To summarize the above comparison table we can conclude that the Trek Marlin 4 is lighter, has more front suspension travel, a more aggressive handlebar positioning, and shorter chainstay, and wheelbase making for a faster handling bike that would be less stable.

Okay, time to compare their mid-range cross-country bike options . This should be a rather fair battle. Comparing the Giant Talon 1 and the Trek Marlin. Again a 2022 Talon model and 2023 Marlin model, so keep that in mind.

The Talon seems to be lighter again, with the largest gear for descending fast and a longer chainstay.

Both bikes have the same tire clearance, the same quality components

However, the Marlin has superior climbing gear inches. Slightly more affordable price tag, and that longer trial for more relaxed steering and longer wheelbase. With the 20mm longer front suspension travel.

Let’s compare their higher-end cross-country models for these bikes. Most of the higher-end bikes for the Talon range are all electric mountain bikes. So we are comparing the 2022 Giant Talon 0 to the New Trek Marlin 8 Gen 3. (Not quite the fairest comparison but close enough.)

The Giant Talon 0 is a previous year’s model and they do not have a modern version. The Trek Marlin seems to be the most recommended choice. Not only that. The Marlin 8 has better quality groupset components and more superior climbing gear with a handy 17.5” which is great for mountain biking on those steep climbs. The trail on this Marlin is on the longer end for mountain bikes giving a slower, but calmer, steering response.

The Talon is lighter and more affordable but only if you can find one. The next best model is the Talon 1. You get a more upright riding position.

Both bikes have the same suspension travel and tire clearance.

As we can tell the Trek Marlin seems like the superior bike across the board when it comes to cross-country mountain biking applications, especially for climbing.

Trek Marlin vs Giant Talon – Making the right selection

Different bike brands could sometimes share similar features and benefits in their various models. This is the case of Trek Marlin and Giant Talon. We take a look at what’s important when making the right selection.

I came across the Giant Talon bike a few years ago when my cousin received it as a gift for her 17th birthday. I thought it was quite stellar and she even let me take a few trips around the block on it. It felt great!

It wasn’t planned but as it turns out, that one ride piqued my interest in cycling and I started to research more about the bike and others like it.

That’s how I came across the Trek Marlin. It appeared to be similar to the Talon with very minor tweaks on either side. So, I dug deeper and uncovered just how different they were.

What is the difference between Trek Marlin and Giant Talon?

Trek marlin vs giant talon – how do they compare.

Trek Marlin is built for racers but that doesn’t mean it cannot be used for casual rides to the park. On the Trek XL bike , the seat tube is at an angle of 73 degrees and it is paired with a head tube at a 69.5-degree angle and a 1159mm wheelbase. 

The Talon family has model 1,2 and 3 in their catalog. They all have an aluminum frame the difference lies in the size of their wheels and the value of some of their components. With Talon 3 you get 29†wheels while on the Talon 2 and 1 you get a 27.5†wheel.

Talon drives a hard bargain as a cross country bike with the 73.5-degree seat angle that maximizes your power to the pedals and keeps your tire traction firm. 

The head angle is slightly slacking at a 69-degree angle which is a bit more relaxed than on the Marlin. Reach and stack are either short or high across all models to give riders a more upright riding position.

Drivetrain 

Trek Marlin provides riders with a 2×9-speed drivetrain that is a combination of the Shimano Altus shifters, front derailleur, and the rear derailleur controlled by the Shimano Acera system. 

This setup is done like so because Acera is the better derailleur and because most of the shifting is handled by the rear, it makes more sense practically and economically to boost the rear and pair it with cheaper shifters.

The Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are unbeatably the best control system any bike could have because they are great all year round regardless of the season.

Although the Bontrager Connection wheels are not tubeless-ready, they wrap snuggly around the Bontrager XR2Comp tires and are tied to aluminum quick-release hubs.

The Giant Talon offers a similar type and speed drivetrain, chainring and cassette set up. A difference in mechanism is obvious in Talon’s brake choice which is the TRP hydraulic disc brakes.  

In riding experience, this difference in the brand name is not quite significant other than the matter of lower value that TRP disc brakes are in the face of Shimano.

On the plus side, Talon’s Giant GXOV3 wheels are tubeless-ready but the Maxxis Ikon tires are not which means that if you want the full benefits of a tubeless set-up, you need to buy tubeless-compatible tires, the valves, and sealant to install successfully.

Riding Experience 

The aggressive geometry of the Marlin bike makes for a bike that does as you wish when riding hard. With the coil-spring fork and agile steering, this bike can conquer technical and extra rugged terrain. 

On sharp and sudden turns, the bike displays good tracking. However, because the wheels are not tubeless, the tires suffer from high tire pressure in extremely rocky terrain which makes it hard to hold the line.

Thankfully, there is a process you can follow to have the tubeless wheel option installed.

