• By Car:  Drive from Manila to Bataan via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). Take the exit to Dinalupihan, and then follow the signs to Bataan National Park.
• By Ferry:  Take a ferry from Manila to Orion, Bataan. The ferry terminal is located in the Seaside Esplanade at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City, Metro Manila. From Orion, take a jeepney or tricycle to Bataan National Park. The park is located around 30-45 minutes away from Orion by land transportation.

The travel time from Manila to Bataan National Park varies depending on traffic conditions and the mode of transportation. 

By bus, the travel time is around 3-4 hours, while by car, it takes around 2-3 hours. It is recommended to leave early in the morning to avoid traffic rush. Getting there by ferry can take most part of the day.

Sisiman Lighthouse is one of the top tourist spots in Bataan, not only because of its imposing architecture but because of the rewarding views you’ll get from here.

Imagine standing next to the lighthouse as you gaze at the endless ocean with its waves crashing on the jagged shores of the bay. It is also one of the best sites to catch an impressive sunrise and sunset view.

5. Mount Natib

Mount Natib is one of the best-hiking tourist spots in Bataan, giving you the chance to trail on tropical jungles and chance on a myriad of flora and fauna species. It is a dormant volcano that rises to more than 1,287 meters above sea level.

While atop, catch a breathtaking view of the vast dipterocarp forests of Bataan, including other notable mountains such as Mt. Mariveles, Mt. Balingkilat, and Mt. Arayat.

Grasslands cover the summit of Mt. Natib; thus, you’ll get a clearer view of the surrounding landscapes. After assaulting the mountain, you can have a relaxing bath at the Tala or Orani River.

• Trekking Time: 4-5 hours

6. Bataan World War II Museum

The Bataan World War II Museum is also included in the historical tourist spots in Bataan.

Here, you’ll find war memorabilia and dioramas featuring the infamous Bataan Death March in 1942.

Thousands of Filipino and American soldiers died during the March as they marched from Bataan to Tarlac for nearly 69.6 miles.

• Location/Jump-off: Balanga City

7. Bataan National Park

Bataan National Park is one of the most preserved tourist spots in Bataan. One of Central Luzon’s last ecological frontiers is home to vast dipterocarp forests with rich biodiversity.

Numerous wildlife species, including giant fruit bats, deer, civet cats, eagles, and monkeys, live here. The park covers more than 23 688 hectares.

Hiking at the park will give you the chance to view its hidden waterfalls, giant century-old trees, different orchid species, and crystal-clear streams and rivers.

If you’re lucky, you’ll chance on Rafflesia Flowers, the biggest in the world.

8. Balanga Wetland and Nature Park

The Balanga Wetland and Nature Park are one of the protected tourist spots in Bataan. It serves as a sanctuary for various species of migratory birds.

To date, more than 35 species of birds that belong to 15 bird families have been spotted in the park.

Aside from birdwatching, the park gives you a view of wetlands, mudflats, and mangrove forests. It’s best to come here during the early morning to glimpse the birds.

9. Five Fingers Cove

Aptly named as such because the site resembles the shape of five fingers when viewed from above or even from Google Earth. It is now one of the most visited tourist spots in Mariveles, Bataan.

Visiting the site gives tourists the chance to do cove hopping and experience different features and sceneries.

The coves are called Cochino’s Point, Talaga Point (home to Natsu Lagoon and Apatot Cove), Puntang Mahaba (where Pebble Cave and Nagmandala Rock Formation are located), Naiklec Point, and the Longos Kawayan Point.

In all these, you’ll have the chance to enjoy powdery beaches, cliff diving, and boat riding in one stop.

10. Corregidor Island

Corregidor Island is actually a part of Cavite province, but people associate it more with Bataan because of its proximity. It’s just some minutes of a boat ride from Bataan.

Getting on the island gives you the chance to walk among historic ruins, war tunnels, giant cannons, and other war materials. If you have the nerve, you can even go ghost-hunting.

11. Mount Mariveles

Mount Mariveles ranks among the most popular hiking destinations in the Philippines. Rising to more than 1,388 meters above sea level, this dormant volcano is also the highest peak in the entire Bataan province.

Just like Mt. Natib, Mt. Mariveles gives you a breathtaking view of dipterocarp forests and the plains of Bataan including its towns and cities.

12. Zero Kilometer Marker

The Zero Kilometer Marker is a reminder of the grueling march of Filipino and American troops from Bataan to Capas, Tarlac during the Bataan Death March.

An obelisk and a bayonet with a soldier’s helmet thrust into the ground mark these Zero KM Markers. The marker is also one of the recognized tourist spots in Bataan.

13. Pasukulan Falls

Pasukulan Falls is one of the remotest tourist spots in Bataan but one that offers a rewarding adventure of a lifetime.

Cascading elegantly for almost 200 feet, Pasukulan falls lies in the heart of the dense forests of Mt. Natib.

It is considered the tallest fall in Bataan. To get to the falls, you’ll trail across wild jungles and may have a personal encounter with wildlife species, including snakes.

But don’t worry. It’s safe to come here and encounter, as that just adds to the thrill.

14. Filipino-Japanese Friendship Tower

The Filipino-Japanese Friendship Tower is a 27-meter tall structure, symbolizing reconciliation and peace between the two nations. A Japanese Buddhist organization called, Kosei Kai Group, built the tower in 1975.

The tower also features a Buddhist bell and three pillars connected by multi-layer rings. Also known as the Bagac Friendship Bell, the tower represents the renewed friendship between the Filipinos and the Japanese.

It is one of the historical tourist spots in Bagac, Bataan.

15. Fall of Bataan Marker

The Fall of Bataan Marker commemorates April 9, 1942. During this time, Bataan officially succumbed to the Japanese when Major Gen. Edward P. King Jr. of the American forces signed the surrender document.

The marker is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Balanga, Bataan.

16. Ambon-Ambon Falls

Ambon-Ambon Falls is one of the grandest falls in Bataan, measuring more than 100 feet high. It cascades like drizzles from the heavens on the face of a scenic cliff.

