I’m doing an 8am Keys to the Kingdom tour in about a week when Magic Kingdom normal opening time is 9a. Do you think the Monorail is normally operating early enough to get to the park in time?

That sounds like so much fun, Caitlin! According to Disney’s website, the Monorail does not start running until 30 minutes before Magic Kingdom opens so that would be 8:30.

The Backstage Magic Tour: What You Need to Know

behind the scenes tour of disney world

Have you ever wondered how certain attractions work? Or wanted to get a peek at how Disney creates the magic behind the scenes? Whether you are a newbie or Walt Disney World expert, there is something for everyone on the very special Backstage Magic Tour. This seven-hour long tour is perfect for those who want to receive an up-close look at the artistry, technology, engineering, and backstage secrets that are behind the magic of Walt Disney World. We recently enjoyed this tour. Catch all the details below.

1 – The Basics

The Backstage Magic Tour, operated by Adventures by Disney, is a one of a kind experience where guests go “backstage” and get a glimpse at what goes into creating the magic. The cost is $275 per person, though a table service lunch is included in the price. Bottled water is also included on the tour. There is no price discount for children since guests need to be twelve and over to experience the tour. The tour is seven hours and guests should expect to stand during most of the tour. The tour can accommodate ECVs and wheelchairs; however, be sure to mention you have a mobility device when you make your reservation. There is a strict no photos policy when you are backstage. You will check in at Epcot and be returned there when the tour concludes. Since you will not be riding any attractions, park admission to Epcot and Magic Kingdom is not required. Per the Disney website, note that the tour is provided in English only. Simultaneous translation is not provided, nor is it allowed.

2 – The American Adventure

After checking in at Epcot, you will board a motor coach and drive to The American Adventure. World Showcase is closed to guests at this time, so you will see lots of Cast Members working to ensure the area is all set for guests when it does open at 11:00 am. We learned about the history of Walt Disney World—from Walt’s vision for Disney World to Roy Disney overseeing construction and making sure his brother’s vision became a reality. We also learned about how Epcot became the theme park it is today, instead of the living community that Walt envisioned.

Standing outside of The American Adventure, we learned about the tricks of forced perspective used by Imagineers to make a five-story building appear to be a three-story building. Inside, we learned secrets about the rotunda (it is not as round as you think), and how Imagineers hide functional aspects of a space behind certain decorations. We were told over and over, how every detail has a purpose. Pieter, one of our guides, said it best when he said, “Magic happens in the details.”

Finally, we were brought behind the curtain and learned how the show operated. When created, the show system was very technologically advanced for the late 1970s. We were surprised to learn that the system used to operate the show components is still run with the large computers for the era (like you see in Spaceship Earth). When asked about it, they said, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it!” The Audio-Animatronics were the most complex at the time, and it was great to see Ben Franklin up close! If you’re a fan of Epcot and The American Adventure, you’ll really enjoy this portion of the tour.

behind the scenes tour of disney world

3 – Creative Costuming

Our next stop was Creative Costuming. When traveling from Epcot to this building, we were treated to more history and facts about the Walt Disney World Resort. You will learn a lot about the resort during this tour! The costuming department was very cool to visit. We were taken through the process of how costumes come to be. We learned about the differences between front line costumes, costumes for entertainment performers, and finally, costumes for audio-animatronics. It’s a fascinating process, and the database that is used for tracking costumes is impressive. We were also able to see Cast Members in the process of sewing costumes and had a photo opportunity for a keepsake.

4 – Textiles

After that, we headed to the Textile Services, which is a huge 200,000 square feet building. While visiting a laundry facility sounds like it wouldn’t be interesting, this laundry facility is like none you’ve ever seen. The system used to launder items used at the Walt Disney World Resort is amazing. The washers wash 150 pounds of laundry at a time, and the dryers dry 300 pounds at a time. We also saw the folding process. This facility alone cleans 2.5 million pounds of laundry every week, which is about 30,000 resort rooms! There are four plants on the property. The facility we visited was for the Deluxe resorts, the water parks, and all of the pool towels. We ended our visit with a unique photo opportunity! It was a fascinating part of our tour.

5 – Lunch at Whispering Canyon Café

Next, we traveled to Wilderness Lodge for lunch at Whispering Canyon Café. We had a little over an hour to enjoy the family-style barbeque lunch. Lunch here is always great. At this point in the tour, we had been standing all morning, so it was nice to sit down and relax. I sat at the table with Amber, one of the tour guides, so I was also treated to more fascinating facts and secrets!