The Talon 2 seems to achieve a balance between a commuter, fitness, and experimental racing bike. With its light and fast tires, it breezes through dry trails and paths without any lag on paved roads. 

It is capable of steering sharply and responding quickly to pedal rotations and can see you through some rough and rocky terrain effortlessly.

Trek Marlin vs Giant Talon – A Comparison Overview

This bike is available in seven sizes starting from XS to XXL. It features two chainrings in compromise for the smaller number of gear cogs in the 9-speed drivetrain.

These chainrings create smaller jumps between gears which makes the bike perfect for beginners in the world of mountain biking.

The 22/36 gears on Marlin 7’s XS bike are easier to control and the 36×11 on the XXL are more expansive compared to other bike brands and they offer faster rides.

The Marlin bike brand offers two women-specific bikes featuring lower heights in standover, shorter cranks, short-reach brake levers, narrower handlebars, and saddles designed with women in mind.

Giant Talon Review 

This bike is hailed as a great all-terrain commuter, fitness, and experimental racing bike because of the 100mm fork, 2×9-speed drivetrain, and the tubeless-ready wheels.

The coil spring fork suspension offered by RockShox XC30 may not feel as refined as an air spring fork, and may also be heavier but it doesn’t weigh down the front end and you can go over high obstacles almost effortlessly.

There is a preload adjustment offered to make customizable changes to suit your specific riding style and weight. Another plus to the suspension features is the lockout lever that can be used to turn suspension on or off based on the terrain.

• Gear indicator
• Tread pattern not as aggressive

Verdict: So, which is better – Trek Marlin or Giant Talon?

The  Giant Talon  is better than the Trek Marlin. The Giant Talon takes the biscuit Partly because it offers more features and benefits in terms of the quick-release levers, gear indicators, and the option to customize and upgrade parts of it.

Another large factor that led to this conclusion is the ability of the bike to fit the needs of various types of cyclists and their riding styles.

Although Trek Marlin drives a hard bargain, they don’t elicit as much excitement as the Talon.

Is the trek Marlin a good gift for my 13-year-old son?

Unless your child weighs more than 150 pounds, I would discourage you from making that purchase.  This is because the RockShox Suspension on the Trek Marlin is spring-coil which your child is not heavy enough to weigh down. This will create vigorous bounce on the front wheel and lead to discouragement because he won’t get to use it out on the rugged terrain.

I just bought my talon 2, any suggestions on what to upgrade first?

The dropper post was my first upgrade.  Solely because it comes in handy in the event of a race.

Getting into trail riding and racing can be a little overwhelming. After all, most of the best bikes out there that can handle rough trails and high speeds are quite expensive. They’re highly specialized machines with a few goals in mind. 

Trail bikes must be:

• Lightweight
• Easy to steer and control

Fortunately, as technology continues to advance, more affordable XC bike options are becoming available. As frames become more streamlined, and advances in components make effective options cheaper, there are more choices available to cyclists and trail riders who don’t have sky-high bike budgets. 

Enter the Trek Marlin 7, the flagship of the affordable Marlin line. This is an affordable bike with a race-ready profile and fairly high-quality components. 

Our comprehensive review of the Trek Marlin 7 will cover the bike’s main features and benefits, how it performs in real life, and some head-to-head comparisons with similar models. 

Trek is one of the largest companies in the mountain biking world. It offers a wide variety of models from affordable entry-level bikes to premium racing bikes aimed specifically at the pros. Trek bikes are consistently high performing, thanks to great frame design and well thought out component choices. 

The Marlin line is one of Trek’s more affordable offerings, but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t serious bikes. The whole line is designed to be a good option for cross-country riding and mountain bikers who need a good, durable, fast bike without a huge price tag. 

This means that the Marlin line makes some compromises in order to keep prices lower. However, the total package of each bike is greater than the sum of its component parts. The Marlin 7 is the most expensive bike in the line, and it is also the most advanced. 

While it can be used as a commuter or a leisure bike, this really isn’t what the Marlin 7 is designed for. It’s aimed more at serious cyclists, and those who are looking to up their game, but who are limited to bikes costing under 1k. 

It’s also designed to enable customization and trail-performance improvements with some minor, relatively low-cost, modifications. 

Things to Consider Before Buying an XC Mountain Bike 

The main thing that you should consider before investing in an XC mountain bike such as the Trek Marlin 7 is whether you want to get into cross-country or mountain biking. While many of these bikes work as commuter bikes and leisure bikes in suburban and urban neighborhoods, this isn’t really what they’re designed for. 

More importantly, bikes that are designed to work as commuter bikes and leisure bikes are better designed for those jobs. XC Mountain bikes use their manufacturing budget on very different components and features to those of your typical commuter bike. 