Its pristine waters come from the forested slopes of Mt. Natib. Enjoy rappelling from the top of the waterfalls down to its base. Expect a challenging trek across wild terrains before finally catching sight of Ambon-Ambon falls.

17. Limutan Falls

Limutan Falls is just a few meters upstream from Ambon-Ambon Falls with a height of 30-feet. It may not be as majestic, but the surrounding forests give it an enchanting view.

It also has a naturally-built pool where you can have a rejuvenating swim. Beware. Blood leeches and snakes lurk along the trails leading to the falls. But these are thrills for a real adventurer.

18. Bataan Technology Park

The Bataan Technology Park is a techno-economic zone serving as a hub for business and employment for the people of Bataan.

It was the home of the Philippine Refugee Processing Center (PRPC), a training and transition center for refugees from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

These refugees left their countries during the Vietnam War. A museum now sits in the park, commemorating the friendship of the Filipinos and the Indochinese refugees.

The park is one of the best places to visit in Bataan.

19. Kairukan Falls

Kairukan Falls is one of the newly-discovered tourist spots in Morong, Bataan, and is rapidly growing attention from the mainstream market. It is one of the highest falls in the province, measuring more than 150 feet high.

It has a beautiful catch basin with crystal-clear waters where you can have an invigorating bath. The trail to the falls thrives with flora and fauna, including giant trees and different bird species.

The Aetas, who own the mountain, preserve the forest in an indigenous way.

• Trekking Time: 2-3 hours

20. Mount Tarak Ridge

Mount Tarak Ridge is one of the most popular hiking tourist spots in Bataan. It boasts trails leading to a pristine wilderness where you’ll get the chance to see mossy forests, a crystal-clear river, and a beautiful campsite including a variety of flora and fauna species.

You’ll also trail on a so-called knife-edge which gives a panoramic view of the remaining dipterocarp forests. It is a premium eco-tourism destination that every nature lover should not miss.

Hopefully, the local authorities will continue to implement measures to sustain the beauty and bounty of Mount Tarak Ridge.

Bataan National Park: A park in the jungle

About 130 km and some two-and-half hours drive from the country’s most famous landmark, the Luneta Park in Manila, the Bataan National Park (BNP) in Bataan province is considered as one of Luzon’s popular tourist destinations.

It serves as home to a variety of unique and endangered plant and animal wildlife and boasts of tourism facilities developed over the years, which make it stand out as a natural park.

The more than 20,000 hectares park is covered with tropical jungle and mountain terrains with unique geological features like rivers, springs and waterfalls.

First proclaimed as a national park in 1945 through Proclamation 24, BNP is one of the oldest protected areas in the Philippines.

Its status as a protected area was reaffirmed by President Duterte when he signed Republic Act 11038, also known as the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Act (Enipas) on June 22, 2018, being one of the 97 legislated protected areas listed under the law.

The protectors of BNP expect regular funding to boost the number of Bantay Gubat from 15 to 30, and a workforce that is specially dedicated to running and managing the park.

The park is shared by a total of 19 barangays from the six municipalities of Bagac, Morong, Abucay, Samal, Orani and Hermosa in Bataan.

Not to be confused, the Bataan National Park, is a natural park because of its vast expanse, said Don Guevarra, the chief information officer for Central Luzon of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). He explained that with its around 20,000 hectares qualifies BNP under the natural park category.

Along with the Subic Bay Forest Reserve, the BNP was declared a key biodiversity area (KBA), as well.

A site overview of the two areas stated that the Subic Bay Forest Reserve and the Bataan National Park are “KBA’s of international significance.”

The reason is that in the BNP is the remaining residual old-growth forest in the Zambales Biogeographical Zone.

“[There are] notable flora and fauna found in BNP, such as dipterocarp species, endemic and threatened species [like the] green-faced parrot, Philippines warty pig, Philippines brown deer, mountain rose and fire orchids,” states a profile of the BNP obtained by the BusinessMirror from the DENR Central Luzon.

In Bataan, protecting and conserving the BNP cannot be overemphasized. It is a major source of fresh water that supplies farms and provides a life support system for the diverse wildlife that thrive in the park.

Freshwater shrimps and native snails and different species of frogs are commonly found within the park.

Likewise, a total of seven watersheds are found within the area.

These are the Morong River, Almacen, Talisay, Bagac, Kabayo, Sutuin and Bayandati watersheds. Combined, they cover a total of 22,976.58 hectares of the all-important watershed area.

Birds of prey are often spotted in the BNP, a proof that the area has plenty of prey to choose from for these high-flying feathered hunters.

The BNP also hosts a still undetermined population of palm civet cats and cloud rats, and was found to be home to a still unknown population of large flying fox, the largest fruit bat in the world.

One unique find in the BNP is the rafflesia (Rafflesia manilllania), a unique plant with large, pungent-smelling flower that blooms only every 10 years.

The BNP has a vast tourism potential because of the many recreational activities and ecotourism products and services it offers, including trekking and hiking, nature photography and viewing, camping, bird watching, picnic and swimming.

It also boasts of tourism facilities that attract visitors. It has the BNP-Marine and Terrestrial Training Center in Sitio Looc, Barangay Banawang in the Bagac side of the park, and a picnic shed in the same area.

A similar facility is also available for tourists in Sitio Binutas in Barnagay Tala, in the Orani side of the park, together with railings and path walk.

The BNP boasts of a long list of natural attractions from scenic mountain peaks, unique waterfalls, unique ecosystems like caves, and all-time favorites, the lovely beaches.

It has a total of 14 waterfalls, which are all tourist magnets for nature trippers. Trekkers also climb Mt. Natib Peak, the highest peak in the BNP at 1,253 meters above sea level.

For many, the Looc beach, Matikis gulf, thermal spring found within the old caldera, the Tawawa hotspring and Bakyas hto-otspring are also not-be-missed attractions in the park.

