Boston Duck Tour boat crew rescues boy and father after fall into Charles River

By Neal Riley , Kristina Rex

Updated on: August 19, 2024 / 6:15 PM EDT / CBS Boston

CAMBRIDGE - A Boston Duck Tour boat  came to the rescue of a little boy and his father after a fall into the Charles River Monday morning.

Massachusetts State Police said the boy, who is under 2 years old, apparently squeezed through the railing and fell into the water behind the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge. The boy's father jumped in after him.

Duck Boat first on scene after fall into river

Photographer Dominic DeMasi was across the river and heard the mother's screams. "Extreme. Like she was upset. You could tell," DeMasi said. "And then I saw the man jump in and I just knew that something was wrong, so I zoomed in on my camera."

Police and firefighters were called, but it was a Duck Boat that arrived on scene first. The amphibious vehicle that's famous for taking tourists to see Boston landmarks from land and water happened to be doing a routine rescue training drill nearby.

DeMasi's photos show the orange Duck Boat heading toward the father and child who were clinging to a stone wall. Two workers on the Duck Boat say they have never seen anything like this in their combined 20-plus years on the job.

"Just hold on to this kid"

Duck Boat operator and captain Michael Rosario said "the adrenaline was kicking in."

"This is crazy," he said. "It was happening while we were doing training. Now we're doing a real-life rescue."

"I was thinking, just hold on to this kid," narrator and captain Kevin O'Neill said. "Get them up onto the Duck safe."

duck-boat-rescue.jpg

As Rosario got the Duck Boat into position, O'Neill got the life ring out and down to the father and son, pulling them to safety. Rosario said the child was crying and cold, so they wrapped him in a blanket.

"He just said, thank you, thank you so much and he was effusively thankful, and we said of course, we are so glad that you guys are OK," O'Neill said.

"I have two daughters," Rosario said. "I just thought about if it was my child and I was stuck in there, I would be so happy if somebody came to rescue us."

The boy and his father are OK. As for Duck Boat rescuers Rosario and O'Neill, they went right back to work for a busy day of tours.

Duck boat rescues baby boy who fell into Charles River, dad who jumped in after him

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A Boston Duck Tours boat rescued a baby boy who fell into the Charles River in Cambridge and his father who jumped into the water to save him on Monday morning, officials said.

Troopers responding to a report of a child under the age of 2 in the river near the rear of Royal Sonesta Hotel around 9:30 a.m. learned the boy had fallen into the water after squeezing through a railing, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The boy’s father subsequently jumped into the river and secured him. They were then taken aboard a passing Duck Boat in the area of 40 Land Boulevard and dropped off at a nearby dock.

Mike Rosario, one of two Duck Tour operators on the boat, is credited with rescuing the baby and his father. Rosario and Kevin O’Neill were on a training run when they spotted the two in the water.

“Like if a child decides to lean over and God forbid they fall in, we have to jump into action right away,” said Rosario, who is known to patrons as Big Mike. “So we train for this all the time.”

Because it was a training run, only the two were aboard the Olga Ironsides for the safety drill. And then, suddenly, it wasn’t a drill at all.

“I was doing my loop and when I turned back around Kevin noticed a group of people waving to us,” Rosario said. “And then he noticed a man in the water and that’s when we realized somebody fell in.”

Rosario said the Dad was clinging to both the retaining wall and the child.

“So there’s like little slots in the rocks,” said Rosario. “So Dad was holding on there while he was holding the child.”

Duck boat rescue protocol actually calls for the vessel to initially move away from the person in the water, so as not to hurt them. Then a life-preserver ring is tossed over to help keep the person afloat. Finally, the duck boat is maneuvered into place to effect the rescue.

O’Neill manned the back of the duck boat, as Rosario gently backed it into a position a safe distance away from the Dad and son. Once in place, O’Neill lowered the ladder.

“And then I just walked down a few steps into the water,” he said -- close enough to take the baby from his Dad’s arm and bring him aboard.

“I was thinking, just hold on to this kid and totally concentrate on just getting him up on the duck boat safe,” O’Neill said. “And I was also saying, you’re okay, you’re okay. I don’t have any kids of my own and I’m not very good with babies, but because of the adrenaline I wasn’t thinking about any of that.”

