Half-Day Private Custom Willamette Valley Winemaker Tour

$175 per person or $350 single individual half day tour. Hosted by Pioneering Winemaker Carmine Campione.

You’ll be picked up at 10 am and transported to 3-4 vineyards with tasting rooms in one of the Willamette Valley’s best viticulture areas: Eola-Amity, Dundee Hills, Yamhill Carlton, or Ribbon Ridge, Chehelem Mountains or McMinnville. Your choice of area or leave the choice to us! A wine country picnic lunch will be provided mid-way through your tour. Tours generally last 8+ hours and include pick-up and drop-off at your location.

Carmine’s tour was a great experience. What can we expect on our tour?

Willamette Valley Wine Tour

We will tour 3 select wineries between the hours of 10 am-5 pm. We like to arrange a lunch pairing on your second vineyards stop or incorporate a separate lunch stop when feasible. Each stop is about 90 minutes, tasting fees range from $20-$40/per tasting and waived with about a 2 bottle purchase. Plan on being picked up at 10am and dropped off around 5pm. Joinable tours have less customization but still visit the same great vineyards, and private bookings have greater flexibility and have unlimited customization within reason.

Waterfalls and Wine Tour Combo

The Columbia Gorge Waterfall and Wine Tour is an excellent way to see the states most visited attractions like Multnomah Falls, breathtaking scenery, multiple waterfalls, lunch in Hood River, with the added bonus of having a vineyard and or brewery stop all on one tour. The Columbia Gorge runs along the Columbia River which divides Oregon and Washington and was carved out by the Missoula floods about 15,000 years ago and its is on of the most stunning landscapes in the United States. This tour is ideal because of how much you see in one day without excessive driving.

Oregon Coast Tour

The rugged terrain, lush and green backdrops and soaring cliffs make the Oregon Coast a must see if you have never been. Expect about 1.5 hours to get there, at your request we can stop at one vineyards on the way there in the Willamette Valley before we hit the coastal mountain range. Once we are at the beach, we can explore cannon beach, the splendor of haystack rock then dine at a local seaside restaurant. After lunch we can check out Ecola State Park, Oswald state park, and the world-famous outlooks on the cliffs of Manzanita. This route is heavy in driving, about 4 hours in the van.

If the streets of a city were veins, then certainly the wine that courses through them must be its lifeblood. In the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the city of McMinnville pulses to the rhythm of a wine lover’s dream.  With over a dozen wine tasting rooms, we’ve crafted a list of the best McMinnville wineries to visit. 

For purposes of this list, we are exclusively talking about the wineries in DOWNTOWN McMinnville, specifically the tasting rooms on 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th streets. 

Unlike several articles out there, we are only bringing you the options that are walkable which makes for easier winery hopping!

We’ve been fortunate enough to visit Oregon 3 times over the last few years and we always make sure to stop in McMinnville when we visit.

As we stroll down McMinnville’s quaint streets, each turn reveals a new winery, each more inviting than the last. 

McMinnville, Oregon is a small city located in the heart of the Willamette Valley. The city was founded in 1856, during the height of the Oregon Trail migration, by William T. Newby and his wife, who named the town after their hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee.

In its early years, McMinnville was a bustling agricultural center, with farmers growing wheat, hops, and other crops in the fertile soil of the valley. The city also became an important center for the wine industry, with its location in the heart of the Willamette Valley making it an ideal spot for growing grapes.

The city’s downtown area is renowned for its well-preserved historic buildings that house a vibrant collection of boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and of course, its famed wine tasting rooms. 3 rd Street, the main thoroughfare, has been recognized as one of the “Great Places in America” for its distinctive, locally-owned shops and beautiful streetscape.

McMinnville is known for its thriving wine industry, with the downtown area serving as an urban gateway to the surrounding vineyards of the Willamette Valley. Numerous tasting rooms are dotted throughout the city, offering visitors the opportunity to sample locally-produced wines, particularly the region’s acclaimed Pinot Noir.

The city also hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year, including the International Pinot Noir Celebration and the UFO Festival, showcasing its diverse and quirky character.