You should also consider the price point when you’re in the market for an XC mountain bike. While good models are becoming more affordable, there’s still a limit as to what your dollar can get you. 

The more you spend, the more likely you are to get better suspension, more advanced braking systems, and a lighter, more streamlined frame.  

As you move down in price, you should pay close attention to frame and suspension systems. Those are the two most important aspects of any XC mountain bike, and they can both have a huge impact on performance. 

Even when you need to compromise for more affordable components in other areas, you should avoid compromising when it comes to the suspension and frame. 

Features and Benefits

Here are some of the key features and benefits of the Marlin 7. We’re only looking at the standard setup, but many of these components can be upgraded if you wish. 

The frame is the main component of the Trek Marlin 7 , as well as the only component which can’t be upgraded on the bike. Fortunately, there isn’t any reason why you’d want to upgrade this bike frame. 

The frame is designed with a reasonably aggressive rider stance and good racing balance. It’s very aerodynamic and about as light as can be expected from a durable XC mountain bike frame at this price. 

The carefully welded aluminum can handle just about the worst that any trail can throw at it. At 31.4 lbs., it’s heavier than some competition-oriented bikes, but lighter than many other models in its price range. 

Overall, it’s a good design and one which is ready for trail rides, races, and competitions, as well as for more casual riding.

Suspension System

This bike doesn’t offer a rear suspension system. However, the fork is a RockShox model and has 100mm of movement thanks to a spring coil in a hydraulic boosted system. 

This means that the front fork can absorb a lot of the jolts of impact without losing control. It can struggle a little on the roughest sections of the most technical trails, but this isn’t a huge downside as almost all bikes in this price range offer similar performance. 

The fork also offers an easy-to-reach locking system which makes it possible to turn off the suspension when you don’t need it, saving on wear and tear. 

It doesn’t have the scaling suspension sensitivity of more advanced forks, but this isn’t a huge disadvantage as this model is reactive without being overly springy or aggressive. Most of the time you won’t want to adjust the shock sensitivity anyway.

The wheels are a fairly standard setup and work with tire sizes 27.5″/29″ x 2.20″, which gives you a reasonable range of different tire setups. The rims aren’t tubeless-ready, but it’s a relatively easy upgrade if you want to go tubeless for better trail performance. 

The basic Marlin 7 setup has 18 gears. The gear indicator gives you a handy reminder of which gear you’re using, making it simpler to learn to use the full range of gears and to switch gears quickly on more technically difficult trails. 

The entire gear system, including front and rear derailleur, is made from affordable Shimano parts. Shimano is one of the best manufacturers for high-performance gear systems. You get an Atlus shifter and front derailleur with an Acera rear derailleur. 

The whole system moves smoothly between gears. The gearing system is well-optimized for durability and switching quickly between gears.

You also get a hydraulic disc braking system with this bike, which is quite an upgrade from what you usually see on a bike in this price point. More specifically, you get Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, although this isn’t Shimano’s best braking system. 

These brakes are quick and responsive, and don’t cause shuddering or instability. They also don’t tend to pull to either side, which makes them a good choice for more technical trails. 

You should schedule regular maintenance for your brakes. Regular tune-ups and simple maintenance is all these brakes should require unless you really put them through the ringer. 

Is the Trek X Caliber 7 or the Trek Marlin 7 a Better Bike Option?

Looking for a reliable bike? A trek x caliber 7 bike review can help you decide. With its lightweight frame and smooth gear shifting, the X Caliber 7 is perfect for trail enthusiasts. However, the Trek Marlin 7 offers superior suspension and more versatile features, making it a great choice for adventurous riders.

What Other Customer Says

Users consistently comment that the Marlin 7 exceeds expectations for a bike in this price range. The racing-ready frame and reasonable mix of price and quality from each component out-performs similar bike models.

Trek Marlin 7 vs Giant Talon 2

The Giant Talon 2 is another Trek model just released in 2020. Both bikes offer a sturdy aluminum frame and hydraulic disc brakes. 

The Marlin 7 has two compatible tire sizes, giving you a little more flexibility than the Giant Talon 2, which only supports 27.5” wheels.

Both bikes also have a 2 x 9 drivetrain, and a RockShox fork. 

However, the Giant Talon 2 offers a slight improvement in its gearing system (still a Shimano system) and is a slightly lower price. 

While both bikes are similar, the Giant Talon 2 is ultimately a better deal thanks to its lower price and improved gear system.  

Trek Marlin 7 vs Marlin 6

Design-wise, the Marlin 6 and Marlin 7 are incredibly similar bikes. The frames are similar, and both are aluminum and durably welded. 

There are two major differences between the Marlin 6 and the Marlin 7 in terms of design. The Marlin 7 has an upgraded fork, as well as an upgraded rear derailleur. These differences can have a significant impact on performance as the Marlin 6 doesn’t offer much in the way of a suspension system. 

