Tom Cruise on his way to shoot ‘Mission Impossible 8’ in South Africa!

American veteran actor Tom Cruise is headed to South Africa to film ‘Mission Impossible 8’ in Durban and Cape Town.

American actor Tom Cruise is heading to South Africa to shoot Mission Impossible 8 which is set to be released on 28 June 2024.

TOM CRUISE TO SHOOT IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Weekend Argus reported that Mission Impossible 8 , starring Tom Cruise is expected to film in South Africa. The latest instalment of the popular movie franchise will be filmed in Durban and Cape Town. Sources close to the production team revealed that Cruise and other cast members will hit South African soil and begin filming in Durban in a few months’ time..

“We are set to be in Durban for three months as from 6 February for Mission Impossible and possibly a week in Cape Town,” said a source to the publication.

This is believed to boost tourism in the country.

“We’re delighted to see recovery in our visitor economy, with domestic and international tourists injecting some sorely needed capital into the city,” said Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism to the publication. “We do understand that recovery will take a little longer than we had hoped but we are optimistic that this trend towards recovery continues in February. As we enter our ‘second’ peak season. While the numbers look better, we need sustained tourism to really impact our local small business sector and start turning the devastating blows dealt by Omicron-linked travel bans around,” he continued.

Despite the interesting - sometimes controversial - moments in his personal and religious affiliations to Scientology, Cruise has remained a fan favourite for his extraordinary roles and immense work ethic as an actor and artist - and we respect that!

One of the most impressive aspects of the franchise has always been his decision to ditch the idea of using stunt doubles for many of the action films major scenes - often landing him severe injuries.

He takes cruising for a bruising to a whole new level, right? If only we could still do some of the things we used to be able to do when we were younger - clearly Tom can.

Tom Cruise spotted on Mission: Impossible 8 set in South Africa

Tom Cruise looked much more like himself on the set of Mission: Impossible 8, after stunning fans with his unrecognisable appearance last year.

Tom Cruise offered a very warm welcome to fans as he wrapped filming for the day on the set of the new Mission: Impossible movie in South Africa recently.

The Hollywood star, 59, looked remarkably youthful as he waved and smiled to waiting onlookers in Kruger National Park where production for the film has been taking place.

Cruise is reportedly staying in the nearby town of Hoedspruit, Limpopo, near the border with Mozambique.

Filming on the eighth instalment of the iconic action franchise has been under way since late last year, kicking off just weeks after the cast and crew wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 .

Cruise is once again reprising the lead role of Ethan Hunt, and told photographers that he’d love to explore the area in which they’re filming on a safari, but has been working “seven days a week”.

He’s also reportedly learned to fly a World War II military plane for the latest chapter.

A source from the set told The Sun : “Tom had started to learn to fly a Boeing Stearman biplane earlier this year for a major stunt scene in Mission: Impossible 8 .

“It’s obviously a highly skilled task but as usual he has no plans to cut any corners or bring in a stuntman.”

Cruise wore a big grin as he headed over to his helicopter. Picture: Jannie Nikola Photography/Mega

The insider continued: “Filming has only just wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 but Tom has not given himself a break.

“And trying to film jaw-dropping scenes with an 80-year-old plane is particularly dangerous.”

Cruise looked more like himself in his latest outing after leaving fans shocked with his appearance at an LA Dodgers baseball game in San Francisco late last year.

Photographed watching the game alongside his son, he looked noticeably different as he appeared more “puffy” than his Top Gun days.

Fans speculated that the actor had either “gained weight or has a face full of fillers” after the “bloated” photographs spread via social media.

The pictures were shared widely on social media. Picture: Twitter

Back in September, Cruise and his film crew were seen celebrating after they had wrapped up shooting Mission: Impossible ’s seventh movie.

Due to the pandemic, filming was fraught with setbacks including multiple Covid outbreaks on set, causing the production to be shut down for weeks at a time.

Why Is Tom Cruise Shooting 'Mission Impossible' In South Africa?

