Morocco Guided Tours & Guided Vacations

EXPERIENCE WITH TAUCK

A day of immersion in Berber culture and cuisine, including dining, music, and entertainment under desert tent, and a camel ride

TAUCK VALUE INCLUDES

Lunch in a terraced home in Moulay Idriss near the ruins at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Lunch at Rick's Cafe in Casablanca, modeled on the one in the film Casablanca

Exclusive dinners in beautiful riads in Fes – rooftop farewell reception (weather permitting) in Marrakech

Choice of a Moroccan cooking class, a photography tour of coastal gem Essaouira, or a pampering hammam spa treatment

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Experiences of a lifetime

Experience the heart of Morocco, Africa at Europe's doorstep… ancient cities, medinas, kasbahs, and souks… windswept coastline and desert treasures… on a 10-day journey through a timeless land...

Visit the leather tanneries of fes, a trip through time at the ancient leather tanneries of fes.

Like an artist's tray of paints, the huge vats of dyes that decorate the urban landscape around the redolent tanneries of Fes are awe-inspiring... no less than the processes the tanners use to dye and dry leather, virtually unchanged since medieval times. The tanners' tools include water, limestone, pigeon droppings, and their bare feet and hands to knead and dye the leather to its required consistency, which may eventually grace the souks of the medina as exquisite purses and slippers.

Dinner in the desert, Berber-style

Travel by 4x4 vehicle to a berber-style dinner in a desert camp.

In the desert outside Marrakech, ancient Berber villages preserve time-honored folkways and rituals – like the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony – that have survived for centuries. Ride aboard a 4x4 vehicle to one of these villages for tea with the village chief and a crash-course in Berber culture. Then it's on to our desert camp, where dinner is served Berber-style under a tent with musical entertainment. Experience local customs like riding a camel... smoking shisha (using a hubbly-bubbly pipe, or hookah, to smoke flavored tobacco)... or having your hands or feet decorated with traditional henna designs!

Four Seasons Resort Marrakech

Nights 6, 7, 8 and 9

Capturing the magic of Marrakech...

Imagine a place where you can lose yourself in the magic of Marrakech from the comfort of a luxury resort. A place where Moorish gardens surround silvery swimming pools... where jasmine and roses perfume the air... where exotic experiences are part of daily life and where your wish is our pleasure. Imagine Four Seasons Resort Marrakech... where traditional values and contemporary comforts unite.

Tauck filled every day with the variety and culture of the country we enjoy and have come to expect. The architecture was amazing and the food was fabulous!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Morocco; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Morocco to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Morocco. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

To enjoy this active tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. We recommend that you pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in to appreciate fully what Morocco has to offer.

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two-to-three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty. Your journey is moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures and extended motorcoach travel.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

It's hot and sunny for most of the year in Morocco. During the peak summer months it gets uncomfortably hot especially in Marrakech, Fes and southwest Morocco. Rabat and Casablanca are a bit more comfortable in the peak of summer because they benefit from a cooler ocean breeze.

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

As Morocco is a Muslim country, dressing modestly will make both you and the people you meet on your travels more comfortable.  Generally this means covering the shoulders and knees.  Women will need to cover their hair only when we visit the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.  Scarves will be provided on the tour.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Morocco:

  • Cotton, cotton/synthetic and linen clothing
  • Light weight shirts, pants, capri pants and dresses
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Jacket and tie and casually-elegant attire for fine dining
  • Comfortable walking shoes that will work well on uneven or cobblestone pavement
  • Shoes will only need to be removed when the tour visits the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca.  Please bring at least one pair of socks for this visit.
  • Hat (a wide brimmed hat is recommended)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Soap leaves, travel packets of tissues, handkerchiefs and hand sanitizer
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Group of travellers and Intrepid leader look over Ait Benhaddou

When people throw around the word ‘remarkable’, they’re probably referring to places like Morocco.