How to Get to McMinnville, OR

Assuming you are flying into Portland, it’s about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive from the airport. You’ll want to rent a car as Willamette Valley is spread out across multiple AVAs. If you don’t want the hassle of driving, you can book a tour or driver in McMinnville.

Willamette Valley Vineyards is one of the largest wineries in the area and their main estate vineyard is in Turner, OR about 1 hour from McMinnville. They opened a wine tasting spot in downtown McMinnville on 3 rd Street. 

The winery was founded in 1983 by Jim Bernau, who had a vision of crafting world-class Pinot Noir wines in Oregon. Since its establishment, Willamette Valley Vineyards has become one of the leading wineries in the region producing well over 200,000 cases yearly. 

The winery specializes in Pinot Noir, the flagship grape of the region, which thrives in the cool climate and volcanic soils of the Willamette Valley. In addition to Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley Vineyards also produces other varietals such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and more. 

Willamette Valley Vineyards has received numerous accolades and awards for their wines, including recognition for their sustainable practices and contributions to the Oregon wine industry. 

R. Stuart & Co Tasting Room

• Hours: Daily from 12PM – 8PM
• Food Available: Yes
• Reservations Required: Yes for 6 or more people

R. Stuart Winery primarily focuses on Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, sparkling wines, and other intriguing varietals, crafting authentic and balanced wines that pair well with food.

In 2001, Rob and Maria Stuart fulfilled their dream of creating a winery that offers high-quality wines at affordable prices. They stay true to their winemaking style by thoughtfully crafting wines year after year from fruit sourced from various vineyards in the Willamette Valley. 

The Big Fire label offers approachable and everyday wines, while the Love, Oregon wines pay homage to the spirit of Oregonians. The Reserve and specialty wines, under the R. Stuart & Co. label, combine elements of Burgundian and New World winemaking.

Located in McMinnville, Oregon, the tasting room is conveniently situated blocks away on Historic 3 rd Street. 

While reservations aren’t required, their tasting room is a bit smaller so we’d suggest having some if you are visiting in peak season. 

Pike Road Wines

• Thursday & Friday: 12PM – 7PM
• Saturday: 11AM – 7PM
• Reservations Required: No, but encouraged

Founded in 2016, Pike Road Wines is a relative newcomer to the Willamette Valley wine scene. However, they have quickly established themselves as a producer of exceptional wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region.

Pike Road Winery takes its name from the actual road that runs alongside their vineyards, situated in the Oregon Coast Range Mountains. 

With a deep appreciation for great farming, Pike Road sources fruit from over 20 small family-owned vineyards across the northern Willamette Valley, encompassing six distinct sub-AVAs. 

With their belief in the exceptional potential of the region, they focus on crafting wines exclusively from the Northern Willamette Valley, specializing in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, reflecting the unique character of this remarkable winegrowing region.

We really enjoyed a bottle of Sparkler Rose with a build-your-own-cheese plate. 

Pinot Vista Tasting Lounge

• Sunday & Monday: 12PM – 5PM

Pinot Vista Tasting Lounge is a unique concept in the Willamette Valley wine scene. Located in downtown McMinnville, the lounge offers a curated selection of wines from some of the best wineries in the region.

Visitors can enjoy a flight of four wines, or choose from a variety of wines by the glass or bottle. The lounge also offers a small selection of food and snacks to accompany the wine.

Pinot Vista Vineyards is a family-owned estate in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, fulfilling the dream of owner Sherry Lewis and carried forward by the Washburn family. 

The vineyard’s premium location and nutrient-rich soil contribute to their award-winning Pinot Noir, complemented by a hazelnut orchard. 

Their tasting lounge, “The Lounge,” located in Downtown McMinnville, offers a welcoming and country-themed ambiance, featuring a wide selection of wines from Pinot Vista Vineyards and other esteemed wineries.

Chris drank a glass of their 2019 Sangiovese which he described as subtly bold. I enjoyed the 2020 Sparkling Pinot Noir Rose by Schone Tal Cellars which was dry and crispy. 