South Africans in the province of Limpopo have been excited to have Hollywood star Tom Cruise in their neck of the woods. Cruise is currently on location in the small town of Hoedspruit to film the 8th installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

The film marks Cruise’s eighth appearance as the lead character. He’s been filling the role of Ethan Hunt for an amazing 26 years, though producers have hinted that the eighth film will be the last in the series.

Why Did 'Mission Impossible' Choose South Africa?

The films in the Mission: Impossible franchise are shot in real locations , rather than on sound stages or using green screens. The producers include breathtaking spots for the on-screen action.

Previous shoots have included Dubai, Seville, Shanghai, Prague, Budapest, and New Zealand’s South Island. And South Africa certainly has a wide variety of breathtaking scenery to choose from.

It’s Not The Only Hollywood Movie To Be Shot In South Africa

The country at the southernmost tip of Africa has been used for a number of shoots. The striking scenery has tempted many filmmakers. What may be the last in the Mission: Impossible franchise won't be the first or last of the movies shot in South Africa .

In 2017 The Dark Tower , which featured English actor Idris Elba, was shot in the stark Karoo desert and in the majestic Cederberg mountain range.

RELATED: Idris Elba Might Be In Talks Of Being The Next James Bond

2018 Saw Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron using locations in Johannesburg’s city Centre. In the same year, the action film Tomb Raider , featuring Swedish actress Alicia Vikande , was shot in and around Cape Town.

Mission: Impossible 8 will showcase the scenic Blyde River Canyon, and it's also been hinted that some scenes will feature the scenic areas around Durban and Cape Town.

A Number Of Hollywood Stars Were Born In South Africa

The country has a thriving film industry and has given rise to many famous actors. Most people know Hollywood A-lister, Charlize Theron, hails from the country.

But there are a number of other stars who were born in South Africa who have gone on to make their mark in the film world.

What’s Planned For The Film’s Signature Stunt?

Fans of the franchise love the death-defying stunts in the films. In fact, after the second film had hit screens, it was later revealed that it was actually written around the action sequences rather than the plots.

Each movie features a signature stunt, which is punted as part of the publicity.

The excitement is further heightened by the fact that Tom Cruise actually performs the stunts himself. In Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol , the actor was the one who really scaled the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. It's a fact loved by fans the world over that Tom doesn't have a stunt double.

RELATED: Tom Cruise Can Hold His Breath Underwater Longer Than Most Humans

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation saw the actor hanging off the side of a flying plane 5000 feet up in the air. Tom has also hung off the rocks at Dead Horse Point in Utah and driven a motorbike off a cliff in Norway.

The stunts are definitely worth it for Cruise, who makes massive amounts of money from the franchise.

Is Ethan Hunt Back To Planes In 'Mission: Impossible 8'?

Locals in South Africa were excited to see WW2 planes arriving in the small town before filming began. The planes were moved to an undisclosed location.

The pre-publicity around the stunt hasn’t been released yet, but Tom was seen piloting a similar plane over the skies in England late last year. Given the evidence, it would seem as though Ethan Hunt may be involved in some high-flying action in the eighth movie.

Either way, fans can be sure Tom will be pulling off some amazing stunts during the filming, just as he has done countless times in the past.

The Covid Pandemic Affected The Release Dates of ' Mission: Impossible' 7 And 8

Mission: Impossible fans will have a feast when installment 8 is released hot on the heels of the seventh movie, which was badly affected by the pandemic.

The seventh film in the franchise was due to start shooting in Venice, Italy in February 2020. The first day’s shooting was scheduled to get going on the very day that Northern Italy went into lockdown. As a result, production was hurriedly moved to Rome.

There was a further delay when the Eternal City was also shut down when cases spiked in the southern part of the country. These delays caused some to return to the urban legend about the Mission Impossible franchise being cursed .

The desperate attempts to outrun the pandemic were like something out of one of the movies, but eventually, producers had to give in and change release dates for Mission Impossible 7 , which has impacted the dates for the next movie, too. Two movies in a row are not going to be a problem for fans, though!