Interviewed by the BusinessMirror via Zoom on October 18, Merliza Torre, the Community Environment and Natural Resource Officer of Bagac, Bataan, said a key to protecting and conserving the BNP is the partnership with various people’s organizations and community-based groups.

One partnership that stands out, she said, is that for the National Greening Program (NGP).

“Bataan was a logged area and was subjected to deforestation.  Although logging has already stopped because it was declared a park, stopping extractive activities remains a challenge,” Torre, also the BNP’s concurrent Protected Area Superintendent, explained.

The unbridled development in the bustling province of Bataan, according to Torre, is becoming a big problem.  Encroachment, she said, is hard to control, considering the vast expanse of the protected area.

This, she said, can also be attributed to industrialization in the province, which naturally attracts migration.

“As you may have known, Bataan has a fast-growing economy and the protected area is not a gated park so the problem is the illegal occupancy,” she said.

Other major factors that cause the park’s degradation are industrial and infrastructure development projects in the Subic Bay Metropolitan Area, Morong Special Economic Zone and the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

The environment official also said the expansion of the large coffee and mango plantations continues to threaten the BNP, aggravating the usual problem brought about by illegal logging and timber poaching, and the slash-and-burn farming activities.

As tourism activities are being eyed as part of a long-term solution to the problems that threaten the BNP, Torre said they are closely coordinating with concerned tourism officers of the Bataan and the six BNP local governments.

More importantly, however, the DENR Central Luzon led by Guevarra is helping educate the various stakeholders of the BNP to observe environmental laws, particularly Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.

“We’ve seen the problem in many Protected Areas.  So our IEC Program is also focused on having responsible eco-tourists,” says Guevarra, who noted that despite the pandemic, the garbage problem seemed to have worsened, because communities in and around the BNP have added face masks and face shields in their household wastes.

“It is sad because during our coastal and river cleanups, face masks and face shield are now part of the garbage we are hauling,” Guevarra said in Filipino.

Saving Manila Bay, too

“This year, we held a lot of online lectures with the barangays as targets because they are our frontliners. The lectures gave tips on reducing plastic waste, particularly single-use plastics that are threats to BNP’s [environment],” he said,

He added that the campaign for environmental protection and conservation in Central Luzon is aligned with the ongoing Battle for Manila Bay campaign.

Guevarra said because responsible ecotourism calls for responsible waste disposal, the information, education and communication campaign revolves around keeping the BNP not only green, but more importantly, clean and ensure it is garbage-free.

“We are talking to barangays and the communities that there are ways to avoid single-use plastics. For instance, we tell them to bring a water canister and avoid bottled water. Also, we appeal to them not to use soft drink straws and plastic stirrers because these are one-time use that we can avoid using,” he said.

How to get to bataan, getting to bataan from clark.

If you are getting to Bataan from Clark. You can ride a van from DAU Terminal in Angeles City. It will take one hour to get to Balanga and the price is 180 PHP . From Clark International Airport you can go by taxi or Grab to DAU Terminal. It will take you around 15-20 minutes to get there and prices can be around 200-300 PHP by Grab and 500 PHP by taxi.

You can also get a jeepney to San Fernando. Once in San Fernando you get the bus going to Balanga 220 PHP .

Getting to Bataan from Manila by Bus

If you are getting to Bataan from Manila by bus. It will take 3-4 hours depending on the traffic and where you catch the bus. If you are coming from Cubao it will take around 3 hours 250 PHP . Genesis and Bataan Transit are the companies going to Bataan from Cubao.

And more than 4 hours 280 PHP if you are coming from Pasay. Genesis buses are going to Bataan from Pasay.

Once in Balanga Terminal you can get a tricycle or a jeepney to move around Bataan. Prices are starting from 10 PHP depending on the distance.

Getting to Bataan from Manila by Ferry

If you are getting to Bataan from Manila by ferry to Orion. It will take you around one hour to get there. The departure of the ferry from Manila is 7 am and 5 pm. It will take 50 minutes and it costs 450 PHP . From Bataan to Manila the schedule is 9 am and 7 15 pm. There are free shuttles going to Dinalupihan and Mariveles in Bataan from Orion.

Getting to Bataan from Manila by Private Transportation

If you are getting to Bataan from Manila by private transportation. It will take you 2 hours and a half to reach there from Manila. You have to drive to North Luzon Expressway and exit in San Fernando and going thru Lubao. Or you can exit in DAU and take the SCTEX on the way to Dinalupihan.

Getting to Bataan from Baguio

If you are getting to Bataan from Baguio. There are also buses from Baguio going to Bataan. It will take 7 hours to reach there and prices are around 500 PHP .

BEST TIME TO VISIT BATAAN

If you’re traveling to Bataan you can expect considerably small changes in the city’s weather. Humidity is high in the Philippines and the warmest months here are April and May. Basically,  January to March is the best time to visit Bataan as this is the sunniest period of the year and is relatively cooler than other months.

DAILY BUDGET TO VISIT BATAAN

Many of the restaurants and hotels in Bataan are inexpensive yet more than satisfying. A full meal in the city can go for as low as 80 PHP  per person while a bottle of beer can be bought for around  50-65 PHP . Restaurant meals can be bought for around  500-800 PHP  for two people. Pretty cheap, right? And if you only have  20 PHP  in your pocket when you’re feeling pretty hungry, you can even buy plenty of street food with that.

Transportation is also cheap with jeepneys and tricycles going all over town. The main problem in transportation there are big distances and the schedule of public buses isn’t very often. Be patient and make sure you go during the day since at night time there are only a few buses and mini buses going to Bataan. If you prefer joining a tour prices are starting at 1300 PHP for a day trip with lunch, entrance fees and transportation included.

There are also budget hotels costing for around  600-900 PHP  in a promo while three-star establishments go for around  1,000-2,000 PHP , that’s only $19-38 USD ! Things to Know Before Visiting Bataan

Smoking isn’t allowed in the streets in Balanga in Bataan. If you do you will get a fine. It’s similar than Davao.