In a place where riding a camel over dunes at sunset is not unusual, where tagines spiked with saffron perfume the air and Amazigh people herd goats on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the word remarkable just doesn't cut it. Whether you're wandering the wind-battered port town of Essaouira, exploring the famous Kasbah in Aït Benhaddou or sleeping beneath the Saharan stars , a healthy dose of Maghreb hospitality will make a Morocco tour truly unforgettable.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

13. Tangier

The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewelry

Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

Morocco travel faqs, is it safe to travel to morocco.

Morocco is an extremely safe country to travel to as long as you abide by the local culture and customs.

Do I need a visa to travel to Morocco?

  • Australia: No - Not required
  • Belgium: No - Not required
  • Canada: No - Not required
  • Germany: No - Not required
  • Ireland: No - Not required
  • Netherlands: No - Not required
  • New Zealand: No - Not required
  • South Africa: Yes - in advance (in general, visa processing can take approximately 20 working days)
  • Switzerland: No - Not required
  • UK: No - Not required
  • USA: No - Not required

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas.

Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Americans and British citizens do not require a visa to visit Morocco for stays up to 90 days. All other nationalities should check with the Moroccan Embassy or Consulate in their country for up-to-date visa information.

What are the toilets like in Morocco?

Morocco's toilets are a mixture of modern flushable toilets and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Morocco?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Morocco. Your leader will advise where filtered water can be found, and some hotels provide it. For environmental reasons, we suggest carrying a reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic waste.

Is tipping customary in Morocco?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Morocco, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is generally standard practice. Taxi drivers and porters will also accept tips, 10 dirhams is usually sufficient in this case.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

What is the internet access like in Morocco?

Morocco's cities have internet access available in internet cafes and hotel lobbies. In some cases, free Wi-Fi can be accessed in public places. Less internet access is available in rural areas, so be prepared to 'disconnect' when traveling out of Morocco's big cities.

Can I use my cell phone in Morocco?

Cell phone coverage is generally very good in Morocco's cities and metropolitan areas, although coverage can be limited in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Morocco.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Morocco?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash.

What is ATM access like in Morocco?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When traveling out of the city, be prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

Where will I stay in Morocco?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Morocco you may find yourself staying in a:

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. The riad is the Moroccan traditional house, normally with two or more stories around an Andalusian-style courtyard that contained a fountain. Riads were the stately city homes of the wealthiest citizens such as merchants and courtiers.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Does my trip to Morocco support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Morocco directly support our foundation partners, Education For All and High Atlas Foundation. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Education For All

Education for All allows girls in remote areas of Morocco to access education and prepare for successful careers. Donations from our trips help girls in the High Atlas Mountains through secondary school, bringing a generation of women out of the cycle of illiteracy, poverty and early marriage.

Find out more or make a donation.

High Atlas Foundation

The High Atlas Foundation helps communities in Morocco implement human development initiatives such as organic agriculture, women's empowerment, youth development, education and health initiatives. Donations from our trips directly support their sustainable agriculture programs, which fund fruit tree and wild medicinal plant nurseries, irrigation infrastructure, organic certification, technical skills-building, carbon sequestration, and commercialization.

Does my Intrepid trip include airfare?

While our Intrepid trips include many modes of transport, from tuk-tuks to overland vehicles, bullet trains and feluccas, airfare to and from your home country is not included in your tour package.

Destination Must-See's

Morocco ms1

Rick’s Cafe:

Featured in the blockbuster movie Casablanca from 1942, a visit to this restaurant is sure to spark your nostalgia. Feel like you’ve stepped into the movie as you surround yourself in the scenery reminiscent of the film. Although this is a recreation, not where it was filmed, your imagination will take hold as you watch the film on repeat and get a taste of what it was like back in the day.

