Can You Walk to the Cruise Port in Miami?

Yes, you can walk to the Miami cruise port from nearby areas like Bayside Marketplace, but it’s a bit of a trek. It’s about a mile to the entrance of the port and a bit further to the cruise terminals. While there is a sidewalk, the walk includes crossing streets and dealing with the Miami heat, which can make it uncomfortable, especially with luggage.

What Time Do I Need to Be at the Cruise Port in Miami?

At the Miami cruise port, check your booking for the assigned boarding window, typically from noon to 4 PM. Cruise lines use staggered check-ins, so your exact time will be on your ticket. Arriving within your specified slot reduces waiting times.

How Late Can You Board a Cruise Ship?

To board your cruise on time, aim to be on the ship at least 90 minutes before departure. This ensures compliance with final departure manifests required by government regulations. Most cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, advise completing check-in at least two hours prior if you haven’t checked in online.

Best hotels near Miami Cruise Port with free shuttle

Hotels Miami with free cruise port shuttle

When embarking on a cruise adventure, your journey begins when you step foot in Miami. This vibrant city, known for its energy, stunning beaches, and melting pot of cultures, is a gateway to some of the most sought-after cruise experiences. As cruise travellers, we always look for the best hotels near Miami Cruise Port with shuttle buses.

Transportation is the last thing we want to worry about when we start our cruise vacation, and it is ideal if we can plan everything before leaving home.

Quick navigation

Hotels near Miami Cruise Port – both old and new

I feel right at home in Miami as soon as I exit the airport terminal and am hit with a wall of tropical heat. I’m back.

Miami was home to me for a few years back in the early days of my career, and having family still in Florida, I am familiar with many of the old and new hotels in Miami.

Choosing the right hotel near the Miami Cruise Port is a must when joining a cruise. Transport options in the city are good and have become even better in recent years, so it’s always easy to visit downtown Miami, Miami Beach, Coconut Grove, or further afield to Hollywood or Fort Lauderdale.

Staying near the cruise port means I will never have to stress on embarkation day .

In this guide, I aim to give you accommodation options that offer great stays and shuttle services to the cruise port ready for your cruise from Miami , whether they are paid, or free.

Are there hotels near Miami Cruise Port with shuttle buses to the cruise ship?

Your hotel stay can set the tone for the entire vacation. Picture this: You arrive in Miami, greeted by the warm sun and the ocean breeze. But there’s more to the equation for a perfect pre-cruise experience.

Imagine having your accommodations just a stone’s throw away from the Miami Cruise Port, complemented by a seamless shuttle service that whisks you away to your ship when you’re ready.

And there are a few of Miami’s hotels that do this really well. However, there are no downtown hotels that offer the shuttle ride free of charge . All come with a cost, which is not that much per person, but if you are a small group, you may want to split the cost of a taxi instead.

Let’s dive into a collection of hotels that combine comfort, luxury, and the convenience of shuttle services .

A glance at the top hotels near Miami Cruise Port with shuttle services

Intercontinental miami, an ihg hotel.

If you want to start your vacation on the right note, let me introduce you to InterContinental Miami. This gem, belonging to the IHG family, is like a great prelude to your cruise adventure.

The luxurious rooms offer stunning views of the city skyline and Biscayne Bay. And the best part? It’s a mere 10-minute drive from the cruise port, so you’ll practically be waving at your ship from your balcony!

Their top-notch service and excellent dining options will make you feel pampered and ready to start your Caribbean cruise .

Eurostars Langford

Get ready to discover a great hotel in the heart of Miami – the Eurostars Langford. This boutique hotel combines modern comfort with a touch of historic charm. Who wouldn’t want to stay in a restored 1925 Beaux-arts building?

The Eurostars Langford is all about making your cruise experience seamless. Just a 15-minute ride from the cruise port, you’ll have ample time to indulge in the cosy elegance of your room and explore the vibrant downtown scene. After all, a perfect night’s sleep and some city exploring are the ultimate pre-cruise rituals!

CitizenM Miami World Center

If you’re the type who craves innovative style and modern vibes, look no further than the CitizenM Miami World Center. This place is like a tech-savvy haven for trendsetters. Check out the super cool lobby that’s also an art gallery, not to mention the ultra-comfy rooms.

And here’s the cherry on top: It’s just a quick 12-minute jaunt to the cruise port. So, whether you’re seeking the perfect Instagram backdrop (check out the pool terrace) or a cosy nook to unwind, CitizenM has you covered – a fabulous way to start your cruise journey!

Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay

This hotel’s prime location on the edge of Biscayne Bay provides breathtaking views of the bay and the Miami skyline. Whether relaxing in your room or enjoying a meal at one of the on-site restaurants, you’ll be treated to great views that set the tone for your entire cruise experience.