Bataan Technology Park is the former site of the Philippine Refugee Processing Center for Indochinese refugees. They were coming 80% from Vietnam and 20 % between Laos and Cambodia.

The first nuclear power plant in the country named Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. It’s located in Morong.

The Death March was the starting point of World War II. It’s located in Mariveles in Bagac.

The most popular pasalubongs are dry fishes and dry marine products.

TOURS AND ENTRANCE FEES IN BATAAN

If you want to visit Bataan tourist spots the best way to do it is by private transportation. The entrance fee to the Bataan tourist spots are usually between 30-50 PHP , so affordable. If you don’t have private transportation you can join to tours in Bataan tourist office.

There are tours starting from 1300 PHP with guide, lunch, entrance fees included and van with air conditioning. We did ourselves the tour with the Tourism office with Allan as a guide. Everything was well organized and we enjoyed a lot touring around Pawikan Festival. We had time to attend the Festival, beach party, enjoying sunsets and learn about the historical sites in Bataan.

In the tourist office you will find apart from all the detail information with the most modern system to videos about the places to visit in Bataan. There are also souvenirs and it’s so convenient to go before visiting Bataan tourist spots to have the best information. I would say is the first of this list of Bataan tourist spots that you should visit.

BATAAN TOURIST SPOTS

1. food trip in bataan.

First thing that we did and we totally recommend is food trip in Bataan. We started in Wooden Leaf eating healthy food, delicious juices, salads and pasta. It was a perfect start of the day. Hu Tieu-An a Vietnamese restaurant in Balanga Bus Terminal was great. We enjoyed salads, delicious noodle soups and our favorite Bahn Mi (typical sandwich from Vietnam).

2. Bataan World War II Museum

Bataan World War II Museum is located in Balanga City. The museum is a tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Bataan. The entrance fee is 50 PHP .

3. Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor

It’s a Memorial Site for the Filipinos who fought and died in World War II. The cross is 92 meters high and 11 meters wide. You can go up with the elevator and enjoy a 360 degree view of Bataan. The entrance fee is 30 PHP . After the hike you can enjoy the museum on the bottom where you can see pictures about World War II.

4. Zero Kilometer Death March Markers

The monument is located in Mariveles and Bagac. It was the start point of the Death March of American and Filipino soldiers in 1942. You can also find similar markers in San Fernando on the way to Pampanga.

5. Philippine-Japan Friendship Tower

The tower was conceived by Rissho Kosei Kai of Japan in 1975. It’s for simbolizing the reconciliation and friendship between Japan and the Philippines after World War II.

6. Flaming Sword

It’s a symbol of the Filipino courage and gallantry. You can see illuminated at night and it’s located in Pilar town.

7. Surrender Site Monument

You can find the Surrender Site Monument in the Bataan World Museum. It was built as a marker where Major General Edwar P. King signed the insstrument of surrender in 9th of April, 1942.

8. Bataan Technology Park

It become home for refugees of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. 10 000 people coming from Indochina. You can see in the museum the history and how they came thru Palawan to Bataan. It’s located in the hills of Morong. The museum received the visit of Pope John Paul II. The entrance fee is 50 PHP .

9. Enjoying the sunset at the beach

One of our favorite sunsets in the Philippines we enjoyed in Morong Beach. The colors were amazing and if you love sunsets as we do. Make sure you are on time with a beer or a coconut to enjoy.

10. Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is an open-air museum located in Bagac. It’s full of restaurants and there is also a beach. You can stay in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar if you want to have a luxury experience in Bataan. You can also tour around with a river cruise or riding a calesa.

11. Plaza Mayor Balanga City

It’s a commercial area where you can find restaurants and now a new hotel. It’s so beautiful at night with the lights to walk around.

12. Zip Line in Bataan

A 500 meters zip line is waiting for you in Bataan if you love adventure. It’s the longest zip line in Central Luzon. Rachel enjoyed the wide views and after enjoying this experience you can refresh yourself in Dunsulan Falls the ending point of the zip line. The activity costs 350 PHP .

13. Tree Top Adventure

You can also enjoy the Tree Top Adventure after the zip line or after swimming in Dunsulan Falls. It’s located in Morong. The entrance is 50 PHP for the Tree and the waterfalls.

Dunsulan Falls

Dunsulan Falls is a perfect visit after trying the zip line in Bataan. Since is finishing there. A perfect place for relaxing after enjoying this adventure. There is an entrance fee of 50 PHP .

Pasukulan Falls

Pasukulan Falls are located in the Southern part of Mount Natib. You can swim and enjoying activities around.

Kairukan Falls

Kairukan Falls are located at the upper side of Kairukan River. You can swim around and you can even camping if you like to stay longer around the area.

15. Kanawan Hanging Bridge

Kanawan Hanging Bridge is another beautiful Bataan tourist spots that you shouldn’t miss. You can take nice pictures and check the views. No worries is safe even the motorbikes go around. It’s free of charge.

16. Visit Old Churches

Our lady of the pilar church.

It was erected in 1607 from the elements of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque sources. It’s located in Morong.

St Joseph Cathedral

The Cathedral survived to the War that’s why is so popular. It was renovated and it’s located in Balanga City Center.

If you want to have a tour of Historical sites and Churches you can ask for information in the Tourism Office that offer packages of 2 Days starting from 2100 PHP .

17. City of Balanga Wetland & Nature Park

It’s an outdoor museum were you can see the importance of the migratory birds. There is a Festival celebrated every December called Ibong Dayo. You can get a great view of view of Mt. Samat and the Manila Bay.. There are cottages for rent if you wish. The entrance fee is 20 PHP per person.

18. Pawikan Conservation Center

We visited during Pawikan Festival. It’s located in Morong Beach. They are protecting the marine turtles. The Festival is every year in November. The entrance fee is 30 PHP . We took a drone shot where you can see how busy was Pawikan Festival.

19. Mountains of Bataan

Hike tarak ridge.

If you like hiking you can join a two day adventure. You can hike and camping. The peak is 1130 meters above the sea level. If you are planning to hike make sure you get the information in the Tourism Office in Bataan.