Did you know

  • Trivia The frequent delays caused by COVID-19 ballooned the budget to $291 million, making it the most expensive Mission: Impossible film (surpassing Fallout, $178 million), the most expensive film of Tom Cruise 's career (again surpassing Fallout), and the most expensive film ever produced by Paramount (surpassing Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) , $217 million). The insurance company Chubb originally gave Paramount only £4.4 million (about $5.4 million) for the delays, arguing that the cast and crew could still fulfill their duties to the production despite being infected with COVID-19. Paramount sued Chubb in 2021, and the two companies settled in 2022. In 2023, Chubb gave Paramount a £57 million (about $71 million) payout for the COVID-caused delays, reducing the film's budget to about $220 million, which still makes it the most expensive film for Cruise, Paramount, and the franchise.
  • Goofs Steam trains, especially moving at high speeds, need to be continuously provided with fuel, in this case coal. With the engineers killed and the controls opened all the way, the locomotive would have gradually slowed down and come to a halt as the pressure in the boiler dropped. That train would never have reached the bridge for that distance with no coal provided. Since the early 1900s, when firebox coal consumption exceeded the efforts of two men, the trains have used mechanical stokers. The coal would continue feeding without one missing coal shoveler.

Ethan Hunt : [speaking in italian] Thank you officers. Please. You can wait ouside. Thank you.

Grace : You. You did this.

Ethan Hunt : I called the police. I didn't tell them about your colorful past.

[throwing a file folder]

Ethan Hunt : That's on you. You put-pocleted that the key on another passenger before you were arrested. You exchanged details and arranged to meet later on. Right now somewhere out there hasn't the slighest clue they're holding on to that key for you. An unwitting courier. The perfect accomplice

[describing the person Grace has used as a mule to carry an item]

Ethan Hunt : I'm guessing a man... middle aged? A man waiting his whole life to be noticed by a woman like you. An orphan. Higly intelligent. Inherntly resourceful. Growing up in the poverty left you longing for the finer things. Other's people's things. Someone saw your potential and helped you hone your skills. Skills that gave you the life thought you wanted. Grace : You can't blame a girl for trying to make a dishonest living.

Ethan Hunt : You had no idea what you stealing. Otherwise you never would stolen it.

Grace : Tell you what. You get me out of here, and I'll take you straight to the key.

Ethan Hunt : I have a better idea. You're gonna tell me everything. Then I'll think about getting out of here. Now start with who hired you. And don't lie to me, because I'll know.

Grace : I have no idea who hired me. Contact with the client was almost entirely electronic.

Ethan Hunt : Email?

Grace : Texts.

Ethan Hunt : Encrypted?

Grace : Naturally.

Ethan Hunt : Almost?

Grace : Pardon?

Ethan Hunt : You said contact with client was "almost" entirely electronic.

Grace : There was a dead drop in a cafe in Luxembourg. An envelope.

Ethan Hunt : What was in the envelope?

Grace : A ticket to Abu Dhabi. And... a picture of you. My instructions were to follow you at the airport. You'd be taling a mark. Said mark would have a key and four million in criptocurrency. That drive was useless, by the way. It was empty. The only hope I have of getting paid is to deliver your half of the key.

Ethan Hunt : And you were instructed to deliever it to...

Grace : Venice. Party at Ducake Palace, Tomorrow. Midnight Venice.

Ethan Hunt : [looking at the door] You expecting someone?

Grace : Your friends from the airport. Saw them in the halleay a few minutes ago.

Ethan Hunt : You could have said something sooner.

Grace : Well, they we're chaising you, not me.

Tom Cruise lands his helicopter in South Africa as he arrives to film Mission Impossible 8

  • Jess Lester

  • Updated : 7:55 ET, Feb 16 2022

TOM Cruise has been landing his helicopter in South Africa as he continues filming for Mission Impossible 8.

The Hollywood superstar looked like a real-life Top Gun as he was photographed sat in the driver's seat of the flying machine.

Tom was in the driver's seat of the helicopter

Tom, 59, smiled and waved for the cameras as he hopped out of the huge helicopter after landing it in the town of Hoedspruit.

Wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans, and keeping safe with a black face mask, the actor could be seen hopping out of the aircraft.

He was joined by a co-pilot, who whom he shook hands and offered a hug to after successfully landing in a plain in the South African town.

After jumping out the helicopter, Tom addressed the waiting crowd on Tuesday evening, smiling and laughing towards them.

