Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available as an audiobook here .

1968 Tour Quick Facts:

4,684.8 km ridden at an average speed of 34.894 km/hr.

There were 110 starters and 63 classified finishers.

This was the last year the Tour was run on a national team format.

By the final stage, an individual time trial, the top 7 riders were within 2 minutes of each other.

Jan Janssen won the stage and the Tour on that final day and became the winner without ever having won the Yellow Jersey during the race.

This was the last edition of the Tour de France in which the competitors raced on national teams. From 1969 on, riders competed on trade teams.

Tour De France 1968

  • Sports 2020

It's a race that can be over 2000 miles, takes a better portion of a month, stretches from the Sea to the Alps throughout Europe, and is the largest bicycle race in the world. Beginning as a publicity stunt for a newspaper in 1903, it has continued annually stopping only for the two world wars that crossed its course and has grown into the herculean drama that is the Tour De France. 1968 winner of the Tour De France was Jan Janssen.

Condition is fair with some wear, writing, minor soiling and old tape in each of the four corners of the sheet. Image size 29.25 x 21.5.
