Ford 6.8L V-10 Engine

The 6.8 L (413 CID) SOHC V10 is a variation of the Modular family created for use in large trucks.

Bore size is 90.2 mm (3.552 in) and stroke is 105.8 mm (4.165 in), identical to the 5.4 L V8. Both 2-valve and 3-valve versions have been produced. The 6.8 L uses a split-pin crank with 72° firing intervals and a balance shaft to quell vibrations inherent to a 90° bank angle V10 engine. The engine’s firing order is 1-6-5-10-2-7-3-8-4-9. The 2-valve version was first introduced in 1997, with a 3-valve non-VCT version to follow in 2005. The 3-valve engines were built alongside the 2-valve engines at Ford’s Windsor, Ontario LVL engine line, but moved production to the larger Windsor Engine Plant in 2009.

2-Valve: Vehicles equipped with the 2-valve 6.8 L V10 Modular engine include the following:

3-Valve: Vehicles equipped with the 3-valve 6.8 L V10 Modular engine include the following:

Key features and benefits:

One camshaft in each cylinder head (at the top of each cylinder bank) operating 3 valves, 2 intake and 1 exhaust

SOHC design provides an advanced level of valve control

Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components mean greater reliability and fuel economy

Electronic throttle control uses electronic sensors instead of mechanical linkage to deliver seamless and consistent engine response

Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability and helps reduce NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) characteristics

Coil-on-plug ignition system design for high-mileage durability

90,000-mile spark plug maintenance interval with regular fluid and filter changes – under normal driving conditions

Fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect the engine from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from 10-cylinder operation to alternating 5-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with limited engine power. This system allows the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or reach a service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and road conditions

Ford V10 Firing Order

Known Problems:

The Ford V10 is a very reliable motor, and has been known to exceed 300,000 miles. It does have a few known problems:

Spark Plugs Shooting Out The The Heads:

Spark plugs on the V10 need to be checked and torqued if needed. They are known to come loose and shoot out of the cylinder head and strip out the threads. The repair involved reaming the spark plug hole, tapping it and inserting a helicoil to hold a factory spark plug.

You can find these repair kits at the bottom of this page.

Engine Running Rough / Misfiring:

If you’re having a problem with your V10 running rough / missing, it may be your Coil On Plugs (COP). The V10 has an ignition coil mounted on top of each spark plug. These can fail over time if they’re exposed to moisture. The ones closest to the firewall are the ones that most commonly fail (#5 & #10). The engine may not display a check engine light if it has a misfire. If you can get access to a diagnostic tool that can read the codes on the V10, you should be able to get codes from the bad COP. The code will directly correspond to the bad coil. The codes are:

You can find good deals on replacement coils at the bottom of this page.

Exhaust Manifold Studs Rust And Break:

The factory studs rust and break off causing an exhaust leak. The repair involves removing the remaining nuts to remove the exhaust manifold. Then a nut is welded on to the remaining stud. The heat of the welder usually causes it to come loose, and can be removed by using a socket on the welded nut.

Oil Consumption:

The V10 is known for using oil. It’s not uncommon for them to use up a quart of oil between oil changes.

If you have an oil leak from the drivers side of the engine block, it may be coming from the seal between the engine block, and oil cooler adapter.

12 Biggest-Displacement Four-Cylinder Engines Ever Produced

This is the cheapest way to buy 500 horsepower in 2024, here’s what the shelby series 1 is worth today.

Ford pickup trucks have been around for 75 years across 14 generations, and they continue to be one of the most successful vehicles sold in North America. The Super Duty line of heavy-duty trucks, which Ford recently redesigned, came along in 1999, and their primary purpose was to accomplish feats that the regular F-150 simply couldn't. The Super Duty family made its debut in 1999, and it's been going strong ever since.

With the introduction of the Super Duty line, Ford decided to experiment. They gave a Super Duty some extra seats and put a hardtop on the bed, to create one of the most capable full-size SUVs in all of history: the Excursion.

2000-2005 Excursion Overview

The Ford Excursion came along in 1999 as a 2000 model year vehicle, and it coincided with the launch of the Super Duty line of pickup trucks from the Blue Oval. As you might expect, the Excursion used the same platform as the Super Duty trucks, but it featured a cover over the truck bed, which in itself was a cargo area and a space where Ford mounted an additional row of seats. The thing that set apart the Excursion from other family SUVs with three-row seating was its enormity. There hasn't been an SUV since the Excursion that offers this much excess in terms of sizing and capability.