While the seventh Mission Impossible film is yet to be released, the actor and the rest of the cast have already been busy filming for the eighth.

However, bosses are said to be in crisis talks with star Tom after spending a HUGE £290million on the franchise.

Tom jetted to South Africa to continue work on Mission Impossible 8, flying a fleet of kit and his huge entourage from London, including his personal helicopter.

With neither of their new mega-budget films making it to the cinema yet, Paramount are though to be feeling the pressure on their wallet.

Budgets rocketed as the pandemic caused endless delays and shutdowns.

A planned MI:7 release date of September 2022 has been shifted to July 2023, with a bill for excess costs now thought to be  in the region of £50million .

The switch has had a knock-on effect for MI:8, which is under way.

As one source said “People are starting to sweat on the costs now.”

A movie mole added: “Nobody could have predicted what has happened but the fact is those delays and extra costs are stacking up now and it’s starting to get noticed.

“Even with someone as big as Tom and these films, it’s the sort of money that has leveraged the studio heavily and bosses are desperate to start seeing things hit the screen.

“Top Gun 2 is the first in the pipeline for release now, two years after it was first supposed to be in cinemas, yet production is carrying on with the latest move to South Africa and those bills are just going up and up by the day.”

Nobody makes action films like Tom, who rightly raged “we are the gold standard” when he clashed with production crew about keeping to Covid rules on set in 2020.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has arrived in South Africa to film Mission Impossible 8… and he’s already been treated to a little SA hospitality and humour! UPDATE 16 FEB: See Gillian Leigh Soame’s latest spectacular photos of Tom Cruise in South Africa !

Hoedspruit resident Gillian Leigh Soames, who’s renowned for spotting leopards in the bush, spotted the American celebrity flying over her home in a helicopter on Thursday. Posting a pic to Facebook, Gillian said:

“And there he is, Mr. Tom Cruise, in all his glory, in Hoedspruit! His chopper flew directly over our deck and yes… I flashed him! ?”

And Tom saw! “I flashed him, and the chopper flashed me back ?” she told SAPeople. “I know the chopper (it flies over my house every single morning at 6am and every night at 6pm). Last night it was early at 5pm.”

She says the helicopter was “LOW, about 40 meters only above our deck and hovering! I’m sure it’s because our garden is the ONLY green garden around here for miles and we have a big property! He was 100% looking at our garden ?”

The news of Tom Cruise filming MI8 in SA was first broken by Variety magazine last month, with local sources in SA revealing that he would be shooting around Durban and Cape Town.

Yesterday footage was posted to Twitter, allegedly of Tom flying over Oribi Gorge in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) “to check out the area” for filming.

#TomCruise Tom's already in South Africa! "Tom Cruise flying his own chopper over Oribi Gorge. He is here for a few days to check out the area. In another tweet, photos were shown of the planes that have arrived in Hoedspruit to be used for a big stunt in the film.

The planes for the big stunt arrived in Hoedspruit, South Africa… #MissionImpossible8 #TomCruise pic.twitter.com/GzzFdTrS5c — Tom Cruise News (@TCNews62) February 8, 2022

Gillian says Tom and the crew are expected to be in Hoedspruit (Limpopo) for two months where they’ll apparently be filming Mission Impossible 8 over the Blyde River Canyon which is only an hour away, in Mpumalanga.

“As I sit here, he is living exactly 2.4kms from my house!” says Gillian, who lives on the beautiful Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate . “His helipad is right next to our house.”

Gillian says it’s a great time to be filming at Blyde River Canyon. “It’s perfect right now as it is SOOO lush and green and all the waterfalls are flowing,” she says.

Celebrity sightings in Hoedspruit are becoming as common as wildlife sightings. This week it’s Tom Cruise, last week it was YouTuber Logan Paul, and the week before it was another YouTuber David Dobrik.

South Africans have posted messages welcoming Tom to their beautiful country, and expressing hope that the Hollywood blockbuster, featuring spectacular SA landscapes, will boost tourism to the country. And of course, there’s been more humour…

Has Tom Cruise’s student become the master? Close , but not quite.