6 – Central Shops

After lunch, we traveled to the Central Shops building where Imagineering builds and maintains props, ride vehicles, etc. On our way, we passed the building that houses the locomotive trains on the bottom, and the monorails on the top. Our guide said it perfectly when he shared, “We build our future on top of our past, but both remain important to us.”

The Central Shops building was the highlight for many on the tour. It was a very cool place to visit. We learned that the shop can build items from scratch but spend most of their time on maintenance. They usually have up to 3,000 orders a day to complete. We learned about preventative, corrective, and cyclical maintenance performed on ride vehicles and auto-animatronics. We saw carousel horses, a Big Thunder Mountain train, Expedition Everest wheels and lap bars, a giraffe from the Jungle Cruise, and more. We learned about the molding process used for skins for auto-animatronics and got a chance to touch the material!

Finally, we had a chance to see in action the first auto-animatronic—a bird from The Enchanted Tiki Room from Disneyland. We learned about the history of the auto-animatronics and how complex they are today.  We ended with a photo opportunity-standing in front of the large polar bear that was once in The Maelstrom attraction at the Norway Pavilion.

7 – The Utilidors of Magic Kingdom Park

Our last stop of the tour was at Magic Kingdom where we had a chance to walk the famous “utilidors” under Magic Kingdom. This part of the tour was my favorite because it was my first chance to walk these halls and it was so cool. We learned about how Magic Kingdom was built and why the utilidors were necessary. There are 1.5 miles of tunnels, using 9 acres of space underneath the Magic Kingdom Park. There has never been an expansion of the original utilidors. We learned more secrets behind the magic during this time, but we won’t spoil it for you! This part of the tour will be a highlight for many, and perhaps worth the cost of the tour itself!

behind the scenes tour of disney world

8 – Back to Epcot

After exploring the utilidors, we headed back to Epcot. As part of the tour, you’ll receive a card that has a unique code so you can access the photos that were taken on the tour. You’ll also receive a unique Disney trading pin for your tour. These also get changed from time to time, so you’ll have a special one of a kind souvenir for your time on the tour.

9 – Future Changes in the Works

While the Backstage Magic Tour has been offered for years, the tour itself changes about every one to one and a half years. The next change will occur in June. In place of the Textiles plant, guests will have a chance to visit the backstage area of The Rivers of Light Show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The lunch venue is also changing to be served at Tiffins, which as a signature dining location, is very exciting. Beyond those changes, you’ll likely learn something new during every tour. The tour guides, who are absolutely amazing, are always learning new tidbits and are happy to share them with their groups. So, if you have been on the tour before, you may want to consider signing up again!

10 – Will it Ruin the Magic?

One question that guests ask when considering taking the tour is whether or not it will ruin the magic. It’s a question worth pondering. The tour guides asked us this question at the end of the tour, and not one person raised their hand saying the magic was ruined. I felt that by learning how much time and effort goes into the smallest detail, I came away from the tour with a greater appreciation for the parks and Disney Cast Members. I don’t’ feel magic was lost; in fact, I would say the magic is more special to me because I know how much care went into creating it for guests. We do encourage everyone to try to do this tour at least once. We think you’ll walk away with more love for this amazing company and place. For reservations call (407) WDW-TOUR/(407) 939-8687.

Editor’s Note: The Disney Company provided us with a complimentary pass to the Backstage Magic Tour. However, as always, the thoughts and opinions contained in this article are entirely our own.

Top behind the scenes looks at walt disney world.

behind the scenes tour of disney world

There are two types of Walt Disney World fans: those who don’t want to know anything about how it works because it might spoil the magic, and those who try every chance they get to peek behind the scenes to figure out how Disney creates the magic. I happen to fall in the second camp—I love to see how everything works at Walt Disney World from the special effects on the attractions to the daily costuming of thousands of employees. Here are 9 picks to draw back the curtain and see behind the scenes at Walt Disney World.

9. Exit at a crowded time

Chances are if you are trying to exit Main Street in Magic Kingdom on a crowded evening just after the fireworks end you might get a chance to see behind the scenes—for just a brief moment. One of the crowd control methods is to let people take a path that you enter near the Plaza restaurant and exit near the Chapeau to help alleviate the crush of traffic traveling down Main Street. While not terribly impressive you do get to see some of the backstage prep areas for Main Street.

8. Chef’s Table at Victoria & Alberts

Have you ever wondered how the Chefs at Walt Disney World come up with such delectable menus and prepare food for a busy dining room? If so, the Chef’s Table at Victoria and Albert’s can offer a nice behind-the-scenes glance at a working kitchen and some one-on-one time with one of Disney’s premiere Chefs. You will be treated to a multi-course feast for the senses designed just for you. This one doesn’t come cheap, but I’ve never heard anyone disappointed with their experience there.