RELATED: We Would Love Ford To Produce This Awesome Excursion Raptor

The Excursion looked fairly similar to the Super Duty pickup trucks of the time. Obviously, you couldn't get it with dually rear wheels, but the family resemblance was definitely there. The front end was pretty much the same, and so was the hood line. The side profile featured a set of running boards as standard, and the Excursion's length allowed Ford to install full-size rear doors. The rear, meanwhile, featured Dutch doors instead of a tailgate, as well as an opening rear window.

Ford offered a few different trim levels on the Excursion, including the requisite XLT, Limited, and the high-end Eddie Bauer. The Excursion's closest competitor was the Cadillac Escalade ESV, which is still around today, which came along in 2002, but the Excursion really was in a category of its own. Even if you compare it to other similar SUVs, like the Lincoln Navigator and Mercury Mountaineer, or the badass Hummer H1, the Excursion was bigger and more capable than just about all of them.

2000-2005 Excursion Powertrains

Throughout its life, Ford offered the Excursion with four different powertrains. The range kicked off with the 5.4-liter Triton gasoline V8, developing 255 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Then, there was the rather absurd 6.8-liter Triton gasoline V10, developing 310 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. The gasoline engines remained the same through the whole production run, and there were also two different diesels.

RELATED: 10 Most Reliable Diesel Pickup Trucks You Can Buy Used

From 2000 to 2003 or thereabout, Ford offered the tried and true 7.3-liter Powerstroke turbo diesel V8, which had 250 hp and a substantial 525 lb-ft of torque. From 2003 to 2005, Ford switched over to the less loved 6.0-liter Powerstroke turbo diesel V8, which sat at the top of the lineup as the most powerful and capable powertrain, with 325 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque.

The latter engine had an immense towing capacity of 11,000 lbs, but even the gasoline versions of the Excursion could tow 7,000 lbs or more. Power went to either the rear wheels, or all four wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission, with the only exception being the 6.0-liter Powerstroke, which switched over to a five-speed automatic.

2000-2005 Excursion Interior, Features, And Reliability

On the inside, the Super Duty family resemblance continued. Even though a sizable amount of interior components were the same as you'd find on an F-450 of the same vintage, Ford did their best to elevate the surroundings with nicer trimmings and better seat upholstery, and a fair amount of wood trim. Then again, the front of the Excursion's interior isn't especially important, as it's all about what happens in the rear.

The front did have climate control and an audio system, but so did the other two rows of seats. You could even spec a rear seat entertainment system for the second row, and each row also had its own climate controls. The most impressive thing about the Excursion, owing to its dimensions, is the capacity of everything. This may be an SUV, but it can seat nine passengers, and still offer 48 cubic feet of cargo space. If you fold down all the seats, you get a truly commodious 146 cubic feet of cargo space.

RELATED: How The 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty Flexes Hard With 1,200 LB-FT

In terms of reliability, the Excursion is pretty bulletproof. That's not entirely surprising, as its powertrain lineup pretty much mirrors that of the Super Duty trucks, and as long as the previous owner has done the scheduled maintenance, and you continue to do it, you should be fine. However, it's best to avoid the 6.0-liter Powerstroke, as that's the powertrain with the most issues. Go for the 7.3 Powerstroke or the V10, especially if you plan to tow, as the 5.4-liter V8 isn't quite as capable.

2000-2005 Excursion Prices

The Ford Excursion is starting to gain a lot of traction in the world of used SUVs, simply because of its capability and its ability to do just about everything you could possibly want. Because nobody thought of preserving Excursions, pristine examples are worth a ton of money nowadays. Classic.com estimates the average value for the Excursion to be around $30,000. Some examples have sold for $100,000.

If you can find a solid example, which should set you back around $35,000, you can be rest assured that no other SUV in history is quite on the same level of capability. The Excursion's legacy lives on today, and so does the hope, as Ford revived the trademark not too long ago. Meanwhile, digital artists have put together their interpretations of a modern Excursion.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Epic interior space, powerful engine line-up and a long list of standard equipment.
  • Its HUGE, which means poor gas mileage and difficult to maneuver within city limits.

The Excursion is an entirely new SUV based on Ford's F-250 Super Duty truck platform. It is the largest vehicle of its type, outgunning even the Chevy Suburban in terms of overall size and interior space.

