Star Trek Merch: TNG And ‘Lower Decks’ CCGs Announced, Dr. Bashir 12″ Figure Revealed, And More

Looks like a Star Trek Fleet Command

I wish either the announcement video or the website gave more information. I assume it’s a 4X game, but I wonder if it is “real time” (with maybe a time dilation option) or turn based?

Since it’s made by the same developers as Stellaris, and they’ve kept most of the game elements the same, I would assume it’s real time

It’s not by the same devs, only the same publisher. Stellaris was developed by Paradox’s internal studio, while Infinite is being developed by Nimble Giant Entertainment.

The New Horizons mod for Stellaris is sooo similar to this. Makes sense as Stellaris hails from some of the same people as this game.

But if anyone wants a similar fix, I heartily recommend it. You start in Archer’s time and they’ve painstakingly added a ton of species, planets, details, and missions from every show.

It looks like any generic 4x game that could have been released 10-15 years ago….. Comparing this to Homeworld *sigh*

Lmao this is LITERALLY a Star Trek Stellaris! Look at the u.i., the fonts, the character images, the system view… it’s almost the same game xD

This is fine by me, however, because I’d rather have an official licensed Star Trek product than Stellaris with a Star Trek mod. I guess that Trek mod was popular enough for Paradox to see $ signs!

Why rather a licensed product than a Mod?

The New Horizons mod isn’t 100% perfect, but the love and time put into it is palpable, and it’s still being updated to this day. It’s a total conversion with well-written missions pulled from all the shows and films, lovely ship models right down to most of the one-off aliens across all 4 quadrants, most major characters coming in as Leaders, far more than 4 Empire races you can play as, flagship Enterprises you build and decommission at Utopia Planitia, great music choices, updated UI and SFX and every opportunity to hew to how the stories unfolded or take your own path… It’s really well done.

An official version of this will have better graphics and faster load times and be more streamlined, but it won’t have the same depth of experience and variety. Not until it gets its own mods.

Nothing says Star Trek like a war game

Then play it diplomatically then, it’s an option in these games.

Deep Space Nine says hi :)

It’s a 4x strategy game, you can totally win peacefully

This reminds me of Star Trek Armada series.

Is it Armada? Is it BOTF? Is it maybe a mix of both?

More BotF than Armada, as it’s a grand strategy title, based heavily in Stellaris from the Steam description (and from the same publisher).

This more era focused version of the New Horizons mod for Stellaris. Probably my favourite game by far. I love 4X and Star Trek and this is great fun. I can’t imagine this will be any better than that…but, take my money…

Oh look Birth of the Federation…

I don’t know – I have to say the “Star Trek Armada III” mod for “Sins of a Solar Empire” looks far better than this.

I love Stellaris, just wish had more time to play. Just wish they had more of the license that we could get the great exploration years with TOS style ships, TMP movie era ships, try to quickly skip the ugly TNG era to get to neo-Connies lol That being said loved Stellaris that will probably get this, even though will have no time to play (like Stellaris)

all those systems listed in the side bar remind of the old classic Star Wars Rebellion

Not the Right Type of Horror...

Paradox is publishing a Star Trek grand strategy game and I am vibrating with anticipation

Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck.

Big Geoff's Summer Game Fest offered few surprises this year, but I definitely wasn't expecting to see a Star Trek grand strategy game published by Paradox. Star Trek: Infinite is being developed by Nimble Giant Entertainment, the studio behind the latest Master of Orion 4X, and is due this autumn.

Set in the decades before the TNG era, Infinite will let would-be conquerors and diplomats take control of the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union and Klingon Empire. Paradox and Nimble Giant haven't given much away, but we can expect each faction to boast "individualized traits, stories, quests and more to make their play feel distinct".

Weirdly, the Borg Collective seems to be involved, too, and we can see a Federation fleet bumping into a Borg Cube in the teaser. What's odd about this is that the Federation didn't properly clash with the Collective until after Q introduced the Enterprise to them in TNG. Of course, Star Trek is full of time travel nonsense and alternative realities, so maybe that's what we're seeing here.

I wasn't really blown away by the latest Master of Orion (though it was absolutely better than MoO 3) and confess I'd be a bit more excited if Paradox was developing instead of just publishing, but I'm going to be uncharacteristically optimistic because I desperately want a great Star Trek strategy game.

Technically, this isn't the first Star Trek offering that Paradox has been involved with. Star Trek: New Horizons is a total conversion mod for Stellaris, and probably my favourite mod of all time, leveraging the sci-fi grand strategy romp's 'everything and the kitchen sink' approach to create a game that's absolutely gargantuan, ambitious and true to Star Trek.