7. Behind the Seeds Tour

This fun tour offers behind the scenes access to the greenhouses at the Land pavilion. For those who want to know more than what you learn on the boat ride about the agricultural research they conduct there, or the foods they are growing, this low cost tour is a great way to satisfy your green thumb’s curiosity (and it is open to all ages). Plus it’s kind-of cool to wave to the people on the boats from the other side (and you get to feed the fish). There is a fee for this tour, and advance reservations are recommended. If you want to know more check out this review: https://www.disneydining.com/behind-the-seeds-tour-review/

6. The Magic Behind Our Steam Trains Tour

If you are a railroad aficionado, or you just love the train at Walt Disney World this early morning tour is a wonderful way to learn the history and tradition of the railroad that started with Walt Disney himself. On the tour you get to enter an empty Main Street (on our tour we even saw the overnight maintenance work still going on) way before any other guests. Then you take a ride on the railroad where you get to see the roundhouse and maintenance bays for the railroad, along with inspecting the engine first hand. It is a pretty awesome experience that I recommend for train and Disney fans alike. Advance reservations are required for this tour, and an additional fee is charged—call 407-WDW-TOUR.

5. Marceline to Magic Kingdom Tour

I highly recommend this tour to Disney fan . It is open to anyone ages 12 and up, and it gives a fun look at what makes the Magic Kingdom so magical and how it is based on the life and interests of Walt Disney himself. Your guide gives you behind the scenes information throughout your tour (including while you are on attractions), and at one point you get to see something so incredibly cool behind the scenes that I have to leave it a secret for you. Reservations are required for this tour also, along with a fee, call 407-WDW-TOUR. More information can be found in this review: https://www.disneydining.com/walt-disney-marceline-magic-kingdom-tour-review/

4. Dining with an Imagineer

This is one incredible experience. Offered at a couple of different locations and dining times, Dining with an Imagineer gives you face time with one of Disney’s creative team that works in the parks. Each meal is different, so your Imagineer and his or her specialty will vary, but they all have great behind the scenes stories and information about the parks. The meal is only offered on certain days of the week, and the size of the group is limited to keep the experience intimate—so be sure to book as early as possible. More details can be found in this review: https://www.disneydining.com/dining-with-an-imagineer/

3. Wild Africa Trek

This is another amazing experience for animal lovers. Set around the Kilimanjaro Safari attraction and the Harambe Wildlife Preserve, this trek takes you behind the scenes and into the actual animal habitats. A private safari vehicle takes you through the rest of the preserve stopping along the way to allow you to stand and take pictures. Throughout you journey an animal expert shares information about the animals and the measures taken by Animal Kingdom specialists to help preserve the various endangered species. The Trek also includes a delicious African “snack” right out on the savanna (where you can wave to the passing vehicles on the attraction), and a CD of all of the photos taken by your guides. This is another behind the scenes experience that I can highly recommend from experience. It does require reservations and an additional fee. For a more in depth look at the experience check out this article: https://www.disneydining.com/wild-african-trek-in-animal-kingdom/

2. Keys to the Kingdom Tour

Want to spend a morning in the Magic Kingdom with a private tour guide going behind the scenes to see all kinds of cool stuff including the legendary Utilidors? Sign me up! My husband and I did this tour on our anniversary trip a couple of years ago and it was a pretty amazing experience to see how several things work in the Magic Kingdom (and very neat to go into the Utilidors—even briefly). You also go on a couple of attractions where your guide gives you more behind the scenes information, and it includes lunch! Like most of the tours, an additional fee and advance reservations are required. More information can be found here: https://www.disneydining.com/?s=keys+to+the+kingdom

1. Backstage Magic Tour

This is one behind the scenes look that I have not been able to experience yet—but it is top on my list to take my son next year when he turns 16 (the minimum age for this tour). This 7 hour tour visits all four theme parks and lets you take a look behind the scenes at the amazing animatronics at the American Adventure in Epcot, the Utilidors at Magic Kingdom, and see how Tower of Terror creates its thrills at Hollywood Studios, plus a trip to costuming and central shops. Somewhere in there you fit in lunch at Wilderness Lodge. I can’t wait to go on this one! Again, reservations and a fee are required.

There you have it, 10 ways to get a peek behind the scenes at the magic of Walt Disney World. Do you prefer to let the magic happen, or would your rather know how it happens?

She oozed showbiz glamour in a sparkly silver bra paired with a matching skirt and fishnet leggings that showed off her endless legs.