Edmunds says

Too much truck for too many people. Buy a Suburban if you need a nine-passenger SUV that can tow heavy stuff.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2000 Ford Excursion Limited 4dr SUV 4WD and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

In a classic "bigger is better" move, Ford has decided to up the SUV ante by producing the largest soccer-mom mobile yet. The Excursion offers more interior room and cargo capacity than the previous heavy-weight title holder, the Chevrolet Suburban. At the same time, Ford is touting the Excursion's "earth-friendly" aspects like an engine line-up that meets LEV standards and the fact that 85 percent of the Excursion, by weight, is recyclable (never mind that the remaining 15 percent of an Excursion still equals about 2.5 Honda Civics). The Excursion's base engine is a 5.4-liter V8 on two-wheel-drive models or a 6.8-liter V10 on models equipped with four-wheel drive. Optional with either drivetrain is a 7.3-liter V8 diesel that makes 235 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of earth-shaking torque. All engines come with a four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment; no manual transmission is offered in the Excursion. Two trim levels are available. The base XLT model includes a three-piece rear door, running boards, remote keyless entry, driver and front-passenger airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo, six cupholders, power door locks, power windows, an overhead console, cloth seats, a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a third-row removable bench seat. Angle up to the Limited trim level and you get leather seating surfaces, front captain's chairs, woodgrain trim, rear-seat audio controls, a trip computer, power rear-quarter windows, 10 cupholders, aluminum wheels and illuminated running boards. Additional options like heated seats, heated exterior mirrors, a six-disc CD changer and a limited-slip axle can be ordered as well. Since it's based off the F-250 Super Duty (the front doors, fenders, and hood will swap between them), Ford was able to develop the Excursion with a bare-minimum investment of company funds. This means a large profit margin for each Excursion sold, even by SUV standards. These same market forces were behind the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Lexus LX470. We've begun to wonder how far this SUV thing can go, but if people keep buying them, automakers will keep building them.

Ford Excursion V10 4X4 Limited (2000)

SEE ALSO: Ford Buyer's Guide

By Tom Hagin

The Ford Excursion is a true utility vehicle and it excels at hauling passengers and cargo for jobs or vacations. It comes in XLT and like our tester for the week, the top-line Limited.

OUTSIDE - The Excursion is 19-feet long, 6.5-feet wide and "...just under seven feet tall..," according to Ford. Despite this claim, it rarely fits into multi-level parking lots or a home garage. Finding an accommodating mall parking spot is also a chore, and maneuvering through traffic can be nerve-wracking. Special steel extensions protrude down under the front bumper to reduce the risk of overriding a smaller vehicle while a giant frame-mounted trailer hitch similarly protects other vehicles in a rear-end crash. A massive chrome grille is set between flush, sealed-beam halogen headlamps, while a unique rear hatch incorporates a set of lightweight Dutch-style doors and a flip-up glass hatch which makes access to the cargo area easy. Its huge side mirrors are a necessity, while optional trailer-tow mirrors offer three times the viewing area. Running boards are standard equipment and feature standard illumination on Limited models but an option on the XLT.

INSIDE - There is quite a step up to climb into the 4X4 Excursion, but the running boards and large doors help. Grab handles are located throughout the cabin to assist as well. Excursions can hold up to nine people depending on the model, but the best arrangement came with in a seven seater configuration. Two up front, three in the middle and two in the third bench seatworks out just fine. The middle-row seats fold and stow flat for extra cargo space, and the third-row seat is simple to remove. The rear seats release and slide forward for rear access using a series of levers. The interior is loaded with amenities such as five separate power sockets and roof ventilation ports, a rear audio system, 10 cupholders and lots lots of storage. Our tester's front bucket seats were well bolstered and supportive. Excursion shined when we nearly maxed out its cargo bay with weight, easily swallowing 40 cases of lemon juice with room to spare. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, a powerful stereo, cruise control and variable speed intermittent wipers.

