Everything old is new again, so naturally, ice facials have risen in popularity — this time with a more luxurious routine and the tools to match.

Whereas we once depuffed our skin with ice cubes, newly popularized ice rollers for the face have made the ice facial more convenient than ever. Simply store the handheld tool in the fridge or freezer (we love skincare fridges for hygienic storage), and gently roll the tool across your face to instantly calm inflammation, soothe headaches, and give your skin a natural glow.

Benefits of Facial Ice Rollers

“Using an ice roller on your face can help reduce puffiness, especially around the eyes and cheeks. The cold temperature constricts blood vessels, reducing swelling and inflammation. They can also be great for improving blood circulation and giving your skin a healthy, rosy glow.” — Renée Rouleau , celebrity esthetician and skincare founder

You don’t need to go to the spa for a fancy cryofacial. We tested 21 facial ice rollers, and these nine earned themselves a permanent spot in our beauty routines.

Best Overall

Quiet hours facial ice roller.

Stainless steel barrel stays very cold

Comes with a silicone cover for hygienic storage

Instantly calms puffy and inflamed skin

Less expensive than others we tried

Some may prefer a larger roller

Say hello to your new favorite face tool. The Quiet Hours roller features a stainless steel barrel that will stay colder longer, plus a silicone cover to keep it protected in the freezer. The ergonomic handle makes maneuvering the roller easier, so you can depuff and reduce inflammation with ease. It was easy to use in tandem with our favorite face oil or high-quality moisturizer , though we often used it alone for instant depuffing and makeup prep.

Roller Material: Stainless steel | Key Benefits: Reduces puffiness, calms redness, tightens skin

People / Samantha Stevenson

Best Overall (Cheaper)

Skin gym cryoroll ice facial.

No-frills approach to depuffing

Reduces breakouts, fine lines, and swelling

Easy to hold and apply

Ice will melt as you use it, so have a towel handy

The Skin Gym CryoRoll Ice Facial takes the old-school ice-cube facial to the next level. Just fill the silicone packaging with water, pop it in the freezer, and be ready to depuff in the morning. When it freezes, you’ll be left with a round block of ice that you can apply straight to the face, which we found to be a gentle alternative to more high-tech rollers. The silicone base is easy to hold, even as the ice begins to melt. We immediately noticed tighter and smoother skin, and over time, we saw a reduction in breakouts and fine lines.

Roller Material: Ice | Key Benefits: Refreshes, depuffs, shrinks pores

People / Carly Lubsen

Best Sculpting

Aceology ice globe facial massagers.

We noticed more defined cheekbones and jawlines over time

Soothes skin and massages sinus area

May be tricky to use for beginners

Sometimes tugs or pulls on the skin

The Aceology Ice Globe Facial Massager leveled up our morning routine, thanks to the soothing massage that left our skin and sinuses feeling great. While the tools were a bit awkward to use, we got the hang of them after a few uses. We saw decreased puffiness after each use, though we were most impressed by the long-term results — over four weeks, we noticed increased definition along our jaw and cheekbones. If you’re a skincare expert looking to incorporate some tools into your routine, the Aceology Ice Globe is one to watch.

Roller Material: Glass | Key Benefits: Firms complexion, shrinks pores, reduces the appearance of fine lines

People / Rachel Shalla

Best for Mornings

Plum beauty cooling facial tool set.

Cool sensation is a soothing addition to our morning routine

Soothes irritated skin and provides pain relief

Comes with two tools

Cheaper than others we tried

We didn’t notice any depuffing during use

For a quick skin refresh, it doesn’t get much simpler than the Plum Beauty rollers. Store the glass tools in the fridge for when you need to soothe irritated skin, calm inflammation, or wake yourself up in the morning. We love the ergonomic shape of the tools, which allow you to massage the contours of the face with ease. While we didn’t notice major de-puffing benefits, we loved using these tools to wake ourselves up and for migraine relief. And at less than $20, this is one of the cheapest tools we’ve tried.

Roller Material: Glass | Key Benefits: Reduces under-eye circles, calms inflammation, refreshes skin, helps lymphatic drainage

People / Kathleen Tenefrancia

Best for Migraine Relief

Latme ice roller.

Calms inflamed skin

Soothes headaches, fevers, and even sore muscles

Cheaper than others on our list

We didn’t notice tightened or depuffed skin

This roller relieves fatigue, soothes pain, and revitalizes the complexion at a fraction of the cost of our other favorites. We use it first thing in the morning or for instant relief when we have a fever or headache. We appreciate that the tool doesn’t get too cold or irritating and that it never pulls or tugs on the skin. The plastic barrel also pops out for easy freezing and cleaning.

Roller Material: Plastic | Key Benefits: Calms skin, relieves fatigue, soothes migraines and muscle pain

People / Dera Burreson

Best for Beginners

Maange ice roller.

Immediately soothes and depuffs the face

The barrel warmed up quickly

We wish the roller was a bit sturdier

The Maange Ice Roller is perfect for beginners looking for basic depuffing benefits. The roller features a simple design, with a plastic handle and plastic barrel wrapped in stainless steel. We found that the roller didn’t stay as cold as some of our other stainless steel picks, so it’s best suited for shorter self-care sessions. The roller depuffs well for its price; however, if you’re looking to shrink pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines, this might not be your perfect match.

Roller Material: Plastic and stainless steel | Key Benefits: Reduces puffiness, soothes redness

People / Courtney Thompson

Best Large Roller

The skinny confidential hot mess ice roller.

Hefty, high-quality materials

Depuffs and shrinks pores

Aluminum roller gets super cold

Large roller means less precise movement

Warms up quickly, and takes a while to cool again

Some prefer a larger roller to make depuffing in the morning even quicker. The Skinny Confidential roller has a wide barrel that covers a broader surface area on the face and a thick silicone handle that makes it easy to grip. The aluminum barrel gets super cold in the freezer, so we like to warm it on our hands before applying it to the face. The wide barrel isn’t great for precise maneuvering, so if your priority is depuffing the undereyes, this might not be the roller for you.

Roller Material: Aluminum | Key Benefits: Calms puffiness and redness, boosts circulation, reduces pores, helps with lymphatic drainag

People / Sophia DeVito

Best Large Roller (Cheaper)

Kitsch ice roller.

Ergonomic shape makes it easy to hold and roll

Large roller makes for a quick application

Slightly depuffs without causing any irritation

We didn’t notice any reduction in fine lines

The Kitsch ice roller features a larger shape, along with a stainless steel barrel like the Stacked Skincare and Quiet Hours rollers. While the stainless steel gets very cold in the freezer, we didn’t find the temperature at all shocking or irritating when applied to the skin. We noticed slight depuffing, though the results were not dramatic — if you experience intense inflammation, this might not be the roller for you. We appreciated the large shape that makes for quick application, along with the ergonomic handle that makes it easy to hold and use.

Roller Material: Stainless steel | Key Benefits: Calms inflammation, relieves sore muscles and headaches

Best Splurge

Stacked skincare ice roller & massager.

Reduces inflammation, shrinks pores, and stops breakouts

Stainless steel ensures the roller stays cold

Wide handle makes it easy to grip

Silicone cover keeps roller clean in the freezer

Pricier than others on our list

The Stacked Skincare ice roller is the luxurious sister to the Quiet Hours roller. The designs are nearly identical, with stainless steel barrels, plastic handles, and silicone covers to protect the tool from damage and germs. One key difference sets this roller apart: the egg-shaped barrel allows for effortless maneuvering around the eyes and contours of the face. It’s the priciest on our list, but one of the best facial tools we’ve used. If you’re looking to treat yourself to an at-home spa experience, we recommend you indulge in the Stacked Skincare roller.

Roller Material: Stainless steel | Key Benefits: Calms inflammation, acne, and puffiness, soothes sensitive skin, helps with lymphatic drainage

What to Know About Facial Ice Rollers

As the cold surface of an ice roller touches the skin, blood vessels constrict and inflammation is soothed, according to Jan Marini , founder of skincare brand Jan Marini Skin Care Research. She tells PEOPLE that icing may also help with lymphatic drainage, which reduces swelling.

But ice rollers may not be for everyone. We recommend you start with short icing sessions to ensure the ice roller won’t irritate your skin. Different experts recommend a routine of anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes; it comes down to what works best for you.

Experts Say

“It is important to remember that not everyone is a good candidate for icing,” Marini says. “Some individuals, such as those with rosacea, may experience increased redness because of their skin’s reactive nature. Others may find that their skin is more dry or irritated.”

When to Use

Our experts agree that using an ice roller after applying your skincare will help your skin soak up all of those high-quality ingredients. Massage the face with an ice roller after applying your favorite skincare products (read: the best niacinamide serums we tested). You can also apply the ice roller to a fresh, clean face for anti-inflammatory benefits. We tried both methods and loved them equally.

Types of Cold Therapy

Facial rollers and ice globes are the newest iterations of a decades-old trend. (“Celebrities such as Joan Crawford are said to have iced their faces every day in the 1930s, '40s, and ‘50s,” Marini tells PEOPLE.) While we love incorporating cold therapy with the help of ice roller tools, there are many ways to adopt the technique.

“Cold therapy for skin has been around for decades, previously done with ice cubes, chilled spoons, or cold compresses,” Rouleau says.

