How Lyft calculates ride prices

Lyft calculates the cost of a ride using these factors:

  • Lyft fare — A variable fee based on the ride route, ride type, demand, and ride availability
  • Service fee — A flat fee based on the region the ride was in
  • Third-party fees — Any local fees & taxes, airport fees, and other surcharges
  • Tolls — The cost of tolls is passed onto riders
  • Ride Demand — Prices increase when demand is high
  • Other market factors — Lyft can use unexplained other factors to increase the price

Upfront pricing: Why prices are unpredictable

The Lyft app instantly quotes an upfront price when you input a destination. Lyft says that the upfront price is based on factors “ which may include estimated time and distance, travel to pickup, ride demand, and other market factors. ”

Lyft guarantees that you will pay the upfront price unless the trip is unexpectedly longer or shorter than Lyft’s estimation.

But after your ride, you might notice that the receipt doesn’t give you much detail about the price you paid. It doesn’t say how much you paid per mile or per minute, or how Lyft calculated the fare.

a lyft receipt that shows line item for lyft fare, service fee, and tip

Receipts don’t offer much insight into pricing. You won’t see per mile or per minute prices

Before upfront pricing, ride prices were calculated with a rate card that specified the exact base fare, cost per mile, and cost per minute.

The benefit of up-front pricing is that you’ll always know exactly how much you’ll pay before you request the trip.

The downside is that it’s not always entirely clear why Lyft charged  the price you paid.

How to see the mileage & time rates for a ride type

Even though upfront pricing means that the cost of a ride isn’t entirely connected to a rate card, you can still see the per-mile and per-minute rates for any ride type.

Enter a destination into the app, then tap on a ride type for more pricing information . Next, tap on the small i  to bring up Price details .

That’s where you can see the base fare, minimum fare, per mile, per minute rate, and Prime Time rate.

Note that the Lyft fare also factors in ‘ride availability’ and ‘demand,’ which can add additional charges that make the exact cost of a ride less predictable.

The price differences between Lyft ride types

Lyft features several ride types , each with different prices and features. In general, expect to pay more if you need a larger or more luxurious car .

Lyft ride types from least expensive to most expensive

  • Lyft – The standard ride
  • Extra Comfort – Newer cars with more legroom, top-rated drivers
  • Lyft XL – Larger vehicles, seating for more passengers
  • Lyft Lux Black – High-end luxury car
  • Lux Black XL – High-end luxury SUV

Different ride type, different price

Priority pickup: Pay more for faster pickup times

The standard Lyft ride has a Priority Pickup option to speed up your pickup time for a few extra dollars.

Wait & Save: Pay less to wait longer

If you’re not in a rush, you can save on the cost of a standard Lyft by choosing the Wait & Save option.

Your driver will take longer to pick you up, but you will save a few dollars off the typical ride cost.

Lyft ride options: Priority pickup for $22, Wait & Save for $16

Pay more for a faster pickup or less for a slower one

What is the minimum cost of a Lyft?

Each Lyft service has a minimum cost that guarantees drivers are fairly compensated for short rides.

In Los Angeles, minimum fares range from ~$3.50 for Lyft, $6 for Lyft XL, and $25 for Lux Black XL .

To check the minimum cost of a Lyft, input a destination and tap on a ride type for more info. Then, tap the small ‘i’ to see more pricing info, including the minimum fare for that ride type.

Lyft prices go up when demand is high

Lyft charges higher prices when passenger demand is high by adding a pricing multiplier to the cost of the ride.

To see if a pricing surge applies to your fare, tap on the ride type you want to select, then tap on the small “i” next to Payment.

Pricing changes with demand, so if there is a large increase in pricing, consider waiting a few minutes or walking to a less busy location.

How to tip your Lyft driver

You can choose to tip your Lyft driver after the ride has ended. Tipping is optional, and drivers keep 100% of your tip .

You can choose to tip your driver during the ride, or after the ride is over. During the ride, tap on the ride information to find the tipping area. After the ride ends, rate your driver and select a tip amount.

Lyft prices vary from city to city

Prices are different in each Lyft market. For example, Lyft costs more in a market like New York City and less in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Head over to the Lyft Cities page to see Lyft prices in your city or the city you’re visiting.