With Infinite's focus on only four factions, it sounds like a much slighter game, but that focus could also be a boon, allowing Nimble Giant to flesh out the Federation and its adversaries a lot more. We'll be finding out more on Picard Day, which most people call June 16.

Paradox's grand strategy Star Trek game releases this October

Stellar(is) work

Paradox have announced that Star Trek: Infinite is coming out on October 12th. Infinite’s previous trailers already made it look like a " Stellaris in a different version of space" affair - which is by no means an unfavourable comparison - and the latest footage shows off more grand strategy shenanigans. Planet management. Lotsa menus. Expanding factions, sometimes peacefully if you prefer a clear conscience.

Cover image for YouTube video

Star Trek: Infinite begins decades before The Next Generation, so never mind the TNG-era characters plastered on the game’s official artwork for now. I’m guessing that decades will pass while we build colonies and explore the stars, eventually syncing us up with those wrinkled TNG foreheads we know so well.

That’s an interesting period to explore, but in true grand strategy fashion, you’ll be able to build your own story too. Infinite plonks you in the captain's chair and asks you to lead one of the universe’s four major factions: The Klingon Empire, United Federation Of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, or Cardassian Union. Each faction has its own traits for interstellar expansion and unique quests.

While Paradox built their other 4X-in-space juggernaut in-house, they’re only on publishing duties with Star Trek: Infinite. Development is being led by Nimble Giant Entertainment, the studio behind time-looping shooter Quantum League and 2016’s Master Of Orion reboot. Our Master Of Orion review was mixed at launch, but the developers seem to have stuck with the game as it’s since climbed up to a ‘Mostly Positive’ rating on Steam. Paradox are (sometimes infamously) known for supporting games for the long haul with free patches and/or paid expansions, but we’ll need to wait to see how literal the “Infinite” title is in this case.

Should you want a taste of Star Trek grand strategy right this second, mods have you covered. The New Horizons mod already painted Stellaris over with a Star Trek-coloured coat of paint and we called the effort “pretty special.” There are probably several other Trek-related mods floating around the internet’s void as well.

Star Trek: Infinite releases on Steam on October 12th. I’m sad to say that the cool Klingon VO pack is locked as a pre-order bonus, though.

'total war: pharaoh' and 'star trek: infinite': boldly going where we've been before.

Set your strategy adventure in either the shifting sands or the sci-fi stars.

Total War: Pharaoh and Star Trek: Infinite both come out this week. Developed by two of the biggest names in strategy gaming, Paradox Interactive and Creative Assembly, both offer deep strategy experiences steeped in past designs.

Total War: Pharaoh

Outgunned, outmanned, outnumbered, out-planned.

That became my fight song of despair when a horde of invading "Sea Peoples" attacked one of my core cities on the Mediterranean coast. The attacker's numbers were nearly double that of my meager garrisoned forces inside the city gates. Unable to run, muster reinforcements, or even auto-resolve the battle, I settled in to guide my soldiers to their inevitable defeat, taking as many of the enemy with me as possible.

To my surprise, 20 minutes later, I watched the invading forces beat an ignominious retreat.

My mighty victory earned my fledgling nation a few legitimacy points towards taking the Egyptian throne.

After flirting with high fantasy , Creative Assembly and SEGA have returned the Total War grand strategy franchise to its historical roots with Total War: Pharaoh . Set in the Bronze Age, players can contest the title of either Pharaoh or King of the Hittites , a rival empire based in what is now Turkey and Syria. The goal, as always, is conquest, but much of the game can be won in the royal court, where players can use political actions to gain legitimacy, discredit other faction leaders on the court, or even assassinate the sitting ruler.

As with other Total War games, the stability of your cities suffer if you fail to balance your resources. But this element has been simplified to a fault. Often after moving an army and choosing my court actions for that turn, I was baffled that there wasn't anything else for me to do before ending the turn. At a certain point in the game, cities and resources basically run themselves, which Creative Assembly claims is an improvement on other Total War games, but it really feels like a downgrade.

The Total War franchise made a name for itself with huge, real-time battles, and thankfully this latest version delivers. You can now arrange your hundreds of individual soldiers into different stances, including "Give Ground," which allows units to slowly back up while still facing the enemy. Like any commander, you also have to keep a close eye on the weather, which can transform the battlefield without much warning.

Altogether, it makes for a much more immersive, but slower experience than previous Total War games. So slow, in fact, that I often pushed for the "Auto-Resolve" button to skip easy battles. That's not to say that drawn-out skirmishes couldn't be engaging. I felt like a tactical genius when I turned the inexorable tide of invading "Sea Peoples" and saved my coastal city. Like the barbarians in Total War: Rome, this ambiguous historical group brings a climactic crisis to the late-game.