Mount Natib

A volcano 1250 meters above sea level where you can see amazing views of Mount Mariveles and Mount Samat.

20. Bataan National Park

Bataan National Park is located Northern half of the Province in the border with Subic in Zambales . You can find waterfalls like Pasukulan and Dunsulan Falls. There are important species of flowers and orchids.

21. Enjoy the Beach in Morong

Make sure that you are bringing your snorkeling mask to swim around the beach in Morong. The beaches are quiet and calm. Most of them are located inside the resorts and they charge around 300-500 PHP entrance fee to spend the day.

22. Beaches in Bagac

You can explore beaches around Bagac: Quinawan Beach, Aglaloma Beach, Laki Beach and Kaibubo Beach on the North.

23. Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach

There is an entrance fee 300 PHP during the day and 400 PHP if you stay overnight. You can go swimming and if you like adventure you can go cliff diving. The name of Five Fingers is because the shape looks like Five Fingers from the top view. The water is so clear and you can swim around.

24. Sisiman Mariveles Bay and Lighthouse

Sisiman Beach is a rocky Beach where you can find a lighthouse. in the southeast of Bataan Province. You can hike around and enjoy amazing sunsets.

25. Bataan Nuclear Power Plant

Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was built by former dictator Ferdinand Marcos as a solution to what was then an impending oil crisis.It was completed but never fueled. It’s located in Morong.

Where to Stay in Bataan

We have been a few times in Bataan. Last time we decided to stay at White Corals Beach Resort located in Morong Beach. It’s only one kilometer far from the town just in case you need to visit to buy something. A peaceful place where you can enjoy swimming in blue waters. Our favorite was the sunset. The staff is so friendly and the food was delicious. You can also spend your day in the resort for 500 PHP per adult and 400 PHP per kid.

Where to Eat in Bataan

Wooden leaf.

Wooden Leaf focuses in healthy food and lifestyle. You can find delicious juices, there are no sodas. The restaurant is beautiful with delicious and healthy food. We really love the juices, salads and pasta that we tried. It’s located in Balanga City Center next to the market.

Hu Tieu-An And Bahn Mi

A Vietnamese restaurant located in Balanga Bus Terminal. You can find noodle soup, the traditional Bahn Mi which is one of my favorite ones. Salads were great and prices were affordable. As always in the Philippines friendly and helpful staff in the restaurant.

Festivals in Bataan

Pawikan festival.

You can go every month of the year and you will find Festivals. We attended to Pawikan Festival and we really liked it. It’s celebrated in November. You will enjoy dance, music and even a beach party during the festival. The most important part is the realizing of the baby turtles.

There are other Festivals in Bataan like Pagbubunyi Festival celebrated in May with a night procession. Kuraldal Festival that includes a parade celebrated in June.

The Pawikan Conservation Center in Morong is a sanctuary for endangered sea turtles – specifically Olive Ridley , one of the five species of marine turtles found in the Philippines. The center also offers educational programs about their protection and rehabilitation.

You can visit the center to learn more about their efforts (and donate if you want to). It’s an enlightening experience since you will learn about the sea turtles and how the volunteers keep track and take care of them.

Make sure to visit during the nesting season ( November to March ). Specifically, head there in November to see the turtles lay their eggs and January to February to witness the hatchlings being released back to the sea. Obviously, there are no specific dates on when the eggs will watch, but if you are around the area you can call the center and ask them to update you of possible hatchlings.

The Zero Kilometer Death March Marker (also known as the “KM 0” marker) is a significant historical site located in Mariveles, Bataan. It marks the starting point of the Bataan Death March , a tragic event during World War II where in thousands of Filipinos and Americans were forced to walk from Mariveles (Bataan) to Capas (Tarlac), covering a distance of about 104 kilometers.

The march took several days and was characterized by extreme brutality, harsh conditions, and a lack of food and water. Thousands of prisoners died along the way due to exhaustion, disease, and maltreatment by their captors.

This site is often the start of historical tours covering the events of WWII in Bataan, Pampanga, and Tarlac.

You might be wondering why the place is called Five Fingers . It’s because it consists of five islands with four coves in between, which resembles five fingers when viewed from above. The set of coves include: Conchino’s Point , Talaga Beach , Naiclec Point , and Longos Kawayan .

Make a stop at the refreshing Papaya River (one of the cleanest mountain rivers I’d seen) before setting camp at Tarak Ridge and then preparing for the 2-hour trek to the summit the following day for the sunrise views. The summit will reward you of Manila Bay, Corregidor Island, and distant cities of Manila and Cavite.

A trip to Bataan feels like a trip back in time. It is a breathtaking destination where history meets the mountains and the sea. If this is your first time to visit the historical province, here is an ultimate guide to the best Bataan tourist spots that you can add to your itinerary.

As a tropical country, the Philippines has only two seasons: the dry season and the wet season. In general, it is best to time your travels to the province of Bataan during the dry season (November to April), especially if you’re traveling by sea.

The Holy Week season in the Philippines (from March to April), is one of the best times to visit Bataan if you want to join the activities and immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions. However, expect that many Bataan tourist spots get crowded during this time.

May is the hottest month of the year in Bataan while January is the coldest. If you are planning a trek, do check the local weather. If you plan to go birdwatching, the best time to go is between October to March where migrating birds are of spotted starting at 6 o’clock in the morning.

You have the option to go to Bataan by private transport like a hired van or your own car, or a commuter bus.

The province of Bataan is about 124 kilometers away from Manila. This makes for a good 2.5-hour leisurely drive. It is best to leave early in the morning to avoid the rush hour gridlock.

From Manila, take the North Luzon Expressway then take the San Fernando toll exit or the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX).

If you take the San Fernando toll exit, drive towards the Jose Abad Santos Avenue, formerly known as the Olangapo-Gapan Road. Drive all the way to Lubao, a municipality in Pampanga and Dinalupihan, a municipality in Bataan.