ON THE ROAD - The entry-level Excursion engine is a 5.4-liter V8. Called Triton by Ford, it produces 255 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. A Power Stroke diesel V8 is also available, making only 235 horses but a massive 500 lb-ft of torque. Ford expects 15-percent of Excursions buyers to opt for this engine but most will buy theirs with a 310-horse, 6.8-liter V10. With 425 lb-ft of torque, much of it available at low rpm, towing jobs of up to 10,000 pounds are possible. Fuel mileage is dismal, however, and that is expected from such a large vehicle. We averaged about 11 mpg with a full load of passengers and cargo. A 44-gallon gas tank helps mask its woeful mpg figures, so fill- ups are far between. The only transmission choice is an electronic four-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive models use a part-time, shift-on-the-fly 4X4 system. Engagement to the front wheels is done by twisting a dashboard-mounted switch, which activates a set of pneumatically-locking front hubs.

BEHIND THE WHEEL - Under Excursion's exterior is Ford's massive, body-on-frame Super Duty F-Series truck platform. Four-wheelers use solid front and rear axles with leaf springs while 4X2 models have twin I-beams in front with coil springs. Spring rates were reduced by 20 percent compared to the pickup, but the shock absorbers and sway bars were tuned for roll stiffness. Sporty handling is not its forte, and it's expected that caution must be exorcised when driving one. It's tall truck tires flex at the sidewalls when the steering wheel is flicked back and forth, and emergency lane-changes need to be performed gently. A reduced-effort steering gear helps in this area, as does the standard four-wheel disc/four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS).

SAFETY - Dual dashboard airbags, side-impact door beams and ABS are standard.

OPTIONS - Transfer case skid plate, $75; heated front seats, $290.

History of Zabaykalsky Krai

The first people inhabiting Transbaikalia, known both from archaeological finds and written sources (mainly Chinese), were the nomadic people of the Hunnu (209 BC - 93 AD), who created a large state in the Central Asian steppes. In the 6th-9th centuries, Turkic Uighurs lived in this region.

In 1206, Temujin was proclaimed the great khan of the Mongolian state and adopted a new name - Genghis Khan. The territory of the region became an integral part of the Mongol Empire. In the 14th century, the Mongolian Empire collapsed into separate states. Until the 17th century, the territory of the present Zabaykalsky krai was part of the Mongolian state of Northern Yuan.

From the middle of the 17th century, Transbaikalia became part of the Russian state. The first explorers crossed Dauria (the lands beyond Lake Baikal) along the rivers. The Buryats and Tungus, after a long resistance, recognized the new power and paid tribute to Russia. Several fortified towns were founded. Among the first colonists there were a lot of exiled old believers.

Since 1704, Nerchinsky, Shilkinsky, Gazimursky, and other silver smelters appeared. In the 18th century, the population of the region grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers and criminals, who worked in mines. Great role in the development of the region was played by the exiled members of the Decembrist uprising (brothers Bestuzhev, M.S.Lunin, N.M.Muravyov, C.G.Volkonsky, A.I.Yakubovich and others). From 1782, the region was a part of Nerchinskaya (Zabaykalskaya) Oblast of Irkutsk Governorate.

More Historical Facts…

Since the 19th century, mining was the main industry of the region. In 1851, Zabaykalskaya Oblast was formed with the capital in Chita as part of Irkutsk Governorate. In the same year, with the goal of strengthening the border, the Trans-Baikal Cossack Army was created, numbering more than 3,500 people. At the end of the 19th century, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway forced the economic development of the region.

At the end of the 1920s - in the early 1930s, during collectivization, Cossack settlements were destroyed, the Buryat cattle-breeders were forced to have a settled way of life. In March 1934, Chita Oblast was formed, it became a part of Vostochno-Sibirsky Krai. On September 26, 1937, Vostochno-Sibirsky Krai was divided into Irkutsk and Chita oblasts. Within Chita Oblast there was Aginsky Buryat-Mongol national district formed.

During the Second World War, tens of thousands of local residents were drafted into the Soviet army. In connection with the threat of an attack by the Kwantung Army of Japan, the Transbaikal front was established here. In 1945, after the defeat of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union began military operations against Japan.

Until 1949, about 77 thousand Japanese prisoners of war were engaged in work to restore the region. The local economy was completely restored by the 1950s. In 1969, there was an armed conflict on the Soviet-China border close to the frontier point of Nizhne-Mikhailovka on the Damansky Island.

In the 1990s, there was a sharp decline in industrial and agricultural production. On March 1, 2008, in the territory of Chita Oblast and the Aginsky Buryat Autonomous Okrug, a new federal subject of Russia was created - Zabaykalsky Krai.
