Captains Log: 55254.6 It's been almost 4 months since the Romulans entered the war against the House of Toral… this marks two superpowers in the Beta Quadrant engulfed, not only in a war with each other but each their own Civil War.   The Federation has officially declared war on the House of Toral but remains uncommitted to the Romulan conflict. Fortunately, the Romulans are more open about their commitments. Admiral Mendek's forces are making progress against those of Pro-Counsul Sela. He has dispatched over a dozen ships to aid Chancellor Martok in finally routing Toral from Quo'nos. He has also appointed Commander Dareeth, a cunning if not reluctant warrior, to take command of all Romulan forces in the Klingon theater.   There is still much resistance coming from the House of Toral, but I with the combined effort of the Romulans, Martok, and Starfleet… the end is in sight.   In the meantime, I've got a new officer coming aboard… Lt CMD Gerald Moss. He'll be taking over the Flight Operations position. He's got an outstanding record and was highly recommended by Admiral Aralni. You’ve Never Seen Worf Like This! Star Trek’s Michael Dorn Rocks On Stage

Star Trek: Picard season 2 hinges on the Europa Mission, but unfortunately, it doesn't make any sense. The important facet of this point in history is that an ancestor of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) named Renée (Penelope Mitchell) must go on a mission to Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, or else the human race will become tyrannical and xenophobic. Thematically, Renée being the key to a better future, not the Europa Mission itself, is meant to show how the Picards have been influential throughout history. At the same time, Jean-Luc's fraught relationship with his own history is addressed, making the two narratives parallel each other.

However, aligning Renée’s story with Jean-Luc Picard's efforts to face his past only works if her subplot is as narratively consistent and important as his journey is emotionally crucial and cathartic. This is particularly true with season 2 of Star Trek: Picard focusing on an alternate universe story, where a single event is meant to change the course of the future. When a narrative puts such importance on a single occurrence, that event needs to be as integral as, and related to, the thematic, personal journey of the characters. Otherwise, it cheapens the story as a whole and feels like an afterthought instead of the main plot.

Why Picard Season 2's Europa Mission Doesn't Make Sense

Unfortunately, the ramifications of Star Trek: Picard ’s Europa Mission are largely glossed over, making its stakes as the herald of a totalitarian order feel so unlikely as to disrupt the immersion of season 2. Supposedly, the success of the Europa Mission would lead to Renée Picard discovering a microorganism that cleans Earth’s ecosystems, preventing climate change and the rise of the Confederation of Earth. But how that microorganism specifically works or what social, ecological, and political events of Star Trek: Picard season 2 would be forestalled by its presence aren’t explored.

Nor is the possibility that any other member of the Europa Mission might discover this new life form, even though the important part of the story beat is that Renée makes the discovery. This lack of specificity weakens the stakes of season 2 because of how unlikely it seems the "correct" person must make a discovery to ensure the best outcome, as opposed to ensuring that the discovery must be made at all.

Picard Season 3 Won’t Deal With The Europa Mission Story Problems

Unfortunately, it isn’t likely that season 3 of Star Trek: Picard will revisit how the microorganism works or what its specific impacts were for the people of Earth. With the conclusion of season 2 and Picard’s return to the far future, there’s no incentive to revisit the Europa Mission or Renée’s future-changing discovery unless the microorganism becomes critically plot-relevant to the new season’s conflict. But given that the organism itself is the solution to such an Earth-centric problem, its utility on the final frontier is doubtful, meaning the Europa mission’s story problems will remain unaddressed.

In season 2 of Star Trek: Picard , Jean-Luc Picard’s journey is prioritized over the plot beyond establishing the need to stop the Confederation from ever forming. This isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, but his efforts to face his past while also protecting it would have been stronger if the Europa Mission had had personal, developed importance to him and the future he was defending. After all, characterization works best when a story’s setting and circumstances do as well, making Star Trek: Picard 's Europa Mission a narrative anomaly that hopefully won’t be repeated in season 3.

This past month, we've been celebrating Intergalactic Friendship with our pals over at Doctor Who . For over the last six decades, both Doctor Who and Star Trek have been delighting generations after generations with adventures, epic and intimate, with over a dozen doctors, captains, companions, and crew.

It's no secret that Star Trek wouldn't be alive and well today without the support of our fans . What makes both Star Trek and Doctor Who special to this editor has been its fandoms and making new friends through our love and excitement over these series and more.

As writer Honora Quinn shared earlier this week , both Star Trek and Doctor Who helped her maintain and establish new friendships. A lot of my friendships revolved around bonding over the newest or our favorite episodes of everything and anything.