Morocco ms2

Casablanca:

Morocco’s largest city, main port and most cosmopolitan city, this bustling metropolis and economic hub is sprinkled with tree-lined parks and charming colonial architecture. Its most famous landmark is the elaborate Hassan II Mosque, one of the world’s largest mosques built on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Morocco ms3

Mud brick homes:

These homes have been used throughout the world but are extremely popular in the Middle East, India and North Africa. A mud brick is made of mud or clay that is mixed with straw and hardened by baking it in the sun or a kiln. It is very inexpensive and is environmentally friendly. And most importantly, keeps houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Morocco ms4

Moroccan people:

The Berber people are Morocco’s original inhabitants but it has been touched by many cultures because of its location. As a result, its people are amongst the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. Today, it is considered an Arab nation, but you can see the diversity of the country, particularly in the variety of languages spoken – French, Spanish, Arabic and Berber dialects.

Destination Must-Do's

Morocco md1

Enjoy the cuisine:

When visiting Morocco you have to try a local favorite – stuffed bread. It is comparable to a flat bread sandwich in America with a Moroccan touch. This savory meal is filled with traditional fillings including beef or lamb suet, onions, parsley, and Moroccan spices – ginger, white pepper, coriander, turmeric, allspice, and cinnamon.

Morocco md2

See the Markets:

Souks, local markets, immerse you in the culture of morocco. Every Moroccan town has a souk quarter typically named after the day of the week they are open. No matter where you are you will find busy aisles lined with vendors selling many types of products – rugs, jewelry, metals, wood and pottery, clothing, leather goods and fresh food.

Morocco md3

Visit Rug Makers:

Traditionally, Moroccan rugs were hand woven and tied by the Berber tribe women and can take up to a year to complete. Some rugs are made as a floor covering and others are woven to hang from the wall like a tapestry. Rug designs typically depict a piece of history passed down from generation to generation, or tell the story of the weaver’s life, representing things from femininity to spirituality.

Morocco md4

Feed the Monkeys:

Learn all about MonkeyWatch, a primate eco-tourism, anti-poaching conservation program run by the Moroccan Primate Foundation in Ifrane National Park. It works to protect the Barbary apes and macaques that live in the forests of the park. Visitors will even get a chance to feed these wonderful creatures.

Expert Advice

diana

If you have some extra time before your tour begins to explore Casablanca, you’ll find plenty to do! Venture out to Safi, a port that has been of importance since Roman times, and view its grand ramparts and the fortress of Dar el Bahar.

Morocco e2

You’ll find many unique gifts in the souks (local markets). When venturing out during the day, it is typically very warm so be sure to wear loose, breathable but conservative clothing. In Moroccan culture, long skirts or slacks would be appropriate, but please no short hemlines, tank tops or tight fitting clothing.

Morocco e3

You’re in for a treat as you discover the flavors of Morocco! Be sure to try fish tagine, a mqualli (or sauce made with ginger, saffron and oil) combined with chermoula, olives and preserved lemons to add some zest and extra flavor!

Words From Guided Morocco Tours Clients

Anouar our driver was fantastic! Amin our tour guide was very reliable and helpful! We had an amazing experience, Anouar was exceptionally hospitable to our needs and even changed his plans according to our schedule. Amin took us around the medina in Marrakesh and gave us a brief and suitable explanation of the history and culture in the city. He was was very reliable, made us laugh and spent some time having tea...

We have been completely amazed by the whole service. We were highly recommended to use tourradar only and very happy we did. To recap: none of the tours offered interested us and tourradar sent a message to the operators who would accept to taylor made their price to the tour we requested. GUIDED MOROCCO TOURS+ (GM+) accepted to tour my mother, single, on her own, well passed her seventies, on a "all by herself trip" to discover. I was kept up...

An amazing trip with our guide Anouar!!! Booked it with short notice prior to the tour start and and during insanely busy dates but still, accommodation was stunning both nights, nicely equipped for cold winter nights and food during the trip was really nice! As said, it was high season and yet, somehow, Anouar managed to avoid rush hours for other tourism buses and minivans at most places so it was not as crowded. But more importantly, everyone we met, from...