Cruise is still going strong at 62 years old (nearly the same age as Jack Lemmon when he made Grumpy Old Men ) with multiple projects in production, including Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film , a rumored Top Gun 3 and Edge of Tomorrow 2 , the movie where he goes to space , and, of course, Mission: Impossible 8 . The retitled sequel to 2023’s thrilling Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One started filming in 2022 before production shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Cameras resumed rolling earlier this year, and Cruise is once again risking his life for our entertainment. Bless him.

Here’s everything we know about Mission: Impossible 8 , including plot details, the cast, and release date.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ended with AI threatening to take over the world ( couldn’t relate ) and Ethan Hunt and friends needing to find a submarine. Mission: Impossible 8 will presumably take place shortly after the events of that film, but director and co-writer (and Taylor Swift fan ) Christopher McQuarrie has mostly kept quiet about specific plot details. He did, however, reveal that they filmed in South Africa and the Arctic. “Tom and I are always trying to get the big sh*t out of the way first,” he told Empire . “South Africa was intense. The aerial sequence is… It’s just outrageous.”

To quote an I Think You Should Leave legend, gimme dat .

Mission: Impossible 8 will also have an underwater sequence that fixes a pet peeve of Cruise’s. “Tom and I are constantly reevaluating our own work and asking ourselves how we could have done it better. We’ve done underwater sequences previously. We’ve worked underwater in Edge of Tomorrow , and we worked underwater in Rogue Nation , and we left very dissatisfied with those sequences,” McQuarrie told Collider . “And we analyze why we were dissatisfied. What were all the factors working against us? The biggest being, not having real knowledge in that area.” Now they do.

As for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning was split into two films (even if Mission: Impossible 8 lost the “Dead Reckoning” subtitle), McQuarrie explained , “I knew I wanted to expand the cast, and I knew I wanted to give each one of those characters more to do, so I knew the movie was going to be bigger and longer than [ Mission: Impossible – Fallout ]. And at which point I said, ‘Why are we fighting this? Why are we going to try to jam this into two hours? Let’s just break it in half and make it two movies.’ That really was the rationale behind it being a two-part movie. It just it wasn’t just that the story was bigger but that we wanted more emotion in the movie.”

Tom Cruise will be back for Mission: Impossible 8 , obviously. Other confirmed cast members include Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, and Frederick Schmidt. Could Rebecca Ferguson return as well, despite what happened to Ilsa Faust in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ?

“To speak very clearly — because I know a lot of people are sad about it, I’m sad about it — I had filmed three films. My deal was done. And I love her beyond words. Beyond words. I think she’s the most awesome, fantastic character,” the Silo actress said on the UnWrapped podcast. “Selfishly, that’s a lot of time to make a Mission film. And unless you’re going to have a lot of screen time, that’s a lot of time sitting around waiting to film a huge movie that could take over a year to film. It’s dedication.” That sounds like a no.

At least we’ll always have the opera scene .

Release Date

Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled for release on May 23, 2025.

No trailer.

But I have something more important to discuss: what’s your favorite Tom Cruise stunt in the Mission: Impossible movies? Is it the vault scene in the original, or the time he rode a motorcycle off a cliff? I’m partial to the Burj Khalifa sequence in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol . Cruise really initiated the death-defying version of ghost protocol with this one.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch Ethan Hunt and the rest of the IMF attempt to save the world, picking up from the cliffhanger ending of 2023’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning . The eighth movie in the acclaimed action franchise will be a direct sequel to the previous film for the first time in the series’ history, meaning fans of secret agents, Tom Cruise , and epic stunts will get to see how the story concludes when the as-yet-untitled film opens in the spring of next year. Before then, here’s everything you need to know about Mission: Impossible 8 . And don’t worry — this website will not self-destruct.

What Is the New  Mission: Impossible Movie Called?

Former title treatment for eighth Mission: Impossible film

Originally, this upcoming film was meant to be titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 . However, that subtitle has been scrapped. Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the movies, announced the title change in October 2023 along with the news that the movie’s release date was being delayed a year. The reason for this has not been explicitly stated, but Dead Reckoning — which you can retroactively strip of its “Part 1” moniker — underperformed at the box office when it came out in July 2023, and it’s possible the eighth Mission: Impossible is getting a different title because they don’t want to scare away potential audiences by explicitly marking it as the Part 2 to a Part 1 that moviegoers largely skipped.

