Laura Plantation Tour

Laura Plantation has a rich and unique history, from the home itself to the stories of the women who ran it. As you walk through the house, banana grove, garden, and slave quarters, you’ll glimpse the plantation as it looked over 200 years ago, with period furnishings and photos of its original residents. Initially built and run by a French Creole family, Laura Plantation later passed to a German family who ran it for nearly 100 years. Stories by a West African freedman in the 1870s, “Compair Lapin & Compair Bouki” (known in English as “Tales of Br’er Rabbit”), were recorded in the original 1840s slave cabins.

Oak Alley & Laura Plantation Tour

History of laura plantation.

Laura Plantation, located in Vacherie, Louisiana, is one of the most well-documented plantations in the Southern United States. Established in 1805 by Guillaume Duparc, a French naval veteran, Laura Plantation initially encompassed 12,000 acres of land along the Mississippi River. Duparc utilized enslaved labor to cultivate sugarcane, a lucrative crop in the region. Following Duparc’s death in 1808, his widow, Nanette Prud’homme Duparc, and later their daughter, Élise Duparc, managed the plantation. This matriarchal management continued to define Laura Plantation’s operations for many years, a distinctive feature among Southern plantations.

The plantation house, completed in 1805, is a classic example of Creole architecture, characterized by its raised brick basement, expansive galleries, and brightly colored exterior. It was built using local cypress wood and features a symmetrical facade with dormer windows and a hipped roof. The house’s interior was designed with French and Creole influences, showcasing elegant woodwork, detailed paneling, and high ceilings.

Laura Plantation’s history is notable for its extensive documentation of the lives of both the owners and the enslaved people who lived there. The plantation’s historical records include the memoirs of Laura Locoul Gore, the great-granddaughter of Guillaume Duparc. Her memoirs, written in the early 20th century, provide a vivid account of life on the plantation, detailing both the personal and business aspects of running such an enterprise.

One of the most significant aspects of Laura Plantation’s history is its role in preserving and documenting Creole culture. The plantation operated under French Creole customs, which differed significantly from the Anglo-American practices of other Southern plantations. These differences were reflected in the plantation’s language, cuisine, social customs, and management style.

In 1891, Laura Locoul decided to sell the plantation, marking the end of over 80 years of Duparc family ownership. The new owners, the Waguespack family, continued to cultivate sugarcane but eventually sold the property in the late 20th century. The plantation then transitioned from a working agricultural site to a historical landmark.

Today, Laura Plantation is a well-preserved historical site open to the public. It offers guided tours that explore the rich and complex history of the plantation, focusing on the lives of both the plantation owners and the enslaved people. Visitors can explore the main house, the gardens, and the original slave quarters, which provide a sobering insight into the conditions and lives of the enslaved workers.

The plantation is also significant for its connection to the Br’er Rabbit tales, which were recorded in the 1870s by Alcée Fortier, a Louisiana folklorist. These stories, told by the enslaved people of the plantation, are a crucial part of African American folklore and have had a lasting impact on American culture.

Laura Plantation’s commitment to historical accuracy and cultural preservation has made it an important site for understanding the diverse history of Louisiana and the broader Southern United States. Its extensive records and personal memoirs offer a unique window into the past, making it a valuable resource for historians, researchers, and visitors interested in the complex history of American slavery and Creole culture.

Conservative Guest’s Oblivious JD Vance Boast Stuns CNN’s Chris Wallace

CNN anchor Chris Wallace this weekend pushed back on a conservative guest’s bold assertion that Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance has “not had one misstep” during the 2024 presidential election campaign.

Rich Lowry, the editor-in-chief of the conservative National Review , acknowledged Vance had received a “rocky introduction to national life” following his joining of Donald Trump ’s ticket with the resurfacing of his controversial “ childless cat lady ” comments and the fact he’s “not necessarily the most warm and fuzzy campaigner.”

“But he is proven a tireless, fearless, really effective spokesman for this ticket,” Lowry continued. “He talks to and interacts with the press every single day, does hostile interviews, and, as far as I can tell, has not had one misstep.”

Wallace felt compelled to step in.

“Wait a minute,” Wallace said in footage that has been shared on YouTube, before referencing controversies that have engulfed Vance in just the last few days alone.

After some back and forth between Wallace and Lowry, which saw Lowry defending Vance’s actions and comments as simply being part of Trump’s campaign, Wallace predicted: “It’s going to be a long two months.”

Adele has announced that she will be taking an extended break from music when she concludes her Las Vegas residency in November.

Addressing the audience at her final show in Munich on Saturday evening (31 August), the “Easy On Me” singer told fans that she has 10 remaining shows in Vegas, but after that, they won’t see her for “an incredibly long time”.

The 36-year-old explained that she has been touring and performing non-stop for almost three years, and that she’s ready to get back to “living my life”.

“I have spent the last seven years building a new life for myself and I want to live it now,” the singer said through tears. “I want to live my life that I’ve been building and I will miss you terribly.”

She explained that while Munich was meant to conclude her tour, she has 10 more shows to deliver to fans in Vegas who missed out when she fell ill at the beginning of the run in 2022.

Adele appears to confirm she’s engaged to Rich Paul

“But after that, I will not see you for an incredibly long time,” she said to the crowd in a video captured by a fan, shared on X/Twitter. “And I will hold you dear in my heart for that whole length of my break”

The Grammy-winner emphasised that this period has been the “longest” time she has ever performed for, and she will likely never commit to such a schedule again.

Singer announced an extended break after touring non-stop for almost three years

The singer announced she will remember the shows for “eternity”, before leading fans in a tearful sing-a-long of her 2011 breakout song “Someone Like You”.

Adele’s residency at Caesars Colosseum in Las Vegas will continue until 23 November this year. It is unknown when she will return to making music or performing again.

The past three years have seen Adele touring her Grammy-winning album 30 , which saw the release of hits “I Drink Wine”, “Hold On” and “Love is a Game”. The album, released in 2021, was her first release in six years after her acclaimed third record 25 .

Adele’s love ballads in 30 were written during a period of emotional tumult following the singer’s divorce from her husband Simon Konecki in 2019. The pair had been together since 2011 and married in secret in 2018.

The pair share a son, Angelo, who was born in 2012, and they have continued to co-parent together since their split.

In the past three years while living in the US, the singer has found love again with American sports agent Rich Paul, who she started dating in 2021.

It is thought that the pair are soon to be married since Adele has told fans onstage that she is “engaged” , and on another occasion, she referred to Paul as her “husband”.

In an interview with Elle , Adele celebrated her relationship with Paul, noting that she’d “never been in love like this” before. “I’m obsessed with him. I’m just in loooove! I’m happy as I’ll ever be. I might as well be married,” she told the magazine.

Earlier this year, the singer candidly shared her plans to have a family with Paul , during a monologue at a Las Vegas show.

“Once I am done with all my obligations and stuff like that and all my shows, I’m going to have a baby,” she explained. “And I want a girl because I’ve already got a boy.”

She then told the audience about the possibility of having a baby daughter: “She’s going to put me in my place all the time, isn’t she? With me as her mother and Rich as her father, she’s going to be a bossy little queen, isn’t she?”