Superlative. Excellent. Exceptional. We are very well travelled and we know a professional well organized tour operator when we come across one. Ten days across much of Morocco in the most enjoyable way with Amir of Guided Morocco Tour, could not have asked for more for our 25th anniversary. Recommended without any reservations.

Don’t hesitate to book. For what you see and do it’s an amazing deal. We saw everything we wanted to see, never felt rushed and the accommodations were top notch the entire way. Idir was patient with our group of 5 between stopping for shopping and pictures and kept us on track without making us feel rushed. He always checked in even with my son to make sure we were enjoying our time. . We felt safe and comfortable even late at night on our own free time.

Everything that the tour promises is delivered to a very high standard. As Guided Moroccan Tours (GMT) provide private tours, do your research so you can customise your tour to suit. We found our tour guide, Anouar, extremely friendly and spoke very good English. Anouar was very knowledgeable...

Note: Flights may not be available on all departures.

You can find more details on the Before You Depart page.

Day 1: Arrive in Casablanca

morocco escorted tours

Apologies to Bogie, but here begins a beautiful friendship with Casablanca and this amazing country. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive program will be greeted at the airport by our Tour Director and transferred to our hotel in Casablanca with some time to relax after our flight. Later, our day concludes with an orientation meeting and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Casablanca – Marrakesh

morocco escorted tours

Today we start to discover Morocco's largest city and economic capital, Casablanca, the best representation of the modern side of Morocco. Casablanca’s history—well, it’s complicated. Influences range from French to Spanish to Portuguese to Arab to British. We'll begin our city tour with a visit to the only Jewish Museum in the Arabic-speaking world. Next, we'll visit the ornate Hassan II Mosque (with interior admission included), which has the tallest minaret in the world. We'll continue to Aln Diab Corniche for a pleasant stroll along the coast before stopping at Mohammed V Square. We'll visit the Habous Quarter, one of the oldest areas of Casablanca built by the French in the 1930s in an attempt to solve housing shortages. After our visit, we'll depart for Marrakesh.

Day 3: Marrakesh

morocco escorted tours

After breakfast, we'll enjoy a tour of Marrakesh, also known as the "Red City." This majestic town is filled with palaces, gardens, markets, and mosques. We'll visit the stunning,19th-century Bahia Palace where we'll see the intricate work done by local artisans. From there, we'll explore the artisan quarters and the colorful souks to witness and experience daily life in Marrakesh. Next, we'll continue to Dar El Bacha Museum. It's one of the medina's finest examples of Riad architecture and is dripping with Moroccan Zellige (colorful geometric tilework), intricate white plasterwork, and heavy, carved cedar-wood lintels. We'll wander past palm readers, snake charmers, acrobats, and musicians as we make our way to the medina's main square, the famous Jemaa el-Fna. This evening, we'll return to the medina to enjoy a typical Moroccan dinner with entertainment.

Day 4: Marrakesh

morocco escorted tours

A free day to explore Marrakesh! Consider an optional hammam and massage to relax and unwind or join our optional Berber Experience in the Atlas Mountains where we'll enjoy a traditional Berber lunch with bread and mint tea and visit a cooperative run by women that extracts Argan oil. Late this afternoon, we'll come together for a cooking class that takes place on the terrasse of the villa in a spectacular décor with the Atlas Mountains in the background. We'll enjoy an exceptional gastronomic experience of our award-winning chef's culinary world, drawing from his extensive knowledge of North Africa's rich food culture. From picking out fresh produce in the souks of his hometown of Marrakesh to sampling spices for the perfect flavor to watching artisinal fillo dough made from scratch in front of our eyes. The chef will unlock the secrets of the recipes he's mastered over the years for us. We'll enjoy dinner with our chef and leave with an inside perspective of one of the world's most highly cherished cuisines.