Real-world Lyft prices: How much Lyft costs in Los Angeles

Lyft prices in Los Angeles are close to the average for US cities, so prices in LA are a good general indicator of how much a Lyft costs nationwide.

When Lyft Lux is cheaper than a regular Lyft: Weird pricing!

A higher-end service like Lux can be cheaper than a regular Lyft if a sudden burst of requests for regular Lyft rides drives prices higher than luxury rides.

About Lyft fees

Lyft may charge several fees that can add to the cost of your ride.

Many fees are built into the upfront cost of every ride , but others are avoidable fees based on passenger behavior.

Lyft Service Fee : A flat-rate fee charged on every ride that is used for Lyft operation costs. It is included in upfront price estimates.

Cancellation fee : You will be charged a cancellation fee if you cancel your ride more than two minutes after a driver has accepted your request and the driver is on time to arrive within 5 minutes of the estimated arrival time.

For scheduled rides , you will be charged a $10 fee if you cancel more than 1 hour before your scheduled pickup time.

No-show fee : You will be charged a no-show fee if your driver arrives at your location and you fail to arrive at their car within five minutes.

Third-party fees : You may have to pay for local fees & taxes, fees for an airport ride , or other surcharges that Lyft doesn’t charge.

For example, the riders in California pay the California Driver Benefits Fee and Portland riders pay the City of Portland Surcharge.

Lost item return fee: Lyft charges a $15 fee if you lose an item and your driver returns it to you. The full lost item fee goes to your driver.

Damage fee : If you leave a mess or cause damage, Lyft may add a charge to compensate the driver. If you are charged a damage or cleaning fee, you will receive an email from Lyft detailing why.

Tolls:  Lyft passengers pay for tolls. The Lyft app will detect when your route involves a toll road, and the cost will be automatically added to your up-front price estimate.

This evening we experienced an shady event leaving a concert this evening. Let me start by stating that we had used an UberX to get to the conceronly 2 miles away. Costing only $13.00. It was just after a concert near Buckhead Atlanta. Chastain Park. For some reason, we had no signal to reserve an Uber . So… All Riideshare drivers were lined up at the exit. A driver in a black Suburban drove up next in line. We asked who he was with? He replied “ Lyft” . Then politely asked where we were going? We told him the hotel 2 miles away. Then he asks if we minded sharing the ride? We didn’t mind. They got in and off we went. We arrived at our hotel first. We wanted to pay cash. He informed us his Suburban was a Limousine and we owed him $125.00!!!! For 2 miles AND a shared ride no less! We were floored! Not sure if it was because we were paying cash? We told him we would give him $100 and he took it! Is this normal?????? Wonder if he did the same thing to the other couple in the car? They were paying with a card?

Do you feel that Lyft's prices are too expensive or maybe crazy cheap? Have you ever wondered how Lyft derives their fares? There are a few key components that go into calculating and estimating a Lyft Fare and the RideGuru team is here to outline it for you!

How is My Lyft Fare Calculated?

Your Lyft fare is based on 4 main criteria:

  • Base (or initial) fare – A flat fee charged at the beginning of your ride
  • Cost per minute – How much you are charged for each minute of your ride
  • Cost per mile – How much you are charged for each mile you are inside the ride
  • Trust and Safety Fee – A flat fee to cover Lyft’s ‘operating costs’.

Here’s how Lyft uses the 4 main criteria above to calculate your fare:

Base Fare + (Cost per minute * time in ride) + (Cost per mile * ride distance) + Trust and Safety Fee = Your Fare

Other Key Factors in Determining Your Lyft Fare

There are a few more factors that influence your Lyft Fare that are not included in the 4 main criteria above.

Tolls and Fees: Lyft requires all passengers to pay for any tunnel, bridge, or toll charges that are incurred during the course of the ride. These charges will be added to your total fare at the end of your trip.

Lyft App

Your Lyft fare, with Prime Time pricing, is calculated by multiplying your total fare (before tolls) by the Prime Time price multiplier. For instance if the Prime Time amount is at 2x your total fare will be doubled, if the surge amount is 3x your total fare will be tripled.

Prime Time Pricing Example: If your total fare at the end of your trip is $15 and the Prime Time multiplier was 2x, your new total would be $30. Then Lyft would add on any incurred tolls.

