Recent tour reviews

I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.

The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.

Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."

Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"

Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.

The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.

And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.

Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!

A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.

Coldplay's reported 10-night Wembley Stadium residency: everything you need to know

when is coldplay's final tour

Coldplay are reportedly planning to play a record-breaking 10-night stint at Wembley Stadium in London.

The British indie band would eclipse Michael Jackson’s historic 1988 Wembley residency if the plans materalise, although “nothing is set in stone”.

During his Bad World Tour in 1988, Jackson performed seven sold-out concerts from July 14 to July 16 and July 22 to July 26.

Coldplay , who headlined Glastonbury for the fifth time in June 2024 , reportedly want to surpass this to promote their upcoming album Moon Music.

“Coldplay want to do something super special for Moon Music and they have discussed the idea of doing a set residency rather than touring across the UK,” a source told the Sun.

Music of the Spheres tour

"Wembley has been mooted as a possible location which would work for a ten-date residency, for example. It means they would be able to play to almost a million fans.”

Coldplay last played Wembley Stadium during their continuing Music of the Spheres world tour on August 12 and 13, 2022.

Here is what we know about the reported Wembley residency.

When are Coldplay playing at Wembley Stadium?

There are no dates for this yet. However, with their new album due out this year — and based on previous album releases and tours — we could see Coldplay at Wembley at the end of 2025.

The band’s Music of Spheres tour began in 2022 and ends on November 16, 2024, in Auckland, New Zealand.

You can check out the remaining European dates here.

How much are tickets and when will they go on sale?

Given that there are no confirmed plans, no ticket details have been announced.

When can we expect to know more?

Fans may want to check their news feeds and the band’s official website here for news.

Why would they hold a tour in one place?

Coldplay are very conscious of their environmental footprint. They reportedly believe playing in one place instead of a traditional tour would reduce carbon emissions.

The Sun reported that the band revealed that in the first two years of their Music of Spheres tour, they achieved a 59 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared with their 2016-17 tour.

Band members — frontman  Chris Martin , Will Champion, Guy Berryman, and Jonny Buckland — reduced air travel, used sustainable materials for their stages, and implemented more efficient lighting.

They even created kinetic dance floors, allowing fans to generate electricity. The Sun’s source said: “On their last tour, the band went all out to try to reduce the impact of their work on the environment.

“By keeping the shows in one place, they are removing the need for HGVs to drive the stages and kit across the country, for example.”

What is Coldplay’s new album called and when is it out?

The band confirmed details of their 10th studio album in June 2024 . It’s called Moon Music and will be released in October 2024.

The news of the album came after the band released their latest hit feelslikeimfallinginlove in June.

Will this be Coldplay’s last album?

Martin has said that the band would stop making music in 2025.

“Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that, I think we will only tour,” he told BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley in 2021. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.”

SHOW POWERED BY 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY

PLEDGE TO CUT TOUR EMISSIONS BY 50%

ONE TREE PLANTED FOR EVERY TICKET SOLD

In 2019, Coldplay committed to making their future tours  as environmentally beneficial as possible , and today’s announcement is accompanied by a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives and environmental commitments.

Full details can be seen at  coldplay.com/sustainability , including commitments to:

  • power the show entirely by renewable, super-low emission energy – with solar installations at every venue, waste cooking oil, a kinetic stadium floor and kinetic bikes powered by fans. This power will be stored in the first ever mobile, rechargeable show battery (made from recyclable BMW i3 batteries).
  • draw down significantly more CO2 than the tour produces with a range of nature- and technology-based solutions, including planting one tree for every ticket sold.
  • provide each venue with a sustainability rider requesting best environmental practices.
  • encourage fans to use low carbon transport to and from shows via the official tour app built by SAP, rewarding those who do with a discount at venues.
  • ensure all merchandise is sustainably and ethically sourced.
  • offer free drinking water and strive to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue.
  • put 10% of all earnings into a fund for environmental and socially-conscious causes, including ClientEarth, One Tree Planted and The Ocean Cleanup.
  • establish a partnership with climate change experts at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment to quantify the impact of the tour – both positively and negatively – on the environment
  • together with Green Nation, Live Nation’s sustainability platform, Coldplay will be a special artist advisor, ensuring the sustainable practices developed on this tour are shared, adopted and scaled through the rest of the live touring industry.