The hotel is completely renovated, so the rooms are fresh and bright. We like the Catch Grill & Bar, which serves up a great array of seafood. The hotel also features a Starbucks for those needing a quick caffeine fix.

Exploring free shuttle services

Your adventure begins as soon as you step off the plane. If you have traveled a long way to get to Miami and arrive tired or jet-lagged, a hotel close to the airport is a good option.

Free shuttle services allow you to bid farewell to transportation worries and focus on the exciting voyage ahead.

As Miami Cruise Port is only 15 minutes by taxi from Miami Airport, these airport hotels with shuttle transportation are worth looking at for your first night in the city. You can always transfer to another hotel closer to the cruise port after your first night, or if you only have one night at a hotel before your cruise, head straight to the cruise terminal after breakfast.

  • Homewood Suites Miami-Airport, Blue Lagoon
  • TownePlace Suites by Marriott Miami Airport

  • Courtyard by Marriott by Miami Airport

Our favorite of these? It would have to be Homewood Suites Miami Airport, Blue Lagoon. On our last visit, we traveled as a family and had a spacious, fresh suite perfect for our needs. The kitchen area meant we always saved on eating out, and there was an excellent outdoor pool area.

Also, breakfast was included in our rate, so that was a bonus. The choice of breakfast at the buffet was great; it was an excellent start to the day for the whole family. We arranged a shuttle transfer from the airport to the hotel before we arrived free of charge. Just email the hotel after you have booked.

Homewood Suites Miami Airport is part of the Hilton group. If you are a Hilton Honors member, make sure your booking is registered with your membership number to earn points and get a few freebies when you check in, such as bottled water for your room.

Seamlessly reaching the Miami cruise terminal

The morning of embarkation should be filled with anticipation, not logistical concerns. You must enquire directly with the hotel if they offer the cruise port shuttle, as services can change anytime. There will often be a per-person charge for this shuttle. If you prefer to share a taxi, the cruise port is very close and will not take more than 10 to 15 minutes to reach.

Always give your driver the cruise line’s name and the terminal address, which you can find on your cruise ticket. Miami Cruise Port is one of many cruise ports in Florida , and amongst the largest in the world, and you need to ensure you get dropped off at the right terminal.

Exploring nearby attractions

Miami is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to happen. From vibrant neighborhoods to cultural landmarks, the city has it all.

I love Coconut Grove, so when I visit Miami without going on a cruise, I choose a hotel in this neighborhood and visit my favorite art galleries and vintage boutiques. And if I’m lucky, there will be an outdoor art fair with local artists showcasing their paintings.

Some of the most popular places of interest around MIami include:

  • South Beach : Known for its iconic pastel-colored Art Deco architecture, South Beach is a vibrant and lively destination. Enjoy sunbathing on its pristine sandy beaches, stroll along Ocean Drive, and soak in the electric atmosphere of this famous area.
  • Art Deco Historic District: Take a walking tour of this district to admire the well-preserved Art Deco buildings. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Miami’s architectural history.
  • Little Havana : Immerse yourself in Cuban culture in Little Havana. Explore Calle Ocho, where you can savor Cuban cuisine, watch live music, and experience lively street life.
  • Wynwood Walls : Art enthusiasts will appreciate Wynwood Walls, an outdoor museum featuring colorful murals and street art by local and international artists. It’s a unique and ever-evolving art experience.
  • Vizcaya Museum and Gardens : This historic Italian Renaissance-style villa is surrounded by lush gardens and offers a glimpse into Miami’s Gilded Age. The architecture and scenery are breathtaking.
  • Everglades National Park : For a nature escape, head to the Everglades. Take an airboat tour to see alligators and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Either rent a car for the day or arrange transportation with or without a guide .
  • Bayside Marketplace : This waterfront shopping and entertainment complex is great for shopping, dining, and enjoying live music. You can also hop on a boat tour from here to see Miami from the water.
  • Miami Seaquarium : Perfect for families, the Miami Seaquarium showcases marine life, including dolphins, sea lions, and colorful fish.

City transportation to help you get around Miami and the surrounding areas

You will often need transportation beyond port-related transfers, enabling you to explore the city’s offerings easily. That is where the Miami Trolley comes in. And to reach places further afield, such as Fort Lauderdale, the Brightline high-speed train service is easy to use and priced just right.

The Miami Trolley

Miami Trolley is a convenient and free way to travel around Miami.

Visit their website for specific routes and schedules to determine if this environmentally friendly transport option takes you to where you want to go!

5 factors to consider when selecting your pre-cruise hotel

Your choice can significantly impact your overall cruise vacation, so consider factors such as location, transportation options, amenities, and pricing to ensure a seamless and enjoyable start to your journey.