Lyft Minimum Fare: To encourage drivers to pick up quick rides that will not yield much profit, Lyft sets a minimum fare for each service. This helps to justly reimburse drivers for short rides. If the combination of the above criteria results in your fare being lower than the minimum fare, you will be charged the minimum fare price instead. The minimum fare amount changes from city to city.

Minimum Fare Example: Say you are in a hurry and you decide to take a Lyft only two blocks down the street.  After your trip ends and you add up the four different Lyft fare factors (as shown above), you calculate that your fare should only be $2.98. But in your city, the minimum fare is $5, so you will be charged $5 instead of $2.98.

Lyft Maximum Base Fare:  In some cities, there is also a maximum base amount that can be charged. This is designed for unusually long rides. The maximum base fare amount is as follows; $500 in New York City and New Jersey, $240 in Los Angeles, $200 for all other regions.

Lyft Fare Prices Vary Based on City & Car Service

Lyft Cars with Pink Mustaches

The four main criteria factors that we outlined in section 1 (base fare, cost per minute, cost per mile, and booking fee) all vary from city-to-city, and across Lyft services (Lyft, LyftLine, and LyftPlus). To learn more about the differences between each Lyft car service visit this help page here .

Now that you understand all the factors that go into your Lyft Fare and how time-consuming it would be to calculate it on your iPhone calculator, try using RideGuru's Fare Calculator ! RideGuru will not only calculate your Lyft fare, it will also show you all possible ride options so you can make sure to find the cheapest ride for your route!

Lyft Fare Estimates – How Much Does Lyft Cost

People are increasingly using the Lyft services because they’re both affordable and convenient. All you have to do is download the Lyft app and determine the locations of both the start and the destination of your journey. Then, you just need to wait for a short amount of time for the Lyft driver to arrive and confirm your pickup.

You might first want to check out our article on how to use Lyft.

Table of Contents

How Much Does Lyft Cost?

One of the most significant advantages of this method of transport is that you can quickly get a Lyft price estimate, so you will know how much a particular ride is before you start it. You can find a reliable fare estimator both in the mobile app and on the website. Usually, it will turn out that the Lyft estimate is much more cost effective than taking a regular cab.

When you enter a particular destination, you will see the fare before you order a ride. Thanks to upfront pricing, passengers can find out what the cost per ride is before they make a decision if they want to get a Lyft or not. However, you may wonder what happens if your plans suddenly change, and you need to alternate the destination. Lyft has taken into account that a situation may be dynamic, and they allow you to modify the route during the Lyft ride. In such circumstances, a stop is added, and the upfront price you were quoted before is no longer valid. The cost of the ride will be calculated to reflect the new route you enter.

lyft trip estimate

How Lyft Prices Are Calculated – Lyft Fare Breakdown

When you enter a destination, the Lyft app will immediately determine your upfront price based on the estimated time, distance, prime time pricing, and a calculation based on how willing you are to pay for the ride. You will have to cover this cost unless the journey turns out to be much shorter or longer than expected in the fare estimate. Due to upfront pricing, it is hard to check an easy time and mileage calculation for your Lyft ride.

The main advantage of such an approach is that you will always be informed about the fare estimate before you get a Lyft ride. On the other hand, when you already enter your pickup, you may not be sure why you have to cover that particular cost.

What Fees or Other Charges to Passengers Are There?

Lyft fare estimate is calculated with the following criteria:

Base charge – The flat minimum fare you always need to cover for a Lyft ride.

Price per minute – The cost counted for every minute of your journey.

Price per mile – The cost calculated for every mile of the Lyft ride.

Service fee – A stable fee added to each ride. This money does not go to the driver, but to Lyft.

Other fees – If your ride starts at an airport, an additional fee will be included. If there are toll roads on your route, your Lyft fare estimate will be increased with toll charges.

Tip – If the ride was exactly as good as you expected, and the Lyft driver was friendly and helpful, you can award them with a tip at the end of the ride (it is recommended, but entirely optional).

lyft trip estimate

What Are the Prices for Different Lyft Services?

When the Lyft app first appeared, there was only one way to order a ride – you just had to open it up and press the large button saying “Request Lyft.” In the beginning, all the services were the same, so the fare estimate was counted similarly in each case. However, the company has developed its service, and now, in most cities, it provides passengers with many different options to personalize their Lyft ride.