Once you get to the Layac junction, head towards the Roman Super Highway that will lead you to the city center of Balanga in Bataan.

If you’re taking the SCTEX route, simply take the Dinalupihan exit. Then make a right turn at Roman Super Highway towards the city center of Balanga.

If you don’t want to bring private transportation to Bataan, hopping on a bus from Manila is the most convenient way of traveling. Travel time by bus is roughly 3 hours from Manila to Bataan.

Several bus lines, including Genesis , Bataan Transit, Victory Liner , and Sinulog are found in Avenida (also known as Rizal Avenue) and Sampaloc in Manila, as well as in Pasay City, Caloocan City, and Cubao in Quezon City.

Victory Liner and Sinulog bus lines only pass by Dinalupihan in Bataan and go straight to Olongapo City in Pampanga instead of Balanga in Bataan. From Olongapo, you can take another bus that will take you to the city center of Balanga.

Major airlines fly to Clark International Airport in Pampanga daily. From the airport, hail a cab or take the bus going to the Dau Bus Terminal. From here, you can ride a UV Express, a van utilized as a form of public transportation, which would take you to Balanga City in Bataan.

If you want a fast way to go to Bataan, simply hop on the Manila-Bataan Ferry Boat at the Esplanade-Seaside Terminal in SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. This will take you straight to Port Capinpin in Orion, a municipality in Bataan, in just 50 minutes!

Operated by 1Bataan Integrated Transport System. Inc. , the ferry boat travels three times a day from Manila to Bataan.

If you’re taking a tricycle up to Mt. Samat, 4 persons can actually fit the tricycle. However, better keep it down to 3 persons maximum because some parts of the road are pretty steep.

Wear comfortable clothes and bring your own water bottle for the walking tours. Even on a cloudy day, wear sunblock and sunglasses.

Among the 7,107 islands we have that boast of a picturesque landscape and just breathtaking spots and natural resources you must visit, there’s Bataan: a small, beautiful peninsula that finds its sweet spot between the West Philippine Sea and the Manila Bay.

Besides the annual Araw ng Kagitingan that falls on April 9th (also known as Bataan Day to the locals), as far as local tourism goes, Bataan is pretty underrated — and this is coming from someone who has grown up in the quaint province all her life! Indeed, Bataan poses itself to be a burgeoning tourist destination if given the time of day — the province is surrounded by different kinds of bodies of water, with a pristine coastline that easily rivals the beaches of nearby places such as La Union and Batangas!

The best part of Mount Samat, however, has to be the view up the cross (yes, you CAN climb the cross!) that shows a 360-degree view of Bataan — sprawling mountains, lush plains, and vibrant towns, with the cool breeze swishing in your face.

6. Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga, Balanga City

While Bataan’s sights may paint of a sleepy, idyllic backwater, its capital, Balanga City portrays a different picture entirely — a sprightly city with an Old World charm, married with twenty-first-century elements, like its own Starbucks, for example. The magnificent Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga, located in the heart of the city, cannot be missed. The plaza comes to life especially at night, with a spectacle of lights and dancing fountains. A three-hour trek will lead you to a majestic sight — pristine waters cascading from almost 200 feet above and into a pool. Judging from these photos, that trip is well worth it.

4. Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an, Morong

One of the most interesting hole-in-the-wall places in Bataan is Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an in Morong, a humble, unassuming eatery that sells Vietnamese-influenced dishes, something you’d never think you’d see in this tranquil town. Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an opened in the 90’s, after refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia sought temporary shelter in Bataan’s Philippine Refugee Processing Center (PRPC). Two decades later, the refugees have long gone, yet this chapter in world history lives on through this modest joint. Must-trys are the Vietnamese noodle soup,  hu tieu , and their special take on the  banh mi .

3.  Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park, Orani

In a quaint village called Tala in Orani, is a scenic haven by the mountains. Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park is a mountainside resort, decked with villas and a beautiful cliffside pool overlooking a view of lush mountains and trees.

Las Casas has been a popular setting for period films and television shows in recent years, such as GMA-7’s Zorro, the sleeper hit Heneral Luna, and Lav Diaz’ 8-hour film Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis. Book a night at their heritage house, take a dip in the sea as a  calesa  strides by. It’s just like being transported back in time.

•  Follow the signs towards Balanga : Continue driving towards Balanga and look for the signs pointing to the city. There are also local landmarks and tourist information centers that you can use to guide you.
•  Arrive at Balanga : After approximately 2 hours of driving, you will reach Balanga, Bataan. Park your car in a designated area and start exploring the city and its surroundings.
• Take a bus from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) : From NAIA Terminal 3, take a bus bound for Balanga, Bataan. The bus company Genesis is one of the companies that operate on this route. The journey will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
• Arrive at Balanga Central Terminal : Once you arrive at Balanga Central Terminal, look for jeepneys bound for Balanga.
•  Take a jeepney to your destination : From Balanga Central Terminal, take a jeepney to your desired destination in Balanga Bataan Tourists Spots .

10 Best BATAAN TOURIST SPOTS (Heritage & Beyond)

I was back in Bataan, through an invite from the Tourism Office to cover Padyakan sa Bataan as well as to explore tourist spots and historical sites in the province.

It was a year ago when I also traveled within the province through a Press trip invitation from the Tourism Regional Office. At that time, we explored the provinces of Pampanga and Bataan. Since I came back to the province, I decided to update this blog post to include the sites that we’ve explored during our recent trip.

Here are the tourist spots and attractions you shouldn’t miss in Bataan.

1. Bataan Tourism Center

This should be your first stop in exploring the province. Bataan Tourism Center will provide you all the necessary information about attractions to visit, activities, and also food to enjoy. This tourism information hub is open every day to cater to the needs and answer the questions of every tourist.

Bataan Tourism Center also houses an Audio-Visual Room, Exhibit Hall, and the Provincial Tourism Office. This is the first stop to get all the necessary information needed for the trip, and also the last to buy your pasalubong .