  • Proximity to the Cruise Port: Choose a hotel that is conveniently located near the cruise port to minimize travel time and potential transportation hassles.
  • Transportation Options: Consider the availability of transportation options such as shuttles, taxis, or public transit to and from the cruise terminal and other attractions.
  • Amenities and Services: Look for hotels offering complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi to enhance your pre-cruise stay.
  • Price and Budget: Set a budget for your hotel stay and explore options that align with your financial plan to ensure a cost-effective experience.

Finding the right hotel that fits within your trip budget and is close enough to the port is essential. The cost of parking at the cruise port is roughly $22 a night, so if you’re gone for a week, that’s an extra $150 added on to the already high cost of your trip.

The ONLY 9 Miami Cruise Port Hotels offering shuttle service to and from port. These nearby hotels cater specifically to cruise passengers!

Here are the ONLY 9 Hotels Near Miami Cruise Port with FREE shuttle and parking packages available.

Unless you live in Southern Florida, it's likely you'll be flying or driving a ways before boarding your ship. Either option requires some additional planning and expenses. We're here to help you minimize those expenses. Here you'll find the best Miami hotels offering " park & stay cruise packages ."

Miami Cruise Port Hotels with Map

Shuttle vs Self Parking vs Uber

How to Get to Miami Cruise Port

We're not quite ready to dive into our recommended hotels near Miami Cruise Port. First, let's discuss getting to the Port of Miami. You'll have the options of shuttle, self-parking, or ride-share (like uber).

MIAMI CRUISE PORT SHUTTLES

Before Uber came along, this was one of the biggest factors in choosing a hotel near the Port of Miami. This was once a significant expense, particularly for larger families! An airport or cruise shuttle costs roughly $15 per person, per trip. Let's assume that you'll be flying into Miami and shuttling to port. For a family of four, this would total $240 in round trip expenses to and from the airport and cruise terminal. That's equivalent to 24 Lido Deck Daiquiris! Nope. No thanks.

You'll find that many hotels no longer offer shuttles to Miami Cruise Port. They simply can't compete with Uber, Lyft, etc. An Uber will cost roughly $15 from Miami Airport to your hotel. You'll pay the same from your hotel to the Port of Miami. And that price is per car rather than per person! Instead of paying $160 for shuttles, you'll pay less than half of that with Uber.

That said, some hotels still offer this cruise port shuttle perk. We note those below.

Port Shuttle = Old School Cool

Some of us are old-school and prefer a shuttle. We mention a few advantages to a shuttle below. This is a shuttle free judgement zone. We're just here to provide you with all the info and options. You do you!

MIAMI CRUISE PORT PARKING

Unfortunately, there's no cheap AND convenient solution to the parking situation in Miami. If you're driving, you'll need somewhere to park your car for the week-or-so while cruising.

Parking costs near Miami Cruise Port are steep. While many hotels offer the option, it'll cost roughly $40 per day. An 8-day vacation will set you back $320 (or 32 daiquiris)!

You can also choose to park at the Port of Miami rather than your hotel. There you'll pay around $20 per day. This is a decent option, but includes a few drawbacks listed below.

Factors to Consider

  • Convenience : Parking at the port will require you to retrieve and repark your car multiple times. Miami is one of the world's busiest cruise ports and that'll be obvious in the self parking lot at port. Finding a spot on a busy debarkation day can get awfully stressful.
  • Door to Door Service : If parking at port, you'll need to handle your own baggage. Depending on the space you get, this could be more or less difficult. Taking a shuttle or Uber to port means much less walking and baggage handling.
  • Traffic & Directions : Miami has terrible traffic. The city isn't the easiest to navigate as well. The combination can lead to some headaches on the day of or after your cruise. Your shuttle or Uber driver will be much more familiar with the best ways in and out of Miami Cruise Port.

We hope that you find a great option above. We recommend booking well in advance of your vacation as hotels tend to book up quickly particularly on heavy cruising days.

Based on the feedback provided by our community, here are the most commonly asked questions we've had.

You have two options for parking near Miami Cruise Port. The first is hotel parking. Many hotels offer a daily rate to keep your car safe while cruising. The hotels listed above offer free cruise parking with your "park & cruise" package. The second option is to park at the Port of Miami. There are multiple self-parking lots available.

Without a "park and cruise" package, you'll pay between $30 to $60 per day to park at a hotel near your Miami cruise departure port. Your other option is to park at the Port of Miami. There, it will cost $20 per day in the self-park lot.

There are several factors to consider when deciding whether to park your car at a hotel or at port. The most obvious include parking costs, shuttle expense, and convenience. We go into more detail on each above.

A shuttle will cost between $5 to $10 per person to and from cruise port. An Uber (or similar service) will cost about $15 per car each way.

Before Uber, there were many hotels with free shuttles to the Port of Miami. While there are still a couple left (noted above), most no longer offer this amenity. The cost and convenience of Uber has significantly reduced this service.