Terra Vina Wines Tasting Room

• Friday & Saturday: 12PM – 7PM
• Sunday: 12PM – 5PM

Terra Vina Wines , a small family-owned vineyard located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA on Parrett Mountain, produces delicious wines known for their full-bodied and opulent complexity. 

Their commitment to natural farming techniques and respect for the environment results in wines that showcase purity of flavor and balance. Unlike many other wineries in the area, Terra Vina focuses on big, bold reds and doesn’t actually offer a Pinot Noir, which is what the region is known for. 

They offer a range of wines, including Big Reds sourced from vineyards in Eastern Oregon and Washington, as well as the “La Famiglia” label featuring estate-grown fruit, including unique varietals like Dolcetto and Cabernet Franc. 

We personally love big, bold reds so if you need to refresh your palate with something other than a lighter Pinot Noir, this is definitely the spot for you. 

The Wineries we missed

While we did visit Troon Vineyards, we excluded them from this list as they are actually produced in the Rogue Valley AVA and not in the Willamette Valley AVA. If you do visit, they are known for more creative, funky wines and we personally prefer a more traditional style. 

We also wish we had more time (and liver stamina) to drink at all the McMinnville wineries, so we had to miss these this trip.

I’ve been wine-tasting all around the West Coast from Washington to California, so this was an exciting opportunity for me to experience some of Oregon’s best wineries. Known for their Pinot Noirs, Oregon’s Willamette Valley is a fantastic wine region in the US to taste in. Having tasted wines from different regions with varied characteristics, I can truly say that McMinnville in the Willamette Valley is a great place for wine tasting in Oregon. If you’re thinking about taking a trip to explore some of Oregon’s most beautiful wineries, consider stopping by McMinnville! You won’t be disappointed.

While Oregon is famously known for creating world-class Pinot Noir, Argyle brings a different style of wine to the Oregon wine scene: sparkling wine. We absolutely loved starting our day of tasting McMinnville Wine with the crisp sparkling wines at Argyle Winery in the Dundee Hills.

The tasting room is beautiful and spacious, with huge windows that let tons of light into the space. The staff is also incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, making the tasting experience even more enjoyable. Overall, Argyle is a must-stop for any wine enthusiast visiting McMinnville.

2. Maysara Winery

Maysara Winery in McMinnville, Oregon is a unique gem for travelers looking to experience wine tastings.

This family-owned and operated winery has a special story – owner and winemaker, Momtazi, an immigrant from Iran, and his daughter, Sara, are the first woman-owned and first immigrant-owned winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Maysara’s Pinot Noir grapes have won awards in international competitions and their warm hospitality makes guests feel at ease as they explore the beautiful stone building on the property.

From expertly paired food offerings to knowledgeable staff eager to discuss the nuances of their wines, this charming winery has something for everyone.

We aren’t supposed to pick favorites, but our tasting at Maysara in Oregon’s Willamette Valley definitely stuck with us in more ways than one.

3. Stoller Family Estate

If you’re after an eco-friendly wine-tasting experience, Stoller Family Estate Vineyard and Winery is where it’s at. Located in McMinnville, Oregon, Stoller is well-regarded for its sustainability initiatives, a crucial aspect of their winemaking process that reflects their commitment to preserving the environment.

The tasting room itself was constructed with a large portion of recycled materials and even the construction waste was recycled – showing their commitment to sustainability from the ground up.

They’re not just about great wine but also about being great stewards of the land from which that wine is made. Stoller Winery is even a certified B Corp .

But let’s talk about the experience. When you visit, you’re not just getting a wine tasting; you’re also in for a culinary treat. Stoller offers an assortment of delicious food and charcuterie boards to complement their award-winning wines perfectly.

And trust us, there’s nothing like sipping a glass of fine wine while snacking on some well-curated bites.

Next up on our McMinnville wineries adventure is a visit to the charming Brooks Wine . One thing we loved right off the bat about Brooks is their commitment to sustainability. Like Maysara, they’re Demeter Certified, meaning they practice biodynamic farming by nurturing the vines, the soil, and the ecosystem. This isn’t just cool, it’s essential for crafting top-tier wines.