Coldplay said:

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.

At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.

If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Chris Martin reveals end of 2025 will be Coldplay’s ‘last proper record’

Chris Martin has said that Coldplay will not make any more music as a band after 2025.

During a special BBC Radio 2 Christmas show with presenter Jo Whiley the rock group’s frontman shared the news that the band will release their last record in 2025 and plan to “only tour” after that.

Martin made the announcement during the show, which aired on Thursday evening.

Speaking to Whiley, Martin said: “Our last proper record will come out at the end of 2025.

“And I think after that we’ll only tour.

“And maybe we’ll do some sort of collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes there.”

“I’m being 100% serious I promise.

“It’s just what seems to feel right – it’s hard for me to say without sounding like an idiot but it just seems to be what I’m told. I can see it all up to there.”

Martin said the band would release three more musical projects, with the final album being a “back to basics” album titled Coldplay.

“It takes so much energy to make an album and we put everything into it and by that time I don’t know if we’ll be able to do that,” he said.

“I really like that some of my favourite artists have a catalogue that starts and finishes and that’s what feels right for us.”

He added that the band, which consists of frontman Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Phil Harvey, would continue to work and play together.

“It’ll be like being a professional sports player but still playing that sport,” he said.

Martin also opened up about Coldplay’s dynamics, telling Whiley there had been a “mutual respect” between the band mates over the past 10 years.

He said previously the other members had not felt they could confront him on creative decisions.

“I realised that I was often extremely difficult for the band to deal with because I can be quite headstrong about ‘the song should sound like this,'” he said.

“Around 2012-13… I started to listen more and that made me enjoy myself in the band a lot more and find it more collaborative.

“For the last 10 years or so there’s been such a mutual respect that has not been clouded by someone’s over-anxiety. Because that’s how I would be, I would be very anxious.

“I think it would drive them mad because it would cloud the friendship and cloud the creative stuff.

“(Now) it feels for me like a really safe space between those four people.”

Earlier this year, Coldplay released their ninth studio album, titled Music Of The Spheres, which went straight to number one in the UK album charts.

The band were also recently nominated for group of the year and best rock/alternative act for the 2022 Brit Awards.

The group released their first studio album Parachutes in 2000.

During their career, they have produced nine UK number one albums and won a plethora of awards, including nine Brit Awards and seven Grammy Awards.

The band’s upcoming Music Of The Spheres tour in 2022 will be powered with rechargeable batteries fuelled by renewable sources.

The tour will be supported by a “show battery”, supplied by BMW which will be recharged using solar power and generators powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil.

Fans will also be able to generate electricity for the concert through a kinetic stadium floor and power bikes.

The band’s ambition is to make their concerts more environmentally friendly and to have one of the greenest tours in history.

Chris Martin Says Coldplay Will Stop Making New Music in 2025

Portrait of Bethy Squires

Chris Martin said that Coldplay will complete its great works by 2025. Speaking to BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley (reported by NME ), Martin said that the final Coldplay album will drop in 2025. After that? A decades-long victory tour. “Well, I know I can tell you, our last proper record will come out in 2025, and after that, I think we will only tour,” he said. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.” Speaking to NME earlier this year, Martin said that the plan was always for Coldplay to make 12 albums. “It’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it, and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense, too,” he said. “I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing.’” In 2021, Coldplay released album 9 of 12, Music of the Spheres, with the Billboard- chart-topping “My Universe” collab with BTS.

Chris Martin Says Coldplay Will Release Their Final Music in 2025

"Our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour,” Chris Martin told the BBC

It looks to be the end of an era for Coldplay in the next few years.

Chris Martin , the band's frontman, revealed in the teaser for an upcoming interview with Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2 that the group's intention is to wrap up making new music by 2025.

"Well I know I can tell you, our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour," the 44-year-old said during the interview, which drops in full on Thursday.

"Maybe we'll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalog, as it were, finishes then," he added.

The band's first album Parachutes dropped in 2000, making them instant stars thanks to hit single "Yellow."