Presumably, the next Mission: Impossible will get a cool subtitle before it comes out, as the last movie to simply be numbered was Mission: Impossible III . What that will be remains to be seen.

When Will It Be Released?

The eighth Mission: Impossible movie was originally supposed to have been shot, edited, and released years ago, with the original premiere date being August of 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both it and Dead Reckoning were significantly delayed. Mission: Impossible 8 was supposed to come out in June of 2024, but has since been delayed again to its current date of May 23, 2025.

This latest delay came as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which shut down production of the film in the summer of 2023. Filming resumed the following March.

Like all the previous Mission: Impossible entries, the eighth movie will premiere exclusively in theaters.

Who’s Directing It?

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Christopher McQuarrie , the director who took Mission: Impossible to new heights starting with Rogue Nation , the fifth film in the franchise, and continued with Fallout and Dead Reckoning after that, returns for the eighth movie. As with Dead Reckoning , McQuarrie co-wrote the movie with Erik Jendresen .

Who’s in It?

Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Tom Cruise will, of course, return to play IMF agent extraordinaire Ethan Hunt, who he first portrayed in 1996 when the original Mission: Impossible hit theaters. He’ll be 62 when the eighth Mission: Impossible movie premieres, and it’s possible that it will be his final appearance as the character, some 30 years later.

He’ll be joined by several returning cast members, including Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames as his fellow IMF agents Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell, respectively. Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Grace, a pickpocket who becomes embroiled in the action and eventually joins the IMF at the end of Dead Reckoning . Esai Morales returns as Dead Reckoning’ s primary villain, Gabriel, a man working on behalf of the all-powerful A.I. “Entity” that could doom the world. Also returning are Vanessa Kirby as black market arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis; Frederick Schmidt as her brother Zola; Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, a US Intelligence agent who spent the last movie trying to track Ethan Hunt down; Greg Tarzan Davis as his partner Degas; and Pom Klementieff as Paris, an assassin who defected from Gabriel’s employ after Ethan spared her life. Henry Czerny once more plays CIA director Eugene Kittridge, who made his return to the franchise in Dead Reckoning decades after playing the character in the first Mission: Impossible .

Esai Morales and Pom Klementieff in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Mark Gatiss and Charles Parnell are reported to reprise their small roles as the heads of the NSA and NRO, and Mariela Garriga will play a woman who appeared in mysterious flashbacks linking Ethan and Gabriel. Hopefully, this next movie will explain how they know each other.

Amusingly, Rolf Saxon , last seen in the franchise as hapless CIA agent William Donloe, who was transferred to Alaska as punishment for letting Ethan Hunt break in during the first Mission: Impossible , will make his return to the franchise.

Of course, there will be new additions to the cast, as well as returning actors from Dead Reckoning . Parks & Rec’ s Nick Offerman plays Sydney, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; The Iron Claw’ s Holt McCallany plays Bernstein, the Secretary of Defense; and Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham has an as-yet unrevealed role. Katy O’Brian , Janet McTeer , Lucy Tulugarjuk , and Tramell Tillman are also slated to appear.

What Happened in the Last  Mission: Impossible Film?

Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

In Dead Reckoning , Ethan and his team were on the hunt for two high-tech keys that were the only means to control a rogue, near-omnipotent AI system known as the Entity. Every organization and nation on Earth — including the United States — wants to be able to control the Entity, prompting Ethan to go rogue in an attempt to destroy the AI rather than risk letting it fall into anybody’s hands.

Ethan’s struggle to obtain the two keys to the Entity has him cross paths with Grace, a talented thief who is tasked with stealing the keys without fully knowing the implications. Gabriel, a man who has some sort of a past with Ethan, is looking for the keys, too, and he’s working directly for the Entity on its behalf. In the struggle for the keys during a botched sale at black-market arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis’ swanky Venice Party, Ilsa Faust ( Rebecca Ferguson ), former M16 agent and Ethan’s ally and possible love interest, is killed.

Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

In a last-ditch attempt to get both keys, Grace, now working with Ethan, impersonates Alanna on the Orient Express. Though this plan — and the train, literally — goes off the rails, Ethan is able to take possession of both keys from Gabriel, while the villain escapes. Ethan, Benji, and Luther are still going rogue, but Grace announces her intention to properly join the IMF. Meanwhile, Paris, an assassin who betrays Gabriel after Ethan saves her life, manages to tell Ethan what the keys to the Entity unlock. The AI’s intelligence is housed inside a sunken next-generation Russian submarine called the Sevastopol. Ethan’s next impossible mission? To find the Sevastopol, get inside it, and use the keys to destroy the Entity for good — unless Gabriel or anybody else stops him first.

And What Will Happen in the Next One?

Esai Morales and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (2023)

There hasn’t been an official synopsis for the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, but given that it’s the first direct sequel in franchise history, we have a decent idea of the plot. Ethan Hunt and his allies will attempt to defeat Gabriel and destroy the Entity once and for all. The final showdown will likely take place aboard the sunken Sevastopol, though since Ethan has no idea where the wreck is, discovering that information should drive the early plot.

We will learn more about the plot once official images, trailers, and of course a synopsis are released.

Will There Be More Mission: Impossible Movies After This?

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Dead Reckoning and this upcoming film were originally billed as a grand finale for the Ethan Hunt character. It seemed likely that the M:I franchise would continue in some form, but this could have been Cruise’s farewell. However, in June 2022, McQuarrie told Fandango that “Parts 1 & 2 are not the end of the series, and they already have ideas for what comes next.” Cruise similarly didn’t close the door during the press tour, even going so far as to say he hoped to continue making Mission: Impossible movies well into old age. Now, granted, this was before Dead Reckoning underperformed at the box office, but if the eighth Mission: Impossible is a hit, don’t be surprised if Ethan Hunt rides again.

How Long Will Mission: Impossible 8 Be?

The runtime for the eighth Mission: Impossible movie has not yet been revealed, as they have not finished making the movie. For comparison’s sake, Dead Reckoning was 163 minutes long — the longest in the franchise by a significant margin, as the rest of the movies are more or less in the 130-minute range.

Are there any trailers for it?

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

There are no trailers for Mission: Impossible 8 yet because they are not done making the movie.

However, it seems likely that we’ve gotten a peek at some of the action. At the 2022 CinemaCon, the premiere of the first Dead Reckoning trailer was preceded by a clip of Cruise chilling on a biplane, introducing the trailer, and then jumping off. He and director McQuarrie were filming in South Africa at the time, and since no sequence like that appeared in Dead Reckoning , consider this the closest thing we have to a sneak preview.

And Is Tom Cruise Still Doing His Own Stunts for It?

Tom Cruise performing a stunt in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (2023)

Is that a serious question? Of course Tom Cruise, who famously rode a motorcycle off a cliff for Dead Reckoning , is doing his own stunts for the sequel. Please see above.

Mission: Impossible 8 is currently scheduled to open in theaters on May 23, 2025.

The editor of Top Gun: Maverick  says that Tom Cruise's stunts in Mission: Impossible 8 will be "historic." Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Part 1  and Part 2 were initially slated to film back-to-back, but the plan was altered due to pandemic delays. After main filming wrapped on Mission Impossible 7 , production began on Mission Impossible 8 (with a short break in-between), gearing up for a delayed release in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Writer and director Christopher McQuarrie is helming both sequels, with star Tom Cruise back as superspy IMF agent Ethan Hunt, once again tackling a globe-spanning impossible mission with high-wire stunts performed largely by the actor himself.