You'll want to factor in the cost and convenience of each option. With a cruise shuttle, you'll typically wait for pickup and may stop at multiple hotels on your way. It will generally cost more than Uber and you'll be riding with others vs. a private ride with Lyft or Uber.

A day in Nassau, Bahamas: What to do while your cruise is in port

High Angle View Of Cruise Ships Moored In Sea Against Blue Sky

Cruising and the Bahamas have gone hand in hand since modern cruising began in the 1970s. The first itineraries focused on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from Miami. Today, seven-night and longer Caribbean itineraries often include a port call in Nassau.

The Bahamas is one of the industry's leading cruise port destinations, with the capital city of Nassau being one of the world's busiest ports of call.

Made up of 700 islands spread across 100,000 square miles of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Bahamas boasts some of the Caribbean's most beautiful, clear blue water, white and pink sand beaches, warm temperatures and attractions galore. Nassau is more than a cruise port on the 112-mile-long island of New Providence. It is also a vibrant metropolis filled with lots of diversions.

In the north, Paradise Island has large hotels and all-inclusive resorts that offer day packages for cruise visitors, providing access to premium golf (at the Baha Mar resort), casino gaming (at Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas) and restaurants, shops and nightlife.

Not surprisingly, Nassau is a staple port of call for several cruise lines, including Azamara , Carnival Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , Holland America , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , Oceania Cruises , Princess Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages .

According to the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, in 2024, the Bahamas is expected to host 5.6 million cruise passengers. This figure exceeds the 5.4 million the port hosted in prepandemic 2019. Nassau's cruise port capacity increased from 20,000 passengers per day to more than 30,000 in May 2023, thanks to a $300 million renovation. The project expanded and revitalized the Prince George Wharf port and added a new berth, allowing it to accommodate six ships per day.

The Nassau cruise port now features a streamlined modern arrivals plaza that provides a smooth entry and exit. A new Nassau cruise excursion shop lets guests book everything from taxis to Atlantis tours in one spot. New attractions like the Museum of Junkanoo, more shops, restaurants and bars and an expansion of the iconic Straw Market provide a bevy of things to do at the Nassau cruise port. While the expanded port means more passengers in Nassau, the arrivals plaza and surrounding area are well-laid-out, spreading out crowds and creating a less frenetic atmosphere.

What we could do without

Nassau is on an island within a vast archipelago. Many products are necessarily imported, which means prices, including meals at restaurants, can be high. Nassau can also feel a bit "touristy" at times, as the Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf can host as many as six large cruise ships at once. On busy days, cruise travelers are ubiquitous around the downtown area. As with any busy destination, travelers should stay alert and be aware of their surroundings.

Nassau Cruise Port fast facts

Nassau is extremely popular as a warm-weather getaway destination that's closer to the U.S. Atlantic Coast than most Caribbean basin countries. As a plus, while technically not located in the Caribbean, Nassau and the Bahamas offer the same splendid sunny skies, brilliant azure waters and amazing culture and traditions.

On the small island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. The port is normally a bustling affair as disembarking guests walk from the pier to Bay Street, parallel to the water. The downtown shopping area is where you'll find tour guides and Jet Ski, beach and watersports excursion operators, taxis for hire, scooter rentals, craft and souvenir shops and hair braiders.

Nassau's nearby Paradise Island district offers beaches, restaurants and shops, as well as the Atlantis megaresort, which is among several properties offering day packages for cruisers seeking a daylong all-inclusive experience. The good news is that, with a little preparation, it will be easy to find the right Nassau activity to fit your personal vacation style.

Arrival details

Cruise ships visiting Nassau dock at the Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf, which is a short walking distance from Bay Street and the downtown district. Passengers who are booked on cruise line excursions will find providers staged in areas leading from the dock. Private operators, including those who booked tours with guests separate from the cruise line, will be found beyond the first group.

You can book taxis and tours upon disembarking at a clearly marked kiosk. If your ship is docked at one of the farther berths, it can be a long walk from your ship to the port exit. The port provides shuttles to the terminal building for passengers with mobility issues.

Time zone: The Bahamas operates on Eastern Standard Time.

Language: English is the official language.

Currency: The Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar. Both are widely accepted and generally, it's not necessary to exchange money. If you want to exchange money, you can do so aboard your ship, although you can usually obtain a better rate at a local bank or ATM. Several banks are on Parliament Street, a short walk from the Nassau cruise terminal. Numerous ATMs are also around downtown.

ResortPass offers day passes to the Baha Bay Waterpark (at the swanky Baha Mar complex where the Grand Hyatt is located) for $146 (per adult) and $60 (per child) and includes raft rides, drop slides, free-fall slides, a wave pool, an action river, a surf simulator and the Caribbean's only water-coaster. You can also chill at one of the infinity pools at the park, with access to a bar and restaurant. The pass does not provide access to any other parts of the resort, however.