“Similarly, I like to make toner ice cubes . Instead of a basic ice roller, I prefer to freeze a hydrating essence (generally in a small plastic cup or ice cube tray) and massage this into my skin whenever I need a boost,” Rouleau says. “These not only provide the benefits of reduced puffiness and increased circulation but also help with serum absorption. When you apply the serum and then glide the toner ice cube over your face, the cold temperature causes the capillaries to constrict. This creates a vacuum effect that may help pull the serum deeper into the skin’s layers, increasing its effectiveness.”

How to Use an Ice Roller

Renée Rouleau shares how to incorporate ice rollers and globes into your skincare routine.

  • “Start by thoroughly cleansing your face, making sure it’s free of makeup, dirt, and impurities.
  • Apply your favorite hydrating and nourishing serum.
  • Take your ice roller (or toner ice cube) and gently glide it over your skin for 10-20 seconds, using light, upward motions. Be sure to cover your entire face.
  • Finish your skincare routine by applying moisturizer to lock in hydration and keep your skin soft and supple.”

Behind the Scenes

The PEOPLE Tested team tried 21 ice rollers over a testing period of four weeks. Testers used the respective product daily over this testing period to depuff their skin. After four weeks, the testers evaluated their tools based on ease of use, effectiveness, quality, and overall results.

  • Ease of Use: Our favorite tools effortlessly fit into our morning routines. We docked points for tools that were awkward to hold or confusing to use and noted any tools that weren’t suited for beginners.
  • Effectiveness: Directly after using the tool, we evaluated the skin’s appearance to judge each tool against its claims. The best tools left our skin glowy, depuffed, and sculpted.
  • Quality: Premium materials and sturdy construction earned top marks in this category. The Stacked Skincare Roller and Quiet Hours Roller were the most impressive according to this criterion.
  • Overall Results: After four weeks, we compared before and after photos to identify any changes in our skin’s appearance. The best tools delivered long-term results: tighter, more sculpted skin after just a few weeks.

Each tester awarded their respective tool an overall rating based on whether they would personally recommend and repurchase the tool. After four weeks of daily use, the Quiet Hours Facial Roller proved to be the most effective tool, impressing us with its long-term results and high-quality construction.

Ahead, find the best ice roller for face massages and de-puffing skin, according to experts.

With three dermatologist recommendations, this award-winning ice roller takes the prize as as our best overall pick. Brendan Camp, M.D. , board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist at MDCS Dermatology , says stainless steel rollers are thought to stay colder longer than gel models. “This ice roller works to boost circulation and de-puff while also soothing the skin,” Dr. Garshick agrees. “It helps to relax muscle tension as well, and is great for the cheekbones.”

Blair Murphy-Rose, M.D., F.A.A.D. , board-certified cosmetic, medical, and surgical dermatologist at Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York , also recommends this roller for its egg-shaped barrel and ergonomic handle that allows for comfortable rolling. It comes at a more luxe price point, but the reviews and praise make it a promising choice.

This budget-friendly ice roller is a number one bestseller on Amazon , and for good reason. It has a detachable head for compact freezer storage and easy cleaning. It’s small enough to massage your face, but it can also be used to massage away back, neck, and leg pain. This highly-rated product is just $8, and you can choose from 14 color options.

“I recently purchased this ice face roller and it has been an evolution in my skincare routine. I use it in the morning before I hit the gym and it helps me with my puffy morning face,” writes one satisfied shopper. “When I use it at night I can feel how smooth my face becomes.”

This ice roller is a great option for people with sensitive skin as Dr. Camp says gel is a gentler material than other products. “Gel rollers, like this one, can be softer on the skin than a stainless steel model,” Dr. Camp. The large size makes it a great option for migraines, muscle cramps, and massaging the body, but you may want to opt for a smaller ice roller for the under-eye area. And for just $10.

This ice roller has a stainless steel head that claims to stay cold for up to two hours. It’s a bit larger than others on this list, which makes it a great option for icing and massaging sore arms and legs.

“This ice roller helps to improve blood circulation, de-puff, reduce swelling, and soothe redness,” Dr. Camp says. Dr. Garshick also recommends this travel-friendly and inexpensive ice roller for the face. Simply pop off the head for proper cleaning, and pop it in the freezer until next time.

Grace & Stella ice roller

“I love this [ice roller] because it has a detachable head for ease of use,” says Rachel Lee Lozina , licensed esthetician, laser technician, and oncology esthetician at Blue Water Spa in Oyster Bay, NY.

“When you freeze the head, the handle doesn’t become cold.”This cryotherapy tool says it’ll reduce swelling, redness, bloating, and irritation. If you’re not impressed, no worries; Grace & Stella has a 30-day Feel Good Policy that allows you to return it if you’re not 100% happy.

“This three-in-one set allows you to get near the delicate eye area and push out stagnated puffiness,” Lozina says. The different heads each serve their own purpose: use the small egg-shaped one to apply eye cream, the curved head to de-puff skin around the jawline, and the roller ball to massage under eyes for more de-puffing. Some reviewers even report the product being naturally cold before placing them in the fridge or freezer. Choose from silver or rose gold to match your aesthetic.

Lozina recommends this ice roller for facial massages. This product has the perfect shape for applying lotion or serums by massaging the face. Store it in the fridge for a cold facial massage, to reduce swelling, and de-puff your face.

“MonétBeauty Ice Globes are attractive and fun pink or teal glittery glass balls perfect for a budget-friendlier cryo massage,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. “They contain non-toxic antifreeze and are stored in the freezer to be ready for use. They do not freeze and emerge at a cool temperature.” These ice globes can be massaged upwards to promote skin lifting or downwards for a lymphatic massage and to drain sinuses.

“It offers a benefit of cold therapy, as well as massage and is battery-free making it convenient to use,” Dr. Garshick says. She advises using this ice roller on the undereye area and anywhere on the face to massage the area.

This affordable option even has the approval of actress Brie Larson, who shared with Vogue that it’s one of her “favorite things” and it is “heaven.” It’s available in 12 different colors with the option of buying both stainless steel and gel detachable heads. The product says it’ll tighten and smooth skin and boost lymph circulation.

“This stainless steel model is ideal for calming inflammation, contouring skin, and reducing puffiness,” Dr. Camp says. The large size may not be suitable for the under-eye area, but studies show that applying cold and massaging the head can help with migraines and chronic tension headaches. It comes in an aesthetically pleasing pink color and works to de-puff your skin and invigorate your face in the morning.

Cibluty Ice Globes Facial Massager

Ice Globes Facial Massager

“I personally prefer ice globes to ice rollers because they feel so nice on skin and can move in all directions with ease,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says.

These are available in five colors, and each order comes with two ice globes and a recyclable makeup remover pad. “[These are] made of smooth borosilicate glass that glides easily on skin for a chilled massage,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. “They calm with hand cushions for added comfort.” These globes can even be heated in hot water for a warm massage in the winter months when you are feeling congested.

BeautyBio GloPRO Cryo Roller Duo

GloPRO Cryo Roller Duo

“This stainless steel dual-ended cryo roller works to de-puff and tighten the skin,” Dr. Garshick says. “The two-sizes make for easy use for hard-to-reach areas, with the narrow end being better for areas around the eyes and brows. It helps to increase microcirculation and collagen production.”

Nurse Jamie Super-Cryo Massaging Orb

Super-Cryo Massaging Orb

These orbs come in a large or mini size, and the stainless steel ball can be placed in the freezer or in hot water for either a cold or warm facial massage (note: be careful not to burn skin when heating up steel). “These are easy to use and the rolling ball helps with lymphatic drainage,” Lozina says. Roll them in downward motions along your face to drain the lymph nodes and sinuses, or place the ball under your foot or leg to massage the body.

Floraison Magic Cooling Beauty Facial Sticks

Magic Cooling Beauty Facial Sticks

“For only $20, these are the best dupe for the Biologique Recherche Cryo sticks at a fraction of the price,” Lozina says. The cooling gel inside the stainless steel heads helps these facial sticks maintain icy cold temperatures for a long time. The unique shape will massage along the contours of your face and allow for a better massage.

BearKig Cold Ice Roller Massager

Cold Ice Roller Massager

This bestseller is available in four colors. The detachable head is great for storage and cleaning, and it’s the perfect size to massage the face along the jawline. The product claims to help with TMJ pain. Reviewers say it’s easy to use, stays cold for a long time, and helps with their puffy eyes every morning.

“I get pretty puffy in the mornings so I use this to reduce inflammation,” one customer writes. “I love the way it feels and how it tightens and de-puffs my skin. It feels very soothing and relieves stress.”

What are the benefits of using an ice roller for face?

line break

Lozina says ice rollers are a beneficial tool because ice reduces inflammation. “If you have a chronic inflammatory skin condition like acne, rosacea, or eczema, icing can help reduce the inflammatory process,” Lozina says. “Icing de-puffs, gives the appearance of glass skin, and calms acne. Icing should be done two-times a day, morning and night, to keep the histamine and inflammation at bay.”

These skincare tools are at-home, less intense versions of cryotherapy , which is a treatment process of applying extreme cold to the skin to remove abnormal tissue. Cryotherapy facials aim to boost circulation, tighten and lift skin, and de-puff —which a daily morning massage with an ice roller claims to do.

“Using an ice roller decreases inflammation and reduces puffiness by constricting blood vessels and pushing excess fluid away,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. “The physical pressure of the roller can improve lymphatic flow as well. There is a soothing and de-stressing effect to ice rollers as well.”