The boy and his father were evaluated by EMS on shore after being pulled from the water. The boy was then taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

“He just said thank you, thank you so much,” O’Neill said. “And he was effusively thankful. We just said, of course. We’re so glad that you guys are okay.”

Video from the scene showed an Orange Duck Boat near a dock, as well as a state police cruiser and ambulances parked along the shore.

“So I looked over with my camera and I was able to zoom in and see there was actually a child in the water, a baby,” Demasi said. “And the father jumped in right afterwards.”

Photos shared with Boston 25 News showed first responders lowering a life preserver ring down to the father and his child.

A witness who didn’t want to appear on camera told Boston 25 News that the baby was likely between 11 and 15 months of age.

Local photographer Dominic Demasi said he heard screaming followed by people rushing over.

“Initially I thought it was a dog. I took my camera, I looked closer, and there happened to be a baby in the water, actually. The father jumped right in. He was swimming with the baby for five or 10 minutes. They then called a Duck Boat over,” Demasi recalled. “Everything happened so quickly. Everyone seemed to be safe, but it was scary.”

Charles River rescue (Dominic Demasi)

Demasi added that it was fortunate the water wasn’t cold when the baby plunged into the river.

“They come out of the Charles right here and they do their tours. So, they just happened to be in the area at the right time I guess. Right place, right time,” Demasi said. “It definitely scared me. I could hear them screaming...It’s good it wasn’t a long time. It wasn’t cold out.”

Both the child and father are okay, according to a Cambridge Fire Department spokesperson. Just a bit shaken up.

As for Rosario and O’Neill, by afternoon they were back aboard the Olga Ironsides, a full contingent of passengers in back after a day they won’t soon forget.

“Both are valued employees, even before this rescue,” said Cindy Brown, Boston Duck Tours CEO. “Mike and Kevin have been outstanding team members at Boston Duck Tours for many years. I’m thankful that the training they have received, along with very lucky timing, put them in a position to help save this father and child. I could not be prouder of their quick thinking and smart actions.”

A colorful row of Boston Duck Tours' Amphibious Vehicles are parked in the rain at the "Duck Stop" in front of the Prudential Center in Boston.

We took off from the “Duck stop” in front of the Prudential Center, making our way splendidly though flooded streets that had less amphibious vehicles stopped cold. As we inched around a stalled car, Major Groovy gave us the safety drill: life jackets and throw rings on the ceiling in case anyone decides to take a dive off the duck once we hit water.

Flooded streets and a row of closed-up movie trailers on a rainy day Boston Duck Tour in Boston, MA

Major Groovy’s monologue kept us entertained with current statistics and historical facts and anecdotes as we made our way around Beantown’s major tourist attractions. He introduced us to the Suffolk County Jail, known as the “glamour slammer,” on our way to the river ramp.

Amphibious vehicles drive into the Charles River on a rainy day Duck Tour in Boston, MA

Our guide narrated our way into the water: “Throw the Duck in neutral…propeller on…wheels off…big splash coming up…we’re afloat!” Our little crowd cheered.

A rainy day Boston Duck Tour on the Charles River in Boston, MA

A traffic accident on our planned route sent us on a detour through Newbury Street, Boston’s version of Rodeo Drive. Major Groovy quizzed us occasionally along the way to see if we had been listening. How many Dunkin Donut shops are there in Boston proper? Who is buried at the Granary Cemetery? How much is Boston’s Big Dig highway construction project costing taxpayers? Who won the battle at Bunker Hill? Which is the oldest tavern in the country? I’m not telling. You’ll have to take a Duck Tour and ask Major Groovy.

Crime & Public Safety

Crime & public safety | boston duck tours boat credited with rescuing child and adult from charles river.

The Cambridge Fire Department responded to the Charles River on Monday. (Cambridge Fire map)

Early Monday, a boy under the age of 2 managed to squeeze between the railing behind the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge and tumble into the Charles below, Massachusetts State Police stated. His father reportedly jumped in after him.