It also sells a day pass to the British Colonial Nassau (formerly a Hilton), which recently reopened after a total renovation, for $90 per adult and $45 per child. The pass includes access to the outdoor heated pool, the kids pool, beach lounge chairs, towel service and a 10% discount on food and drinks.

Nassau's nearby private islands offer a premium beach experience within a 15- to 20-minute ferry ride. Most cruise lines offer shore excursions to Blue Lagoon Island, but travelers can also book a visit through a travel advisor or on their own online. The excursion is popular and often sells out, so reserve early in your voyage or prior to your cruise date.

At Blue Lagoon, cruisers can swim in a calm lagoon, enjoy kayaking, water-biking or snorkeling tours, play with water toys like floats and inner tubes or simply relax in a beach hammock under coconut palms. Blue Lagoon offers a gift shop, changing rooms, restrooms and shower facilities.

Balmoral Island, Pearl Island and Sandy Toes also offer private island experiences near Nassau.

Cruise travelers whose ships arrive early in Nassau may want to take the approximately one-hour drive to Stuart's Cove, where they can experience snorkeling, diving and swimming with sharks.

Historic sites

hotels close to cruise port in miami

Nassau's history is closely tied to the Caribbean pirate era of the 17th and 18th centuries. The town served as a pirate sanctuary until 1718 when British Governor Woodes Rogers expelled the buccaneers. Today, the downtown district offers 20 square blocks featuring architecture and monuments dating to this compelling era, most within walking distance of the cruise pier.

As a result, visitors can take a DIY approach to exploring Nassau or book a cruise ship excursion highlighting historic forts, Bahamian cuisine, "land and sea" programs, private island experiences and even Junkanoo-style music and dancing.

Historic sites near Prince George Wharf include Parliament Square, which hosts the House of Assembly, the Senate Building and the Supreme Court of the Bahamas in pink neo-Georgian buildings. A statue of Queen Victoria erected in the early 1900s also stands at the site.

Bahamian culture was also shaped by Africans who arrived in the territory as slaves from Sierra Leone and other West African nations. Others traveled to the Bahamas directly from Africa, Bermuda and Haiti — either enslaved by ex-British loyalists from Georgia and South Carolina or former soldiers who won their freedom fighting for the British during the American Revolutionary War.

Several historic sites around Nassau recognize this influence, including Adelaide, Fox Hill and Gambier. Liberated Africans settled these three historic villages in the 1800s and still maintain their African heritage. Cultural and sightseeing tours to these villages are available. Nassau's Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation features a permanent exhibit on the African experience in the Bahamas.

Don't miss the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Housed in the lovely 1860s-era Villa Doyle, the museum showcases historic and contemporary Bahamian art throughout its four gallery spaces.

Best beaches near the Nassau Cruise Port

There's no shortage of great beaches in and around Nassau. In addition to the nearby private island beach experiences, several local beaches are within walking or short driving distance.

Junkanoo Beach

hotels close to cruise port in miami

Junkanoo Beach is about a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, offering travelers an inexpensive and convenient way to enjoy some sun and fun. You can normally see your cruise ship from the nearby beach, and vendors dotting the beach sell buckets of ice-cold Kalik and Sands beer (the local favorites). Don't forget to bring your towel; chairs are available for rent from vendors. Some will package a bucket of beer with chairs and an umbrella.

Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride from Nassau, just over the bridge that spans the islands. Though beautiful, the waters are sometimes rough, and the beach does not offer many amenities. However, locals parade up and down the beach, offering chairs for rent and beverages for sale.

Cable Beach

hotels close to cruise port in miami

Cable Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Prince George's Wharf. Get there via local taxi or a cheaper alternative, the No.10 bus, which charges around $1.25 per person. The 2.5-mile-long beach is often described as Nassau's best, but it's one of hundreds across the Bahamas distinguished by bleach-white sands and remarkably clear blue waters. Cable Beach is home to several top Nassau resorts like Sandals Royal Bahamian and Margaritaville Beach Resort, which offer a full array of watersports activities. Cruise passengers can purchase day passes to enjoy resort amenities. Day passes for Sandals are $340 per person; Margaritaville at Sea day passes cost $110 (for adults) and $55 (for guests age 12 and under).

Other top Nassau beaches

Montague Beach is situated east of the Paradise Island Bridge and is home to a historic fort constructed in the 18th century. The beach promenade is a popular hangout on weekends and public holidays, with vendors offering delicious local food and drinks. The beach is also a preferred spot for wading and picnicking.

Delaporte Beach is west of Cable Beach, near the former plantation village of Delaporte. East of Nassau lies Saunders Beach, which is also popular with visitors and locals.

The beach at Goodman's Bay features recreational facilities for children and is popular among joggers and exercise enthusiasts. A small bridge connects Sandyport Beach to the Venice-like Sandyport resort development near Cable Beach.