If you have mature skin, Lozina says some studies show that icing can stimulate collagen production. Lozina says ice rollers can calm down inflamed pustular acne.

How to choose the best ice roller

line break

Look at the materials: Most ice rollers come in stainless steel, gel, or glass. Stainless steel tends to hold cold for longer, but can be a bit pricier. Dr. Camp says gel is softer on skin and Dr. Murphy-Rose prefers ice globes, which are typically made from glass. Ultimately, the choice is up to your preference and budget.

Check the size: If you’re hoping to de-puff under-eyes or use the skincare tool to apply eye cream, opt for a smaller ice roller. On the flip side, if you want to massage your neck or legs in addition to your face, a larger ice roller will help you cover more territory.

Consider your skin type: Oilier skin types may benefit more from an ice roller. “Ice rollers can be used by people with oily skin to tighten pores and potentially minimize their appearance,” Dr. Camp says. “People with dry skin may want to use an ice roller in combination with a hydrating serum or apply a moisturizer after use.”

How do you use an ice roller?

line break

Each product will have its own unique instructions, but most recommend storing it in the fridge or placing the head in the freezer two hours before rolling. Once it is nice and cold, you can go ahead and massage it onto your face in outward and upward directions. “It is best to use in an upward motion and begin in the center and move outward,” Dr. Garshick says, who recommends using an ice roller for five to 10 minutes once or twice a day.

“Use the roller in gentle strokes starting from the middle and rolling out to the sides,” Dr. Murphy-Rose recommends. “That will help to promote lymphatic drainage.” Dr. Murphy-Rose recommends using your comfort level as a guide, and you can still reap the skin benefits of ice rollers by using one for just two minutes—which is much easier to squeeze into your morning routine.

Do ice rollers actually help skin?

In short, yes. “Ice rollers help to reduce swelling and puffiness by constriction of superficial blood vessels and encouraging lymphatic drainage,” Dr. Camp says. “They can help calm irritated skin, and reduce the appearance of background redness. Ice rollers also help relieve sensitivity or itching from skin conditions like rosacea or sunburn.”

Beyond daily skincare benefits, ice rollers can also help with de-puffing skin from allergic reactions and soothing bug bites. “I often recommend cooling as a way to combat itchy skin without scratching and causing destruction to the skin for conditions like eczema or bug bites,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. “Ice rolling is the perfect way to achieve this.”

Research has shown that facial massages can tighten and lift the skin, so performing a daily facial massage using an ice roller can help you reap these benefits. “Ice rolling also helps to boost circulation, allowing the skin to look more glowy and radiant,” Dr. Garshick says. One study found that massaging the face improved vascular dilation , which means there was more blood flow and circulation to the skin.

How often should I use an ice roller?

Dermatologists say you can use an ice roller every day, morning and/or night. “In the morning, ice rollers can help reduce puffiness that develops overnight while sleeping,” Dr. Camp says. “It can also help limit redness that can occur after a hot shower when blood vessels are more dilated. At night, ice rollers can be relaxing after a stressful day. They can also calm irritated skin after exposure to environmental stressor like UV radiation and pollution.”

Dr. Garshick says daily ice rolling is great for a de-puffing effect, or you can use it before big events to boost skin’s appearance. “It can be used for about five to 10 minutes one to two times per day or until you feel you have targeted the various areas you are looking to target,” she says.

While daily ice rolling is perfectly fine, Dr. Camp advises against using it in excess in a single treatment. “Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can potentially damage skin by causing an ice burn,” he says. Just make sure to only use it for the recommended amount of time in the instructions.

How do you use an ice face roller?

best lip liner

Using an ice face roller is easy and just takes a bit of prep. Here's what to do, according to Crumm:

  • Chill the Roller: Place the roller in the freezer for at least 15 minutes before use.
  • Preparation: Cleanse your face thoroughly.
  • Application: Start at the center of your face and roll outwards. Roll in an upward direction. Use gentle, even pressure and spend a little extra time around puffy areas like under the eyes. You can also use it on your neck in an upward motion. Continue for about 5-10 minutes.

What are the benefits of using an ice face roller?

Aside from just feeling good, there are a few major benefits for the skin. Here's why Crumm recommends using an ice face roller:

  • Reduces inflammation and puffiness: " The cold temperature helps constrict blood vessels, reducing swelling and puffiness, especially around the eyes," says the expert.
  • Soothes Irritation : Ice rolling "can calm redness and irritation from conditions like acne or rosacea," he says.
  • Tightens Pores: "The cold can help temporarily tighten [the look of] pores, giving the skin a smoother appearance."
  • Promotes Circulation: " Rolling increases blood flow to the face, promoting a healthy glow," says Crumm.

What are the risks of using an ice face roller?

There are some risks to be aware of when ice rolling. "Those with very sensitive skin or conditions like eczema might find the cold too harsh," says Crumm. In addition, the pro says to be careful not do do it for too long, as "Excessive use can potentially cause skin irritation or damage."

The 7 Best Face Rollers To Reduce Puffiness and Relax Tense Muscles

spicy travel ice roller

Face rollers—once limited to options made from stones—have since expanded beyond the jade roller to include variants made from materials like stainless steel, ones that shake and vibrate, and cryotherapy tools (see: ice rollers ). Whether they can truly “sculpt” your face is up for debate, but the best face rollers can go some way to assist in lymphatic movement, and subsequently reduce puffiness , albeit temporarily.

As board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green, MD , tells Well+Good, “Face rollers have long been touted as sculpting tools for the face and jawline. This claim is partially true, as they promote lymphatic drainage, leading to reduced puffiness and tighter, more contoured skin in the area. However, these effects are temporary and will disappear with discounted use of the face rollers.” Board-certified dermatologist Aanand Geria, MD, FAAD , echoes, “Facial shapes are mostly determined by genetics and muscle structure … These tools improve skin health, but their face- and jawline-sculpting results should be doubted.”

  • Aanand Geria, MD, FAAD , board-certified dermatologist and owner of Geria Dermatology
  • Michele Green, MD , board-certified dermatologist in New York City
  • Rhonda Klein, MD, MPH, FAAD , board-certified dermatologist and co-owner of Modern Dermatology of Connecticut
  • Stacy Chimento, MD , board-certified dermatologist at Riverchase Dermatology in Miami Beach, FL

In any case, there’s no denying that using a face roller can feel great. The rolling motion of the tool can help massage tense face muscles and promote relaxation—and, for some people, this is more than enough reason to incorporate it into a skin-care routine. There are many options to select from, but to help you find the very best options, I consulted Dr. Green and Dr. Geria, as well as board-certified dermatologist Rhonda Klein, MD, MPH, FAAD for tips on choosing a face roller.

What to consider when shopping for a face roller

When shopping for a face roller, first consider the material. You’ll typically come across options made from stone or stainless steel. “The most common stone materials used are jade and rose quartz, which hold their temperatures well,” says Dr. Klein. “If you store them in a cool place, they will stay cool while you roll your face—this can help in de-puffing.” Similarly, face rollers constructed out of stainless steel are naturally cool in temperature, and while often more costly than their counterpart, they offer additional benefits. For one, they are more durable. Secondly, according to Dr. Klein, “Metal is also less likely to harbor and hold onto bacteria that gathers on it.” That’s because unlike stone, stainless steel is a nonporous material—and it’s for this reason that she usually prefers the latter. Keep in mind that while “metal rollers are strong and simple to maintain,” says Dr. Geria, “they can heat up quickly, which could irritate or hurt delicate skin.”

As you shop, you’ll also want to consider the type of face roller you want to use. It’s common to see dual-ended face rollers that have a larger size for all over the face on one side and a smaller size for around the eyes on the other. However, you might also come across face rollers with two orbs, much like the Skin Gym Face Sculptor Beauty Roller , which kneads the skin to offer a deeper massage. There are also vibrating face rollers, typically powered by batteries, which can take some of the elbow grease out of massaging your face. You’ll come across ice rollers too, which often feature one large head made of either stainless steel or gel. As the name suggests, ice rollers are meant to be used cold—and as board-certified dermatologist Stacy Chimento, MD , previously told Well+Good when asked about the benefits of ice rolling the skin : “The combination of massage and cool application will … tighten your pores and calm the skin from minor irritations or puffiness.” While ice rollers can cover more surface area, any type of face roller can be placed into the fridge to reap the aforementioned benefits.

Whichever one you prefer, you’ll find a variety of noteworthy options in the list below.

Shop the best face rollers

Mount Lai The De-Puffing Jade Facial Roller

Material: Jade

“While face rollers made out of synthetic polymers and chemical dyes may be cost-effective, it is much better to buy a face roller made out of authentic, natural stone,” says Dr. Green—and Mount Lai’s dual-ended face roller fits the bill. It’s made from real jade, which according to Dr. Green, “delivers a cooling effect to the skin without the need for refrigeration.” The larger end is ideal for the cheeks, forehead, and neck, while the smaller end is perfect for the areas around the eyes and lips.