In the interim, Coldplay has enjoyed a stellar career with multiple platinum-selling albums, racking up 30 Grammy nominations and seven statuettes in the process.

Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres Tour” Becomes First Rock Tour (and Second Tour Ever) to Gross $1 Billion

The post Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres Tour” Becomes First Rock Tour (and Second Tour Ever) to Gross $1 Billion appeared first on Consequence .

Coldplay’ s long-running “Music of the Spheres Tour” just keeps breaking records. After the band’s multi-continent trek surpassed Elton John to become the highest-grossing rock tour in music history, it’s now the first rock tour — and second tour ever (obviously behind Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour”) — to gross over $1 billion dollars.

Billboard confirmed the new accolade after analyzing July “Boxscore” data, which calculates the top-grossing tours of each month. According to the data, Coldplay brought in $72.2 million and sold 575,000 tickets across 11 shows in July, leading to the fourth time Coldplay has topped the Boxscore charts and enabling the band to surpass the $1 billion grossing mark.

Since beginning in 2022, Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres World Tour” hasn’t just broken the $1 billion grossing threshold — it’s sold nearly 9.3 million tickets through August 25th. With 15 dates left on the tour this year and a typical average of 50,000 tickets sold for each night, Billboard estimates that Coldplay’s tour will surpass 10 million tickets sold.

They’d become the first group to achieve such an accolade, and the first act of any kind — if not for Taylor Swift. Her ongoing “The Eras Tour” hasn’t reported the exact figures yet, but Billboard estimates she’s approaching the $2 billion grossing mark, and will inevitably reach the 10 million tickets accolade as well.

Coldplay have four shows left on the European leg of their “Music of the Spheres Tour,” which kick off tonight in Dublin. They’ll then head over to Australia and New Zealand for the tour’s final leg in October. You can help Coldplay feel like maybe, just maybe, they’ll have a chance at beating out Taylor Swift for the highest grossing tour of all time by getting tickets here .

Meanwhile, a new era is just beginning for Coldplay: They’ve got a new album, Moon Music , coming out on October 4th. Perhaps the ensuing tour they’ll embark on for that album will be even more lucrative — or, Taylor Swift will somehow string together yet another enormous tour to retain the top spot (given her track record , we wouldn’t put it past her).

Elton John

Coldplay paid tribute to Elton John during the final stop of the legendary singer’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour in Sweden.

As John’s five-decade live career came to a close at Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena on Saturday (July 8), Chris Martin and Co. — who were simultaneously performing in Gothenburg, Sweden — appeared onscreen through a live video broadcast at John’s show to honor the musical icon.

Elton John and His Band Receive Billboard Awards For Making Touring History

After performing a moving cover of “Rocket Man” alongside his band, Martin gave a heartwarming speech about John’s remarkable career.

Thank you for everything, Sir Elton 🚀 🩷 💫 pic.twitter.com/OOeqQhh3x8 — Coldplay (@coldplay) July 9, 2023

He continued, “For everything you’ve done for LGBTQ. Everything you’ve done for fashion and eyewear. Everything you’ve done for sexiness, and love and dressing gowns. Everything you’ve done for music, everything Bernie has done for lyrics, everything your band has done over the thousands of shows you’ve done. We love you so much, happy retirement, and we’re going to miss you so much.”

John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour launched in September 2018 in North America and went on to play 330 concerts around the globe. In January, it became the highest grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore history, passing Ed Sheeran ’s The Divide Tour. As of dates reported to Boxscore through June 18, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour had now grossed $910.4 million , making it the first tour to ever break the $900 million barrier. Last month, John received an award from Billboard for having the top-grossing tour of all time.

Prior to launching into “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” the final song of Saturday’s show in Sweden, John took a moment to look back on his spectacular body of work.

“I’ve had the most wonderful career, beyond belief,” he told the audience. “Fifty-two years of pure joy playing music. How lucky am I to play music? But you know, I wouldn’t be sitting here and talking to you if it wasn’t for you. You bought the singles, the CDs, the albums, the cassettes, but more importantly, you bought the tickets to the shows. You know how much I love to play live. It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys. You’ve been absolutely magnificent.”