How to get around on your own

On foot: Many of Nassau's historic sites and the Bay Street retail district are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier and the downtown area, and one of the most popular things to do is stroll around here. Bay Street is lined with shops, restaurants and bars, and cruisers who are so inclined can spend the day strolling the area. Just put on your sneakers, disembark your ship, take a few steps and start exploring.

By taxi: You can book a taxi at the arrivals area from a marked kiosk. Taxis are not metered, so always negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle.

By bus: Nassau's public buses are known as jitneys and offer a thrifty and convenient alternative to car rentals or taxis. The jitneys cost around $1.25 per person and stop at popular spots, including Cable Beach (see below).

Other transportation: There are also ferries to nearby attractions, and it's also possible to rent a car or motor scooter.

Nassau restaurants near the cruise port

Conch fritters Bahamas

True to its Caribbean traditions, the Bahamas' indigenous cuisine combines flavorful spices with fresh tropical fruit and seafood. Whether found at a lively outdoor market or gourmet restaurant, Bahamian gastronomy is filled with island flavor.

Visitors will find a variety of spots serving local favorites like conch fritters, bite-sized flakes of conch meat fried in batter seasoned with goat pepper, hot sauce and sea salt, plus common Bahamian vegetables. This Bahamian treat is the territory's undisputed favorite dish. Other traditional dishes worth trying include peas and rice (deep brown pigeon peas and white long-grain rice seasoned with tomatoes, onions, thyme, tomato paste, goat pepper and salted pork) and Johnny cakes, a dense and slightly sweet cake-like bread often served at breakfast.

A handful of Nassau food experiences — from casual to upscale — await visitors. For example, the Potter's Cay conch shacks are beneath the high-arching bridge that connects Nassau to Paradise Island. Adjacent to lively fruit markets, the brightly colored conch shacks feature nearly 40 chefs in different shacks cooking fresh conch dishes in myriad ways.

It's a great place to sample an authentic Bahamian lunch featuring the freshest conch fritters and local dishes. You can also interact with the chefs and other locals as they chat about the day's catch or argue over a game of dominoes.

Check first with a local or with a frequent Bahamas visitor (like a travel advisor) to determine which stall is the best for the day. With 25 years in the same location, McKenzie, a former conch fisherman turned restaurateur, is a local celebrity among Potter Cay purveyors, with a shack positioned as the first on the bridge's west end.

For a different Bahamas experience, head to Graycliff Hotel and Restaurant, about a 15-minute walk or a brief taxi ride from the cruise port. The restaurant is in Graycliff Hotel, a historic 18th-century mansion that was once the headquarters of a pirate, Captain John Howard Graysmith. Spend an afternoon exploring the property, which features an impressive heritage museum, chocolate-making and cigar-rolling facilities, art galleries and craft shops.

The highlight, however, may be the hotel's five-star Graycliff Restaurant, an elegant venue with a menu combining continental and Bahamian traditions. The sumptuous restaurant features four air-conditioned dining rooms and a garden dining area, with each room decorated to reflect Graycliff's origins as a private home. In keeping with its atmosphere, the "elegant casual" dress code is strictly enforced.

Nassau Cruise Port shopping

When shopping in the Bahamas, look for souvenirs like original paintings, wood carvings and craftwork and handmade garments in bright tropical colors. Nassau's Bay Street retail district is steps from the cruise ship dock, but there are a few hidden shopping spots just a short taxi ride away.

Virtually adjacent to the cruise port is Festival Place, an outdoor bazaar featuring 45 vendors selling crafts, food and drinks. It's ideal for folks seeking last-minute souvenirs and gifts just before they depart aboard their ship and for arriving passengers in search of shopping close to the port.

Once an open-air affair, Nassau's long-running Straw Market has been expanded into the new cruise port terminal. Its brightly hued stalls feature Bahamian gifts, crafts, souvenirs and unique Bahamian-designed clothing and art. Bay Street features a proliferation of high-end, designer stores selling luxury goods, including apparel, jewelry, cosmetics and fragrances.

You can also take a taxi to reach Nassau's best-kept secrets when it comes to handcrafted, original art and crafts, plus apparel and home goods. Near the corner of Ernest Street and Okra Hill, Bahama Hand Prints offers "bold and brilliant" designs across a wide range of garments, accessories and home furnishings. The shop was established in 1966 by artists Helen Astarita and Berta Sands. All products are developed in-house and crafted by the shop's talented sewing team. Visitors are encouraged to drop in at the factory, speak with the staff and watch the printers at work.

At Craft Cottage Bahamas, you can find locally made home decor, glassware, jewelry, soaps, clothing and artwork. On the grounds of the Doongalik Studios & Art Gallery in Eastern Nassau, the charming shop and gallery feature a diverse and eclectic array of Bahamian-inspired items and emphasize traditional crafting techniques.