Her signature long brunette locks were let loose and styled in waves as they cascaded over her shoulders.

The Disney Channel alum is preforming her sophomore album, GUTS, for six nights in the City of Angeles on August 13, 14, 16, 17, 20 and 21.

The first four of her shows will be held at the Kia Forum and the last two at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.

The multihyphenate accessorized with a silver chain necklace and a dainty bracelet as she preformed some of her greatest hits like Drivers License and Good 4 U.

She modeled a stunning full face of glam, including shimmering silver eye shadow and bronzer that made her facial structure pop.

Prior to hitting the stage, Olivia took to her Instagram Story to share a sweet message the Kia Forum left for her on one of the walls of the indoor arena.

'Welcome to the Kia Forum, Olivia! Congrats on 4 sold out shows!' it read.

The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star snap of photo of herself showing off the note as she flashed a heart gesture with her hand.

'So excited,' she penned above the snap.

On Wednesday, the Happier hitmaker shared behind the scenes photos of herself as she prepared to belt out her latest hits.

In the snap, she modeled the same sparkling ensemble paired with various silver rings and her on-stage makeup.

'chill it out take it slow then u rock out the show,' she wrote referencing Miley Cyrus' 2006 record, Best of Both Worlds.

Olivia kicked off the GUTS World Tour on February 23, 2024 in Palm Springs, California and will conclude on October 22, 2024, in Sydney, Australia.

Her opening acts rotate between: Good Luck Babe singer Chappell Roan, Boy's a liar songstress PinkPantheress, The Breeders, Remi Wolf and Benee.

Olivia has famously romanced her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar Joshua Bassett, music exec Zack Bia, Adam Faze, Ethan Wacker and most recently, Luis Partridge.

In 2023, the Get Him Back singer admitted to  The Guardian  that some of her hits are about her past relationships. But, she would not publicly match a specific song to an ex.

'I never want to say who my songs are about... I've never done that before in my career and probably won’t,' she said, 'I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.'

Harrison Ford Accepts Disney Legends Award at D23: ‘I Love the Life You’ve Given Me’

Harrison Ford D23 Disney Legend

Oscar nominee Harrison Ford has been officially declared a legend — a Disney Legend that is.

On Sunday at the D23 Expo, Ford was honored with the hall-of-fame-style award from the Walt Disney Company. Because Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, Ford’s most famous roles — like Han Solo from “Star Wars” and the adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones — cement him as one of the studio’s most iconic actors. Next February, Ford continues his legendary run at the studio by starring in Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the U.S. President who memorably transforms into Red Hulk.

After a montage of Harrison’s most iconic work, Ford took the stage to an enthusiastic standing ovation. Referencing one of his most iconic “Star Wars” moments, he told the crowd, “I love you, too” (a more direct version of Han Solo’s famous response, “I know.”)

He continued, “I love the life you’ve given me. I love the people that I’ve had the opportunity to work with. Nobody does anything in this business for long. We work in collaboration, no matter what who we are and what we’re doing.”

Ford called himself an “assistant storyteller,” adding, “The stories are for you, about you, about us ,” Ford said as he choked back tears. “To be able to work in that area is a privilege.”

He went on to thank Iger personally, saying, “I’m acknowledging how important Bob has been in the work that I’ve done and in a creative and business capacity, and he’s also become a dear friend.”

The full class of 2024 honorees include Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood; “Black Panther” star and Oscar nominee Angela Bassett; the first Black Disney tour guide Martha Blanding; TV and film icon and Oscar winner James L. Brooks; “Avatar” mastermind and Oscar winner James Cameron; “Freaky Friday” star and Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis; Grammy winner and “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus; comic book artist Steve Ditko; animator Mark Henn; Emmy-winning TV host Kelly Ripa; and Disney Imagineer executive Joe Rohde. The ceremony will stream on Disney+ in the U.S. and Canada, beginning on Aug. 12.

It’s far from the first time Ford has gotten emotional onstage; in fact, it’s become a bit of a lovely trend. In January, Ford got choked up while accepting the career achievement award from the Critics Choice Association.

“I’m here because of a combination of luck and the work of wonderful directors, writers and filmmakers. I feel enormously lucky,” Ford told the A-list crowd, looking visibly moved by their admiration and applause.

He grew more emotional as he thanked his wife, Calista Flockhart, who “supports me when I need a lot of support — and I need a lot of support.” Then, he saluted his co-stars, many of whom were sitting in the room, like “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” actor Ke Huy Quan. “I’m grateful to all the fine actors … I’ve worked with and I’m deeply happy to have had the opportunities that I’ve had.”