Ultimately, Total War: Pharaoh satisfied the historical grand strategist in me. If you've got the patience for its slow tactics and stripped-down strategy, its undeniably beautiful presentation could attract new players to this admittedly niche genre.

Star Trek: Infinite

It's a good time to be a Star Trek fan. Earlier this year, the spin-off Star Trek: Picard gave the icon and his aging compatriots a send-off worthy of the legendary Star Trek: The Next Generation . Then, as NPR's Eric Deggans wrote earlier this summer, the excellent Star Trek: Strange New Worlds succeeded by embracing the franchise's righteous, light-hearted legacy rather than shying away from it. Even Star Trek: Lower Decks , the adult animated comedy about goofy peons on a mediocre starship, earned praise from critics and hardcore fans alike. It's the perfect time for a new video game to capitalize on the new wave of revitalized nostalgia.

Choose your faction wisely, as it determines your starting position and what technology is available to you.

Enter Star Trek: Infinite , the real-time grand strategy game from Paradox Interactive, Nimble Giant Entertainment, and Paramount, set after the events of The Next Generation. You'll lead one of four factions — Romulan, Cardassian, Klingon, or Federation — expand your collection of planets and protect them from outside threats. Unknown star systems and colonizable planets must first be analyzed by your science ships before you can claim them (and their resources), though some of their climates are more hospitable than others.

As with other grand strategy games, balancing your faction's resources is a delicate art, and can be instantly thrown off by your own myopic actions or by events beyond your control. Diplomacy, too, is fickle: Star Trek: Infinite contains dozens of minor factions along with the core four, each with competing demands and various levels of hostility.

If you think this description sounds suspiciously like Paradox Interactive's Stellaris with a Star Trek Prime Directive attached, you're not wrong. The mechanics of advancing your faction and winning the game (militarily, economically, or diplomatically) are nearly identical, and fans of Stellaris will recognize the game's style in Infinite's assets and artwork.

Star Trek: Infinite is a faithful reproduction of the Star Trek universe circa The Next Generation , including the neutral zone separating the Romulans from the Federation.

That's not to say that there aren't meaningful differences. Star Trek: Infinite adds faction-specific hero units like the Federation's U.S.S. Enterprise-D, and allows players to send starships on "missions" to advance diplomatic relations with opposing factions and earn specific rewards. But these units, disappointingly, come almost exclusively from Star Trek: The Next Generation (though players who pre-ordered gain access to Lower Decks ' U.S.S. Cerritos), and the mission mechanic is mostly copied from Stellaris' research events.

As somebody who has spent an embarrassing amount of hours playing Stellaris, I felt at ease playing Star Trek: Infinite. But as a Star Trek fan, I couldn't help but feel like the game was missing some of the franchise's utopian optimism. Yes, you can send your starships out to discover new worlds and assist friendly nations, but the Stellaris warp drive that powers the game encourages conquest and expansion — an ambition totally out of step with the original show creator's vision . If Trekkies can stand that cognitive dissonance, they'll find a home in Star Trek: Infinite, but experienced grand strategy gamers might find it too familiar for comfort.

Always in motion is the future of the Star Wars universe... at least when it comes to movies and television , where well more than half of the projects currently in development still have no publicly available release date . The world of Star Wars tabletop games, on the other hand, is a bit more predictable. Both this year and last, it seems like new releases have been coming down the Pyke just about every few months. Taken together with some excellent older titles still in print, it’s clear to me that we’re living in a golden age of Star Wars board games — especially if you roll in card games, TTRPGs, and miniatures games as well. Here are the very best ones.

Best Star Wars board game — Star Wars: Rebellion

Y-Wings and X-Wings line up on a Executor-class Super Star Destroyer backed by a Death Star and TIE fighters. Admiral Piett looks on.

Corey Konieczka has had a hand in loads of great Star Wars-themed board games, including the Star Wars: Imperial Assault dungeon crawler and the popular Star Wars: Destiny dice and card game. But his crowning achievement with the license is the epic strategy game called Star Wars: Rebellion . For fans of the original trilogy, it simply doesn’t get any better than this.

Cracking open the big, square Fantasy Flight Games box, you’ll first encounter more than 150 tiny plastic miniatures, all cast into the shapes of familiar Star Wars vehicles. Next come the 25 character standees, representing everyone from Princess Leia to Grand Moff Tarkin. The gang’s all here and ready to rock, and the setlist contains nothing less than the greatest space battles in franchise history — fleet-cracking engagements like the Battles of Yavin, Hoth, and Endor.