The facility is housed in a traditional Bahamian-style home that shares the grounds with a variety of local Bahamian artists who also use the property to work on their own art and products. The shop offers an extensive and impressive array of handcrafted jewelry, painted glass, straw bags and accessories, including homemade soaps and bath products.

Free things to do in Nassau Cruise Port

If you don't want to spend any cash when you get to the Nassau cruise port, a handful of things to do in the Bahamian capital won't cost you a dime.

Since you are in the Bahamas, take advantage of the beach, a free activity. Junkanoo Beach is just a 15-minute walk from the cruise port. Bring a towel and a book and spend the day sunbathing and swimming in the clear, turquoise water for free.

The Queen's Staircase, or "66 Steps," is framed by lush gardens and links downtown Nassau with Fort Fincastle. Ascend to the top of the staircase to reach Fort Fincastle, constructed in the late 1700s atop Bennett's Hill. From there, enjoy sweeping views of downtown Nassau, the harbor and the cruise ship dock.

Nassau's historic district and Bay Street, which is filled with more shops, are also within walking distance of the port, and looking is always free.

Bottom line

Nassau sometimes gets a bad rap as a "touristy" port of call, and cruise travelers often inundate it. However, the Bahamas' capital city is a diverse port with an impressive array of historic attractions, varied beach experiences, distinctive cuisine and extensive shopping opportunities. Nassau's Caribbean flavor, warm temperatures and beautiful natural environment have made the port a staple on cruise itineraries.

Wildfires around Athens under control, Greek officials say. This follows the evacuation of thousands of people earlier this week.

Updated on: August 14, 2024 / 12:25 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Firefighters and milder winds have helped tame a spate of active wildfires surrounding Athens, but the risk for flare ups remains, officials told CBS partner network BBC on Wednesday.

Vasilis Vathrakogiannis, Greece's chief fire brigade spokesman, said officials remain on high alert and that firefighters are keeping close watch on the ground.

As of Monday, there were 41 agroforestry fires raging, according to the Fire Brigade of Greece.

One woman was reported dead and dozens more injured from the blaze that ripped through 100,000 acres of land since it started on Sunday, the BCC reported . Eight others were hospitalized with respiratory problems.

More than 700 firefighters, 199 fire engines and 35 waterbombing aircraft were called in to battle the blaze, which forced thousands to flee their homes, according to the BBC .

Residents of the historic town of Marathon were among those who evacuated, as a huge wildfire front crept closer to the Greek capital despite "superhuman" efforts to contain the blaze, officials said. The historic city's 7,000 residents were told to head for the coastal town of Nea Makri.

Authorities ordered at least five more communities and two hospitals northeast of Athens to leave after eight nearby villages, including Marathon, were told to evacuate on Sunday.

Major wildfire continues to rage in Greece's Attica region

Marathon Mayor Stergios Tsirkas said the town, which gave its name to the long-distance race that is the centerpiece of the Olympics, was facing a "biblical catastrophe."

"Our whole town is engulfed in flames and going through difficult times," Tsirkas told local media.

Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis cut his summer vacation short to return to Athens to oversee the fire response, The Guardian newspaper reported. At least half the country was under a "red alert," the highest level of fire risk in Greece's warning system.

A 20-mile-long wall of flames, more than 80 feet high in places, was moving toward Athens, the ERT public broadcaster reported.

The smell of smoke drifted through Athens' center as thick grey clouds engulfed Mount Pentelicus, also known as Mount Pentelikon, which looms above the capital and is known for producing the marble used in the Acropolis and other ancient buildings.

The smoke had dissipated by Tuesday, the BBC reported , but the hazy skies continued to linger over the Greek capital.

The destruction revived memories of the Mati disaster, the coastal area near Marathon where 104 people died in July 2018 in a tragedy later blamed on evacuation delays and errors.

The summer wildfire season in Greece this year has seen dozens of daily blazes after the Mediterranean country recorded its warmest winter and the hottest June and July since reliable data collection began in 1960.

Temperatures in Athens were forecast  to reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday.

Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias had warned Saturday that half the country was under a high-risk warning for fires due to high temperatures, wind gusts and drought conditions.

On Monday, he said the fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon near the town of Varnavas spread even though a water-bombing aircraft reached the area in just five minutes.

"We're working 24-hour shifts, all of us," said fireman Marinos Peristeropoulos.

"The fire spread very quickly because of the strong wind," he told AFP near one of the hotspots in Grammatiko.

Scientists warn that human-induced fossil fuel emissions are worsening the length, frequency and intensity of heatwaves across the world.

The rising temperatures are leading to longer wildfire seasons and increasing the area burnt in the flames, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Other parts of Europe are also struggling with high temperatures this week. In Rome, temperatures were expected to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday.