  • Made from real jade stone
  • Features two rollers for larger and smaller areas of the face
  • Jade material can harbor bacteria if not cleaned often and properly

Skin Gym Cryo Stainless Steel Facial Roller

Material: Stainless steel

As an alternative to stone-made face rollers, consider the Skin Gym Cryo Stainless Steel Facial Roller, which comes recommended by Dr. Klein. “In general, I prefer stainless steel versus stone because it is nonporous and won’t harbor bacteria like stone can,” she says. “I like this one by Skin Gym. It’s 100 percent stainless steel and dual-sided with a larger roller for the cheeks and jawline and a smaller side for around the eye area.” Plus, the metal stays cool to the touch—a welcome sensation that enhances the experience of using it on your face.

  • Made from nonporous stainless steel
  • May not be ideal for very sensitive skin

Skin Gym Face Sculptor Beauty Roller

Another option from Skin Gym is the Face Sculptor Beauty Roller, and I prefer it to dual-ended face rollers. Made from stainless steel, it features two globes that easily glide across the skin, and without needing to apply much pressure, it alleviates tension I’ve accumulated after hours of scrunching my face and clenching my jaw in my sleep. I like that it feels like two knuckles gently kneading into my skin, and it stays chilly, which is a nice wake-up call whenever I use it in the morning.

It’s best suited for the larger areas of the face (think the cheeks, forehead, and jawline) as it’s too large to tackle any puffiness around the eyes.

  • Offers a deeper massage than dual-ended face rollers
  • It is best suited for larger, rather than smaller, areas of the face

Jillian Dempsey Gold Sculpting Bar

Material: 24-karat-gold-plated metal

If you’re willing to shell out more money for a face roller, opt for Jillian Dempsey’s Gold Sculpting Bar. Made by celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, it has come with the stamp of approval from stars like Jennifer Aniston —and for good reason. The 24-karat-gold-plated wand vibrates while massaging the skin, all with minimal to no effort on your part. It delivers up to 6,000 vibrations per minute, packing a punch when it comes to stimulating blood flow and encouraging lymphatic drainage, and subsequently, addressing puffiness.

  • Delivers up to 6,000 vibrations per minute to massage the skin more deeply
  • Requires little to no elbow grease

Esarora Ice Roller

Material: Plastic; stainless steel

If you’re looking for a dedicated ice roller, look no further than this option from Esarora. Dr. Geria recommends it for its affordability and straightforward design. It comes with two interchangeable heads—one made from silicone (which is gentle on the skin) and the other from stainless steel (which is—and stays—extra chilly). He adds, “It can be stored in your freezer for extra soothing when trying to address puffiness.” I also love that it can tamp down redness almost immediately after use, coming in especially handy when I have angry zit.

  • Includes two interchangeable heads
  • Inexpensive
  • Silicone head can’t retain temperature for long

Kitsch Mini Spa Rollers (2-Piece Set)

Originally $18, now $16

This pair of mini face rollers are perfect for taking on the go—and while small, their impact is not. The set includes a silicone face roller with a textured surface to knead away tension and another with a stainless steel head to help soothe inflammation in addition to helping de-puff the skin. Also included is a velvet drawstring bag to store everything in. Their size is also ideal for tackling the skin around the eyes and lips, which are oft-overlooked but no less deserving of your attention.

  • Includes two mini-size face rollers
  • Ideal for targeting the skin around the eyes and lips
  • Might be too small to feel a difference when used on larger areas of the face

Mount Lai Rose Quartz Facial Spa Set

Originally $70, now $54

Material: Rose quartz

This Mount Lai set comes with both a face roller and a gua sha tool—and the stamp of approval of Dr. Green. “The facial roller is dual-sided and has two different roller sizes to adjust for different facial areas, while the gua sha tool is designed to be used in more contoured areas such as the jawline,” she says, adding: “These rose quartz facial roller and gua sha are authentic and natural and are not treated with polymers or artificial dyes, making them safe to use on all skin types.”

  • Made from real rose quartz
  • Comes with face roller and gua sha tool
  • Delicate and prone to breakage

The 7 Best Ice Rollers For Faces, According To Dermatologists

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

For a cooling massage on your forehead, cheeks, under-eyes, and more, reach for the best ice rollers for faces. Top picks feature an easy-to-hold handle and a roller head that’s well-sized to best reach the areas you’re massaging — a larger head will cover most of your face, while a smaller one will allow for precise rolling in areas like your jawline or under the eyes. Ice rollers typically come with either stainless steel or gel heads, and each has its pros and cons. “Stainless steel ice rollers stay cold longer than gel rollers because they have a higher thermal conductivity,” explains Dr. Cheryl Rosen , a board-certified dermatologist and director of dermatology at BowTied Life. “This means that they can transfer heat more quickly from the ice to your skin, which results in a longer-lasting cooling effect.” That being said, rollers filled with gel beads tend to be gentler and softer overall , so they may be more comfortable to use. Just know they may not stay cold for as long as stainless steel rollers.

Next, you’ll want to consider the features that make your ice roller more practical. For easy cleaning, choose an ice roller with a removable head. If you’d like to try out other facial rollers , some ice rollers are sold in combination with jade rollers or other tools. Some even come in a set with two different ice roller sizes.

Once you get your hands on the best ice roller, it’s important you know how to best utilize it. Dr. Howard Sobel , a dermatological surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital and founder of Sobel Skin, explains that you should first “create a cushion on the skin by applying a moisturizer , serum , or face oil to create good slip.” Then, start rolling! Begin by “lightly rolling from the inner corners of the face outwards, lifting, and pausing at the temples, cheekbones, and jawline.”

If you’re curious about the effectiveness of facial rollers in general, evidence is limited. However, one small study showed that using a facial roller on the cheek for 5 minutes each day resulted in increased blood flow. And Dr. Harshal Ranglani , a clinical and aesthetic dermatologist, explains that “improved blood flow gives the skin a 'glow',” plus the massage technique may also “improve lymphatic drainage of the face. This reduces facial puffiness.” The coldness of an ice roller may produce extra short term benefits, too. It may “help soothe the skin and decrease signs of inflammation such as redness,” Dr. Ranglani explains.

Ready to roll? These seven ice rollers for faces are the best of the best picks out there. Amazon reviewers remark that these picks feel so good on the skin, too — you really can’t go wrong!

1. A Wildly Popular Gel-Filled Ice Roller

ESARORA Ice Roller

A cult favorite on Amazon, this ice roller from ESARORA boasts an impressive 4.6-star rating overall, after 16,000-plus reviews on the site, with reviewers commenting that it feels “divine” and “heavenly” when used on the face. The tool features a plastic-coated roller head that’s filled with gel beads and feels super gentle on the skin. The roller head is on the larger side, about 3 inches wide, and the entire device is about 7 inches long. The ice roller’s handle is easy to hold thanks to its anti-slip grip and wider nature. Once your facial rolling session is complete, the roller head pops right off for easy cleaning.

While the manufacturer doesn’t list the amount of time that the ice roller needs to sit in the freezer before use or mention how long it will stay cold, reviewers on Amazon indicate that neither of these factors are an issue — many people commented that the roller head stays chilly the entire time they utilize it.

Choose from a couple of different color options (including blue, purple, green, and red) as well as picks with stainless steel roller heads, too.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “I have been popping this in the freezer and using it in the mornings and as a part of my bedtime routine. I put my oil blends on my face and then use this and it makes my skin feel so good! It feels very chilled and refreshed for a while afterwards too. It is so calming and relaxing and my skin has already shown improvement in redness and puffiness.”

2. A Set Of Steel Ice Rollers In 2 Different Sizes

URYOUTH Ice Roller Set (2-Pack)

This set of two differently sized ice rollers allows you to reach all areas of your face with ease. The larger ice roller is about 3 inches wide and 7.5 inches long for rolling on the main sections of your face (think cheeks, forehead, etc.), and the smaller pick is 5 inches long with a roller head that’s about 1 inch wide for more precise rolling in spots like around the eyes, nose, or jawline. The smaller ice roller has a narrow handle, while the larger pick has a wider handle that’s more comfortable to hold for longer periods of time. Both tools feature a stainless steel head that gets cold after just 10 minutes or so in the freezer. And the manufacturer recommends massaging your face with these tools for about 10 minutes max. When done, the roller heads come off for quick cleaning.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “I love the different sizes! The small one is good for under the eyes and the larger one covers larger surfaces. They hold the cold temperature for a long time too!”

3. A Ice Roller With Both Stainless Steel & Gel-Filled Roller Heads

SPANLA Ice Roller

Can’t decide between a gel-filled roller head or a stainless steel one? This ice roller set is calling your name — it comes with two roller heads (one made from each material), so that you can swap them out as desired. (And some Amazon reviewers even mentioned that they used both of the rollers during the same massage session!) Each roller head measures 3.34 inches wide so it’s easy to massage a large area of your face at once. And the thick, 7.48-inch-long handle is super comfortable to hold and maneuver.

To prep the ice roller, place the roller head(s) you’re planning on using in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. Take the roller head out, pop it onto the handle, and voila! Get ready for a spa-like experience from the comfort of your home. Since you can swap rollers, it also means these are super easy to clean.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “I am obsessed with this product!!! So nice that there are both types of rollers too!!!! And they feel soooo good when I roll my face. Such a good way to wake up and/or go to sleep.”

