no matter the results lining up at the Tour de France Femmes will be another dream realised. Experience is likely to be the big target in this edition, but who knows in the years to come.

Anya Louw is also expected to join Gigante on the start line in 2024, having already taken on the event in 2022. The 23-year-old who came through the ranks with Gigante in Australia has proved an ever reliable teammate and is bound to fill that role again.

Niamh Fisher-Black (SD Worx-Protime)

LAQUILA ITALY JULY 14 Niamh FisherBlack of New Zealand and Team SD Worx Protime competes during the 35th Giro dItalia Women 2024 Stage 8 a 117km stage from Pescara to LAquila UCIWWT on July 14 2024 in LAquila Italy Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

The mountains of the Tour de France Femmes are finally calling for Niamh Fisher Black. The rider from New Zealand has long shown enormous climbing strength – finishing in the top ten overall at the last four editions of the Giro d'Italia Women –the likes of which in most teams would have seen her lining up at the French race long ago. Fisher Black, however, is racing for the world's top team, SD Worx-Protime, which always seems to have an endless array of options for just about any scenario. This time, however, the 23-year-old rider from New Zealand gets her chance to ride the Tour de France Femmes.

Fisher-Black may have had the option of chasing her own opportunities at the Giro in July, but there is no doubt about the focus of the team in August given that Demi Vollering heads the line up not just as defending champion but also the clear-cut favourite. Vollering has already sailed away to victory at La Vuelta Femenina, Itzulia Women, Vuelta a Burgos and at the Tour de Suisse this year and in the mountains it will be Fisher-Black she will be counting on to be a key ally.

Mikayla Harvey (UAE Team ADQ)

ABTWILL SWITZERLAND JUNE 18 Mikayla Harvey of New Zealand and UAE Team ADQ sprints during the 3rd Tour de Suisse Women 2023 Stage 2 a 257km individual time trial from St Gallen to Abtwil UCIWWT on June 18 2023 in Abtwil Switzerland Photo by Dario BelingheriGetty Images

It is a debut Tour de France Femmes for Mikayla Harvey, who should prove a handy all-rounder for UAE Team ADQ. The 25-year-old, who came fifth overall at the Giro d'Italia Women in 2020 and 6th overall at the UAE Tour Women in 2023, is expected to line up alongside Erica Magnaldi and Silvia Persico.

Magnaldi was last year 13th overall at the French Grand Tour and also came fifth overall at the Giro d'Italia Women while Persico has taken to the stage podium three times on stages of the Tour de France Femmes and finished fifth overall in 2022, with the race a real breakthrough for the rider who was then at Valcar-Travel & Service. As such, Harvey is likely to find herself in a support role much of the time particularly given it hasn't been a season where she has regularly been pushing to near the top of the results sheet.

Michaela Drummond (Arkea B&B Hotels)

WEVELGEM BELGIUM MARCH 24 Michaela Drummond of New Zealand and Team ArkeaBB Hotels competes during the 13rd GentWevelgem in Flanders Fields 2024 Womens Elite a 1712km one day race from Ieper to Wevelgem UCIWWT on March 24 2024 in Wevelgem Belgium Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

Michaela Drummond will be making her debut at the race with a French team, with the weight of the sprint expectations for the squad on her shoulders for the first two sprinter-friendly stages. It has been a strong season for the 26-year-old, with a win in the national championships criterium, at Région Pays de la Loire Tour Féminin and two stage victories at the Volta a Portugal Feminina in July.

Sill the rider from the Continental Team will be stepping into a whole new tier at the Tour de France Femmes, with Arkea B&B Hotels one of the wildcard entrants. The advantage of that, however, is that she will be free to fly under the radar as she chases whatever opportunities may come her way.

Kim Cadzow (EF-Oatly-Cannondale)

VALDESQUI COMUNIDAD DE MADRID MADRID SPAIN MAY 05 LR Kim Cadzow of New Zealand and Kristen Faulkner of The United States and Team EF EducationCannondale react after the 10th La Vuelta Femenina 2024 Stage 8 a 895km stage from Distrito Telefonica Madrid to Valdesqui Comunidad de Madrid 1860m UCIWWT on May 05 2024 in Valdesqui Comunidad De Madrid Madrid Spain Photo by Alex BroadwayGetty Images

Kim Cadzow is lining up for her first Tour de France Femmes with an EF Oatly-Cannondale squad that is bound to be aggressive in pursuit of stage wins. "My goal is to get stuck into the racing," said Cadzow in a team announcement. "I want to enjoy the experience and support the team as best as possible."

Cadzow will be lining up alongside several potential stage winners, including the two-time Paris Olympic gold medallist Kristen Faulkner, but with the year the rider from New Zealand has had, it would be no surprise if she was also given support to chase her own opportunities. This season so far an overall and stage win at the Trofeo Ponente in Rosa in March led into a sixth at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and a top ten overall at La Vuelta Femenina as ample evidence of just what potential the 22-year-old has to be a powerful force. She is also clearly coming into the race with some strong form, having taken seventh at the Olympic Games time trial. Update: Since publication, on the eve of the Tour de France Femmes, EF-Oatly-Cannondale put out an announcement on social media to say that Cadzow would have to withdraw as she tested positive for COVID-19.