In the southern Netherlands, temperatures of up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit are expected, made worse by high humidity.

Haley Ott contributed to this report.

The Guild Downtown | X Miami (Downtown/cruise port area) Dubbing itself “an oasis of calm in downtown Miami” this high-rise hotel sets the bar for cool. First, the location. Here you are right by Bayfront Park and just over the causeway to the Port of Miami. It will only take you minutes to get to your ship.

The hotel itself is modern and trendy, complete with unique designs like a wall full of flamingos in the room. There’s a rooftop pool with tons of loungers and you are also in the heart plenty to see and do before your cruise.

  • Distance to Port: 5.5 miles

Comfort Suites Miami Airport North (Airport area) One of the ironic things in hotels is that the more affordable places to stay often offer better amenities. This Comfort Suites near the Miami airport gives free rides back and forth from the airport, has free wi-fi, and breakfast. For your cruise, there’s even a complimentary shuttle to the Port of Miami each day. Simply register at the desk when you arrive for check in. Meanwhile, the hotel gets strong reviews and can be had for under $150 a night on many dates.

  • Distance to Port: 8 miles

Eurostars Langford (Downtown/cruise port area) Forget best Miami hotels for cruise passengers, this might be one of the coolest in the city. It’s in the converted Miami National Bank building, taking the bones of something old and updating it with modern touches. That means it has a ton of style and a great location as well.

From here you could walk to the port if you wanted (it’s still a bit of a trek), but instead you’re right next to the Coral Way trolley that will take you there for free. It’s also surprisingly affordable many nights given the location.

Holiday Inn Port of Miami (Downtown/cruise port area) This hotel makes our list for its location alone. It’s literally the closest hotel to the cruise port. From your room you could see the cruise ships, as well as be right at Bayside Marketplace — a park and mall that’s right across the street. If you want to be by the ships, it simply doesn’t get any closer. You could literally walk over the causeway to your cruise ship if needed. Prices are also relatively affordable given the location.

  • Distance to Port: 1 mile

Hampton Inn & Suites Miami/Brickell-Downtown (Brickell/cruise port area) Sitting in the heart of Brickell, which is only a few minutes from the cruise ships, this Hampton Inn is one of the best reviewed hotels in the area, earnings 4.5 out of 5 on Google.

Of course, being in the heart of Miami, having a great pool area, and offering a clean and modern hotel is a great recipe for success. And if you’re thinking a bland chain hotel, this one has some unique touches that are very Miami (check out the pink pool table). You can ride the free trolley to the terminals on cruise day.

  • Distance to Port: 2.5 miles

YVE Hotel (Downtown/cruise port area) Just a block south of the Holiday Inn, YVE is also across from Bayfront Park and the shopping center. It’s also a short couple of minutes to get to the cruise ships. If your room is facing that way, you can even see the ships across the causeway. The hotel itself gets great reviews thanks to its location as well as the hip and modern atmosphere — making it perfect for downtown Miami.

Fairwind Hotel (South Beach) Does it get anymore Miami than staying in South Beach in an art-deco hotel that features a rooftop pool? This hotel has exactly that, while sitting right on Collins Avenue and just a block from the famous Lummus Park and the beach.

Despite all that, rates are decent. We were able to find prices under $200 a night most days of the week, although prices are higher for Friday/Saturday stays. The boutique spot is highly rated and right in the heart of it all for a memorable stay before your cruise.

How Much Are Miami Cruise Hotels?

Of course the price of a hotel depends on a lot of factors, including the location, type, and brand of the hotel. In general, however, we’d suggest budgeting about $200 per night for a hotel room before your cruise . Some hotels will be more (some MUCH more!) while you can also find lower priced options. But for a solid hotel in a decent spot, around $200 per night is a good rule of thumb. Prices can be less if staying on a weekday night. However, most cruises depart on the weekend.

What About Resort Fees?

Resort fees are the extra charges you pay at some hotels. These fees often run $30-40 and include things like w-fi service, welcome drinks, newspapers, and more. Unfortunately, they have popped up in tourist destinations like Miami to extract more money from visitors and can be widespread.

In our experience, hotels that are near hotspots like South Beach often charge these extra fees while hotels in other spots (e.g. near the airport) do not. Any resort fee should be fully disclosed before you purchase; not sprung on you at the last minute. Just be prepared that your hotel could have one if looking in a touristy area.

What About Staying Outside of Miami Before a Cruise?

The entire South Florida area offers lots to do and see, from Boca Raton to Coral Gables. Plus, with Uber/Lyft, taxis, trains, and more, it’s relatively easy to get around the city, though traffic can be bad.

In other words, it’s no big deal if you want to stay somewhere outside of the port area before your cruise. Just keep in mind that it will take you a bit longer (and be more expensive) to get to the port on cruise day.