Star Trek: Lower Decks , season after season, continues to celebrate every iteration of Star Trek . Like the series' namesake, a landmark episode of The Next Generation , "wej Duj" is the perfect episode to introduce friends because it centers on low-ranking officers early in their careers in Starfleet, Klingon High Council, and Vulcan High Command. This "off duty" episode provides plenty of hijinks without feeling daunting.

"wej Duj, which means "three ships" in Klingon, shows that whether you're serving on a Federation vessel, a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, or Vulcan cruiser, the perils of unglorified, menial tasks knows no border. We all can't live the glory like captains and senior-ranking command officers on the bridge. But maybe having a "bridge buddy" can help us prepare for when that time comes. Plus, new viewers will get to see some Klingon and Vulcan cultural touch points, which is exactly what we all want to see as sci-fi fans!

" Balance of Terror ," Star Trek: The Original Series

One of the best parts of storied franchises is when they get to play with genre. Even in the original series' first season, they took on a tense Cold War thriller with "Balance of Terror."

Despite fighting a war a century earlier, humanity had never seen a Romulan before until Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew face off against a cloaked Romulan ship.

Before Mark Lenard's incredible run as Spock's father, Sarek, he played the Romulan Commander as he's pitted against William Shatner's Kirk, matching wits and skills, in this gripping hour of television reminiscent of Run Silent, Run Deep and The Hunt for Red October .

"Yesteryear," Star Trek: The Animated Series

"Yesteryear"

A perfect Animated Series episode to introduce to fans who love the time-traveling Time Lord is "Yesteryear," an emotional, time travel installment that shows off Spock's formative years.

While D.C. Fontana intended for "Yesteryear" to serve somewhat as a sequel to the classic Original Series' " The City on the Edge of Forever ," a lot of what we learn about Spock and his early years on Vulcan in this episode informs what many have come to know about elements of Spock and Vulcan years and decades later.

" Blink of an Eye ," Star Trek: Voyager

"Blink of an Eye"

In this standalone story, the U.S.S. Voyager becomes the unwitting focus of a planet's entire civilization when the starship finds itself trapped above a pre-warp planet.

Beholden by the Prime Directive to not interfere, they must wait until the planet's technology advances to the point that they can help free the ship, as a second on Voyager is a day on the planet. Believing Voyager above, as a new deity sky ship, the inhabitants of the planet progress in all manner of religion, art, and sciences for generations.

Bonus, it features Daniel Dae Kim as the memorable Gotana-Raetz.

" All Those Who Wander ," Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

In "All Those Who Wander," the U.S.S. Enterprise crew comes face-to-face with their demons – and scary monsters too – when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy.

This episode delivers on the strange new worlds, terrifying creatures, and frights.

" The Measure of a Man ," Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek History: The Measure of a Man

When it comes to courtroom dramas, "The Measure of a Man" is one of Star Trek 's classic morality plays displaying the franchise's value of all life.

When science officer and android Data refuses to be disassembled for research purposes, Jean-Luc Picard and Will Riker are enlisted, in court, to determine if Data is the property of Starfleet or a sentient being entitled to all the rights and protections of any other citizen of the Federation would receive.

" Darmok ," Star Trek: The Next Generation

"Darmok"

This is slightly cheating with a second The Next Generation select, but only because Star Trek: Picard is perhaps too serialized a series and requires some knowledge from TNG to understand what's happening there. Another honorable mention that leads into Picard that would be a great standalone is Star Trek: Short Treks ' "Children of Mars."

But back to "Darmok," this hour of television finds Captain Picard captured, trapped on a planet, and forced to battle with a Tamarian captain who only speaks in in metaphor. The two captains are determined to understand one another. By episode's end, Picard states that "communication is a matter of patience, imagination." This episode, decades later, still represents the best of Star Trek .

Doctor Who 's Russell T Davies even stated back in 2010 that the premise of "Darmok" resonated with him and lingered in his mind for 20 years, inspiring him to script the episode "Midnight."

" Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ," Star Trek: Discovery

"Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad"

Like Doctor Who and other sci-fi series, there's no shortage of time loop stories in Star Trek .

In "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad," a bottle episode, as the U.S.S. Discovery crew attempts to let loose at a party, an unwelcome visitor comes aboard bringing about a problematic and twisted sequence of events.

In a fun and simple episode, we watch a wary team come together as they deal with a troublemaker up to no good with a time crystal and pull themselves out of their very own explosive Groundhogs Day.

" Duet ," Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

"Duet"

This first season's powerful two-hander sets the tone for what fans can expect in later seasons of Deep Space Nine .