4. A Chic-Looking Gel Ice Roller For Just $10

Finishing Touch Facial Massage Ice Roller

Sometimes low cost can mean low quality, but that’s certainly not the case with this ice roller . While this pick costs around $10 (literally such a steal for something that looks so chic!), Amazon reviewers confirm that the quality of this pick is on par with its stylishness. The ice roller boasts a gel-filled roller head that will get super chilly in just 10 to 15 minutes of freezer time, and the wide handle is super easy to maneuver, though the manufacturer doesn’t provide measurements for the handle or head. When your cooling massage is complete, the roller head comes off for cleaning — don’t forget to put it back into the freezer for next time!

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “Love this roller. Have a few other rollers (jade & rose quartz). The thing I love about this one is how long it stays cold. Being able to put it in the freezer vs the refrigerator makes it super cold and de-puffs my face super quick in the morning before I put on my makeup!”

5. A Dual-Ended Ice Roller

ITME Dual-Ended Ice Roller

With a larger 1.5-inch roller head on one end and a smaller one on the other side that’s less than 1 inch wide, you’ll find yourself constantly reaching for this dual-ended ice roller for all of your facial massage needs. Both roller heads are made from stainless steel, and Amazon reviewers note that they stay cold for a shockingly long period of time. The narrow handle is pretty easy to grip overall, and the entire tool is about 6 inches long.

The brand sells other ice rollers, too, including a mini option that’s perfect for travel.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “This little roller is so nice to use on my face when I’ve had a stressful day or if I have a migraine. It just helps my face relaxed and it feels like a nice facial massage! It is slightly longer than a razor and fits perfect in my purse makeup bag.”

6. A Set With A Gel-Filled Ice Roller, 2 Jade Rollers & A Gua Sha Tool

EAONE Face Roller Set (4-Pack)

With four handy facial tools (including an ice roller, two jade rollers, and a gua sha tool), this face massage set is one that you’ll always want to have on hand — and Amazon reviewers certainly agree, hence the solid 4.4-star rating overall they give this pick, after 2,300-plus reviews. The ice roller in this set features a gel-filled roller head that’s on the wider side (it’s 3.35 inches, to be exact) to cover large areas of your face at once. It gets cold in just 15 minutes, and it’ll feel amazingly refreshing on the skin! Post massage, the roller head pops off for cleaning.

The rest of the tools in the set are made from 100% natural jade stone — one of the rollers is ridged, while the other is dual-ended with different-sized roller heads for the various areas of your face.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “The ice roller freezes perfectly! It gets very cold and stays cold for about 45 minutes which is plenty of time to ice roll. I really like it and the handle is large so that it doesn't cramp my hand. I also use the jade rollers and have no complaints.”

7. A Set Of Mini Rollers Designed Specifically For The Under-Eye Area

Kitsch Mini Eye & Face Rollers (2-Pack)

Both of the rollers in this facial roller set are designed specifically for the delicate under-eye area — they’re super small in size (weighing in at just 2.29 ounces!) to fit perfectly into the contours of your face. The ice roller in the set features an ultra-smooth stainless steel roller head. Place the ice roller in the fridge or freezer to make it nice and chilly, and get ready to enjoy a soothing facial massage! The other facial roller boasts a soft, silicone head that’s ridged — it may be able to help promote blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. When taking this pick on the go, be sure to utilize the included carrying bag, which is made of a soft velvet material. If you just want an ice roller, the brand also sells a full-sized one without the separate facial roller.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “I'm always preaching about taking time for self-care. Whether it's an hour a day or just a minute to yourself, take that time! I was skeptical about these facial rollers, and after trying this stainless steel facial roller for my first facial roller, I'm in love 😍 Just stick it in your freezer, take it out, let it thaw a bit, and use it on your face for a perfect cooling massage”

Also Great: A Set Of Ice Globes

PRIME Fitness Stainless Steel Ice Globes (2-Pack)

While not a traditional ice roller, these stainless steel ice globes are another great tool for a cooling facial massage. Place them in the freezer for two hours, then rub the cooling balls across your face for a refreshing, soothing experience. The round shape makes it easy to get into every curve of your face, and the removable handles (which come in a range of different colors) protect your hands from the cold metal. According to the brand, you can also place the globes in a bowl of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes if you’d like a warm massage instead of a cool one, though you should be careful to ensure the steel doesn’t get too hot before you place it on your face.

This roller can help shrink pores, increase lymphatic drainage, smooth out your skin, reduce fatigue, and more. It's also great for releasing tension, helping relieve migraines, and rubbing over bruises, reviewers say.

Mount Lai Massaging Jade Textured Facial Roller

Massaging Jade Textured Facial Roller

Similar to the traditional jade roller, this one is textured, so it helps products absorb deeper into the skin. It can also help dullness or unevenly-textured skin, and helping loss of any firmness in one's skin.

How do ice rollers work?

Ice rollers essentially work under the same concept as using an ice pack to reduce swelling from injuries, says Revay Plunkett, nurse injector at Revay Aesthetics in California. The intense cold helps your pores “appear smaller and temporarily tightens your skin,” she says.

The cold also helps with “delivering highly oxygenated blood flow to the skin and reducing inflammation from poor sleep, poor diet, or a cry session,” says Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, FAAD, chief medical officer at Ideal Image and co-founder of Modern Dermatology PC.

What are the benefits of cold therapy?

They're unknown, Levy says, but cold therapy does help in the short-term. Anyone can and should try using an ice roller, but be careful if you have open sores on your skin, whether it’s acne or another infection or rosacea , all of which can be triggered by the cold, Dr. Robinson says.

How do you use an ice roller?

If you want to start ice rolling, you can incorporate an ice roller into your morning or nighttime routine, but you can also just pick one up whenever your face looks puffier than normal.

Be sure to roll on a clean, dry face before applying any serums or moisturizers, and use the tool in an upward or zig-zag motion, beginning in the center of your face and moving outward. You should also make sure to clean it after every use, using a face wash or mild soap and water, and let it dry completely before tucking it onto a ziplock bag to store in your freezer, Dr. Robinson says.

Ice Rollers to Soothe Your Skin

Dealing with swollen or inflamed skin? An ice roller might just be your solution.

The chilled temperature of an ice roller helps to de-puff swollen and inflamed skin— often a result of factors such as sleeping on your face overnight. They also help move excess lymphatic fluid, and provide gentle relief for those suffering from sunburn. When massaged onto skin, ice rollers help to combat these problems by constricting blood vessels which gives skin a revitalized appearance. Just as you would apply an ice pack to an injury to reduce swelling, the same concept applies when using an ice roller. So whether you’re trying to minimize the appearance of puffy eye bags or tighten skin for a rejuvenated look, we’ve got a list of ice rollers that will help to soothe your face.

The 9 Best Ice Rollers for Your Skin Care Routine in 2024

The 9 Best Ice Rollers for Your Skin Care Routine in 2024

Editor’s Note: Ice rollers are one of those secret skincare products that are quickly picking up in popularity. I’m a big fan of this trend due to the dermatological reasons why an ice roller helps you reduce inflammation and ensure a bright, fresh complexion from the moment you wake up. You should note that it can take some getting used to using an ice roller, so make sure you check out our pro tips below for guidance on adding this item to your daily skincare routine.

Have you ever woken up to look in the mirror, only to notice a puffier-than-normal face staring back at you? Are you suffering from acne, sunburn, or under-eye bags? Well, you should try using an ice roller!

Ice is often touted as a secret skincare ingredient by dermatologists, as it is effective at shrinking pores and enhancing your natural glow. But when ice itself is applied to the skin directly, it can irritate sensitive skin and make a watery mess.

This is where ice rollers come in handy. When used correctly, ice rollers reduce inflammation and enhance your skin’s natural glow, without giving you frostbite or wet clothes. Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Best Overall Ice Roller: ESARORA Ice Roller

2. best premium ice roller: recoup cryosphere ice massage roller, 3. best budget ice roller: bfasu upgrade ice roller, 4. best value ice roller: spanla 2 ice rollers, 5. best quick-cool roller: kitsch ice roller, 6. best hybrid ice roller: stackedskincare cryotherapy ice roller, 7. cibluty ice roller, 8. allwinwin rmb09 roller massage ball, 9. healilly ice roller globes, jade rollers vs. ice rollers, ice roller safety cautions, pro tips for using ice rollers, final thoughts, important factors to consider when choosing an ice roller.

Ice rollers are the hidden gems of the beauty world. Unbeknownst to many, there are ice rollers of every shape, color, and function available on the market.

If you were already using ice cubes to cool your face every day, you no longer have to worry about remembering to fill up the ice tray before bed. Ice rollers can freeze in mere minutes or and can be reused, making your life a little easier.

Your idea of a satisfactory ice roller will change depending on your skin type, age, and personal preferences, which is why it’s crucial to read reviews and the item description before impulse buying an ice roller. For your convenience, we’ve done all the research and compiled a list of the best ice rollers of 2024 – hopefully, you’ll find one that suits your needs here!

First, here are some things you might want to consider before you start your online shopping spree.

Ice rollers are manufactured with a wide range of materials, but for the majority of ice rollers, you’ll have two choices; metal or plastic. Metal is more durable than plastic but can give you frostbite if not used carefully.

On the other hand, plastic rollers are generally cheaper and maybe more convenient if you’re planning to travel. Overall, they don’t tend to perform quite as well, though.

Don’t fret, all of our product reviews highlight the material type of every ice roller. In any case, many come with interchangeable roller heads, so you can test out both with only a single purchase

Most ice rollers are shaped in an inverted triangle with the roller head at the top due to its simple and effective design. With that being said, there are certainly ice rollers that deviate from the norm. Many ice rollers have a spherical roller head (or two!) instead of a rectangular roller head.