Day 5: Marrakesh – Boumalne Dades

morocco escorted tours

Our journey through majestic Morocco continues across the High Atlas Mountains and the spectacular Tichka Pass to Boumalne Dades. We’ll stop for a brief tour of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This giant fortification, which showcases a unique example of pise clay architecture, has been a filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones. We'll have time for an independent lunch before we continue to our final destination today: Boumalne Dades. Prepare to be wowed by this town set on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Tonight, we'll savor an included dinner at your Riad-hotel.

Day 6: Boumalne Dades – Erfoud

morocco escorted tours

Today, we’ll marvel at one of Morocco’s most visited natural sights, the lush Todra Palmeraie Gorge with its dramatic 985-foot-high walls. Our walking tour affords plenty of spectacular photo ops! Our travels continue to Erfoud, described as an oasis and “the Door to the Desert.” Enjoy dinner at the hotel and rest up for tomorrow’s once-in-a-lifetime Sahara itinerary.

Day 7: Sahara Desert Experience

morocco escorted tours

The only word for today’s full-day excursion is unforgettable! We’ll start in Rissani, a caravan center with a large vibrant souk at its heart, where we’ll hop into a 4x4 caravan to venture into the desert, winding through small villages before stopping in serene Tissardmine for a picnic lunch. As we ascend the peak of Erg Chebbi, prepare to be blown away by the desert's vastness. We’ll “trade up” to camels for the real deal: a ride through the Merzouga dunes on camelback! Loaded with memories (and photos) you can’t wait to share, we’ll return to the hotel after sunset for dinner together.

Day 8: Erfoud – Fez

morocco escorted tours

After departing Erfoud, we’ll journey through the scenic Middle Atlas mountain range, while admiring its lush forested slopes brimming with cedar and oak trees. You’ll have a chance to see Ifrane, a picturesque ski area, and in the evening, when we reach Fez, catch the magical city lights as we arrive.

morocco escorted tours

Fez is home to the oldest university in the world, and today we’ll join a local expert to learn more about this 1,200-year-old city, which was Morocco’s capital for 400 years and stands as one of the world’s largest, best-preserved medieval fortified cities. Our full-day exploration includes the Fez el Bali Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where life unfolds as it did centuries ago. We’ll wander the famous souks known for authentic Moroccan carpets and ceramics. After the high energy of the souks, a quiet lunch in a riad (a traditional Moroccan house with an interior courtyard) will be most welcome. We will also see the Nejjarine Fountains and Museum and the 14th-century Attarine Medersas (a place of education) before visiting Fes Jdid, the modern district of the city, in the afternoon. Here, we’ll explore the Jewish Quarter and the Royal Palace.

Day 10: Fez at Leisure

morocco escorted tours

Enjoy a day at leisure in Fez! Explore and wander the city further. Or consider an optional tour to visit a winery with lunch.

Day 11: Fez – Rabat

morocco escorted tours

After breakfast, we'll drive to Rabat, Morocco's coastal capital and fifth-largest city. Upon arrival, we'll spend the afternoon visiting the city's fascinating historic sites. We'll see the 19th-century Royal Palace and the city's "Gate of the Winds" (also known as Bab Rouah). We'll visit Hassan Tower, the minaret of an incomplete mosque that was originally intended to be the world's largest. We'll continue to the picturesque Kasbah of the Udayas which was built in the mid-12th century. Here, we'll walk through the French colonial gardens and explore the fortress built to shield royalty from attacks. Our tour concludes at Chellah, a necropolis and the site of the ruins of a Roman town known as Sala Colonia. We'll have some free time to relax before we come together for our farewell dinner this evening.

Day 12: Depart Rabat

Our tour comes to an end after breakfast today. Travelers who purchase our air-inclusive package will transfer to the airport for our return flight and touch down in the U.S. later today.