A lot of the episode involves the Bajoran Kira Nerys and Cardassian Marritza, a patient arriving at the space station seeking medical attention, in a room together as she interrogates him believing him to be a war criminal known as the Butcher of Gallitep. A powerhouse of an episode, "Duet" tackles nationalism, trauma, personal prejudices, and true justice as Kira unravels the real identity of the man before her.

" Far Beyond the Stars ," Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek History: Far Beyond the Stars

In this thought-provoking episode, "Far Beyond the Stars," directed by the series' lead Avery Brooks, combines science fiction with social commentary. Ben Sisko experiences a vision where he's a struggling sci-fi writer in 1950s New York, experiencing all the difficulties and racism that time entails.

Despite airing over two decades ago, the message resonates just as deeply in the 50s, the 90s, and especially today in 2024, and it contrasts deeply to the largely color blind and idealistic world of Starfleet.

" Carbon Creek ," Star Trek: Enterprise

"Carbon Creek"

In this fish-out-of-water period piece, T'Pol tells Archer and Trip about a tale of a Vulcan ship that crash-landed in a Pennsylvanian mining town called Carbon Creek in 1957.

T'Pol depicts the "true" first contact between Vulcans and Humans, which occurred a full century before what history believes to be the first. As the stranded Vulcans await their rescue, they get a glimpse of what humanity has to offer.

" Time Amok ," Star Trek: Prodigy

"Time Amok"

Lastly, all of Star Trek: Prodigy would make a good entry point as the all-ages series was specifically created with targeting new viewers with a ragtag bunch of misfits learning about Starfleet after coming discovering a hidden Federation starship.

In "Time Amok," the young crew must work together, but individually, as they're caught in an anomaly field that forces each member to experience the flow of time differently. Heartbreakingly, the youngest member, Rok-Tahk is stuck in the slowest time; in addition to helping the team save themselves, she has to overcome her self-limiting beliefs, which in turn, helps the crew to see past her large, brawny exterior.

What are the must-see concerts of 2024?

With every new year comes artists that release new music. To help support the music, they typically announce tours that coincide with it, allowing fans to catch their favorite artists in different cities to perform the new tunes and the classics. 

While some artists are using the stage as a farewell, others are bringing fans into a new era. Here is a list of tours that are sure to be the hottest tickets in town.

Justin Timberlake

After a six-year hiatus since his previous album Man of the Woods, Justin Timberlake is back with his sixth studio album Everything I Thought I Was.  In support of his new album, Timberlake is hitting the road across North America with his "The Forget Tomorrow World Tour." The singer will start his trek on April 29th in Vancouver and end on July 9th in Kentucky.

Megan Thee Stallion

Just two years since her previous album Traumazine , the world's resident hottie Megan Thee Stallion is heating up the charts with her latest single "Hiss." Upon the heels of her latest release, Megan interviewed with Good Morning America and revealed that her new album is on the way and she'll be embarking on the "Hot Girl Summer Tour."

2024 might be the year of Usher. After being crowned the king of Las Vegas due to his three-year sold-out residency at Caesar’s Palace and MGM Dolby Live, in late 2023 the NFL announced Usher as the halftime show performer for Super Bowl LVIII. Shortly after the halftime news, Usher announced he would be releasing his ninth album Coming Home, and embarking on a worldwide tour. By the way, Usher's halftime performance at SB LVIII was a rousing success .

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are keeping their fans fed with live shows. "The Unlimited Love Tour" started back in 2022 and continued through 2023, and the band has continued to extend it this year with an additional 16 shows. This time around, they're bringing a few special guests along, including Kid Cudi, Ice Cube, Ken Carson, and more. The Red Hot Chili Peppers will wrap the tour up on July 30th in St. Louis.

In October 2023, reggaeton star Bad Bunny announced his upcoming "Most Wanted Tour" to help promote his latest album  Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana. Bad Bunny started his North America trek on February 21st, which will run through May 26th. When he made an Instagram post promoting the tour, he made it clear saying, “If you’re not a real fan, don’t come.”

Janet Jackson

In 2023, Janet Jackson embarked on her sold-out "Together Again" tour with special guest Ludacris. Well, she’s bringing the tour back again, and this time she’s bringing Nelly along for the ride. Jackson and Nelly will trek across 35 cities including Chicago, New Orleans, Toronto, and Los Angeles. 

Adele’s Las Vegas residency began back in late 2022, and her final shows in Sin City will end this year. Although tickets on Ticketmaster for her shows are currently sold out, fans can still snag tickets on secondary platforms like Vivid Seats and StubHub. The "Weekends with Adele" residency will have its final show on June 15th.