At its core, Star Wars: Rebellion is a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek. One player takes on the role of the evil Empire, searching relentlessly for the hidden Rebel base. Meanwhile, the Rebel player builds up their strength while launching daring hit-and-run raids on Imperial interests all across the galaxy.

Just to give you a sense of the scale involved in these battles, the game contains not one, not two, but three miniature Death Stars, all of which can be brought to bear if the Empire plays their cards right. It’s a knock-down, drag-out fight for galactic domination with a delicate ruleset that all but promises a blowout fight at the end. Just be prepared to spend two or three hours at the table.

Best Star Wars TCG — Star Wars: Unlimited

An assortment of cards from the Luke Skywalker starter deck near several kyber crystals and a lightsaber.

Star Wars: Unlimited surprised me when I first played it at Gen Con in 2023 . The trading card game is quick and punchy, with two lanes for combat — one in space and one on the ground — that provide for interesting player choices. Do you go all-in on vehicles to wear down your opponent, or do you strike quickly with powerful character abilities? Ultimately the choice is yours, both in the development of your custom deck and in responding to the random cards that show up in your hand once the game begins.

But where Star Wars: Unlimited truly showed its mettle is inside its booster boxes filled with packs of random cards. I find TCGs to be extremely intimidating, both in their theming and their rules. But this game excels at graphic design, yielding cards that are easy to read and easy to organize into winning decks. Toss in a smattering of gorgeous alternate art cards to chase, and it’s one heck of a compelling card game.

Note that because the game was only recently released, stock is fairly limited at this time . If you simply must shuffle up and play a Star Wars-themed card game, you can’t go wrong with Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game , another excellent yet mechanically unrelated offering from Fantasy Flight.

Best Star Wars miniatures game — Star Wars: Shatterpoint

A miniature Jango Fett, blasters raised as in his final moments in the prequel films. The brushwork is invisible, and the higlights are sharp and crisp.

Atomic Mass Games, a newer imprint of Asmodee’s ever-growing stable of development studios, was lucky enough to inherit Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game just after its 2.0 relaunch. While that larger fandom continued chewing on its adjustments, the studio also began cooking up a high-concept miniatures skirmish game called Star Wars: Shatterpoint . The result is a smash hit, one supported by a laundry list of excellent expansions.

I first encountered Star Wars: Shatterpoint at AdeptiCon 2023 , where the team at Atomic Mass was just getting ready for Star Wars Celebration in London . The gorgeous game features larger-than-average miniatures, meaning they’re a lot easier to paint. Better still, a viable squad only requires a handful of little plastic figures — around three to five on each side of the table. That means you’ll spend less time clipping, gluing, and painting and more time playing matches with your friends.

And the gameplay itself is excellent, with thematically distinct units from all across the history of the franchise. From the Bad Batch to militant teddy bears , masters to apprentic e s , there’s something here for everybody.

Best Star Wars tabletop role-playing game — Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Game

Cover art for Edge of the Empire shows some scoundrels in a speeder taking down stormtroopers on the move.

The current iteration of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game can look pretty intimidating from the outside — especially given that it uses custom dice and a uniquely story-focused system that won’t play nicely with standard math rocks. But by far the hardest part of getting started is making sense of the game’s more than 50 sourcebooks . Those run the gamut from the Age of Rebellion series, which details settings and plot hooks from the original trilogy, to the Force & Destiny series, with lots of resources for building high-powered Jedi and other Force users.

For new players, however, the clearest point of entry is the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game , a boxed set with a simplified core rulebook, pregenerated characters, a set of those funky dice, and a starting adventure. The Edge of the Empire product line is my favorite subset of the SWRPG. They give games a feel more in line with the gritty, localized personal stories of The Mandalorian rather than the chaotic, galaxy-wide adventure of movies like The Phantom Menace . Those sourcebooks lay out stats, abilities, gear, and so forth for games centering on bounty hunters, smugglers, explorers, mercenaries, and other fringe-dwellers. They give you plenty of details on playing all those scum-and-villainy types who don’t fit into the pat, standard Jedi-versus-Sith or Rebels-versus-Empire dynamics.

In other words, it’s the area of the game where you get to play the most colorful characters, with the most variety, the most personal stakes, and the most room for creative play in all the corners of the Star Wars galaxy that the movies and TV shows have mostly ignored until recently. Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Game is a very simplified introduction to that product line, but it’s a good launch point for understanding how the Star Wars Roleplaying Game works, and why its system is easy to pick up and full of story-generating nuance that goes far beyond the usual “succeed or fail” game mechanics. —Tasha Robinson