Review: Coldplay successfully turns to Max Martin for hits, but there’s no helping these lyrics

Will Champion, from left, Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland and Guy Berryman of Coldplay.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Look, there’s no defending the lyrics on this new Coldplay album.

In one song from “Music of the Spheres,” which carries some sort of overarching concept about the citizens of a distant galaxy, frontman Chris Martin actually sings these words in this order: “We’re only human / But we’re capable of kindness / So they call us humankind.”

In another he compares himself to a broken record that’s “not playing right,” then delivers the same line in reverse, I guess to prove it?

“Drocer nekorb a ekil mi,” Martin sings — an all-time groaner no one can say looked good on paper.

when is coldplay's final tour

But if these embarrassments deserve all the eye rolls they’re getting in largely unimpressed reviews of “Music of the Spheres,” Coldplay seems worth sticking up for in regard to another point of emerging critical consensus: that the British band’s ninth studio LP — an eager collaboration with teen-pop hitmaker Max Martin that features appearances by BTS and Selena Gomez — somehow represents a betrayal of the once-honorable Coldplay ethos.

“Spheres” has been described as craven and desperate; it’s been widely characterized as a transparent commercial ploy at a tough moment for old guys with guitars. Sniffed the Guardian : “There must be more dignified ways to stay at the top.”

Adele returns with all the breakup feels on ‘Easy on Me’: Listen

Adele’s first new song in six years, ‘Easy on Me,’ is the lead single from her forthcoming album, ‘30,’ due Nov. 19.

Oct. 14, 2021

But when was this group ever dignified? Since Chris Martin and his bandmates broke out more than two decades ago with the shamelessly sentimental “ Yellow ” — “I wrote a song for you / And all the things you do” — the whole point of Coldplay has been voicing the big, cringe-y emotions other musicians are too cool (or too concerned with appearing cool) to voice.

True, they didn’t start out enlisting Top 40 song doctors to help run those feelings up the charts. There was nothing unambitious, though, about songs like “ Clocks ” and “ Viva la Vida ” that deployed hand-played arrangements to mimic the increasingly mechanized sound of mid-2000s pop.

"Music of the Spheres" was produced by pop hitmaker Max Martin.

And soon enough they were recruiting folks from beyond their guitar-band milieu: Rihanna for “ Princess of China ,” Avicii for “ A Sky Full of Stars ,” the gosh-darn Chainsmokers for “ Something Just Like This ,” which remains Coldplay’s most-streamed track on Spotify with more than 1.6 billion plays.

So it’s not quite clear why the two Martins’ meet-up on “Spheres” is being viewed as especially brazen, except that the new album follows a relative bomb from Coldplay in 2019’s experimental “ Everyday Life ,” which dabbled in African and Middle Eastern music and failed to spin off any monster singles. Thanks to the pandemic — and to Coldplay’s avowed commitment to figuring out how to travel in an environmentally sustainable fashion — “Everyday Life” also came and went without one of the band’s global stadium tours. (This week the group announced it will return to the road in 2022 with a “dance floor that generates electricity when fans jump up and down,” as the BBC put it .)

Notwithstanding that heightened motivation, “Spheres” is in reality no more — or less! — on the nose than Coldplay’s earlier albums; that the band never before titled songs with emojis, as it does several times here, was almost certainly a function of technology rather than taste.

“ Humankind ” and the vaguely Weeknd-ish “ Higher Power ” are zippy electro-rock tracks with sharp hooks and lots of crisp digital detailing; the mellow, love-dazed “ Biutyful ” pitches up Chris Martin’s vocals to an unintelligible chipmunk squeak — not a bad move given that he turns out to be telling somebody, “I hope they name you a rocket and take you for a ride for free.”

when is coldplay's final tour

The singer unloads more declarations of interstellar devotion — one presumes he’s singing about actress Dakota Johnson, whom he’s been dating for four Earth years — in “My Universe,” the cut with BTS, which recently gave Coldplay its first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 since 2008. (For BTS, it was the boy band’s first trip to the top since, uh, July.)