After reuniting at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, rock band Blink-182 embarked on a tour and plan to make it a second time around. With the release of their latest album  One More Time, it’s the perfect time to give their fans another chance to see them across stadiums and arenas worldwide. The tour is set to begin on June 20th in Orlando, Fla., and will end on August 30th in Glasgow, U.K. 

Drake and J. Cole

Thanks to the success of their 2023 collaboration “First Person Shooter,” Drake and J. Cole are hitting the road for their "It's All A Blur Tour—Big as the What?" tour. While Drake recently wrapped up his joint tour with 21 Savage, this time around, he and Cole are touring cities in smaller markets. The tour will begin on February 2nd in Tampa, Fla., and end on April 16th in Denver, Co.

Foo Fighters

Summertime is always a great time to see your favorite bands. Rock band Foo Fighters are taking over stadiums across 10 cities, with opening act appearances from The Pretenders and The Hives. "The Everything or Nothing at All Tour" will kick off on July 17th in New York City and close out on August 18th in Seattle. 

While 2024 marks the end of Billy Joel’s long-running Madison Square Garden residency, he’s still taking his show on the road across several stadiums. For a few of the select shows, Joel will be joined by legendary acts Sting and Stevie Nicks.

Nicki Minaj

After a five-year hiatus since her previous album Queen, Nicki Minaj returned in 2023 with her long-awaited album  Pink Friday 2. To help celebrate the new album, Minaj’s fan base (the Barbz) is in for a treat as she embarks on "The Pink Friday 2 World Tour" starting in March. Minaj is also slated to make appearances at festivals like Rolling Loud California and Dreamville. 

The Rolling Stones

Even after six decades since their first U.S. tour, The Rolling Stones are still in high demand for live shows. The rock band is set to hit the road on a 16-city tour to support their latest album Hackney Diamonds. The tour will run from April 28th through July 17th.

The time has come to say farewell to Sum 41. Back in May 2023, the band announced they would be calling it quits as a group. After the release of their album Heaven :x: Hell, they announced their final shows as "Tour of the Setting Sun." Joined by special guest The Interrupters, the tour is set to take place across Asia, Europe, and North America. 

In December 2023, Dreamville artist Bas released his long-awaited fourth album We Only Talk About Real S—t  When We’re F—d  Up which featured several collaborations alongside J. Cole, Amaarae, Adekunle Gold, and more. To help support the album, Bas is taking his music on the road with a 23-city North America tour. Bas will begin the tour on March 3rd in Dallas and wrap up on April 9th in New York.

Olivia Rodrigo

Just two years after her first headlining tour, rising star Olivia Rodrigo is embarking on her "GUTS World Tour." In celebration of her sophomore album Guts, she will take on 77 shows, joined by openers The Breeders, Chappell Roan, PinkPantheress, and Remi Wolf. Rodrigo began the tour on February 23rd in Thousand Palms and will wrap it up on August 17th in Inglewood. 

In support of his latest album Standing Room Only, country legend Tim McGraw is bringing his talent to the stage. The three-time Grammy winner’s tour will begin on March 14th in Jacksonville and end on June 27th in Phoenix.

Tamia and Joe

For the R&B lovers, get ready to hear love ballads and smooth jams from two of the genre’s finest, Tamia and Joe. The tour kicked off on February 9th in Washington D.C. and will end on May 4th in St. Louis. 

Pop singer Tate McRae has been on a hot streak in 2023. From her hit song “Greedy,” to releasing her sophomore album Think Later, to an epic  Saturday Night Live performance, it seems like McRae is ready to take her career to another level. This year, she's set to embark on the "Think Later" 2024 tour, which kicks off April 17th in Dublin, Ireland. Joining McRae as her opening acts will be charlieonnafriday and Presley Regier.

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band postponed their 2023 tour after the singer had to treat a health matter, but the band is ready to take their show on the road this year. The tour is set to kick off on March 19th in Phoenix, Arizona, and other cities on the trek will include San Diego, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and more. 

Green Day is headed out for a stadium tour and they’re bringing a few friends with them. The pop-punk trio will embark on the "Saviors Tour" that will include acts Rancid and The Linda Lindas, as well as The Smashing Pumpkins. In support of the band’s newest album Saviors, the North American leg of the tour will kick off on July 29th in Washington, D.C.

Jewel and Melissa Etheridge

Country music fans, get ready to unite as Jewel and Melissa Etheridge co-headline a tour for the summer. The North America tour is set to kick off on July 11th in Montana and will end on October 5th in Arkansas.