Here you can see the list of the currently available services:

Lyft – a regular on-demand ride, available for four passengers maximum.

Lyft Shared (previously known as Lyft Line) – here, you can get the lowest Lyft fare estimate because you will be paired with other people who need to travel along the same route. It is because the cost is split between all the passengers.

Lyft XL (previously known as Lyft Plus) – an SUV or a minivan that can take up to six passengers. The fare estimate is higher here than in the case of Lyft.

Lyft Lux – a luxury sedan for people who appreciate greater comfort. Seats for four passengers are available.

Lyft Lux Black – the most exclusive and costly Lyft service. Your ride will take place in a luxurious new black SUV or sedan with a Lyft driver that has been rated highly by many previous clients.

Lyft Lux Black XL – similar to the option above but with SUVs that can take up to six passengers.

When you want to travel alone or with less than four people, a regular Lyft ride will be the best option for you. If there are five or more people with you, then Lyft XL sounds perfect. For commuters, Lyft Shared is the most recommended because it allows you to save more money on frequent rides.

lyft trip estimate

Where to Find a Lyft Fare Estimate?

Both on the website and in the Lyft app, you can find a real-time fare estimator that will allow you to calculate the price of a particular ride. As we have mentioned earlier, it includes the cost per minute or per mile, as well as a service fee and possible additional charges.

You should bear in mind that in prime time when many people are looking for a Lyft driver, the fare can be higher. Therefore, if you see a higher price than you had earlier on the same route, it means there are a lot of orders at a particular moment. If you are not in a hurry and you care about the cost a lot, you can try to wait a little and see how the system estimates the fare after some time.

How to Get Fare Estimates in Your City?

Note that your fare estimate may differ from one city to another because every market is priced differently. For instance, you can get a Lyft ride in Tulsa, Oklahoma at a bit lower price than in, let’s say, New York City. In order to check the prices in your city (or the place you are currently in), you can go to the Lyft Cities page on their official website.

An important thing to remember about a Lyft estimate is that on some routes, tolls need to be added to the general cost of a ride. Toll amounts are counted with a local electronic toll collection pricing. It can be, for example, E-ZPass, TollTag, Peasy, Good to Go! or FasTrak. Keep in mind that Lyft does not cover the difference between the electronic toll collection rate of a particular region and other rates (like a cash rate). Hence, if you do not want to overpay, you should turn to the electronic systems.

Connecticut to NYC

Apart from the applicable tolls and surcharges, your Lyft fare estimate will be increased with a $15 surcharge for every Lyft ride that starts in Connecticut and finishes in New York City.

Massachusetts

Remember that a Lyft driver from Massachusetts will be reimbursed for particular tolls at the commercial E-ZPass rate. They will be provided with a special adjustment from E-ZPass to the commercial toll rate. A Lyft driver with a commercial transponder will not even get any difference in the E-ZPass statement. You can find more details about it if you visit the MassDOT website.

Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

When you travel from New Jersey to New York City or the other way round, your Lyft estimate will be raised with a $20 surcharge. What is more, if the route starts in New Jersey and includes the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, you will pay $19 more. Overall, the price will increase by $39, which again includes tolls. However, remember that the $19 is not added to your Lyft estimate if you order a ride starting from Staten Island and going through the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

It is definitely worth understanding the different ways how Lyft calculates the fare estimates. It is a fantastic feature to get real-time updates about the cost of a particular ride, but you need to be aware of the fact that if the time or distance turns out to be different than the Lyft fare estimate, your ride may be more expensive (or cheaper, if you are lucky).

In order to check the predicted cost, you just need to open the Lyft website or app and enter the location where you are going and the place where you want to be picked up. In most cases, Lyft’s estimate is close to what you will pay, and usually, the price is much more affordable than ordering a traditional taxi.

It is great that you have many options to adapt the services to your needs and financial capabilities. People who want to save money may use Lyft Shared, and those who need more convenience and luxury can turn to Lyft Lux or even Lyft Lux Black if they intend to impress someone(like a potential business partner).

The Lyft estimate will always take into account your choice while counting the price. So, just check the cost of the route you need to go and if you are okay with the probable price, order a ride and enter your pickup as soon as it arrives! Don’t forget, you can always order a Lyft in advance if you need to.