Now, let’s talk about what you can expect when you visit. Unlike some places where wine is the only star of the show, Brooks offers a variety of food options to accompany their excellent wines. From delectable snacks and platters to full-on meals, there’s something to cater to all taste buds.

Even my husband was glad to see they had beer on the menu; after a full day of tasting wine around McMinnville he was ready for something different.

Personally, I had a fantastic time at Brooks Wine . The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was laid-back, and the views? Well, they were nothing short of stunning. You’re surrounded by vineyards and nature, making it a perfect spot to relax with a glass (or two) of some of the best McMinnville wines.

When you visit Youngberg Hill, be sure to try their award-winning Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Both offer a beautiful expression of the terroir and are perfect for pairing with local cuisine. The tasting room is open daily from 11 am to 4 pm, but reservations are required for groups of six or more.

A weekend guide to Oregon’s Willamette Valley

I f you’re still looking to plan a weekend excursion before summer ends, almost nowhere is more idyllic in late August in the U.S. than the Pacific Northwest. 

And while often in the shadow of California’s Napa and Sonoma wine regions, Oregon’s Willamette Valley has garnered more and more attention in recent years among wine lovers and tourists alike—deservedly so. 

Spanning approximately 150 miles, the Willamette Valley is home to more than 700 craft wineries, with a particular specialty for pinot noir. The region is also on the map for some of the best cheeses produced domestically, and fresh farm-to-table dining has long been the status quo in the restaurant scene here.

The Willamette Valley is approximately an hour drive from Portland International Airport. Within the area, McMinnville is the most perfect, charming town to serve as a base for exploring the region. While you would need to rent a car or book a car service to reach McMinnville, the town easy easily walkable once you're there, with numerous tasting rooms (for both beer and wine), restaurants, cafés, bakeries boutiques, bookstores, and more within walking distance from local hotels. From here you could also reach many wineries within a 30-minute drive, but you could also just stay in town and still have plenty to do.

Where to go

Penner-Ash Wine Cellars : Tucked away up the mountain through a slightly winding road that looks straight out of a storybook, this family-owned winery offers some of the best views of the entire Willamette Valley. (On a clear day, you could see Mt. Hood from one of the tasting room patios while sipping on a glass of chilled viognier.) Thanks to its prime location (and excellent selection of pinot noir and riesling, reservations are being booked up quickly, so make sure to plan in advance.

Gran Moraine Wines : If wine is your jam, then you should definitely try to visit at least a few wineries in the area. But if you’re going to prioritize one, then make it Gran Moraine. A jewel in the middle of the valley, the house has indoor and outdoor tasting rooms offering the most breathtaking views while you sip some of the best pinot noirs and chardonnays in the area. A few of the standouts on the wine list include the 2019 Zena Crown Vineyard Confier pinot noir and the 2020 Yamhill-Carlton chardonnay.

Durant Vineyards and Olive Mill : This spot has something for everyone. In case wine isn’t your jam, then olive oil tasting is a fun option that anyone can enjoy—and there’s no shortage of olive oils to taste at the olive oil bar, with infusions such as basil, rosemary, garlic, lemon, orange, and jalapeño. Of course, you can pair the olive oils with wine made on the estate, elevated above the valley for some panoramic views over the vineyards and olive oil trees. This is also a very pleasant spot for enjoying the afternoon in the estate gardens, or you can even opt to stay overnight in one of the private cottages.

Briar Rose Creamery : A must-visit for cheese lovers. Co-proprietor and cheesemaker Sarah Marcus got her start in the business in 2005 with another popular cheesemonger down the West Coast: Northern California's Cowgirl Creamery. Marcus soon fell in love with the process and all things cheese, and her employers encouraged her to get trained, which she did upon enrolling in a program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. From there, Marcus went on to work with cheesemakers in England, Spain, North Carolina, and Vermont, before returning the Pacific Northwest—specifically to Dundee, Oregon, where she and her husband and co-proprietor, Jim Hoffman, started Briar Rose more than a decade ago. The cheeses—sourced from the dairy of a certified organic herd of Ayrshire cows, a very rare breed on the West Coast—the cheeses are available at local farmers' markets in the area (also worth scouting out on the calendar) as well as the creamery farm store, which is a bit out of the way, uphill along a curvy, gravel road. But the fromage blanc, which you could eat straight with a spoon, is well worth the trip alone.