Photos, credited to local photographer Dominic Demasi, show the father clinging to rocks on the side of the river with one arm, while holding his child up with the other.

Two captains on a Duck Boat — one of the many noted Boston tour vehicles that take visitors through the city on the land and in the river — spotted the pair there while in the Charles on a quarterly safety drill.

“This is crazy,” Duck Boat Captain Michael Rosario recounted to reporters Monday. “This is happening while we’re doing training. Now we’re doing real-life rescue.”

Rosario told NBC 10 he and other captain Kevin O’Neil got to work and tossed a ring to the pair below, before maneuvering to lower a ladder and bringing them aboard. The captains, who said they were performing “man overboard training” just before, gave the father and son a blanket and brought them to waiting first responders on the shore.

The Cambridge Fire Department reported around 9:30 a.m. they responded to the river in the area of 40 Land Blvd. with Cambridge Police and State Police. The department said the child was brought to the hospital as a precaution.

“A child & adult have been rescued from the water by a @BostonDuckTours boat & are being EMS evaluated by Squad 3, Division 1, & @ProEMSCambridge PM 1,” Cambridge Fire posted .

Director of marketing for Boston Duck Tours Tom Vigna told reporters the team was “happy to be in the right place at the right time.”

Travel Tips for Boston Duck Tours

When to go, how to save on Boston's must-do sightseeing tour

boston duck tours rain

TripSavvy / Violet Smirnova

More often than not, when family or out-of-town guests visit Boston , they all have the same to-do item on their list: a Duck Tour. And the request ranges across all ages – Baby Boomer relatives, friends who are busy executives, artsy friends, friends who are parents to kids of all ages. While this is an activity that many locals don't even experience until they have a friend or relative visiting from out of town, it's one you won't want to miss as a tourist.

Duck Tours are a unique experience that combines sightseeing and history while also getting to go out on the Charles River in the vehicle you just drove around the city in. If you want to see Boston via a Duck Boat , late-spring through early-fall is the perfect time to do so. They run from late March through late November, though peak season for all things related to tourism in the city is certainly during the summer months when the weather is nice and warm. Before you book your spot, follow these tips for making the most of your Boston Duck Tour.

Where to Pick Up

You've no doubt seen the Duck Boats' ubiquitous amphibious vehicles all around Boston, but there are only three places where you can pick them up for a tour: the Museum of Science , the New England Aquarium , and the Prudential Center . Choose the one that's most convenient for your own home base and/or sightseeing itinerary; all are near major tourist attractions, MBTA stations and dining.

How to Save

Are your fellow Duck Boat riders a bunch of early risers? If so, make an online reservation for the 9 or 9:30 a.m. tours from either the Museum of Science or Prudential stops and get an Early Duck discount. (Remember that online-only stipulation: If you show up in person to buy tickets for the early tours, you won't get the discount.) It's also worth noting that only a portion of tickets are released online, so it's still worth checking one of the ticket booths if tickets for the date you want to go are sold out online.

There's also the Ride & Save program for those also planning to visit the Museum of Science and New England Aquarium: Show your Duck Boats ticket and get discounts off the museums' admission, café, gift shop, and theaters. You can also get a free tour of Harvard Square with your Duck Boats ticket, plus numerous discounts at the Prudential Center and other Boston restaurants and gift shops. So save that ticket stub and put it to work – you can save quite a lot!

How to Dress

Duck Boats tour in rain or shine, and they do drive in to the river (although, truth be told, the splash is pretty minimal). Wear layers – it can be breezy out on the water, and if it's rainy, a light raincoat is always a good idea. The Duck Boats are heated and have weather protection, but it's not quite like being enclosed within a typical car or truck, so plan accordingly.

What You'll See

Once on board, the tour is about 80 minutes and guests stay on board the entire duration. Approximately 20 minutes of that is spent on the water, with an hour on land taking in many of Boston's historic landmarks and neighborhoods. What you see will depend on where you pick up your Duck Boat, but popular sites include the Boston Public Garden , Boston Common , Boston Public Library, Newbury Street, Quincy Market and the TD Garden . It's destinations like these that make Boston the great city it is.