If you’d like to know more about the pros and cons of each roller shape before diving into our product reviews, you might want to skip over to our comprehensive ice roller buyer guide .

Do you have enough patience to wait six hours for your ice roller to freeze, or will you forget and shove your ice roller behind your tubs of ice cream?

When choosing an ice roller, consider how much time you can wait for your skincare session. There are super quick ice rollers that will freeze after 15 minutes in the freezer, but on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are also ice rollers that take two hours and above to freeze.

It should be noted that the longer time that the ice roller spends in the freezer, the longer it will generally take to defrost, and vice versa; the shorter time your ice roller spends in the freezer, the less time it will take to melt.

Now you know what to consider, here are the best ice rollers your money can buy.

Top 9 Best Ice Rollers 2024

ESARORA Ice Roller

Editor’s Rating:

ESARORA’s Ice Roller treats puffiness, migraines and offers pain relief. We love how it has decided to use a special type of gel instead of the traditional water, as it means that it will stay cold for a little longer. Whilst ice globes tend to jump over some parts of the skin unless properly lubricated, ESARORA’s Ice Roller glides smoothly over the skin.

However, no product is truly perfect. This ice roller might get stuck in your hair if rolled too far into the hairline, but you should be fine as long as you keep the device away from your scalp. The roller also makes some noise, which might be a dealbreaker for some if they prefer a relaxing skincare session.

This ice roller contains some collagen. Although the usefulness of collagen inside a freezable roller head is debatable as it is not directly applied to the skin, it is certainly thoughtful of the company to do so. Other than that, the ESARORA ice roller possesses all the typical materials of a standard ice roller, utilizing plastic and gel as its main ingredients. You can opt to purchase a metal roller head for extra money.

The ESARORA ice roller is shaped like an inverted triangle, with a handle at the bottom and a roller at the top. The head is composed of a plastic sack filled with gel – or you can choose to have a stainless steel roller head as well.

If you’re often in a hurry, this ice roller might be the one for you. You should freeze this roller for at least an hour for optimal results, but that’s still much less time than you’ll find with most ice rollers, including one of its closest competitors – like the Recoup Cryosphere Roller , which is best left overnight.

Once defrosted, the roller remains cold for up to ten minutes, depending on the climate you are in.

  • Easy application
  • Quick freeze
  • Stays cold for a long time
  • Interchangeable roller head
  • Makes some noise

Recoup Cryosphere Ice Massage Roller

The Recoup Fitness Cryosphere Cold Massage Roller holds one significant benefit above its competitors; it stays cold for up to six hours. Although not a lot of people would use a massage roller for longer than an hour, it means that it keeps its freezing point at a stable temperature for far longer compared to ice rollers that defrost in twenty minutes. This mobility tool is also easy to carry around with you.

It’s recommended purpose is to relieve your muscles, joints, and tendons, not to give yourself a facial. Even though you could try, the residue from the ball, especially on the first freeze, might make your skin appear blue, and the roller head would be too big.

This ice roller is composed of stainless steel, with a plastic case.

The diameter of the stainless steel ball is a little larger than a tennis ball – 3.14 inches or roughly 8 centimeters. It is much larger than the types of ice rollers used for your face.

This roller should ideally be frozen overnight for the best results but freezing it for over two hours is acceptable. The Recoup Fitness Cryosphere Cold Massage Roller should also be frozen at a low freezer temperature setting if you want it to stay cold for longer.

It isn’t recommended to use this roller on your body for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Make sure to give your skin a five-minute break every fifteen minutes before continuing your massage session.

This roller would be perfect for those who want to take their ice roller to different places and have a relaxation session without having to re-freeze the roller every twenty minutes.

  • Stays cold for up to 6 hours
  • Easy to carry around
  • Made of stainless steel - easy to clean
  • Residue on the ball might make skin appear blue if not cleaned before usage
  • Might be too big

BFASU Upgrade Ice Roller

The BFASU upgrade ice roller is a cheap but quality ice roller. Like the ESARORA ice roller, it treats puffiness and promotes blood circulation. It can stay cold for up to 20-30 minutes, a long time for an ice roller. Despite being cheaper than most of its competitors, this roller doesn’t compromise price for quality.

It must be stressed that caution must be taken whenever using ice rollers. If you press too hard on your face with the BFASU upgrade ice roller, the extreme temperatures can cause negative reactions to your skin, though this is true for most other ice rollers.

Furthermore, the roller is a little bulky and might be hard to roll on your eyes, depending on how large your eyes are. It’s still a good option for elsewhere, though – just be aware you may need a different product for your puffy eyes .

This roller is manufactured out of a plastic handle and a plastic roller, the latter of which is filled with gel, water, and beads. The beads inside the plastic roller head help to keep the temperature of the ice roller nice and cold.

Unfortunately, you cannot replace the plastic roller head with a metal one, so it wouldn’t be a good choice for you if you prefer metal rollers or dislike the feel of plastic on your skin.

Like most other plastic ice rollers, the BFASU ice roller is shaped like an inverted triangle with the roller head at the top and the handle at the bottom. The roller head is soundless and rolls across the skin smoothly.

It is recommended to keep this roller in the freezer for at least a couple of hours, but for optimal usage, it’s best to leave the roller head in overnight.

  • Economical price
  • Very high quality
  • Stays cold for up to 20-30 minutes
  • Lasts a long time
  • The roller is a little bulky
  • Can cause skin reactions if not careful

SPANLA 2 Ice Rollers

With an additional roller barrel for no extra cost, the SPANLA 2 is a great choice for the finicky or adventurous. The exchangeable roller head means that you can exchange the heads depending on your mood or use both for your morning skincare session.

Despite the merits of the ice roller, the screeching sound that it makes as it rolls on the face can be loud and unbearable, especially for the metal roller head. If you’re looking for a relaxing massage session, you might find your zen being interrupted by loud squeaks. Use the plastic roller head if you wish to minimize screeching or choose another option from our list.

These ice rollers are made from plastic, gel, water, and stainless steel. The stainless steel is more efficient when you’re short on time, as it lowers its temperature quickly but also comes to room temperature in a matter of seconds upon skin contact. The plastic roller, on the other hand, takes a little more time to freeze but stays cold for longer.

Unless you have an extremely large face, the shape isn’t going to be something that you’re buying the SPANLA 2 Ice Rollers for. They’re large and bulky and don’t fit under most people’s eyes. What’s more, the handle is far too big for most people (of course, unless you have big hands!)

The time that is taken to freeze these ice rollers ultimately depends on the coldness of the fridge. This being said, it’s safe to say that the metal roller likely won’t take much more than 5-10 minutes to get cold when placed in the fridge. The plastic roller will take a minimum of 2 hours to freeze.

It doesn’t matter if you have a couple of hours or a couple of minutes to de-puff your face, this roller will freeze within the time you need it to.

  • Exchangeable roller heads
  • Coldness lasts for a long time (for plastic roller head)
  • Additional metal roller head at no extra cost
  • Excessive screeching sounds occasionally

Kitsch Ice Roller

The Kitsch Ice Roller might be a great choice if you’re looking to replace your rose quartz/jade roller, but don’t expect it to replace a standard ice roller made of plastic and gel. The ESARORA Ice Roller would be much better, in that case. Why? Steel absorbs warmth very quickly, so this Kitsch stainless steel roller will absorb your skin’s heat before you’re finished with half of your face, at least if the weather’s warm. Bummer!

That isn’t all bad news, though. The fact that this roller absorbs its surrounding temperatures very quickly can be useful in situations where you’ve forgotten to freeze your ice roller. Simply stick the Kitsch ice Roller in the fridge for three to five minutes, and you’re finished. As it freezes in a short amount of time, this roller would be perfect for people who consistently forget to put their ice rollers in the fridge before bedtime.

This Kitsch Ice Roller is made from stainless steel and plastic, which allows for easy cleaning. Simply rub the roller with a little bit of rubbing alcohol if you feel as though it’s getting grimy.

A sleek curve gives the Kitsch roller elegance, whilst its pink color gives it some vibrance. The roller itself is shaped like a trapezoid, with the wide roller head at the top and the handle at the bottom.

This roller can take as little as three to five minutes to freeze, but this also means it will stay cool for less time. You can expect to get half of your face done, and then you’ll have to place the roller back in the freezer for a little while.

  • No need to place in the freezer
  • Stainless steel roller - easier to clean
  • Aesthetic design
  • Doesn’t stay cold for long

StackedSkincare Cryotherapy Ice Roller

A high-quality tool for those who are willing to spend a little more on their ice rollers, the StackedSkincare Ice roller offers relief from your skin inflammation in a classy way. The aesthetic design and logo earned it some extra brownie points! This ice roller was developed by an expert esthetician, which makes this ice roller much more legitimate and makes it stand out from others on the market.

Unfortunately, this StackedSkincare roller is too bulky to roll over your eyes, which might be the very reason some might have bought the product, especially as the eyes are the most prone to being bloated.

Metal and plastic and a gel/water filling combine to give this unique roller life. By utilizing a stainless steel roller head wrapped around a plastic gel sac, this roller keeps the best of two worlds – the metal feel of the roller and the long-lasting coolness of the gel sac.