“In the night, I lie and look up at you,” Martin sings over a shimmering disco groove, “When the morning comes, I watch you rise.” Drippy, as usual, but this is not a song that should scandalize anyone not scandalized by “ Adventure of a Lifetime ” in 2015, back when Martin was working with Stargate and writing sappily about dating Jennifer Lawrence.

More intriguing on “Music of the Spheres” is the Gomez duet, “Let Somebody Go,” an undulating white-soul ballad with big Bruce Hornsby energy that sort of puts the lie to the whole happy-sellout idea.

Ditto the stomping hard-rock “ People of the Pride ,” which has fuzzy guitars, vaguely political lyrics and a dark and jazzy horn chart sure to remind you of Coldplay’s old heroes in Radiohead.

It’s by far the album’s worst song, and the one that feels most unshaped by Max Martin’s touch. Careful what you wish for.

Coldplay to Release Final Album in 2025

  • Diana Barcelata
  • January 3, 2022

Chris Martin has announced that Coldplay will make their final album in 2025.

Coldplay Has Plans for 12 Albums, Last One Coming Out in 2025

During an interview with BBC Radio 2 ‘s Jo Whiley, the musician explained that the band will stop releasing new music after the album but continue to tour with their existing catalog. “Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025. After that, I think we will only tour,” Chris said. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalog, as it were, finishes then.”

The news arrives just a couple of months after Chris revealed to NME that Coldplay has plans to make a total of 12 albums. The group recently released their ninth studio album Music of the Spheres in October, which charted at number 1.

“We’re going to make 12 albums,” Chris confessed. “Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too. I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult. It feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing.’ I don’t think that’s what we’ll do. I know that’s what we’ll do in terms of studio albums.”

The Band Heads Over to an Environment-Friendly World Tour

In October, Coldplay announced a world tour with a range of initiatives designed to mitigate its environmental impact. The band has promised to cut CO2 emissions by 50% compared with their 2016-17 world tour; and almost entirely use renewable energy to power the stage show.

The tour is part of a 12-point plan to cut their carbon footprint, two years after the band pledged not to tour until they could do so in a more sustainable way. Chris said fans will be on “kinetic flooring.” “When they move, they power the concert,” he told BBC entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson. “And we have bicycles too that do the same thing.” It will also feature a stage made of renewable materials, solar panels, while the battery and main power will be drawn from renewable sources.

Coldplay's Chris Martin apologises to Bono lookalike fan telling him he can 'punch' him in the face after calling him fat

COLDPLAY’S Chris Martin apologised to a fan during one of his Croke Park concerts after calling him fat – telling the fan he could “punch me in the face”.

During an improv sing a long session at the band’s Croke Park gig on Friday night, Chris sings to random fans in the crowds chosen from the band’s Jumbotron cameras.

In one instance, the camera zoomed in on a man wearing a black shirt and a black cowboy hat, who Chris said looked like Bono and if it was indeed Bono he should lose a few pounds - but quickly apologised for the off the cuff remark.

But feeling guilty for his remark, Chris apologised again as he abruptly stopped playing the start of Fix You - telling the unidentified man he can “punch me in the face” if the man ever met him in the street.

Chris told the 82,000 audience at the Dublin venue: “Sometimes that improvised bit goes wrong. That was really bad. Wherever you are, the man with the leather jacket and the glasses and the Bono joke. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. I can’t talk. I’ve got several pairs of Spanx on underneath here.

“I feel bad but I love you wherever you are. Please forgive me. If you see me around, you can punch me in the face.

“Ok, let’s play Fix You again.

“Sh*t, it’s not easy being a frontman,” he jokingly added.

On Thursday night, Chris took a swipe at Dublin hoteliers for hiking up room prices during their four sold out shows.

While thanking everyone who made it possible for Coldplay to stage their spectacular production in Croker, he said: “Thank you for the effort it takes to get to a show like this, and the pain in the arse it is to get here and get home…the crazy hotel prices, which is a bad thing. I’m going to have a word with someone about that.”

Monday night is Coldplay’s final sold out Croke Park gig in Dublin with the band performing to 320,000 in total since Thursday.

Their Music of the Spheres world tour is one of the most popular in history with a total of 9.1 million tickets worldwide being sold to date.