While the first  Mission: Impossible 7  trailer was released alongside  Top Gun: Maverick 's debut, it featured very little dialogue or context as to what the story would be about. However, the trailer did feature the host of actors involved in the film, including regulars like Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ving Rhames, as well as Henry Czerny, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Cary Elwes. It's been reported that these last two chapters of the Mission: Impossible franchise will serve as a send-off for Cruise's character, who will have played the character over the course of 28 years by the time Mission Impossible 8 releases.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant , editor Eddie Hamilton talked about his work on the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning sequels. While giving an update on the films' progress, Hamilton said that some of the stunts Cruise performs in Mission Impossible 8 are "historic."  The editor spent three months in South Africa earlier this year, while Cruise filmed for the sequel's third act. Read his comments below:

"Again, collaborating with Tom [Cruise] and Chris McQuarrie every day on that sequence to keep evolving it and making it better and better and, I swear, some of the stuff he’s doing, I mean, it’s historic, man. I’m not exaggerating. You’re going to watch it and you’re going to go, y’know, Tom’s done it again. He has done it again. And, it is amazing to have a ringside seat to that stuff, honestly." Hamilton went on to liken some of the sequences in the film to the canyon scene in Top Gun: Maverick , saying, "There’s going to be some moments in Mission 8 where you have that same kind of, 'I can’t believe I’m seeing this' experience. Two years to go and you’ll see it."

Hamilton also confirmed that both Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were still filming, so there is still work being done on the seventh chapter of the franchise, despite principal photography being complete. Cruise recently shared an update on the production of Mission Impossible 8 at the 2022 CinemaCon event. There, the star was seen attached to a biplane and being flown upside down; a stunt that will apparently be a part of Mission Impossible 8 in some capacity. Hamilton said that, while the films will be down to the wire in terms of meeting their new release dates, there will be no compromise on the quality of the action sequences and stunts, which Cruise is famous for. The editor teased that the Mission Impossible sequel will be  "another extraordinary barnstorming moviegoing experience."

After the phenomenal success of Cruise's  Top Gun: Maverick (for which Cruise also performed his own death-defying stunts), there's no denying that the hype will now grow even stronger for both Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 . Having Maverick break box office records for Cruise is proof that the star is still a huge box office draw, making the next two chapters in the Mission: Impossible franchise incredibly well-timed. With Cruise continually pushing the limits from film to film, it sounds like Mission: Impossible 8 's stunts may well provide the perfect finish for his tenure on the franchise, if it is indeed his final bow as Ethan Hunt.

Is Tom Cruise performing a stunt at the Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony?

The "mission impossible" star may be taking on his most high-profile feat yet — if rumors are true., by danielle abreu • published august 9, 2024 • updated on august 11, 2024 at 4:41 am.

From scaling a skyscraper to hanging on to the side of an airplane taking off, actor Tom Cruise is no stranger to death-defying stunts.

Back in March, Cruise was spotted with a film crew at the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, scaling the famous landmark, People reported at the time . He was also captured on video appearing to pass a flag to someone. A spokesperson for Cruise did not respond to the outlet's requests for comment on what the actor was filming.

In late April, he was also spotted on the streets of Paris riding a motorcycle at night, before official filming for his latest "Mission Impossible" movie began. At the time, he was spotted with a film crew and carrying a white flag near the Saint-Georges metro station, the Pont de Bir-Hakeim and around the Arc de Triomphe.

This week, French media reported that Cruise, who is currently in Europe filming “Mission: Impossible 8” and has been spotted in the stands at several Paris Olympic events, including artistic gymnastics, swimming and track & field, will perform a stunt at the Closing Ceremony, which is set to take place at the Stade de France. Part of his performance will include pre-taped scenes.

With the next Summer Games set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028, a Hollywood connection seems fitting for an Olympic handoff from Paris.

However, organizers in Paris are tight-lipped on confirming any names, only saying it will feature “world-famous performers” along with “acrobats, dancers and circus artists.”

"An original soundtrack, new interpretations, musical performances and the participation of world-renowned singers will complete the picture," Paris organizers said in a statement. "Part of the show will take place in the air, while the giant sets, costumes and spectacular lighting effects will take spectators on a journey through time, both past and future."

One performer that has been announced is H.E.R. The five-time Grammy winner is expected to sing the U.S. national anthem live at the Stade de France as part of the handover for the Los Angeles Summer Games.

We'll have to wait until Sunday, Aug. 11 to see who's-who among the star-studded celebrity spectacles. The Closing Ceremony will start at 3 p.m. ET/Noon PT at the Stade de France.