2. Bataan World War II Museum

After having our lunch at Trihouse Restaurant , we traveled to our first historical site for the day – Bataan World War II Museum.

The place is located within the vicinity of Balanga Elementary School. So we passed through the school grounds until we reached the two-story structure. The museum serves as a tribute to all Filipino and American soldiers who sacrificed their lives last World War II  during the Fall of Bataan, followed by the historic Bataan Death March.

Before we even entered the museum, Sir Alan Valbuena of Bataan Tourism showed us the “Surrender site marker,” a life-size statue of Major General Edward King when he signed the document stating that they were surrendering the Philippines to Japan on April 9, 1942.

In the museum, we were greeted by the staff. Before we could even explore the memorabilia of the war inside, they let us watch a video first detailing the story of how Bataan has fallen to the hands of the Japanese invaders.

It was an interesting video showing the timeline of the history and explaining the details in the simplest way possible.

On the second floor, we’ve witnessed the riveting images of the people and children who suffered during the war. Beside this is a room dedicated to the memorabilia of the former first lady- Luz Banzon Magsaysay, wife of former President Ramon Magsaysay. It is filled with photos, clothes, furniture, and personal belongings of the former first lady.

3. Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor

I remember we were about to visit the Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor during my press trip in Bataan last year with the Regional Tourism Office, but that didn’t push through. During that time, there was a huge event, and people were all walking going to Mt. Samat, and they didn’t allow vehicles.

This time, finally, I was able to visit this famous site in the province. It took us about 20 minutes of land travel before we arrived at the site.  It was then that I realized that the cross was huge! And there are a lot of visitors at that time.

Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor was built in 1970 as a memorial cross for the sacrifices and bravery of Filipinos who fought and perished during World War II.

There is an elevator inside this huge cross that would take you up for you to enjoy the 360-degree view of the Bataan Peninsula. It was a good way to enjoy the beauty of the province as well as to reflect and pay respect to the heroes of the past war.

4. Zero Kilometer Marker of Bataan Death March

If you’re looking for it, this is just located beside the Jollibee .

In this same spot was the start of the Bataan Death March on April 10, 1942, where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers perished. This shrine is a way to pay respect to all of our heroes who sacrificed for our freedom against the Japanese invaders.

5. Sisiman Lighthouse

We weren’t able to visit the picturesque Sisiman Lighthouse, but I’ve already visited the place during my travel to Five Fingers Cove a couple of years ago.

Sisiman lighthouse is lightless after typhoon Pedring destroyed it in 2011, but it’s still a sight to behold, especially during sunset.

6. Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach

It was a couple of years ago when I traveled to Mariveles to visit the booming summer destination at that time – Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach.

The experience can not be considered island hopping because there was no island separated from the mainland that we explored. We hopped from one cove to another. Five Fingers Cove’s name was derived from its look on the map. When you try to check Google Maps, the location is similar to your fingers.

This is a total adventure and summer getaway. We explored beaches, cliffs, and rock formations that it made me realized that hey, there is such a place like this in Mariveles? I was amazed by the natural charm and beauty.

Our last stop was Laki Beach, where we had our lunch and spent the entire afternoon. The beach was pristine, and we had a relaxing experience. I just hope that tourists will continue to protect this beach as I’ve recently been getting messages from readers that Laki Beach’s waste problem is getting worse. Well, that made me sad. I hope the owners would do some measures to protect the beach, and maybe they should also tap the help of the government to protect the beach.

 7. Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

I remember the first time I visited Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, a few years ago.

It was our company’s team building. I was just a regular working dude then, never in my life have I imagined that I would be a travel blogger. Seriously. I remember I was amazed by those old structures, but my appreciation has no depth. I find the structures beautiful, but my mind was not creative enough to appreciate its history. I’m glad that I’ve grown these past years.

The most memorable for me on that first visit was all the good times I had with my workmates until we got drunk. I had those moments when in the middle of the night, I would look out the window and see some “Guardia sibil” walking or women in Filipiniana. Then, I had that split-second confusion, Did we travel back in time? Was that a ghost? Then the logical part of my brain would kick in, “Oh, they’re the staff of Las Casas.

After five years, I’m back at Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar, as part of the travel writers invited by the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 3 for a press trip. And I can say that I am back as a grown person, better and matured, from a usual dude to a travel enthusiast and writer who appreciates and puts more value on culture and heritage.

I noticed there are lots of improvements in Las Casas. There are more structures, and the reception area was transferred from a small house to a vast mansion that can be reached after crossing a scenic bridge.

Las Casas simply brings you back to the past, especially during the Spanish colonial times. The old houses in the complex were acquired by the owner, Jose “Jerry” Acuzar, from various parts of the country, transferred to the complex, then meticulously rebuilt and restored. It took a lot of years before structures were built, and there is still a lot of construction going on.

One of the most exciting activities you could try in Las Casas is the River Tour. It’s a cruise around the property on a balsa passing through a narrow canal surrounded by houses. We passed through some brick walls, verandas, and balconies that depict the old Manila. It was like a replica of estero during the old Manila. It’s sad that while I was enjoying the cruise, I couldn’t help but ask. What happened? Why weren’t we able to preserve these? If what I was seeing was accurate, the old Manila looked like the canals of Venice or other European countries.

Another excellent experience there is the Heritage Tour. I remember this was offered to us on my first travel to Las Casas years ago during our team building, but I didn’t participate because I was busy drinking. Hahaha! But now, I will not miss the chance to join the tour.

It all started at Casa Lubao. Then from one old house to another, the tour guide explained the houses’ history. Each house has a distinct story, worthy of being shared. We were already in the third house when I got a message from a fellow blogger that they were looking for me because it was time for lunch.

We traveled through the kalesa and toured the entire place. Then we had our lunch at Hotel De Oriente. This is just a replica of the original hotel, which was the first luxury hotel in Binondo during the Spanish colonial era.

What amazed us are the wooden sculptures with intricate designs surrounding the hotel’s lobby. It’s a perfect setting for any photo sessions.