This roller is another standard face roller, shaped like an inverted triangle. Unlike some of the other rollers on this list, it has a curved back for easy holding.

It is recommended to put this roller in the freezer for at least a couple of hours or overnight for optimal results. Once frozen, you can expect this roller to remain cool on your face for at least ten minutes, though it might last a little bit longer if you had it in the freezer overnight.

  • Stainless steel design - more sanitary and smoother feel
  • Stays cool for a long time (10 minutes+)
  • Doesn’t roll under eyes
  • Unreliable product shipment

Cibluty Ice Roller

Ten minutes of freezing time, plexiglass, and a unique shape. This Cibluty ice roller ball ticks nearly all the criteria for the ultimate ice roller, except that it’s a little too fragile for the average person. Leaving the ice roller in the freezer for more than ten minutes can lead to cracks and an unusable ice roller, and one drop onto the floor, and you might be left with an enormous mess to clean up.

Apart from that, this is a solid and reasonably priced, high-quality product. It comes with one makeup remover pad, which you might consider an odd addition to an ice roller. However, it makes sense when you think about it; removing your makeup and massaging your face with these rollers could be a relaxing way to end your day after you get home.

These ice rollers are made of a high-quality hybrid glass called “nano borosilicate,” which you can think of like a fancy term for “freeze-proof glass” or plexiglass. Just because they’re freeze-proof doesn’t mean that they’re break-proof, so be extra careful when handling them. As for the liquid inside, the bulbs are filled with a mixture of aqua, hyaluronic acid, peppermint, panthenol, and citric acid essence.

This ice roller is unique because it doesn’t use a roller head at all – instead, it resembles a globe. Its round shape can be advantageous when compared to a roller-head ice roller as it can effectively focus on a smaller area of skin and reduce the puffiness in that area well, instead of being a general ice roller. If you’d like to reduce bloat in one particular place (e.g., your eyes), then this roller would be highly recommended.

If you’re the type to forget the cookies in the oven or the pasta on the stove, you probably shouldn’t buy this product. Keeping this ice roller in the freezer at a temperature of 14-40°F (-10-4°C) for more than ten minutes can result in cracked and leaking ice bulbs.

However, if you’re dead set on having an ice roller, you should probably set an alarm so you can be notified before your money goes down the drain (literally!). As it only takes ten minutes for these bulbs to freeze, it’d be a perfect fit if you’re short on time in the mornings.

  • Effective at spot treatment
  • Ten minutes of chilling time is all you need
  • Comes with an absorbable serum to give skin more lift and glow
  • One-year replacement warranty
  • Will crack if left in the freezer too long
  • Careful handling required

ALLWINWIN RMB09 Roller Massage Ball

If you’re suffering from muscle pain, be it in your face, legs, or arms, this massage ball might be a great choice for you. It can soothe your sore muscles effectively using heat or coolness. Use it after an intense gym session or a long run, or even just in the morning when you want to loosen up your jaw muscles.

This roller can be kept in the freezer for as long as you need, but one drawback that it has is that it needs to sit for two hours before you can use it for ice rolling your face (or any other part of your body).

For a hot massage, it only takes five minutes to prepare – minus counting the time it takes to boil water. You could go for a hot/cold treatment by freezing the roller for two hours and rolling it on your face. You could then immerse the roller in hot water for twenty minutes, as the roller is probably retaining some coldness from the two-hour freeze.

Roll the warm steel device on your face, and you’ve just given yourself a hot/cold treatment, proven to reduce exercise-induced muscle pain.

This metal roller is composed of a non-freezing alcohol gel interior with a stainless steel coating. Its hybrid design allows the roller to hold temperatures for longer times than its counterparts created of steel or plastic and gel. The steel ball itself sits in between a y-shaped plastic handle for easier rolling.

At first glance, the ALLWINWIN RMB09 massage ball looks identical to a traditional ice roller, but with one exception; it has a spherical roller head instead of a cylindrical one. Its spherical design allows for spot treatment, but it can’t swivel in all directions – just up and down.

It serves all the same functions as a cylindrical ice roller, except that it is better at relaxing one particular spot instead of a wide area.

For hot therapy, it’s recommended to bring water to a temperature of 50-70 C, or around 150F, then immerse the roller in the boiling liquid for at least five minutes. For cold therapy, you should ideally put the roller in the freezer for at least two hours, although more is fine – you could leave it in overnight.

  • Holds temperatures for 20+ minutes
  • Hybrid design
  • Can be used for hot and cold massages
  • Takes two hours to freeze

HEALILLY Ice Roller Globes

Make sure you don’t freeze these “ice” rollers! The HEALILLY ice rollers are very fragile if placed in the freezer and can break after only a couple of hours in the fridge. If you’re a forgetful person, we suggest you look elsewhere. If they break within the warranty period, they’ll send you a gratuitous replacement, but you’ll have to wait a little bit until they are shipped.

Other than that, these ice rollers are very helpful for reducing under-eye circles and improving circulation to your face.

These ice rollers are made of crystal, a natural stone that will be easy on your skin. Although crystal is aesthetically pleasing and feels great, it can also shatter very easily if left in the freezer for too long.

Shaped like drumsticks, these crystal ice rollers are filled with a blue-tinted liquid. The handles of these ice rollers are surrounded by handles with “bump particles” for an easy and stable grip.

Only ever put this roller in the refrigerator, never the freezer. You could risk putting it in the freezer at the lowest setting, but even then, you shouldn’t leave it in there for more than five minutes. For the refrigerator, you can put it in there for twenty minutes in summer and ten minutes in winter.

  • Made of crystal
  • Gratuitous replacement
  • Bump particle handles
  • Very easy to break - more than ten minutes in the freezer and your ice rollers are gone.
  • Vigilance needed when freezing

Guide to Buying Ice Rollers

Now you’ve seen the best ice rollers in our product review list , here are some further considerations to help your buying decision.

Both the jade and ice roller are excellent tools for de-bloating your face. Their shared aim is to reduce lymphatic drainage or to stimulate lymph fluid circulation, which is critical in removing toxins from the body. If you have a slow lymphatic system or want to get a slimmer face, you could see amazing results with both a jade roller or an ice roller but in slightly different ways.

So, what’s the difference between the two? Well, ice rollers are fantastic for waking you up and improving blood circulation – check out the ESARORA Ice Roller if that sounds like just what you need. Ice rollers also shrink your pores and tighten your skin . Jade rollers, on the other hand, relax your muscles and give your skin a healthy glow.

Ice rollers are generally safe to use. There’s little that can go wrong with rolling a cold piece of metal or plastic on your face, and the benefits far outweigh the risks in most cases. But if you fail to adhere to some safety guidelines (that should honestly be common sense), consequences will inevitably follow. Follow these tips to stay safe.

Watch the Time

Metal and stainless steel can stick to your skin , and if left in one position for an extended period, can give you frostbite. Watch out for any rust on the roller; though rust on stainless steel only appears after extended periods of use, it isn’t impossible- especially if the roller is immersed in liquid whilst it is being frozen.

Remember to clean the roller after each use with an alcohol-based (nontoxic) cleaner.

Don’t Ignore Leaks

Never ignore leaking liquid. There is a possibility that whatever is in the liquid might be toxic and cause a reaction (rashes, hives, etc.). Plus, the sharp edges from the broken roller might pierce your skin and wound you.

  • Increase the temperature – If you find that the ice roller is too harsh, try putting the roller in the refrigerator instead of the freezer. Keep in mind that this might mean that the ice roller will stay cold for less time, but it will also be gentler on your skin.
  • Be consistent – Ice regularly (every morning) for optimal results. You’ll see temporary benefits (reduced bloating) with one ice roller massage, but do it every day to reap additional benefits such as less acne, glowy skin, and reduced pores. Roll for 5-10 minutes every day for the best results.
  • Pressure – Roll with just enough pressure to make your skin move slightly but be careful not to put too much force.
  • Remove makeup first – Don’t roll your face when you have makeup on. Never do this! This will roll whatever gunk you have on your face into your pores and clog them up more.
  • Use upward strokes – This further promotes lymphatic drainage and helps reduce wrinkles.

You’re sure to have found an ice roller or two that you liked from this list. Maybe you’re already looking forward to having your mornings rejuvenated and de-bloated! We hope you learned something new from this guide, and we wish you luck in your future skincare endeavors.

How to use an ice roller.

Catherine Wilson

Ice rollers come in many shapes and styles, so it's important to know how to use them.

It's completely different to a cold compresses and has amazing benefits for the skin. If you've been searching for a natural way to improve the appearance of your skin, then this is it!

If you haven't heard of an ice roller before, then we recommend you start your journey with the following post instead - What is an Ice Roller?

How to Use An Ice Roller

To use an ice roller, you will need to follow the steps below. The cold roller has many benefits if used correctly, so make sure you follow them correctly.

Store the ice roller in the freezer

If using our recommended Mini Facial Ice Roller , you'll fill it with water and allow it to freeze overnight to ensure the ice is fully frozen.

If using a traditional ice roller for facial relaxation, you can put it in the freezer anywhere from 1hr to overnight. The longer you keep it in the freezer, the colder it will be.

Remove the ice roller from the freezer

With REAL ice rollers, you'll need to remove them from the freezer and allow them to sit for a few minutes. This will ensure that when you twist the cap off, the ice will not break. Now is the perfect time to spend a few minutes preparing your face.