The hammam is a must-do activity in Morocco. Historically, the hammam was a public bathhouse for the locals to clean off the dirt and grime invariably accumulated after traveling through the desert. Today, the hammam still serves this purpose for the locals but is brought to a higher level for the tourists. In the hammam, you’ll be submerged by a complete relaxation experience within an authentic oriental décor where you’ll be listening to your own body in an atmosphere filled with water, oils, essences, and perfumes. Enjoy a 30-minute scrub with black soap or soothing spices to eliminate toxins from your body. After Hammam, sway to the massage room where you will experience a 30-minute traditional Moroccan massage to eliminate tensions and gain energy and vitality.

How to Spend a Perfect Long Weekend in Casablanca, Morocco

Morocco’s seaside city is about far more than American movie nostalgia.

Every item on this page was chosen by a Veranda editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Which is to say that Casablanca should not only be part of any Moroccan itinerary but given that it’s reachable nonstop from New York in only six and a half hours, it’s a marvelous place for a long weekend unto itself. Here’s how to spend a perfect long weekend in Casablanca.

Friday Morning

royal mansour casablanca suite

Snag a nonstop red-eye so you can arrive by late morning in Casablanca and transfer easily to Royal Mansour Casablanca , the game-changing luxury hotel (and sister to the estimable Royal Mansour Marrakech —both owned by the country’s sovereign, King Mohammed VI) that opened in the city’s Art Deco Sidi Belyout neighborhood in April 2024. An eight-year new build on the site of a famed 1950s hotel, the new Royal Mansour pays opulent homage to its forebear’s midcentury elegance and Deco echoes, from its showstopping lobby, restaurants, and courtyard on the ground floor; to its 149 guest rooms, suites, and apartments; to its showstopping hammam and spa; to its 23 rd -floor pair of restaurants and terrace with commanding views of the entire city, the most spectacular of which is the clustered rooftops of the medina giving way to a glittering corniche along the Atlantic and the imposing dome and minaret of the Hassan II Mosque.

The result is a hotel that is surprisingly intoxicating despite its newness: Marble has never looked so inviting, nor carved so sumptuously. The interiors, helmed by a team of designers, are both photogenic and inviting, full of jewel tones and modernist curves—it feels like you shouldn’t check out of the Royal Mansour until you’ve lingered in every space. More than 600 commissioned pieces of contemporary art—many by Moroccan artists—proclaim the assurance and style of this culturally rich kingdom.

Friday Afternoon

the dressing room in royal mansours hammam

Which is to say, devote Friday—all of it—to indulging in what Royal Mansour has to offer. Take breakfast or lunch (or both) at the breeze-cooled, verdant terrace restaurant, power nap in the cool serenity of your room. Schedule an afternoon session at the in-house hammam—two marble palaces (one for men, one for women) of decorative, heated alcoves where you’ll be scrubbed briskly head to toe with the country’s famed black soap derived from argan nuts, then doused with brass vesselfuls of water, rubbed all over and shampooed with argan oil, massaged and cleansed and then invited into a cold plunge that wipes all cobwebs of jetlag from your mind. In the great Moroccan hammam tradition, you will emerge with skin softer than you’ve ever imagined and a serenely clear head. Consider a second treatment from the spa—its facials are superb—and dress for dinner looking 10 years younger.

Friday Evening

royal mansour casablanca brasserie

For dinner, stay in and orient yourself to either of Casablanca’s central culinary foodways. La Brasserie, helmed by three-Michelin-star chef Eric Frechon, offers the classically vibrant menu of French influence—a nod to the dominant European footprint left by the colonizers, who held Morocco for 44 years until its independence in 1956. At the top of the hotel with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the coast, La Grande Table Marocaine elegantly offers the famed flavors and preparations of the country—stewy and savory tagines at the forefront—that are a perfect primer for how to order in city restaurants to come (La Grande Table also offers a fine range of Moroccan wines worth trying).