At the time of writing, there is about a $150 difference in price. This difference is largely just the difference in the price of the parts, so generally, we’d say it’s better to go ahead and upgrade to the Marlin 7 if you’re debating between the two.

Trek Marlin 7 vs Roscoe 6

The Trek Marlin 7 and the Roscoe 6 are both Trek models, and both are designed as entry-level bikes that are racing ready. 

However, there’s roughly a $200 difference in price between the Marlin 7 and the Roscoe 6. The Marlin is currently the flagship of the Marlin line, while the Roscoe 6 is a couple of generations behind the latest Roscoe model. 

One of the biggest differences is in the shifter. The Marlin 7 has a very affordable entry-level set of Shimano shifters, while the Roscoe 6 is upgraded several steps to a Shimano Deore system. 

The SR Suntour XCM 32 fork is also a serious upgrade in the suspension system, which offers a smoother ride which is much easier to control. 

While both are good entry-level options, the Marlin 7 is definitely the more affordable of the two. However, if you can afford some of the component upgrades that come with the Roscoe 6, its performance improvements are well worth it. 

Trek Marlin 7 vs Marlin 5

The Trek Marlin 5, two generations behind the Marlin 7, shows some of the tech differences between the two. 

As with the differences between the Marlin 7 and the Marlin 6, there are several similarities with a couple of significant performance differences. 

Between the 5 and the 7, the Marlin line has upgraded the derailleur and shifter sets. For example, the Marlin 5 uses the Tourney line of Shimano shifters, while the Marlin uses Atlus and Avilio models. 

The Marlin 5 also relies on a mechanical disc brake system, while the Marlin 7 has upgraded to hydraulic disc brakes. 

That being said, while there are serious performance differences, the Marlin 5 can still be considered to be a good investment for many riders. Overall, the Marlin 7 is about the best low-cost entry-level racing bike you can buy for less than 1K of upfront investment. There are a few components you’ll most likely want to upgrade as you start to take racing a little more seriously

Co-op Cycles DRT 1.1 Bike

REI's Co-op Cycles DRT 1.1 Bike is a solid trail mountain bike to start out with and is very competitively priced. The aluminum frame is lightweight yet durable, and all of its components are high-quality. The tires are on the smaller side at 27.5 inches. But the 21 available gears and SR Suntour front suspension system combine for a smooth, even ride on just about any rough terrain.

The only drawback is that some assembly is required upon receiving the bike if you opt to have it shipped. Still, this is easily one of the best value mountain bikes under $1,000 on the market right now.

Cannondale Trail 8

Cannondale's Trail 8 Bike is available at a price similar to the REI DRT 1.1. With many similar advantages, such as an aluminum frame and similar tire sizes, though larger sizes of the bike feature 29-inch tires, this mountain-ready bike is quite competitive. Many of the components come from the same vendors, guaranteeing a great build.

The only ways in which the REI Co-op bike wins out is that the Cannondale has slimmer tires that are less suited to gravel and less travel in the suspension system. The fork is just 75 mm compared to the Co-op bike's 100 mm. So if you take major drops, the ride might not be as smooth. But, with a sub-$500 sale price, this is another incredible value mountain bike, especially one branded with the legendary Cannondale name.

Giant 2021 ATX

The Giant 2021 ATX mountain bike is ideal for those looking dip their toe in the off-road waters. The mountain bike-style ride is equipped with an aluminum frame and 26-inch to 27.5-inch tires, depending on your bike size.

This two-wheeler is great as a commuter though its suspension fork allows you to venture onto light off-road rides on gravel, dirt paths, or easy trails, too. Integrated mounts for racks and fenders also mean you can customize it to suit your needs with additional safety and cargo options.

Giant Talon 2 (2022)

Specialized Rockhopper Comp

At exactly a grand, technically Specialized's Rockhopper Comp doesn't qualify as a sub-$1,000 mountain bike, but hear us out: It has everything you want in a dream mountain bike and nothing you don't. From the premium A1 aluminum frame to the SR SunTour XCM fork, this is a bike built for screaming down singletracks.

Outfitted with Shimano hydraulic brakes and a MicroSHIFT 1x9 drivetrain, this bike will handle beautifully and give you everything you need to conquer steep climbs while confidently tackling steep descents. Plus, it's pretty damn handsome to boot.

Trek Marlin 7 (Gen 2)

The final mountain bike in Trek's Marlin lineup of picks is the Marlin 7 (Gen 2) and is perfect for more advanced mountain bikers. It's a powerful bike for those who are still learning the ropes though, too.

The latest-gen Marlin 7 is designed to keep up with high-end racing bikes, thanks to additionally upgraded components and a RockShox suspension fork. The wide range of gears enables you to keep up whether you're hitting big trails or major cross-country rides or races.