Cleanse or prepare your face

Before using an ice roller, it is important to cleanse your face thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, or makeup. This will allow the ice roller to better penetrate your skin and provide maximum benefits.

The exception to this is if you're using it immediately after applying your skincare serums.

If using it after applying serums, make sure to wait 5-10mins so that the serums are fully absorbed.

When you use the ice roller after applying your serums, you'll close the pores and ensure the serum is fully locked into the skin.

Remove the ice roller cap

Very gently twist the cap so that you break the seal and keep the ice intact. Do this very slowly and gently to avoid breaking the ice.

Start with the forehead

Begin by rolling the ice roller gently over your forehead, starting from the center and moving outwards.

Roll the ice roller in a circular motion, applying gentle pressure. Repeat this process several times on each section of your forehead.

Move to the cheekbones

After you have finished rolling over your forehead, move to your cheekbones. Start at the top of your cheekbone, near your temples, and roll downwards towards your cheekbone. Repeat this process several times on each cheek.

Focus on the under-eye area

The under-eye area is delicate and needs extra care. To use the ice roller in this area, place the roller under your eye and roll it gently from the inside corner to the outside corner. Repeat this process several times on each under-eye area.

Finish with the chin and jawline

The final step is to roll the ice roller over your chin and jawline. Start at the center of your chin and roll outwards towards your ears. Repeat this process several times on each side of your face.

If you're interested in the benefits of ice rolling, make sure to check out the following post: Ice Roller Benefits - 9 Benefits of Facial Ice Rollers .

How long do you ice roll?

It is recommended to use an ice roller for no more than 10 minutes at a time .

The good thing about a real ice roller is by the time the ice has melted; you'll have gone through the process enough. No need to keep track of how long you've been doing it.

When to use an ice roller in your skincare routine

Ice rollers can be used at any time during your skincare routine. Some people like to use an ice roller on its own in the morning for a quick freshen-up, and others like to use it immediately after using a serum to lock the serum into the skin by closing the pores.

Both options are great.

You can use it in the morning or the evening; it's a personal choice. It reduces inflammation, so you can even use it if you have an injury.

How to clean an ice roller

If using a traditional gel ice roller or stainless steel ice roller, you can simply wash it with water and a little bit of soap. There's no need to overthink it.

Using our silicone ice roller, you can choose to use some soap or simply rinse it with warm or cold water.

Silicone stays very clean, especially if you only fill it with water.

Summary on ice rolling

We hope this has answered your question about how to use an ice roller.

Ice rolling has so many benefits, including increasing blood flow, fighting inflammation, restoring radiance, reducing puffiness and redness, reducing swelling, lymphatic drainage, helping your skin absorb serums and soothing acne-prone skin.

Making sure it stays cold is the most important thing.

This is why we recommend the silicone ice slider that literally stays icy cold.

If you've tried a jade roller, derma roller or any other skincare tool, it might now be time to try an ice roller.

What people say.

Stays cold for awhile and I noticed a huge difference in my puffiness after using. Plus it just feels amazing!

Finally Found !

I don't know where this product has been all my life. I keep it in the freezer and in the morning (especially after too much salt, or boozy drinks) I roll for five minutes while I drink my coffee. The difference in my face is night and day. It instantly de-puffs my whole face. Everybody I know who has a birthday in 2022 is getting this from me. Everybody should have one of these!!

Quick Cooling Device!

It was ready and in my freezer when I woke up with a painful clogged pore on my forehead. I rolled this consistently on the spot for 30 mins . It immediately soothed the pain and within 24hrs it had shrunk down by half, significantly reducing the pain and inflammation.

Life Saver!

I bought this for my wife. The first time she used it (on her eyes, bothered by allergies) she said it was amazing. Since then she's used it for headaches and sore muscles. She thinks it's the best thing ever. Can't believe I've been wasting money buying her jewelry all these years (just kidding).

SKIN GYM THE BEST!!!!

Excellent!!! incredible effect, very gentle and cold therapy is what I was looking for, very high quality, everyone should have it!!!

Lumiere de vie ice roller

Ice Rolling 101

I’m sure you’ve heard all of the buzz about ice rollers but do you know all the benefits they could bring to your skin? Our skin is the largest organ of the body, so it is very important to take care of it. Cold massage therapy is a natural way to help relieve so many skin concerns.

If you struggle with large pores, swelling or puffy skin, you may want to include an ice roller  into your skin care regimen.

Here’s everything you need to know and how these tools could improve your skin.

What is an ice roller?

Ice rollers are facial massagers that have been chilled to achieve the benefits of combining facial massage with cool temperatures. It is a water and gel filled roller with a handle that can be kept in the freezer.  They were created as a way to soothe and pamper the skin before and after skin treatments.

Ice Roller

Why should you ice roll?

Ice rolling is a type of cooling therapy for the face and using an ice roller can have many benefits. They can help reduce inflammation, cool skin, increase blood circulation and have a skin tightening effect. Cold temperatures cause constriction in the skin, resulting in a shrinking effect on the appearance of pores and blood vessels, creating a smoother, more even-toned surface over time. Cold treatments can also soothe inflammation and irritation, which is perfect for those who experience sensitivity or redness in their skin.

When should you use an ice roller?

You can use an ice roller daily or as often as desired. Here are some reasons you’ll definitely want to start using one:

Cold therapy is nothing new. Ever heard of an ice facial? People have been dunking their faces in sinks full of ice water for decades because they believed that the freezing cold water helped get rid of puffy eyes, redness, and temporarily tighten the skin – and they were right. But now there is an easier and more comfortable way!

If your eyes are tired and puffy, gently roll an ice roller around the under-eye area to bring relief and help shrink inflammation.

Post Shaving or Waxing

Great for using after hair removal treatments. Try rolling the ice roller around the eyebrows and upper lip to soothe stinging and reduce swelling and redness.

Mild Sunburn

There are not too many things that can sooth sunburn as well as cold therapy does. I recommend applying a thin layer of  Aloe Vera  Gel, and gently roll over the sunburnt areas to help soothe.

spicy travel ice roller

During Allergy Season

Ice rollers are great for people who suffer from allergies. You can calm inflammation and reduce swelling caused by some allergies.

If you have a particularly irritated breakout, ice rolling the area helps to reduce swelling and redness as well as reduce any itching and pain. It will also help it clear up a bit faster.

Headache or Sore Muscle Relief

Cold therapy can dramatically relieve muscle pain. With the rolling motion you can massage and cool down the muscles. If you have jaw pain, neck, forehead or any part of the face and body, massage that area with cold therapy for relief. And you can roll other parts of your body too!

Seal in Treatments

The constricting effect of ice rollers also offers an efficient way to seal the blood vessels in the skin after applying a treatment such as serum or other treatments. I also like to use it with my sheet masks .

Lymphatic Drainage

Used at the end of your skin care routine, an ice roller massage soothes and smooths skin, aiding in lymphatic drainage as much as a fingertip massage, with the added benefits of the cold temperature.

How to use an ice roller

1. Sanitize with alcohol and a cotton ball.

2. Freeze your ice roller for at least 2 hours

3. Once cold, start rolling using light pressure, roll outward from nose, across jawline and across forehead for 2-5 minutes each day.

4. Roll gently down the sides of your neck.

5. Sanitize and store in freezer.

Mint and Twist

The Perfect Spicy Mule

This spicy mule takes a traditional Moscow mule and turns up the heat with spicy jalapeño and an optional chili salt rim.

side view of copper mug with ice cubes, ,mint and lime.

The classic Moscow Mule, the precursor to all Mule cocktails, was born in the 1940s in the United States when a vodka distributor and a ginger beer maker combined their drinks, resulting in a refreshing cocktail in a distinctive copper mug.

The Kentucky Mule replaced vodka with bourbon, the Mexican Mule with tequila , and so forth. The Spicy Mule builds on this foundation by introducing heat to the mix. It delivers a warming kick that is a welcome addition, especially for lovers of spicy food and drink.

Ingredients

Here’s what you need for this spicy cocktail.

  • 2 ounces of vodka – Unflavored vodka. The quality of vodka isn’t too important as it’s being infused, but try to choose at least a middle-shelf variety.
  • 4 ounces of your favorite ginger beer (or you can use ginger ale)
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1-3 slices jalapeño (The not-so-secret ingredient. Adjust according to your preferred spice level. You can also use a different chili pepper)
  • Lime slice and jalapeño slice for garnish
  • Fresh mint for garnish
  • Optional chili and salt for the rim –  Making a chili salt rim is easy to add an extra kick of flavor and more heat.

Mix the sea salt and chili powder together in a small dish until well combined. Rub a lime or lemon wedge around the rim of your glass.

Dip the rim of the copper mug into the chili salt mix, ensuring the rim is fully coated.

Fill your glass with ice and top it off with ginger beer. Stir gently to mix the ingredients.

Top your drink off with lime slices, a few mint sprigs, and a jalapeño slice.

Make it your own

While this spicy moscow mule recipe is delish, don’t hesitate to experiment next time. Love tequila? Try a Mexican Mule with a spicy twist. If you’re a bourbon fan, make a spicy version of the Kentucky Mule. Love fruit? Muddle some fresh pineapple or mango with the jalapeño for a spicy, tropical twist. You could also swap the mint for cilantro or basil!