Saturday Morning

hassan ii mosque casablanca

Culture time. Book one of Royal Mansour’s several excellent guided experiences and consider beginning with a morning exploring the fascinating Hassan II Mosque . The mosque alone could be the subject a daylong visit: Sited spectacularly on a promontory overlooking the Atlantic, this achievement of contemporary architecture inspired by Islamic and Moorish influences was the grand vision of Morocco’s previous sovereign, Hassan II. When a king wants the world’s greatest new mosque, he gets it: More than 10,000 artisans and craftsmen worked on the project, often in shifts around the clock. Completed in just seven years, the mosque opened in 1993 and is a daily place of worship. The second largest mosque in Africa, it’s the only one open to the public in Morocco, and it’s a master class in the highest levels of Moroccan artisanship. Take time for the adjoining museum’s guide to the craft elements at work, from zellige mosaics to tadelakt plasterwork, from brass- to wood-working. (You can also visit a public hammam on the site, but Royal Mansour’s is so compelling, it’s hard to compete.)

Saturday Afternoon

la sqala

Start the afternoon with lunch at La Sqala , a beloved café set just behind the 17 th century ramparts of Casablanca’s old medina. Take a table in the restaurant’s Andalusian garden that bustles with servers porting heavy tagines steaming with classic Moroccan preparations of beef, fish, lamb, and vegetables and pick one for yourself. Take your time, and let the sun pass overhead, before setting out to explore (on your own or with a guide) the beguiling labyrinth of the old medina.

Far less intimidating than its sister in Marrakech, this is a lovely place to get lost and explore—the walls are never that far away, and many of the streets are residential. On the shopping side of things, the central market of the medina, largely covered, is more about daily goods than crafts, so enjoy the glimpse into real life in Casablanca. A notable exception: Exposition Artisanale Casablanca (there’s no website; ask the concierge for directions) is a fascinating emporium that works with women-run collectives in remote parts of Morocco; the artisan goods and rugs are worth a serious look. That said, as always in Morocco, be ready to sit, share mint tea with your host, review many rugs laid out, and declare your favorites. And don’t worry: They ship.

Saturday Evening

grand table

If you ate French on Friday night at Royal Mansour, switch tonight to Moroccan, or vice versa. Casablanca isn’t a big drinking city, but the hotel’s 1950s-inspired jewel box, The Bar, is perfect for a nightcap.

Sunday Morning and Afternoon

picturesque view of rabat, morocco's capital city

After rooftop croissants and espresso overlooking the city from Royal Mansour’s terrace, plan for another day plunging in with another of the hotel’s expeditions: a food tour of the city (including must-taste sfenj donuts and soft msemen flatbread, not to mention olives and argan oil), a visit to clothing designers and their boutiques, a street-art tour, or a cultural tour that swings through the city’s Habous Quarter and Art Deco district of the city’s Petit Paris. The hotel will even arrange a scenic ride in a vintage Cessna Skyplane aircraft for a brilliant bird’s eye view of the thriving port city.

Feeling even more ambitious? It’s surprisingly easy to hop a train to Rabat, Morocco’s cultured and historic capital city (founded in 1150) little more than an hour up the coast. Explore the city’s public gardens (especially Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier’s circa-1914 Botanical Test Garden ), tour its historic sites including the 12 th -century Hassan Tower , and shop its traditional markets, especially along Souïka Street and the Rue des Consuls for leather goods, spices, and embroidery and carpets from Rbati artisans. Just across the Bou Regreg River in Salé, the Oulja Complex is a sprawling and surprisingly mellow village of workshops and shops—here is where you’ll buy your tagine, lantern, or tiled table and be so pleased you did.

Sunday Evening

dar dada casablancca

Enjoy one more marvelous round of Moroccan flavors at Dar Dada , hidden off the main street and housed in a beautifully restored riad in the medina. Yes, it’s intentionally cinematic—your server wears a fez and there may be live music and traditional dancing in the central courtyard during the evening—but it’s a celebratory and marvelous venue for lingering over Moroccan salads, seafood tagines, and delicate desserts fragrant with orange blossom and honey. And toasting this vibrant port city with so much to offer the lucky guest.