Willamette Valley Half Marathon : If you love to run, and you love wine, then this is the perfect event for you. There are several popular wine country marathons around the country, from Santa Barbara, Calif. to the Wineglass Marathon in upstate New York. Traditionally held every September or October, the Willamette Valley race offers some of the most bucolic landscapes imaginable, and between the sights and the local wine (after the race), there’s no shortage of inspiration to get to the finish line.

Where to eat

Crescent Café : An ideal spot to start with breakfast (or lunch), Crescent Café is your local, cozy café where all breads and pastries are made from scratch in-house daily. The menu rotates often, but it is sizable. You can dine inside or order online for pickup, which could be great if you want to bring your sandwich or salad to the local park down the street or out to the vineyards for a picnic on a sunny day.

Hayward : Located in the Mac Market food hall, this eatery has seen many iterations during and since the pandemic, from meal kits to pantry staples to food for takeaway. Now a fully fledged, standalone restaurant, Hayward is a purveyor of “new northwest” cuisine, essentially hyper seasonal and local, and menus change often accordingly. Current menus are available on the website, as well as plenty of information about the local farms from which Hayward sources its products. Recent menu items include udon pomodoro with ginger miso and pecorino cheese; braised hen dumplings with dashi, fermented mustards, and a peanut chili crisp; and sesame butter mochi with sweet black sesame and whey caramel.

Humble Spirit : If there was a restaurant that exuded “elevated humble” vibes, this would be it. Think simple dishes with local produce and game as well as a wine list that highlights some of the best examples of Willamette Valley bottles. And while the menu is elevated, the dress code and atmosphere are relatively casual, popular with tourists and locals alike. The place does attract a line out the door, so make sure to book reservations or come early.

Okta : Rare is the fine dining restaurant that offers a $300+ tasting menu but also doesn’t have a formal dress code. Yet that just speaks to the enjoyable laid-back attitude of the Willamette Valley, encouraging diners to simply enjoy themselves (and the food and wine) without any fuss or stress. Located at the base of the new Tributary Hotel on the main drag of McMinnville, Otka prides itself with a sustainable and inventive culinary program as part of Relais & Châteaux’s annual campaign around gastronomic sustainability, Food For Change . The restaurant’s produce comes directly from its own farm nearby. Otka was also recently a finalist for a James Beard Award.

Pizza Capo : The Neapolitan-style, wood-fired pizzas here are made-to-order, and the restaurant only sells as many pizzas as it has pizza dough made fresh each evening. So plan accordingly and come early. To-go orders are an option, but the dining room is first come, first serve.

Where to stay

Tributary Hotel : Opened in 2021, the hotel is a brand new member of the Relais & Châteaux association of luxury hotels and restaurants around the world. There are eight suites in total on the property, all of which are optimal for either short or long-term stays with spacious living areas and kitchenettes attached to the master bedroom. And while the building itself has a number of fixtures and design elements original to when it was first constructed in the early 20th century, there are numerous modern luxuries, from bluetooth speakers (on both the writing desk and in the bathroom) to Samsung TV Plus HDTVs (with live TV as well as Netflix and Hulu preloaded) to humidifiers and essential oil diffusers subtly uplifting the air quality in the suite. Breakfast is served individually in each suite, and it is essentially a feast of a tasting menu that is decided by the chef each morning (albeit still keeping a guest's dietary restrictions and allergies in mind).

The Boutique Hotel : The tiny home movement is continuing to gain momentum as home buyers are being forced to rethink (and rethink and rethink) ownership costs but also sustainability for the long-term. Tiny homes are also becoming an increasingly popular model for hotels, offering a novel option for lodging with more amenities while offering a cozy ambiance that you would more likely find at home rather than a hotel, without the strings of renting from a home-sharing service. The Boutique Hotel, located in a part of McMinnville that is being heavily remodeled and upgraded as more tourists visit the area, has nine custom cottages, each with curated furnishings and décor selected to compliment a distinct theme for each cottage, from glam to surf shack.