We left Las Casas after lunch and traveled for a few hours going to Mt. Samat National Shrine. Unfortunately, there was this significant pilgrimage at that time, and they were not allowing vehicles to get in close to the spot. If we would insist on going there, we had to hike for a few kilometers.

Our guides decided not to pursue, so we traveled to Balanga, checked in at The Plaza Hotel explored more of Balanga by chilling at The Beanery Coffee Shop. Then, we had dinner at a local restaurant.

8. Balanga City (Christmas Season)

One of the best ways to discover more of a specific destination is to go to the market. At night, we went to the market and experienced the Christmas tiangge there. I bought 2 T-shirts, while my travel buddies bought clothes, slippers and many more. Fantastic, they have a shirt for my size. Hahaha!

We went back to our hotel fully satisfied with what Bataan has to offer – the scenery, history, and food. Thumbs up!

9. Bataan National Park

After our breakfast, we traveled to Orani, Bataan, for some nature trip.

Bataan National Park is a protected area in the mountainous part of the province. It has a total of 23.6 hectares of thick forest and mountains encompassing Orani, Hermosa, Samal, Abucay, Balanga, Bagac, and Morong.

The structures of the viewing deck looked old but can still be renovated and used. There are some plans by the local Tourism office to renovate the place for the upcoming promotion of Orani as the next destination for nature lovers.

10. Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park

We planned to have our lunch at the Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park located at the jump-off point for hikers and mountain climbers going to the view deck, Pasukulan Falls and Mt. Natib. This is a mountain resort with lots of spots overlooking the mountainous parts of Orani. But before that, the staff let us experience their amenities, some adventure activities like wall climbing, rappelling, and zip line!

I wasn’t able to try wall climbing because obviously, I am overweight. I know that if I tried wall climbing, I’d just be embarrassing myself. Hahaha! I need more time to get fit, and when that time comes, I’m going back.

Ang strong. LOL!

By the end of the activities, we all tried the zipline! Of course, having fear of heights, I still got scared a bit. I was able to do the zipline in Lake Sebu in South Cotabato , the highest zipline in Southeast Asia, so this will just be a piece of cake. Hahaha!

Our tour ended with a sumptuous lunch at the resort.

Whenever I hear about Bataan, the instant concept that comes to my mind is the idea of the death march. Though it may sound tragic and all, I can assure you that when I got to visit the place, I was left speechless with the number of spots to visit and the activities to try.

In this article, allow me to shorty share with you the scenic spots in the province.

Bataan Tourist Spots

1.Shrine of Valor

Also known as the Dambana ng Kagitingan, this Bataan Tourist Spot is widely known throughout the archipelago. Situated at the peak of Mt. Samat National Park in Pilar, the cross at the top of the place is a bitter and sweet reminder of the thousands of people who sacrificed their lives back in the Japanese occupation era. This also serves as a viewing deck of the area. At the bottom part, there is a 64-stepped staircase that serves as a commemoration of the arrival of the president on the historic fall of Bataan back in the World War II era.

2. Bataan Nuclear Power Plant

This is a safe facility. I repeat, no need for you to worry because it is secure. Why? It was built, but it was never used. So, no worries about radiation and other harmful effects to one’s health. This educational tour will give you a glimpse of the step by step of energy production.

3. Ambon- Ambon and Limutan Waterfalls

The 60-feet high waterfall will be a sight to behold. Feel the beauty of nature as you explore this Bataan tourist spot and at the same time, beat the heat by taking a bath at the basin part of the waterfalls.

4.Pawikan Conservation Center

The initiative of the province of Bataan to conserve the Philippine marine turtles is indeed admirable. Once hatchlings are declared to be healthy and well, they are being released in the ocean. This way, their population is protected.

5.Bataan Techno Park

This place is a remembrance of how we welcomed and cared for the Vietnamese refugees during the Vietnam war. In going here, you will see a commemoration of the structure built for them back then along with the fusion of culture of the Vietnamese to the people of Bataan. It is believed that the way people in Bataan prepare some of their dishes is similar to the Vietnamese. A manifestation of cultural fusion and adaptation.

6.Wetland and Nature Park

Are you interested in bird watching? Then heading to this Bataan tourist spot is a great idea. The place is flocked with a lot of migratory birds in a particular month of the year. The wetlands along with the lush mangrove are estimated to be visited by about 25,000 migratory birds yearly.

7.Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

Situated at Bagac, being here will make you feel that you are back in the days of Maria Clara. The houses, the costumes, and everything in it resemble the old towns of the country back in the Spanish occupation. This Bataan Tourist Spot is famous for its scenic spots, educational tour, and beach escapade.

8. The Ground Zero

The 100-kilometer Death March had two-kilometer zero. Once it is in Mariveles while the other one is in Bagac. Seeing this significant marker allows you to somehow know a part of the history of the country and its people.

9. San Miguel Rock

Situated in Barangay Sisiman in Mariveles, the San Miguel Rock, or also locally known as “susong dalaga” is found. Though it may not be spectacular at all, I can see a lot of potential for this rock formation. An activity center for those who are fond of rock climbing or the likes for instance.

10.Orani Fish Port

Looking for some bargaining of seafood? You’re in the right place! With the teeming life of the seafood industry here, I am sure that you will find the entirely fresh food that you want in your perfectly suited budget.

11.Plaza de Mayor

The European vibe of this plaza is enough to make you feel delighted. The city hall, mall, hotel, and all other nearby establishments add up to the overall vibe of the place. During a special occasion, events and shows are also held in this plaza.

12. Mt. Binutas and Sinagtala

The view from the Sinagtala can bring you the solitude that you’ve been searching for. For one, the surrounding is filled with greeneries matched with the fresh cold air. Having a glimpse of the place from the top is never a bad idea.

13.The Surrender Site and Bataan World War II Museum

Situated inside the Balanga elementary school is the actual site when back then American Major General King signed the surrender document to the Japanese. Also known as the Fall of Bataan, this place deserves a visit for a thousand reasons. One of which is to give utmost respect.
